y Father goes on working, and so do I. John 5:17 The Holy Spirit…will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26 Dear Friends, I compose this on March 2nd, the day after Ash Wednesday, day two of Lent. And it’s hard to believe that it is indeed March and Lent, and that Easter is around the corner! Lent of course is great time to at least try to step back a bit from all the “worldly” demands of life and focus (or refocus) on the life and sacrifice of Jesus, the Passion, the Resurrection, life itself. I hope you will commit yourself to this endeavor, perhaps using the suggestions in the “40 days of Love” handout, or perhaps through the more classical spiritual disciplines, such as fasting, daily prayer and Scripture study, worship, solitude, etc. I have started reading Richard Rohr’s new book, “The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation.” In it Rohr pushes hard on the premise that the Trinity has largely been MIA – Missing in Action from Christian practice. He quotes Karl Rahner: “We must be willing to admit that, should the doctrine of the Trinity have to be dropped as

false, the major part of religious literature could well remain virtually unchanged.”
Grace and Peace,
Pastor George
That the Trinity is not a static doctrine but an attempt to articulate the experience of the Divine.
Rev. George Lumpkin has served as Senior Pastor of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church since June of 2015. He has been serving as an ordained minister in Texas for more than 25 years.
Rohr says, “Instead of God being the Eternal Threatener, we have God as the Ultimate Participant – in everything – both the good and the painful. Instead of God watching life happen from afar and judging it, how about God being inherent in life itself?“ He goes on to say “The Trinity reveals God as with us in all of life instead of standing on the sidelines, always critiquing which things belong and which things don’t.“ I have a classical theological education in which we were taught much about how to think about God and not much on how to be with God. It was a paradigm that that tended to be transactional and propositional rather than relational and mysterious. The later, of course, is not “safe.” It would require giving up control, and so could be dangerous, scary, unpredictable. And possibly much more fun. A much more exciting adventure. A better story. Rohr reminds me that I still have lots to learn, and lots to unlearn. Keep praying, my friends. Keep the faith, be courageous, remember one another. And as always, it continues to be my pleasure and privilege to be your pastor.
About the Season of Lent Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which began on Ash Wednesday (March 1st), and ends on Holy Saturday (April 15th). The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. The First Sunday describes Jesus’ temptation by Satan; and the Six Sunday (Passion/Palm Sunday) Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his subsequent passion and death. Lent can also be viewed as a kind of “Christian New Year.” A time to make spiritual resolutions and dedicate ourselves to a Christian lifestyle and practice. Some folks “give up” something, such as a bad habit or practice. Others might “add something,” such as a healthy habit or a spiritual practice. For example: -Daily Prayer & Meditation -Fasting -Scripture Reading & Study -Service -Worship -Simplicity -Solitude -Confession Think and pray as to how you might practice Holy Lent in preparation for Easter. fredumc.org 4
SHARING THE TRUTH
of the Gospel of Jesus
reehouse Kids’ Club has been in full swing since September. We play games, sing songs, eat snacks and tell Bible stories. But we don’t just tell Bible stories, we incorporate ways for the kids to experience Bible stories. Recently, we did the story of the plagues and played a relay game that had the children running to ten different stations to complete a task that related to that plague. The tenth station was a foam board cut out like a doorway that the kids had to paint a red line around. This was a hands on illustration of the Passover and 5

