Introduction

D

uring the week of July 9, 2018 a group of fifteen high school students joined seven members of the faculty in the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology for a week-long workshop learning about the wide world of contemporary photographic theory and practice. The curriculum spanned a variety of topics including fine art, portraiture, documentary, and scientific photography. The week began with a photographic scavenger hunt for images demonstrating various qualities of light and shadow and how light interacts with subjects. Then students learned about historical approaches to portraiture and were challenged to make portraits and self-portraits with deliberate consideration of lighting and composition, as well as mood. Students were then challenged to produce fine art photographs using only campus settings and props selected randomly. From the domain of fine art students then turned their attention to various methods of photographing through the microscope. They learned that tools used primarily for scientific photography can also be used to create beautiful art. On day four the students experimented with light painting and high-speed photography in the studio. Once they had created a body of work, they were taught how to select and sequence their work for publication in this book. During the final afternoon of the week, all the students and faculty came back together to finalize the content of the book. We hope you enjoy looking at this collection of the best images made during the RIT Summer Photography Workshop 2018. Frank Cost James E. y name is Ceanna Anselm and I will be starting my sophomore year at Pittsford Sutherland High School this coming year. From Kindergarten until 6th grade I went to a Charter and Arts School in the City of Rochester which sparked my love for art but it was my grandma whom I got my love for photography from. She is known as the photographer of the family and I have always looked up to her work. So far during high school I have taken a Studio Art class and Photography 1, and I plan on taking many more art classes during my high school career. This upcoming year I will be taking Graphic Design 1 and Contemporary Materials and I can’t wait to take Advanced Photo in my junior year. I love photography and it is something that I want to continue throughout the rest of high school, college, and the rest of my life.

I

have been interested in photography since I was young. I love how photography freezes time and allows you to capture memories and tell a story. I always took pictures at my brother’s sporting events and loved coming home afterwards and being able to relive the game. Those games were what sparked a passionate interest in photography. Some of my work has been displayed throughout my school, and even here at RIT. One of my pictures was selected to be in the Regional High School and Middle School Art Exhibition in the winter of 2018. During my free time I love going on adventures with friends and eating. Wherever I am I always have my camera ready to snap a picture of something that catches my eye. In my future I hope to study advertising photography and be able to travel the world taking pictures of my adventures.

orn in Rochester, New York, I attend Pittsford Mendon High School and I am going into my junior year. In school I have taken, or am about to take, several photography courses such as photo and video editing and standard photography. I play the trombone in Wind Ensemble as well as in Pep Band. Outside of school I enjoy rowing for Pittsford Crew on the historic Erie Canal and traveling to local regattas. My interest in photography happened gradually, originally starting with a picture I took of a cormorant with a stick in its beak. Once I learned I could take decent photos I tried to make better and better pictures. Last year my interest flourished on a vacation to Alaska where I photographed wildlife, vegetation, and other natural wonders. The trip got me interested in birding, scenic, and wildlife photography, which I continue to enjoy by going to Montezuma Sanctuary, and local nature trails. I continue to experiment with types of photography and videography that are new to me.

’m 15 years old and currently attending Eastridge High School entering the 10th grade. I dream of big things for my career in the future. I got into photography about 3 or 4 years ago when my brodie Tyler brought me to a hidden glass house in Fairport NY. I immediately started taking photos with my iPod touch and was amazed. When I showed my parents the photos, they said I had an eye for photography. To this day they say I should be a photographer.

y name is Joyce, but my friends call me Bob for short. Heh. I’m originally from Ivory Coast, which in the western part of Africa. I migrated to the U.S. in 2004 and I’ve been living in Rochester, New York, for 14 years. I wasn’t really into photography until I got to high school. I was more into dancing. I performed for Garth Fagan in the African Ballet. I did a lot of other dancing, but that was the one I enjoyed most. Transitioning from middle school to high school was the best experience because that’s where I started getting more proactive about my education.

am fifteen years old and will be a sophomore at Mendon High School in the fall. I live with my family in Pittsford and have resided in the Rochester area my whole life. My hobbies include drawing, music, and swimming. I am currently learning French, and I achieved gold on the National French Exam this past year, along with achieving the highest score in the Rochester region. I like photography, because I like being able to have a visual record of an experience, and because I like taking pictures of everyday objects and turning them into interesting subjects. In the future I hope to attend RIT.

