Welcome to Blythewood!
O
n behalf of all our area businesses and residents, the Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to one of SC’s fastest growing communities. Nestled in the rolling hills of the northeast corner of Richland County in the SC Midlands region, is just a one hour drive south of Charlotte, NC and 20 minutes north of Columbia, our state capital. Our area offers wonderful outdoor amenities, including golf, tennis, equestrian sports, parks, hiking, hunting, fishing, and boating, with a heart for tourism, highly accredited Richland Two schools, a rich historical heritage; and an active and vibrant business community. Located on a ridge separating the Broad River and Catawba River watersheds, we are home to the headwaters of several creeks that flow to both. The Catawba River flows into Lake Wateree, a popular recreation area just north of Exit 24 and only a 20-minute drive away, which then becomes the Wateree River, flowing southward until it connects with the Congaree River at the confluence of the famous Santee lakes and basin before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Exit 27 on Interstate 77 is the first entrance into Richland County and gateway to the metropolitan conveniences of our capital city to the south, and the entrance to the Olde English District of SC and Appalachian Corridor to our north.
With our wonderful location, natural scenic beauty, and friendly people, Blythewood is an outstanding community to live, work, and visit. We are proud of our community and dedicated to the success of our neighbors. Welcome to Blythewood!

From the Mayor of Blythewood
C
ome visit, stay and live in Blythewood, South Carolina! I welcome you to our historic southern town. Our community was founded by Native Americans who settled the area. They called our area “Doko” which means “gathering place.” The community grew when early pioneers built a railroad watering station here to service the rail steam engines running between Columbia/Charleston and Charlotte. Today, Blythewood sits in a convenient location half way between the Smoky Mountains and South Carolina’s world-famous beaches Bryan S. Franklin and between the beautiful Lakes Murray and Wateree. The Blythewood area is home to several excellent, award-winning schools in the Richland County School District Two including five elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools. Academics, the arts, sports and community service are foremost in our children’s educational experiences. Blythewood is also home to the University of South Carolina Equestrian Team, winner of the national championship title in 2014. Our “Bravo Blythewood” fine arts group supports our artists, writers and musicians. Also, a pristine golf club, Cobblestone Park is in our town center and hosts numerous golf outings every year including the NCAA Southeastern Conference Ladies Golf Championship and the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association’s Open Tournament. We celebrate community with numerous town events each year in the areas of education, the arts, sports, family and community. Many of our popular gatherings include: January – Trinity United Methodist Church Regan Roberts Memorial Youth Basketball League February – Blythewood Historical Society & Museum Black History Month Celebration March – Blythewood Chamber of Commerce Ribfest (rib cooking competition at Doko Meadows Park), the Doko Film Festival (at area high school auditoriums), and the Park’s Hutto Memorial Golf Tournament at Cobblestone Golf Club April – The Blythewood Rodeo, the Blythewood High School Diamond Invitational Baseball Tournament, and Blythewood Farmers’ Market opens through November May – The Blythewood Chamber of Commerce Par 3 Palooza Golf Tournament (Cobblestone Golf Course), Memorial Day Observance (local area cemeteries) June – Dixie Youth Baseball & Softball District Tournaments at Blythewood Baseball Park July – Fourth of July Celebration Concert and Fireworks Display at Doko Meadows Park and Palmetto Citizens’ Federal Credit Union Amphitheater August – National Purple Heart Day Observance at Town Hall and the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association’s Open Tournament at Cobblestone Golf Club September – The Big Red Barn Retreat Concert, and the Big Grab 50-mile Yard Sale October – Blythewood Chamber of Commerce Oktoberfest and Volksmarch, the Blythewood (5A) High School Tournament of Bands, and the Westwood (4A) High School Tournament of Bands

