Paladins of Shannara: Allanon's Quest (Short Story) You get a little insight into what Allanon is thinking what led him to where he is and some of his worries. Even with that he still remains the mysterious enigma he's always been. This is what I like most about his character not really knowing much and imagining it instead. Another terrific story from Terry Brooks.
Partners in Crime: Two Logan and Steel Short Stories (Bad Heir Day and Stramash) These amusing short stories about Aberdeen's finest police, DI Roberta Steel and DS Logan McRae are about as far away from most US police thrillers as an iceberg from a tropical island. I read these stories as an introduction to Macbride's very successful Logan Macrae series - and I wasn't disappointed.
Power Play The plot moves along briskly with Jake Landry taking on a Travis McGee type role. He's smarter than the kingpins who look down on him, and he's dependable in a pinch. When it looks like the captors plan on leaving no witnesses behind, he secrets a steak knife in his shoe! We also get frequent looks at Landry's hard scrabble background, during which time he spent time in a juvenile offender facility. Finder keeps us wondering just exactly what he did to warrant incarceration. If you're an inveterate mystery reader as I am, you should be able to figure out who's behind the ransom attempt. The solution was sort of anti-climactic. Except for the knife in the shoe device, POWER PLAY is also unique in that the twists and turns are mostly believable, something I haven't seen in a whole lot of modern thrillers. Also, if you're a
beginning writer, you might want to check out Finder's acknowledgments. They're instructive in that they show how much research is involved in writing a book, any book.
Promise of the Wolves The story is told from the point of view of Kaala, a young member of the Swift River wolf pack who has difficulty fitting into her adoptive family. Their leader Ruuquo distrusts her because she bears a moon-like mark that brands her as potential bad luck for the pack. The wolves' lives are guided by ancient legend and a code of conduct enforced by the leaders of the valley, the Greatwolves. The foremost of these prohibits humans and wolves from associating with one another, because ironically, they are so much alike, and the last time they interacted, a war ensued between them. However, Kaala feels an inexorable pull toward the humans, especially after rescuing a human girl, TaLi, from drowning. As Kaala feels more ostracized by Ruuquo, she feels more of a need to be with and hunt with the humans, and she is guided in that direction by a spirit-wolf whom only she can see. The internal and external conflict this eventually creates is what drives the latter half of the book. And the door is left open just enough at the end to set up the sequel to this planned trilogy.
Ready, Scrap, Shoot (A Kiki Lowenstein Scrap-N-Craft Mystery) Joanna's new book did not disappoint. I couldn't wait to turn the page and find out what happens. The characters are colorful and come to life on the pages. Joanna makes it easy to become immersed in the lives of the characters and relate to what is happening in their lives. Joanna includes scrapbook tips and recipes.

Rise of Empire Readers finally learn more about the heir, we are introduced to new characters that play huge new roles (such as Modina, Amilia, Merrick and Wyatt). And older characters get to play bigger and more important storylines (especially Arista and Saulder). That said my favorite new aspect of the books is the introduction to Royce and Hadrian's pasts. Readers will get to visit the towns these two each grew up from, discover the source of Hadrian's amazing fighting skills, and even see who put Royce in prison. Each of the two characters are much more flushed out, and we really get to see what makes each of them tick. They are tested in ways we never saw in the previous two books and I have to say they will be tested further in the last installments. Of course I also loved Arista's growth and discovery. Arista goes from becoming a smart yet pampered princess to something altogether more. She becomes a real character that readers will sympathize with. Fans of the series will root for as she defies the odds and feel sorrow for as the people in her life die around her. Through Arista readers are also finally introduced to magic. As her powers grow, so does her importance in the story, and lets just say she's darn important by the end of book 4. Of course while that's all well and good, other things to keep in mind are that this book is chalk full of great action scenes, as Hadrian and Royce battle everything from mythical monsters, to religious soldiers, to goblins. All in all this book is fantastic. Sullivan has created quality characters who deepen the story, filled it with non-stop action, and thrown in a good deal of mystery and deception, to the degree that readers themselves wont know what will happen next. All in all a great book and I can't wait for the last in the series.
River of Destiny Without giving anything away, the story in itself was a good tale although somewhat predictable. I just didn't feel the ghostly, supernatural, spine tingle that I normally do when reading her books - and I missed it. There were so many characters that it took some time to reveal their true personalities and a couple of them came across as quite unbelievable to me. Daniel seemed to have a 'moral compass' transplant almost immediately which made him come across as shallow, Rosemary made me want to jump into my Kindle and slap some common sense into her and Sharon needed a book on good parenting with sick children. I loved the setting though and as usual Barbara whisked me away to be immersed in the Suffolk countryside with no effort at all. I found myself putting off daily chores to read 'just one more chapter' and thought about the book/characters while not reading which is an indication of a good writer to me.
Savage Winter Wow...that is the word I am using to describe the newest series by Rachel Van Dyken followed by I cant WAIT for more! I love it when an author draws you so into their characters that you feel what they feel (basically saying I cried). Rachel does this in a wonderful way. Now for the review...Paleo used to be a great civilization until 100 years ago a darkness fell on it destroying the seasons and most of its countries...what the darkness left behind was a kingdom divided between East and West. Kyle and Kaden live in the West which is ruled by an evil, paranoid emperor. The story begins with Kyle and Kaden running for their lives and being ripped apart from each other as Kyle watches her only love stabbed in the back. Kyle is then whisked off to the palace and we meet up with her 6 years later as the answer to a prophesy. As she meets the Prince from the East and told she is going to marry him can she overcome her past and embrace her future??? I LOVE these characters and though it is a shorter story it just makes you ready for more. I truly look forward to the Seasons of Paleo series.
Scorpion Winter The Scorpion series, already one of the best, if not the best, spy thriller series just keeps getting better and better. "Scorpion Winter" the latest outing of Kaplan's ex-CIA agent spy is brilliant. From its opening in a Siberian prison to a CIA mission in Yemen to Scorpion's attempt to stop an assassination in Ukraine, the action and suspense are nonstop. I could not put "Scorpion Winter" down. The chapters in Chernobyl are among the most eerie and chilling thriller scenes I have ever read. It's also more than a thriller, dealing with choices that every key character including Scorpion is forced to make and in the process, these choices force them to confront who they really are. And the ending is a shocker, a complete surprise yet totally logical. Awesome!
Sentinel: A Spycatcher Novel The author, Matthew Dunn was in the British Secret Intelligent Service as a field operative. So he knows the subject matter very well, and is able to write about it in such a way that is believable. I think that this really helps the storyline, but sometimes might also be a reason it trails off on too many insignificant details for an average reader to care about. Overall, I think this is a good book that is relevant today. Although the "Cold War" is over, Russia is still a very real threat to the United States, and Matthew Dunn does a very good job driving this point home through his fictional story.

