The Épice of Life

There’s a new kid on the block in the fine dining capital of Franschhoek: Introducing Epice – (derived from the French word Épice meaning spice) is an intimate fine dining restaurant and the latest venture from the team behind La Colombe, La Petite Colombe, Foxcroft and Protégé.

Scot Kirton, chef proprietor of the La Colombe Group of restaurants, is leading this new venture together with James Gaag, La Colombe’s executive chef.

Heading up the kitchen is head chef Charné Sampson who is no stranger to refined, cutting-edge cuisine – until recently she was sous chef at La Colombe and is another one of Scot’s protégés to spread her wings. A graduate of Silwood, Charné also honed her craft in the kitchens of The Restaurant at Waterkloof, Myoga and The Test Kitchen.

Charné’s cooking is a marriage of spice and flavour with an emphasis on sustainable ingredients. Diners can expect dishes such as: Tuna, mango, avocado, mustard, cumin; Quail, prawn, yoghurt, ginger, masala; Grass fed beef, carrot, spinach, nutmeg, pepper; Welsh rarebit, brioche, pear, grape, mustard, cumin and many surprises along the way… the ‘Old School” ice-cream trolley housing an array of palate cleansers is a delight!

Dishes are enjoyed in the plush, amber interior, designed by Megan Bond and Rotem Shachar. Watch this space as the duo is also the force behind Protogé and the upcoming La Petite Colombe, opening at Leeu Estates in May 2020.

La Petite Ferme presses pause on the onset of cooler days that March has in store for us.

This next quarter brings the promise of one of the most beautiful seasons in the valley and also, executive chef Kyle Norris and his team’s latest triumph – La Petite Ferme’s Autumn 2020 menu is ready to tantalize!

Starters to make you swoon include: Wild Coast Fish Cakes; Goats Cheese Vetkoek; Foie Gras; La Petite Salad with pickled sultanas, roast pear and gorgonzola and Soupe de la Semaine (soup of the week). The main dishes emphasise favourites such as: Springbok Shanks; Aged Beef Fillet; Seared Trout and as always the much loved Heritage Lamb will be a feature.

Vegetarians and Vegans will fall in love with the Wild Mushroom Arancini – bettered by only using plant-based products. This vibrant dish boats pure home-made vegetable stock, foraged wild mushrooms, organically grown apples and garden-fresh cauliflowers, finished off perfectly with an added dash of international flair – slices of black truffle from Italy.

CHIAROSCURO BY CORLIE DE KOCK This exhibition focuses on the art of drawing and specifically of the South African landscape and of female portraits. Corlie de Kock delivers an interpretation of landscape and portraiture in her drawings that could be termed “ecofeminist”.

In this exhibition drawing is emphasised as an autonomous language. Chiaroscuro is a Renaissance technique, where the contrast between light and dark evokes a dramatic atmosphere in visual images.

De Kock uses charcoal to create her drawings then erases and re-draws them. Charcoal is thus the metaphor for temporality and drawing symbolizes a dynamic and ever-changing process. These drawings focus the attention on technical ability and the link between the passing of time and value.

Ecofeminism uses the concept of gender to explore the issue of the abuse of power over nature and women and is an underlying theme of this exhibition. The women in De Kock’s portraits are from the African continent, but stand their ground in the world- symbolised by the map on the wall or an ornamental globe within her indoor space. Art generates art and De Kock's female portraits relate to that of seventeenth-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, as she emphasizes the moment of a woman's realization of her own independence.

De Kock creates a set of larger than life portraits in which the female model is the focal point. Maps and tapestries of maps make up the background.

Indigenous plant species were analysed and documented by means of drawings during the colonial era.

The possession and exploitation of nature over the past three centuries has led to an ecological disaster.

South Africa is a country that suffers from recurring droughts and water shortages which leaves people in a constant battle for survival. De Kock refers to this but also gives a positive and romantic perspective amidst the dark, oppressive conditions.

The artist also refers to indigenous plant species such as Ghoena Figs(Carpobrotus edulis (L.) L. Bolus traditionally used by the Koi-koi as a medicinal plant) ,Proteas and the Blushing Bride (Serruria Florida Blushing Bride is related to the Protea species and one of the most sought after bridal flowers).

The essential sense of the exhibition is expressed in the contrast between light and dark, growth and destruction, nature and culture. The continuous use of the technique and medium of chiaroscuro emphasises and symbolizes the incompleteness of human existence.

This exhibition celebrates his sixth solo exhibition and his second with AITY Gallery. The work shown in this collection is a culmination of his past decade’s worth of experiences, positive and negative, professional and personal. Solomon endeavours to portray the past to keep the future relevant.

Never one to shy away from depicting elements of pain, confusion, memorising ability connects the viewer with the emotions portrayed in each piece and arouses similar emotions to his or her own journey. disappointment and sometimes deep sadness in his works, the cross is a metaphor for the heavy weight of social commentary in a world With an honours diploma in Graphic Design from Birmingham greatly motivated by aesthetics. FOR ART’S SAKE – GROUND WORK Grappling with the emotional tensions and complexities of human relationships, sculptor Dylan Lewis’s latest exhibition, Chthonios, features striking visceral works with a markedly different energy than previously seen. The new monumental animalistic sculptures – where male and female figures appear to emerge from animal limbs – serve to emphasise the balancing act of the three psychic agents (ego, id, and superego) in order to move beyond repressed traumas. Taking up the #SpekboomChallenge, Val de Vie Estate has planted an additional 3 000 spekbooms – and is calling on its residents to join the national drive.
