How to find your perfect
wedding venue BY LISA KIM KENTLANDS MANSION
Planning a wedding isn’t rocket science, and even during a pandemic, there are a lot of ways you can celebrate your marriage. Today’s couples are picking what they like from the old traditions, getting rid of things that don’t make sense for them and adding in new, more personalized aspects, too. The beginning of a new life together is truly special and should be an authentic reflection of each unique couple.

Whatever style wedding you prefer, one of the first things you’ll want to do is find your perfect wedding venue. But what do you look for and how do you move forward when there are gathering restrictions and social distancing requirements? To get started, do a little online research to see which places can accommodate your guest list. Remember, a lot of venues must operate at 50% capacity or less due tow pandemic-related restrictions and there’s no way to know when this will change. Next, read the reviews, narrow it down to three to four places that fit your budget and guest count and schedule tours so you're prepared to make a decision. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE YOUR WEDDING DAY.
What does it look like? How does it feel? Focus in on the overall details of your ceremony and reception. As you walk down the aisle, are you outside or inside? Rustic barn or field? Garden full of flowers? Twinkle lights or candles? At the reception, is there dancing with strobe lights or hanging with friends at an old fashioned bar? Picture it all in your mind. The exact details might still be fuzzy, but figure out what vibe you’re going for your big day!
HAVE YOUR FIANCÉ DO THE SAME. Then,
compare, negotiate, and compromise until the vision is similar enough to bring to life. KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET CREATIVE.
You think you want a beach wedding, but your guests can’t make it to the beach? You can still have a beach-vibe and a similar feel to your day, even if there’s not an ocean in sight. Figure out the questions that will help determine if your dream vision can be a reality at the venue you’re

touring. Then, tell your tour guide about it and see if there’s a way to make it work. Here are a few things you might not have thought of, which could impact your decision: • How much time is included in the rental? Is the setup/cleanup time included, or will you have to pay extra? When you think of your day, do you want to rush around like a sweaty, crazy drill sergeant or do you want to relax, savoring time spent with loved ones? If you choose the latter, remember that
FrederickWeddings.com FrederickWeddings.com
Perfect Venue
everything takes more time than you think it will. If you remember nothing else, remember that!
• Ask how many events are scheduled per day. Some places schedule multiple events each day. This can impact cleaning, parking and when vendors can arrive to start setting up. • Find out who will be on site for questions or help during your event and what their responsibilities are. • Is rehearsal time included in your rental, or will that be an additional expense?
• Make sure your rental includes at least two hours of setup before the guests start arriving and one to two hours at the end to clear everyone out and clean up. Even if you’re not doing any of the décor yourself, your other vendors will need this time to get ready. Don’t forget time for formal pictures either before or after the ceremony – and make sure your rental includes all of that time. Do not scrimp on time. Your day will fly by and you’ll need every minute. • Find out exactly what the rental includes and if that fits what you’re looking for. Chairs? Tables? Setup? A lot of places include catering. This might be convenient, but can limit the menu options and will lock you in on prices for food and beverages. Do you have a special food preference? Make sure to ask if your venue has exclusive catering. Alcohol is the thing that is most often marked up, so if you can find a venue where you can supply your own alcohol, that might save you some money to spend elsewhere.
Frederick Weddings 2020
12
• Is the venue handicapped-accessible? If you have elderly or disabled guests, this might be important. • What is the cancellation policy? What is the security deposit? And when is everything due? If something unexpected happens can you reschedule without penalty? • Are there other policies that might impact your plans? What is allowed inside/outside – animals, tenting, candles, flower petals or sparklers? • What is the maximum capacity?
ASK ABOUT ANY CORONAVIRUS ADJUSTMENTS.
Are any new policies in place for the guests? Masks? Temperature checks? Liability waivers? Contact tracing protocols? What is the venue doing to sanitize between events? Are buffets allowed? Wine at guest tables?
FrederickWeddings.com
Passed hors d’oeuvres? Is a dance floor allowed? These are all good jumping-off points that will help you drill into the details and figure out which venue will best meet your needs. Doing some homework before your tours will help you feel prepared, but you might still get overwhelmed with all the information you’ll receive during your tours. Most venues will give you all the information in writing to take home. If not, request it. You can also ask to take some pictures during the tour so you remember the details you liked or didn’t like about each place. Also, don’t be afraid to schedule a second tour. Once you’ve visited a few venues, you’ll have a clearer idea of what you’re looking for and the important questions to ask— questions that you might not have thought of the first time.
The beginning of a new life together is truly special and should be an authentic reflection of each unique couple.

