Greetings: It is an honor to be the President of the Filipino American Society of South Jersey. I will do my best to serve the community and fulfill my duties and responsibilities to this association and its members. I will continue to move forward the goals and objectives set by our past administrations, and also work on new objectives that will energize and grow the membership of the association. This administration will seek the involvement and leverage the energy of the younger members of our community. We will build on past experiences and be open to new ideas. We hope to collaborate with other organizations to achieve common goals within the Filipino-American community. I believe the synergy of diverse backgrounds, interests and experiences allows us to accomplish sizeable goals when working together as one. Let us learn from the past and look forward to the future. Let us make a positive difference in the Filipino community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers and members of FASSJ for their effort and time spent on this association. Thanks for all your hard work preparing for this event, Valentines Ball 2019. Congratulations to Miss Valentine 2019 Jennifer Valdez Reyes. FAABCI 2019
Message Every year FASSJ celebrates the month of Love, with your benchmark “Love Award”. You have so rightfully recognized people in our community not just for their leadership but for their love of family, community and of God. Tonight we celebrate the “Love” and the servitude of these people to our beloved Filipino American society. Valentine actually is linked to pagan roots in the glory days of Rome. With today’s crash commercialism that the real meaning of “Love” is quickly forgotten and how the “one that loves” is more than willing to accept sacrifices for the one he or she truly loves. Love is indeed a wonderful feeling. The long tradition of FASSJ in celebrating Valentine’s and have accumulated a long list of Valentines muses that presents the beauty and the love from among your membership. To Jennifer Valdez Reyes my congratulations for being chosen as Miss Valentine’s 2019. You define inspiration to our young Filipina-Americans to follow your footsteps and fine example of love of family, enduring faith to God and love of country and fellowmen. I applaud her parents, Jes and Belinda Reyes for raising her to become what she is. The Love Award that you give this year is so special because you have chosen from your local community a couple that you present the unique recognition to receive the honors. Congratulations to Quirino and Carmelita Micua, Love Awardees 2019 for their love of family and community. To President Jes Reyes, Officers of FASSJ, Board of Directors and Members I salute all of of you in deep appreciation for what you have done to our community. Enjoy the evening and God Bless Us All. FASSJ MISS VALENTINE 2019
Jennifer was born and raised in New Jersey with her parents, Jes and Belinda, and her older sister, Jesselyn. Jennifer is the granddaughter of Tomas and Estrella Reyes, and Bartolome and Virginia Valdez. Although born in the United States, Jennifer fully embraces the Filipino culture and is honored to represent the Filipino American Society of South Jersey as Miss Valentine 2019. As well as exceeding in academics, Jennifer grew up with many interests. She joined Marcia Hyland Dance Center at the age of 3. Jennifer continued to take classes in Jazz, Ballet, and Hip-hop until the age of 18. For her last year of dancing, Jennifer was invited into the Marcia Hyland Junior Dance Company, where she performed with the most prestigious dancers of the dance center. With a strong interest in music, Jennifer also started taking piano lessons at the age of 8. She excelled in her performances and continues to have an interest in music today. Jennifer graduated from Lenape High School in 2013 and got accepted into Rutgers University New Brunswick. Jennifer always had a strong interest in the sciences and pursued a degree in Genetics. While also taking classes, Jennifer did undergraduate research at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University. She had the opportunity to work under Dr. Joachim Messing, who was once the world’s most-cited scientist. While working in the lab, Jennifer conducted her own project involving plant genetics and biofuel. She presented her project in front of many professors. Along with her research, Jennifer worked very hard in her classes. With many challenges, she persisted and received her Bachelor of Arts in Genetics with a Minor in Psychology in 2017. After Jennifer had graduated college, she took a year off from school to work with individuals on the Autism spectrum. Although it was a very challenging occupation, Jennifer believes it was the most rewarding to be able to help these individuals with their daily lives. Ultimately, Jennifer knew she wanted to further her education and strived to get into a Master’s program. In 2018, Jennifer got accepted in the School of Graduate Studies at Rutgers University to pursue a Master of Business and Science degree with a concentration in Biotechnology and Genomics. Today, Jennifer continues to fulfill her passion for science and hopes to one day make an impact in the Biotechnology Industry. Furthermore, Jennifer is proud to represent such an outstanding organization under her father’s presidency. Jennifer would like to express her gratitude toward all the members of FASSJ for giving her this wonderful opportunity to not only represent the organization, but to also represent her culture. As a Filipina-American, Jennifer is honored and grateful to represent the Filipino American Society of South Jersey as this year’s Miss Valentine.