the Israelites painting the blood of the sacrificed lamb around their doorway. As I watched the children do this, one of them caught my attention. He didn’t want to just paint a stripe or a line, he wanted to cover the whole doorframe with red paint. It made me wonder if he understood that we are completely forgiven and completely covered by the blood of Christ when we accept Him as our Savior. Another way we incorporate Bible story experiences is by preparing a snack that relates to the story. Usually we give them the snack and ask them if they can figure out what story
we are doing. Making some snacks has been a lot of fun: we made a snake out of bread dough with peppercorn eyes and a pimento tongue when we learned about the serpent in the garden. There were the rainbow cupcakes when we learned about Noah, and for Joseph’s coat of many colors we put together graham crackers, frosting and colorful striped candy. For the plagues the snack was cherry jello with gummy fish (the Nile turned to blood with dead fish), ho hos made with eyes and pretzels (locusts), and crackers with cheez whiz and chocolate sprinkles (gnats). When I was telling this to someone a comment was made, “bordering on absurd.” While I think it was said in jest, it got me to thinking and asking myself two questions, “is it absurd to make the Bible stories, God’s power and the truth of His word meaningful and alive to children?” and “What is the most important thing for children to learn while they are here at the church?” We currently use The Gospel Project for our curriculum. One of the reasons I choose it for our afterschool program is because every story comes back to Jesus. The most important thing for these kids, and anyone else, to learn and know for themselves is that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead. That is the message of the Bible. That is the essence of the Gospel. The Gospel has the power to transform hearts and lives like nothing else. That is the power of God. The story of the plagues and Passover has a lot of disturbing imagery. So what do we do? Do we water down the message of the Bible when things get ugly? Do we try to keep things looking pretty because we think kids can’t handle it? What about the cross? The brutality of what Jesus endured during His trial and while on the cross was horrific. Do we spare children from the physical, emotional and spiritual suffering that Jesus went through because of our sin?
Have you ever noticed in the story of the Passover that God had the Israelites select a lamb and take special care of it for four days? You know how kids get with cute animals, they get attached to them. When it was time to sacrifice the animal, I imagine it was an emotional time for the kids and adults. As tears probably rolled down their faces, they had to take the lamb’s blood and put it around the doors of their houses. That is not a pretty picture. Sin isn’t pretty. They needed to know, and we need to know, that only God could save them. Children need to hear the truth of God’s Word and a bold presentation of the Gospel. If God didn’t spare the children of Israel from this, than neither should we. We tell the stories and share the Gospel in a way that helps them know in their hearts and minds how much God loves them and what He’s done for them. We do it in ways that help them experience the story and provoke curiosity. For all our children, we should want for them a passionate, vibrant, fully committed relationship with the One True Living God! That begins with knowing the truth of who God is and knowing who we are. So is that absurd? Maybe it is to some people. Nevertheless, I will continue to press on and follow Jesus’ command, “let the little children come to me.” Their future depends on it.
Many blessings, Lisa Lisa Davis serves as Children’s Director for FUMC. During the last 7 years , she has taught God’s Word to children as a children's leader at Bible Study Fellowship, Sunday School and at multiple VBS programs. This has developed a passion in her for the Bible and for children to know it. She is excited to bring children and their families closer to Christ.

