Welcome to Thurmont
Mayor John A. Kinnaird Town of Thurmont
Thurmont is known as ‘The Gateway to the Mountains’ for good reason! Our community is located at the base of the Catoctin Mountains and we border two amazing parks and rolling farmland, wineries, and orchards. To the South is Cunningham Falls State Park. This Park features the Revolutionary period Catoctin Furnace Iron Works. One of the original furnace stacks remains along with a reconstructed casting house and the remnants of the Iron Masters home. There is also a large lake offering camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and swimming. The Cunningham Falls are located off of MD Rte 77 and are the highest falls in Maryland. There are ample trails for hiking and several scenic overlooks to enjoy. To the North is the Catoctin Mountain National Park, with plenty of hiking trails, camping, and picnic facilities. This parkland was purchased in 1929 by President Hoover, the property was part of the Catoctin Furnace Iron Works. There are three large “Camps’ in the park featuring log cabins and other amenities including swimming pools and meeting halls, these were constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps crews. Camp Misty Mount has been used by Girl Scouts for many years and welcomes several other organizations throughout the year. Camp Green Top was built to accommodate children with Polio. The camp was originally conceived by President Roosevelt and is the first Federal facility designed to accommodate the handicapped. Greentop features a dozen bunkhouses, a large meeting hall, a dining room, and a swimming pool accessible to wheelchairs. The third camp was originally known as Hi-Catoctin; it was designed as a retreat for government workers. It soon took on a more important role when in 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt converted it to a presidential retreat and renamed it “Shangri-La”. Today the camp’s official name is Naval Support Facility Thurmont but everyone knows it as
Camp David. Over the years a lot of world events have been discussed and agreements hammered out at Camp David. Every President from Franklin Roosevelt to President Biden has used Camp David as a week getaway or as a place to gather world leaders to address international events. Thurmont also features several parks with recreational, walking, and picnicking facilities. We also have the Thurmont Trolley Trail, a mile-long walking and biking trail that follows the old Hagerstown and Frederick Railroad bed from the center of town South to Moser Road. This trail will eventually stretch South to Catoctin Furnace and offer a circular route from Thurmont to Catoctin Furnace, Cunningham Falls Park, Catoctin Mountain Park, and back to Thurmont. If you love crafts, then Colorfest is the event for you! Colorfest is held the second full weekend of October and features hundreds of crafters, food vendors, and yard sales. The event is centered at the Community Park on Frederick Road and spreads out into the community with additional vendors at the American Legion and the Guardian Hose Fire Company Carnival Grounds. The event officially runs from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, but there are hundreds of yard sales during the week leading up to Colorfest. Satellite parking lots with bus service take you directly to the main Colorfest areas during Colorfest. On a typical Colorfest weekend, we get approximately 35,000 visitors each day, sometimes with as many as 45,000 visitors per day. Thurmont is a sleepy little town of 6,800 residents but we offer an amazing array of outdoor activities, great restaurants, and boutique shops. You should visit and see for yourself why 15 United States Presidents have vacationed here and hundreds of thousands of Colorfest visitors, bicyclists, hikers, and nature lovers enjoy visiting Thurmont and our amazing surroundings.
Welcome to Emmitsburg

Welcome to Emmitsburg a place settled in pre-Revolutionary War times. Indeed, history has been very kind and generous to us. Our heritage includes Main Street being a primary western migration route for the early settlers. The place where master craftsman John Armstrong made signature Kentucky Long Rifles at the turn of the nineteenth century. Later to the where thousands of Union soldiers encamped and were nourished before moving on to Gettysburg. The town is the seat of mercy from which the Daughters of Charity went the ensuing days to tend to those wounded in the battle. To the prestige embodied, the town, being recognized as a National Register of Historic Places, has picked up the monikers of “Fire Town” and “Green Town”. It is left to wonder what those who formed our history would say to a town being a regional leader in the use of renewable energy. What we did eight years ago is where most of the country must go. The town has an electric car, four electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, solar powered algae control at the town lake, 94% of our town government energy needs are provided by renewable solar power. But they still would recognize a quiet town idyllically set amid a natural balance of mountains, farm-
land, and streams absorbing what comes its way. Earlier this year Emmitsburg was recognized as being one of the top ten most beautiful small towns in Maryland. Today, unlike in the past, residents go about their “day to days” amidst their daily scurries and interactions at our restaurants, three museums and four archives, the world’s most visited fire house the Vigilant Hose Company, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine and Basilica, the Homeland Security/Fire Academy facility, the Fallen Firefighters Memorial, the Grotto of Lourdes and Mount St. Mary’s University hosting over 400,000 visitors a year. All cylinders running 24/7/365. We welcome you as we do the streams of returning University students, alums, firefighters, and winter season skiers on their way to and from the nearby Ski Liberty. Our history is harrowed deep from what those before us did and left. Like them we are day in, and day out committed to growing the quality of life in Emmitsburg. Emmitsburg, a great place to live, work, and visit. Join us. Your choice, step back in time, follow the wayside exhibits or step into the future forward in a regionally recognized sustainable leading community. Embody it, let its place speak to you.
Stroll quaint streets lined with historic buildings filled with charming boutique shops and trendy restaurants. Embrace the lively and diverse art scene. Escape to picturesque national and state parks in our countryside, experience our storied past at Civil War battlefields, and unwind at our wineries, breweries, and distilleries. You’ll want to stay a while in Frederick, Maryland. visitfrederick.org • 800-999-3613

