ear Friends, Sometimes when people ask me “why did you enter the ministry?” my response is “It’s the only way God could make a decent Christian out of me. “ The imposed discipline, the obvious obligation to “practice what you preach,” the immersion in Scripture, worship, prayer, and good deeds, the inspiration of much time spent with other Christians; all of this has been a sometimes challenging but always blessed way of staying on the Way with the Risen Christ. In many ways, I think that is the primary thing I have always wanted; to be a worthy disciple. A Christian. The desire to do so affects and shapes everything in my life, from how I tried to raise my children to how I use my money to my views on politics to what I read. I’m still trying to figure it out, and I still have to ask for forgiveness when I fall short. What a blessing and privilege it has been this past year to be on that shared journey with all of you. Our mission statement is “Making Disciples for the Transformation of the World.” That is not some shallow, advertising slogan for our stationary. It is exactly what we are about with each other, with ourselves, with those we have not even met yet. The
scary, challenging, sometimes painful, blessed, exciting Way of the Risen Christ. With all the pain, tragedy, political polarization, and violence of our nation and world right now, it is ever more important to stay centered, dedicated, and focused on The Way. To that end, we are putting together all sorts of learning opportunities starting in August and September to help you go deeper in your discipleship. We will probably put out a special edition of the newsletter in early August with details on these learning opportunities. And don’t forget about the regular disciplines of worship, prayer, and Scripture. I know that when I neglect these basic things, my wheels seem to get off track rather quickly. Keep the faith, my friends. Enjoy the summer and all God’s good blessings. Slow down a little. Keep the Sabbath. Pray and be courageous through all the challenges. God is Good. All the time.

Bible Study Part II Dear Friends,
I really climbed out on a limb! I did not know what George (not our Senior Pastor) would say, but I trusted George to tell the truth. I sent George an email asking if he would share his honest opinion about what my 747 Bible Study meant to him. George Barnette is a member of FUMC Johnson City and also the chair of the Hill Country District of the UMC.
“
topic, but it did explain what each book is and says, its unique position in the Bible, and how it fits with other Scripture. Then he dipped into detail far enough to show the meanings behind the superficial words. Finally, he connected the points to their value to our lives in today’s world. And once in awhile, he dropped in facts that change how you look at a text, like the fact that Luke is the Bible’s only native Greek author, and how that influenced what he chose to write about and how he said it.
And once in awhile, he dropped in facts that change how you look at a text, like the fact that Luke is the Bible’s only native Greek author...
And by the way, George is beyond a doubt the most humble Christian man I have ever met. I am a better pastor because of his influence. Here is what he said (and I am humbled by this!) about the Bible Study: My main complaint about bible studies is that they lack at least one key element to make them worth the time. I expected Sid’s to be just another one of them. I was wrong.
”
It will leave you with plenty of interesting nuggets you can go investigate on your own. As you do, you’ll understand how the facts fit together in the bigger picture, what it meant to the audience at the time, and what it means for you today. I recommend the course.
Takeoff for 747 Bible Study is Tuesday, August 16th at 10 a.m., or Thursday August 18th at 7 p.m. Register in the church office, online at fredumc.org or in worship on Sunday. Be Blessed, Pastor Sid
I had drowsed through studies that were a rereading of Scripture, with no more illumination than top-of-the-head comments from fellow listeners who hadn’t read the text, much less considered background or meaning. Other studies provided some additional setting and meaning, but failed to cross the 2,000-year gap to connect to life today. Or they went narrowly into the book at hand without connecting to the rest of Scripture. To my pleasant surprise, Sid’s class avoided those traps. Mind you, it’s a view from 30,000 feet...it didn’t bog down in everything there is to know about any specific

oming off a very successful year during which the Kid’s Music Academy (KMA) saw participation increase to over 50 students, Director of Music Ministries Don Doss is preparing for some big changes in the program. KMA is an after-school program which offers students in grades K-5 the opportunity to learn music theory through self-paced, computer-aided instruction; participate in a choral ensemble; and learn to play an 7