Riser Project ur Chancel Choir is beginning a fund drive to purchase a set of portable ‘seated’ choir risers to be used in worship/concert music settings requiring the choir to sing in a location other than the choir loft! Many of our congregation will remember the choir singing for Easter or Christmas when they had to be seated in the chancel area and not the choir loft. 7
Vol. 22
March/April 2017
In those events the risers has to be built for that purpose using lots of lumber and screws and time. When the choir sings away from our campus for events like the Summer Celebration at Lady Bird Park or our Palmz in the Platz worship, we take some older riser units which don’t fit together and are somewhat dangerous because of the gaps that chairs can fall through… and usually do!
One of the goals of the Chancel Choir is to find more opportunities outside of our walls to go and present the gospel through music to our community in a variety of different ways. Having the risers gives us another dimension to reach out and share the message of Christ to our neighbors and friends in Fredericksburg. Risers that seat 50 people are costly and can’t be absorbed into the operational church music budget. The actual brand of risers hasn’t been decided on at this point, but the cost will likely be in the $7,000 to $12,000 range. Obviously this will take some time, but the Choir Council decided to go ahead and get started. The choir will be doing some activities in the future to help in this process including participating in the Pecan Grove Store Flea Market in April . Anyone interested in giving up and beyond your tithe to help the choir reach the goal is invited to direct the gift through the office to the Choir Riser Fund. Don Doss joined the FUMC staff in April of 2007 having served in several other Boerne and Kerrville churches. Don is FUMC’s Director of Music Ministries, and he oversees all of the musical groups and music ministry work that happens here. He personally directs the Chancel Choir and the Praise Team as well as the Kid’s Music Academy.
7 LAST WORDS
for Good Friday The Chancel Choir with orchestra will present Theodore Dubois’s “The Seven Last Words of Christ” on Good Friday, April 14th at 7 p.m. “The Seven Last Words” was written and first performed in 1867, and has been revered as a classical standard in the observance of the Passion of our Lord.
Theodore Dubois was born in France in 1837. He spent most of his life in Paris where he studied at the Paris Conservatory. While he was not recognized as one of the great musicians of his time, he was highly respected by his more famous contemporaries, including Franz Liszt (who gave him musical encouragement), Cesar Franck, and Camille Saint-Saens. Dubois was the organist and choirmaster at the Church of St. Clotilde in Paris (where Cesar Franck also served at one time) when he wrote “The Seven Last Words of Christ.” This composition was first performed in 1867 for the Good Friday service at the Church of St. Clotilde. Even though Dubois composed several other works (orchestral, choral and organ), very few of them are still performed today, with the exception of “The Seven Last Words of Christ.” Dubois is probably not known so much today because he composed very much in the musical style of his day, which today we consider overlyromantic. In this sense, “The Seven Last Words” is very much a “period” piece, in that its style is representative of another time and place– namely, the gilded age of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Our Chancel Choir has performed this work at least three times that we know of, but not since the 1980’s. The work includes three soloists, the soprano sung by Pam Wilhite, the tenor sung by Pam’s brother Philipp Dieter, and the bass sung by Jim Wilhite. The choir will be accompanied by an orchestra along with Judy Hickerson on the organ and Emily Junes on harp. Music has a way of reaching further into the heart than most other mediums. At this most important time of year as we remember the incredible gift of Jesus’ sacrifice for us, let’s be sure to invite those friends that need to hear this message as we reach out into our community. Let’s give the Holy Spirit a chance to reach hearts by bringing those in need of his love. Pray for this important musical outreach event! fredumc.org

MINISTRY MATTERS God’s Love in Action
ur faithful Wonder Workers have already put the new powerlift to good use! The monofilament wires used to support banners behind the chancel area were hopelessly tangled and couldn’t be straightened out from the ground. Further, they discovered a knot up near the ceiling that could not have been undone from the floor level. The powerlift allowed them to get up and untie the knot and unwrap the wires, putting them back in working order for the Altar Guild group. Thank you to our Wonder Workers (who certainly live up to their name), and our Fredericksburg UMC Foundation who provided the grant for the lift. 9

WORLDWIDE MISSION responding to the refugee crisis ear Friends, Following is part of a letter from George Barnette, our Hill Country Missions Chairman. As you know, immigrant issues are politically sticky and delicate right now, but it seems to me that when children are hungry, the Body of Christ's simple duty it to share our plenty with those who have so little. If you would like to help, our April Communion Rail offering will go to the Laredo United Methodist Church to help with food ministries. If you need to pass on this one, blessings all the same! Remember, we are still all in this together, trying to figure it all out together. So, please let us all keep it in our prayers. "And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward." -Matthew 10:42 Grace and Peace, Pastor George

