Holidays at Home do more with your decor

Create a Christmas Village

A

miniature Christmas village is the perfect decorative piece to add to your home for the holidays. Here are a few tips to help you create an enchanting display your whole family will love. The components Take some time to consider what elements will make up your village before you go out to buy any. For example, you’ll want to opt for figurines and buildings from the same brand to ensure everything is proportional. Be sure to include: • Moving parts. Animated features such as a skating rink, cable car, train, windmill or merry-go-round will bring your village to life and draw the eye to various sections. • Infrastructure. Streets, bridges and walls will provide structure and help you organize buildings logically. • Accessories. Benches, fire hydrants, street lamps, trees, flagpoles, birds and other details are essential to create a realistic display.

The assembly First, you need to choose a spot for your village, such as under the Christmas tree or on a fireplace mantel. The location should give you enough room to create depth and varying heights in your display. If certain features need to be plugged in, make sure there’s an electrical outlet nearby. To maximize your village’s wow factor, test out several configurations with the lighting turned on and choose the option that

best showcases each element. Use risers, boxes or books to elevate sections of the village as needed. Once you’ve settled on the layout, add the streets, artificial snow and accessories. If there are wires, make sure they’re hidden. Finally, place the figurines near street lamps or illuminated buildings so they’re visible in the evening, too. If some areas of the village are in shadow, add a miniature spotlight or a tiny strand of string lights.

6 Decorating Tips

1

Holiday timeline If you keep holiday photo cards each year, put them in chronological order and hang them from a piece of garland from the mantel or drape them on a staircase banister. This can be a fun way to see how your own children or other members of the family have grown.

2

Make mini evergreen displays Clip your favorite pieces of evergreen and push the stems into floral foam. Display in small vases or other containers and place in groupings reminiscent of an evergreen forest.

3

Plan the outside It can be overwhelming trying to visualize your outdoor display without a plan in place. Take a photo of the house and map out where you want lights and decorations to go. Then, with your map in hand, you can more readily purchase supplies and start decorating.

4

Go for a specific natural color scheme If you want an overall holiday feel but aren’t interested in Santa figurines or kitschy elements, decorating with color in mind can be key. It’s easy to tie things together with some natu-

Storage Hacks Are you tired of untangling Christmas lights and trying to salvage squashed ornaments when you decorate for the holidays? Try these storage tips. >> Insert strands of Christmas tree beads into separate plastic bottles. >> W rap string lights around pieces of cardboard or empty wrapping paper rolls.

>> Thread rolls of ribbon onto a paper towel holder.

>> Place small Christmas tree

ornaments in egg cartons. >> B undle wrapping paper rolls in a garment bag. >> H ang wreaths on hangers in a closet. Once your decorations are organized, stow them in clear plastic bins so you can easily see what’s inside. Remember to label each container.

5 GETTY

ral elements in your desired palette. For example, white, gold and green make a beautiful combination. Put boxwood clippings and white amaryllis flowers together. Pine cones, twigs and holly pieces also can add festive touches to mantels, doorways and table centerpieces.

Ornaments elsewhere Who says ornaments should only go on a tree? Display antique or favorite ornaments by hanging them from ribbons throughout the home. Be sure to place them where pets can’t get at them, though.

6

Scent the scene Hang something aromatic on the tree to mingle with the pine scent. Fresh cinnamon sticks tied with twine or ribbon can be nestled among the boughs. Use pine cone candles and use pine or cinnamon scents to make them smell just like the season.

7 Tips for a Happy Virtual Holiday

T

he 2020 holiday season will be vastly different from seasons past. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many events have been reimagined as virtual celebrations because of social distancing protocols. For those with large families or people with inherent risk factors that make them more susceptible to illness, sharing the holidays over video conferencing apps may be the safest way to go in 2020. The following tips can help holiday hosts make the most of a virtual gathering.

1

Choose a bright, festive spot Set up your tablet, smartphone or computer in a bright area with a festive backdrop. You’ll want others who join the virtual hangout to be able to see you clearly. A Christmas tree or a decorated fireplace in the background can set the scene.

2

Choose the right conferencing app Certain programs may work better than others depending on your needs. For example, if everyone has

I

aging others to do the same—when you are not speaking will limit the amount of background noise. As the host, serve as the moderator and encourage everyone to speak one at a time. Choose a visual cue to signal when someone has the floor to speak, such as raising a hand or even showing a festive picture.