Though retired and at times challenged by age related limitations they remain active participants in the community, supporting the cause and missions of their local organization. FAABCI 2019

THE FASSJ LOGO The FASSJ logo was re-designed in 2000 upon the request of the membership to keep with a more up to date image and in celebration of the millennium. The new design was done by Mr. Raymundo "Boots" Benitez who has architectural and design background. The flags of the United States of America and the Republic of the Philippines are shown intertwined symbolizing the unity of the aspirations of the two nations and their people. The date "1974" is shown at the bottom indicating the year the society was founded. The seal of the township of Cherry Hill in New Jersey on the left side indicates the place where the society was founded, in the Kingston area to be more precise. The Filipino American Society of South Jersey is a bona-fide Cherry Hill Township association. Emblazoned on the right side of the logo is the FASSJ chorale group logo. For years, the chorale group members have been the core of the association and other associations as well. The laurel leaves symbolize the triumph of perseverance and hard work over adversity. THE FASSJ CHORALE GROUP LOGO Again, designed in the year 2000 by Mr. Ray Benitez, the two flags indicate the unity of its people. The chorale group renders both Filipino and American songs. A lyre is emblazoned in the center, a fitting symbol of music and below it, is"i976", the year the chorale group was formed. The word "Himig Filipino" is in consonance with the style the songs are rendered, in the rhythm, pulse and celebration of the kundiman. The style, unique in its own, is applied whether the song is in Filipino or American. A small bahay kubo is shown on top in remembrance and nostalgia of Philippine life and music. The laurel leaves signify the triumph of music over diversity and cultural differences. THE ANNUAL FASSJ VALENTINES BALL This is the primary fund raising event of FASSJ. Yearly, a young woman is chosen to reign as Miss Valentine. Upon coronation, she becomes the ambassador of goodwill of the association to other activities of the community. Numerous FASSJ queens have gone on to life to become successful professionals, leaders, homemakers, and models of high moral standards. Proceeds from the affair are used to support our ongoing goal of acquiring educational materials about the Philippines. Currently, our collection of books and audio-visual materials are housed at the Cherry Hill Public Library and are open for public use. FASSJ supports also charitable organizations both in the Philippines and the United States. Some examples of beneficiaries include the American Red Cross, Archway Foundation, Philippine National Red Cross, Bantay-Bata Foundation and this year, FASSJ embraced and committed itself to help GAWAD KALINGA. Donations had been sent to the earthquake victims in the Philippines, Katrina victims in New Orleans and tsunami victims in Indonesia. FASSJ also donated substantial contributions to the Jose Rizal Monument Fund and the PCSNJ Community Center. On the lighter side, the association sponsors a free Christmas party for both adults and children, a summer picnic for members and their families and participation in the Independence Day celebration in Cooper River Park. Through the years, numerous beneficiaries of these funds include sponsorship of athletic teams, informational seminars at the CHPL, Philippine cultural programs for the township and other local activities. FASSJ supports also the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia, being one of the original associations involved in its conception. FASSJ LOVE AWARD 2008 marks the inclusion of the LOVE AWARD in to the celebration. The LOVE AWARD carries one criteria only- dedicated and selfless community service. The award is given regardless of educational, professional and personal attainment, political or civic affiliations, religion, and status in life. There is only one awardee every year. This is how FASSJ converts the love generated on Valentines Day. . . to the love and service of humanity in its own little way. THE NOBLEST MOTIVE IS THE PUBLIC GOOD" RCB/2/9/2008 16
