Cash Out Some anti-heroes can be quite likeable our protagonist Dan Jordan is not in that category. As this tale begins, we find him being prepped for his vasectomy, and there's perhaps some brief male empathy there, but it doesn't last long. Dan is a vested employee of FlowBid, a Silicon Valley startup that has gone through some wild growth in that landscape occupied by Google, Facebook, NetApp and others, and is enjoying the benefits of the second Internet boom. His master plan is to let his stock options vest and cash out for a million plus, then drop his two-week notice on them like a bombshell.
Cat's Claw (A Pecan Springs Mystery) I'm a long-time fan of the China Bayles series by Albert and while she is still featured in this new series, the focus is on Sheila Dawson as she navigates her role as the new police chief amidst a murder investigation. She is a strong character, so it works to have the series shift to her while maintaining China's presence. Even though I guessed who the killer was before it was revealed, the story kept me interested as the details of motive and possible accomplices were worked out in the end. It was easy to read in a weekend while still having the kind of substantial storyline I've come to expect from the author. As always, the herbal facts sprinkled into the storyline were interesting.
Churchill's Hour: A Novel of Defiance Here, the time frame is Christmas Day 1940 to December 11, 1941. In that period, John Winant replaces Joseph Kennedy as U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James, Averell Harriman arrives in Britain as America's Lend-Lease administrator, London is blitzed, HMS Hood is traded for the KMS Bismarck, Churchill has his first summit with FDR, Deputy Fuehrer Rudolf Hess crash lands his plane in Scotland, Rommel debarks in North Africa, Germany assaults Russia, Japan attacks Pearl Harbor and sinks HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, and America and Britain declare war on Japan. Finally, Hitler declares war against the former and Winston can sleep more easily. All through 1940, England has barely been able to hang on and Churchill is desperate for America to enter the conflict Roosevelt is infuriatingly elusive on the subject.
Citadel In CITADEL, Kate Mosse once again sets out to captivate the reader with the people at the heart of ancient struggles, to bring alive places and times unknown to us and to keep us on the edge of our seats with an amazing story.
Close to the Heel No one is more surprised than Rennie to hear that his late grandfather, whom he hardly knew, has left a mission for him to fulfill. Rennie is to fly to Iceland and deliver a message from beyond the grave, but when he gets there, nothing is simple or straightforward. For one thing, Brynja, the teenage daughter of the family he's staying with, is downright hostile. Her father Einar, who is to be Rennie's guide in Iceland, is preoccupied with looking after his elderly father-inlaw, an old friend of Rennie's grandfather. Bored and a little bit annoyed, Rennie explores the town and becomes aware that the family is dealing with more than their grief over Brynja's mother's death the year before. Before he realizes what is happening, his curiosity puts Rennie in grave danger, with no one to trust and no one to save him except himself.

Comanche Moon I don't know if McMurtry is getting lazy. I don't know if he simply doesn't give a damn about whether or not readers care. In the end, it really doesn't matter as he still can deliver page turners with the best of them. And by the the time you finish Comanche Moon, you realize that the changes in Gus and Call's history, changes that can make rereading Lonesome Dove jarring, are for the best. This is how he should have set up their pasts in Dove. It a richer, more poignant past for Gus and Call than what was alluded to in that Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
Confessions of a Falling Woman: And Other Stories Debra Dean has offered a collection of unique short stories that causes one to turn the page eager to read the next line still hoping that the little book will never end! What a thrill to find such an intimate group of tales that carry her beautiful voice to the reader, much as she was able to do in her novel, "Madonnas of Leningrad". I anxiously await her next offering. Her ideas are fresh and her experiences somewhat unique despite the fact that many of her readers can relate to them. The language itself is never stale and her imagery often beautiful and moving. She truly has her own "voice". She brings us wonderful insight through her stories that I am sure is somewhat rooted in her own experience. Brava!
Dead Man's Walk
Larry McMurtry's Dead Man's Walk, the original perquel to Lonesome Dove, features that book's main characters when they were just youngsters and had first joined the Texas Rangers. Like Lonesome Dove, it is a big book with a lot of characters and a lot of action, but it differs significantly in that there is very little humor and the character's stories don't mesh into any coherent plot line or ultimate resolution. It is in essence a picaresque novel that kind of wanders around - as do the characters in the story. While Call and Gus are shown to have the beginnings of the personalities that would endear them to Lonesome Dove readers, they are also shown as having little depth and no experience. They really are clueless. And pitted against the merciless indians they face it is a miracle that they survive. Of course they have to for the sake of the story but it isn't any talent or savvy on their own part that makes survival possible. Despite its limitations, this is still a very interesting book. The action is quite satisfying even if the characters are not.
