‘More of Jesus, Less of me’: Sharing Frazer’s Vision for 2013 Staff Reports To start off the new year, Senior Minister Tim Thompson shared his vision for Frazer for 2013, and his heart and desire for every member of the congregation to discover the life that God designed for them to have. The four essential pieces to becoming a C-4 church, and having a transformed life, lie in God’s Word, Community, Mission and Worship. He shared his vision with the congregation on Sundays, Jan. 6 and 13. “Every morning, I say the same prayer: Lord, today let there be more of Jesus and less of me,” he said. “I believe with every fabric of my soul, that if I can get that right, then I can begin to discover the abundant life found in Jesus. Only in Him will we find the life for which we are created, the life God intends for us to have.” If we want to be better parents, spouses, children, employees, neighbors and friends, then we have to have more of Christ in our lives, and less of ourselves. Therein lies the problem: ourselves. Oftentimes, we like to blame others for our struggles, but most of the time, we are the problem.

Senior Minister Tim Thompson shared his vision for Frazer in 2013 with the Wesley Hall congregation Sunday, Jan. 13. He shared the same message of becoming a “C-4 church” through creating compelling connections with Christ with the Sanctuary congregation on Sunday, Jan. 6.

“We keep getting in the way,” Tim said. “How do we get ourselves out of the way to find the life God designed for us?”

The Frazer congregation gave more than $63,000 in a special offering collected for Transformation Montgomery on Christmas Eve.

By Amy Presley News Editor

The Frazer family once again felt God nudging at their hearts to give to those in need through a special Christmas Eve offering for the Transformation Montgomery project. Between the two Christmas Eve candlelight worship services, the congregation gave nearly $63,000 specifically to help with renovation costs for

a recently purchased commercial building at the entrance of the Garden Square neighborhood. Frazer closed on the property on Dec. 13, and will soon begin the process of restoring the building and turning it into a “Transformation Center” that will provide a base from which to serve the entire neighborhood in life-changing ways. Classrooms for after-school programs for

school-age children and adult education opportunities, meeting spaces for small groups, Bible studies and mentoring sessions are just a small part of the vision we have for this space and how it can help change lives and build strong families within this community. As of the end of December, three of the homes purchased by Frazer are occupied with renters and a fourth will be ready for occupants after some minor repairs. Continued page 5

2013 Vision continued from page 1 In Acts chapter two, we learn that the Holy Spirit was doing miraculous things within the hearts of the people of the early church. They felt a compelling connection to Christ, a longing to seek Him, and through that connection, their lives were transformed. And by partnering with God, they created compelling connections with others, a community where believers could learn, grow and do life together. “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.” Acts 2: 42-47 (NLT) “There was an amazing explosion of the love of Jesus in their souls. They went from one day being in the way to being all about Jesus the next,” Tim explained. So where do we begin the process of moving ourselves out of the way, and allowing God to do His transforming work within our lives? Tim said there are four, non-negotiable components to creating those compelling connections with Christ.. 1. Every Member in the Word of God “We can’t have a compelling connection with Christ without knowing and studying His Word,” Tim said. Verse 42 describes how the believers devoted themselves to the teachings of the apostles. “Is the Bible the Word of God, or is it not?” Tim asked. “My desire is that every member will be in the Word, every day.

Frazer Family News Not to be religious, not out of duty, but so that your life can be transformed.”

2. Every Member in Community Nearly 70 percent of the Frazer congregation is not plugged into a small group, Sunday School class, or other discipleship community. Tim said that the leadership at Frazer is working hard to develop a plan to help everyone find a small group where they can be discipled, and as they grow in their walk with Christ, be surrounded by the support and encouragement of others on the same path. “We cannot do this without community,” he said. “People are desperate for connection and community. God created us this way.” People are seeking a place to belong but the hope is that Frazer can help fill that longing and desire to be a part of something so that people can make compelling connections to Christ through community.

