WIT H OU T YO U R ADI O V ER IT A S W OU L D N O T B E AB L E T O F U N CTION! T H AN K Y O U ! Every day the voice of Radio Veritas reaches out and touches
the lives of thousands of South African Catholics (and many across our borders as well!) - you only need to listen to some of the calls and messages received by Fr Emil Blaser OP during his Matins programme in the morning! For many, the daily and Sunday Masses broadcast on Radio Veritas are the only opportunities they will have to hear Mass. The broad spectrum of programming presented by Radio Veritas offers listeners Catholic news, formation, information, prayer and so much more. There is therefore no doubt that Catholic radio is an essential and integral part of the communication and evangelisation efforts of the Church in South Africa. However, like all such institutions around the world, Radio Veritas is generally unsubsidised, and due to the nature of its target audience, is not an automatic choice for major advetisers.
THAT IS WHERE YOU COME IN!
For many years now, a faithful core of individuals, companies and institutions has kept Radio Veritas alive, and enabled it to achieve its mandate, and more! There have been times, and they are becoming and more frequent, that it has seemed that the station must close its doors, but always YOU, and the Holy Spirit, have intervened and responded to desperate and prayerful call for help. For this we sincerely and prayerfully say THANK YOU! And please continue the good work! In the pages of this magazine, you will get a glimpse of what Radio Veritas has been able to achieve with YOUR support.

or some 42 Radio Veritas/Southern Cross pilgrims, this was the journey of a lifetime: a pilgrimage to Italy to witness the canonisation of Mother Teresa.
Fr Emil was going to lead the tour, but for health reasons had to stay home. I was more than happy to take his place! Also in the group was Alice Hohenstein, the winner of the annual Radio Veritas Pilgrimage Competition. (Front row of the picture, seated at the extreme left) The pilgrimage was conceived by Fowler Tours, the only South African pilgrimage operator to send a group to this historic event. Radio Veritas and Fowler Tours have organized several pilgrimages before, including the one to the canonisation of the two popes in 2014, and like all of them before, the Mother Teresa Canonisation Pilgrimage was perfectly organised. We witnessed the canonisation of Mother Teresa in St Peter’s Square in a heat which made even us Africans Ve r i t a s | O c t o b e r 2 0 1 6
wilt in the sun. The day after the group returned to St Peter’s Square to attend the Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Cardinal Parolin, the top cardinal in the Vatican. On two occasions the we had the privilege to venerate the relics of St Mother Teresa, first at St John Lateran Basilica and then at the Basilica of St Gregory, where we also saw the simple room where Mother Teresa stayed when she came to Rome. The pilgrims entered the Holy Doors of Rome’s four major basilicas, and prayed before the original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the church of St Alphonsus Liguori before having Mass there, celebrated by the four priests who were part of the group. We also saw Pope Francis, up close and in person, twice as he was driven around St Peter’s Square, after the canonisation and then at the weekly general audience. Led by an expert guide, we saw the great sights of Rome, like the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, and got
a close look at the interior of St Peter’s basilica and the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel. From Rome we went to Assisi, visiting the medieval town of St Francis and St Clare just a couple of weeks before Pope Francis went there. But before that, we stopped at a very special place which only Fowler Tours include in their itineraries: Greccio. This sanctuary near Rieti was where St Francis and his companions stayed, and where St Francis invented the Nativity Scene. In this peaceful place the group had Mass, which was offered for Fr Bonaventure Hinwood OFM who had died that morning. After a lunch, courtesy of Gail of Fowler Tours, who accompanied the group with her able assistant and son Michael, we came to beautiful Assisi. There we saw the tombs of St Francis and St Clare, the place where St Francis died, and their actual cloaks and other possessions, and entered two more Holy Doors. This was a very devout

pilgrimage, and many prayers were said for Radio Veritas, and our listeners, supporters, friends and staff. But there were also many laughs, much singing and consumption of too much Italian gelato. Some life-long friendships were struck up and many memories were made to last for a lifetime. I have now been hit by the pilgrimage bug and I can’t wait to go to the Holy Land again, with Gail and Fowler Tours, during Lent in March 2017.

MORE LIVE BROADCASTS -

adio Veritas took delivery of a brand-new VW Caddy on March 1st this year, thanks to the generosity of the Archdiocese of Munich and two generous listeners who also provided the funds needed for branding the vehicle as well as providing us with a very appropriate trailer. This has enabled to us to increase our presence out there and to provide more live broadcasts of events, such as the Episcopal ordinations of two new bishops: Duncan Tsoke, auxiliary of Johannesburg, and Siegfried Jwara, the new Bishop of Ingwavuma.

