Grande Provence Releases New Heritage Tasting Menu Grande Provence, the landmark 1694 Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek, has gone back to its culinary roots with a new Heritage Tasting Menu.

Prepared by Marvin Robyn, the passionate young head chef who is bringing new energy to The Restaurant at Grande Provence, the Heritage Tasting Menu is available exclusively to dinner guests. The menu offers a wide selection of fresh, local ingredients expertly prepared with Chef Marvin’s own twist on South African heirloom recipes. With dishes such as Malay onions, smoked snoek & fish kaiings; ox tongue with sweet mustard & pickled butternut; lamb rump, morogo & rooibos jus; and springbok rump with mielie pap, chakalaka, buchu & honey jus, the menu is a collection of true South African heritage food. Grande Provence celebrates its 325 year heritage in every facet of its operations, from the 17th century buildings to The Gallery focusing on local artists using age-old techniques with a contemporary vision. Chef Marvin, who cut his culinary teeth helping his grandmother produce trays of herzoggies for her catering business, graduated with distinction from the acclaimed Institute of Culinary Arts (ICA) in his home town of Stellenbosch. Before joining the Grande Provence team towards the end of 2018, he gained valuable experience working with leading chefs in a number of top winelands restaurants including Delaire Graff, CuvÊe at Simonsig, Equus at Cavalli and finally Makaron at Majeka House. At Grande Provence, Marvin has shown tremendous leadership ability despite his young age and is an enthusiastic mentor to the rest of the kitchen brigade with endless good energy and new ideas. He describes his cooking style as refined South African classics, bringing new inspiration and modernity to local heritage food. The Restaurant at Grande Provence is open daily for lunch and dinner. The new dinner Heritage Tasting Menu is priced at R495 for four courses and R595 for five courses. An à la carte menu is available for lunch. Both menus offer pairing suggestions for every dish from the wide range of elegant Grande Provence wines. To book your table, call 021 876 8600 or email reservations@grandeprovence.co.za

Wine Tasting with a Difference at Black Elephant Vintners All Roads Lead to the Old Road Wine Co.

At the Old Road Wine Co. you’ll find a friendly fat man inviting you in for a delicious meal, a blacksmith with impeccable taste, a smous ready to assist you with whatever you may need, a postman taking you on a journey of discovery and a gentle Anemos breeze keeping you company while you peer across the magnificent Franschhoek Mountains. Once inside, you’ll come across The Fat Man restaurant where you can indulge in contemporary cuisine and delicious flatbreads from Nonna, the wood-fired oven. The original Fat Man after whom the restaurant was named, used to be an institution at the local train station, where he would greet new and familiar faces with a friendly smile and interesting anecdote. You’ll relish the view of the majestic Franschhoek Mountains from the Anemos deck, which takes its name from the Greek mythical origin of wind in reference to our very own South Easter. If meticulous wine craftsmanship is what you’re after, visit the Anvil tasting room, a tribute to the once indispensable local blacksmith, who forged iron with his sledge and anvil over an open fire to create items that were both necessities and works of art. At the 12 Mile wine bar, you’ll find our full selection of wines; the name a nod to the loyal perseverance of the postman of old. Not deterred by rain or shine, a 12-mile distance or fatigue, this messenger never faltered. For something to take home, visit The Smous shop, named after the old characterful local trader who would travel far and wide with his trusty truck filled with provisions of every shape and kind. At the Old Road Wine Co., we offer you experiences and stories that go beyond a winery and its vineyards. www.oldroadwinecompany.co.za