November – Blythewood Historical Society & Museum Veterans’ Day Observance, Blythewood Artists’ Guild Holiday Market, and the Blythewood Rotary Club Christmas Tree Sale December – Town Christmas Tree Lighting at Town Hall, our annual Christmas Parade downtown, and the Westwood High School’s “Queens of the Castle” Ladies Basketball Invitational We have a beautiful, state-of-the-art events center, Doko Manor, which offers a great venue with 5000 square feet of usable interior space for weddings, family reunions, business meetings and cultural events. The park surrounding Doko Manor has a popular playground and a one-mile walking trail used by the community. Our new Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union Amphitheater was opened on October 26, 2017. The Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce hosts many business leaders who share their expertise with our community. The Chamber awards several graduating high school seniors with scholarships for college. Blythewood After Five also brings business and community members together to network using different business locations as the host sites. Our Historical Society and Museum is equally busy presenting the history of the area and sharing historical information with students and families. SC Humanities and the Smithsonian recently brought a traveling exhibit, “The Way We Worked” to the Historical Society allowing many people to view and appreciate it. The Rotary Club, Lion’s Club, Blythewood Masonic Lodge, the Christian Assistance Bridge and the Hope Optimist Club are some of the very active civic organizations bringing support in many areas to the citizens of Blythewood. Blythewood is home to many historic churches attended by generations of Blythewood families. Our local churches have many community events such as Friday Food Truck Night, Friday Movie Night, Trunk-or-Treat, and a “Back to School Bash.” The Knights of Columbus (Transfiguration Catholic Church) also serve as the event coordinators for our annual Blythewood Christmas Parade. Many of our churches will soon celebrate their 150th anniversaries! Blythewood is a town with many family restaurants and stores. Eight businesses in our town were recently highlighted in a Historical Society “Walking Retail Tour” telling the history of their origins. A replica of our old Town Depot building has been completed and is now open as a music business and café. Located along I-77 just 15 miles north of Columbia, SC and about an hour south of Charlotte, NC, Blythewood has always been attractive to families searching for the virtues of small-town living. Our town celebrates community diversity and the unique contributions each of us makes. Finally, just off I-77 at Exit 27, Blythewood has partnered with Richland County to set aside 1350 acres to be used as a light industrial park to attract industry-leading businesses and technical jobs to the Town. We have a big vision by anyone’s standards, with a detailed comprehensive, ten-year plan to get us there. We welcome you to discover Blythewood and enjoy our warm friendly attitude toward life and each other. If you would like to learn more about Blythewood, visit the Blythewood Town Hall Official website at www.townofblythewoodsc.gov, or like us on Facebook. We thank you for your interest in Blythewood, and remember, you are always welcome! With warmest regards,
Bryan S. Franklin Mayor, Town of Blythewood, SC

The Other Horse Country
W
hen you think about the traditional “Horse Country” of SC, often you will think of Camden or Aiken where people from all over the country will often come to foxhunt, race and train. However, Blythewood SC offers our own beautiful and picturesque equine lifestyle. The University of SC National Championship Equestrian Team makes their home here in Blythewood. Under the leadership of Coach Boo Major, the team, housed at One Wood Farm, has had three overall national championships in 2005, 2007, and 2015. Originally, the USC Team
One Wood Farm
was housed at a facility in Lower Richland County, but moved to One Wood Farm in the late 1990’s. Today, Coach Major wouldn’t have it any other way. She grew up in the area and feels that the community here provides a wonderful home for the members of the team. Nestled throughout Northeast Richland County, you will find multiple farms that offer a number of services for the beginner or casual rider, to the frequent show-jumping attendee and boarding services for horses. An afternoon drive down Langford or Syrup Mill roads will lead you to a few of them.

History of Blythewood
W
e haven’t always been Blythewood. The Langford Road crossing of the railroad is our point of origin. In the early 1850’s, the Charlotte and SC Railroad built a rail line connecting Columbia and Charlotte atop a natural ridge dividing the Catawba and Broad River water shed basins. At the critical 90-miles-from-Charlotte distance, a depot and refueling post sprung up at the Langford Road crossing. It is believed the area was named Doko in 1873, from an African word meaning “where the iron horse drinks.” A water tower and plentiful trees formed our skyline. Four years later, as the town grew up around the depot, the students at the Female Institute, a Christian school located just east of Sandy Level Church on property owned by the Bookhart family, suggested changing the area’s name to Blythewood. On Dec. 24, 1879, by an act of the SC General Assembly, the town was incorporated with official boundar-

ies of 1/4 mile radius from the depot. In the early days, railroad shipping consisted primarily of lumber, cordwood, shingles, pitch, tar, mineral spirits and cotton. More importantly, the railroad provided passenger service to and from the major cities that flank Blythewood and delivered products necessary to sustain the community around the depot. Early on, the town occupied the lower part of Fairfield County, but in 1913 the community was annexed into Richland County by petition. The historic Town Hall, built by George Hoffman in 1855, is the oldest house in Blythewood and, along with Doko Meadows Park, built in 2010, represents the historical and cultural heart of the community. Churches and schools have always been an important part of our community. Blythewood and Bethel Schools opened in the early 1900’s. In the early years, Sandy Level Baptist, Bethel Baptist, Trinity Methodist, and

