FRANCESCO MOT TOLA DESIGN SELECTED PROJECTS

ABOUT ME

FR ANCESCO M OT TO L A

A creative and passionate personality, born and raised in south of Italy, living in the Netherlands. I am deeply interested in art, design, illustration and fashion, basically every field in which creativity is demanded. This is my everyday engine. I think that a creative approach is important for everything we do in life. During my educational background I developed skills as industrial designer and I gained then experience working in spatial and interior design sector in collaboration with studios. In the meantime I love to develop personal artworks, illustrations and characters that I like to collect and transform digitally in graphic elaborates that I can share on my Tumblr page.

I like to play with different ideas and blend them into visual projects showing my fascinations for nature structures and human figures. Organic shape, curves and strong colors are my privileged choice when I design and this tendency can be also perceived in my projects of interior and product design. This portfolio rapresent a collection of some selected projects that I have done during my bachelor and professional experiences. It shows my personal development as designer and different approaches that I have been studying and applying to several projects on a different scale.

DESCRIPTION

Architecture, Interior

Frattamaggiore is a little town in the hinterland of the city of Naples, south of Italy. Here the hemp cultivation and the manufacture of ropes are historical traditions. The aim of the project is to define an attractive public space in order to give a new evocative memorial image of the hemp plants. The idea is to create a green plate that cover the intire lot, cutted in several points by axes that make possible accesses to an internal square. The structure will offer to the neibourhood several kind of activities such as a museum, restaurant, library and nursery.

CLIENT Municipality of Frattamaggiore

W H AT I D I D Concept, renders, drawings

The project is been designed and articulated in three different levels. Five separated buildings make the first level. The second level is made by a roof-garden on top of the buildings. It rapresents a green spot in the middle of the city but also important in terms of inside circularity of people, connecting the five buildings through several gangways. The third and last level is a glass tunnel wedged into the towers of the buildings that becomes an attractive element from the inside and the sourrounding context. This, supported by pilotis becames itself the memorial symbol of the hemp tree.

5

The roof garden is conceived with a high water retention, increased acoustic and thermal insulation, increase the thermal inertia of the structures, induction of airborne dust, reduction of the “heat island. The use of a green cover not only improves the climatic conditions inside of the building, but also brings benefits to the whole context (no CO2 emission)

In this project I designed the interiors of the bar and a lounge space of a big Club called Phoenix. The nature is the inspiration of some

of continuity to both spaces. The main structure of the bar counter is composed by a wooden frame that gives the idea of a sequence of trees backlit by a barrisol surface behind spreading led light. In the lounge the trees effect is given by the approaching of 12 wooden panels hanging on the wall and cutted in order to shape the trees through the empty space between one and another. The lounge space is organized through a system of sits in wengè wood located along the sizes of the room.

Interior,Restyling

This project is a restyling of a clothing store in Naples. The aim

of the owner was to exalt as much as possible the tradition of the product and give a better visibility to every single item. fr this reason shoes and bags are inserted and showcased in frames on the walls like artworks in a museum. As regards the layout of the space I elaborate the distribution considering the interest that the clients usually have for the selection offered from the store throughout the years. After understood their priority I designed furniture that use the minimum space being anyway functional, not only for the visitors but also for the people working inside the store. The double ceiling, wholy designed in barrisol, has a traslucent finishing that diffuse light in the space but also a decorative motif which rapresent the flow of people browsing, projected from the ground to the ceiling.

“Welcome in hotel” was a competition in which I took part during my studies. The project deals with designing the interior of an existing space and creating a hotel inside. The name has been chosen because, concerning shapes and colours, the hotel is inspired by the “Rubik’s cube”, a very famous riddle in the 80s. its style is, at the same time, joking and modern, so that the hotel is mostly intended to young people. The disposition of the cube’s colours in the various rooms of the hotel has been arranged according to the principle of “Chromotherapy”: everything is linked to the activities which are carried out in that specific room.

Getting into the hotel, this is the first room the guests bump into. On the ceiling and on the walls there are all the colours of the Rubick’s cube, but the white, fresh and energetic, prevails.

Living Design, Exterior Design

The project is a revaluation of a court in Via Maffei 5 in the city of Marchanise (CE). The brief of the project is to use the space differently to give to the people living that court possibility to live and use it in the best way with the minimum intervention. The porpose is to develop a further space along the existent seizes of the building that allow people to walk and to spend lesure time. It is been created, on the first floor of the court, a mezzanine hosting bench and tables in which eventually people can play or just sit and socialize. This elevation is made to give the idea, from the entrance, that the people are almost “souspended during their leisure time, this effect is reached especially during the night thanks to a light technology installed; cast lumina technology. To create the effect of full and empty, methacrylate panels, cast lumina enlight the space creating a soft athmosphere of soft light.

Bachelor Degree Thesis

In the final examination I analyzed the theme of the temporary shops as retail phenomenon. Chiaiano is a district part of the northen area of the city of Naples. Far away from the see but covered by a dense forests where, from centuries, farms grew generating different kind of local productions. The most popular and appraciated production is the cherry one and all the products made with this fruit. Once identified this local production the aim of this project is to create a market in which those products can be visible and create a “buzz” through the strategy of the temporary shop. Here design meet retail and create a temporary event in one of the focal point of the district, the metropolitan station. The project is conceived as a part of an already approved artistic revalutation of the the area in which artists and designer are comitted to give an artistic contribution to this area of the city. In this scenario my project and research rappresent a complement in terms of industrial and retail design.

Cast lumina is the latest evolution in the PMMA lighting world. It is usually a technology for pubblicity and glazing media. In this project is applyied for an indoor porpose. The concept of the lamp is to create a lighting furniture that can be used, not only to enlight environment, but also as hanging spot or to separate one place in two part and giving some privacy to whom is sharing a bed room. Through the cast lumina technology is also possible to customize the lamp inserting pictures (poster) define your color light of the led. The project involves the development of a lunch-box. The aim is to create a lunch-box that combines aesthetics and function by using innovative systems. The aesthetic quality has been achieved thanks to the bio-inspired imput of diatoms. Through a research of new technologies in developing state I have included in the project micro Peltier generators and a solar cooker. Micro Peltier generator is a technology designed by researchers at the High-Tech Research Center of the University of Kanagawa, Japan. This technology is able to cool small areas through a micro metal point, while the solar cooker works using sun energy.