In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead James Lee Burke's creation, Dave Robichea-ux, is a perfect Everyman. He struggles with demons - his own, and those of others. He is an excellently flawed man, a man of great strengths, towering weaknesses, and deep melancholy: his humanity bleeds from evgery page. In the Electric Mist With Confederate Dead gives us a better, and deeper, insight into Burke's Everyman. The story purports to be a mystery / thriller, and is designated as such by Amazon. It is, of course, much more, and much less, than that. The mystery is satisfying, of course. Mr. Burke doesn't know how to write a bad mystery. But it's a side-bar to what the book really is: a series of character studies. There's Robichea-ux, of course. The story is told in the first person, so the reader is swept into his psyche from the first page. There's Bootsie and Alafair, the people closest to Robichea-ux - and the people he often feels are the furthest from him. There's Clete Purcell, his psychotic, sweaty, shambling drunken hulk of a partner. There are the figures from his past, who return to haunt him. And there is, of course, the ghost of the Confederate General with whome Robichea-ux confers, and exposes not only himself, but the entire landscape of characters.
Heir of Novron Michael did a great job of setting up for this book with the previous ones and using what he had available in all aspects of the world. There is nothing new pulled out of thin air or make you wonder 'where did that come from', everything we need and know have been laid out for us, but now tied together to answer questions for us. Many of the smaller unknowns and lose ends are tied up here, within a captivating story in which Michael brings all the characters together and to demise, good or bad.
Hour Game I enjoyed the adventures of Michelle and Sean. This book has a few surprising twists. I will read more of their escapades.
Guardian of the Dead After a beginning that could come right out of a YA Plot Generator, the rest of the book is so unformulaic it's actually astonishing. I'm not referring to the atypical use of M'ori mythology for the fantastic elements, which is pretty sweet I think, but more to the tone of the book. This book is horror. It's YA fantasy horror, so it does it with a softened edge and a sense of purpose, but it's still got that deliciously murky and baroque sense of someone discovering how broad
and bizarre the world is, and hello, that is not all good. And our heroine has to deal with that. Being a colonizer living in a settled land: it has some consequences! Hybrid culture: it is often literally life-saving, but not unambiguously good! Keep an eye out for Iris' Crowning Moment of Awesome.
Foreign Influence: A Thriller FOREIGN INFLUENCE is a fast paced, thrill ride into the world of covert ops. Former Navy SEAL Scot Harvath is back, and in fine form. After a bus loaded with American college students is bombed in Rome, Harvath shifts into high gear. It's a horrific crime that can't go unanswered and Harvath is the man for the job. Clear across the world in Chicago, a second, less spectacular crime is committed a seemingly random hit and run. Harvath is no stranger to violent terrorism or the fanatical minds behind it, but Harvath can't know the depth of the evil in play. In a brutal pursuit that will test his knowledge of justice and mercy, Harvath must also confront his own inner demons, and they're as dangerous as the people he's pursuing. FOREIGN INFLUENCE rocks the house with Thor's best effort yet! We would expect nothing less from the New York Times #1 bestselling author of THE LAST PATRIOT.

