Happiness in Waves with Jeremy Loops
Jeremy Loops fans need to prick up those ears, as we have some great news! This SA music legend is making his way to our valley on 2 September to perform live at Franschhoek Cellar. It’s no secret that South Africans love a hero and Jeremy Loops is our ultimate ambassador. From cult live-act status in his hometown Cape Town, to topping charts and touring internationally, this man and his music have become the soundtrack to many a feel-good memory for us all. It was only after two years of travelling the world after college, that latecomer to music Loops, became committed to pursuing a career in music. Not just an incredible musician, Loops is also co-founder of tree planting organisation Greenpop, and he uses his platform to shine the spotlight on our mother city with ambitions of helping bring South African music to the world. In a career characterised by breaking through glass ceilings, 2015 saw Jeremy opening for Twenty One Pilots, headline a sold out 30,000-ticket tour of his own, and release his most notable single Down South – breaking through in major European territories and elsewhere around the world.

His new album Critical as Water is a tribute to his love of the ocean. Led by the acclaimed single Waves, this album sets out to make some waves of its own. “My music’s always really been a time capsule of what I was going through when I wrote it. I just remember spending every second I could get in the ocean over the last 18 months. At first I thought I was just running away from the pressure of making this album, but the water and surfing helped me focus and relax; and only once I began making time to be back out there did writing the music start becoming more natural.” Selling out shows is what Loops specializes in and if ever there was a time to drink wine and listen to sweet melodies it is now! Perfection is Now Available in Limited Quantities From their award-winning stable of hand-crafted, world-class beers, The Franschhoek Beer Co. has created a very special treat for beer connoisseurs.
A limited-edition stout, aged for six months in ex-Shiraz French oak barrels, has been released in beautiful champagne bottles, paying homage to the special content. Olaf Morgenroth, brewmaster at The Franschhoek Beer Co., excitedly mentions a complex oaky and woody taste with a slight Shiraz character and subtle notes of chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Only available to purchase at The Franschhoek Beer Co. Brewery in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley at R275, it certainly makes for a very unique gift. It’s perfect for ageing, so if you are lucky enough to lay your hands on more than one … buy one to enjoy now and one to savour later! For additional information visit www.franschhoekbeerco.co.za
Sushi Fix at FoSho
The newest addition to the Franschhoek restaurant scene is FoSho Sushi. After two years in the making, Franschhoek can finally add a great sushi place to its already impressive list of culinary offerings. FoSho is the first of its kind in Franschhoek and has filled a much needed gap in the local foodie scene. Owner TC Fourie had a vision to open a sushi joint in Franschhoek. After sampling all the fine dining that Franschhoek has to offer, he was surprised to find himself craving a California Roll. To his amazement, there were no sushi restaurants in Franschhoek. In the restaurant mecca of the Western Cape (if not South Africa), there was no Sushi restaurant? Challenge accepted! TC decided he would open a high-quality sushi restaurant and take-away which will be affordable and appealing to both locals and tourists visiting Franschhoek. His mission was to make great sushi at good value for money while not compromising on taste, experience or freshness. “I believe we are in a great position to add value in Franschhoek, we get fresh fish on a daily basis. Our experienced chefs will ensure that you always enjoy your sushi at FoSho.” Our three main values are: quality, quality and quality! We only serve the freshest salmon, prawns and tuna and focus on presentation, portion size and taste. Sushi is after all our ART! Would you guys like some Sushi? Yeh, FoSho! Nature’s Bounty at Café BonBon
Over the past year Café BonBon has started a food garden under the guidance of Chef Grant Greg Lynott. The intention is to teach the kitchen team about the concept of “provenance”, a word often bandied about in restaurant culture these days. Chef Grant says, “Our new food garden is a labour of love, learning and hope! We started with a few small beds and gradually, through trial and error, grew the garden to a size that will provide a good chunk of our daily vegetable needs and give us the freedom to try new ways of filling in the narrative of “farm to fork” with more understanding.” “While we certainly aren’t experts”, he continues, “we have many amazing heirloom varieties growing and are learning to be better chefs/farmers every step of the way. Café BonBon’s new summer menu, launching in September, will reflect the diversity of their garden and the connection between them and other chefs in the valley. Chef Grant invites you to come and taste the produce of their garden in their beautiful surroundings. www.lapetite.co.za/cafe-bonbon

Secret Season Indulgence at the Terra del Capo Antipasti Bar
FOOD & DRINK
CAP
CLASSIQUE
High Tea