- THANKS TO YOUR GENEROSITY! Both ordinations were broadcast live which has added considerably to our experience of live broadcasts. It is a great tribute to our staff that everything went smoothly. In the near future Radio Veritas will be conducting live broadcasts from parishes. This will be an opportunity of showcasing our broadcast abilities and creating excitement in parishes. In recent months, now that we have our own transport, we have been visiting parishes to inform them about Radio Veritas and also on other occasions, to do recordings of talks and events. Some of these events included the Winter Living Theology course, the AIDS conference in Durban and other talks at places like St. Augustine’s College.

GOLF DAY
adio Veritas hosted yet another successful Golf Day at the Serengeti Golf Club on October 4th, 2016.
Tee-off was at 11am and the Prize Giving Gala Dinner was at 6pm. The day saw five Priests, representatives from four Dioceses, and people from a number deaneries and parishes supporting the station. “We are pleased to see that our Catholic community is slowly embracing our Golf Day”, said Fr Emil Blaser, Director at Radio Veritas. Corporate South Africa supported us but not in their numbers. “We are hoping that with timeous planning next year and more volunteers assisting us , more and more sponsorships will be concluded and made available,’ said Mahadi Buthelezi, Radio Veritas’ Marketing, Events and Advertising Officer. “This year, there were 92 players on the green and about 100 guests at the prize giving dinner. We are hoping to make the Golf Day bigger and better in 2017. Radio Veritas wishes to thank all who participated in this year’s Golf Day - players as well as sponsors like Manny de Atouguia of Liquor City and Chris Elfick, who acted as MC and auctioneer and who contributed some significant prizes. We are also grateful to Mahadi Buthelezi and Khanya Litabe and their team who did much of the organising.

WE MOURN THE DEATH OF FR PATRICK FR MOHOLO PATRICK MASELWANE OMI
O
n 8 July 2016 we heard with great sadness of the untimely death of one of our board members and a presenter on Radio Veritas, Father Mohohlo Patrick Maselwane OMI.
Father Patrick was a frequent visitor to Radio Veritas and a very popular presenter. Radio Veritas had a special place in his heart and he loved spending time with us. We always knew he was in the house because of his jovial presence. He was a great teaser. He will never be forgotten. Fr Pat was born in 1963. He joined the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1986 and after studying at Cedara and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he was ordained a deacon in 1994, was ordained to the priesthood in December, of the same year at Regina Mundi, in Soweto. Fr Pat’s first assignment as a

priest was as a formator in the OMI pre-novitiate. He taught in the then St Peter Seminary in Garsfontein, Pretoria. He served in various parishes as a parish priest, including Our Lady of the Assumption, Molapo, St Margaret’s and Inmaculate Conception in Diepkloof, Christ the King, Orlando and St Peter Claver, Pimville. His last assignment was at Sacred Heart Parish in Katlehong. Fr Pat sat on various boards, including that of Radio Veritas and of St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview.
Fr Maselwane was multifaceted: He was also a presenter of the Sesotho programme, Letsemeng on Radio Veritas, and held various positions in the Archdiocese: Vicar for Family Life, Consulter in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, Chairperson of the Council of Priests in Johannesburg, District Superior of the Oblate community in Soweto, Dean of Soweto Deanery, Lecturer at the Soweto School of Theology and was on the Protocol Conduct Committee. May God grant him eternal rest and give great comfort and strength to his mother and family and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the congregation to which he belonged.

NEW STRATEGY & BRANDING FOR RADIO VERITAS IMPROVING YOUR STATION! Over the past few months the staff of Radio Veritas has been undergoing a weekly strategy session with Andrew Masongwa (top left). This has always taken place on Tuesdays and involved the whole staff. This has been a very worthwhile experience as we have grown together even more as a team. Spending this time together, we have refined
our vision and mission and have come to own it. Mr Masongwa is the CEO of several companies and an expert strategist. Over and above this he is a devout Catholic. Our marketing team has also met with Mr Thebe Ikalafeng - internationally known as Mr. Brand SA - concerning the rebranding of the station.
ONGOING STAFF FORMATION!
Besides the weekly strategy sessions that we have been having with Andrew Masongwa, some of our staff are continuing to develop their knowledge and skills in radio. Khanya Litabe spent the month of June at the Wits radio Academy. It was hard not having him for month! Siphiwe Moloi was away for two weeks at the same Academy. Earlier Simba Honde did the same. Sheila Pires continues her studies at UNISA. This is all good news as our staff improve their skills but it’s not easy living without them!
SCHOOL OF CATHOLIC BROADCASTING
Our facility at Radio Veritas for the future school of Catholic radio broadcasting is rapidly taking shape (right). This project has been made possible thanks to a donor in the United States, through EWTN. It will be a splendid facility at the service of the Catholic Church in South Africa which EWTN sees as the jewel of Africa as far as Catholic broadcasting is concerned. The School will need ongoing financial support. We are happy that our courses will be linked to St. Augustine’s University which will in the end grant the diplomas. We are hoping to run our first course at the beginning of 2017. Ve r i t a s | O c t o b e r 2 0 1 6