Fighting to Survive Unlike most sequals this book ROCKS! Ms. Frater's books just keep getting better and better! She has created such a vivid world, her writing and characters literally pull you into their world and you SEE through their eyes. Very rarely have I had the pleasure of reading such a fun and interesting book. I couldn't put it down. Any lover of the Zombie Genre will love these books and they will find a permanent home upon their bookshelves!
Fated I enjoyed many of Noel's earlier novels, from her paranormal Immortals series to her contemporary standalones, because Noel clearly knows how to tell a story. Fated really only further proves that point. Due to an intriguing premise and Noel's vividly descriptive writing, I was quickly drawn into Daire's story and the unique world of Enchantment. My interest was then maintained through an exciting plot that was well balanced between the obstacles of everyday life, a very sexy romance, and more fantastical elements. Though I wasn't too enamored with the writing style at times and do wish that the romance was a little more developed and satisfying, I have to say that Noel really delivers on all other accounts in this novel, and especially in terms of an intriguing concept and truly engaging plot. Overall, I immensely enjoyed Fated and look forward to the continuation of Daire's story in further installments in the new Soul Seekers series.
Fall from Grace "Fall from Grace" is told through many flashbacks and interviews. Adam and Ben are well defined characters. Their manipulative tug-a-war over the years and the damage it ensues to everybody in their path, moves the book along to its predicable resolution. Unfortunately, the secondary characters are lackluster when they need to be gripping. Clarice, Adam's long suffering mother, his uncle Jack, and Teddy, his gay older brother have little definition and opportunity for the readers to get to know them. Carla Pacelli, his father's mistress and beneficiary has passion, and her exchanges with Adam are the strongest in the novel. The descriptions of Maratha's Vineyard are vivid and make you long for summer. At only 276 pages, this is a quick, however very predictable read.
Edenbrooke This book was so good! I enjoyed every page in one day, I just couldn't put it down. Normally not one to enjoy, or even read, regency era books I was pleasantly surprised by how I was drawn in by the first page through to the end. Great debut book and I'm looking forward to reading more from her. Read this.....and twirl if you will.

Edge of Dark Water He writes about bad people doing bad things but they are always countered with good people who grew up in the same environment but were able to rise above their upbringing. This message cannot be used often enough. We live in an era when people want to blame others for their plight but Mr. Lansdale writes of folks who work hard to do the right thing and better themselves in the process and he does it with humor, suspense, and sometimes pure horror. His characters are not perfect. Each of them has flaws but those flaws make the characters real and help us to identify with them. You care about Sue Ellen and the others on the raft. You feel their terror and their hope. You inwardly cheer when the evil folks get their due. He fills their story with more twists than the river that serves as the backdrop of the story has.
Drops of Gold I have enjoyed all of Sarah Eden's books, but this is definitely my favorite! This is a beautiful story about forgiving yourself and finding happiness even amidst trials. Sarah has a wonderful way with words and I love the dialogue between the two main characters. This is a perfect book to curl up with on a cold winter's night, but beware that once you start, you won't want to stop until you finish!
Dog and Dragon
#2 in the Dragon’s Ring high fantasy series. A wry and clever young heroine coming into her magical powers is flung into the midst of power struggles and momentous battles in a world where her coming may be the answer to a longawaited prophecy of liberation from tyrannical rulers. Lyonesse: a world formed with a magic so deep that it takes a true king to hold its parts in balance. Yet there is no king on the throne, and a dark power struggle is underway between an ancient sorceress with her shadow army of destruction and the human subjects of Lyonesse’s power-mad wizard. The only spark of hope is a prophecy that tells of a Defender who will one day come and set things to right. Young Meb, flung from her dragon-ruled homeland in another plane of existence into Lyonesse, doesn’t think she’s been called to be any kind of Defender. And she certainly isn’t happy when she’s immediately embroiled in the deadly power plots of the local royals. But Meb also happens to be an adept at the universe-folding skill of Planomancy, trained by a world-walking troubleshooter of the multiverse, the great Dragon Fionn himself –a dragon who is desperately searching for Meb, whom he’s come to love. Accompanying Fionn is Dileas, Meb’s pet and the most loyal magic sheep dog in a thousand universes. If anyone can track Meb across time and space, Dileas can. As the legions of Shadow Hall gather to bring down the leaderless kingdom, Meb must decide whether to use her ability to become the Defender everyone hopes for–if only to avoid becoming the plaything of tyrants. With the Dragon Fionn on the way, magical battle is joined, and the destiny of universes hangs upon the courage in one young woman’s heart.
Dinner, Sex and a Movie Jake is a twenty-something, bad-boy drifter with a dark past, a baby face and rock hard abs. Emma is a thirtysomething, successful trial lawyer who chews up and spits out corporate power brokers in her search for the perfect husband. They are completely incompatible, except in bed, where they find themselves frequently as a result of a “random” encounter. But Emma’s new boy-toy has a deep romantic streak that has gotten through her defenses, and what started as a fling is in danger of becoming something serious.
Deep Rough I really enjoyed the book. It normally takes me a week or two to get through a novel, but I couldn't put this one down and did it 2 evenings. Golf fan or not this book will keep you turning the pages!!! Can't wait for another one by this author.