A carefully curated menu of quintessential Italian dishes is available at the Terra del Capo Antipasti Bar – situated at the Anthonij Rupert estate in Franschhoek – this winter. Signature favourites from previous menus include the crisp, fried Calamari (with a zesty new parsley and lemon pesto twist), and crunchy Whitebait with tangy aioli. Regular guests will be thrilled to know that Chef HW Pieterse’s hearty, homemade Salsiccia sausages also make a comeback on the new menu – accompanied by ‘Cannellini al Fiasco’ – a traditional Italian bean stew. Chef HW and his team continue to celebrate local ingredients during the winter months, with the introduction of a Baby Vegetable Crudité, using vegetables grown in the L’Ormarins gardens and served with garlicky anchoïade, and fresh Ceviche prepared from local Franschhoek Trout, dressed with honey, lime and ginger. While local produce remains the focus, some ingredients are uncompromisingly sourced from Italy for their superb quality: Genuine Italian artichokes, truffles and Taleggio cheese are amongst the exquisite imported produce this season. A mini lasagne is also on the winter menu this year! Although not strictly Antipasti, this dish pairs perfectly with the estate’s Terra del Capo Sangiovese, and Chef HW couldn’t resist adding it to the offering. The Terra del Capo Antipasti Bar is open from Tuesday to Sunday (lunches only) and, as the estate operates on a ‘by-appointment-only’ basis, pre-booking is essential. Guided by executive director Elana Brundyn and her team they endeavour to create high-quality exhibitions and public programming. Norval Foundation also hosts the Gerard Sekoto Foundation and The Homestead Art Collection – a curatorial asset and one of the leading collections of 20th-century South African art. The Skotnes Restaurant and Bar, named after legendary South African artist and teacher Cecil Skotnes, boasts a menu that pays homage to classical South African cuisine, while updating its flavours and distilling its ingredients to their simplest presentation. At the helm of the restaurant is Executive Chef Phil de Villiers, who previously led Primal Eatery (named Eat Outs Best Steakhouse of 2017). The Sculpture Garden features an ongoing exhibition of threedimensional and installation-based artworks by artists from South Africa and Africa. The unique site, bisected by a protected Cape Lowland Freshwater Wetland and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Western Cape, features flora that are indigenous to the area. Annunciation, Gary Stephen’s new series of botanical portraits, continues his exploration of urban African style. His new works focus on braided hair and headscarves whilst placing the models in idyllic botanical settings, an evolution from earlier urban contexts and cityscapes. The subjects are now set amongst the beauty of the natural world; a cascade of moon flowers, a cluster of plumeria blossoms, or in front of a tropical palm. He draws from an angle behind the model choosing to focus on the iconic beauty of their hair or scarf instead of a specific face or identity. In historical European religious art, an Annunciation painting depicts the appearance of an angel bearing a stem of white lilies in his hand. The lily announces the miraculous news of the arrival of a child to the Virgin Mother. Stephens reinterprets the “annunciation” from its original religious context and shifts to a broader spiritualsymbolism of a lily that represents purity and the arrival of good news. His lily has become a symbol of spring, a positive new season or a fresh beginning. The Annunciation drawings honor the stylish young Africans in Johannesburg who wear traditional fashions with a certain urban flair. Joburg streets come alive on Heritage Daywith more and more people celebrating the beauty of their cultural traditional dress. An eloquent example was when female students from the “Fees Must Fall” free education marches chose to wear traditional headscarves as a powerful symbol of their African female solidarity. The drawings are done in charcoal and washes of ground chalk pastel with water. Typical of much of his previous work, some drawings and linoleum prints are folded and have string systems installed in front of the image. The pleated surfaces and strings interact to give an optical vibration and sense of movement to the images. Their monumental scale, attention to detail, and strong light make scarves and braids into iconic symbols of everyday African beauty. SAMUEL ALLERTON Samuel’s works invariably all show a blatant reference to nature. Whether it is through his subject matter, textures, colors or merely a title of a work, his major influences are deeply rooted in nature. The elements, the extremes, the contrasts, diversity and original creativity that millions of years of existence have sculpted around us – this is where Sam draws much of his inspiration from. Samuel’s sculptures show his fascination with the solidity and presence of old weathered rocks and wood which have changed over time. Monoliths that have stood the test of time, showing their history in layered, worn scars. Samuel’s works deal with seemingly simple universal issues which are multilayered. Mark making, his combinations and juxtapositions of both weathered organic and clearly man made textures all come together to create works which are contemporary and timeless. In the simplicity and solidity Samuel’s sculptures deal with age old fundamental universal questions. It is however in his mark-making, his layered combining of organic and man-made textures that he shows that the seemingly simple universal questions are in fact multi-layered and exceptionally intricate.