Black Elephant Vintners was born out of synchronicity, fortuitous friendships and a love for wine. Following on from the sale of Black Elephant Investment Holdings’ stake in Noah Financial Innovation in 2011, co-founder Kevin Swart uprooted his family and moved from Johannesburg to Franschhoek where he purchased a charming boutique wine farm, La Petite Vigne, situated on the outskirts of Franschhoek village. Six months later, his business partner and co-founder of Black Elephant Investment Holdings, Raymond Ndlovu, followed suit and the Ndlovus joined the Swarts in their fearless uncovering of a new life in the Franschhoek Valley. Black Elephant Vintners introduce fun into serious winemaking, while capturing the taste and terroir of the Franschhoek Valley in the wines they produce. Their diverse brand portfolio enables them to provide a range of wines with unique characteristics that appeal to different requirements, tastes and occasions – exciting, premium and distinctive at all times. Being the Rebels of the Vine, traditional wine and cheese pairings are not what you will find at Black Elephant Vintners. On offer, instead, is a Silent Disco experience where your inner rockstar can escape!! What better way to experience the world than with a glass of wine, music and nothing else? After a successful trip to the UK, where Kevin staged a Silent Disco at Jamie Oliviers’ 15 restaurant in Cornwall, he decided to bring the Silent Disco home. Grab a group of friends (maximum of 20) and head over, or catch them on tour as they will come to you! Alternatively, try the resourcefully composed Music and Wine pairing. This novel approach enhances the experience of wine tasting by utilising not only the senses of taste, touch, smell, and sight. This unique combination of sound and taste completely sets apart Black Elephant Vintners from the commercial wine industry. Allow approximately 2 hours for a tasting. 021 8762903 | rebels@bevintners.co.za 40A Uitkyk Street, Franschhoek

Lynx Estate – The Spirit of Transformation This boutique wine estate on the foothills of Klein Drakenstein Mountains is a place where authentic wines are produced, and ambitious plans are made.

Winemaker Helgard van Schalkwyk and his team put their heart and soul into achieving the optimal result and creating a wine range extending from uncomplicated everyday-drinking wines to characterful top-of-the-range products, like the soon-to-be-launched Reserve Range. In the wine cellar they still use many traditional techniques and equipment, which gives their reds a very unique taste that Lynx is known for. Lynx Estate is always the first in the valley to introduce the new vintage of their Rosé. It is a well-balanced Blanc de Noir, made from Merlot grapes and is a top choice as a fresh and easy-drinking summer wine. Worth a try are their Viognier and the new Chardonnay; two rich and luscious white wines. Rising above all is their flagship wine “The Spirit of Lynx”, which is a delightful Bordeaux blend worth sinning for. Within the next 10 months Lynx Estate aims to have completed new guesthouses with selfcatering units as well as luxurious B&B double rooms and suites. Next year the tasting room will undergo a major renovation and a new winery is also planned for 2020. Note their famous Blanc de Noir Launch on 6 and 7 April to experience the 2019 Rosé and all that Lynx Estate stands for. Alternatively, go on any other day and enjoy a private wine tasting on the terrace and adore the stunning view. www.lynxestate.com | 021 867 0406

Jazz on Fridays is Back

Finding the perfect venue to recapture this popular event was the first task in relaunching the legendary “Jazz Fridays” and Café des Arts ticked all the boxes. Situated in the Main Road opposite Woolworths you will find the alley to this breathtakingly beautiful venue under a canvas of massive trees. It is the place where the Franschhoekers can come together after a busy week every Friday at 17h30 and where the Franschhoek mainstays have their regular tables booked every week. Entrance is R250 per couple which includes a bottle of wine and awesome jazz. The last Jazz on Fridays was held 7 years ago at La Fromagerie restaurant La Grange, before it closed due to redevelopment. For many years it was one of the best attended events Franschhoek has ever seen and it has created great excitement in the town due to its return. Great jazz performed by the very popular Cape Dutch Connection with Franschhoek’s very own legend Derk Blaisse on piano. Joined by virtuoso Willie van Zyl on saxophone and double bass player Wesley Rustin who were there from the very beginning. Erika “Ella Fitxgerald” Lundi vocalist and Professor William Haubrich of UCT plays trumpet and trombone. The versatile Ivan Bell is on drums. A diverse menu has been created for Jazz on Fridays to cater for everyone, including stands with oysters and other delicious offerings. Franschhoek is extremely excited to welcome Derk and The Cape Dutch Connection band back! 021 876 2952 | www.cafedesarts.co.za