Death Takes Wing Leaving the force was the only way for Amalia to forget the memories of her brother's death. When her best friend goes missing, she needs to brush up on forgotten skills to find Samantha before she ends up like her brother. Teaming up with the dark angel Gabriel, Amalia confronts the demons of the past to rescue not only Samantha, but other humans forced to change into angels as a cruel experiment.
Dick Francis's Gamble That wasn't my take on it at first. The first couple dozen pages or so, involving an execution-style murder at the Grand National, seemed sort of same old/same old. But once the tale left the track and jumped into the world of international internet gambling, Bulgarian hit men and independent financial advisors (the current profession of our hero, a former jockey who'd broken his neck near the finish line a few years ago and could never ride again), we were off to the races with a fresh, complex and cleverly crafted nail-biter of a thriller. "Couldn't put it down" has become such a cliche on these pages and I'm a bit embarrassed to see myself using it, except that it really and truly does apply here for me and I suspect it will do the same for you. The Francis family business seems to be in very good hands indeed.

Disastrous Mia is a brilliant Harvard law student who goes to work at the top, prestigious law firm in Boston. She has had many losses in her life, but is managing quite well on her own. She meets Marcus the rich, gorgeous, successful, young senior partner/owner at the law firm under less than professional circumstances and the roller coaster ride begins. As they get to know each other you glimpse the mystery of Marcus and know that there is something else going on.
Distress Egan's novels are pretty good but his short stories are really excellent. It's interesting that, although "Distress" is a novel, it opens with a series of interviews (the protagonist is a journalist), each one of which is like a mini-short story about some aspect of biotechnology. This plays to Egan's strength: idea, idea, idea. However, after a while the story settles down to the central plot, about a theoretical physicist whose life is endangered by a lunatic group with some strange ideas about cosmology. I strongly recommend this book.
Diverse Energies In this stunning collection of original and rediscovered stories of tragedy and hope, the stars are a diverse group of students, street kids, good girls, kidnappers, and child laborers pitted against their environments, their governments, differing cultures, and sometimes one another as they seek answers in their dystopian worlds. Take a journey through time from a nuclear nightmare of the past to society’s far future beyond Earth with these eleven stories by masters of speculative fiction. Includes stories by Paolo Bacigalupi, Ursula K. Le Guin, Malinda Lo, Cindy Pon, Daniel H. Wilson, and more.
East of the Mountains I just finished listening to Don Hastings' reading of "East of the Mountains" and felt compelled to write an on-line review for the first time ever. Maybe it was the excellent reading skills of Mr. Hastings or maybe because it has been a while since I read "Snow Falling on Cedars" that I thoroughly enjoyed wandering and wondering through this thoughtprovoking tale of one man's search for meaning in his life and/or his imminent death. Or maybe it is because I listened to the bulk of the story while walking my dog in Western Washington that I felt the full significance of Ben Givens' quest, for surely this tale is a hero's quest. Ben may not be all that endearing at times, but neither was Odysseus. Guterson may have included graphic details to the point that many people were turned off by the images, but so did Hemingway. Did anyone else get the religious symbolism in Ben's venturing into "the wilderness" and in the group of "wanderers" that accompanied him as he "healed" those along the way? And what about the symbolism of "going over the mountain" from an area of lush life to a place more desolate and lonely?
Elvis Takes a Back Seat ELVIS TAKES A BACK SEAT was an unexpected pleasure to read. In addition to telling a good story, the book carries readers on a roller coaster ride that covers the full spectrum of emotions. Leanna Ellis has created an interesting group of characters and then, like peeling back layers of an onion, she slowly reveals more and more about their lives, their secrets, and their innermost fears. The characters are genuine, flawed, and colorful, making it easy to empathize with their struggles. Elvis represents so many things in ELVIS TAKES A BACK SEAT, from letting go of the past, having faith, and the struggle between our human nature and our spiritual nature yet the story is so much bigger. This book is poignant display of how family secrets, doubt, fear, rejection, and even love impact each of us. Finally, ELVIS TAKES A BACK SEAT is a testament to the goodness of God's grace.

Falling to Ash I truly loved this book. Moth is a spectacular heroine, brave with a smart mouth but extremely caring when it comes to people she cares about. She's not happy about what she is but accepts that she has to get on with it. Despite Jace being a hunter, she can't help but find him attractive. He is definitely swoonworthy. While a romance doesn't actually take off between the two, the tension is there and when the two of them are together were probably my favourite times in the book.
