It requires serious reflection and disciplined living. Yet it is without a doubt the most rewarding life possible. At Frazer, we have a core value of “every member in ministry”—meaning that everyone has a part in our mission to make followers of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We are expecting 2013 to be an awesome year of life-transforming ministry and worldchanging missions in and through the people of God at Frazer UMC. Church Administrator Rusty Taylor pitches in with volunteers working on renovations in the Garden Square neighborhood.
By Ken Roach, Communications Director
Volunteers have been hitting the ground in the Garden Square neighborhood on Thursday mornings, putting hands and feet to the Transform Montgomery vision. The project, announced last fall as a way to bring affordable housing and life transformation to the working poor in our city, was stalled by
legal complications for many months. Recently, however, Frazer has finally been able to acquire houses, and volunteers have jumped at the opportunity to get to work. Once renovated, the plan is to take applicants to live in the houses, participating in life-transformation programs that will empower them to transition out of poverty and eventually own the homes. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate the life changing power of God to our city one family and one neighborhood at a time. Community Impact pastor Charlie Kendall explained that all types of volunteers are needed: unskilled “grunt” labor, skilled construction workers, and professional contractors. An informal group has been gathering at Garden Square on Thursday mornings, but Sunday School classes and other groups have also talked to Charlie about scheduling projects at other times. Charlie can be reached at charlie@frazerumc. org or 495-6313. The clean-up of the purchased homes is already having a broader impact on the neighborhood. Charlie tells the story of how a lady came up to him while he was cutting the grass and related to him how she has seen several other homeowners begin to take greater care of their own property since Frazer began getting involved. “The more we are out there in the neighborhood, building relationships with people face to face, the more opportunities we will have to share the love of God in word and in action,” Charlie said.