Good news from Laredo — food is now able to move more efficiently across the river to feed the Cuban refugees trapped on the other side in Nuevo Laredo. Bad news — the churches on this side still have to pay Mexican customs to get the relief supplies across, at least for the moment. The Holding Institute in Laredo has been taking the lead in getting food across to the churches in Nuevo Laredo, who prepared it for the morethan-1,000 Cubans waiting to learn whether they’ll be allowed into the U.S. as refugees. They have received truckloads of food, mostly from Cuban immigrant groups around the country, and money from churches such as ours in the Hill Country District. Problem was, Mexican customs said a truckload of food was a commercial quantity, requiring the payment of
hundreds of dollars in fees, which the Holding Institute couldn’t afford. So the Holding Institute unpacked the trucks on the U.S. side and carried smaller quantities, two carloads, across each day to provide that day’s meals, paying much smaller fees at the border for each load. That has diverted much of the money received — an estimated $5,000—to pay federal government fees instead of buying more food, but there was no option: no fees, no food deliveries at all. Now they’ve reached an agreement with the help of the Nuevo Laredo
city government, persuading customs to reduce the import fees on the food for the refugees, and they’re working on getting a humanitarian permit, which will let them cross the big truckloads with no duty payments at all. Which doesn’t mean the need is over — it just means money we send now will go directly to feed the refugees, rather than be partially diverted to the government. GENERAL CONFERENCE 2019 a call to prayer ear Friends, I am pleased to invite you into a special work of prayer for our Church. The 2016 General Conference asked the Council of Bishops to take up the challenge of offering leadership to our churches at this critical time when talk of schism and the nature of our unity is in the air. The Bishops offered a proposal to form a Commission on the Way Forward, which is now in place. The mission that has been developed for the Commission expresses the intention to "bring together persons deeply committed to the future(s) of The United Methodist Church, with an openness to developing new relationships with each other and exploring the potential future(s) of our denomination." Bishop Ken Carter, Bishop Sandra Steiner-Ball and Bishop David Yemba will convene the Commission, consisting of an additional 32 persons. They will be considering the legislation from the 2016 General Conference and the language in The Book of Discipline that deals with homosexuality, as well as looking at new ways of expressing connection. I am inviting United Methodist Women to join our bishops, The Upper Room and the United Methodist Men to hold this work 13 Vol. 22 March/April 2017
and these 35 people in prayer. Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett and Bishop Al Gwinn have led an effort to assign conferences a specific week during the next 18 months to pray for the Commission and its work. Find the scheduled prayer weeks for your Conference at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/ POWFschedule. Each week also has a suggested prayer focus on spiritual resources the Commission members will need. You might include this as you pray with the Prayer Calendar each day or in your local, district and conference meetings, and spiritual growth events. The list of Commission members is posted at umc.org. You may want to pray for each member by name and you may also want to let them know that they are in your prayers. Council of Bishops is preparing a plan to conduct additional and complementary work in annual conferences designed to broaden the conversation with hundreds of lay and clergy members. Please include these processes in your prayers as well. The Commission will have the benefit of a variety of presentations, and will bring its members' own wisdom and life experience to the work. These sessions have the potential to bring
additional insights and clarity. You and other members of United Methodist Women in your conference have wisdom to offer and you have worked on speaking about this as part of our mission study on The Bible and Human Sexuality. I ask you to consider what you could bring to these conversations "at such a time as this." It will also be important for the Commission and the Council to hear from youth and young people in this way. United Methodist Women can ensure that our younger members and other young people are heard. Finally, let's remember that our God is in the business of using imperfect vessels to
do kingdom work. Each of us individually and as members of the community of faith strive to grow spiritually so that we can be both faithful to our calling and fruitful in God's mission in the world. May this be a time of profound spiritual growth for the members of the Council, and the Commission and for all of us as we seek God's will for The United Methodist Church. Thank you sisters [and church], for responding to this call to be about the work of prayer and powerful conversation. At the beginning of Lent a couple of weeks ago, Pastor Sid introduced “A Forty Days of Love Spiritual Adventure During Lent.” Most of us go through life “giving up” something for Lent, but this guide encourages us to focus on giving OURSELVES, asking us to intentionally pour out love on others each week.

Zac and I are learning more about honoring our families, about giving selflessly, and about supporting and encouraging each other. Pretty good preparation for marriage, am I right? I can hear God calling me to Himself, putting His desires in my heart and asking me to respond to each circumstance with His love. I don’t get it right every time, but I am confident in the One who is faithful to complete the good work He started.
Just days after Pastor Sid and I made the guide available, I received a handwritten note in the mail from a member of our Praise Team thanking me for the work I do.