Finding Hannah John Kess has taken a subject that is unfortunately too familiar to us all, and handled it with gentleness, wisdom, and compassion. He allowed us a glimpse into the lives of a family torn apart by kidnapping and the internal struggles of family members and friends as they embark on a search with an uncertain outcome. Mr. Kess shows much promise as a young author, and I look forward to his next novel
Forbidden The Bodywalkers are a fascinating race of Nightwalkers. They're ancient Egyptians who, thanks to the mummification, have their souls sent into the Ether, an in-between place where their soul wait for a human to share their body with them. The two souls learn to live side by side and work off each other rather than having one take over the other. In exchange, the human host comes back to life with supernatural abilities and becomes a Bodywalker. If a dying human is unfortunate enough to come in contact with a Templar soul, priests and priestesses of Egyptians who believe they should be in power and are the enemies of the Bodywalkers, they could end up being forcefully suppressed as their body is taken over.
God, If You're Not Up There, I'm F*cked: Tales of Stand-Up, Saturday Night Live, and Other Mind-Altering Mayhem This was one of the best memoirs I have ever read. Darrell allows us into his brilliant and troubled mind, showing us the painful results of serious child abuse. The writing, itself, is spellbinding and funny. I loved reading about the insides of SNL and how difficult it is to actually put on a show. Never have I sensed the chaos and last minute changes that Darrell allows us to see. I have even more respect for all the SNL cast and employees as a result.
Here Come the Black Helicopters!: UN Global Governance and the Loss of Freedom Morris and McGann's latest production is more of a wake up call than a political treatise. The concept of a global government is not new, it has been bantered about since the 19th century, first by Prince Metternich after the defeat of Napoleon, then by the formation of the League of Nations and its more recent interpretation, the United Nations. The world has been inching towards a universal state since after WWll vis. International banking, mulinational corporations, the Common Market and the European Union. In case a World Government were to become a reality, the balance of power would shift away from the USA to a conglomerate of pseudo-liberal, socialist/communist, undemocratic and/or totalitarian countries and their vassal states that presently vote as a block in the U.N. consistently to frustrate the USA at every opportunity.

Hidden Depths This is my second Cleeves novel featuring DI Vera Stanhope, the first being Silent Voices, and I must admit that this series is becoming a firm favorite. DI Stanhope is razor-sharp and an astute judge of people, though she herself is not your typical heroine. Stanhope is not glamorous nor even charismatic, she is dumpy, overweight, and can judge people too harshly, yet her excellent deductive skills make up for these flaws as she goes about solving murder mysteries.
Ireland Frank Delaney's IRELAND is true to this tradition: in both form and content, IRELAND is a tale spun robust and ranging. History and fable merge in this grand story narrated in part by a Seanchai, a traveling storyteller who finds a willing ear in Ronan O'Mara, a nine-year-old boy living in the Irish countryside. Ronan has heard from his father of such people, who entrance folk with larger-than-life yarns in exchange for a seat by a fire and a home-cooked meal. And entrance Ronan he does. The storyteller so influences and inspires young Ronan that he devotes his life to finding him and to seeking out the truths behind the stories.
I'll Go Home Then, It's Warm and Has Chairs: The Unpublished Emails
The book is small, around 180 pages. I was expecting the book to last longer than a single day, but since 2/3 of the book is either stuff posted on the website or graphic "comics" with cats featuring 6 word bubbles per page, it didn't work out that way.

Naked Cruelty: A Carmine Delmonico Novel The latest Delmonico historical police procedural (see On, Off and Too Many Murders) provides readers with what went on inside a New England precinct during the tumultuous late 1960s. Carmine is an honest cop who expects the same ethical behavior from those who work for him when he finds someone who fails to attain and maintain his standard, he scrutinizes their every move to improve their standard of conduct and performance. He has so many issues at the station (and at home), he delays his look at the information provided by Maggie until late in the story line thus adding realism to a strong 1968 investigative thriller.
Our Tragic Universe I was puzzled by Meg's relationship with Christopher. She's living for seven years with this loser who treats her with no respect. Abuse, is more like it. And we have no clue until near the end of the book as to why Meg ever took up with this schlmiel (he's angular and sexy, whatever that means). But why does she stay with him? She's a very "together" person, she's making a living as a writer, she's quite an admirable person in some ways. She certainly has a good relationship with her dog. So why does it take her SO LONG to deal with it? Another thing that puzzled me was why everyone in the book was having an affair. Is everyone in Britain morally bankrupt? Or is this just some chicklit convention I'm not aware of? Of relationships and such, Meg is mostly mum. We don't really know, often, what her reaction is to an event, such as her boyfriend saying something abusive. She'll just carry on by taking the dog for a walk, and never mentioning the conversation again, or until later. She withholds her thoughts and feelings at odd times, and tells us the backstories of the other characters in a seemingly haphazard way. But she's such a good writer that I'm sure all of this was done on purpose, and I'm not smart enough to get it. I would've enjoyed the book more had it explored the pseudo-science bits more. It seems to be more than psuedo in the book, and yet in the end, we have a "Zeb Ross" ending, where all is explained rationally away (you'll know what I mean when you read the book) at the end by the scientists.