St. Marks Lutheran provided spiritual guidance. Today, Blythewood has award-winning schools, vibrant faith communities, worldclass golf courses, and a freshly-constructed branch of the Richland County Public Library. Blythewood is, in essence, an old railroad town that developed into a great community with many civic-minded citizens. From the Doko depot origin story to our modern community celebrations, we value our historical assets and family traditions. Blythewood’s lasting prosperity is due to a blended community of families who have lived here for generations and newcomers who care deeply about our town. Photos courtesy historyofblythewood.com. George Peter Hoffman House (no. 1)
Walking Tour of Historic Blythewood
T
his self-guided walking tour begins and ends at the home of the Blythewood Historical Society & Museum at 100 McNulty St. Estimated walking time is approximately one hour and 45 minutes. For a shorter walk we recommend sites within the original town center (quarter-mile radius from the depot site).
1. George Peter Hoffman House, 171 Langford Rd. Now serving as Blythewood Town Hall, the Hoffman House is on the National Historic Register and is a designated Richland County Landmark. Built in 1833 by George Peter Hoffman for his bride Jane Ruff, the trees used in its construction are thought to be of the long leaf pine forest that covered what is now the town. Please note additional information on the historical marker.
2. Wooten-Proctor House, 175 Langford Rd. Built in 1925 in the Craftsman style, this is one of the earliest brick houses in Blythewood’s original town center.
3. Brookhard-Blume House, 193 Langford Rd. Miss Emily Bookhart’s father built this house for her in 1905, when she came to teach school in Blythewood. Students came to this house to register for school. While the interior has been modernized over the years,
18
the charm of a vernacular Southern cottage has been beautifully maintained.
6. Site of Doko Depot and Water Tank, 400 Main St.
4. Doko Meadows Town Park Archeological Site, 171 Landford Rd.
The first railroad from Coumbia to Charlotte was built in the 1850s. The depot was originally designated as the center of Blythewood, opened ca. 1870. The railroad through Blythewood was destroyed by General Blair’s Corps of the Northern Army February 20, 1865. Following the Civil War, the railroad was rebuilt and continued to be vital to this area. The deport served Blythewood for 98 years, providing freight shipment, ticket sales, passenger service, handling the U.S. mail and the Western Union Telegraph service. The depot gradually fell into disuse and was demolished June 20, 1968.
From June 9-11, 2009, an intensive Phase 1 archeological survey was conducted on the Hoffman House grounds. One excavation revealed a prehistoric site that appears to contain intact deposits. Deptford Check Stamped shards, quartz debitage and a Morrow Mountain projectile point, dating from the Middle Archaic and Early Woodland periods, were found in undisturbed contexts.
5. Original Blythewood School, 501 Main St. Initially, a wooden one-room school was on this site. In the 1920s, a two-story brick building and the auditorium on the left were erected. The original frame school was razed in 1939 and the gymnasium was added on the right as a Depression-era project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The two-story brick building was replaced in 1959 with the current one-story building. Blythewood School’s last graduating class received their diplomas in 1970. It housed Blythewood Elementary school from 1970 until 1991. In 1951, Blythewood School was one of the four schools that formed Richland School District Two. The small frame house to the right served in the past as the home of the school’s principal.

7. Langford-Wilson Community Store, 300 Main St. Built in 1914 by the Langford Brothers, this building has served as a general store, post office, barbershop and housed a doctor’s office. From the 1940s to the 1980s, Wilson’s Community Store was considered the heart of the town commercially, geographically and emotionally.
8. Langford-Nord House, 100 McNulty St. Built ca. 1904 by Luther Langford, it now houses the Blythewood Historical Society & Museum and is a designated Richland County Landmark. Originally, the front door of the house faced Hwy 21. Members of the Langford family lived in the home until April 1988 when the Langford’s daughter, Carolyn Dangler, sold the house

Originally located in the center of the business district of Blythewood on Hwy 21, it was built ca. 1912 by Miss Frances A. Powell, who used it as a post office until 1919. After 1919, the building was occupied by a grocery store and later by the post office in the early years of H.B. McLean’s term as postmaster. Then vacant from time to time, the Richland County Public Library had a branch there in the early 1940s. In 1952, Elton and George Frances Wilson opened Wilson’s Store, occupying the building until June 1958. The vacant building was then moved to the Wilson’s backyard at 110 McNulty St., where it remains today.