Hwange Against All Odds Hwange National Park in the north-western corner of Zimbabwe is considered one of Africa’s great parks. It is home to some of southern Africa’s last great elephant, buffalo and sable herds and plays an integral role in a network of southern African conservation areas. Wilderness Safaris now offers travellers a unique opportunity to get up close with the community and conservation work taking place in this great park. “Wilderness Safaris is dedicated to conserving and restoring Africa’s wilderness and wildlife through high-end ecotourism. Our model is responsible and sustainable, changes people’s perspectives on the planet, and inspires those exposed to it to effect positive change in their own lives and own spheres of influence”, says CEO Keith Vincent. “Our journeys truly do change lives – not only those of our staff and community partners, but also our guests and the thousands of people we reach every year. By ensuring that our guests Travel with Purpose, we hope to continue building sustainable conservation economies in Africa and make the biggest positive difference to its wildlife and people, both now and into the future”, he continues. Wilderness Safaris’ next Travel with Purpose itinerary, Hwange Against All Odds, takes place 13-18 September 2018. Six guests will get the unique opportunity to travel to Wilderness’ private concessions in Hwange National Park to take part in the behind-the-scenes conservation and community initiatives that Wilderness has been involved in for more than 20 years. www.franschhoeklife.co.za
TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE WITH WILDERNESS SAFARIS
“Since 2000, Wilderness has invested in conservation initiatives in the Park’s south-eastern corner, such as daily provision of water for thirsty wildlife, firebreak maintenance, supporting the anti-poaching units and being part of a variety of research projects. Our continued presence in Hwange has had an important conservation impact on its wildlife populations and we are looking forward to sharing its wonders with like-minded guests who realise the importance of travelling with purpose”, says Wilderness Safaris Zambezi Environmental Manager, Arnold Tshipa, one of the hosts of this itinerary. Other experienced experts who will lead this journey include Children in the Wilderness Community Liaison, Mxolisi Sibanda, and Wilderness Safaris’ legendary game water supply manager, Willem Botha, affectionately known as “Mr B”. Together with Arnold, they will offer guests the opportunity to experience a unique behind-the-scenes safari, including interacting with the Scorpion Anti-Poaching Unit – an extraordinary group of rangers who work in partnership with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management (ZPWMA) to protect the area’s diverse fauna and flora. In addition, guests will join the unit in a snare sweep activity supervised by experts in the field, participate in a game count, and help to collar an elephant. They will meet and engage with members of the neighbouring communities, visit a Children in the Wilderness Eco-Club and learn about other upliftment projects and initiatives.