Radio Veritas Thanks you!
YOUR DONATIONS!
THANK YOU!
Veritas Listeners assist the Kolping Society!
Following an on-air appeal, Radio Veritas listeners recently donated a quantity of jumble to the Kolping Johannesburg Family. The Kolping Society received a large number of bags of jumble from Radio Veritas listeners, and most of the jumble was distributed from the Zandspruit or Riverlea Kolping Familes to the poor and needy Some of the better quality jumble was sorted and put into bags, and these are offered for sale at a minimal fee by township ladies, so that they can further on-sell the clothes in their communities, thus making a profit for themselves - this is one of the ways the Kolping Society tries empower people to start up their own businesses. A BIG thank to all Radio Veritas listeners who responded to this the request for jumble - please keep it up!
Sanitary Towels
The South African Police Services in Alexandra recently ran an appeal for sanitary towels to be provided to younger girls in Alexandra so that they could attend school. We broadcast this appeal on air, and we are happy to report that this was a very successful campaign with thousands of sanitary towels being donated. These continue to be dropped off at Radio Veritas. Donations for this cause are most welcome. Ve r i t a s | O c t o b e r 2 0 1 6
Water We have had an ongoing appeal on air for donations of water drought stricken communities in the Free State.
We are happy to report that about five loads of water have been delivered to Senekal and Kroonstad. It is difficult to express the great appreciation of the people in receiving this water.
In a special way we would like to Antonio Villanella of Efficient Engineering for providing the necessary transport free of charge.

CASH DONATIONS!
THANK YOU!
Sacred Heart Sodality
The Sacred Heart Sodality presented us with their annual contribution of R50,000.00. We are very grateful to them for this very generous donation.
Sodality of the Kemolos & the CWL Recently two members of the Sodality of the Kemolos paid us a visit and presented us with a cheque for R12,000. This was a significant contribution from the relatively small sodality. We are truly grateful and look forward to other sodalities following their example. We were also happy to receive a donation of R14,100 from the Catholic Women’s League of the Archdiocese of Johannesburg. We are most grateful for these donations.

MATTERS DOMINICAN!
800TH ANIVERSARY
I
n 2016, the Order of Preachers, more commonly known as the Dominicans after their founder St Dominic de Guzman, celebrate the 800th anniversary of the official foundation of the Order by Pope Honorius III in 1216, with a Jubilee Year with the theme “Sent to Preach the Gospel”. As Radio Veritas is essentially a Dominican project, this has special significance for the Station. The Jubilee Year is being celebrated by Dominicans all around the world - friars, sisters and lay people - from 7 November, 2015 (Feast of All Saints of the Order) to 21 January, 2017 (the date of the official Papal Bull Gratiarum omnium largitori of Pope Honorius III). On 20 June 2016, the Master General of the Dominican Order, Fr Bruno Cadore OP paid us a visit together with two of his assistants, Fr Dominic Izzo OP and Fr Gabriel Samba OP. They were in South Africa on a canonical visitation. After being shown around the station

and meeting our staff, and after a few words of encouragement by the General, we were treated to a finger lunch. Needless to say, they were impressed with Radio Veritas. A special Jubilee song has been composed and is being played throughout the world and is often heard on Radio Veritas. Click on the video graphic below to listen to it. On 30 July about 2000 past and present pupils of Dominican schools gathered at St. Dominic’s Convent in Boksburg to celebrate the occasion. A similar event took place on 9 August at Fatima Convent in Durban North.

