WELC OM E TO T H E F I R ST I SSU E O F “ V ERITA S ” - T H E R ADI O V ER IT A S NEW SL E T T E R ! Pope Francis said about Catholic Radio: “I would say that the radio, Catholic Radio, is the closest we have today to a universal pulpit. And where we can announce, through radio, human values, religious values, and above all to proclaim Jesus Christ, the Lord; and give the Lord the grace to make room for Him in our lives.” And Radio Veritas fits that description perfectly! However, if there is one thing that radio lacks, it is a visual impact - you can’t “see” radio! Who are the people behind the mike? What do they look like? What does Radio Veritas look like? Well, that is where the website comes in, and as an offshoot of the website, this newsletter. The website, www.radioveritas.co.za, and this periodical newsletter attempt to bring you the “Good News” behind “The Good News for a Change”. The newsletter, which will be produced at least once a quarter, will keep you up to date with happenings, past, present and future at Radio Veritas. In this flip-page format, the newsletter is in reality just a another form of website, but designed to give you the “look and feel” of a real publication. It has quite a few benefits over a conventional, printed magazine - it is “green” (very little impact on the environment), it is easy to distribute, and just as easy to pass on! So if you enjoy reading about the “Who’s who” and “What’s what” at South Africa’s only Catholic Radio Station, please simply mail the link to friends or post it on your Facebook page! It is the newsletter’s intention to stimulate interaction from readers and listeners, and we welcome comments, criticism, suggestions and other input - tell us what you would like and we will try to include it in the newsletter. Click Here to contact us with your ideas and suggestions. The preparation and distribution of this newsletter is sponsored by SA Catholic Online - South Africa’s only Catholic web resources portal!

oin Father Emil of Radio Veritas as he leads a group of pilgrims to the canonisation of Mother Teresa from 2 - 11 September this year. This pilgrimage is jointly organised by Radio Veritas and The Southern Cross, and is run by Fowler Tours. T date about 20 pilgrims have booked , and we are hoping to double that number. Should this happen the cost of the pilgrimage will drop below the present figure of R 37,000 . We will be visiting Rome and Assisi. This is a pilgrimage not to be missed.

Highlight of the pilgrimage is the big event: the canonisation ceremony of Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata, the founder of the Missionary Sisters of Charity. Born on 26 August, 1910 in Skopje, in present-day Macedonia, Mother Teresa became known as an Angel of Mercy for her care for the ill and the poor on the streets of Calcutta (as it was called then). She died on 5 September 1997. Blessed Mother Teresa was beatified by St John Paul II in 2003. In December 2015, Pope Francis recognised a second miracle that cleared
the way for her sainthood. Pope Francis will preside over the canonisation of one of the most significant and popular Catholic figures of the 20th century. There will be pilgrims from all over the world in St Peter’s Square, waving the flags of their countries. Let’s proudly fly our South African flag! The pilgrimage will cover: ROME: The Canonisation of Mother Teresa; a Wednesday papal audience; four major basilicas; the Vatican Museum; the Sistine Chapel; a Tour of Baroque Rome; plus a visit to the Basilica of Santa Sabina, and the Church of St Alphonsus, where the original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is located. ASSISI: We visit the Basilicas of St Francis (left) and St Clare and St Mary of the Angels Basilica, as well as the Eremo delle Carceri. We will also go to the Rieti Valley, where St Francis moved to from Assisi, including Greccio (where he invented the Nativity Scene) and Fonte

VERITAS GETS A NEW VAN!
R
adio Veritas took delivery of a brand-new VW Caddy on March 1st this year! We are very grateful to the Archdiocese of Munich which provided practically all the funds needed. The shortfall was met by two generous Portuguese listeners who also provided the funds needed for branding the vehicle as well as providing us with a very appropriate trailer. At long last we have the transport needed for getting about Johannesburg with or without recording equipment!

PAPAL NUNCIO VISITS VERITAS
VISIT
A
rchbishop Peter Wells, the new Apostolic Nuncio to South Africa, recently paid Radio Veritas a visit. He was accompanied by Archbishop Slattery of the Archdiocese of Pretoria who interviewed the Nuncio during his Drive Time show. Archbishop Wells was keen to come to the studios and see the only Catholic radio station in South Africa. Needless to say he was very impressed with what he saw and was very amenable to future contact. He is certainly a very well informed and
approachable person and we were honoured by his visit. Archbishop Wells’ appointment was announced by the Vatican on February 9, and Pope Francis also elevated him to the titular see of Marcianopolis, with the dignity of archbishop. He is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the United States. For the past six years, Archbishop Wells was the Assessor for the General Affairs of the Secretariat of State, a position equivalent to deputy chief of staff, which handles most Church affairs apart from relations with states.
He served in this key role since July 16, 2009, first under Archbishop (now Cardinal) Fernando Filoni and since May 2011 under Archbishop Giovanni Angelo Becciu who as ‘Substitute’ to the Secretariat of State, (or chief of staff) is the third ranking official in the Vatican. Archbishop Wells has worked in the Vatican since 2002 in the First Section of the Secretariat of State, and was head of its Anglophone desk from 2006-09. A polyglot, he also speaks Italian, Spanish and German fluently. Ve r i t a s | J u n e 2 0 1 6

WATER, WATER! Up until recently, Radio Veritas appealed to listeners and Dominican schools in Gauteng to drop off 5l bottles of water for distribution to drought-stricken areas, especially Senekal in the Free State. This was to celebrate the 800th Jubilee of the Dominican Order as well as the Jubilee Year of Mercy by providing drink to the thirsty – one of the corporal works of mercy. We are happy to say that we delivered 30 tons of water to Senekal and another 8 tons was despatched. We are grateful to the donors and to the companies which provided the transport. The picture shows some of the hundreds of 5l bottles in our storeroom prior to despatch to Senekal.

Remember RV in Your Will!
W
e have often appealed to listeners to include us in their wills, and we are aware of one or two people who have done so. We are happy to report that one regular donor included us in her will and we have just now received her legacy. We have walked in faith and trust and now thank God for this gift which for the time being will take us out of the deep waters once again. Please do remember this generous donor in your prayers as we ask the Lord to grant her eternal rest and peace.

T
hanks to a donation received from a donor in America, we are now able to proceed with furnishing a facility we have at Radio Veritas where candidates will be trained. This facility will also provide us with muchneeded meeting space to hold bigger meetings. This exciting project will become the jewel of African Catholic broadcasting! St. Augustine College will be collaborating with us in providing the necessary input and in the end the diploma will be awarded by the College. Training will be offered not only to local Catholic journalists but also to journalists from other countries in Africa. The picture at right shows what the room where the new facility will be situated currently looks like. Ve r i t a s | J u n e 2 0 1 6

A
fter several years, our studio computers needed replacing. We appealed to listeners and many have responded generously to defray the R50 000 cost. A big thank you to all those who have already contributed and if any would still like to contribute, please send your donations to us at Nedbank Cresta 191305 and account number 1913296067. Please indicate your name and phone number on the deposit slip.
Studio Air Conditioning Air conditioning in the studio has been a problem for a long time, and we have had to replace our studio air-conditioners. This has cost us almost R 45 000. This and other necessary expenses have depleted our coffers and for this reason we have been going through a cash flow problem and appealing for help. Thank you to those who have responded so generously, but we are not out of the woods yet!
