Celebrate with Le Petit Manoir

Le Petit Manoir has just celebrated its one year anniversary and it is hard to believe that this little five-star guest house, restaurant and deli which exudes exclusivity and luxury has only been around for a year. Having made quite a name for itself in the picturesque village of Franschhoek, it is clear to see why it has already become a firm favourite among locals and visitors alike. Recently elevated to head chef position, Scott Armstrong brings years of experience in the kitchen with exciting new dishes and attention to detail. Born in the Philippines, and raised in Ladybrand in the Free State, his name comes from his dads’ heritage as a proud Scotsman. This skateboard loving chef, has trained under some of the greats including Chris Erasmus from Foliage and Neil Jewell of Jewells at Spice Route. Taking the position of head chef at le Petit Manoir has been one of Scott’s highest achievements to date and no small feat in this industry. Although he has some big shoes to fill, Scott’s passion and commitment has ensured that he is staying on top of his game and continuing to produce the quality dishes that Le Petit Manoir has become synonymous with. The design behind his menu is based on seasonality and classic

combinations and this winter, Le Petit Manoir is pulling out all the stops with an array of exciting specials.

Accommodation Special-R2850 for an overnight stay with breakfast and a four-course food and wine pairing for two.

The evenings may see the restaurant transform into a premier fine dining experience but lunchtimes are a mostly casual and vibey affair, inviting guests to enjoy platters, pastas and toasties with hand crafted cocktails and mocktails too, for just R50 each!

If you are a Franschhoek local, there is even more reason to visit Le Petit Manoir as they are part of the Franschhoek Life Local program which give cardholders a 10% discount off the bill, 365 days a year!

The new menu showcases the likes of vindaloo chicken curry with sambals, pork croquettes and pasta carbonara to name a few and the homemade ice cream can bring us to our knees! For those wanting something more substantial, there is a three-course lunch special with a glass of L’ormarins Brut Classique for R350pp or a four-course food and wine pairing special for R450pp. And if you have had too much of a good thing, take advantage of the August

Women Making Waves in Gastronomy In celebration of women’s month, we honour some of the culinary professionals who are not only at the top of their game and the game; they are also tearing down preconceptions and building vast empires in a largely male-dominated world. CAROLIZE COETZEE – TOKARA WINE & OLIVE FARM, STELLENBOSCH Carolize grew up in Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, where she recalls enjoying her mother’s lovingly prepared food and mastering heirloom family recipes. In 2018, she became executive chef at Tokara Restaurant, which serves terroir focused contemporary cuisine, award-winning wines, and dramatic views over Stellenbosch and False Bay. MARGOT JANSE – ISABELO CHARITY, FRANSCHHOEK AND, PREVIOUSLY, THE TASTING ROOM AT LE QUARTIER FRANÇAIS For 21 years, Margot Janse was the rock star chef behind The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français. Over the course of her time here, she was named Eat Out DSTV Chef of the Year in both 2002 and 2012. In 2017, Margot established Isabelo, the charity she started with her restaurant team, which provides nutritious meals to needy children in the Franschhoek Valley. Margot is also chief judge on the Eat Out Awards judging panel. MICHÉLLE THERON – HAZENDAL WINE ESTATE, STELLENBOSCH Michélle Theron is the supreme talent behind the Russian-South African fusion cuisine served at AvantGarde, the new restaurant at Hazendal Wine Estate. Her career has spanned from SA to Holland and back. In 2010, Michélle joined Pierneef à La Motte, where, in 2014, she became executive chef. In 2018, she was appointed head chef of Avant-Garde Restaurant, where she has been impressing the socks off diners ever since.

NICOLENE BARROW – LE LUDE WINE ESTATE, FRANSCHHOEK Nicolene, trained as a chef in Europe, before setting up Orangerie Restaurant at Le Lude Estate. She is also a member of the international (and prestigious) gastronomic society La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, the membership of which is by invitation only. Orangerie serves French cuisine with a contemporary twist, combining “the purist, disciplined approach of the European masters with a hint of individual, modern creativity” to create dishes that look as good as they taste! TINA JEWELL – JEWELL’S RESTAURANT, PAARL Tina first discovered the joy of baking when she was just 12-years-old by making chocolate éclairs. Originally a Liverpudlian, her family immigrated to South Africa in 1975. Honing her skills back in the UK at Oakes with Chris Oakes, Dellugo in Soho, Stephen Bull, Blandford Street, and Conrad Chelsea Hotel. After the success of their restaurant Bread & Wine at Môreson Wine Estate, Tina and her chef husband, Neil Jewell, together with Chef Liam Tomlin, opened “Jewells” at Paarl’s Spice Route. VANIE PADAYACHEE, THE “SPICE GIRL” – PREVIOUSLY OF THE MARIGOLD AUTHENTIC INDIAN, FRANSCHHOEK Vanie was born and raised and studied in Durban, before working with award-winning chef Margot Janse at Le Quartier Français. In 2016, after travelling to India to train in Delhi, Vanie returned to Leeu Collection as head of Marigold Authentic Indian restaurant in Franschhoek and today she is taking a much needed break before announcing her next culinary adventure!

