1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? The Alessandro de Besi identity brief has helped with my professional practise as I’ve learnt how to make the collateral look more proffesional. When comparing this to my previous identity briefs, I can definitely see improvement in terms of bringing a brief together. As a brief I feel like I brought it together quite well. The space brief has really helped in developing my print skills. Flocking is a process I’ve never tried before & it’s helped with adding to my print knowledge. I’m really happy with the space brief as a collective range of prints as it came together really nicely. Logo development has also improved, with me being more experimental and considering the context in which it will be in. 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? My work has been a lot more conceptual this module in comparison to some past briefs. The Oramics to Electronica brief has been really helpful with developing a concept as an exhibition brief needs to be appropriate yet experimental. The context in which it will be sitting massively effects the design process. I’ve been using the studio facilities much more this year which is something I said I wanted to make sure I did. Using metal works is something I’ve not done before & it was really interesting to go into another work space & learn about what they do.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? I’d say one of my strengths has been type with image this year. Although I’ve always tried to apply type correctly, I’ve really got into it this year and actually enjoyed the layout. It really adds to the professionalism of a design and as a collective brief. I’ll make sure to keep experimenting with this in order to improve my type application. With the Oramics to Electronica brief my poster development showed quite a bit of improvement from start to finish. You can see I got more experimental with image and as a result it really improved the aesthetic of the brief in my opinion. Again, logo development has improvd in comparison to previous years. I feel my logos are appropriate and look quite professional.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? Time management has always been a weak area for me due to the fact that I’m not good with time planning. Although I tried getting advice I still work best under pressure. I think in the future if I set myself deadlines and stick to them, then it will really help. I think because of my bad time management, I never take a brief to its full potential, which as a result means I’m never that satisfied with the work I produce. I’m going to use the time have after the dealine to go into the screen print rooms & create some work that I’d be proud of for the end of year show. Due to organisation I didn’t complete the amount of briefs I would’ve liked to. I spent too long on logo development on the side when I could’ve been working on a bigger brief. I’ll make sure to plan my time better in the future. The fashion show brief fell through which didn’t help. 5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these? Time management – I’ll have more satisfaction with my work and I’ll be able to take my briefs to their full potential. It’ll also allow me to do more work. Print processes – I would’ve liked to have explored more processes in print which is something I’ll be looking into. This will improve the professionalism of my work. Print production – although I love print based design, not all of work looks professional in appearance. I think this is due to time management and so next time I’ll make sure to print professionally. Crit preparation – in order to get some helpful feedback I need to organise myself better. This will help with design development. Stock – Nice stock really improves the professionalism of a design and so I’ll be putting more money into this to make sure my prints are presented how I want them to be. 6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an ʻxʼ) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1 2 3 4 5 x Attendance x Punctuality x Motivation x Commitment x Quantity of work produced x Quality of work produced x Contribution to the group The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