3. Every Member in Mission The early church were missionaries. They stepped out of their homes and went out in to the world to be the hands and feet of Jesus. “We feel most alive when we are helping someone else. God created us that way,” Tim said. Frazer’s legacy is that of a church where you’ll find “Every Member in Ministry” but we should also expand that outside the walls of the church, so that “Every Member is a Missionary.” “The mission field is right outside the doors of the church- your home, your school, your work place, your neighborhood, the ball field,” Tim said.

Moving forward, Frazer wants to also be known as a church whose members take the love and hope of Christ beyond the walls of the church and into our city, state, country and the world. God may not necessarily call every person to be a missionary overseas but He does call every single person to be a missionary where they are. Being a missionary can

be as simple as just being involved in the lives of those you care about and showing them Christ’s love. “Every single one of us is a missionary,” he said. “The church of America today has no future if all we do is stay inside these walls. We have to take the church and God’s word outside these walls.”

4. Every Member in Worship If we want to maintain a compelling connection with Jesus, that requires worshipping God. Tim said, “That ought to be a no-brainer but why, on any given Sunday, are 60 percent of members not in worship?” What message does that send to the unchurched? How can we proclaim the message of Jesus Christ but then not get out of bed on Sunday morning to worship Him? When studying God’s Word daily and worshipping regularly are not a priority, that is when people begin to lose their moral compass, and things start falling apart. “What is going to help you remember who God is if you are not worshipping God every chance you get?” Tim asked. Participating in worship regularly helps us focus on God and who He is and what He has done and will do. We tend to get caught up in whether or not we “get” something out of worship- perhaps the sermon didn’t speak to where we are in life, or we didn’t care for the music. “Where did we get the idea that worship is about us? It’s not about our preferences or personal tastes,” he continued. “When we leave church, we should not ask ‘did worship please me’ but ‘did my worship please the Father? Did my heart please God’s heart?’”

January-February 2013

“It’s about coming together as the body of Christ, and standing in awe of the Father, who He is and what He has done for us,” he said. John 4:23 states, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” “God’s not looking for church-goers or religious people. He’s looking for worshippers,” Tim said. “Worshippers who will come and turn their face to the heavens and stand in awe of this amazing God, and praise Him for His amazing deeds, and the amazing life he has given each of us…If we aren’t worshipping God regularly, we’ll forget him.” Frazer’s vision for worship in 2013 and beyond is to begin thinking outside the box to reach a new generation. That could mean not being restricted to meeting only within a certain block of time on Sunday mornings. A team is looking into other possible options for worship times, different locations and other formats and how to make them available so more people can participate. It’s not about taking things away or changing the way things have always been doneit’s about offering more options to reach as many people as possible. Tim said, “Let’s create as a church body compelling connections with Christ, let’s look at our own lives and ask if we have a compelling connection to Christ, how are we going to create those compelling connections to Christ? Every member in the Word, every member in Community, every member in Mission and every member in Worship.” “I believe we can set a new standard for worship in America. We won’t have 40 percent of our people in worship. We’ll have 100 percent. I’m bold enough to believe that. Are you?” To listen to Dr. Tim’s full sermon, go to frazerumc.org/media and select either the Sanctuary worship for Jan. 6, 2013 or Wesley Hall worship for Jan. 1, 2013.

continued from page 1 The next phase includes the Transformation Circles program, which began this month. Several candidates are working through a 15 week program based on the book “Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’ By World,” and graduates of the program will be matched up with volunteers from Frazer who will provide support and encouragement by giving them “a hand up not a hand out.” Volunteer training for this ministry also began on Jan. 9. If you did not sign up to serve with Transformation Montgomery on your commitment card and would like to learn more about getting involved with the “people” side of the program, contact Peggy Spaeth at 2410448 or peggy@peggyspaeth.com Volunteers will resume their weekly building, cleaning and renovation work in Garden Square this month. A crew is out there almost every Thursday from around 8:30 a.m. to noon. and some Saturday work days will be scheduled as well. If you would like to lend a hand, or arrange for your Sunday School class or small group to help out at Garden Square, contact Charlie Kendall at 5492175. Thank you, Frazer family, for continuing to serve God by shining His light into the darkness, both here in Montgomery and around the world. Some photos of the exterior and interior of the commercial building Frazer recently acquired in the Garden Square neighborhood. Transformation Montgomery plans to renovate the building and turn it into a Dream Center for the community. Classrooms for tutoring, adult education, afterschool programs, Bible study groups and more are just a few of the ideas for how the center can bring the community together. A special offering collected on Christmas Eve will help with the costs of remodeling the building.

