Gogos and Mkhulus of Noma Day Care Centre were treated like royalty when the International Day of Older Persons was celebrated on Sunday, 01 October. The day was observed IRU WKH ÂżUVW WLPH WKURXJKRXW WKH ZRUOG LQ WR UHĂ€HFW RQ WKH challenges faced by old people and to promote the development of a society for all ages. Recent time has shown how old people tend to be forgotten or mistreated in society. But, with old age homes such as Noma Day Care Centre, one is assured that senior citizens are well taken care of. It’s important to remind the community of the VDFULÂżFHV WKH HOGHUO\ KDYH PDGH DQG WKH ORYH DQG FDUH WKH\ KDYH given throughout their lives. This year’s proceedings were held under the theme; ‘Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.’ Founder and Director Nomalanga Mogomotsi, 65, was excited with WKH YLVLWV RI 0LQLVWHU LQ WKH 3UHVLGHQF\ -Hႇ 5DGHEH 0LQLVWHU RI Department of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini and Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza. “What I’m doing now, is for all those vulnerable elderly persons. Others don’t have children and others get dumped to these places. I had to open an ROG DJH KRPH WR RႇHU VXSSRUW DQG WDNH FDUH RI WKHP 6KH SOHDGHG with the public and private sector to assist with funding [money] or donations (mattresss, wheelchair, or a motor vehicle which will assist WKHP ZLWK WUDQVSRUWLQJ WKH HOGHUO\ IURP WR KRVSLWDO 7KH QRQ SURÂżW organisation operates from two centres, one in Zone 4 caring for 42 older persons and the other in Zone 16 accommodating 76. And older persons who now call the centre ‘home’ were pampered with gifts, entertainment, food and drinks as well as motivation. Koko Sarah Phiri (110) held the bragging rights of being the oldest at the event. Her, together with Koko Christinah Kgoabane (100) were DZDUGHG FHQWHQDU\ FHUWLÂżFDWHV DSSUHFLDWLQJ DQG UHFRJQLVLQJ WKH

He strongly condemned the abuse done on the elderly. “We must continue to value and respect our senior citizens. They remain the treasure trove of our society. “The elderly must always feel free and safe to be among us. I challenge each and everyone of you to think about older citizens that you will give care and love to,â€? said Radebe. The celebrations of the elderly coincided with the launch of the Social Development month. All this will be done as part of government’s initiative to restore the dignity of our people throughout the month of October and beyond,â€? said Minister Dlamini. A music band of people with disabilities from Itireleng School of the Blind where all members are blind or partially blind entertained the crowd with their music. They had the crowd on their feet and band member Alfred Bokaba says they play jazz most of the time and occasionally get to play at weddings. “If anyone is looking for a band for their wedding or event they should call us,â€? Bokaba said jokingly. James Matlatsi who stays at the centre said he was happy and thanked the Ministers for taking time to see them. “May God bless you and continue with the great work you do.,â€? said Matlatsi. Vote of thanks was done by Ward 30 councillor Jabulani Rammushi. “Councillors are there to assist the community. I thank all the dignitaries, South African Police Services and board members of Noma and the VVIPs which are the senior citizens,â€? said Rammushi.