Touring a wedding venue looks a little different this year. I spread tours throughout the day and stay socially distanced. I ask for everyone who is coming to tour to wear a mask. Our past wedding photos set up digitally for potential clients to view, and I sanitize after each use.
I am also offering virtual tours of the venue and have been sending contracts via email and taking payments over the phone. I personally enjoy the face-to-face tours, as I want potential clients to experience the feeling of walking into the venue and visualizing getting married here.

Guests come to weddings to have a good time. My job is to show them a great time on the couple’s behalf. We make announcements to remind folks to keep socially distanced, wear a mask, that sort of thing. We’ve got some new protocols to keep everyone as safe as possible. We’ve installed plexiglass sneeze guards at the DJ booth, and a nifty backlit ‘Text to request’ sign so guests can still make requests from a distance.
Frederick Weddings 2020
Folks are still dancing, guests still want to have a good time. The crowds are smaller, but they are more intimate, and suddenly you become more connected to everyone on a more personal level. Instead of crowd controlling a giant herd of party-goin’ cats, you now feel more like the host of a sweet dinner party, and by the end of the night, you’re on a first name basis with all the guests.

TENTH WARD DISTILLING COMPANY Amanda Boroughs
We were extremely lucky to be able to postpone most of our 2020 weddings to later dates in 2021 or 2022. We’ve had to be flexible, and I think our wedding clients appreciate that. Booking and hosting weddings and working with my wedding clients is one of my favorite
things to do here at Tenth Ward, so I’ve been extremely lucky to keep such great relationships with our COVID-brides and grooms. And since our space is large enough, even at our 50% capacity, we can host up to 75 people, so bring on the small weddings!
BELLWETHER EVENTS Janice Carnevale
So much has changed with wedding planning this year, it could give you whiplash. Obviously, many 2020 clients had to change plans midstream, and those that decided to downsize and proceed had to carefully examine not only the local requirements and restrictions, but also the ethics of moving forward. We had to work with venues and caterers on new procedures and incorporate new elements to help keep guests and vendors safe from load-in through load-out.
are being examined much more closely than ever before, as are event insurance policies, which I think is a good thing for the long term. Getting an in-person tour is harder now, and couples now have to rely more on virtual tours and photos found online – and they have to put their trust in their planner to guide them in the right direction. Having outdoor space was always a bonus for weddings, but now it is almost a must-have. Planning meetings and supplier interviews are now done almost exclusively online, which is something I actually hope sticks around once we are post-Covid-19.

THE PROPOSAL Ryan and Katherine both attended Linganore High School at the same time, but didn’t meet until after graduating, through mutual friends. “We have been together since 2011. We started dating our sophomore year in college,” Katherine said. Ryan proposed during the Christmas season in 2017 with both of their families present. “It was perfect. He strung lights up on the back gate at his parent’s house that said, ‘Will you marry me?’ and had champagne on the table. I was in total shock.” Frederick Weddings 2020

THE WEDDING The couple got married in June 2019 at Rock Creek Farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. One hundred twenty-five guests attended, including a nine-person wedding party. “Our ceremony was short and sweet. A family friend of ours married us, and it was right in front of the pond. It was a beautiful day.” The couple chose a coral and floral theme for their wedding décor. “Rene from Blossom & Basket and my mother really helped with the color scheme and rentals. Having the barn made it laid-back, but also formal. We wanted everyone to have a good time and to be comfortable,” Katherine said. The couple looked at several wedding venues. “We wanted a brewery that had more of a rustic feel, but they never could hold enough people. My mom heard of the venue we chose. It was very new at the time. It was the last one we looked at, and right when we got there, we both knew it was the one. We decided on a June wedding because we are summer people.” Ryan is a digital signal processing engineer and Katherine is a laboratory technician. They reside in Jefferson.