Anthony Shapiro brings Collect to Spice Route Destination

Spice Route Destination warmly welcomes another aesthetic treasure to the destination’s broad range of offerings, COLLECT, home to Anthony Shapiro’s exquisite ceramics. Anthony Shapiro started making pots when he was only 13 years old and even dropped out of law school to further his career as a ceramicist. After working as a pottery teacher from 1992 to 1997, his work was in such high demand that he started supplying décor and boutique shops in South Africa and abroad, which shortly led to the popular ‘ANT’ brand of bowls. After deciding to take a break in 2006, he became the resident artist at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, where he made ceramics in peace and silence for two years. A move to Cape Town in 2011 saw him teaching pottery at Art in the Forest Ceramic Hub in Constantia Nek, and served as executive director from June 2013 until November 2017, when the property was sold. For more information about Anthony Shapiro’s range of high quality ceramics, visit www.spiceroute.co.za

Abe Opperman Art in Franschhoek

Following the success of galleries in Johannesburg and Cape Town, Abe Opperman Art has opened its third space in the heart of Franschhoek at 11 Huguenot Street. “The opportunity to make bring Abe’s art to a new home in Franschhoek presented itself organically and we were all too willing to step into the beauty of the valley” says Ben Theron, curator of the galleries. Notwithstanding the proximity to Cape Town, he is excited that the new location will provide an alternative cultural context as well as expand the audience for Abe Opperman’s original works. After a successful career in floristry and interior design Abe established himself as a commercial artist exhibiting in Johannesburg. The Cape Town gallery opened in 2016. “I am immeasurably grateful and inspired by our presence in Franschhoek. We are in good company amongst the vineyards and mountains,” says Abe who grew up on an idyllic farm with a beautiful English country garden surrounded by towering trees and magnificent mountain ranges. The whimsical interpretations of the world he observes through the eyes of his inner child have been on display in the new Franschhoek gallery from 1 March 2019. www.abeopperman.co.za

ART MEETS WILDLIFE

RICHLAND RUM LAUNCHES IN SA

Make sure you add a Dave Hamman original to your collection. The body of work celebrates the spirit of the African wilderness, found in everything from the stoic Bateleur eagle to Acacia trees to leopard at dusk.

Award-winning American ‘farm to glass’ craft rum launches in South Africa. America’s only single-estate, single-barrel rum is now available in South Africa.

A professional wildlife photographer & fine artist, Dave is fiercely passionate about awareness to endangered African species and has also penned two coffee-table books, Running Wild: Dispelling the Myths of the African Wild Dog and Cheetah – co-authored by experts in their field, including Dr. Tico McNutt and Dr. Luke Hunter.

Richland Rum, a family-owned, award-winning rum from Georgia, stays true to traditional rum making standards, with the purest ingredients and a no-rush approach producing quality products. The brand has been making rum for the past 20 years, using two varietals of sugar cane grown in the sandy soils of the Richland Estate, distilling in copper pots and using oak barrels for maturation. Richland Rum practices ultra-high sustainability farming methods as part of their farming practice, which comes not as a cost-saving exercise but with a desire to protect the available resources. This opulent Shiraz is crafted from specially selected vines. Merely 4 single bunches are grown per singular vine to produce only the most expressive grapes from distinctly unique terroirs. Each bunch is individually nurtured and manicured by hand. The Black Lion is hand-crafted in a separate cellar-withina-cellar at De Toren and here it is also fermented and aged in New French Oak barrels for a period of 18 months in total. Little wonder is has been hailed worldwide as one of the finest ultrapremium wines to emerge from South Africa. www.de-toren.com