Bethel Baptist Church, constructed in 1884, is a designated Richland County Landmark. It began as a “brush arbor” church — the congregation first met in a lean-to structure covered with brush. This practice was common in the 1700-1800s, as churches were sometimes established before congregations had the resources to build a structure. Bethel gave a portion of their land in the early 1900s to build Bethel School for AfricanAmerican children in the area and was the forerunner of today’s Bethel-Hanberry School. In 1951, it became one of the four founding schools of Richland School District Two. Please note additional information on the historical marker.
Built ca. 1915, Elizabeth Hogan Jeffares and her four children moved into this house following the death of her husband. To support the family, Mrs. Jeffars opened a boarding house and continued to keep boarders until 1943. Most were teachers and administrators at Blythewood School, but railroad employees, business people and a few newlywed couples also boarded there. In 1942, when military training maneuvers were being conducted in the countryside around Blythewood, then Lt. Winthrop Rockefeller was one of several officers who occasionally ate supper there.
14. Trinity United Methodist Church, corner of Blythewood and Boney Roads
The church was organized in 1885, and the first building erected in 1890, about three miles west of Blythewood on Blythewood Road. A cemetery located behind that church still remains. This church was relocated to its present site in 1930. Its unique stained glass windows are the oldest of any church in the area. These memorial windows are dedicted to individuals and families important to the church.

Mrs. Clara Booney Martin operated “The Clara Shop” in the 1950s. It was well-known for Mrs. Clara’s delicious “take out” hamburgers, hot dogs and fried fruit pies. For more than 20 years, the shop was a landmark nestled in the shade of a big sycamore tree on Wilson Blvd. (Hwy 21) in the center of Blythewood. Originally mercantile stores, 208 was a convenience store, offically named “De Sto.” Used for a variety of purposes over the years, both structures are a significant visual feature of the original town center.
18. Site of the Railroad Loading Platform, 158 Langford Rd. When trains stopped at Doko Depot, supplies that had been ordered were unloaded here. Area farmers brought cotton bales, timber, turpentine and other agricultural products here for loading and delivery to their customers.
19. Boney Hykil House, 162 Langford Rd. Built in 1859, this is one of the oldest houses in the original town center. It has been well maintained and is close to its original condition. It has served as a family home, a printing shop for local poet J. Gordon Coogler, a gift shop, and a business office. A National Geographical Marker is embedded in the chimney that reads “1900504.002,” marking the elevation above sea level of the area. The large cedar tree fronting on Langford Road is one of the focal points of the town’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting event.

oko Manor first opened in March, 2013. Located in 22-acre Doko Meadows Park, the Manor features over 5000 square feet of usable interior event space as well as spacious front porches, two picturesque back porches complete with rocking chairs, and a beautiful outside pergola bordering a small, scenic lake. There are two origins for the name “Doko.” One story suggests Doko is an Indian name meaning “watering place.” Another claims Doko was an African name meaning “where the iron horse drinks.” Either origin is appropriate as in its earliest days, the Doko site was a stopover for steam engines taking on water and fuel. A wooden tower held the water, a feature of the Blythewood skyline, until steam engines were retired and the stopover became obsolete. A picture of the old water tower adorns the wall at Doko Manor. Doko Manor is available to host social and business events including

Beginning with an evening of Jazz in the Park, continuing with Movies in the Park over the weekend, and a Battle of the Bands concert early Monday, the park and amphitheater held more than 5,000 citizens and visitors during the Great North American Eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017. The Town of Blythewood is delighted to partner with the Blythewood Garden Club for Adopt a Tree at the Doko Meadows Park. Individuals, families and organizations can plant a tree to commemorate a special person, memory, or occasion. The playground for kids, sturdy wooden dock, or the shaded banks of the lake all provide lovely spots for an afternoon picnic. Doko Meadows is truly one our town’s most beautiful spots!