Silent Voices: A Thriller The story is revealed layer by layer and it's a twisty psychological puzzle that will keep readers guessing up to the very end. Fans of Minette Walters and Ruth Rendell should enjoy Silent Voices. Vera is addictive so don't be surprised if you want to read all the books in this series.
Stolen: A Novel of Romantic Suspense Then Shay finds out someone is trying to take over the life she has built for herself. They have been signing her books, setting up a Facebook page, a twitter account and a blog. Then they cross the line, they bring Elliot into and threaten his lively hood by accusing him of rape. There are so many twists and turns in this book. It started out kind of slow, but then the twists started coming and my head was spinning. Shay is a very strong woman. Anyone who could go through everything she has and come out sane has to be. She sees herself as a coward though. Most people would just crumble if they had that much crap coming at them, and coming from all different directions.

Telling Tales It's been ten long years since Jeanie Long has been locked up for the murder of teenager Abigail Mantel. Ten long years, and now evidence has come forward that proves Jeanie's innocence. The villagers of Elvet on the East Yorkshire coast know this means Abigail's killer is still at large. The Dead Room Teddy Mack, a young attorney at the Barnett & Stokes Law Firm, specializing in corporate law, is asked to defend the accused by the firm's senior partner, even though Mack has no experience as a defense attorney. Because of past personal issues, Mack is revolted by criminal law, and is reluctant to take the case. However, the request is made by
his mentor, which makes it difficult to turn down. He is basically told that all he will be asked to do, since the defendant obviously committed the heinous crime, is to eliminate the death penalty as an option and make sure that the accused is sentenced to life in an institution for the criminally insane, as opposed to the state penitentiary.
The Madonnas of Leningrad As a young woman, Marina worked as a museum guide at the Hermitage in Leningrad. During the 900 days of siege, the city residents faced devastation, starvation, and cold. The Hermitage's basement became Marina's refuge. The empty picture frames gracing its exhibition halls contained echoes of its former art, providing a distraction that helped Marina survive the horrors of war. Now living in Seattle, Marina is an elderly woman who is sinking into dementia. About to attend her granddaughter's wedding, her past overtakes the present and she is living in a muddled world of war, beauty, and the struggle for survival.

The Other What I liked: each of the scenes in the mountains with his eccentric and then bewildering friend, John William the scenes in his classroom (too brief, wanted more, but then I too was a high school teacher) the trek through Europe and Neil's falling in love and early relationship. The reality of how poor many people were in that era as they struggled their way through college was very true to life, and Neil's commentaries on a variety of poets interested me as well.
The Philosopher Prince Paul Waters does it again with the "Philosopher Prince" He paints a detailed and accurate picture of life in the 4th Century world at the nadir of the Roman Empire. The main characters are well drawn and the portrait of the Emperor Julian before he took the throne is very interesting. Don't read this book if you feel that Christianity could do no wrong. You will get a very opposite view but fascinating none the less.
The Rembrandt Secret Alexandra Connor has done a good job! I picked up this book without even knowing it was written by Alexandra Connor. I thought it was written by a guy named Alex Connor, who I'd never heard of before. As I read on, I realised that this has to be written by an experienced writer. That she is. In the post-Dan Brown age, a novel on art history is bound to draw attention, and I hope this book gets all the attention it deserves. I haven't read her other works, especially the ones on Rembrandt's monkey, and it's possible that she has a grudge against Rembrandt. But this book made me think, perhaps, it's true. I'm a big fan of 17-18th century Dutch art, and I was in home territory as far as this novel is concerned. I never thought Carel Fabritius was a minor Dutch artist, he was quite big in his own right. But maybe not an old master.
The Shoestring Club
Join The Shoestring Club When the love of her life, Ed, announces his surprise engagement to her best friend, Julia Schuster is distraught but determined not to let them see how much she’s hurting. She spies a remarkable dress in Shoestring, her sister’s designer second-hand shop, and knows she’ll only be able to stagger through the wedding day, showing everyone how over Ed she is, if her body is wrapped in its soft silk chiffon. Unfortunately it costs mega bucks and she’s barely hanging on to her job as it is. Arietty Pilgrim can’t and won’t attend her fiercely competitive school reunion unless she can arrive wearing exactly the same dress. But working as an elephant keeper in Dublin Zoo does not a millionaire make. But fate has a funny way of bringing people together. Just as Julia starts to flounder amidst family troubles, problem drinking and a broken heart, she meets Arietty and the two of them set up The Shoestring Club time-sharing one extraordinary dress and beginning a life-altering friendship.
