Songs of the Season

Support small businesses this holiday season While the holiday season is important for small businesses every year, now is the time to support small businesses more than ever. Here are ways you can help. Shop in person.

If you’re healthy and comfortable visiting local stores, consider making the trip instead of buying online from the big e-commerce sites for at least some of your gifts. After all, many of our small shops offer unique items you won’t find on the big websites.

Shop small businesses online.

Many small businesses increased their e-commerce capabilities to generate revenue over the last year. Those concerned about shopping in person this season should explore the delivery and curbside pickup options available at locally-owned small businesses. Even businesses that have not traditionally been allowed to deliver, such as breweries and wineries, have been able to do so since the pandemic began.

Buy local gift cards.

Gift cards take the guesswork out of holiday shopping, and they’re easily shipped or emailed to loved ones. That’s a significant benefit during the holiday season, especially when delivery times are expected to be lengthy. Gift cards to local businesses simplify shopping, support small businesses and help shoppers avoid potential delivery delays.

Order holiday meals.

Save yourself the time prepping and cooking this year’s holiday feasts by ordering from a local restaurant. If the restaurant does not deliver, chances are you can pick up curbside. Even if there are some homemade culinary traditions you don’t want to give up, consider ordering part of the meal, such as dessert from a local bakery.

Share your experience.

Word-of-mouth is vital to small businesses at any time and can be especially valuable. On social media, share information about the lengths local small businesses have gone to in regard to safety measures, order fulfillment and their delivery and pickup efforts. This could encourage neighbors and friends to follow your lead and provide support to local businesses this holiday season.

Handcrafted honeycomb earrings and necklaces By LAUREN LAROCCA llarocca@newspost.com

Brian Slagle’s fascination with honeybees started when he met an old beekeeper in Savannah who kept an observation hive in his dining room. “I just became obsessed,” Slagle remembers. “Then I read ‘The Life of the Honeybee,’ and it blew my mind … that there’s this power greater than ourselves that tells the queen bee what to do and when. Lately, it’s been all I can think about, this connection between spirituality and honeybees.” While playing around with sheets of perforated steel that resemble honeycomb patterns, Slagle, a longtime sculptor in Frederick, realized he could make jewelry from it. Within a week, he had a small company up and running, with orders coming in for his honeycomb earrings and necklaces. The pieces are handmade in downtown Frederick with polished steel and come in a handful of variations and price points. His grandfather, an architect and jeweler, was one of his earliest inspirations. “I would sit in his shop for hours and watch him polish gemstones and make stuff,” he said. “I found an old box where he had instructions to make this really fancy king’s chain bracelet, so I made one of those for my wife. I feel like I’m full-on sitting in his shop when I was 6 when I’m sitting in my shop now. It’s kind of come full-circle. … The jewelry thing is definitely in my bones somewhere.”

Santa’s Scout Activity Kit By PATRICK KERNAN pkernan@newspost.com

It’s been a busy year for Michelle Budd. The last time the News-Post spoke with her, she had just debuted Santa’s Scout, a cuddly toy reindeer who finds the homes of good children on Christmas Eve for Santa. Since then, Santa’s Scout has won awards and received some national recognition, and Budd, who is based in New Market, said she’s working on the next steps for the project. Budd’s toy creation grew out of a story her family told when she was a child about a reindeer who scouts out locations for Santa’s sleigh. She made this idea tangible when she authored a children’s book about Santa’s Scout, which comes packaged with a plush version of the character and a light-up star to put in the window to attract Santa’s attention. The toy kit debuted on the market last holiday season, and Budd said the response has been incredible since then. “We’ve received quite a bit of recognition,” she said while at the Pennsylvania Christmas and Gift Show in Harrisburg. Perhaps the biggest recognition was Santa’s Scout winning a Mom’s Choice Award. According to the Mom’s Choice Awards’ website, the organization gives awards of excellence to toys and other products designed specifically for children, as judged by a panel on a variety of criteria. “It’s a very select submission group that gets chosen, so that was a really big deal for me,” she said. Santa’s Scout was also featured by a number of media outlets, in addition to the NewsPost, which Budd said helped drive a large number of sales, and the toy also made an appearance at the Maryland Christmas Show, held at the Frederick County Fairgrounds in the final weeks of November. “We’ve had the chance to touch thousands of kids and families,” she said. Budd, in some ways, thinks the pandemic may have caused people to want a new tradition like Santa’s Scout. She thinks people