instrument. It attracts students from the entire socio-economic spectrum, and in its first eight years of operation, has proven to attract new families to our church. Initially operated entirely by volunteers, the offering of lessons in guitar and violin has driven the need to pay instructors in order to offer a consistent, quality experience for the students. Many students have progressed through the KMA curriculum to go on to more advanced instruction in an instrument and even
prepares for another successful year participation in the Hill Country Youth Symphony. As the program became more complex, the need for supplemental funding has increased. During academic year 2015 – 2016, several members of our church responded to the need with individual gifts. That assistance was much appreciated and allowed the program to end the year on a high-note. In order to provide a more robust and reliable funding stream, as well as to assist Don in managing the program, an advisory board has been formed. Pam Wilhite has offered her expertise in grant-writing and has several proposals under consideration at funding sources. Terry Hadsall has volunteered to provide financial management to the project, and Judy and Bob Hickerson round out the
board of advisors. Other volunteers will be welcomed enthusiastically! 2016 – 2017 will be a year of change for KMA. For various reasons, the program is moving from Wednesday to Tuesday afternoon, a change which offers new opportunities, as well as challenges. Don will need to find and train new volunteer teachers, helpers, transporters, food preparers, and others, so watch for coming appeals. KMA is unquestionably one of the most successful outreach programs of our congregation, and the potential to reach new unchurched children and their parents is virtually unlimited. You can be a part of this exciting program which is starting its ninth year of operation. See Don Doss or one of the board members for more information. Submitted by Bob Hickerson

dear, sweet friend of mine said to me recently, “I love to put my feet in the sand.” It didn’t take me long to make arrangements for us to hit the beach for a couple of days. While there I showed her the basic principles in sandcastle building. We worked together for about an hour, then she took a nap and for the next 2 or 3 hours I continued sculpting in the sand. 9

Playing in the sand is relaxing for me, as is creating something. I thought about how I was spending so much time on something that would be washed away the next day. Why did I want to get those stairs just right? Why was I so persistent in getting one of those arches to stay in place? Well, yes, I can be stubborn. I think God was teaching me a lesson on joy. If I can get so much joy out of playing in the sand and making something
that won’t last, how much more joy in working for Him and for the things that do last. VBS was a time of hard work and joy. We had 38 children that week who heard that there is only One True God. I had the privilege of being a family leader. At the end of the week, right before the end of the night, one 6year-old boy looked up at me and said “I don’t want to leave.” He and the rest of the kids had so much fun learning about God through stories, music, games and family time. Being with those kids and hearing them sing their hearts out to God during music, or one boy who was able to tell the story from the previous day (whom I thought wasn’t paying attention at all), or seeing the look in their eyes when they “get it” brings so much joy. Watching God work in the hearts of these children was simply amazing. It wasn’t just the children that God was working on. One leader said, “I am grateful to have been allowed this opportunity to interact with children and to share Jesus with them. This
church has truly become my home! For this I am especially grateful!” Another who served as leader of our kitchen crew chose to change her vacation plans. She said, “If we are going to ask people to make this place their home then the food needs to be done right.” By the way, we had over 30 adults helping with VBS. There were many jobs from making cookies to director. Thank you so much to all who helped and poured their hearts into the lives of these children. It is such an honor and a joy to see how serving in children’s ministry blesses children, those who serve in it, and our church. The work that God is doing in the hearts of children, adults and our church is work that is eternal. It will not be washed away by the waves, but will be stored up as treasures in heaven. Blessings, Lisa Lisa Davis serves as Children’s Director for FUMC. During the last 7 years , she has taught God’s Word to children as a children's leader at Bible Study Fellowship, Sunday School and at multiple VBS programs. This has developed a passion in her for the Bible and for children to know it. She is excited to bring children and their families closer to Christ. fredumc.org 10

