Philippine Nurses Association of America, Induction of Officers Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada

Leticia C. Hermosa, PNAA President 2014-2016

Acceptance Speech June 28, 2014 "With guidance from colleagues and a vision of where we are heading as an organization, I chose three actions words as the theme during my tenure: “Lead, Empower, Transform.” Three simple words, but powerful, challenging, dynamic, and energizing. These are not new concepts. We had leaders since the start of mankind. We have heard “empowerment” a million times. His Excellency, Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia Jr.; PNAA Executive Board and Advisory Council; State Chapter Officers and members; my fellow nurses, distinguished guests: I stand before you tonight to accept the task as President of the Philippine Nurses Association of America. I am grateful for the trust and confidence that you have bestowed upon me to lead our organization from 2014 to 2016.

When I declared my oath of office and accepted the responsibilities that go with it, I also pledged that I will continue to carry the same spirit and commitment that our past presidents have done before us. I shall work with the PNAA Executive Board and Chapter leaders, so that together, we shall continue to build and sustain the strength of PNAA and move it forward to greater heights. Today, we all know that we are challenged by the changing landscape of our times: be it healthcare, economics, politics, world news, social responsibilities. Our challenges may be new, and the instruments with which we confront them may be new, such as new technology, new knowledge, new people, but the values upon which our success depends: hard work, accountability, courage, tolerance, curiosity, teamwork: these things are not new. The challenging part is putting these

I thank Victoria Navarro and the PNAA 2012-2014 Executive Board and Cabinet for their services to PNAA during the past two years. I thank the Chapter Presidents and Officers for their continued dedication and generosity in contributing their times and talents, as well as their families and love ones who supported them in carrying out the mission of PNAA. Seventeen PNAA presidents have now taken the presidential oath since 1979. Over the years, PNAA has carried on, because our leaders remained faithful and committed to PNAA’s mission to promote the interest of our fellow Filipino-American nurses throughout the United States and the Philippines. As we consider the challenging responsibilities that unfold before us, we remember with humble gratitude our PNAA Advisory Council, who at this very moment, continue to guide us so that we may continue to follow the path that they once paved for us. We honor them not only because they are the guardians of our organization, but because they embody the spirit of commitment to service -- the willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves.

should be heading to. Alongside with the Executive Board, we need to examine and reevaluate our mission, goals and Bylaws, to ensure that they continue to be relevant to today’s changing landscape and still meet the needs of the wide spectrum of generations and backgrounds of our fellow nurses. To lead is to empower our leaders, especially our Regional Vice Presidents so that they can lead their regions with confidence and sense of direction, but still maintain the autonomy of individual chapters. As an organization, we have the opportunity to play an active role in transforming our healthcare delivery system and the quality of care. When the Institute of Medicine and Robert Wood Johnson issued their recommendations on the Future of Nursing in 2011, a year after the enactment of Health Care Reform, they issued bold national recommendations, including transformation of the nursing workforce, and nursing education system. They defined a clear agenda and blueprint for action, including changes in public and institutional polices at the national, state and local levels. During the next two years, we will work in collaboration with other professional nursing organizations across the country, and join the coalition for action to transform health care through nursing. At the anniversary of the Institute of Medicine, Dr. Risa Lavizzo- Mourey, President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in her speech said, and I quote: “Nurses are always there for us during our tough times. They are the ones we turn to and trust, whether we are hospitals looking to improve safety, physicians looking for a greater understanding of our patients, or parents looking for guidance on how to raise a healthy child. And, of course, we rely on nurses when we are patients. For all those reasons, nurses belong exactly where the IOM recommendations place them: at the center of transformative change in heath and health

care”. So with all the creative energy and talent in our hands, we will begin an era of action: Lead, Empower, Transform. Let’s Do it! Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew our faith and our hope. For the future of nursing; for the future of PNAA. In the days and months ahead, we will remove roadblocks that have slowed our creativity and have reduced our productivity. Steps will be taken aimed at restoring the balance between autonomy and responsibility. I have seen the strength of o our leadership. We can and we will lead, empower and transform whenever and wherever we have the opportunity. In closing, let me say this: I will do my best, but I will not do it alone. We have to work together. To my fellow nurses, let your voice be heard. Whenever you have a chance, say something good about your colleagues. It is time for us to join hands and commit ourselves together and strengthen the value of engagement and professionalism. Find something meaningful, something greater than yourselves.