Dead Man's List The brand new nerve-shattering thriller from the highly-acclaimed author of The Inside Ring. When Joe DeMarco is sent to investigate the death of reporter Terry Finley, it appears to be nothing more than a tragic accident. However, DeMarco's suspicions are aroused when he discovers Finley was investigating Senator Paul Morelli, considered a shoe-in for his party's presidential nomination. Morelli's luck is famous, even by a politician's standards, and whilst his past has already been thoroughly scrutinized, looks can be deceptive. DeMarco's search leads him into a world of dirty secrets, beltway politics and divided loyalties. And as two rogue agents freelancing for the CIA begin to follow him, he finds the deeper he digs, the more deadly and out of control his pursuit for justice becomes.
Cry Mercy Nick Perone restores classic automobiles. He is grateful when MSF accepts locating his niece as their first official case. Belle had been communicating on a forum board with her donor-siblings. These are other people born by the same sperm donor from a fertility clinic. Belle had been trying to learn who her biological father is, Donor 1735. Emme and Nick's search for Belle will lead them to a serial killer that may very well be as dangerous as Navarro.
Crooked Corruption, prostitution, gambling, bent coppers, crooked politicians, honest crims. It's all in a day's work.Set against the back drop of the Askin government with events revolving around notorious crime identities Dick Reilly, Lennie McPherson and Johnny Warren, CROOKED reveals the dark underbelly of Sydney during the late 1960s.Gus Finlay is a fresh-faced young detective who is transferred to the Criminal Investigation Branch after his partner has been exposed as running crooked. Sydney is a savage place. A series of violent killings escalate with a spectacular execution-style murder.
Cosmopolis The message of "Cosmopolis," about a man who has everything but wilts under his own inflated ego and goes off on a rampage, is definitely familiar. Bret Easton Ellis did something similar in "American Psycho," and he did it better. Eric Packer and Patrick Bateman are blood brothers, albeit relatives separated by about twenty years. When will these Wall Street archetypes' meltdowns have finality to them? Probably when the capitalist system finally collapses. In the meantime, we have people like Ellis and DeLillo dutifully reporting the carnage of undreamt of riches on the souls of humanity.
Circle of Shadows
Circle of Shadows travels, for the first time, outside of England and does it with authority. One of our favorite characters has committed an unthinkable murder - except that he remembers nothing about it. Set it a small German princedom a few years before the French Revolution, Crowther and Mrs. Westerman are once again on the trail of probably the most bizarre murderer yet, although I didn't guess it until the very end. Lovely writing, fun plots, spies, alchemists, good development, and an exotic flourish. Well done! I already wish I knew what adventures lie ahead with the next adventure.

Chocolate Wishes It seems as though everywhere she turns Chloe is stuck hearing his music (bringing back memories she would prefer to forget) but now, she also has to see him on a regular basis as he is the new Vicar. What a mess and no amount of chocolate seems to be able to fix this - especially since she is fighting very hard not to fall back in love.
Carpathia This is a vampire story. Set on the titanic and the ship that rescued some of the survivors. Like that great book by Kim Newman this story takes the Bram Stoker story and says `What if?' The Dracula links are slowly fed through until you can't ignore them, but most readers will get them pretty early on. This is quite rewarding and I felt I'd stumbled on to a secret. A lot of people die in this story, not nearly as many by drowning as I'd imagined when I started the book. In fact, as I'd not read the sleeve notes before starting the book I wasn't even aware it was a vampire book. I just thought it was an alternate history Titanic story. I was pleasantly surprised.
Calamity Jayne Goes to College The mystery kept me guessing "whodunit." And, as usual, Calamity Jayne's antics kept me laughing. The author also keeps you interested in Calamity Jayne's personal growth and wondering what she will be up to next.
Build a Man I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I loved being part of Serenity's journey as she tried to reconcile the life she thought she always wanted with her conscience, her own sense of right and wrong and her heart. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Serenity was a great character and from the beginning to the end, there was strong character development as she stopped wanting what was good on paper in favor of what made her truly happy.
Broken Angels Another difference that I wasn't so thrilled about is that while Kovacs was cast as a beat-down mercenary and halfhearted criminal just trying to "get to the next screen" in the first book, here he ultimately finds himself in the middle of one of the most important events in human history. I was expecting more of the anonymous and reluctant protagonist, so I guess I was a little thrown off.
Nevertheless, this is a fantastic book, and Richard K. Morgan is a great writer who I'm sure I'll pick up again. If you like Altered Carbon, you should definitely give this a shot. And is you haven't read Altered Carbon, what are you waiting for?

Battlefield 3: The Russian I must say that this book was very entertaining, may even be better than the game itself. The juicy details and in-depth description of what these soldiers really do everyday had me thrown. Andy McNab is definitely one of my favourite authors as of now.
Bound I love Urban Fantasy books and I couldn't put Bound down! From the very beginning Lee pulls you right into the story and makes you keep turning those pages to see what happens next! Ursine as a character is fantastic, you feel his emotions with him and his personality really shines through which left me laughing out loud many times! I can see this being one very addictive series! I'm hooked and I can't wait for the next book! I'll be recommending this book to all my friends. What made this book really interesting to me was that it was told from a male point of view, and I have to say I loved it. It was a very refreshing change!
Battle Dress The setting of Battle Dress is West Point Military Academy, but the message I received from this first book written by Amy Efaw is: No matter what your life has been, it's up to you and your attitudes whether you make it or not. Never give up! I found Battle Dress to be both motivating and good recreational reading, although I had to put the book down after the first two chapters because I was exhausted.
Avalanche Pass One of the very first things I noticed about this book is that the author was from Australia which accounts for some of the terminology or wording to be a little unusual for a story that takes place in the United States. After I accepted that fact I was able to look beyond that flaw and enjoy the story. It is a really good suspenseful story. It has a hostages playing a part in their rescue, kind of a Flight 93 on 9/11 element that was quite gripping.
Altered Carbon It's an extremely convoluted tale, with lots of double-crossing, plot twists, hidden agendas, sexual tension (and outright graphic sex), dry tough guy humor, and excellent action sequences. It's so jam-packed it almost gets
overwhelming at times, and one wishes Morgan had been able to trim just a little bit here and there. However, he's built a very intriguing and nasty future earth, where-as one might well imagine-a lot of the technology gets channeled into the sex trade. This is great pulp fiction, with great characters, including my favorite: the AI Hendrix Hotel. It's a hotel that runs itself using artificial intelligence, making for a hilarious, yet plausible, character.

