ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE

SATI SF Y YOUR KU R I OS-I T Y. A CABINET OF CURIOSITIES OPENS AT NORTHSHORE HAMILTON.

Crane your necks, drop your jaws and prepare to suspend your belief when Cirque du Soleil swings, soars and somersaults back into Brisbane in January 2020. The Canada-based circus company will erect its Grand Chapiteau at Northshore Hamilton once again as it brings KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities to the city for the first time. The month-long season marks a return to Northshore for the global juggernaut which has previously staged blockbusting productions Totem (2015), OVO (2012) and Dralion (2008) at the picturesque riverfront location. The genre-defining circus company told REALM that Northshore Hamilton is the perfect location for Cirque du Soleil as it sits on the gorgeous Brisbane River, is close to the city, offers visitors and VIPs plenty of parking and provides the company with ample space to set up and operate each large-scale show. Residents and audience members expecting to see the company’s distinctive yellow-and-blue striped Grand Chapiteau take shape along the river are in for a surprise with KURIOS premiering under a brand-new white-and-grey big top. In another first, Cirque du Soleil presents a welcoming act on top of the Grand Chapiteau before the show starts. When weather permits, three artists climb up the duo-toned tent and, framed by the Brisbane

River, greet the guests from above while playing music and acting to give them a taste of the KURIOS experience before the show even begins. KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities is Cirque du Soleil’s 35th production since 1984 and the 12th to tour Australia; eight of which have played under the iconic Grand Chapiteau. Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS is set in the latter half of the nineteenth century and spins a tale of time grinding to a complete stop, transporting the audience to a fantasy world where everything is possible. In an alternate yet familiar past, a scientist (The Seeker) is convinced a hidden world exists – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. Out of his Cabinet of Curiosities steps a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class gymnasts, acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns, actors and musicians. Together, they turn The Seeker’s steampunk world upsidedown as they are guided by an energetic gypsy jazz, electro swing soundtrack.

CURIOUS ABOUT KURIOUS?

KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities plays under the Grand Chapiteau at Northshore Hamilton from 10 January – 9 February 2020.

The KURIOS site at Northshore Hamilton will take six days to set up – including erecting the Grand Chapiteau, entrance tent, artistic tents, box office, administrative offices, and a kitchen and dining area for cast and crew – and two days to remove.

150 local staff will be employed to help build the site.

KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities has a cast of 46 artists from 16 different countries.

More than a hundred costumes were created to dress the cast of KURIOS.

There are 426 props in the show, the most of any production in Cirque du Soleil’s history.

Nico the Accordian Man’s costume allows him to bend very low or stand straight up and it took the costume-maker an entire week to craft, sewing from inside the costume.

Each performer applies their own make-up for every show, taking between 40 minutes to two hours each.

KURIOS runs for 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 30-minute intermission.

Tickets: cirquedusoleil.com/kurios or 1800 036 685.

GALLIVANT THROUGH ASCOT AND HAMILTON HERITAGE TRAIL

S T ROLL T HROUG H S UB U RBAN HISTO RY. DISCOVER THE SURPRISING STORIES BEHIND HAMILTON AND ASCOT’S MOST RECOGNISABLE LANDMARKS.

Today it’s a major thoroughfare carrying commuters bustling about their day, but did you know Kingsford Smith Drive was once a convict hewn track leading to the jailbirds of Eagle Farm Women’s Prison? The Gallivant Through Ascot and Hamilton Heritage Trail brings local history to life, allowing residents and visitors to envisage what once stood and admire what still beautifully stands in the area. Beginning on Kingsford Smith Drive, a 3.5km trail travels past 18 landmarks as it guides visitors up Racecourse Road to Windermere and Lancaster Roads. The trail then crosses into Yabba Street and ends at the entrance to the renowned Eagle Farm Racecourse. First stop is Hamilton Hotel, built in 1865 as a meeting place for Brisbane’s horse racing society, a reputation it holds to this day. Wander 2km to Schneider Road to see the site where Eagle Farm Women’s Prison once stood. The important archaeological site was home to some of Australia’s first English convicts. On Racecourse Road’s verdant grounds is St Augustine's Anglican Church. Built in 1920, the grandiose war memorial was nicknamed the "Jewel Box", because of its vibrant stainedglass windows commemorating both world wars. G R E AT GARDENING TIPS F O R A PART MENT OWNERS. LET YOUR BALCONY BLOOM THIS SPRING.

When it comes to apartment living, sometimes the dream of having a luscious garden can seem impossible and out of reach. Limited outdoor space is a common issue for apartment dwellers but with these savvy gardening tips from Tom and Carolynn Brooks, owners of The Small Garden in Brisbane, your apartment can be transformed into a patch of paradise.

REALM | 16

FEATURE

V ER TICAL GA R DE NS Fantastic for providing privacy and adding a splash of colour, vertical gardens have exploded on to the scene. Perennial vines such as climbing hydrangea and wisteria are an ideal choice to fill in the gaps while delivering fragrant flowers and envious shade. For those seeking an extra element of privacy, create a barrier by using plants such as tall grasses and hedges. Ready-made vertical kits, frames and pots are available from hardware or garden stores. POTTE D P L A NT S Incorporating a large plant can create the illusion of space. Large pots are difficult to move once they have been planted, so place them on wheels to make life easier. Typically, most plants flourish in direct sunshine so place them near a window or alternatively, choose ones such as the snake plant or zanzibar gem that can survive low light environments. TIP: “In small spaces, avoid clutter by choosing a large potted plant over a number of small plants as this will enhance the sense of space,” Tom says.

S U CCU L E NT BOW L The popularity of succulent bowls has skyrocketed in recent years and it’s easy to see why. Fun to create, versatile and eye-catching, these contemporary arrangements are a stylish and individual way to inject greenery without taking up too much space. To create a succulent bowl, cover drainage holes with netting and fill the bowl with potting mix. Next, pick a colourful and large succulent for the centrepiece and set in place. Lastly, plant the edges of the bowl with a mixture of succulents for texture and colour. The root systems of succulents provide great moisture so be careful not to overwater as it will lead to rotting. TIP: “Grasses, cactus, succulents and natives are all hardy species that will thrive in the exposed conditions,” Carolynn recommends.

HE RB GARDE N There’s nothing worse than spending a fortune on expensive herbs at the supermarket. For inexpensive fresh herbs all year round, a herb garden is a simple way to keep ingredients on hand. For first time gardeners, mint, chives and oregano are among the easiest herbs to grow. Keep in mind that light and ventilation are imperative to successfully growing herbs indoors, so find a window position. If counter space is limited, try hanging your herb garden in front of a window.
