JOBURG SPOTLIGHT
Moët & Chandon Golden Tree Brings Festive Glamour to the City of Gold
This holiday season, Moët & Chandon brings its legendary savoir-fête to South Africa – an exciting new chapter in the House’s long history of generosity.
For at the heart of festive celebration is one champagne, Moët & Chandon, the very symbol of the House’s renowned fêtes. Effervescence is a distinctive feature of the delicate blend that Benoît Gouez, Cellar Master of Moët & Chandon, creates. And it’s the effervescence of his champagnes that forms the golden thread of global Moët & Chandon celebrations this festive season. This year, Moët & Chandon is sharing the joy of togetherness with a host of festive experiences around the world by inviting Friends of the House to join bespoke fêtes, from musical performances to events in “eternal effervescence” spaces. Moët & Chandon will flow in over 20 cities including Sydney, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, London, Milan, Madrid, Amsterdam, Moscow, New York, Paris and Mexico City.
Dinners To Die For
Not your usual ‘dinner and a show’ experience, Dinners To Die For pride themselves in creating immersive, murder mystery events where guests are as much part of the show as the actors themselves! Founded and run by professional actors, Danielle and Rowan Studti, the show unfolds before you as an unexpected murder takes place. Shortly after, the detective arrives to close off the crime scene and start questioning the suspects. With a variety of scripts and storylines to choose from, the classic ‘who dunnit’ narrative is played out in what can essentially be described as a skilfully constructed event of live, role-playing Cluedo. Professional actors set the scene, and the attendees of the event act as the detectives and help catch the killer. The backdrop for all of this murder mystery mayhem can range from the 1920’s New York, to a Miami Vice-type crime scene. Founded in the Mother City, Dinners To Die For is now coming to Johannesburg. Events can take place anywhere from your home, to a restaurant or hotel. The Rand Club and Casa TosCana are some of the venues in the Johannesburg area that are already teaming up with Dinners To Die For. A talented group of up and coming Johannesburg based actors will also be joining the team. Whether you are wanting to plan a memorable party for an upcoming milestone, celebrate your child’s birthday, or are looking for an ideal team-building experience, Dinners To Die For has a variety of context and age appropriate options to choose from. What’s more, they offer both in-person and online events, and take as much pride, care and craft into their online events as their live ones. For more information about upcoming events in the Johannesburg area or to book a private event, go to www.dinnerstodiefor.com or email info@dinnerstodiefor@gmail.com
Here in South Africa, a Moët & Chandon Golden Tree will be revealed in the City of Gold, to open Gauteng’s festive season in champagne style. The spectacular Moët & Chandon Golden Tree is set to become an iconic festive symbol, finding its home in Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square until the 3rd of January 2022.

Guests are invited to enjoy Moët & Chandon at several outlets on Nelson Mandela Square throughout the festive season; booking will be essential.

Making Crocheting Mainstream
The word crochet is likely to conjure images of your grandmother’s doilies. However, two young entrepreneurs in Newtown, Johannesburg are setting the record straight. The strength of Mama Kea lies in its combination of young and old talent. It started when the founders, Sicelo Mabuza and his business partner Khulani Sikhosana, teamed up with two elderly women, Irene Mabitsela and Emma Mavimbela, who they met selling crochet beanies at the Soweto Arts and Craft Fair back in 2015. “We wanted to match their intricate hand-stitching techniques with our own creative business ideas. As young people, we knew how to promote and market the right product.” Their sandals, loafers, low and high tops (with soles made from recycled rubber tires); beanies, and bucket hats are all inspired by Africa’s cultures, nature’s organic colours, the beige and fawn of the Khoisan, and the red, green, and yellow of the Pan Africanist movement. “The shoes are our star product,” enthuses Sicelo. “We start the shoe from the ground, using patterns that define our art as Africans.” Threads of nylon and acrylic are then stitched using calculations so precise they become a distinct fabric and pattern. Customers appreciate the craft and are proud that it’s an African product. Currently, Mama Kea purchases the soles ready-made, but they hope to manufacture their own in the very near future. “Before we can parade our products at any more fashion shows, we need to honour our commitment to remain proudly South African” says Sicelo.
With Thanks from Truffles
It is their ingenuity, determination and drive that has earned Mama Kea a nomination in the Small Business Spotlight support initiative by Lulalend and CapeTownMagazine. So, what does the future hold for them? They have a shrewd plan for the long-term: Before lockdown, Sicelo and his core staff had trained over 20 youngsters for production so that they’re ready to scale up as required. From this also sprung a formalised curriculum. This is the framework the duo believes will catapult them and their brand to excellence. www.facebook.com/Mama-Kea Creations-341523926203278/
Truffles will be closed for the season from the 20th of December 2021 and re-open again on the 07th of January 2022. We are in gratitude for your support. Your feedback and kind words are what have fuelled us. We will welcome you with a shared optimism for many years ahead. Join us in the Park for romance and ethereal love In 2022 and beyond. Newly Launched Wine Range, Vineyard Friends – ALL ABOUT FARMING SIDE BY SIDE WITH NATURE
Newly launched wine brand, Vineyard Friends connects the wine drinker with the natural wildlife and sustainable practices that underpin its winemaking principles. The new range, which includes four wines; Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Merlot Malbec, is vegan friendly and 100% GMO free. Vineyard Friends is dedicated to the unique animals of the Cape Winelands that make the precious vineyards their home: the Grey Duiker, the Cape Grey Mongoose, the Bat Eared Fox and the Grey Heron. Each animal plays an integral role in the lifecycle of the vineyard, from maintaining soil health to removing pests. This not only ensures a healthy harvest but limits the need for pesticides. And it’s not just these incredible cape creatures who are doing their part to create a more sustainable option for South African wine drinkers. Vineyard Friends is also the culmination of two decades of practical response to environmental challenges and the result of a myriad of sustainable practices.