A Lady Never Lies The 3 women have traveled to Italy, Lady Morley to avoid creditors and Lady Somerton to avoid an abusive husband. The 3 men are also in Italy, mainly because Burke wants an isolated place to perfect the design of his electric motorcar but also for the 2 noble brothers to take a break from their rather rakish, dissolute ways.
A Gentleman Never Tells Juliana Gray has happily proven that lightning can strike twice. I enjoyed this book as much if not more than the first book in her trilogy. The relationship/romance between Roland and Lilibet was a sweet one. (Never fear, for those that want it, there was a good dose of sensuality as well) Their love for each other was never something that was in doubt, but how they get to a HEA is a good little journey to take. Roland may just be one of my favorite heroes in recent history.
18 Things Then Conner is killed in a freak boating accident and Olga feels responsible. When she downs an entire bottle of pills to deal with the emotional pain, her parents force her into counseling. There, her therapist writes a prescription in the form of a life list titled 18 Things. Eighteen quests to complete the year of her eighteenth birthday.

Galileo and 400 Years of Telescopic Astronomy Published: 2010-09-13 | ISBN: 1441955704 | PDF | 310 pages | 15 MB Imagine yourself living 400 years ago, right before the telescope was first used by Galileo to look up into the skies and find unforeseen wonders. You probably believed, with most of the known world, that Earth was at the center of the magnificent parade of planets and stars above you, and the Sun’s purpose in journeying across the sky was to give Earth daylight and warmth. Suddenly, though, your world is turned upside down. The Church, all powerful in its doctrines and teachings of the times, continues to support theories that don’t fit the facts presented by scientists. Scientists in their quest for truth must hide their findings or risk the harsh penalties imposed by the Church. We have gone from a comforting Earth-centered universe to a tiny floating spec in a gigantic cosmos, barely a comma in a lengthy treatise. And we have gone there in a blink of an eye. We may have lost our central position in the universe, but Grego and Mannion show us how much we have gained in understanding the universe around us. And we are only at the beginning of our journey. Their words help us to discover our place again and how we got there and what we might expect to learn in the centuries to come.

There is also plenty of background material provided to make the book accessible to non-astronomers, as a humorous and informative work about (mostly amateur) astronomy.

Being Kendra: Cribs, Cocktails, and Getting My Sexy Back 2011 | ISBN: 0062091182 | 240 pages | EPUB | 10 MB Kendra Wilkinson has revealed herself before—in the pages of Playboy and on her reality show, Kendra. Now she reveals her private side, sharing the ups and downs, the joys and challenges of motherhood, marriage, and life in the spotlight. In this intimate follow-up to her New York Times bestseller, Sliding into Home, Kendra confides her most candid thoughts and feelings on her experiences as a new mom, and she divulges her secrets on how to do it all and make it look easy, sexy, and fun—even when it’s not. Now with a husband and baby in her life, a booming brand to manage, and her own needs to think about too, Kendra is learning the art of balance, sometimes the hard way. Not wanting to pawn her child off to nannies like so many other stars, Kendra relishes the role of supermom—kissing boo-boos, making lunches, scheduling playdates—all while juggling appearances, workout videos, and even training for the ultra-competitive hit show Dancing with the Stars. While Being Kendra is full of humor and true stories that women can relate to, it’s also a heartrending look at Kendra’s very personal journey through some dark places, including a private struggle with postpartum depression and a very public tussle with post-baby weight loss. Kendra, who has always been known for her athletic (and enhanced) figure, opens up about her efforts to get her bikini body back and the difficulty of not looking sexy, which she believed was her most valuable quality. Her fight to lose weight at any cost, chronicled on the covers of countless magazines, has become yet another triumph for Kendra as she continues to succeed in the face of adversity. From dental assistant, to Playboy girlfriend and face of a franchise, to wife and new mother, Kendra has embraced what life has thrown at her with determination, fortitude, and a ready laugh. This daring and honest memoir captures Kendra and her family in their best and worst moments as she lives, loves, rebounds, and, ultimately, finds her place in her new world.

