AUTUMN2018

Cova neighbourhood news The Gold Coast has been an absolute hive of activity already this year. The mammoth lead up and excitement of hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games was amazing and saw the city come alive more than ever. Even though the closing ceremony has sadly come to an end for another four years, here at Cova we will still relish in the fact that one of our very own residents, Patrick Fairon, was selected to be part of history by being one of the Queen’s Baton holders. You can read all about him in this issue. Also in this newsletter we feature Roya Alizadeh our Live Life Get Active trainer who shares her tips on staying motivated during the cooler months. I always welcome feedback, if you would like to be featured in this newsletter or have any suggestions on what you would like to see please drop me a line at communityqld@frasersproperty.com.au.

Cova Annual Easter Egg Hunt The kids of Cova enjoyed a fun-filled morning of hunting for hundreds of Easter eggs hidden all around the Recreational Club. There were loads of very happy faces leaving with all of their chocolate goodies which was wonderful to see. Thanks everyone for coming along.
Meet your neighbour: Patrick Fairon Patrick Fairon was shocked when he received the news that he would become one of the 2018 Queen Baton Relay holders for the recent Commonwealth Games. The RSL Gold Coast District President was nominated by a fellow RSL member and thought he had no chance of being selected but was absolutely thrilled when he was told. “It is a great honour and I respect very much that honour. I feel I represented all RSL Volunteers who go about their good work for Veterans and the ex-Service Community through the services offered by the RSLs,” he said. Patrick was conscripted into the Australian Army in 1966 where he served with the Royal Australian Artillery, 106 Fl. Battery, 4th Regiment. In 1967 he was deployed to the Vietnam War for operational service, with his unit returning in 1968. He has held the role of RSL Gold Coast District President since 2015, a voluntary position that covers from Beenleigh down to Tweed Heads and Coolangatta, totalling 10 Sub Branches all up. While Patrick represents these Sub Branches at State Level as a District President, he has been involved with the RSL for over 16 years since retiring down at the Gold Coast. Patrick and his wife of 52 years Barbara have been living at Cova for almost three years. They love the streetscapes and the friendly neighbourhood. They’re avid fans of the recreation pool and gym so are excited about the Cova Boathouse completion early next year. When asked how our residents can get behind the amazing work that the RSLs do, Patrick said that the RSL QLD website is the best place
“The whole experience was wonderful, in my run section there were large numbers of enthusiastic people in carnival mode, and it was a great and humbling experience” Patrick said.
to find local Sub Branches and their calendar of activities. Buying badges and donations for poppies at shopping centres in the lead up to ANZAC day, Remembrance Day and purchasing RSL Art Union tickets are another way to support our veterans. Visit rslqld.org for more information.
Get to know Roya Alizadeh, your Live Life Get Active trainer Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into personal training. I come from a background playing high level competitive tennis and became a personal trainer because I always wanted to work in an occupation that made a difference to the lives of others. After high school I went on to further pursue my passion for health and fitness. I have been working in the fitness industry since 2009 and I graduated with a certificate 3 and 4 in health and fitness. What is the most rewarding part of being our resident Live Life Get Active trainer? The most rewarding aspect is definitely helping members to achieve a healthier and fitter lifestyle in a positive way. I enjoy transforming people’s lives for the better by helping them accomplish their health and fitness goals. What are your tips for staying motivated during the cooler months? Maintaining fitness is just as important in the cooler months as it is during summer, so I suggest following some creative tips to keep you motivated until the sun starts shining again: 1. Setting S.M.A.R.T goals (both short term and long term) will help you achieve success by keeping motivated
and focused. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely - all of which are important in reaching a fitness objective. 2. Establishing a consistent exercise schedule should keep you on track to staying committed to working out on a weekly basis. 3. Tracking workouts through an activity tracker app or a fitness watch is a great way to chart your progress over time. Seeing improvement can help boost motivation and encouragement to stick at it. 4. Training with a friend will help you commit to a training session, and hold you accountable for showing up. Buddying up with a friend will help change your perspective of working out to something a little more enjoyable and sociable. Favourite healthy snacks? I enjoy eating a variety of healthy snacks to meet my energy and nutritional needs. My favourite snacks to curb my appetite are sundried tomato and olives, raw nuts, and Greek yoghurt with two servings of fruits.