The Vampire Next Door This was a charming and sweet romance. It was heart warming to read Morgaine's courage as she fights her phobias to help Sly. Both Sly and Morgaine are bit shy, socially awkward, and lonely. They like each other but are afraid to make the first move and don't want to lose a good friendship. But when they do get together, it is very steamy. Thanks goodness for the meddling matchmakers in the story who add humor and keeps pushing them together! I particularly liked the mischievous ghost Chad. I hope he will have his own story?! This book returns to prior characters and I liked revisiting Merry but it is not necessary to have read the prior books.

Through the Door I was pulled into the story immediately and I couldn't put it down. It didn't take me long to finish this book and I will be anxiously waiting for the next book in the trilogy to come out. I am a sucker for any kind of story with Celtic lore in it. I
always have been drawn to it ever since I started reading Nora Roberts Celtic Trilogies over 10 years ago. The world that Jodi has started to build in the series is a fresh new take, at least for me. She does such a wonderful job with her descriptions that you are pulled right into the story along with Cedar.
Undead "Undead" is biography and literary criticism, exploring Stoker's life and the inspiration for his most famous novel. When first published in the United States in 1899, the "San Francisco Chronicle" called "Dracula" among "most powerful novels of the day." It sold well in Europe and America and has been selling consistently since. Its first 50 pages, Delaney says, give us the template for most all vampire stuff of modern times.
Winter's End This novel was brilliant. I loved every moment of it. There was never a dull moment. This book was fast-paced and kept me wanting more until there was no more left to read. My only disappointment was the Epilogue, but only because it didn't explain much about Helen, so I was somewhat confused after reading it. Various parts of the novel seemed awful. Not bad awful, just awful. I couldn't believe how adults could be so rude to teens, just because of their parents! All in all, I enjoyed this book a lot. It wasn't the type of story I normally read, but I was pleasantly surprised by it.
Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft The book itself was light, with its serious hues. Which I really enjoyed and is what a lot of people enjoy reading in the summer. It really worked with Audrey's attitude and vulnerablility. The plot started off as simple and became more intricate and complicated as the story went on while keeping the light fun tone that made it easy to read. What I loved most was the end. So many times in books I feel so confused at the main climax. The author gets so excited, and has so much to say and so much going on at once, that it doesn't come across well. I understood every second of the climax in this book and didn't feel confused at all. I think this will really help when I read the sequel.
Battle Fatigue Growing up in the years following World War II, Joel Bloom and his friends dreamed of either fighting in the military or leading the Dodgers to the World Series. But when Joel turns eighteen, the Vietnam War is in full swing, and the sides of war he learned about as a child are not nearly as clear. Old enough to be drafted, Joel loves his country but knows he cannot fight in an unjust war. After trying and failing to be a Conscientious Objector, he must decide whether to serve in Vietnam or leave for Canada-a decision that would help him avoid the violence of war but force him to leave behind those he loves and turn his back on everything he was brought up to believe. In an insightful and compelling novel from bestselling nonfiction writer Mark Kurlansky comes an exploration of one teen's struggle to understand himself amid the harsh realities of life during wartime.

Beyond Armageddon Content aside, Beyond Armageddon makes for a pretty breezy read in spite of its length, since the author sticks to a very clear and concise writing style that lends itself well to clear mental imagery. There are loads of interesting characters, running the gamut from down-to-earth, quirky, badass, or just plain weird, but almost all of them get at least a little development. There's also some fairly sharp social commentary to be found here, but thankfully it never gets bogged down with the sort of agenda-driven preachiness so many other stories are guilty of.
Blue Moon Bay Lisa Wingate, author extraordinaire has done it again!!!! She's written a book that brings real life to the surface. Blue Moon Bay is about Heather Hampton returning to a place she couldn't wait to get away from...Home. A lot of us can identify with this feeling. The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution 2009 | ISBN-10: 1416594787, 1416594795 | PDF | 480 pages | 23 Richard Dawkins transformed our view of God in his blockbuster, The God Delusion, which sold more than 2 million copies in English alone. He revolutionized the way we see natural selection in the seminal bestseller The Selfish Gene. Now, he launches a fierce counterattack against proponents of "Intelligent Design" in his latest New York Times bestseller, The Greatest Show on Earth. "Intelligent Design" is being taught in our schools; educators are being asked to "teach the controversy" behind evolutionary theory. There is no controversy. Dawkins sifts through rich layers of scientific evidence—from living examples of natural selection to clues in the fossil record; from natural clocks that mark the vast epochs wherein evolution ran its course to the intricacies of developing embryos; from plate tectonics to molecular genetics—to make the airtight case that "we find ourselves perched on one tiny twig in the midst of a blossoming and flourishing tree of life and it is no accident, but the direct consequence of evolution by non-random selection." His unjaded passion for the natural world turns what might have been a negative argument, exposing the absurdities of the creationist position, into a positive offering to the reader: nothing less than a master’s vision of life, in all its splendor.

