FOOD & DRINK
Allesverloren: For the Love of Wine The Swartland was traditionally known as the breadbasket of the Cape, with wheat being the major crop. In recent years this region has also become internationally renowned for its innovative wines. The Mediterranean climate not only means that the vineyards covering the slopes in the region flourish, but also creates the perfect growing conditions for olives. The picturesque Riebeek valley in the Swartland is home to Allesverloren, one of the oldest wine estates in the region. With a history dating back to the early eighteenth century, the estate has been in the Malan family since 1872 and has been handed down from father to son through the years. Current owner and cellar master, Danie Malan, is the fifth generation Malan on the estate. Here, the estate’s vineyards creep up the imposing Kasteelberg while the meso-climate in the region provides the ideal conditions for creating big, robust red wines. The stony soils against these slopes play a crucial part to the particular character of Allesverloren wines, resulting in deeply coloured, powerful wines with an excellent concentration of fruit. The estate is renowned for its Portuguese varietals, fortified wines and full-bodied reds, made in the traditional Old-World style. The classic Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are wines with depth, character and ageing potential that are sure to impress any discerning wine lover. The fortified wines produced on Allesverloren, especially the estate’s flagship Fine Old Vintage, has been a firm favourite for decades. The estate has also recently expanded their range to include a Tinta Rosé and Chenin Blanc – the perfect wines to cool down with on a sweltering Swartland summer’s day. Visit Allesverloren – Travel to the heart of the Riebeek Valley and experience true Swartland hospitality at Allesverloren. Join us for a day of wine tasting, splendid views, and a meal with family and friends at our restaurant, the Pleasant Pheasant. Our rich history and picturesque setting will have you enthralled. The annual Riebeek Valley Olive Festival is the perfect reason to visit this beautiful region. Allesverloren, along with seven other venues in the Valley, will once again open their doors to visitors on 4 and 5 May 2019 to celebrate the olive harvest. Come and enjoy an abundance of Allesverloren wine, olive products, good food and live music! Visit www.riebeekvalleyolivefestival.co.za for more information.

Andrea Bocelli – South African Tour
One of the world’s biggest classical legends Andrea Bocelli, will be playing to two sold out concerts in South Africa where he will be performing with a full 140-piece symphony orchestra and choir! In Johannesburg, he will perform with the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg and in Cape Town with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir at Val de Vie Estate, where the polo field will be enfolded by three awe-inspiring mountain ranges, acting as the natural open-air amphitheatre for the first ever concert of Andrea Bocelli in the Western Cape. Set against a symphony of sunset colours, attendees of the exclusive event can expect a unique experience in one of the most beautiful settings in Africa. The concert will be split into 2 parts. For the first part, fans will get to experience Andrea Bocelli perform some of the most famous opera arias. The second part will be dedicated to his most popular hit and crossover songs for a once in a lifetime evening. Matteo Bocelli will also be joining his father to perform the duet ‘Fall On Me’. Bocelli’s humble manner belies his international status as one of the world’s biggest classical stars – he’s sung for Popes, Presidents and royalty, performed in all the greatest concert halls and opera houses around the world, and sold 85 million records. He has performed at major international events including the Olympic Games and the World Cup, as well as his own sell-out arena shows. He has a Golden Globe, 7 Classical BRITs and 7 World Music Awards under his belt, plus a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Andrea Bocelli has recorded 15 solo studio albums of both pop and classical music, three greatest hits albums and nine complete opera. For his latest release ‘Si’, Andrea Bocelli has teamed up with some of the hottest musical stars on the planet – reuniting with his friend Ed Sheeran after their chart-topping ‘Perfect Symphony’ on a brand new song called ‘Amo Soltanto Te’ (written by Ed with lyrics by Tiziano Ferro) and joining with pop sensation Dua Lipa on the single ‘If Only’. Crossover superstar Josh Groban and classical soprano Aida Garifullina also duet with Bocelli on the record. It is his first album of new material in 14 years – 16 brand new songs which celebrate love, family, faith and hope. At the centre of the new record is a spine-tingling duet between father-and-son, as 20 year-old Matteo Bocelli steps into the limelight to duet with Andrea on ‘Fall On Me’ – a beautifully poignant song which reflects the bond between parent and child. Andrea explains how his voice compares with Matteo’s: “Technically they are very different, but there is one thing that makes them most similar: the attitude. That characteristic way of expressing yourself through your voice. This makes Matteo and I very similar. But that is something that you cannot learn, that cannot be taught. That is something you are born with.” Get Andrea Bocelli’s much anticipated new album “Si” here: https:// umgafrica.lnk.to/AndreaBSDeluxe www.andreabocelli.com www.franschhoeklife.co.za

Two Solo Exhibitions at The Gallery @ Grande Provence CULTURE CLUB – AN EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISJAN ROSSOUW & PFAFFISMS 2019 AN EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY STEEL SCULPTURE BY UWE PFAFF