“What makes this journey even more significant is the fact that all proceeds will go to the Scorpion Anti-Poaching Unit which has removed some 2 500 snares and reduced the levels of poaching within the boundary areas of Hwange. This experience will not only make a difference to the ongoing biodiversity of the Park but will contribute to the empowerment of local people at the same time”, adds Arnold. “Our unwavering commitment to driving authentic and sustainable ecotourism in Hwange is as strong today as it was 20 years ago. We look forward to continuing to lead the way and to showcase our conservation and community highlights to our guests”, Arnold concludes. TRAVEL
Country Charm
De Zeekoe Guest Farm is a short drive outside Oudtshoorn. This farm takes its name from the hippopotami that used to inhabit the Kammanassie and Groblaars Rivers in centuries past. Today the reeds that cover the riverbanks provide shelter for smaller species, including no fewer than 168 bird species. The 3000 ha property is home to a few springbok in addition to the bonsmara cattle and sheep that are farmed. Alfalfa is grown on irrigated fields. Bicycles and kayaks are available for rent for the energetic, while the less energetic may choose to while away their day poolside or at the spa. A memorable activity offered is a pre-dawn meerkat tour with Meerkat Adventures. The tour starts with warming coffee and rusks before a short hike to the burrows, with a background talk along the way. Before the first rays of the sun touch the burrows everybody is comfortably installed on a camp chair with a blanket to keep out the chill. With a little luck it’s not long before the first meerkat peeks out a burrow to get a whiff of the morning and decide if it’s warm enough to venture outside. The rest of the family follows in fits and starts – even meerkat families seem to have late sleepers! They line up on an elevated spot to enjoy the early sun and once they’re all toasty saunter off for the day’s hunt – their dark upright tails being the last that the human visitors will see of them. Kobus se Gat is another wonderful Klein Karoo experience. The Lategan family constructed their restaurant at the foot of the Swartberge and prepare much of their fare in
Cape Country Routes is a grouping of independent hotels and country inns with members from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. Franschhoek Life visited some of their members in the Klein Karoo. the traditional way – over open fires. Pay attention to the suspended stone chimney over the central hearth – rural ingenuity at its best! Expect Karoo Lamb, ostrich sosatie, bucket list-worthy roosterkoek (griddle cakes) and country hospitality. If you’re looking for things to do, ask them about their tours of the area – especially of the historic Swartberg Pass with its sweeping views and rock formations. The engineering is impressive too. If you’re brave you can cycle down the Swartberg Pass.
Barrydale, with its collection of zany eateries and shops along the R62.
Africa’s largest cave system, the Cango Caves, is only a few kilometres from Kobus se Gat, so be sure to also include this natural wonder in your itinerary.
Housed in several period properties with courtyards, pools and gardens in between the hotel gives few clues to its generous size and amenities. The hotel spa offers various rejuvenating treatments, including baths in the restorative mineral water that first brought fame to Montagu. The elegant, candle-lit dining room offers traditional South African and continental dishes – all to the soothing sounds of a baby grand piano.
Being ostrich country no visit to the Klein Karoo would be complete without a visit to an ostrich farm. The tractor and walking tour at Safari Ostrich Farm is packed with insight into these birds. Did you know that there are several species of ostrich in Africa, or that the natural colour of their leather is light grey? I didn’t. Of course you do know that they don’t really stick their heads in the sand when scared… The farm’s restaurant naturally has ostrich on the menu, which is good, as you can’t have too much of this cholesterol-free red meat – especially with Safari’s secret apricot mustard sauce. All things ostrich are sold at the well-stocked shop, from wallets to feather dusters. Heading back west the R62 passes through beautiful countryside and the historic villages of Calitzdorp (SA’s Port Capital), Ladismith (a major apricot producing area) and
The next village, Montagu, is a great base from where to explore everything the Breede River Valley has to offer. Wineries, adventure activities and things historic abound. The Montagu Country Hotel is an Art Deco treasure house lovingly furnished by hotelier Gert Lubbe. On entering one half expects a flapper to descend the staircase with an exotic cocktail in her hand and a come-hither grin on her face.
American Dream Cars, Gert’s other venture, offers bespoke tours in two grand American dames; a 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Sedan de Ville and a1956 De Soto Fireflight Pillarless S24 Sportsman two-door coupé. Both will make you feel like royalty when you tour nearby wineries and towns. The Cape Country Routes pamphlet invites travellers to ‘Explore our beautiful region and beyond’. We recommend you do so. “Mile after magnificent mile…” www.capecountryroutes.com Franschhoek Life stayed courtesy of Cape Country Routes

The ideal climate

The L’Huguenot Venue and Vinoteque is home to the exclusive Val de Vie and Polo Club ranges.