The Enemy I Knew: German Jews in the Allied Military in World War II
2009 | ISBN-10: 0760335869 | EPUB | 320 pages | 5 MB Even Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Prize winning survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, struggles with the question: Why didn’t the Jews fight back? And finally, in view of the circumstances--even now, who would believe what was happening?--he concludes that the question is “not why all the Jews did NOT fight, but how do many of them DID. Tormented, beaten, starved, where did they find the strength--spiritual and physical--to resist?” In fact, over 10,000 German Jews—34 percent of the refugee population between the ages of eighteen and forty—fought in the allied armies of World War II. This book honors those European-born Jewish combat veterans of World War II--refugees from the Nazi regime in Germany and Austria who faced their persecutors by joining the Allied Forces in a fight against the country of their birth. These twenty-seven interviews take readers into the unique and harrowing experience of German and Austrian Jews who served as Allied soldiers in North Africa and Europe--brave men and one woman whose service restored a sense of dignity and allowed them to rise above their former victimization at the hands of Nazi oppressors. All burned with anger at the Germans who had subjected them, often as young children, to cruelty in everyday life in their hometowns, and to ridicule in the national media. As soldiers who knew the language and psychology of the enemy better than any of their comrades, they struck back with new-found pride against the rampant injustice that had annihilated their families, destroyed their prospects, and subjected many of them to the worst forms of physical abuse, both random and terrifying. In The Enemy I Knew they tell their stories, and the world is richer for their heroic acts, and for their testimony.
Hitler's Priestess: Savitri Devi, the Hindu-Aryan Myth, and Neo-Nazism 2000 | ISBN-10: 0814731112 | 280 pages | PDF | 4 MB In this window onto the roots and evolution of international neo-Nazism, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke reveals the powerful impact of one of fascism's most creative minds. Savitri Devi's influence on neo-Nazism and other hybrid strains of mystical fascism has been continuos since the mid1960s. A Frenchwoman of Greek-English birth, Devi became an admirer of German National Socialism in the late 1920s. Deeply impressed by its racial heritage and caste-system, she emigrated to India, where she developed her racial ideology, in the early 1930s. Her works have been reissued and distributed through various neo-Nazi networks and she has been lionized as a foremother of Nazi ideology. Her appeal to neo-Nazi sects lies in the very eccentricity of her thought - combining Aryan supremacism and anti-Semitism with Hinduism, social Darwinisn, animal rights, and a fundamentally biocentric view of life - and has resulted in curious, yet potent alliances in radical ideology. As one of the earliest Holocaust deniers and the first to suggest that Adolf Hitler was an avatar-- a god come to earth in human form to restore the world to a golden age - Devi became a fixture in the shadowy neo-Nazi world. In Hitler's Priestess, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke examines how someone with so little tangible connection to Nazi Germany became such a powerful advocate of Hitler's misanthropy. Hitler's Priestess illuminates the life of a woman who achieved the status of a prophetess for her penchant for redirecting authentic religious energies in the service of regenerate fascism.
The Face of the Third Reich 1995 | ISBN-10: 0140166947 | PDF | 605 pages | 4 MB Michael Burleigh's recent work "The Third Reich - A New History" was widely praised for its novel explanation of Nazism in the context of religion. Anyone who has read Joachim Fest's excellent book however will, among other things, know that this particular analysis was hardly new or innovative. In form, The Face of the Third Reich is a psychological profile of both individual Nazi leaders and various sections of German society at the time. Through this approach though, the main causes of the rise of Hitler and the Nazis are explained. Among other things, Fest lucidly illustrates the essential nihilism of the Nazi movement, whose ideology as such was based on the acquisition of power as as end rather than a means. The vacuous adoration of and devotion to Hitler was in itself a cornerstone of Nazi philosophy, the Fuhrer cult providing the basis for Fest's religious analogies. He also discusses how initially vague assertions of Aryan superiority and Semitic evil were later focused after the seizure of power and developed and expanded on by Himmler and the SS. The portraits of the main personalities are fascinating. Fest is invariably amazed by how such unremarkable individuals were able to attain such immense power and commit such extravagent atrocities. He shows how almost all were linked by a moral corruption and a cynical lust for power. The chapter on Rudolf Hoss, the commandant of Auschwitz is particularly arresting. Reading this, one is reminded of Orwell's 1984 and the ability of man to subjugate himself to authority and in turn to deceive himself into committing the most unfathomable crimes. Fest is one of the foremost German authorities on Nazism and the book throughout is filled with an intellectual disgust and contempt of the regime. For anyone trying to make sense of that period, this book must be read.