Bob Dylan In America 2011 | ISBN-10: 0385529880, 0767931793 | 400 pages | EPUB | 3,4 MB One of America’s finest historians shows us how Bob Dylan, one of the country’s greatest and most enduring artists, still surprises and moves us after all these years. Growing up in Greenwich Village, Sean Wilentz discovered the music of Bob Dylan as a young teenager; almost half a century later, he revisits Dylan’s work with the skills of an eminent American historian as well as the passion of a fan. Drawn in part from Wilentz’s essays as “historian in residence” of Dylan’s official website, Bob Dylan in America is a unique blend of fact, interpretation, and affinity—a book that, much like its subject, shifts gears and changes shape as the occasion warrants. Beginning with his explosion onto the scene in 1961, this book follows Dylan as he continues to develop a body of musical and literary work unique in our cultural history. Wilentz’s approach places Dylan’s music in the context of its time, including the early influences of Popular Front ideology and Beat aesthetics, and offers a larger critical appreciation of Dylan as both a songwriter and performer down to the present. Wilentz has had unprecedented access to studio tapes, recording notes, rare photographs, and other materials, all of which allow him to tell Dylan’s story and that of such masterpieces as Blonde on Blonde with an unprecedented authenticity and richness. Bob Dylan in America—groundbreaking, comprehensive, totally absorbing—is the result of an author and a subject brilliantly met.

Of Thee I Zing: America's Cultural Decline from Muffin Tops to Body Shots 2012 | ISBN-10: 1451642040, 1451642059 | 320 pages | EPUB | 1 MB My culture is depraved, Not sure it can be saved . . . Of Thee I Zing. Land filled with STDs, Pants way down to the knees, Nary a “thanks” or “please” This is going to sting. . . . While Laura Ingraham was walking through a Northern Virginia shopping mall one Saturday afternoon, it all became clear to her: Our country is in grave peril. Our culture of ignorance, arrogance, and gluttony undermines our present and endangers our future. Everywhere she turned, she saw signs of the impending disaster: zombie teens texting each other across a café table; a man having his eyebrows threaded at a kiosk; a fiftyish woman shoehorned into a tube top and skinny jeans; and a storefront ad featuring a Victoria’s Secret model spilling out of her push-up bra and into the faces of young passersby. Ingraham wondered, “Is this it? Is this what our forefathers fought for? What my parents struggled for? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is still having that two-for-one sale?” In an act of patriotic intervention, the most-listened-to woman in talk radio casts her satirical eye upon all that ails American society. In this sharp-witted comic romp, Laura Ingraham takes you on a guided tour through ten levels of our cultural hell. You know we’re in trouble when . . . Airplane seats shrink—just as the passengers expand. Celebrity baby names go from the peculiar (Apple, Stetson, and Daisy Boo) to the pathetic (Bamboo, Blanket, and Bronx). People meticulously tend their virtual crops on Farmville, while their children eat takeout. “Breaking News” usually means it happened yesterday.
The weddings last longer than the marriages. Facebook has become a verb and reading has become an ancient art form. Of Thee I Zing is cultural commentary too funny to ignore, igniting a national conversation long past due. America, your cultural recovery begins here.

The End: The Defiance and Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1944-1945 English | 2011-09-08 | ISBN: 1594203148 | 592 pages | EPUB | 5.55 mb From the preeminent Hitler biographer, a fascinating and original exploration of how the Third Reich was willing and able to fight to the bitter end of World War II. Countless books have been written about why Nazi Germany lost World War II, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the equally vital question of how and why it was able to hold out as long as it did. The Third Reich did not surrender until Germany had been left in ruins and almost completely occupied. Even in the near-apocalyptic final months, when the war was plainly lost, the Nazis refused to sue for peace. Historically, this is extremely rare. Drawing on original testimony from ordinary Germans and arch-Nazis alike, award-winning historian Ian Kershaw explores this fascinating question in a gripping and focused narrative that begins with the failed bomb plot in July 1944 and ends with the German capitulation in May 1945. Hitler, desperate to avoid a repeat of the "disgraceful" German surrender in 1918, was of course critical to the Third Reich's fanatical determination, but his power was sustained only because those below him were unable, or unwilling, to challenge it. Even as the military situation grew increasingly hopeless, Wehrmacht generals fought on, their orders largely obeyed, and the regime continued its ruthless persecution of Jews, prisoners, and foreign workers. Beneath the hail of allied bombing, German society maintained some semblance of normalcy in the very last months of the war. The Berlin Philharmonic even performed on April 12, 1945, less than three weeks before Hitler's suicide. As Kershaw shows, the structure of Hitler's "charismatic rule" created a powerful negative bond between him and the Nazi leadership- they had no future without him, and so their fates were inextricably tied. Terror also helped the Third Reich maintain its grip on power as the regime began to wage war not only on its ideologically defined enemies but also on the German people themselves. Yet even as each month brought fresh horrors for civilians, popular support for the regime remained linked to a patriotic support of Germany and a terrible fear of the enemy closing in. Based on prodigious new research, Kershaw's The End is a harrowing yet enthralling portrait of the Third Reich in its last desperate gasps.
The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey English | 2006-10-10 | ISBN: 0767913736 | 432 pages | EPUB | 1.62 mb At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, The River of Doubt is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. The River of Doubt—it is a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indians armed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide through its waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron. After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever. Along the way, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series of hardships, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and enduring starvation, Indian attack, disease, drowning, and a murder within their own ranks. Three men died, and Roosevelt was brought to the brink of suicide. The River of Doubt brings alive these extraordinary events in a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of the most famous Americans who ever lived. From the soaring beauty of the Amazon rain forest to the darkest night of Theodore Roosevelt’s life, here is Candice Millard’s dazzling debut.

