From the

Pastor’s ear Friends,

We got a new refrigerator at the parsonage this week, and it’s funny how excited I am about it. (and a special shout out to the wonderful couple who made such a wonderful donation to make this happen). It’s a great refrigerator. As we were moving the old refrigerator out, underneath I found Jason Fry’s nametag. The punch line is that it was his nametag from when he served Kingsville UMC! It’s one of the peculiarities of being a Methodist pastor; we clergy all live in each other’s houses, serve each other’s churches, preach from each other’s pulpits. Jason and I go way back. He was an assistant spiritual director on my Walk To Emmaus back in 1987. We have been friends ever since. 3

Vol. 13

April 2016

Jarrell Sharp, the pastor here before Jason, served with me on the Board of Ordained Ministry. I always love seeing Jarrell and picking his brain over his knowledge of classical Christian spirituality. Larry Altman and I both served St. Luke UMC in San Anglo. Keith Wyatt and I both served in Eldorado. Rick Waters was the primary spiritual director on my Walk to Emmaus. I could go on and on, even back to George Ricker who served Edison Street Methodist back in the 50’s. He and I both served St. Luke’s as well. We clergy know each other well. In many ways, we are like family. We know each other’s strengths, but we also know each other’s weaknesses, limitations, and blind spots. We have laughed and worshiped together, but we have also been mad at each other, yelled at each other, and been hurt by each other. But here is the thing. Every week we stand up and preach the Gospel and forgiveness and love. “Forgive me my sins as I forgive others,” we pray each Sunday. And so, (dang it!) we have to practice what we preach. And what we believe. And what we proclaim. As hard as it is to do. And so we try to get along. We try to love each other. We try to stick together. We try to be there for one another. This is the basic Easter message, of course. Those Jesus loved and depended on betrayed him and denied him. And still he died for them. Forgave them. Loved them. Stuck it out with them. That’s what Christians do.

And so dear friends, if we are truly to be a church “home” for one another, if we are going to be a true family in Jesus Christ, if we desire for true renewal and revival to continue, then let us be about the hard but wonderful work of forgiveness and reconciliation. If there pastors/ congregants/churches/ friends/enemies/family to be forgiven, then let it be so. And if we need to be forgiven, let us go to the altar of Grace. This would most please Jesus, of course. Let us be free and at peace so that we can enjoy life’s blessings, even if sometimes it’s as ordinary as a really good refrigerator! Have a great Easter season everyone,

Proud to be Your Pastor,

George Rev. George Lumpkin has served as Senior Pastor of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church since June of 2015. He has been serving as an ordained minister in Texas for more than 25 years. fredumc.org 4

or my seventieth birthday present, Marge gave to me – not “a partridge in a pear tree” but a pedicure! WHAT!!! How insulting to my male EGO*!!! My fear increased as I thought that a pedicure always included nail polish—probably a bright shiny silver, or a baby blue, or green like grass, or a pink like a ballerina’s tutu! Ladies and Gentlemen, it is an understatement to say I resisted every time (more than six weeks) my dear wife extended an invitation to go with her. I resisted like “nasty” but, thank God, that emotion did not materialize or I might have done damage by kicking a dog!!! (All pet lovers forgive me for thinking like that!)

Hear this. I expected at least ten women staring at me as I opened the salon door. Instead, there was only one soul in the entire establishment and he was sitting in the chair with his feet in the water finishing up his pedicure and moving on to his manicure!!! When he left, Marge and I had the entire place to ourselves. (God has a sense of humor!) We sat side by side getting our individual pedicure. I heard Marge say to the nail tech “Be gentle, this is his first time.” Not only was I having my first pedicure but…with the skill of a surgeon, the nail tech not only gave me a pedicure but removed my ingrown toenail without any pain!!! I sat back and let the massage of the chair and a “foot washing pedicure” take my anxiety and resistance to love, away.

Today is the day for the pedicure!

Well, as you probably have guessed, Marge turned “nasty me” over to God. I was minding my own business. Marge was sitting in the lounge chair next to me, I was putting my socks on. She smiled and looked at my feet! Right then and there I was convicted by the Spirit. “My Child,” said the Spirit. “I had nails driven in my feet and hands...Surely you can endure a pedicure as a birthday gift of love from Marge.” “No Lord,” I said with conviction. Not “No” but “No, No!” Thank you very much!

Next time I am adding a manicure to the pedicure…with no polish… unless God wants to intervene again!

This, dear reader, is the message of God’s gift of Agape Love: “The Will of God will never lead you, where the Grace of God cannot keep you.” Be Blessed to be a Blessing,

Pastor Sid *A Definition of EGO: Edging God Out!

“I really am thankful for your passion…” the words of my argument faded into silence. Silence broke my Ego’s cacophony of shouts of shame. God touched my selfish heart with God’s Agape Grace and said: “You have rejected Marge’s gift of agape love.” “I know, Lord,” I confessed but… The Spirit said: “No buts…You’re forgiven. Now let Marge wash your feet (John 13:1-17) by way of that pedicure.” Marge had a bigger grin as I said:

Rev. Sid Spiller has been our associate Pastor at FUMC since July of 2014. He served as a pastor for over 35 years, and focuses primarily on pastoral care and senior adult ministry here in his retirement.