Einstein: His Life and Universe
2007 | ISBN-10: 0743264738 | EPUB, MOBI | 704 pages | 5 MB By the author of the acclaimed bestseller Benjamin Franklin, this is the first full biography of Albert Einstein since all of his papers have become available. How did his mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson's biography shows how his scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom. Based on newly released personal letters of Einstein, this book explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk - a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn't get a teaching job or a doctorate -- became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals. These traits are just as vital for this new century of globalization, in which our success will depend on our creativity, as they were for the beginning of the last century, when Einstein helped usher in the modern age.

Travelling Heroes: Greeks and Their Myths in the Epic Age of Homer 2010 | ISBN-10: 0679763864 | EPUB, MOBI | 496 pages | 10 + 10 MB This remarkable and daringly original book proposes a new way of thinking about the Greeks and their myths in the age of the great Homeric hymns. It combines a lifetime's familiarity with Greek literature and history with the latest archeological discoveries and the author's own journeys to the main sites in the story to describe how particular Greeks of the eighth century BC travelled east and west around the Mediterranean, and how their extraordinary journeys shaped their ideas of their gods and heroes. Oxford classicist Fox explores the 700s BCE, the century to which he imputes the composition of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Explaining that this was an era of cultural contact between Greeks—specifically, those from the island Euboea—and residents of the eastern littoral of the Mediterranean Sea, he delves deeply into the nature of that exchange. Aiming to evoke the Euboeans’ mind-set, he springs from the archaeological traces of their settlements to the gods and heroes of the Near East they adapted into their own myths. While there is considerable textual explication of Homer and Hesiod involved in Fox’s procedure, he pulls the mythical characters from the pages and places them in the physical landscapes with which the Euboeans not only associated them but believed they actively inhabited. So doing lends the appealing impetus of travel writing to Fox’s account that aids readers in absorbing the world of pagan belief. Detailed but recurrently on point, Fox will connect with readers drawn to the Homeric age.
The Jungle Effect: A Doctor Discovers the Healthiest Diets from Around the World -Why They Work and How to Bring Them Home English | 2008-05-01 | ISBN: 0061535656 | 384 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Pizza, pasta, hamburgers, sushi, tacos, and french fries . . . whether our ancestors were born in Madrid, Malaysia, or Mexico, chances are our daily food choices come from all around the globe. Unfortunately, we have taken some of the worst aspects of our varied ancestral menus to turn healthy cuisine into not-so-healthy junk food. Where did we go wrong? Why is it that non-Western immigrants are so much more susceptible to diabetes and other diet-related chronic diseases than white Americans? How is it possible that relatively poor native populations in Mexico and Africa have such low levels of the chronic diseases that plague the United States? What is the secret behind the extremely low rate of clinical depression in Iceland—a country where dreary weather is the norm? The Jungle Effect has the lifechanging answers to these important questions, and many more. Dr. Daphne Miller undertook a worldwide quest to find diets that are both delicious and healthy. Written in a style reminiscent of Michael Pollan and Barbara Kingsolver, this book is filled with inspiring stories from Dr. Miller's patients, quirky travel adventures, interviews with world-renowned food experts, delicious (yet authentic) indigenous recipes, and valuable diet secrets that will stick with you for a lifetime. Whether it's the heart-healthy Cretan diet, with its reliance on olive oil and fresh vegetables; the antidepression Icelandic diet and its extremely high levels of Omega 3s; the age-defying Okinawa diet and its emphasis on vegetables and fish; or the other diets explored herein, everyone who reads this book will come away with the secrets of a longer, healthier life and the recipes necessary to put those secrets into effect.
Seeing Further: The Story of Science, Discovery, and the Genius of the Royal Society English | ISBN: 0061999768 | 2010 | 512 pages | EPUB, MOBI | 3 MB Edited and introduced by Bill Bryson, with original contributions from "a glittering array of scientific writing talent" (Sunday Observer) including Richard Dawkins, Margaret Atwood, Richard Holmes, Martin Rees, Richard Fortey, Steve Jones, James Gleick, and Neal Stephenson, among others, this incomparable book tells the spectacular story of science and the international Royal Society, from 1660 to the present. Seeing Further is also gorgeously illustrated with photographs, documents, and treasures from the Society's exclusive archives. On a damp weeknight in November three hundred and fifty years ago, a dozen men gathered in London. After hearing an obscure twenty-eight-year-old named Christopher Wren lecture on the wonders of astronomy, his rapt audience was moved to create a society to promote the accumulation of useful—and fascinating—knowledge. At that, the Royal Society was born, and with it, modern science. Since then, the Royal Society has pioneered global scientific exploration and discovery. Its members have split the atom, discovered the double helix and the electron, and given us the computer and the World Wide Web. Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Robert Hooke, Robert Boyle, Joseph Banks, Humphry Davy, John Locke, Alexander Fleming, Stephen Hawking—all have been fellows. Bill Bryson's favorite fellow is the Reverend Thomas Bayes, a brilliant mathematician who devised Bayes' theorem. Its complexity meant that it had little practical use in Bayes' own lifetime, but today his theorem is used for weather forecasting, astrophysics, and even stock-market analysis. A milestone in mathematical history, it exists only because the Royal Society decided to preserve it—just in case.