Lead, Empower, Transform: Let’s do it! Thank you. God Bless us all. God bless PNAA. Mabuhay ang Pilipino. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! Leticia Hermosa, RN, Esq. President, PNAA 2014-2016

The PNAA Social Construct: The Saga Continues By: Vicky Navarro, MSN, RN, CENP

On June 28, the 20122014 Executive Board and its Cabinet concluded our term of office. This PNAA Social Construct “empowering collaborations and sustaining healthy communities” gave birth to the First Global Summit for Filipino Nurses (January 2014). With the Philippine Nurses Association, Inc., Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Philippine Nursing (ADPCN), Association of Nursing Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) and the Commission of Filipinos Overseas (CFO) a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed for knowledge exchange and building learning communities among Filipino nurses worldwide. This MOU set the foundation for major collaborations: • Philippine Department of Health on the Nurse Anesthesia Specialty program. • RP local government in Bacolod; South Cotabato/ Sarangani, Adventist School of Nursing on developing nurse midwives for Maternal/Child Health; reduction of maternal and infant mortality to meet the WHO MDG with the Zuellig Foundation. • Project HOPE for the formation of a Disaster Reserve Corps. • Alliance for Ethical International Recruitment Practices ‘train-the-trainers’ educational program to reduce predatory recruitment and human trafficking among migrants from the Philippines to the US . • California Board of Nursing and Philippine Commission on Higher Education on curriculum concurrency standards allowing 30 nurses to retake courses and qualify for RN licensure. • AARP on caring for the elderly from the point of view of Filipino American nurses. • CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) on certification for Certified Application Counselors or Champion for Coverage for health insurance education. • Gawad Kalinga USA and PNAAF: The FilAm Model for Nation Building" framework solution getting solidarity in the US while helping the Philippines at the same time. Our commitment to the nursing profession, patient care and safety supported by the Philippine Embassy in the US and Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO),

Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) resulted in numerous initiatives, position statements and press releases, improved PNAA website, electronic Inside PNAA newsletter, Advance Practice Nurse Institute and the Journal of Nursing Practice Applications and Reviews of Research. A student coalition program has been initiated. Two annual 5K Walk/Run (raising $150,000) funded increased member participation in the Leadership Institute. We completed the PNAA Gawad Kalinga Village in Piel, Bulacan with 30 homes supporting Tony Meloto’s vision of poverty eradication in the Philippines. PNAA is moving towards the next level with the concept and application of Social Entrepreneurship. We tackled Labor Trafficking on Nurses in a PBS News Hour documentary. PNAA and PNAAF raised more than $100,000 (in addition to the immediate monetary and in-kind donations and medical missions by chapters) for Kababayan Emergency Fund for relatives of members, the rebuilding and restoration of the Visayan Peninsula devastated by Haiyan Typhoon, becoming a major supporter of the Philippine Humanitarian Coalition. A major Health Care Network pulled out a customer relations training video offensive to Filipino nurses and employees. Together with the Philippine Embassy in the US, MHC and CFO, CRM Learning, producer of the video, removed the scene that members of the PNAA and no less than the Philippine Ambassador to the United States found to be culturally offensive to Filipinos, withdrew video from inventory and notified buyers. This scene is incongruent with existing guidelines and regulations relative to the “English Only Rule” which the EEOC has struck down as language discrimination and violates Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 1964. Finally, the PNAAF initiated the establishment of the first endowment: The Annie and Denis Vista Endowment Fund for the Leadership Scholars Program. We have delivered. PNAA has arrived. I am moving on as member of the Advisory Council and co-Director of the Philippine Humanitarian Coalition. My heartfelt appreciation for your indelible imprint in this most fulfilling time of our lives. Victoria B. Navarro 17th President, PNAA