The Art of Nonfiction Movie Making 2012 | 239 Pages | ISBN: 027599225X | PDF | 3 MB The past few years have featured such blockbusters as Super-Size Me, Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko, March of the PenguinS≪/i>, and An Inconvenient Truth. Where does the idea come from? How do you raise the money? How much money do you need? What visual style is best suited to the story? What are the legal issues involved? And how can a film reach that all-important milestone and find a willing distributor? Epstein, Friedman, and Wood tackle all of these important questions with examples and anecdotes from their own careers. The result is an informative and entertaining guide for those just starting out, and an enlightening read for anyone interested in a behind-the-scenes look at this newly reinvigorated field of film.

Despite the richness of her life story, there has never been a full-length biography of the ambitious, star-struck Ohio girl who evolved into a reviled disseminator of Nazi propaganda. At the outbreak of war in September 1939, Mildred had been living in Germany for five years. Hoping to marry, she chose to remain in the Nazi-run state even as the last Americans departed for home. In 1940, she was hired by the German overseas radio, where she evolved from a simple disc jockey and announcer to a master propagandist. Under the tutelage of her married lover, Max Otto Koischwicz, Gillars became the personification of Nazi propaganda to the American GI. Spicing her broadcasts with music, Mildred used her soothing voice to taunt Allied troops about the supposed infidelities of their wives and girlfriends back home, as well as the horrible deaths they were likely to meet on the battlefield. Supported by German military intelligence, she was able to convey personal greetings to individual US units, creating an eerie foreboding among troops who realized the Germans knew who and where they were. After broadcasting for Berlin up to the very end of the war, Gillars tried but failed to pose as a refugee, but was captured by US authorities. Her 1949 trial for treason captured the attention and raw emotion of a nation fresh from the horrors of the Second World War. Gillars's twelve-year imprisonment and life on parole, including a stay in a convent, is a remarkable story of a woman who attempts to rebuild her life in the country she betrayed. Written by Richard Lucas, a freelance writer and lifelong shortwave radio enthusiast, Axis Sally: The American Voice of Nazi Germany is the first thoroughly documented look at this mythologized figure of World War II.
The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden ISBN: 0802120342 | 2012 | EPUB | 266 pages | 299 KB From Mark Bowden, the preeminent chronicler of our military and special forces, comes The Finish, a gripping account of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. With access to key sources, Bowden takes us inside the rooms where decisions were made and on the ground where the action unfolded. After masterminding the attacks of September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden managed to vanish. Over the next ten years, as Bowden shows, America found that its war with al Qaeda—a scattered group of individuals who were almost impossible to track—demanded an innovative approach. Step by step, Bowden describes the development of a new tactical strategy to fight this war—the fusion of intel from various agencies and on-the-ground special ops. After thousands of special forces missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, the right weapon to go after bin Laden had finally evolved. By Spring 2011, intelligence pointed to a compound in Abbottabad; it was estimated that there was a 50/50 chance that Osama was there. Bowden shows how three strategies were mooted: a drone strike, a precision bombing, or an assault by Navy SEALs. In the end, the President had to make the final decision. It was time for the finish.

The Pope and the Heretic: The True Story of Giordano Bruno, the Man Who Dared to Defy the Roman Inquisition ISBN: 0060933887 | 2003 | EPUB | 256 pages | 273 KB Giordano Bruno challenged everything in his pursuit of an all-embracing system of thought. This not only brought him patronage from powerful figures of the day but also put him in direct conflict with the Catholic Church. Arrested by the Inquisition and tried as a heretic, Bruno was imprisoned, tortured, and, after eight years, burned at the stake in 1600. The Vatican "regrets" the burning yet refuses to clear him of heresy. But Bruno's philosophy spread: Galileo, Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, and Gottfried Leibniz all built upon his ideas; his thought experiments predate the work of such twentieth-century luminaries as Karl Popper; his religious thinking inspired such radicals as Baruch Spinoza; and his work on the art of memory had a profound effect on William Shakespeare. Chronicling a genius whose musings helped bring about the modern world, Michael White pieces together the final years -- the capture, trial, and the threat the Catholic Church felt -- that made Bruno a martyr of free thought.
Bunch of Amateurs: A Search for the American Character ISBN: 0307393755 | 2012 | EPUB | 288 pages | 2 MB WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES THE SUCCESS OF AMERICA AND THE IDENTITY OF ITS PEOPLE? ACCLAIMED WRITER AND CONTRIBUTING EDITOR TO THIS AMERICAN LIFE JACK HITT THINKS IT’S BECAUSE WE’RE ALL A BUNCH OF AMATEURS.
America’s self-invented tinkerers are back at it in their metaphorical garages—fiddling with everything from solarpowered cars to space elevators. In Bunch of Amateurs, Jack Hitt visits a number of different garages and has written a fascinating book that looks at America’s current batch of amateurs and their pursuits. From a tattooed young woman in the Bay Area trying to splice a fish’s glow-in-the-dark gene into common yogurt (all done in her kitchen using salad spinners) to a space fanatic on the brink of developing the next generation of telescopes from his mobile home, Hitt not only tells the stories of people in the grip of a passion but argues that America’s history is bound up in a cycle of amateur surges. Beginning with Ben Franklin’s kite and leading all the way to the current TV hit American Idol, Hitt argues that the nation’s love of self-invented obsessives has always driven the country to rediscover the true heart of the American dream. Amateur pursuits are typically lamented as a world that just passed until a Sergey Brin or Mark Zuckerberg steps out of his garage (or dorm room) with the rare but crucial success story. In Bunch of Amateurs, Hitt argues that America is now poised to pioneer at another frontier that will lead, one more time, to the newest version of the American dream.