THURMONT
COLORFEST is Back for 2021! 2020 will certainly be remembered for many life-changing adaptations and cancelations of events due to Covid-19. Thurmont’s Colorfest was no exception, and for the first time in fifty-six years the Colorfest did not happen due to the pandemic. While thousands of festivals were canceled nationally, Colorfest is special and is unlike these other events and festivals that were canceled in 2020. So, what makes Colorfest so unique and special? Colorfest attracts over 100,000 visitors each year making Colorfest one of the largest two-day festivals in the state of Maryland, and is one of the largest outdoor craft shows on the East Coast! That sets Colorfest apart from other events or festivals! This year the Colorfest is back and anxiously awaiting the 100,000 plus who attend each year and enjoy close to 800 vendors with an amazing variety of crafts, art, jewelry, unique household items, delicious food, and much more. full weekend in October. In 2021, Colorfest occurs on October 10 and 11. The entire town along with many non-profit organizations will be gearing up for this year’s amazing event. Vendor craft areas and food are located at the Thurmont Community Park, which is the largest vendor area, coordinated by Catoctin Colorfest, Inc. The Guardian Hose Company carnival grounds located on East Main Street also hosts a large number of vendors, along with delicious food prepared by the volunteers from the Guardian Hose Fire Company. Other vendor and food trucks areas include Criswell Chevrolet on Frederick Road, and the Edwin C. Creeger American Legion Post 168 grounds on Park Lane. The American Legion Post also hosts a beer garden and delicious food! You will also find vendors set up all throughout town and along many of the main streets. If you’re planning to attend Colorfest, we recommend planning ahead, getting here early, and leave

Shuttle buses transport visitors to and from these shuttle parking lots on the perimeter of town into the center of all the action in the downtown areas. Once you have finished all of the fun at Colorfest, be sure to stop by one of our local restaurants, orchards or wineries to finish out your day with a taste of Thurmont! Cunningham Falls State Park has
Enjoy Kayaking on the lake at Cunningham Falls State Park.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! By Edison Hatter Cunningham Falls State Park is located just a stone’s throw away from the Thurmont Town Square in the heart of the beautiful Catoctin Mountains. The Park is divided into two unique areas: the William Houck Area is located on Route 77 and contains the lake, falls, and camping area, while the Manor Area is located off of Route 15 and includes the Scales and Tales Aviary, further camping areas, and the Catoctin Iron Furnace. The Park is open year-round- from 8 a.m. to sunset from April to October and 10 a.m. to sunset from November to March. The Park is picturesque to visit regardless of the time of year; the sparkling snowfall coats the park into a winter wonderland during winter months, the reemergence of life and the blooming of flowers makes for an amazing spring backdrop, the falls provide a great swimming location to cool off during the hot summer, and the foliage in the fall makes for a colorful background. There are so many activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy at Cunningham Falls State Park. The obvious highlight of the park is the Cunningham Falls, which checks in as the highest waterfall in the state of Maryland with an approximate height of 78 feet! Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the park and there are many different hiking trails to explore. Some are short, like the half-mile Lower Trail that is easy to traverse and ends 10