6 the same operating system platform (iOS or Android), you may be able to use an app inherent to that system, which won’t require a separate download or login. Apps also may be chosen depending on how many people can be invited in, as some set limits. Do your homework and conduct a test run prior to the holidays.

3

Keep props nearby If the goal is to open gifts virtually, be sure to have everyone gath-

ered and the presents nearby so no one is scrambling in and out of view.

4

Position the camera at eye level Try to set up the camera so you’re not looking up or down. Practice looking straight into it instead of at yourself in the minimized window or other people on the screen. This way, you’ll appear engaged.

5

Use mute Muting yourself—and encour-

Tune into virtual worship While some places of worship have reopened to some capacity, others may still be offering hybrid services. If your place of worship holds services via YouTube or another video platform, gather around and watch together and participate as if you were there in person. Better yet, share the link with other family and friends so they can tune in as well.

7

Share dinner ‘together’ Set up your camera source so it captures the holiday table. All parties gathering virtually can then sit down to the holiday meal as one and enjoy one of the season’s more endearing traditions.

~How to Support Those in Isolation~

solation and feelings of loneliness can affect anyone who normally suffers from cabin fever. However, this year it may be more pronounced, as it could be coupled with social distancing precautions that have already been in effect for some time. >> Schedule video chats. Video conferencing apps have become the communication vehicles of choice during the era of social distancing. Different applications and services continue to evolve and help people

stay in touch. Plan regular chats— once or twice per week—with isolated or vulnerable people. Try to organize a large group chat on the holiday itself so no one has to spend Christmas or Hanukkah alone. >> Drop off supplies. Even though supermarket shop-from-home and other delivery services have normalized somewhat since the start of the pandemic, treat individuals who may be isolated to some personalized attention. Put together care packages

of supplies or holiday treats and deliver them in person. Be sure to wear a mask. >> Send uplifting messages. Children—and even adults—can make personalized cards and mail them to loved ones at home or those who may be in long-term care facilities. Send new mailings every week or two so that residents always have something to look forward to in the mail. >> Start a virtual club. A book club or another shared interest can be the

catalyst for more frequent communication. A club puts everyone on the same page and enables them to come together, via phone or video chat, for a discussion. >> Learn a new skill together. Instructions on everything from woodworking to crochet to making favorite holiday recipes can be found online. Join an isolated individual daily by engaging with him or her in virtual lessons. Sharing this experience can provide purpose and distraction.

Holiday recipes eat. drink. be merry.

Cioppino

Egg Nog

Many families gather around the dinner table and enjoy seafood on Christmas Eve. Called the Feast of the Seven Fishes, this tradition traces its origins to Italy and was brought over to North America by Italian immigrants. While people can enjoy seven entirely different seafood options, it also is customary to serve one or two types of fish seven different ways. This recipe for Cioppino from “Soup’s On” (Chronicle Books) by Leslie Jonath and Frankie Frankeny manages to include seven types of seafood. (Serves 4) • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling • 1 white onion, chopped • 1/2 cup thinly sliced leeks, white part only • 4 garlic cloves • 6 anchovy fillets or 2 tablespoons anchovy paste • 1/3 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley • 4 sprigs fresh marjoram • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes • 1 live Dungeness crab (2 to 2 1\2 pounds), cleaned and sectioned, crab fat reserved • 8 ounces lingcod or other white fish • 1 cup dry white wine • 1 1/2 cups tomato puree or peeled, fresh whole tomatoes • 8 ounces clams, well scrubbed • 4 ounces mussels, scrubbed and debearded • 8 ounces raw prawns or large shrimp, peeled and deveined • 8 ounces calamari • Kosher or sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper

Warm the oil in a heavy, nonreactive pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion, leeks and garlic and sautee until the garlic is golden. Add the anchovies, parsley, marjoram and pepper flakes and stir to mix. Add the crab and fish and cook until the fish begins to fall apart, 7 to 10 minutes. Add the wine and cook to reduce the liquid by one-third. Mix together the reserved crab fat, 1 cup water and the tomato puree in a small bowl. Add to the pot, raise the heat to high, and bring to a boil. Add the clams, mussels and prawns and cook until the clam and mussel shells begin to open and the prawns turn pink, approximately 3 minutes. Discard any clams or mussels that do not open. Add the calamari and cook until opaque, approximately 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle into soup bowls and drizzle with olive oil. Serve immediately with a green salad, crusty country bread and white wine.