CARING THOUGHTS Congregational Care Ministry I have a big family, a REALLY BIG family. In fact, there are over 550 people in my family: grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. If I am having a bad week, feeling tired, or just having the “blahs,” several of my family members will invariably ask: “What’s wrong?” “How’s it going?” “Do you need anything?” “Is there anything I can do?” Conversely, if something great has happened, I have family that will rejoice with me. I am also assured that my family members are praying for me, sometimes even when I haven’t specifically asked for prayers. As you have probably figured out, the family I described goes beyond the biological definition (although if we go far enough back, we do share common genetics). Webster’s definitions of a family include: “all the people living in the same house,” “a group of people related by blood,” and “a group…having a common source or similar features.” As members of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, we do “live” in the same house. Our common source is our love for Christ, and we are related by blood, His blood shed for us. Like me, many of you have experienced warmth, caring, and nurturing from our church family. Unfortunately, some members of our family do not share such blessings. Maybe these family members don’t belong to a Sunday School class, or to any other of our many active, caring groups. Maybe they can’t come to church, or can only come once in a while. Maybe they
just need a little more encouragement to discover that sense of belonging. Congregational care at FUMC involves supporting and nurturing each member of our family, from birth to death…and beyond. As chairperson of the Congregational Care Committee, I have ambitious goals for our family. I envision a congregation in which each member’s life is touched in some way by at least five others. I am asking your help to spread that sense of family to members who have, for one reason or another, felt left out. Initially, I am asking for volunteers willing to contact members of our family who are unable to come to church. This would include members who still live in their own homes as well as those in assisted living and other care facilities in Fredericksburg. Your contact would include home visitation, phone calls, and cards. You could even take another friend with you on your visits! I am asking for a one- year commitment, although you are welcome to visit your family member for as many years as you like. Please prayerfully consider helping with this vital ministry. You may contact me at 998-7440, or akghahn22@gmail.com. You may also leave your contact information with Linda Klein or Pastor Sid in the church office. I also encourage your suggestions on ways to ensure that all members of our family feel welcome and at home at Fredericksburg UMC. Blessings to you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, Alice G. he church bell tower and stone walls behind the pulpit and organ have had leaks and moisture problems for several years. After considerable research, the Board of Trustees signed a contract with Rick Watson, founder and president of SURMAC, Inc. in San Antonio to repair and waterproof the walls for $16,830.

The work was recently completed. The change in appearance is dramatic, as you can see in the photos taken before and after the repair work. When the bill arrived last month, the trustees were surprised that SURMAC, Inc. only charged us $10,018. We called Rick Watson, thinking he had made a mistake. However, he said he knew that we needed a lot of repairs to our facilities and decided to make a donation of $6,812. In addition, Watson made another donation of $4,500 by cleaning and waterproofing the other exterior wall behind the projection screen. It is heartening to find in today’s world a man like Rick Watson, and a company like SURMAC, Inc. that is willing to donate over $11,000 of work to help us repair and waterproof our HOME out of the kindness of his heart. That game was played in the AT&T Center on the home court of the San Antonio Spurs.

ello Church! Your friendly neighborhood communications director here. I have this song that I find myself listening to on repeat over and over. The artist, called Sleeping at Last, might be the single most talented songwriter I’ve ever come across. His musicianship and articulation of a life lived following God is, in my personal opinion, mind blowing. But this one song, Taste, is the one that I keep coming back to.
When our vine is planted in Him, he prunes us to bear fruit by his provision, instruction and grace. It’s not our doing. It’s His. That realization. That extraordinary understanding that we have a God who loves us THAT much is indeed like fists unraveling and palms turning upward to worship Him. It is like all those broken things inside of us getting pieced back together and made whole by His perfect love. It’s not about following all the rules and doing all the right things because that’s what we’re supposed to do, friends. It’s about our Creator. It’s about coming together in fellowship to worship who He is.
The more I listen to it, the more I realize how perfectly it represents my whole heart. I won’t share all the lyrics with you (although giving you his words might be a better use of this space When we come to this understanding, how than my own) but I would like could we not want more and more of We’re nothing less to share a few phrases with you: Him? To find items after 2008, check the author and title list on top of the card catalog. For items pre-2008, check the card catalog. Or just enjoy browsing! If you are interested in helping us keep the library current, call 830-591-6241
Elementary School Luncheon There are several ways to get involved with our Elementary School Luncheon on Friday, August 19th. The committee needs volunteers to act as hosts/ hostesses, greeters and to clean up after the event. Contact Donna White at 997-8814, or Beverly Harrell at 9908184 for more information. Trustees Highway Sign The trustees need your help getting some welcome signs put up along the highways coming into town. Each sign is $200 each, and we would like to have six of them. There is a “Christmas in July” display with an example sign. Please prayerfully consider donating to a sign. For other ways to get involved, contact Mark Langerhans at 830-456-5688.
Congregational Care Are you a people person? Or a person who has never met a stranger? If your answer is “yes, the Congregational Care Committee is looking for YOU! We need people willing to visit, call, and send cards to our church family members who can’t make it to church. They may be living in their own homes, or in a care facility here in Fredericksburg. Our goal is to ensure that all members of our church family feel loved and cared for. Please leave your information with Alice Hahn (Chairperson, Congregational Care) at 998-7440, with Pastor Sid, or with the church office. Thank you for helping with this vital ministry. fredumc.org