August in Franschhoek Franschhoek Mystery Weekends 23 & 24 August 27 & 28 September

Not only does August symbolize winter drawing to an end, it’s also a month of great importance to South African women. On 9 August as we celebrate National Women’s Day, let’s not forget some of the remarkable women of Franschhoek, who have worked tirelessly to put the region on the map, both throughout South Africa as well as abroad. They represent the various sectors in the valley – from wine, accommodation, retail and restaurant – and we greatly appreciate their efforts. Too many to list, but those who come to mind include the likes of Irene de Fleuriot of La Bri Wines, Indian Summer owner Georgia Eccles-Schoeman, Andrea Desmond-Smith of The Blue Lion Gallery at Artemis, and not forgetting Aunty Mary Arendse who runs Mary’s Kitchen and famous throughout the valley for her delicious vetkoek. These are just a handful of the inspiring women who have made a difference in our close knit community. Read more about some of Franschhoek’s influential women on our blog (www.franschhoek.org.za) this month. The valley has played host to the first Franschhoek Mystery Weekend of 2019 and we look forward to more of the same in August and September. To find out more, contact mysteryweekend@franschhoek.org.za. Save the date for the popular Franschhoek Uncorked Festival taking place the weekend of 14 and 15 September. Fine Yarns in Franschhoek The Little Shop Around the Corner is about to open on Bordeaux Street. The Shop will cater to the needs of knitters and crocheters of all levels.

Patricia Eccles from Peacock Blue is the moving force behind the venture. She has always loved fine yarns and handwork. ”There is a plethora of amazing yarns in South Africa,” says Patricia, “Particularly Alpaca, from animals reared locally, Mohair from the Karoo and Merino, which is usually sent to Italy and China.” Her aim is to stock local yarns and to provide knitting lessons with afternoon tea. Patricia was inspired to open the Little Shop by a recent trip to Amsterdam. Whilst there she discovered and was intrigued by a knitting shop that seemed very popular with locals and tourists alike. Globally there is a resurrection of knitting – sales of yarn have doubled and doubled again over the last few years. Initially, knitting was the prerogative of the hipster, who would knit in the pubs, bars and coffee shops, on subways or tubes in cities like New York or London. But it is rapidly returning to the mainstream. Craft magazines in the UK are full of knitting patterns and ideas, and there is a rise in its coverage in the more mainstream glossy magazines. In the age of online everything, knitting offers a way to reconnect with the real physical world and each other. It can be argued that knitting lowers stress levels in a similar way to mindfulness. Major designers like Vivienne Westwood are putting knitwear and crochet back into their collections. The Little Shop Around the Corner will also pay homage to Patricia’s late mother Lucy, who was an expert knitter specializing in Fairisle and hand embroidered finishes. People often remarked she had the most beautiful hands. Contact 021 300 5868 1A Bordeaux Street Franschhoek

ON OUR RADAR

TO BELONG Marie Stander is best known as a figurative artist, working in a variety of media, although specialising in charcoal. Her inspiration comes from the people that she knows, loves and cares for – mainly members of the community in Jamestown, near Stellenbosch where she lives with her family. She speaks with warmth about the community, and says that with all their triumphs and tribulations, they form a great source of inspiration for my work, which she captures in realism. We feel that Marie Stander and her art are an icon for Womens’ Month. www.manzart.com

Breakfast, Brunch & Banter at Bistro BonBon

FAREWELL “WHITE ZULU” Johnny Clegg – the legend, the icon, the man who transcended boundaries and gave South African’s the “spirit of the great heart”. We salute you. Your music lives on. 7 June 1953 – 16 July 2019

Franschhoek wines and Cape flavours served in a rustic space, infused with traditional elements. Bistro BonBon provides a cosy, comforting setting for breakfast on a cold Franschhoek morning, as well as the perfect vantage point to watch the sun bathe La Petite Dauphine estate’s manicured gardens and orchards in silvery winter light. It’s also pet-friendly so outings can include the four-legged family members. This is truly a magical location with a warm, country vibe that makes guests feel right at home. Think … breakfast buffet table groaning with cheese, charcuterie, pastries, breads, fresh cut fruit, cereals, and yoghurt, and a menu with a kalaeidescopic offering of warm breakfast dishes, including that ultimate, loving ode to cholesterol, the English breakfast (eggs, pork sausage, crispy bacon, sautéed mushrooms, seeded toast, potato rosti, and sweet tomato relish).

VALLEY OF LIFE

Whether guests like their eggs fried, scrambled, Florentined or benedicted, Bistro BonBon knows how to do breakfast!

Val de Vie’s signature red blend, launched during the 2018 Harvest Season, has been named after the estate’s rich history and entrenchment in the Valley’s culture of fine food and wine.

But it’s not only breakfast Bistro BonBon has earned a widespread reputation for. Located on the breathtakingly beautiful La Petite Dauphine Estate on Franschhoek’s Excelsior Road, this charming, pet-friendly restaurant with its rustic, country interior and views of dewy gardens, orchards, and mist-swathed mountains, does lunch and dinner too. Scottish Chef Archie Maclean is the creative driving force behind the menu, which takes full advantage of the Franschhoek Valley’s rich fruit basket of fresh produce. The warm and welcoming Dominique Maclean is Chef Archie’s wife and Bistro BonBon’s front of house manager. Lunches and dinners are typically taken in The Studio of Bistro BonBon, a converted fruit packing shed with oodles of naked wood and natural textures giving it that beguiling, rustic feel and paintings from local artists adding pops of colour.

CAVALLI ESTATE