After all, sustainable winemaking is a team effort. It’s about maintaining the delicate balance between flora, fauna

The vineyards themselves make use of water saving cover crops while facilities make use of bio-treated grey water in all ablutions and gardens – drastically reducing the use of potable water. Additionally an anaerobic process sees clean water released into the local municipality, to support the community. With 50 million precious litres of irrigation water reclaimed per year to provide the vineyards with the water they require to thrive. The Vineyard Friends cellar in Wellington has the largest solar photovoltaic energy installation of any wine production facility in South Africa. An 801 kW roof array of 2400 panels not only offsets 1265 tonnes of potential CO2 emissions, but also produces clean, surplus energy to be fed into the grid of the neighbouring town and its communities. Partners and suppliers are chosen very carefully – only working with those who share a commitment to honouring nature and biodiversity through sustainable and ethical practices. Even the Vineyard Friends bottle itself has recycled glass content, is lightweight and includes a label on 100% recycled paper from Enviro LabelTM. Despite all of these interventions, the creators of Vineyard Friends know that the journey to sustainability never ends and that the environmental impact of winemaking still remains. That is why a community-led bamboo growing carbon reduction project runs in parallel with the work in the vineyards, the production facilities and on the bottle itself. It is also why there is a continuous commitment to
Celebrate Life’s Everyday Joys with La Motte’s New Vin de Joie Rosé
La Motte has introduced a new addition to its well-known portfolio of wines – a Frenchstyle rosé called Vin de Joie. The 2021 La Motte Vin de Joie Rosé is an elegant choice that promises to bring joy. Whether your special time is social or simple – with loved ones around a table or a solitary hour with a book – enjoy them with an elegant glassful of La Motte’s dry and delicate Vin de Joie Rosé! While the inspiration and the style of the La Motte Rosé honours the estate’s French winemaking heritage, the grapes for the wine are a true celebration of South African terroir and its diversity – in more ways than one. Promising to be the perfect glassful for everyday celebrations, the joy in the name and on the label was inspired by one of the true joys of biodiversity of the Cape Winelands – the Blushing Bride. A blend of 71% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, the 2021 La Motte Vin de Joie Rosé offers a delicate salmon pink with a tinge of onion skin, typical of a Mediterraneanstyle rosé. The nose offers subtle, but well-defined melon, rose petal and nectarine with the charming notes of Turkish delight in the background. The palate is juicy on entry, with a refreshing acidity and lovely lingering nectarine on the aftertaste. Polished and perfect for relaxed get-togethers and lengthy lunches, this refined Rosé is a delightful glass on its own and a versatile choice with food. Enjoy with the simplicity of leafy salads and Mediterranean plates, finely sliced Charcuterie and seafood in all shapes – from summertime sushi to comforting soups in winter. Available at La Motte or la-motte.com at R99.

With a primary objective to create and sustain a strong national base of top quality chefs, bakers, wine stewards and concierges. In every true sense of the phrase a programme of recognition and rewarding excellence. The hotel industry offers superb opportunities for ongoing education and ultimately career growth. Although a competition that provides glitz and glamour, the true role is serious and deep-rooted providing a vehicle and a public platform that creates an environment of mentorship for the country’s hospitality industry. With the increasing unemployment crisis we are facing in South Africa, it is more important than ever before to offer opportunities to young South Africans. The Distell Inter-Hotel Challenge places a strong emphasis on facilitating a platform that allows the industry to join forces to change the lives of young talent across the country. Indulgence, Pampering & Pleasure – WELCOME TO OTIUM SM BY SILVERSEA CRUISES
Silversea Cruises, pioneers in luxury cruising will unveil their wellness programme OtiumSM on board the brand new Silver Dawn from March 2022. In a nod to the cruise line’s Italian heritage, Otium takes inspiration from the leisurely nature of the ancient Roman lifestyle. In Roman culture, Otium – the opposite of negotium, the non-existence of pleasure – was a time dedicated to leisure, in which people bathed, conversed, sung, theorised, drank, ate but most importantly, relaxed. Completely diverging from the new age of wellness programmes, Otium encourages balanced indulgence. From your luxurious, comfortable base at sea the focus is on pampering and pleasure over sacrifice and delayed gratification. Built and designed on principals that wellness should be a natural, highly enjoyable focus of the day, especially while on vacation, Silversea have recognised that living well and being well are not mutually exclusive and that wellness need not be a solitary or silent experience, rather a social pursuit best enjoyed with others, yet in the very exclusive environment found on board these small, luxurious ships. OtiumSM will transform the way guests relax and enjoy their personal space. An elevation of the already high levels of comfort, it will provide a customised, multi-dimensional wellness journey throughout the Silver Dawn, starting in

The much anticipated NorvalXBoschendal art collaboration is also open to the public from the 3rd of December daily. This creative celebration of South African art and artists is a first of its kind and opens with a selection of local artists including Zanele Muholi and sculptures by Kyle Morland and Edoardo Villa. The exhibitions will rotate and many more exciting talks and tours are being planned to celebrate this artistic endeavour in the Cape Winelands. Entrance is complimentary and the exhibitions are within and around the renovated Boschendal Manor House. The festive season is a treat on the farm this year and you are invited to come and explore and discover more – from culinary delights to creative pursuits.
The menu consists of over-the-top, classic retro-revival and nostalgic plates designed for sharing. On certain days of the week, Zioux will also feature elaborate brunches and high teas. Booking for Zioux is essential and a strict dress-code will apply. No under 25s.