THE PROPOSAL Natalie and Sean met at a Baltimore music festival through mutual friends. “He was dancing and our eyes met. It took everything in my power not to just walk over and kiss him. Somehow I managed to refrain. I found him on Facebook afterward, and we have been together for nine years.” Sean proposed when the two were on vacation in Punta Cana. “It was our first night and after we had dinner, we took a walk up to the beach. He got down on one knee, and I was in sheer disbelief. Once the initial shock wore off, I said yes.” Frederick Weddings 2020

THE WEDDING The couple had 100 guests and a fourperson wedding party for their outdoor wedding nuptials. “Our ceremony was under a large oak tree at Antrim 1844. We had bottles of flowers and candles hanging from the tree, accented in our color palette, and white roses on the left and right sides of the aisle. It was absolutely magical and everything I dreamed of.” Natalie and Season decided to go with “boho chic” for their wedding decor and used a color palette of plum, lavender, chartreuse, and silver. “The biggest draw to Antrim 1844 was the grounds. Once we saw the oak tree and the rose garden, we absolutely fell in love. Not to mention it was all-inclusive and we had the opportunity to design a custom menu with their executive chef.” Natalie is a client technology manager at Helion Technologies and Sean works in quality assurance at Comcast. They currently reside in Dallastown, Pennsylvania.

We were on opposite sides of the photo.” For their first anniversary of dating, the couple traveled to a bed-and-breakfast in West Virginia. “We loved it so much that we promised to come back. For our sixth anniversary, we finally were able to return to that B&B. After a mile hike to the top of a waterfall, we rested for a minute, then decided to take a few selfies. THE WEDDING Jennifer and Dennis had 12 people at their ceremony and 62 people at the reception. “Our ceremony was outside at Cunningham Falls State Park, on the boardwalk in front of the waterfall. It was a small, intimate ceremony, with only our family and a few close friends in attendance. Besides the cold, everything was perfect.” While the couple went for a 1950’s vibe for their wedding attire, their reception was medieval and Renaissance themed. “We dressed the part and we encouraged all of our friends and family to do so, as well. Many of them complied, and it was a magical, crazy affair. There was ax throwing during the cocktail hour, medieval-themed music throughout dinner, but plenty of ’80s and ’90s tunes for dancing. We also had fire spinners to end the night.” Jennifer is a pediatric nurse and Dennis is an acquisition analyst. They live in Rockville.

We also did a short sand ceremony, which included sand from Ocean City, the beach we went to growing up and Marco Island, Florida, our honeymoon spot.” The couple chose a color palette of navy and burgundy for their reception decor. “I think what made our day fun and unique was the people we had there to celebrate with us, as well as stand by our sides. Our wedding party was comprised of our family and closest friends, so they mean everything to us. It was so nice to have our best people standing by our sides to make our day that much more special.” Amanda is a registered nurse and Dan is a concrete contractor. We took communion and lit the unity candle to symbolize the two of us becoming one.” The couple chose a rustic elegant theme for their decor. “We went more with a formal feel. Our color palette was navy, dusty rose, burgundy, and gold. Samuel is a chef and Yomaira is a financial consultant. The couple currently resides in Silver Spring.

In 2018, Mikhail surprised Erin with a stay at the Watergate Hotel in D.C. “I entered the room to scattered rose petals. He took me to Filomena Ristorante for a nice Italian dinner. When we returned to our hotel room he got down on one knee and popped the question.” photo: @daysyfilmphoto
Wedding trends AND TIPS FOR 2021
Weddings are starting to look a bit different and with COVID still in sight for 2021, couples are getting creative with their guest lists due to state restrictions. Here are some helpful tips on downsizing your guest list for your big day. Start with people you cannot imagine your wedding day without, such as those that you know intimately and have been a major part of your lives. Haven’t talked to them in years, or even on a regular basis, cut them! Though easier said than done, it is the easiest ways to get your guest list down. Eliminate plus ones. Make a virtual wedding guest list – livestreaming to include more loved ones at your wedding is becoming a huge trend due to COVID. PLUS, you may have guests who are not comfortable attending a larger event during these times, so giving your guests the option to attend virtually is another great option.

Mike’s proposal began when he surprised Danielle with a date to the Rusty Scupper in the Inner Harbor. He reserved us the most beautiful table overlooking the water and then when dessert came, he fumbled in his coat pocket and he got down on one knee. Our server knew and took pictures as he got down on his knee. And then the whole restaurant started clapping for us. It was perfect.” photo: @valeriemichellephotography
Keep your guest list local. Though traveling is not normally a big deal, during these COVID times, it’s a huge deal. So when making your guest list, keep location in mind.
“The best advice I could possibly give is do not stress about the little things. Nobody, including you, are going to remember what your plates looked like or what type of silverware they used.” -Taylor Kline 61