Covered Bridges represent days gone by and are still historical landmarks in several states. At one point in time the state of Maryland had as many as fifty-two covered bridges, and now only six of these iconic structures are still in use. THURMONT TROLLEY TRAIL EXTENSION CONSTRUCTION BEGINS!
HFTTA Stone Dust Bridge Finished Trail.
By Bryant K. Despeaux, President, H&F Trolley Trail Association When we formed the H&F Trolley Trail Association back in 2018, we unrealistically thought we would be building trails in months-- it took a few years, but it is finally happening! Our original plan to construct a trail around the pond on the former Owoyele property, which sits adjacent to the Water Treatment Plant, had to be changed due to a request by the Town of Thurmont. An alternate plan to build a loop trail that connected the Trolley Trail to the Library was conceived and creatively named the Library Loop. This new trail extension will serve two purposes - it will add a loop at the end of the trail making it more interesting than simply turning around and it will also provide direct access to the Thurmont Regional Library from the Trolley Trail. The Town extended the Trolley Trail south from Moser Road to the Pond Property gate. The new Library Loop begins off this section of the trail and runs behind the Thurmont Regional Library, connects to the Library’s nature trail, and then connects the nature trail to the sidewalk on the Thurmont Blvd stub off of Moser Rd. Construction began in earnest in late March with the excavation of the section behind the Library. Rainy weather in March and April delayed construction by a few weeks, but the rear trail section was unofficially completed in mid-May. HFTTA volunteers excavated the trail, laid in geofabric, spread and compacted the sub-base and final stone dust surface. Signs and access bollards were installed on May 16th. Additional amenities are

from Hi-Catoctin, Shangri-La and Camp David By Theresa Pryor Camp David is located sixty miles outside of Washington, D.C. in Catoctin Mountain Park. It is located east of Hagerstown and north of Frederick in the Catoctin Mountains of western Maryland, near the towns of Thurmont and Emmitsburg. Originally known as Hi-Catoctin, President Franklin D. Roosevelt named it “Shangri-La”, taken from the James Hilton novel, The Lost Horizon. Th s fantastical story is about a group of plane-crash survivors who have landed in the mythical and beautiful Shangri-La, a valley hidden deep within the 22

mountains of the Himalayas and when rescued, some didn’t want to leave. Great story, by the way. Roosevelt’s idea for this once rustic wilderness retreat was to build a camp for federal employees and their families, a project completed in 1938 through the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the New Deal. On April 22, 1942, FDR selected it as States Naval installation operated by military personnel. In 1953, Camp David received its present name from President Dwight Eisenhower in honor of his father and grandson, both named David.