Uwe Pfaff was born in 1947 and grew up in Germany. After emigrating to South Africa in 1970, he took evening classes at the Ruth Prowse School of Art and Design, studying etching and sculpture. A number of exhibitions followed and both an etching and a sculpture were selected for the prestigious Cape Town Biennale in 1982. ‘Pfaffisms 2019’ is a personal interrogation of the artist’s interior and exterior world through sculpture. ‘Just like everybody else I ask, where do I come from, what the hell am I doing here and where am I going to. Is there life after death? Is there life before life and the killer: is there life after birth?’ All of this relates to the concept of time – time is relative, like the action of an accordion. Creating spaces and sounds of life with the spirals pushing and pulling the bodies at the end or the beginning always regaining its original position which somehow feels right even though something has been altered. Rossouw is a self-taught photographer from Cape Town with no formal training. ‘Culture Club’ explores the idea of identity in colour and light. Continuing with his signature approach to lighting, Krisjan illuminates his subjects in alternative hues and colours, elevating them to an unnaturally saturated level. He proposes a play on African Pop Art with tribal paint and initiation clay captured in the endless colour spectrum. Rossouw examines the relationship between photographer and subject and emphasizes the dialogue between them. The exhibition will conclude 31/03/2019. .- .-. - ... / --- -.- (ART’S OK) BY LIBERTY BATTSON The title of this exhibition is written in Morse code, as the artist explores, with typical wit and percipience, the common belief that contemporary art is a cryptogram with the decoding key jealously guarded by “those in the know”. Inspired by statements like, “I don’t get conceptual art”, “it goes right over my head” and I’m not artsy”, she shows that art is a language with a vocabulary and grammar but one that we all can learn. In this small, lush and very sensual exhibition, Battson again shows what a fine artist she is and offers a master class in aesthetics which, paradoxically, is accessible to all. Autumn Décor Trends & Ideas
INTERIOR & LIFESTYLE
Top tips to add warmth and coziness to your home and interiors as the seasons. COLOURING Let your surroundings inspire. Think rich ambers, deep reds, velvety greens and the patina of worn wood. A richer interior will set a warmer tone. Visualize the rich autumnal palette, the smell of oranges, mulled wine & the warmth that an open fire creates. LAYER UP Swap the cotton/linen throw on your bed for fur & velvetsomething luxurious to the touch, think beautiful fake fur and velvet. Drape armchairs with extra throws. FABRICS & SCATTERS Play with different fabrics and textures. Use linen or cotton on your seating areas, juxtapose with scatters in rich velvets and darker muted tones. ACCENTS Copper and antique brass are big in the décor scene. The colour and patina reflect a warmness reminiscent of sunshine. Add these elements in the form of candlesticks and small occasional tables. TABLE SETTINGS Relaxed summer settings give way to layered dinner tables and comfort food. Light candles in groupings and add accents in rich reds and antique brass with glassware, cutlery and linen. LIGHT THINGS UP! Few things play better on our senses than a lit fireplace; the smell & sight; the feel & sound … Add logs to wicker baskets or stack in a niche. Fragranced candles with spicier undertones. Group together on your coffee or dining table or in glass vases for a striking and welcoming effect. Above all, experiment…be daring and add your own stamp of style to your special space! “The best rooms have something to say about the people that live in them” – David Hicks, International Interior Designer. TRAVEL
Wilderness Diaries Part 1
– LOSE YOURSELF AT CHITABE – OKAVANGO DELTA
Our adventure started the minute we took off from Maun in the Cessna operated by Wilderness Air. From our aerial vantage point we could glimpse the vastness of this diverse terrain but nothing would prepare us for the magnificent experience ahead.
Arriving at Chitabe Camp is like attending a family reunion with only your favourite family members, such is the warm welcome received upon arrival here. Situated in a private concession on an island in the south-east of the Okavango Delta, Chitabe is set among a breath-taking mosaic of wooded, wetland and grassland habitats. Covering 22 000 hectares of pristine wilderness and situated between 2 major river systems – the Gomoti and the Santantadibe – the area is famed for its incredible numbers and diversity of wildlife, particularly predators.
Luxury is the key thread throughout the Wilderness Safari experience. At Chitabe your accommodation is a spacious Meru-style tent built on an elevated wooden deck amongst the trees with en-suite facilities and an indoor and outdoor shower. Here time stands still and yet goes so quickly. The ultimate ‘new luxury’ of having no Wi-Fi connectivity, no doubt, playing its part in this altered experience of time.
From the moment our Wilderness Air plane touched down, we were on the hunt for a leopard that had been ‘spotted’ a few hours before in the area. As we landed, the legendary OB (immediately re-christened Obi-Wan Kenobi), was waiting to welcome us. OB was our guide and wildlife mentor and guru during our Chitabe stay. While self-drive may have merits, exploring this rich territory with a knowledgeable and experienced guide has some serious benefits. Bird life is abundant with over 400 recorded species. OB’s knowledge of all creatures great and small, left us in awe. Baboons come to provide a show at the pool while guests can cool off during the heat of the day.
We discovered the ‘elephants’ playground’ – water and mud baths in excess lay scattered throughout the area at this time of year, ensuring both the pachyderms and the visitors were entertained for hours. We found the angriest hippo in the Delta. Bathing alone, with a huge gash on his back from a previous fight with another hippo, he clearly did not like the idea of being stared at. Note to self: It’s not a brilliant idea to watch a charging hippo through binoculars … a genuine 4D experience!
Leaving Chitabe one leaves behind a piece of your soul, but in return you have gained so much more. The people of Botswana are surely among the friendliest in the world, from the moment you step foot in this magical country you are greeted with an ever-present smile. And it’s with a smile that you’ll think back on your experience and plan your next visit. Founded in Botswana in 1983, Wilderness Safaris is widely acclaimed as the continent’s foremost ecotourism operator, dedicated to conserving and restoring Africa’s wilderness and wildlife. Creating life-changing journeys in some of the most remote and pristine areas in Africa while helping to conserve Africa’s spectacular biodiversity and share ecotourism’s benefits with the communities that live alongside.
