Judges' Choice Award Trail House - Gerry & Clyde Hicks Clyde and Gerry Hicks opened The Trail House in 1984 on South Market Street in Downtown Frederick. At that time, the revitalization of downtown was just beginning, and they knew they wanted to be part of the resurgence. Gerry was born and raised in Frederick and her family has a rich history in the community. She and Clyde, who is from Arkansas, met in North Carolina. Both were looking for a new line of work when it clicked that they should share their outdoor interests with others. Clyde suggested moving back to Frederick to pursue this opportunity. Their goal was to have one shop and to run it well. They wanted the staff to be like family and to know their customers by name. Thirty-two years later, after weathering economic ups and downs and watching downtown grow into a vibrant community, they have accomplished their goal. Clyde and Gerry Hicks are an example of how entrepreneurs can combine their passions with their professions. "Put simply, we love the outdoors and we want you to love it too. We want you to breathe in the seasons. We want you to find the adventure that makes your heart pump. We want you to explore. In your own backyard. On another continent. It doesn’t matter where, just that you’re playing outside." - Clyde & Gerry Hicks 17 South Market St., Frederick • (301) 694-8448
Chris E. Olson Master Entrepreneur Award Service Glass Industries - Phil Rauh Phil Rauh was born in Liebling, Romania. When he was nearly 4 years old, the Russians invaded Romania, and his mother fled with him and his sister to Austria. There, he enrolled in school and graduated at the age of 14. Phil then started his very first job as a sheet metal apprentice, working ten hour days for just $1 a week. In August 1956, Phil's family moved to the United States and settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There, Phil went back to school and graduated from high school. Although he didn't speak English well, he began work at Harrisburg Glass sweeping floors. He was given the opportunity to move to Frederick and became manager of Service Glass and Mirror. Under his management, the company shifted their business model from residential to glass and aluminum storefronts. They more than doubled their facility size and changed the name to Service Glass Industries. Phil eventually bought out his partners and continued to grow the company. As Service Glass Industries grew so did the size of their projects. What was once a small division of Harrisburg Glass Company is now a major commercial contractÂglazing firm with an impressive portfolio of multistory office buildings, commercial/residential buildings, hospitals and universities in the DC-Metro area. Today, Service Glass Industries has around 40 to 50 employees, and hires many subcontractors. To support the continuous growth of the company, they moved again in 2015 to their present location. It has been 50 years since Phil Rauh came to Frederick to manage the company, but through the years the things he attributes to his success remain the same: faith, his family, a hard working staff, and the United States of America. 500 Monocacy Blvd., Frederick • (301) 473-5500