Backside of Aspen Cottage the President’s quarters when at Camp David. Photo courtesy of John Kinnaird. Camp David serves presidents and first families as a secluded getaway from the White House. Presidents have also used Camp David as a secluded setting for important, high-level discussions and decision making. For instance, after the failed Bay of Pigs operation in Cuba, President Kennedy invited former President Dwight Eisenhower to Camp David for a private consultation. This was Eisenhower’s fiftieth and final trip to Camp David. While at Camp David, on April 29, 1973, President Richard Nixon asked for the resignations of two top aides, John Ehrlichman and H.R. Haldeman. In the days immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush hosted key members of his cabinet and national security team at Camp David to strategize. President Bush convened numerous meetings and discussions during his time there, engaged in private reflection away from the press corps, and attended Sunday church service at the grounds of Evergreen chapel. Many other historic decisions were made, or almost made, by Presidents at Camp David. Jimmy Carter initially favored closing Camp David in order to save money. Once Carter actually visited the retreat, he decided to keep it and brokered the Camp David Accords there in September 1978
between Egyptian president Anwar al-Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin. Ronald Regan visited the retreat more than any other president. In 1984, Reagan hosted British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Reagan also restored the nature trails that Nixon paved over so he could horseback ride at Camp David. George H.W. Bush’s daughter, Dorothy was married there in 1992, in the first wedding held at Camp David. During his tenure as president, Bill Clinton spent every Thanksgiving at Camp David with his family. In July 2000, he hosted the 2000 Camp David Summit negotiations between Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat. The camp is reportedly one of the most secure facilities in the world, as reported by a Department of Defense journal in 1998. The facility is guarded by one of the United States Marine Corps’ most elite units, MSCCD (Marine Security Company, Camp David). Each Marine is selected from the infantry and sent through a battery of psychological and physical tests. He then must undergo specialized security training at the Marine Corps Security Forces School, in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Marines then report to Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. Assuming the Marines successfully complete all their schooling, they still must, like their Navy counterparts, attain “Yankee White” security clearance. Only then will the Marines be eligible for the assignment at Camp David. After 12 months of service at Camp David, a Marine is awarded the Presidential Service Badge. Typically, tours at Camp David are 18-24 months. For a great read and an interesting inside view, Rear Admiral Michael Giorgione’s book, “Inside Camp David: The Private World of the Presidential Retreat,” offers details that could surprise even the most avid Frederick County historians. In 278 pages, Giorgione weaves palace intrigue, personal reflections from former commanding officers at the camp and histories of the retreat and Thurmont, including a tidbit about how the town was nearly named Blue Mountain City. SKATEPARK Alan Chimel, Patrick Dugan, Maceo Zelenka & Norman Montoya, Thurmont Skatepark Committee founders, leaders, skaters. Skateboarding is the fastest growing sport in America! More and more folks from all walks of life are skateboarding. Skateboarding is a fun way to get exercise, fresh air, release stress and express yourself. In 2020 skateboarding saw its largest increase in popularity in twenty years. Last year many skateboard shops saw their busiest year ever. Some of skate boarding’s rise in popularity stems from covid and folks being quarantined. Skateboarding allows riders to get exercise and have fun together while still keeping a safe distance. Many found skateboarding to be a savior after being isolated and feeling disconnected and depressed. Skating provides riders with the opportunity to relieve stress and feel a sense of normalcy during a difficult time. Skateboarding is a wonderful outdoor activity for people of all ages, physical conditions and socioeconomic backgrounds. It involves no TV, no computer, no electronics and best of all, Skateboarders are outside getting fresh air and exercise. Skateboarding allows riders to test their skills and raise their spirits benefiting them both physically and emotionally. Thurmont has a fast-growing number of skaters enjoying the sport, but the town was unfortunately lacking a safe place to gather. With the increasingly growing number of skaters across the country, there is a growing number of skateparks being built. The Town of Thurmont is no exception and is stepping up to the demand and building a skatepark to provide a fun and safe place for both resident and visiting skaters. The decision for Thurmont to build a skatepark stemmed from
a group of young local skaters who used their voices in a positive and powerful way. Fifteen high school sophomores attended a Thurmont town meeting and pleaded their case to the mayor and commissioners. The town representatives were quite impressed with this group of young citizens. In the past others have complained about not having a skatepark in Thurmont but these teens were the first to approach the mayor and commissioners during a meeting with a powerful case to build a skatepark. The commissioners were persuaded by the teens and voted unanimously to build them a skatepark. Immediately following the meeting, the teens formed a committee to begin planning the Thurmont Skatepark. The group of teens has consulted with several skatepark designers, builders and organizers. They have learned about what works well and what does not. One fun aspect of the planning process has been taking field trips to other skateparks. The most rewarding part of the process so far for the teens has been expressing themselves and having their voices heard. The Thurmont Skatepark will be constructed of concrete and will be built by a skater owned company. It will be approximately 50’x 80’ and will be located in the East End Park. The skatepark will welcome all residents and visitors and there will be no admission charge. The Park will be geared toward all skill levels from beginner to pro. There will also be a small set of bleachers for family members and fans to watch the skaters test their tricks and strut their stuff
The Thurmont Skatepark plans to break ground and open this fall. The grand opening celebration will be a skate jam with live music from the Frederick Rock School and of course lots of skateboarding. There will also be some pro skaters in attendance who will be skating, giving pointers and signing autographs. Thurmont is a beautiful mountain town with so much to offer. Visitors always enjoy touring the covered bridges, hiking the numerous mountain trails, swimming in the lake, wine tasting and so much more,,, and now to top it off… KATEBOARDING! Campers at Cunningham Falls will have just a short drive down the scenic mountain road to experience one of Maryland’s best skateparks. We look forward to seeing you at the Thurmont Skatepark…Skateway to the Mountains.

