The Absa Top 10 Pinotage Awards is an annual competition held to celebrate the premium Pinotage wines of South Africa. The competition was launched in 1997 with the intent to improve the quality of

All events that are remembered and preserved in some authentic form constitute the historical record of an event. The history of Pinotage cannot be told without mentioning its lineage of pioneers the likes of Abraham Izak Perold, CT de Waal, Duimpie Bayly, Beyers Truter. History will always matter – it is how legends are born. 25 years ago, the Pinotage Association launched the Absa Top 10 Pinotage awards. Driving excellence and quality by creating awareness, researching, and changing perceptions of Pinotage. “For Pinotage to be excellent, it requires this attention to detail. Pinotage takes longer to master than any other varietal and it needs meticulous planning. When you get it right though, it’s exceptionally versatile,” says Beyers Truter, Chairman of the Pinotage Association.
Stylistically, Pinotage has elicited strikingly different opinions and preferences, embracing different styles. This year the Absa Top 10 finalists reflect this – with Stellenbosch flaunting-6, Durbanville-3, Swartland-3, Voor-Paardeberg-2, Paarl-2, with Tulbagh, Wellington, Bottelary areas also being represented in the line-up. The 2022 Judging panel comprised of Samarie Smith, Fred Viljoen, Solly Monyamane, Etienne Louw and Jacques Steyn. The Pinotage Association congratulates all the 2022 finalists.

Dusk in Stellenbosch, is a new thought-provoking restaurant concept conceived by internationally awarded chef duo, Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin. Dismantling old conventions, Dusk is a space where the boundaries of fine dining are constantly challenged. The restaurant ambience, itself is dark and mysterious. One enters the dining room, through a dimly-lit corridor which opens into an intimate dining room set against the backdrop of an open kitchen. The only lighting is hung directly over the tables to emphasise the food and wine placed in front of you. The menu consists of four major pillars that define the ethos at Dusk: Produce, Time, People and Perfection.
That is one of the reasons why Dusk solely offers dinner service. Dusk is changing the way the restaurant industry operates, putting their staff at the front of the cause.
With a fascination for fermentation inspired by recent trips to Europe, the duo harness the power of time in their experimentation with all kinds of fermentation and ageing processes. An array of lacto-fermented ingredients, garums, shoyus, pickles, vinegars, misos, cured meats, home-made cheeses and even their own wine and alcoholic concoctions are featured. The ever-changing and evolving menu has experimentation and discovery at the heart of every dish. The most integral pillar is “People”. Not only the guests, but the individuals who contribute their time and effort towards manifesting Dusk’s vision.
Finally, Dusk is deeply rooted in Perfection and attention to detail. Callan and Darren are committed to learning from each other, their team, their experiences, and from their guests in order to incorporate their combined knowledge into the search for the elusive perfect meal. By the time guests leave, they will have formed an integral part of a culinary revolution which begins, but by no means concludes, at Dusk.
At Dusk We Dine
Over the last six months, Callan and Darren have explored the countryside in search of the most unique ingredients, developing a tight network of local sustainable suppliers. They have unearthed some fascinating indigenous ingredients such as Kalahari truffles, wild pigs, and a variety of medicinal plants. The highest quality produce, farmed through ethical techniques and harvested at the height of their season, prevails at Dusk. Produce is placed on a pedestal, as Dusk aims to incorporate each supplier’s story.
Darren knows only too well the toll that the conventional model of employment can take. The duo have been doing research on mental health for the past eight months now and have developed a mental health program for the restaurant group.
