I heard the “starfish” story in a new way this week. I’ll get to that later. First, let me share the version like it heard it -- give or take a few details. A man was walking along the beach picking up starfish that had washed ashore. One by one he would pick one up and then throw a starfish into the ocean thus saving the life of a starfish. A passerby stopped him and said: “You foolish old man. Do you think you can make a difference? Look at the hundreds of starfish that have washed upon the shore.” The old man bent over and picked up another starfish, threw it into the ocean and said: “It makes a difference to that one.”

Thank you church, for “bending” over to bless Ahren, the young man just released from jail. Your love has hit him like a fire hose!!! Your giving has made a huge difference in his life. Thank you for giving to the Lord to honor and bless Ahren. Now, church, find a ministry YOU can “bend over” to do and pour out God’s Love one cup at a time. Remember T.E.A.M. – Together Everyone Achieves More!!!

is with you. You are not Your love has hit God alone!!! Thanks be to God!!! him like a fire hose!!! Be Blessed, Your giving has Pastor Sid made a huge difference in his life. Thank you...

Now here is the new spin that I like. Change the passerby to the wife of the old man. She sees her husband throwing starfish back into the ocean and comes to the same conclusion. Not only does he have hundreds of starfish on the shore, but she adds that he may throw his back out by bending over so many times!

The old man replies: “If you will join me and both of us bend over we can get twice as many starfish back into the ocean in half the time.” That is called the work of a: Together Everyone Achieves More

O

ne of the music ministries’ busiest seasons is upon us! This year the music ministers of our congregation are going to present CELEBRATE LIFE! for our Christmas music celebrations. Celebrate Life is a youth musical that was released in 1972 and was written by Buryl Red and Ragan Courtney. Celebrate Life has sold over one million copies of the printed music since that time and has been presented more times than ANY OTHER musical ever written, with the possible exception of Handel’s Messiah which isn’t really a dramatic musical. Celebrate Life was written in the ‘thick’ of the era of church youth choirs that travelled all over the place on choir tours and

7

Vol. 8 Nov. 2015

trips. Although the main churches that had large youth choirs and presented this musical were mostly Baptist churches, there were many other denominations that shared it in the musical explosion of the 70’s. Many lives have been touched by “Celebrate Life” over the years as the work premiered in 1972, underwent a revival for its 25th anniversary, and most recently rose to the forefront of church music circles for its 40th anniversary, following the death of its musical composer, Buryl Red. Buryl Red was a pioneer church musician who thought that guitars and drums and almost anything else that could be played had a place in the sanctuary next to the pipe organ. Red loved virtually every style of

music as long as the presentations of it reached a level of excellence befitting the glorious Savior that we love. Ragan Courtney currently is pastor of The Sanctuary Church in Austin along with his wife, Cynthia Clawson.

10:30, then encourage and BRING their neighbors and friends on the following Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, December 14 & 15 at 7:00. And there’s still time to get involved in this musical presentation, just come on to practice and we’ll get you started!

The Life of Christ is revealed through music and drama beginning with Jesus’ birth, his ministry, his death, and his resurrection. The If you have any questions please email me at musical numbers and the drama are closely don@fredumc.org, or call me at 997-7679… intertwined as the four gospel writers, To God Be the Glory!! Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, share more of the Christ story through their dialogue between musical numbers. The musical numbers will feature the Chancel Choir and Praise Team with several soloists, supported by keyboards, guitar, percussion and orchestra. The kids from our Kid’s Music Academy will also be featured in a comic relief piece, “Three Kings” along with participating in other songs. This will be THE event that our congregation will want to encourage the community to include as a part of their 2015 Christmas plans. Our membership is asked to attend the Sunday morning presentation on December 13 at

Don Doss joined the FUMC staff in April of 2007 having served in several other Boerne and Kerrville churches. Don is FUMC’s Director of Music Ministries, and he oversees all of the musical groups and music ministry work that happens here. A Sunday School Adventure

T

attempts of achieving this it by creating special “Family Sunday School Lessons.”