(Makes 1 cocktail) Rum, whiskey and brandy are customary liquors to use in eggnog recipes. However, The Spruce: Eats, a culinary website, has taste-tested them all and believes brandy tops the others for the perfect finished product. Enjoy their version of “Quick Brandy Eggnog.” • 1 ounce brandy • 1 1/4 ounces milk • 1/2 ounce simple syrup • 1 egg yolk • Grated nutmeg or cinnamon for garnish In a cocktail shaker, combine the brandy, milk, simple syrup and egg yolk. Dry shake without ice. Fill shaker with ice, then shake vigorously for about 30 seconds to ensure the egg is well mixed. Strain into an old-fashioned or cocktail glass. Add a dash of grated nutmeg or cinnamon as a garnish. Note: Only use a fresh egg. Test the egg’s freshness by placing it in a glass of water. If the egg floats, discard it, as this indicates the egg is too old. Only use eggs that rest on the bottom of the glass. This will ensure the most flavorful drink and helps to reduce the risk of salmonella poisoning.

Beef Roast

(Makes 6 servings) Utilizing a slow cooker to make a beef roast reduces time spent in the kitchen, giving hosts more opportunities to mingle with their guests. That’s just the idea behind this recipe for “Beef Roast With Dark Rum Sauce” from “Crock•Pot 356 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd) by Crock•Pot Kitchens. • 1 teaspoon ground allspice • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves • 1 beef rump roast (about 3 pounds) • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 cup dark rum, divided • 1/2 cup beef broth • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 whole bay leaves, broken in half • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar • 1/4 cup lime juice In a small bowl, combine allspice, salt, pepper and cloves. Rub spices onto all sides of roast. Heat oil in skillet over medium heat until hot. Sear beef on all sides, turning as it browns. Transfer to a slow cooker. Add 1/2 cup rum, broth, garlic and bay leaves. Cover. Cook on low 1 hour. In a small bowl, combine remaining 1/2 cup rum, brown sugar and lime juice, stirring well. Pour over roast. Continue cooking on low 4 to 6 hours, or until beef is fork-tender. Baste beef occasionally with sauce. Remove and slice roast. Spoon sauce over beef to serve.

Spiked with paprika, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and Parmesan cheese, this warm spinach and crab dip has a deeply savory flavor, and thanks to a thickened milk mixture and a modest amount of cream cheese, it is delightfully creamy without being heavy or overly rich. Serve it with a variety of crisp, cut vegetables, crackers or baguette slices, and watch it be devoured. (8 to 12 servings) • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the baking dish • 1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, defrosted • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup low-fat milk • 1 stalk celery, finely diced • 1/4 cup finely diced shallot (about 2 medium shallots) • 1 clove garlic, minced or finely grated • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 3 ounces cream cheese • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1/2 cup (1 1/2 ounces) grated Parmesan cheese • 12 ounces lump crabmeat, drained and picked over to remove any cartilage Preheat the oven to 400 degrees with the rack in the middle. Lightly oil a shallow 1-quart baking dish.

Place the spinach in a colander or fine-mesh strainer and, using your hands, squeeze out as much water as you can. In a small bowl, whisk the flour into the milk until dissolved. In a medium skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil until shimmering. Add the celery and shallot and cook, stirring, until softened but not brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the garlic, paprika, salt and pepper and cook, stirring, until aromatic, 30 seconds more. Stir in the milk mixture and cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil. Add the cream cheese and cook, whisking frequently, until the cheese has melted. Remove from the heat. Stir in the mustard, Worcestershire sauce and half of the Parmesan. Add the spinach and crab and stir until everything is combined. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish, sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan, and bake for about 25 minutes, until bubbling and browned on top. Let rest for about 5 minutes before serving. –Ellie Krieger, The Washington Post

What to Get Teens

GETTY

Home Improvement Gifts

>> Gadgets

Teens like staying abreast of the latest technology, and what better way to do that than with hot-off-the-assembly-line products? Moderns teens use multiple mobile devices—from tablets to smartphones to notebook computers —so an outlet multiplier with surge protection could be the way to go. A charging caddy that keeps all of their devices organized and within reach while replenishing the batteries is another go-to gift. While shopping for gadgets, think about investing in Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or overthe-ear headphones. This way, teens can enjoy their favorite streaming music or binge Netflix without disturbing others.