Thurmont to Host 2021
Little League State Tournament By Jim Humerick, Chief Administrative Officer – Town of Thurmont The Thurmont Little League has been selected to be the host site for the 2021 Little League Intermediate Division (11–13-year-olds) State Tournament. The tournament will be held July 10-16, with games taking place throughout the days. The Town of Thurmont has been meeting with Keith Myers, President of Thurmont Little League to effectively plan for this prestigious event. The tournament games will be held on the East End Park baseball field behind the Thurmont Police station. Up to 6 teams will be competing for the state championship and will be bringing many players, coaches, families, and fans into Thurmont. The Town of Thurmont Department of Public Works is working with the Thurmont Little League in upgrading the field and surrounding areas in time for the tournament. A new earthen pitcher’s mound will replace the existing portable mound. New infield dirt will be spread on the field, along with and new home plate and new bases. Mayor John Kinnaird stated “This is a wonderful accomplishment for Thurmont Little League. We’re very proud to have the tournament here in Thurmont and we’re going to make sure that the town and our baseball fields are shining brightly for the rest of the state of Maryland!” Residents should be aware that there will be additional parking restrictions in place along Westview Drive during the tournament. Thurmont Police Chief Gregory Eyler has recommended that parking only be allowed on one side of Westview Drive, adjacent to the park and the fields. This will allow for safe accessibility along the street for local traffic, as well as emergency vehicles. Parking in the Thurmont Senior Center parking lot will be restricted to handicapped parking and tournament officials.

Colorful Creations Come to Frederick County
Downtown Frederick Art Sculpture.
Middletown Main Street Sculpture.
Thurmont Main Street Sculpture.
By Vickie Grinder Frederick County Maryland is home to five designated Maryland Main Street Communities and are also accredited National Main Streets under the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. These five Main Street communities include Brunswick, Downtown Frederick, New Market, Middletown, and Thurmont. These five Main Street communities collaborated on a public, temporary art display titled “Art on Main” to celebrate their towns with a unique tailor-made tile sculpture crafted by Maryland artist and ceramicist, Parran Collery to reflect the distinctive landscapes of each town. This project persevered through a pandemic with design and installation of all five sculptures. What’s interesting about these five sculptures is that every decorative tile incorporated into the sculptures were created by residents of each community. Artist Parren Collery had scheduled workshops in April 2020 in each of the five communities to create the tiles to be installed into the sculptures, but then came the pandemic shutdown. At that point, Parren made clay kits complete with paints with an instructional video and were distributed to each town. Residents carved out the clay tiles to reflect their own individual art, and were returned to Parren to be fired in her kiln and created these colorful creations! A big shout out to Frederick County Tourism/visitfrederick.org, for the funding provided to make this collaboration a reality! Be sure to visit each Main Street to see the exclusive sculptures and explore how unique each of these Maryland Main Street Communities really are! New trail at Eyler Road Park.
Improvements to Several Thurmont Trails
By Jim Humerick, Chief Administrative Officer – Town of Thurmont Thanks to grant funding from the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources’ Program Open Space grants, there has been some great trail improvements completed recently in Thurmont. The recent acquisition of a 10.09 acre parcel of future parkland near the wastewater treatment plant created an opportunity to continue with the extension of the extremely popular Thurmont Trolley Trail. Town of Thurmont Streets and Parks Dept. staff graded and installed the gravel base for a 350’ long and 8’ wide trail connecting to the existing Thurmont Trolley Trail off of Moser Road. The new trail extension runs parallel with the roadway and stops for now, at the entrance to the 10.09 acre parcel. The park site will be constructed in the future and is planned to have amenities to include additional trails, a wetlands observation area, boardwalk, and more. The Town of Thurmont is working with Frederick County in the future planning to extend this trail into the county, eventually connecting to the Catoctin Furnace and possible sites to the south from there. This section is the first phase in making
the connection to the county. Asphalt work on this section of trail was completed by the American Asphalt Company from Baltimore. Trail lighting to match the existing lighting currently along the Trolley Trail is planned for the future. Volunteers from the Hagerstown & Frederick Trolley Trail Association (HFTTA) constructed the new “Library Loop Trail” connecting the Thurmont Regional Library to the new trail extension. An existing nature trail that was previously constructed by the SUCCESS program makes a great connection tying everything together. Now trail users can traverse the .77 mile Thurmont Trolley Trail, cross Moser Road to the new extension, turn onto the Library Loop Trail and connect back to the Thurmont Trolley Trail, while learning about the interesting natural items all along the nature trail. Another exciting project has been the construction of the new exercise trail at Eyler Road Park. The .51 mile trail circles the entire perimeter of the front section of the park. Once again, Town of Thurmont Streets and Parks Dept. staff graded the entire length of the trail and installed the stone base. Town staff also
constructed three foot bridges and installed new trees along the trail. The work that was performed by staff members Tim Eyler, Colby Savage, Donnie Kaas, and Greg Andrew was nothing short of exemplary. Just as was the case with the Trolley Trail Extension, asphalt was installed by the American Asphalt Company. The exercise trail has been a project that many residents and visitors have been anticipating. The project has been so anticipated that the trail was being used before the stone base was installed! “Every time I go past Eyler Road Park, I always see folks using the trail. They were even using it when it was dirt!” said Thurmont Planning and Zoning Manager Kelly Duty. “I’m really pleased to see how much everyone enjoys it”. While these trails may currently be located on opposite sides of the town’s municipal borders and miles apart, plans are already underway to connect them. The town and HFTTA are working on acquiring funding to make this happen! The Town of Thurmont Comprehensive Plan prioritizes pedestrian connectivity very high on the list of the town’s future goals and objectives. These projects have made great strides in achieving these aspirations! S U M M E R 2 0 2 1 | G AT E WAY

