Martial Arts - Jiu Jitsu

The Fraser Rec Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is a 12-week program of Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals, a great place to learn the basics. Our professors are Brazilian Black Belts and have extensive coaching experience, are certified and have won numerous tournaments at all levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-jitsu is one of two martial arts that are defensive (the other being Aikido). There is no striking and the main goal in jiu-jitsu is to level the field by taking the opponent to the ground to get a submission. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is one of the most effective self-defense martial arts, where real life self-defense situations are explored at the beginning of every class. As a sport, jiu-jitsu has a point system for certain moves and advancements as you progressive towards a submission. Jiu-Jitsu is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. The fee includes your Gi. Upon registration you will be sent the Gi sizing chart and you may notify us of the size you would need. CLIMBING

Climbing Wall Skills Check and Belay

Certification at the Grand Park Community Recreation Center is for experienced climbers who have already mastered the skills involved in top rope climbing. Certifications are a pass/fail test. After passing the test climbers will receive their belay certification. Once certified, climbers may use the autobelays and topropes when the recreation center is open and no climbing programs are scheduled. Functional Movement Screen

The Functional Movement Screen is an assessment to document movement patterns that are key to normal function. Assessing these patterns, the FMS identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness. The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns. The FMS score is used to track progress and identify exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength. Please contact our Fitness Supervisor: John Florkiewicz, john@fraservalleyrec.org for more information and to schedule an appointment.

Yoga for Every Body:

In this class we will blend traditional Hatha and Vinyasa yoga. Yoga is for every type of body and every person who has the desire to connect their physical body and spirit through movement and deep stretching. We will explore slow flow and the twists and turns of yoga in relation to life and our personal intentions. As we move through Vinyasa flow, continuous movements will help you stretch each muscle and strengthen it simultaneously. This increases your range of motion as well as mobility. We will sync our breathing with our movements, bringing fresh oxygen to fuel and loosen up all muscles. When the muscles are flexed, the stress is released and reduced from the ligaments, joints, and tendons. This prevents injuries, tears, and muscle pulls. This is an inclusive yoga class and I encourage all levels to join. When on our mats, we are all yogis, finding the spaces between our asanas. Props will be used to deepen our practice and for gentle modifications.

Yoga Fusion:

Yoga Fusion blends traditional yoga postures with other low impact exercises such as Pilates and toning. This class will work towards improving balance, strength, and flexibility. It is a dynamic class which allows time for stillness, breathing, body awareness and hands on adjustments from the instructor. Props such as blocks, blankets, bolsters and straps are available to support and enhance the poses. All levels welcome as modifications are given as needed.

Winter Conditioning:

This class utilizes metabolic resistance training to burn calories, build muscle and elevate metabolism. The format is a timed set circuit which will include kettle bells, sandbags, training ropes, medicine balls, physioballs and body weight exercises. Water bottle and towel are recommended.