SA CATHOLIC RESOURCES ONLINE PRODUCES UNIQUE TRI-LINGUAL PRAYER BOOK PRAYER BOOK SA Catholic Resources Online, in association with the Sodality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, has published what is believed to be the first book of prayers of its kind in South African Catholic circles. The book, with the rather long and imposing title “Prayers of the Sodality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Archdiocese of Johannesburg)”, is a collection of the most common prayers in use by the Sodality, precluding the need for members to access various books and scripts for their prayers. So what, you may say, there are plenty of books of prayers out there. What makes this book unique is that it offers the prayers in THREE languages – English, Zulu and Sotho - side by side! There is even a touch of Latin – making the book not just tri-lingual, but quadri-lingual! “Our membership is mainly drawn from people speaking those languages and we are very keen to make all our members comfortable saying the prayers in the languages of their fellow members,” says Treasurer Lillian Mathe, who has master-minded the project on behalf of the Sodality. “We believe we have gone a long way towards achieving this goal with this booklet.” The book is in landscape format to more easily accommodate the three columns, and is small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag. “It has been such a pleasure to work with Frank on this project,” said Lillian. “Not only has he been the most patient person to work with, and let me tell you when working with a team with their hands in lots of other pies, it can become very testing. From a creative point of view he has been the most forthcoming with the greatest ideas and graphics that are central to the Sacred Heart Sodality - it is as if he knows what we want before we can figure out how to express it. The pleasure further extends to his responsiveness to our hair-brained requests, quick and efficient to say the least. All this he does with the calm and accommodating spirit of an angel. “I am really proud of this booklet because of its content but more so because of the beautiful look, feel and quality that Frank has created. “Thank you Frank, and may the good Lord, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, bless you abundantly for being so ‘meek and humble of heart’.’ The book may be ordered from the website of the Sacred Heart Sodality or from the SA Catholic Online Bookstore. NEWS BRIEFS SHORT INSERTS Digital radio test at Veritas! Over the past few months Radio Veritas joined 19 other radio stations in transmitting over digital radio called DAB+. The test period for this superb quality of sound ended at the end of August. To experience the superb quality of DAB+ one needs to have a special receiver.
Radio Veritas invested in about a half a dozen of these for this trial period. Eventually, when digital radio is permanently introduced to South Africa, Radio Veritas will be broadcasting on the system called DRM - similar to DAB+ but better suited to medium wave.
New Maronite programme soon!
Fr Emil Recently interviewed Fr Maurice Chidiac of the Maronite community on his morning progamme Matins. Fr Maurice spoke of the richness of the Maronite tradition and the dedication of Maronite Catholics to the Church, especially here in South Africa. At one time he was a presenter on Radio Caritas in Lebanon and we are now planning to have him present a regular Maronite programme on Radio Veritas

NEWS BRIEFS SHORT INSERTS License renewal Earlier this year we received the good news that our radio broadcast license had been renewed for another for years. This is very good news and we are grateful that we can continue broadcasting the good news for a change.
Thanks to Ernst & Young For several years Ernst & Young have very generously done our audit free of charge. The director responsible has now retired and we shall be using the kind services of another auditor. We remain ever grateful to those responsible at Ernst & Young for their services over the years.
New computers We are very grateful to those listeners who contributed towards the renewal of studio computers. This switch over to the new computers did result in a few broadcast problems and we apologize for this. All the gremlins have been purged from the system and we trust that the reception is once again perfect. Thank you for your patience.
The Southern Cross
Every Monday morning five or six boxes of The Southern Cross are delivered to our offices in Edenvale for distribution to parishes in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg. This way they do not have to rely on the erratic services of the post office and people are sure of receiving their weekly Catholic newspaper. This is a service we provide and are happy to do so. N O W A “ SECU LA R” VE RSI O N OF SA CATHO LI C O N LI N E W RI T E-ON PU B LI SH I N G! COMMERCIAL SERVICES SA Catholic Online launched its new “secular” twin, Write-On Publishing, earlier this year and the new “baby”, designed to cater for projects with a more commercial and secular slant, has already chalked up some spectacular successes!
PUBLISHING:
1. Write-On Publishing has signed two St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, authors and has just produced its fourth book for them. Mike Silberbauer has written two delightful little books “Secrets of a Walking Stick” and “A Cottage in St Francis Bay”, which are now available from Write-On Publishing’s website. Bartle Logie is a well-known and best-selling author of travel/history books on the Eastern Cape and its environs, and Write-On has just released his 8th book: “Tales from an Unmapped Country”. Write-On also recently re-released Bartle’s popular seventh book “Boots in the Baviaans”, after it sold out its initial print run, and his previous publisher retired. Both books are available from the Write-On Publishing Online Bookstore. 2. Due for publication in late October is Fr Patrick Noonan’s book “From Jerusalem to Johannesburg” - a fascinating insight into his more than 40 years of Ministry in the townships of the Vaal Triangle. Fr Patrick is the best-selling author of “They’re Burning the Churches”, his dramatic account of the anti-apartheid violence in those townships in the 1970s and 1980s.

3. Write-On Publishing was responsible for the production of, and will take care of the distribution of a great new murder mystery, set in Dublin, Ireland, called “A Terrible Beauty - the murder at Joyce’s Tower”. The book is by South African author V.M. Devine. Who, you might ask, is V.M. Devine? None other than a collaboration between Radio Veritas volunteer broadcaster and author of seven theological and scriptural history books, Mike Mahony, and his daughter, Valerie Gansevoort!