Budd has big plans for the toy, including getting it into brick-and-mortar retail shops and more projects with the character of Santa’s Scout. For now, Budd said she’s thrilled by the response, saying it makes her speechless. “It’s hard to express. It’s truly gratifying on so many levels. It means a lot to me to bring joy to

Giving unique gifts for the holiday season

TikTok made you buy it A selection of viral, gifty finds

By LEANNE ITALIE AP ENTERTAINMENT WRITER

Look no further than TikTok and its pandemic-expanded ranks for unique holiday gifts, from the hot Halara athleisure dress to a miracle cleaning paste called The Pink Stuff, worthy of any neat freak’s Christmas stocking. The short-form video platform was a hit for millions during quarantine times, and the hashtag TikTokMadeMeBuyIt endures. The hashtag has been viewed more than 5.6 billion times, driving TikTok to boost its direct shopping tools. There’s something for everybody down that yellow brick road for the holidays. THE PINK STUFF

The basic ingredients in this all-purpose cleaning paste are baking soda, quartz, sodium silicate and soap, lending an abrasive feel. It’s a stocking stuffer extraordinaire for uber-cleaners and the rest of us who don’t want to break a sweat. Fans on TikTok are most impressed by its muscle on built-up greasy things. There’s a bathroom foam cleanser and multipurpose spray cleaner as well. Best part: It’s only $8.15 on Amazon for 17.6 ounces.

THE ALMOND COW

Plant-based everything is the rage, and that’s everpresent when it comes to milk. This carafe requires nuts to be thrown into the base, water to be added, a button to be pressed and voila, 5 to 6 cups of frothy almond milk. It automatically separates the milk from the pulp. Users can add coconut, dates or whatever extra ingredients they like. It takes just a minute with no mess and easy cleanup. The milk lasts three to five days in the fridge. The magic extends to cocktails, creamers, dressings, soups and more. It goes for $195. Available on Almondcow.co.

THE MOBOT

Speaking of hydration, another water bottle called the Mobot doubles as a BPA-free massage foam roller for aching muscles. They’re constructed from recycled stainless steel in sizes with catchy names: Big Bertha at 40 ounces, Grace at 27 ounces and the Firecracker at 18 ounces. There are some fun patterns and colors, including the fruity style called Juicybot. Actress Lucy Hale never leaves home without one. Prices range from $39.99 to $59.99. Buy at Mobot.com. Also available on Amazon and Nordstrom.com.

THE CIRKUL

Created by two former football players at Dartmouth who wanted to improve their hydration, the Cirkul water bottles and their flavor cartridges allow users to ramp up or tone down the taste with the turn of a dial. Cartridges come in more than 40 no-sugar, no-calorie, all-natural flavors, including ice coffees and teas. The bottles are customizable in a range of sizes in BPA-free plastic and stainless steel. $30 for a 22-ounce plastic bottle and four cartridges. Available on drinkcirkul.com.

THE HALARA

Nothing says viral quite like the sporty, ultra-popular Halara dress, specifically the tank-top version that comes in a range of colors and sizes up to 3X. It’s called the In My Feels Everyday Dress-Wannabe, and it includes attached shorts and handy pockets. It’s super soft and stretchy. The brand followed up with the In My Feels Everyday Chill Dress-La La Land, a version with a midi slit skirt. The tennis-looking original sells for $49.95. The newer one goes for $44.95. Both are available on Halara.com.

THE POP ITS

TikTok drove hordes to scoop up silicone toys with bubbles that make a popping sound. While not as satisfying as bubble wrap itself, people went crazy for them as the fidget toy trend spread last summer. Warning: The noise may be annoying in class now that schools are back in session. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and from numerous companies. Some experts believe kids with ADHD, anxiety, autism and other disorders can benefit from these and other fidgets. The company that makes the Pop Its! brand is coming out with Star Wars, Marvel and Disney characters in time for the holidays at $9.99 each. Look for them at Target, Walmart and Amazon.

THE WORK ROBE

With so many people still working from home, toponly dressing remains a thing. The WorkRobe, as thousands of TikTokers have noted, just makes comfy sense. It’s a belted women’s robe that looks like a Zoom-worthy top in three styles: button-down collared, cross-over blouse and cowl neck. It even has cuffs. There are black, white and gray options. The robe sells for $70. Shop at Myworkrobe.com.