his class was a wonderful experience working with so many talented photographers. This was my first photography class, which was slightly unnerving. I had taught myself, and was accustomed to being my own judge. When our photos were exposed to the class to critique, I’m not going to lie and say that I didn’t have a small mental breakdown. Yet it was completely worth it. When did photography first capture my interest? I believe I started a year ago, teaching myself by reading library books and making experiments. I was not allowed to take photography until sophomore year, so I joined the newspaper at my school. I found it rather odd that I was the only photographer, and how they promoted a complete newbie to the job. Even so, I enjoyed it profoundly, leading to my decision to take a class at RIT. Other than photography, I love learning Spanish and creative writing.

am 16 years old. As a kid, I always loved taking pictures. During my sophomore year of high school I was scheduled for a study hall on some days. Study halls have got to be the worst thing to ever happen to me. I’m truly not a fan. In the counseling office trying to exchange my study hall with an elective, I had only one choice. Photo class was the only class I could get into that would run for the whole year. I was dreading the class, but as long as it wasn’t a study hall, right? So, I dusted off my old camera, and fell in love with taking photographs. Although I am planning to pursue an education in forensic science, I will always love being able to capture memories through a lens. Although I don’t really have a need, I will continue to buy new cameras and lenses because my future kids will have the best pictures of themselves playing baseball. I am glad to spend my life falling in love with new pictures everyday.

y name is Sydney Majka and I will be entering my junior year at Penfield High School. I began taking pictures on my iPod 4 in fifth grade and realized I had an eye for photography. The following year I begged my family to help me acquire a Canon camera for my birthday and Christmas. After that I started saving my money to buy equipment and built a studio in my basement. I then learned that I loved more than anything taking pictures of people. I like to capture people because I find they are so expressive and have the ability to mold to any environment, but can also stand out. I began taking photo classes in high school starting with digital photography, then advanced digital photography, and I will be doing an independent study with my photography teacher this coming year. A diptych I made of my aunt was featured in a gallery show at RIT my freshman year, and during my sophomore year I received an Arts Recognition Award for photography. When I’m not taking pictures I enjoy reading, adventuring, figure skating and volleyball.

Emonie Mendoza Rochester, New York

I

am a 17-year-old aspiring photographer. I was born in Rochester, New York, and I am the eldest of six siblings. I lived for two years in Florida, where I rescued my dog, Beamer. I was drawn to photography when I realized it was a way for me to express what I was feeling to others visually. From there it just became my niche. In my free time I enjoy sleeping, fishing and taking photos, of course. I hope maybe someday I can attend RIT and study photography.

e m’appelle Jasmine Nichols. Je parle un peu Français. I also speak English as well; but I can also sail, solve a Rubik’s cube, and quote vines. I was born in Rochester, New York, and two years later my parents got me a pet sister (hi Lauren). A couple years later I was enrolled in school. I had lots of friends in kindergarten. After I survived elementary school, I went to middle school at Our Lady of Mercy. I met new friends, had braces and learned French. During the summer I went to a summer camp where I learned how to sail and waterski on Irondequoit Bay. Then after eighth grade I went to high school. It wasn’t as glamorous as the movies, but I did have a lot of fun during lunch with my friends, and I guess I learned stuff in ninth grade. After finals and recovery from the school year, I attended this photography camp. I learned a lot about photography, what makes a good picture, and what food combinations work well together. I hope you learned something about me, but if you didn’t learn anything, try reading it again.

y family is of Hispanic descent and as such I am fluent in both English and Spanish, and visit my family in Spain and Guatemala. I attend Niskayuna High School where I am going into my senior year. Ever since I was young, I have been interested in capturing wildlife in images. In my free time, I’ll grab my camera, get on my bike, and ride for up to ten miles or more from my house to find wildlife to photograph. Whenever I go on trips, I photograph whatever wildlife I see and some of my best works have come from those trips. I also will do still-life photography in the comfort of my own home. I have owned a Sony Alpha 6000 camera since I was thirteen, and it has never failed me. I have learned about the different functions of my camera such as manual focus, white balance, shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

am 17 years old, and I am currently a senior at Northern Highlands Regional Highschool. Some of my hobbies include ballet, volleyball, sleeping, and photography. I first fell in love with film photography and then progressed into digital photography. With film, after every frame you never truly know what you have. The love is so much greater when you can feel the accomplishment of a great photo after development. Also, there is the plus of not having to edit! Digital photography is something I love as well. There is just something about film that is much more personal and intimate. You can feel the true passion though the work and photographs. Even though I live in New Jersey, I find myself here at RIT quite often, and the 5-hour drive is somehow always worth it. Last fall, I came to RIT for the day of photography. While here I received an award for an “Image of distinction. I will also be returning to RIT next week for the photojournalism workshop. I am hoping to study photography at RIT. I fell in love with photography a long time ago, but RIT continually makes me fall back in love every time I pick up my camera.