PNAA 35th National Convention EducationDay Reflections By: Fe Nieves Khouw The Education Day theme was “PNAA Social Construct: Sustaining Global Health, Empowering Collaborations. This theme was anchored in three keynote addresses. The opening keynote was delivered by Mr. Fred deSam Lazaro, a journalist with PBS NewsHour who focuses his lens and his writing on world events that would not necessarily pique the interest of commercial press; the afternoon keynote was presented by Jerick Limoanco, a rising prodigy of the Gawad Kalinga movement which was started in the Philippines and has been recognized globally as a strategy to help the poor get out of poverty. And the closing keynote was delivered by Anthony Armada who brought the whole day’s learning together by focusing on one’s “true north”. “Social Entrepreneurship: Business Strategies for Human and Environmental Wellbeing”. Certainly a mouthful of a title and at first difficult to comprehend. Mr. DeSam Lazaro presented through prose, pictures and videos the innate adaptability, resilience and determination of Filipinos. Social entrepreneurship is the use of business to address the needs of the poor, in the process helping the poor get out of binds they usually find themselves in at the same time that money is made through the business venture. Mr. Desam Lazaro described how Filipinos smile as we work our way through adversity. After typhoon Haiyan destroyed much of the Visayan region, he met a group of newly graduated nurses who were preparing to take a trip to take their registered nurse licensing examination. They were prepared and no flood or devastation would prevent them from pursuing what it is they needed to do. Another is the story of a foreign educated young professional working in the Philippines who heeded his professor’s advice to “not turn your back to that which makes you uncomfortable”. This young professional used his engineering education to design the “water bottle light”, an ingenious way to provide light to poor neighborhoods without electricity. In the process, the business grew and individuals who had no jobs joined the workforce either as “manufacturers”, installers or vendors of this water bottle light. The principle is quite simple, one has to grow wealth in order to get out of poverty and business strategies work to help the poor. Social Entrepreneurship in action is demonstrated by Jerick Limoanco’s presentation showcasing the “Farm Village University: Building Social Businesses for Inclusive Growth. Jerick showed pictures of a donated land in the

Philippines which was a barren quarry and just a year later, the land was dotted by colorful homes (built through the Gawad Kalinga movement) and luscious green vegetation. Some of the significant principles that made this demonstration project a huge success are innovative. The key principle is joining the talents of the rich (and educated) with the talents of the poor. In Jerick’s words, he “is a farmer but (I) don’t know how to farm”. Anchored in the principle of connecting the talent of the rich with the talent of the poor, the joint forces of the farmers and the business acumen of young idealistic professionals who believe their talents are best used in the Philippines, the Farm University is a microcosm of what success looks like when one is not deterred by socioeconomic groupings and instead fueled by innovative thinking. Jerick relates that the language in the farm is English or French and when asked why this is so, the response was “the children already know how to speak Tagalog” but if we teach them to speak English or French, they will be equipped with the languages which are used in economic transactions in the world”. Joining the talents of the rich and the talents of the poor is a true partnership. It is not paternalistic, it is true collaboration. Another key to success seems to the idealistic nature, the energy and motivation of young professionals. The idealism to pursue a principle and the energy to make it things happen fast through the use of social media. Jerick is in his early 30s but he says he is “old” compared to the other young professionals he is working with who are mostly in their midtwenties. The ability to mobilize others was displayed in their response to the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan; within hours their group was able to mobilize, hundreds, thousands of young people to volunteer to help; they planned and deployed the necessary logistics to maximize their assistance to the most devastated areas. The Gawad Kalinga movement was started years ago by Tony Meloto, a visionary and innovative thinker who wanted to use his insights about poverty and his business talents to help the poor get out of poverty. Tony Meloto and the Gawad Kalinga movement is a magnet to young professionals who can make his vision come true. These young professionals could pursue significant international careers; many have turned down jobs, scholarships and other opportunities to pursue and fuel this vision. Why? Because they can/ are able to make a significant contribution. In essence “Tony Meloto (Tito Tony) promises and we deliver”

Research in Action: AHRQ’s Spanish-Language Resources Assist a Texas-Based Nurse and a Concerned Caregiver Source: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality website Gledelyn Alejandro, R.N., president-elect of the Philippine Nurses Association of Texas, was supervising nurses at one of her organization’s community health fairs when a woman discreetly approached her. The woman’s son was struggling with depression, and she did not know how to help him. Alejandro, recalling the scene at that Irving, Texas, health fair, said she quickly understood the woman's need for Spanishlanguage information that would help her learn more about depression and understand her son's options for treatment. While arranging for the woman to speak with a counselor, Alejandro also provided a copy of AHRQ's publication, Medicamentos para tratar la depresión: Revisión de la investigación para adultos (Medicines for Treating Depression: A Review of the Research for Adults). "That mother was extremely appreciative of all the resources and thanked us profusely for our help," Alejandro recalled. Alejandro's decision to share information from AHRQ's Effective Health Care (EHC) Program is an example of how the Agency's evidence-based resources can help patients and caregivers become better informed about treatment options for chronic health conditions. In addition to the EHC Program publication on medications for depression, Alejandro's team distributed two additional resources: Measuring Your Blood Pressure at Home:

A Review of the Research for Adults and Methods for Delivering Insulin and Monitoring Blood Sugar: A Review of the Research for Children, Teens, and Adults With Diabetes. Fair attendees were also encouraged to watch videos promoting AHRQ's Treatment Options: Explore. Compare. Prepare. initiative, which encourages patients and caregivers to access AHRQ's full inventory of more than 50 publications that summarize the benefits and risks of treatment options for conditions ranging from arthritis to autism to migraine headaches. AHRQ's information tools and resources were a terrific complement, Alejandro said, to the blood pressure and glucose checks performed by her team of volunteer nurses. "I want to be sure our team never lets a patient walk out without giving them at least one or two educational resources," Ms. Alejandro said. "The AHRQ materials are presented at such an effective level for patients, and they really appreciate how easy they are to understand. It's a real joy for us to be able to help patients and get the educational resources out there with the public." Link: http://www.ahrq.gov/news/newsletters/ insidetrack/25/index.html#art2

Update on Requirements for Internationally Educated Nurses By: Remedios A. Solarte, MSN, RN Regulations and requirements regarding internationally educated nurses vary from board of nursing to board of nursing and may include: obtaining Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) certification; taking an English Proficiency examination; and obtaining official review of credentials. Candidates do not need to be U.S. citizens to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) however, there are some boards of nursing that require U.S. Social Security numbers to apply for licensure to obtain a license. A table summarizing the CGFNS and Social Security requirements of the 50 State Boards of Nursing and the District of Columbia for foreign educated nurses taking the NCLEX in International Testing Centers is found in the PNAA website. Key for Services of CGFNS: (Source: www.cgfns.org) Credentials Evaluation Services (CES) This report meets the specific requirements of individual state boards of nursing, incorporating their requirements templates and including a statement of comparability of an applicant’s education when measured against U.S. standards. Credential Verification Service for New York State Application (CVS) This report verifies the authenticity of international education and licensure credentials for the State of New York. Certification Program (CP) The Certification Program includes the CGFNS Qualifying Exam®, a credentials evaluation and demonstration of English language proficiency. Who is this service for? First-level, general nurses educated outside the United States Why Certification Program? At the state level, the Certification Program is a requirement for licensure by specific State Boards of Nursing. At the federal level, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam® component satisfies the examination requirement of the VisaScreen®: Visa Credentials Assessment for immigration. International Standards for Professional Nurses (ISPN) The ISPN Program measures nursing knowledge of pro-

fessional nurses against international standards. This program is for internationally educated nurses seeking to validate their nursing education against international standards. Nurses that participate in the ISPN Program reside in the country in which the program is offered. The ISPN Program consists of two components: 1) an initial verification of first-level, general nurse status and 2) passing the CGFNS Qualifying Exam®. Who can apply for the ISPN Program? First-level, General Nurses Several states have been successful in removing the Certification Program which includes the CGFNS Qualifying Examination, a credentials evaluation, and demonstration of English language proficiency. Many states require only the Credentials Evaluation Services (CES) but needs the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) to validate the licenses of these foreign educated nurses prior to being certified by CGFNS. This will then qualify them to take the NCLEX. Validation of licenses is covered under PRC Resolution No. 2012-668. Due to exorbitant rate charged by the PRC, PNAA represented by President Victoria Navarro and Past President Remedios Solarte met with PRC to discuss the matter after the 9th International Nursing Conference in Manila. A communication was sent from PRC stating that they have noted the PNAA recommendations to improve their verification services through the website. Priceless Proud Moments from the 35th PNAA Annual Convention at Las Vegas Nevada By: Meriam Canares 2014-2016 BOD, PNANJ

The information about the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) 35th Annual Convention in Las Vegas Nevada was initially sent in March 2014. By April, 2014, e-mail was sent at least every week, with the same reminders including the 5K run. By the second half in May-2014, frequent e-mail exchanges were noticed about the deadline for registration, educational activities, 5K run, and for hotel reservation, and that’s when I started to ask myself do I have to attend this convention? Do I need to join the group when I don’t even need the CEU’s for this year, not an awardee, and not even in the clinical setting to appreciate all the educational activities that they offered? But wait a second, I am still part of the Executive Board of the Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey (PNA-NJ) and when I run for this office, I made a commitment to be a representative of Somerset Country subchapter and to the bigger Central area of New Jersey, and in general the association of the Philippine nurses in New Jersey. For me, when you