“You’ll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew, rebuild the foundations from out of your past. You’ll be known as those who can fix anything, restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community livable again.” —Isaiah 58: 12 (The Message)

One-day seminar with ‘Toxic Charity’ author Bob Lupton aims to reveal a new way of looking at charity, community building that can lead to real transformation Staff Reports When Bob Lupton set out to work with the poor in Atlanta, he discovered an unsettling reality: often the good intentions of churches and agencies were actually making things worse in the communities they sought to serve by contributing to a culture of entitlement and dependency. Bob is now an outspoken advocate against “toxic charity”—and FOR sustainable ministry that brings about true life-transformation. Bob will be sharing his heart for helping others Saturday, March 2 at Frazer, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. If you work or volunteer in any ministry, non-profit, or government agency that seeks to provide lasting change for people in poverty, this one-day seminar is your place to start to discover a whole new way to think about community building that truly makes a difference. The cost for the one-day training is $10 per person and includes a Chick-fil-a boxed lunch. Reserve your pot by Wednesday, Feb. 27 by calling Kris Johnson in the Missions Office, 334-495-6362 or emailing kris@frazerumc.org. If you want to learn more about how to make a real, life-transforming impact on the needy in our community, don’t miss this eyeopening and inspirational seminar.

Be tight-fisted until the crisis is over Dave Says Dave Ramsey

Dear Dave, Recently, my husband had to quit his job due to an old back injury. We have $25,000 in debt, but I’ll be receiving a $38,000 inheritance in a couple ofweeks. Should we use the money to pay off our debt, or hold on to it in case he needs surgery? —Kristen Dear Kristen, Now is the time to keep the cash piled high. You’re in the middle of an emergency, and that means you push the pause button on your Total Money Makeover and stop paying extra on debt. Surgery is a possibility at this point, plus you may need some of that money to live on until his job situation improves. Then, the moment he returns to work and things are stabilized, you jump back into getting control of your finances. Use whatever is left of the $38,000 to pay off debt that very day. But right now you don’t need to worry about becoming debt-free, only to turn around and be in a mess in the event he has trouble finding another job. Let me give you a warning too. Thirty-eight thousand dollars is a great gift. If someone handed me a check for that amount, I’d cash it in a heartbeat. But it’s not $380,000 or $3.8 million. It’s easy to develop a false sense of security if you’ve never received a check

of that size. This kind of money is enough to keep the wolf away from the door for a while, but it’s nothing to retire on. This little nest egg is a real blessing, Kristen. Just make sure you handle it wisely, and take into account all of the possibilities over the next couple of months. In a best-case scenario your husband won’t need surgery, he’ll find a job pretty soon, and you guys won’t have to dig in to the inheritance money. Hang on to as much as possible, though. This sounds like a time of personal and professional transition for you both, and having that kind of extra cash around could be a lifesaver! —Dave Reprinted with Permission. John Croyle, founder and executive director of Big Oak Ranch, will speak at the Sportsmen’s Ministry Wild Game Dinner Feb. 7.

The Sportsmen’s Ministry will host their annual Wild Game Dinner Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Enjoy a delicious wild game dinner, an evening of fellowship and an inspirint talk from John Croyle, legendary Alabama football player, avid outdoorsman and founder of the Big Oak Ranch, a Christian home for children who need a chance. Cost for dinner is $5 and guests are encouraged to bring a wild game dish to feed 8-10 people. John Croyle found out early in life what he was born to do. As a member of the 1973 University of Alabama Championship team, he had a dream to build the best children’s home in America. On Bear Bryant’s advice, John turned down offers for the NFL to make that dream a reality and create a place for hurting kids who needed a chance.