“Today is the day for the pedicure!” She was ready! fredumc.org

HOME... a place to belong ompared to many people who go have gone through, and are going through, some really tough family situations, my upbringing was pretty nice. Oh, yes, my family had some normal growing pains and disagreements, but all in all we were pretty normal and non-exciting. No drugs, alcohol, tobacco, divorce, physical violence, running away, stealing… no not even foul language in my home! So as I think of ‘home’ my memories are pretty good. My home was a place of love, even when my brother and I had arguments with my dad and were quick to blame the generation gap on our communication difficulties, I knew that both my mom and dad loved me and I always had a feeling of belonging there.

thanks to a group of believers that welcomed them in.

As we were considering this word ‘home’ for our new church mission emphasis, the words to the theme song for Cheers came in mind… “where everybody knows your name.” But our church ‘home’ may not be a place where we know everyone’s name - we should know the conditions and needs of each other and care. Our Church family should be a place that becomes a haven of hospitality, that takes us as we are in our current condition and gives us strength to go on through our life circumstances.

Acts tells us that when Paul saw the group, he was encouraged and thanked God. It was a moment of worship to see fellow believers “go the distance” and give courage to continue on. This is evangelism at its purest level, to receive help and encouragement from others that love you and care for you.

But those friends didn’t just send them on their way, they sent ahead to inform other believers that Luke and Paul were journeying and they should meet them. So along the long straight Roman Road called the Appian Way, a group of believers travelled to meet Paul and Luke to escort them into Rome. These folks travelled that road for about 50 miles to meet Paul and that wasn’t in a car! How long would it take you to walk 50 miles? They did that for Paul and Luke. The ‘church’ met them where they were, they didn’t just stay at the front gate and wait for them to appear, they went out to help them and give them aid.

We are the Church of Jesus, and as that we are the ones to extend to others in our community the grace of Jesus Christ. We received it as a free gift and as we give that gift to others, we find God’s love and grace in our own lives.

On his last journey that would send him to Rome, the Apostle Paul stopped at a town on Home, my friends, is a place of grace, of the Italian coast named Puteoli. Reading in Acts acceptance, of help along the way, and truly a 18, we find several interesting things about that place to belong. Make this place your home! town. First of all, Paul and Luke found some “brothers and sisters” there Don Doss joined the FUMC staff in April that welcomed them and let them of 2007 having served in several other spend a week with them. ear Church Family, I found some interesting tips from food and health website on wonderful wellness tips: 1. Set one realistic health and wellness goal today (don't promise yourself too much!). 2. Be kind and pay yourself a compliment today. 3. Color your health happy by planning at least one meatless day into your week. 11

4. Pamper your brain and fuel it well with healthy fats (i.e., nuts, seeds, fish and avocado). 5. Clear your pantry, fridge and freezer of foods with a lot of sugar, fat and salt. 6. Add healthful foods into your day, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. 7. Savor a glass of wine or a beer with a meal (if you drink alcohol). 8. Do 12 sit-ups, push-ups and planks today (repeat 3 times).

9. Factor in fiber today with vegetables, fruits and whole grains, nuts, seeds and beans, peas and lentils.

12. Forge ahead -- don't let a bump in the road of your healthy lifestyle get you down. Keep your goals at the top of your mind and move forward.

10. Sit less today -- stand while working with a standing desk, pace during conference calls and walk at lunchtime.

20/20, right friends? Ready for the real nitty gritty, scary, hard-to-admit stuff? Okay.

ello Church! Your friendly neighborhood communications director here. Okay. Are you ready for this? Because I’m about to get REALLY real with you here this month. I’m going to talk to you about my love life. Whoa. Deep breath, guys. I’m rewriting my column now for the third time. I just deleted a whole page about my work at the Fredericksburg Theater Company. Which was fine. It’s an enormous part of my life right now. But. Here I am. Past my own deadline, and feeling like God is telling me to open up and be more vulnerable with you. That’s what home is all about, after all.

I would love to tell you that I am always perfectly secure in my singleness. That I never question whether or not The Lord has some man out there in the world and I’m going to meet him when we’re both ready, but in the meantime I am a strong and independent woman of Christ. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. I wrestle with both ends of the spectrum, sometimes finding myself completely terrified of the entire idea of opening myself up to another person and allowing their life to become entwined with mine. Because I mean, let’s be real, things are coasting to get along pretty smoothly right now.