make a commitment you should make an effort to fulfill your commitment. The first task that I did to fulfill this commitment is to review the previous e-mail and this time paying more attention on the details and started donating to the colleagues who have registered for the 5 K run and was asking for donation. I have sent 3 donations to three people when I realized that I could probably help the chapter better by registering myself as a runner and asking my officemates to donate. My initial goal was $500 and with the help of my relatives and few colleagues at work, I was able to raised almost $900 dollars. Not only did I register for the 5K run, registered for the networking, educational activities and the Gala night, I also decided to join the dance group. My point is that if I did not make the commitment, I might have missed the “awesome showmanship and teamwork of the “wedding party” (per Majuvy) at the Networking Night who garnered the second place, but in ArTo next page >

lin’s word, the rank is not as important for “what matters most is the camaraderie we shared, with the joy, fun and happiness that came along with it”. Have I not joined the conference, this is not the only one I missed but I will also have missed the poster presentations of my colleagues, the great speakers in the Education Day, and the interesting topics in the different concurrent sessions. If I did not go to the Gala Night, I might have missed the proud faces of my colleagues who are award recipients like Laura Garcia for the Editor of the Year Award, the PNAA Care Awards for Vicky Javier - Information Technology, Jonathan Gapilango-Research, Ronnie Dato- Clinical Practice, and of course our very own PNA-NJ president Belle Villafuerte- Nursing Administrator. I might have also missed the joy and happiness on the faces of their proud parents, husband/wives, children, partners, relatives, and friends and missed sharing their successes. If I did not register for the 5 K Run, I might have missed the friendly challenges between different regions, cheering for old friends/acquaintances who now belongs to a different region, walking side by side with new friends, meeting relatives of friends, meeting people from the same place, who did not meet in the Philippines, but see each other at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, doing the Zumba moves with the rest of the PNAA nurses, and on top of this doing this for a good cause- the PNAA Foundation. It might have caused me a lot of dollars for the 4-day stay I have in Las Vegas, but the fun, camaraderie and sharing proud moments with the achievers of PNA-NJ is worth every penny of it and the experience was priceless.

What Will Michelle Do (WWMD)? I Had to Stand Up for All By: Karen Michelle M. Cendana, RN BSN CRN PNATCC, Inc. President (2013-2015) PNAA South Central Region COPRR (2014-2015) The Philippine Nurses Association of America, Inc. (PNAA, Inc.) molded me of who I am right now as a leader. This organization gave me vast knowledge in the new trends in Nursing Practice and Leadership Role Development. As member of PNAA for 8 years, the most valuable lessons learned from this association are insights from Local and International Social Awareness Issue topics pertaining to our ethnicity that was presented during the regional and national conferences seminars. This experience is very unique comparable to different national professional organizations I am affiliated with. I never had this kind of opportunity, these concerns are rarely discussed. The knowledge I acquired is life changing for me as a nurse leader. It empowered me to the extent of being committed and passionate about social change, a passion that I lost for some time because I thought nursing leadership is only confined in the four walls of the hospital. I was mistaken; it paved a way to new perspective. Now, I have a vision of leadership that will transform our community for the betterment of our society. My leadership role and empowerment did not start overnight. My journey started several years ago through PNAA leadership training. I have attended numerous PNAA Leadership and Educational Seminars and presented with cultural diversity sensitivity subjects but the lectures from Atty. Arnedo Valera Esq. (PNAA Legal Counsel) and Atty. David Lopez (U.S. E.E.O.C.

General Counsel) during the National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio made a huge impact in my leadership role. I became more aware of our rights as a minority in this country and enabled me to stand for what is right. I firmly believe as Filipinos regardless of our education or profession we need to uphold the image of our people. This is why when my employer showed the CRM Learning video entitled “It’s a Dog’s World” for our customer service training and depicted the Filipino employees in a negative way, I verbalized my concern at that point and immediately sought the assistance of Victoria Navarro, the PNAA President at that time to guide me on how to put an end to this discriminatory training video, because I refused to be called a “Silent Asian”. Immediate Past-President Navarro handled my concern objectively and methodically which the end result was a huge success! PNAA under her presidency achieved the full resolution in 8 weeks! I am truly thankful to PNAA Immediate Past President Victoria Navarro and her Executive Board of 2012-2014, Atty. Arnedo Valera, Esq.theExecutive Director of Migrant Heritage Commission, Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. of the US Philippine Embassy, Minister and Consul Elmer Cato of the Republic of the Philippine Embassy, Loida Nicolas of Commission on Filipinos Overseas and to all who supported me in upholding the Filipino image. The expeditious resolution of this pertinent issue is not be possible without all your help. There are no adequate words to express my gratitude. I am so happy that our voices are heard and now we are “Silent Asians No More”! Maraming Salamat at Mabuhay Ang Lahing Filipino!