9

October 11 was one of our first attempts and is was a huge success. The lesson was on creation and how perfectly God created the animals, including humans. Janet Lindley provided the base curriculum which

eaching children about God and all of His glory can be a little challenging. One must always consider how to create a lesson in such a way that engages the child and helps them internalize what is being taught. Therefore, the Children’s Ministry Team is always looking for ways to do. One of the Vol. 8 Nov. 2015

laid the foundation for an incredible day. The children met in the sanctuary to view, “The Creation Story” video. Elaine Bigelow then taught the children a perfect “creation” song. Afterwards, the children returned to their classroom for the rest of the story. At the end of the class, parents took their children to the LBJ State Park for a picnic lunch and then to the Exotic Resort Zoo in Johnson City. This emphasized what an awesome creator we have. Another “special” class in planned for November 8th. The lesson will be built around “He is our Rock” (Matthew 7: 24 -27). After the lesson the families will go to Enchanted Rock where they will have a picnic lunch, hike around and/or over the rock. Grandparents are encouraged to bring their grandchildren to participate in our upcoming November adventure.

Guiding a Child’s

Spiritual Life T

he moments in this life seem to be passing faster than ever, and more and more expectations are put on all of us, especially children. They are required to learn more and faster. Many parents, wanting them to have the best experiences and fit into our society, encourage them to participate in soccer, football, dance, karate, theater, etc. As a result the parents themselves are stretched, stressed and fatigued. And somewhere in all of this God is put to the side. So the question becomes, “What can we do to help the spiritual life of the child flourish?” In looking for answers to this question, I did a little research and found an article that sheds some light on the issue. It talks 11

Vol. 8 Nov. 2015

about what parents need to do to keep their families God –centered. The title is “10 Ideas: Living the Gospel in Your Home” by Janet Breitstein. She makes the following suggestions and expands upon them in the article: •

Repent

Forgive

Practice Humility

Be Grateful

Extend Grace

Don’t Judge

Serve Others

Love Lavishly

Speak Up

Focus on Eternity

MANIA

NEWSFLASH MISSION

e

This is a good article for all of us to read, because it applies whether you are talking about an individual family or a church family. Our children become more spiritual, happier and well balanced when their individual and church family acts out what Christ has taught us during His life, death and resurrection.

December 6th— Special Project Mission Mania is a children’s event to teach children that we demonstrate God’s love through acts of service. We have done this in Pioneer Club for the last year and will continue to do it during the 2015-16 school year. The children and the recipients of these outreach/teaching events have enjoyed them so much that we are now extending these service opportunities to our Sunday School families. Our next Mission Mania project will be to stuff and decorate gift bags to take to a nursing home. $57 was donated during the Factory ministry fair, but we will need additional donations. The items needed are: paper towels, travel size items shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, tooth brush, mouth wash, hand cream, soap, face towel. Beginning Sunday, November 1st there will be a box in the Fellowship Hall for donations. Thank you for your support. Beginning Sunday, November 1 there will be a collection box in the Fellowship Hall. On December 6, after attending Sunday School the children and their families will have a pizza meal and then fill, decorate and deliver their gifts to a nursing home.

Sharon serves as Children’s Director for FUMC. She is also deeply involved in Wounded Warriors at Nebo and Cards for Christ. She feels called to share Christ’s great love for humanity through her service.

ello Church! Your friendly neighborhood communications director here, writing to you with another church council meeting presentation looming. As many of you know, for many months now we have talked about creating a very clear identity and focus for our church. Because I’m pretty confident that most likely exactly three people read this column every month, I’m going to be very candid with you for a few minutes here, church.

Now please don’t think your pastors and church leadership just pulled in some random person off the street to fill this position. I do have at least a couple of credentials that make me well-suited to do what I do, but if there is one thing I’ve learned in my faith journey so far, it’s that my plan is never anywhere near as grand or exciting as God’s plan.

