Stanley Volunteer Fire Department October 5 to 11 is Fire Prevention Week Across Canada This week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire during October 89, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The biggest blaze in US history occurred the same date. The Peshtigo Fire, (a forest fire that roared through Northeast Wisconsin), burned 16 towns, killed 1,152 people, and scorched 1.2 million acres. This year’s theme—Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Every Month—focus on the importance of protecting your family by having working smoke alarms installed on each level of your home and outside every sleeping area. Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 pm and 7 am, when most people are asleep. Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half! CDFFA Firefighter Games Hosted by SFVD—Oct 4th Stanley will again host the annual firefighter games for the Capital District Firefighters’ Association, at the school. For the most part, there are not fire fighter skill games. You are encouraged to attend and cheer for local teams vying for first place. The winning team will receive a trophy, cash prize of $1,000 and will represent our district in Bathurst, NB next spring. Games start at 10:30 am in the Stanley School lower parking lot. Refreshments provided by the “MacShack.” Fire Education Opportunities in our Community Your fire department has been involved within the community, educating young and old alike, on fire safety and fire prevention. We have worked with the local schools through demonstrations and with local organizations (school & daycare visits to FD), and with door to door smoke detector campaigns. There are programs and activities available to the community from members of the Stanley Fire Department an example of such programs is listed below. Learn Not to Burn® Preschool Program address the high risks children under the age of five face in fatal home fires. This program integrates literacy, movement, music, and dramatic play to provide a developmentally appropriate learning experience for preschool-aged children. Remembering When™ A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults designed to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible.