A Salute to PNASD’s 40th Year Anniversary By: Lourdes E. DePerio, MSN RN, PNASD Board Member Victoria Berbano, MHA, BSN, PNASD Board Member Chona Lutap, BSN RN PNASD Chairman of the Board

PNASD Officers and Board of Directors 2014-2016 The Philippine Nurses Association of San Diego County, Inc. (PNASD) was founded in 1974, by a small group of Filipino nurses led by Fem Ramirez. After forty years of watching how this organization had come a long way, we can attest to the fact that, under a succession of strong nursing leadership committed to service, PNASD had grown professionally, from expanding its membership outside of the “Filipino Heritage only” mantra, to becoming more innovative especially in technology, and more forward oriented to survive changes and challenges to meet present day needs of members and the community. PNASD celebrated its 40th year anniversary last June 21, 2014 at the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa, a venue fitting to salute the organization’s outstanding commitment to leadership and excellence. It was at-

tended by distinguished community leaders, nursing faculty from local nursing programs, nursing directors, Michael Jackson from the California Board of Registered Nursing, Philippine Nurses’ Association of America (PNAA) executives and the newly elected PNAA President Dr. Letty Hermosa, local members, friends and families. It was an event full of pomp and circumstance, elegance, gala and glamour. The program began with the parade of past presidents carrying their personalized banners with the PNASD founder leading the way. What a beautiful sight and pride to see the 28 banners of Presidents who had moved this organization in the forefront with other professional organization. As the banners were positioned in the corners of the ballroom, we can see the historical evolution of an organization that all Filipino nurses can be a part of. Behind all these pageantry, we can’t continue on with the program without observing a

Following the honor of the past presidents, came the Color Guard parade, a group of servicemen representing each branch of the military. It was an emotional and moving moment to watch as they performed their drill routine. All the guests stood still, thoroughly silent, saw a few tears shed, and heartfelt admiration for their flawless drill execution. The Color Guard had been always a part of the PNASD activities. Dr. Letty Hermosa, the Gala guest speaker and inducting officer delivered her inspiring message followed by the installation of the new PNASD officers. Ms. Lourdes Nisperos, Western Region PNAA Vice President and representing Ms. Victoria Navarro, PNAA President 2012-2014, delivered her message on “Sustaining Excellence through Strategic and Synergistic Collaboration”. It was an honor to have these two powerful PNAA leaders speaking to a crowd of fellow professionals and emphasizing the importance of PNASD’s strength and potentials. The Gala not only celebrated PNASD’s Ruby anniversary but it also highlighted the achievements of nursing scholars and licensed nurses who demonstrated excellence in their field of experience. Through the unwavering support of corporate sponsors and donors, PNASD was able to grant scholarship awards to five undergraduate and five graduate nursing students. Twelvenurses from various hospitals and one from school of nursing were chosen to receive the Nurse Excellence Award and were presented plaques and bouquet of flowers. PNASD was indeed proud to salute these honorees.

Our 3 Vs: Visibility – distinct presence in and being part of the community; Vitality – our essence is our strength; and Viability – to prevail in professional existence. Not only did we touch the lives of our local and national communities, we had the opportunity to touch the lives of people globally. PNAH contributed to improve the lives of the orphans in Jinja, Uganda, Africa by supporting me during my recent Fulbright Scholar/ Specialist teaching grant. Paso Doble was also presented to entertain the audience; this was choreographed by Bessie Schiroky. The night could not have been as successful without the great work and unselfish sacrifices of the members, officers and past officers. Pina, Immediate past President, Thank you for all your hard work. We continue the mission, as Nursing is our passion. Nursing is helping, caring and by nature nurses are altruistic people. Thank you everyone, and Thank you as well to our visitors, sponsors and supporters. We had a lot of inquiries about our posters and we have provided our inquirers with our PNANJ business cards to contact us for additional information. Several PNAA members liked the idea of having PNA business card.