This process absolutely terrifies me. My entire I ultimately chose journalism as a career path job absolutely terrifies me. Did you Know? FUMC Supports Missionaries Worldwide.

I

f you remember quite a few months back, FUMC hopped on board a “Coffee For Camp Ministry” to support mission in Nicaragua. Sara and Joey Espinoza (daughter and son-in-law of Gary Marburger) and their three children, serve in Nicaragua as FUMC-supported missionaries at a Young Life camp situated on a large coffee plantation. The income from that coffee funds scholarships, providing kids who wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise an opportunity to go to camp and learn more about Jesus. After spending seven months in Nicaragua with his sister and her family, Josh Marburger was recruited as a marketing representative for the coffee sales. Since the spring, premium, fresh coffee harvested, roasted and bagged in Nicaragua has been available for purchase in our Fellowship Hall every fourth Sunday of the month, (which means your next chance to purchase coffee at FUMC will be Sunday, November 22nd!) Thank you to all of those who have supported this mission and donated to this incredible ministry. To show our appreciation, we are running a Christmas special in November and December with suggested donations starting at $10 for one bag, 2 bags for $15, and 3 for $20. Remember, all profits

go toward camp scholarships, and one bag sends one child to camp for one day. We might even get a visit from Josh on November 22nd or December 20th to hear about some exciting new products rolling out next year. So stock up on Christmas gifts (who doesn’t love fresh, central American coffee??), but even better, your gift to friends and family is also a gift the many kids who will have an opportunity to hear about Jesus as a result of this program. As Gary states on his website, “when you purchase this coffee, know that you are not only getting exceptional coffee, but you are helping change lives — not only the lives of the many Nicaraguan kids, who may be getting a once-in-alifetime experience, but also the lives of the workers and their families, who farm and harvest the coffee.” For more information, you can visit the following websites: http://marburgerorchard.com/ http://beyondbeanscoffee.com/ http://www.facebook.com/LaFincaVidaJoven http://www.younglife.org/Pages/default.aspx fredumc.org

Opportunities To Serve Pioneer Club & Kid’s Music Academy Volunteers Our Wednesday afterschool program is always thankful for willing hearts to participate in that ministry. We can use help preparing snack, aiding teachers, guiding children to and from activities and ensuring we have at least two adults with each group. If you are interested in giving a few hours of your time on Wednesday afternoons (between 3 and 6:30 p.m.) please contact Sharon Massey at sharon@fredumc.org, or Don Doss at Don@fredumc.org.

Wimberley Mission Trip Our Missions Committee is organizing a local mission trip to aid continuing flood-relief efforts in the Wimberley area. The trip is planned for November 14th, but all interested volunteers must pick up a form at the Welcome Desk and return them to the church ASAP. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. For more information, contact Jim Ryan at jnjaryan@yahoo.com

Cookies for Kairos Spread some love by joining the Kairos Prison Ministry in the church kitchen on October 29th from 3-5 p.m. and November 1st from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for a cookie bake-a-thon.

San Vicente Christmas Tree

Our Angel Giving tree is going up this month! Consider choosing a family from the tree and making their Christmas extra special. The mission trip is December 2nd-5th. If you would like to participate, contact Judy Hutcherson at 830-865-3562 to learn more.

Children’s Ministry Donations

As part of a special project in December, The children will be creating gift bags to take to a nursing home. We received $57 during the Factory ministry fair. However, we still will need a few items to complete our project. Please consider donating any of the following items: paper towels, travel size shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, tooth brush, mouth wash, hand cream, soap, face towel. Beginning Sunday, November 1st there will be a box in the Fellowship Hall for donations. Thank you for your support.

Decorating for Christmas Tuesday, December 1st has been set aside as our big “Decorate the Church for Christmas Day.” We will be setting up our new Christmas tree and hanging chrismons, setting up the nativity outside, hanging wreaths and putting some other Christmasy touches throughout the church. Contact Maryneil Dance at maryneil@beecreek.net or just show up around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday!