>> Gym equipment

Adolescents are conscious of their personal health and body image. To foster positive experiences, gift givers can encourage healthy physical activity. A gym membership or personal fitness equipment can help them get on track with a weekly regimen.

>> Luggage/travel gear

A thirst for exploration may inspire teens to travel the country or the world when the pandemic ends. A high-quality piece of luggage can be a building block for travel gear. Other

travel items to consider are RFID blocker ID and credit card holders, money toward a passport or an overnight toiletries bag.

>> Gaming

Many teens immerse themselves in gameplay, whether solo or online multiplayer. Games can be enjoyed while using various consoles, computers and even smartphones. Find out which platform teens are using and then purchase gift cards, points or e-codes so that they can get new games or enjoy in-app purchases and upgrades.

>> School funding

Some gifts can focus on the future, including teens’ education. Consider donating to or opening up an account to help fund college expenses. Different plans have different annual contribution limits and tax deferments, so it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to figure out which avenue is right for you and your gift recipient.

>> Retailer gift cards

Teenagers always enjoy some extra purchasing power, so gift cards to their favorite retailers are likely to be a hit. If you’re not sure where the teen on your list shops, consider a gift card good for a local store.

As people have spent more time at home in 2020 than they likely have in years past, many have had time to ponder potential upgrades to their homes. Gifts that cater to projects around the house are likely to be highly valued this holiday season. Home improvement retailer gift card: Home improvement centers are one-stop shopping for do-it-yourselfers. To help offset the cost of supplies, gift-givers can give a gift card to a neighborhood hardware store. Expert consultation: Who can’t use a little help with their home remodeling efforts? Give the gift of a consultation from an interior designer or professional contractor to help complete plans that may be a little out of reach for the average DIYer. Magazine subscription: There are plenty of ideas on the internet, but a subscription to a home remodeling or interior design magazine puts inspiration right in homeowners’ hands. Pages can be marked or cut out and used on idea boards. Tools and supplies: Homeowners just starting out may benefit from the basics. Stores often sell starter tool kits that can be used in home improvement-themed baskets. Experienced DIYers may have a special tool in mind that is outside their budget right now, like a chop saw or cordless power drill. Purchasing one of these items can help them move projects along more smoothly. Big-ticket item: Some friends and family members may want to pool their resources and offer loved ones an over-the-top gift. This can include a backyard playset for children, a storage shed, a pool installation or even a new appliance package. Room redo: All it may take is some new linens or accents to transform a room. From throw pillows to curtains to wall art, give the gift of an easy room makeover.

Shop Local How to support small businesses this season

W

hile the holiday season is important for small businesses every year, with the unprecedented struggles they face due the coronavirus pandemic, this year finds many of them—from retailers to restaurants—challenged as never before. A ZenBusiness survey of more than 1,000 small business founders, senior managers and decision makers found that 37% of small businesses that employ between 11 and 25 people were considering laying off more than one-fifth of their workforce. It’s no surprise, then, that many in our communities want

to support them now more than ever. Here are ways you can help. • Shop in person. If you’re healthy and comfortable visiting local stores, consider making the trip instead of buying online from the big e-commerce sites for at least some of your gifts. After all, many of our small shops offer unique items you won’t find on the big websites. • Shop small businesses online. Many small businesses have increased their e-commerce capabilities to generate revenue. Those concerned about shopping in person this season should explore the delivery and curbside pickup options available at locallyowned small businesses. Even

businesses that have not traditionally been allowed to deliver, such as breweries and wineries, have been able to do so during the pandemic. • Buy local gift cards. Gift cards take the guesswork out of holiday shopping, they’re easily shipped or emailed to loved ones. That’s a significant benefit during the 2020 holiday season, when delivery times are expected to be lengthy. Gift cards to local businesses simplify shopping, support small businesses and help shoppers avoid potential delivery delays. • Order holiday meals. Save yourself the time prepping and cooking this year’s holiday feasts by ordering from a local restaurant. If the restaurant

does not deliver, chances are you can pick up curbside. Even if there are some homemade culinary traditions you don’t want to give up, consider ordering part of the meal, such as dessert, from a local bakery. • Share your experience. Word-of-mouth is vital to small businesses at any time, and can be especially valuable as they try to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic. On social media, share information about the lengths local small businesses have gone to in regard to safety measures, order fulfillment and their delivery and pickup efforts. This could encourage neighbors and friends to follow your lead and provide vital support to local businesses in need.
