10:40 to 11:25 AM - Hall A When you talk about “driverless” cars, images of Knight Rider’s KITT Car may come to mind. While it’s hard to wrap your head around the idea of self-driving cars, automation of vehicles is accelerating, catalyzed by substantial private investment, successful demonstrations, and significant public discussion. This is a topic we, collectively, need to address and plan for – now. Transit is a high priority in every large, and small, city in the United States. Governments devote significant resources to transportation on a variety of levels. Mobility options are essential for economic development in urban environments. Interestingly, however, most cities are highly unprepared for driverless technology. The National League of Cities conducted an analysis of city and regional transportation planning documents for the 50 most popular cities in every state, a total of 68 different communities, and found only six percent of the plans consider the potential effect of driverless technology. The presentation will also focus on key takeaways and next steps in the planning process, as well as other ways this might change transportation as we know it.

STAHLBERG, NCI 1:55 to 2:40 PM - Hall A With the NCI already recognizing more than 100 distinct types, cancer is an extremely complex disease. As the need grows for cancer treatments tailored to each individual, the need also grows to understand more specifically about how cancer functions at the molecular level, how effective treatments for each individual can be found more quickly, and how results from all cancer patients can be brought together to provide insight into how cancer behaves. The presentation will highlight collaborative efforts underway at Frederick National Laboratory, in conjunction with leading scientists across the US, to combine advances in artificial intelligence and computing along with new approaches to probe biology and gather information to address the complexities of cancer, while accelerating insight into potential predictive solutions leading to increasingly precise and cancer-type specific treatments.