Truly global in its outlook, the Royal Society now is credited with creating modern science. Seeing Further is an unprecedented celebration of its history and the power of ideas, bringing together the very best of science writing.
Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, and Luck, Why Some Thrive Despite Them All English | ISBN: 0062120999 | 2011 | EPUB + MOBI | 320 pages | 5 MB Ten years after the worldwide bestseller Good to Great, Jim Collins returns with another groundbreaking work, this time to ask: Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not? Based on nine years of research, buttressed by rigorous analysis and infused with engaging stories, Collins and his colleague, Morten Hansen, enumerate the principles for building a truly great enterprise in unpredictable, tumultuous, and fast-moving times. The new study Great by Choice distinguishes itself from Collins’s prior work by its focus not just on performance, but also on the type of unstable environments faced by leaders today. With a team of more than twenty researchers, Collins and Hansen studied companies that rose to greatness—beating their industry indexes by a minimum of ten times over fifteen years—in environments characterized by big forces and rapid shifts that leaders could not predict or control. The research team then contrasted these “10X companies” to a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to achieve greatness in similarly extreme environments. The new findings The study results were full of provocative surprises. Such as: -The best leaders were not more risk taking, more visionary, and more creative than the comparisons; they were more disciplined, more empirical, and more paranoid. -Innovation by itself turns out not to be the trump card in a chaotic and uncertain world; more important is the ability to scale innovation, to blend creativity with discipline. -Following the belief that leading in a “fast world” always requires “fast decisions” and “fast action” is a good way to get killed. -The great companies changed less in reaction to a radically changing world than the comparison companies.

The Full Diet: A Weight-Loss Doctor's 7-Day Guide to Shedding Pounds for Good Hay House | 2012 | ISBN: 1401929060 | English | 255 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 1.25 MB + 2 MB Rarely a day goes by that the average American doesn’t think about weight. We cut calories. We cut fat. We cut carbs. We join the gym. We count our steps. We try to change our lives. Yet the weight epidemic continues to grow. So what’s wrong? In The Full Diet, weight-loss doctor Michael Snyder offers an insider’s perspective on shedding pounds, teaching you to reject the traditional diet mentality that thrives on restrictions, deprivations, and total reversals of lifestyle. Structured as a seven-day guide, Snyder shows you that losing weight isn’t nearly as complex as people make it out to be—in fact, you can learn everything you need to know in just one week. Using the science of fullness and introducing a new definition of healthy, Snyder brings us powerful weight-control tools that are rooted in our physiology and proves that the undeniable feeling of fullness is the ultimate secret in the quest for weight loss—and you can reach it without breaking the calorie bank or fighting your emotions. Insider tips, techniques, and information will help you: • Employ a variety of practical strategies to achieve sustainable weight loss no matter what kind of foods you like to eat. • End the confusion over portion control by synching visual and physiological cues of fullness. • Be full with less food but equally as satisfied (if not more so!). • Apply cheat prescriptions so you can still say yes to indulgences and temptations without feeling like a failure. • Find fulfillment in a physical activity that is inexpensive, easy, and convenient. With these new strategies and definitions, you will move from self-hatred to self-understanding, from persistent dieting to living true to yourself, and from being unhappily overweight to being a healthy individual who knows a happy weight better than a scale does.
Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep W. W. Norton & Company | 2012 | ISBN: 039308020X | English | 304 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 0.50 MB + 0.70 MB An engrossing examination of the science behind the little-known world of sleep. Like many of us, journalist David K. Randall never gave sleep much thought. That is, until he began sleepwalking. One midnight crash into a hallway wall sent him on an investigation into the strange science of sleep. In Dreamland, Randall explores the research that is investigating those dark hours that make up nearly a third of our lives. Taking readers from military battlefields to children’s bedrooms, Dreamland shows that sleep isn't as simple as it seems. Why did the results of one sleep study change the bookmakers’ odds for certain Monday Night Football games? Do women sleep differently than men? And if you happen to kill someone while you are sleepwalking, does that count as murder? This book is a tour of the often odd, sometimes disturbing, and always fascinating things that go on in the peculiar world of sleep. You’ll never look at your pillow the same way again.