HELP US HELP YOU! The Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service is one service many people take for granted until they need emergency assistance. The dedicated men and women who provide this service stand ready, willing, and able to respond. While many of us hope we never need to call upon the fire and rescue service, we should take a moment and appreciate their efforts and dedication. The twenty-five volunteer fire and rescue departments and associated special operations teams are actively seeking volunteer members to assist with operational and administrative duties. Times have changed. Fewer people live and work in the same community and the availability of volunteers willing to commit time to the fire service is declining nationally. If you’re looking for a challenge, want to develop friendships, do something rewarding, serve your community, or help your neighbors in their time of need, WE need your help!!! No experience is necessary and training is free! If you’re interested in volunteering, we need your help sign up today!

FIRE MUSEUM
to Open Later This Summer
New wayfaring exhibit in front of the etched mural.
By Chip Jewell The Frederick County Fire & Rescue Museum located at 300B South Seton Ave. in Emmitsburg is hoping to re-open to the after July 1. The museum will feature new displays such as an impressive 8-foot-long panoramic picture of all the fire apparatus in the city of Frederick in 1932 as the painting by Sherry Kemp donated by the Junior Fire Company of the 1910 American LaFrance steamer responding from the Junior fire house. The new wayfaring sign describing the William Cochran glass etching “Volunteer” has recently been added next to the
etching to provide the visitor an excellent pictorial of how the etching finally came to be in Emmitsburg and the difficult worked faced by Emmitsburg Glass Company to both dismantle and reinstall the glass. New signage providing the visitor with a look back in history to the origin of the “Old Lady” hand tub pumper and recent information of the metal tank that was believed owned by the Washington Hose Company in Frederick have been added
to provide an even greater depth history. Plans are being made to reopen the museum to the public after July 1 that will feature a book signing by Chip Jewell, the museum president and author of the new book History of Fire Companies in Frederick County, Maryland. The Frederick County Fire & Rescue Museum looks forward to once again providing visitors with a look back in the history of our Frederick County fire and rescue companies.

The Seton Center
A Guiding Light for a Better Tomorrow
The Seton Center located at 226 Lincoln Ave, Emmitsburg, MD.
Founded in 1969, Seton Center, Inc. was established by the Daughters of Charity at the request of the people of the Emmitsburg area. Three mothers approached the Sisters to express their need for quality day care, which would enable them to work and support their families while their children received safe, adequate care, and developmental enrichment. In 1970, the licensed Seton Day Care was opened, followed by the addition of social and nationally-recognized educational services. The Thrift Store also opened in 1970, which is now called Seton Family Store. To accommodate the demand for expanded services, the Seton Center moved to their new building at 226 East Lincoln Avenue in 2018. Today, their Outreach Office continues to offer hope to the under-resourced neighbors in our valley; from emergency, short-term assistance with financial needs to life-changing programs for long-term success. Emergency material assistance, referrals, workshops, the Getting Ahead and DePaul Dental programs. The Seton Center’s Workforce Development strategic plan and program includes a commitment to: providing learning opportunities for job seekers to search for employment, write a resume and interview like a pro by collaborating with local employers in matching their needs with local talent supporting local businesses in understanding the issues of poverty and how they can be an active part of the solutions. Last but certainly not least, the newly remodeled Seton Family Store offers a wide range of new and lightly used items at low prices. One hundred percent of Family Store sale proceeds directly fund the Outreach Office programs and services. The Family Store is open for retail sales Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and available to accept donations of clothing, household goods and collectibles on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday,9:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Make plans to stop in and shop next time you are in Emmitsburg, you will be amazed at all they have to offer!
