ART & LIFESTYLE
Open for Viewing and More!
The Rupert Museum is opening its doors on the 4th of September and we could not be happier! An array of carefully curated exhibitions will be on show as well as the ever popular Museum Saturdays returning on the 26th of September for a celebration of art, culture, music and food for the whole family. On show in Gallery 4, till 29 August 2021 Nature Morte – The Still from Life
The installation is open for viewing specifically to serve as inspiration to artists who would like to be included in a group exhibition.
Continuing the exploration of genre themed exhibitions inspired by the Rupert Museum’s permanent collections, Nature Morte is the second in the series, following on the much appreciated show – Faces & Figures.
The response exhibition is set to be mounted at the Jan Rupert Art Centre, Graaff-Reinet during the first quarter of 2021. Further details and announcements will follow soon. www.rupertmuseum.org
At its core the various still life and interior scenes in the mediums of drawing, painting, print, sculpture and ceramics portray South African stylistic movements by prominent 20th and 21st century artists. These include Irma Stern, Jean Welz, Cecil Higgs, Alexis Preller, Erik Laubser, Christo Coetzee, Penny Siopis, Karel Nel, John Newdigate and Hennie Meyer. The exhibition sheds light on the genre’s reference to the transience of life and socio-political grappling; as well as its historical tradition by featuring Flemish art from the Michaelis Collection of Iziko SA National Gallery. The formal qualities of which is undoubtedly evident as a golden thread through the show. A photographical component of food and still photography by local photographers Claire Gunn, Michelle Parkin and Nadine Greeff feeds inspiration or reaction to this tradition in our contemporary world. Open Call to Artists in Gallery 3 till 31 October 2020, celebrating spring with the monumental artwork, Colour Symphony by Michele Nigrini. This popular piece exploring colour theory, features 395 panels of mesmerising colour inspired by botanical forms.
Hand-crafted by Boschendal
Brace yourself for the new retail space on Boschendal Estate, open to guests from Friday 4th September. This is the perfect marriage of delectable foodie goods and a range of new and bespoke items made exclusively for the store, including their very first homeware collection that has been carefully curated by an expert team. The range features some favourite pieces for the home, inspired by Boschendal’s signature contemporary farm style. Sourced mostly from South African workshops, the homeware range is defined by its integrity and functional, contemporary design. The quality organically grown produce, in-house artisan bakery, fresh organic butchers and a broad range of new foodie treats made on the estate, have a prominent place in the new space. As always, community is at the heart of the operation at Boschendal and much time and attention has been invested to seek out and support small, artisan suppliers who pride themselves on creating quality products that are respectful to the environment.
The unique array of products include, wood ware that has been handmade on the farm or crafted in an artisanal studio in Woodstock from oak and South African olive wood. Good, old fashioned baskets weaved in Paarl using time-honoured techniques. Artisanal textiles, woven on old fashioned looms, by Barrydale Hand Weavers in the Klein Karoo. The napkins & tablecloths by Angela Swain with her meticulous attention to detail, are works of art. So too, are the 100% cotton and linen aprons, tea towels
and oven mitts made by Chile Co. Handmade and perfectly imperfect, Di Marshall’s Wonki Ware ceramics are sought-after around the world as is the Storm in a Teacup range by Sue Weston and her team of ceramicists. You will also find a wide variety of indigenous plant species from South Africa’s natural and diverse landscape, begging to be taken home. Boschendal has truly created a one-stop destination showcasing all that is good about life!
An Artist in Residence – NYIKA (ALEX) ZINHANGA’S STORY
Franschhoek based impressionist painter Robert Grogan wasn’t looking for a multiyear mentoring project when he first visited Franschhoek several years ago. He had heard about “Alex,” a local security guard hailing from Zimbabwe, who spent much of each day sitting under the shade of an umbrella and sketching and drawing while working as a security guard for Grande Provence, he decided to show him his outdoor painting gear. Alex had never actually seen an oil painting of any kind, his immense enthusiasm convinced Robert to mentor this talented young man. They would often paint together on Alex’s day off mostly with Robert providing photos to be used as reference for his drawings which were then shown and sold by a local art gallery. In 2006 Robert was selected to be the artist-in-residence at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming, USA and suggested to the museum that, during his tenure they might want to exhibit some of Alex’s wildlife drawings. The exhibit included biographical details and a map of southern Africa showing where Alex lives and works. The popular exhibit was seen by thousands of people including British wildlife artist David Sheppard. Since then, Alex has evolved as a painter and he enjoys support and encouragement by many other Franschhoek residents who have helped with this endeavor. The initial meeting with Robert was the beginning of a long friendship and much work on the part of mentor and protege alike. Alex now works as a restaurant supervisor at Grande Provence and his works are available to view and purchase at the newly launched Heritage Garden Deli on the estate. He remains committed to living his life as an artist, and his motto is, “Drawing is my passion; painting is my dream.” To find out more about his work contact alexzinhanga@gmail.com or 073 017 8514 www.franschhoeklife.co.za

Located in the charming hamlet of Simondium just outside Franschhoek, Plaisir de Merle is known to celebrate their rich history and unique terroir and has been crafting fine wine in the area for close to 300 years. As one of the first farms to start cultivating vines in this prestigious growing region, Plaisir de Merle consistently excelled throughout the years as a producer through the keen interest of many generations of committed guardians. The Griffin, a prevailing symbol of the estate, represents the foresight and bravery of these men and women who have built the farm to what it is today. Modern-day Plaisir de Merle encapsulates two of the original Drakenstein farms, making it not only one of the oldest but one of the largest in the area, spanning over 1000ha, with 350ha planted to vine. The wine is a nod of honour to France, crafted by using only the noblest of grapes. The range consists of elegant classics like Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Surrounded by mountains and vineyards that add to the farm’s palpably countryside feel, the vast beauty is a must-see for

The Entrée menu fuses the variety and creative flair of a set menu whilst still offering you all the choice and affordabilty of an al la carte experience”. General Manager, Dominique Maclean is equally excited about their new venture; “Our team has followed us to a new and beautiful setting, the history and old-world charm of the restaurant building, with copper pipe accents on the interiors’ exposed brick walls, high wooden volted ceilings and a giant indoor fireplace that makes you feel welcome as soon as you enter!
