In His Steps: Surrendered Service

Dr. Chris Montgomery | Aug. 25, 2024

(1 Corinthians 12:12-14) For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many.

• Prayer: A call to pray is a call to care.

• Presence: God has called me to be intentionally present with my brothers and sisters in Christ.

• Gifts: A call to reflect God’s radically generous heart.

1. I am created to serve others.

(1Peter 4:10) Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

(Ephesians 2:10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

(Philippians 2:3-4) Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interest, but also for the interest of others.

2. I am equipped to serve others.

(1 Corinthians 7:7) But each of you has your own gift from God…

(1 Corinthians 12:4-5) There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.

3. I belong to serve others.

(Romans 7:4) In the same way, my brothers and sisters, your old selves died, and you became free from the law through the body of Christ. This happened so that you might belong to someone else – the one who was raised from the dead – and so that we might be used in service to God.

4. Jesus is my ultimate example for how to serve.

(John 17:4) I glorified you on earth by completing down to the last detail what you assigned me to do.