So I’ve been here with you I’m about for almost 18 months now, REALLY real with But other days I long for just that. A and the questions about my you here this month. best friend to share my life with and a relationship status have I’m going to talk to partner to pursue The Lord with every gotten more frequent, you about my love day. Nowhere in the bible does God promise the better part of five years. It’s been a huge that everyone will fall in love and get blessing during this season of my life, from married. That’s not a given of living a life graduating college, to picking up and moving dedicated to Christ. And it’s also not the here, to dedicating so much of my free time point of life with Christ. It’s not the goal. So if to the theater company and freelance I allow myself to want that, does it mean I projects. want Jesus less? The Lord has blessed me with the freedom to I don’t have the answers for this one, friends. go where He has led me, focus on becoming But that is okay; I don’t need them. e are pleased to announce that On February 9th, 2016 the Memory Garden which includes the columbarium, memory wall, and garden located at the entrance to the church became debt free! When the columbarium was founded in 2011 it was with 24 pre-sold niches and a loan from the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church Foundation for $20,000 at a 5% interest rate.

The Committee agreed to repay the Foundation loan within 10 years. However, after 4 ½ years, enough money was available that the loan could be repaid, thus reducing the amount of interest needed for the loan. It has been a wonderful relationship between the Foundation and the Memory Garden Committee, and it will be missed since the Foundation furnished a committee member to work with us and to share input and that will no longer be needed! To date, 82 memory wall plaques and 32 niches have been sold. Whether a family chooses to place a plaque for a loved one who has been buried elsewhere, or uses one of the niches for a loved

FIRST YOUdream Offered by the FUMC Foundation Committee

First You Dream, A Financial Management Program First Comes the Dream Then Comes The Analysis, The Plan and The Action A personal learning experience.

Looking for a way to serve? Learn how to easily lead First You Dream workshops. oney, scripture, and personal financial accountability are not topics which inspire most of us to action. It’s much more fun to do other things like enjoying our family and friends, going to Whataburger to get away from it all, attending a football game, shopping, taking a trip, or working out at the gym. You may be reading here about the First You Dream, learning opportunity, and thinking….well I probably should go but I don’t want to share my personal story, I really don’t like anything having to do with finances, investing is just a dream since I barely make enough to get by, and I haven’t found a lot of comfort and courage from having someone preach to me about my money. 17

Vol. 13

April 2016

First You Dream was designed for everyone and overcomes those concerns! Please come and learn (or re-learn) financial basics such as investing, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, life insurance, legal protection, owning a home, reverse mortgages, debt management, long term care insurance, expense management, and other fundamentals. These we learn together; but the accountability process belongs to you. Journal in your workbook and privately collect information about the pieces of your financial life. All we do will be wrapped around scripture through topics such as Dare to Be Daniel: Living and Spending Faithfully in a Consumer Culture. Form a group or contact Debra Hadsall at 956-433-9908 (txt is OK) email womensfc@aol.com with your suggested dates. The cost is $5.00 per person for the workbook. All people of the church and community are invited. Please tell your friends. If you have a small group of people who want to meet at another time or another place, please let me know. People who consider themselves nonchurchgoers are always welcome. We can meet in homes if that makes your friends more comfortable. I thank the FUMC Foundation Committee for their interest and support of this program. Debra Hadsall, Co-Creator, First You Dream www.financialdreaming.com

MISSION MOMENT

a worker overseas home

ur worker overseas in the Philippines, Marsha, will be here at our church very soon. The Choose Life Sunday School Class and our Missions Committee is delighted to cohost a covered dish dinner on Friday evening, April 22nd at 5:30 p.m. in our Fellowship Hall. We would love to have anyone in our church who wants to come and be part of this “special evening,” to hear and see Marsha. Please do bring your favorite dish to share. We want to begin at 5:30 to give Marsha plenty of time to speak and allow everyone to enjoy fun and fellowship and still get home by 7:30, so no one has to drive after dark!

Across all her years as a missionary, her Christian love and witness have always been a real inspiration to so many that have known and loved her. She has truly been “sold out to Christ,” and has done an outstanding job in the Philippines. We hope to see all of you on April 22nd here at 5:30 p.m.! Submitted by Sherry Freeman

Opportunities To Serve Welcoming Home Looking for an easy way to serve? We need greeters to welcome people as they come in for worship on Sunday mornings and ESPECIALLY to man to the Welcome Desk and answer questions for guests (or members!). We will provide all the necessary training, all you need is a smile! Sign up in the church office.

41&Change Coffee Sales Coffee for camp sales are now the FIRST and THIRD Sunday of each month. That means more opportunities to stock up (if you didn’t know already, they are now selling K-cups!), and more opportunities to fund YOUR ministries. Proceeds for April’s sales (April 3rd and 17th) will benefit the Belize Mission Group. If you want to take over the sales to help raise money for your missions, contact Brenda Miiller at lecrecep@hotmail.com

Audio Visual Tech Help Our praise team is growing! That means our audio and video team occasionally needs some help. If you are interested in getting involved with the worship service in a new way by helping with sound, running the Sunday slideshow, or producing our live stream, contact our communications director, Tricia, at tricia@fredumc.org

Butterfly Blessings Help us make our home a church of ONE THOUSAND blessings. It’s easy. Just stop by the table in the narthex filled with baskets of paper butterflies, and write down all the ways you are blessed. Then celebrate with us by bringing a friend to share them with on April 10th! fredumc.org 24