River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones that Didn't Get Away English | ISBN: 0306819546 | edition 2011 | EPUB | 304 pages | 2 MB I’m Jeremy Wade, biologist and fishing detective. For twenty-five years, I’ve explored our planet’s remotest rivers and lakes, hunting for monster-sized fish. It’s become something of an obsession for me. . . . Called “the greatest angling explorer of his generation” (Independent on Sunday), Jeremy Wade, host of Animal Planet’s wildly popular TV series River Monsters, takes viewers where no wildlife program has gone before, revealing the creatures that lurk in the murky depths of our planet’s inland waterways. Now, Wade goes truly beneath the surface, disclosing full details of how he tracks down and catches each species while also recounting the off-camera highlights of his extraordinary life. From his arrest as a suspected spy in Southeast Asia to a plane crash in the Amazon, every page of River Monsters is packed with adventure. Each chapter unfolds an enthralling detective story, where fishermen’s tales of underwater man-eaters and aquatic killers are subjected to scientific scrutiny. Follow Wade step-by-step as, armed with just a fishing line, he closes in on his prey and separates fact from fiction. From the heart of the Congo, where he wrestles with supernatural goliath tigerfish, to the depths of the Amazon, where the most feared creature is one that could fit in your palm, the results are fish of staggering proportions and terrifying demeanor. Wade also reveals monsters from upcoming episodes, including deadly electric eels, a giant described as a cross between a shark and a chainsaw, and a snake-like beast that truly is the stuff of legend. In the tradition of the most gripping adventure writing, River Monsters shows that there’s more to this world than what’s visible on the surface. As Wade says, with a fishing line anything is possible—sometimes it can even reveal the future, or at least one possible version of it. In similar fashion, Wade’s writings are much more than exhilarating stories: they reveal a vision of the world more awe-inspiring than any individual myth made flesh. Ultimately, River Monsters explores the real mysteries that still exist, capturing the story of one man’s obsession—and his relentless pursuit of the truth.

Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal English | ISBN: 0609807323 | edition 2002 | EPUB | 480 pages | 3.79 MB “Bang your head! Metal Health’ll drive you mad!” — Quiet Riot Like an episode of VH1’s Behind the Music on steroids, Bang Your Head is an epic history of every band and every performer that has proudly worn the Heavy Metal badge. Whether headbanging is your guilty pleasure or you firmly believe that this much-maligned genre has never received the respect it deserves, Bang Your Head is a must-read that pays homage to a music that’s impossible to ignore, especially when being blasted through a sixteen-inch woofer. Charting the genesis of early metal with bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden; the rise of metal to the top of the Billboard charts and heavy MTV rotation featuring the likes of Def Leppard and Metallica; hitting its critical peak with bands like Guns N’ Roses; disgrace during the “hair metal” ’80s; and a demise fueled by the explosion of the Seattle grunge scene and the “alternative” revolution, Bang Your Head is as funny as it is informative and proves once and for all that there is more to metal than sin, sex, and spandex. To write this exhaustive history, David Konow spent three years interviewing the bands, wives, girlfriends, ex-wives, groupies, managers, record company execs, and anyone who was or is a part of the metal scene, including many of the band guys often better known for their escapades and bad behavior than for their musicianship. Nothing is left unsaid in this jaw-dropping, funny, and entertaining chronicle of power ballads, outrageous outfits, big hair, bigger egos, and testosterone-drenched debauchery.

The Constant Choice: An Everyday Journey From Evil Toward Good 2013 | ISBN: 1608324079 | English | 304 Pages | PDF | 3.05 MB We need more goodness now. We live in a most challenging time. Many of us struggle, emotionally, ethically, and spiritually. We seem headed toward less compassion and consideration, failing to overcome that basic instinct that often leads to evil in human behavior--self-preservation at all costs. Yet within each of us a new future is stirring. We can become better people and build a better world by opting for good over evil--one choice at a time. In The Constant Choice, Peter Georgescu offers a gripping narrative of his journey from childhood captivity in a Romanian labor camp to his role as CEO of the world-renowned advertising agency Young & Rubicam. His traumatic youth--his parents' exile from their homeland, his grandfather's murder in prison, his neighbors' betrayal of one another--led to a lifelong struggle to grasp humanity's moral nature. Despite his conviction when he arrived on American soil that he had reached the land of the good, he discovered a more subtle evil at work all around him. Yet he also thrived through the generosity of one benefactor after another. Goodness, he found, isn't inherent; it evolves from daily choice. Through decades of reflection on human behavior, as well as philosophical and spiritual exploration, Peter arrived at a new perspective on the significance of our habitual choices. Every decision we make alters our biological nature, for better or worse--a model that has been confirmed by recent science. The Constant Choice reveals a path for changing who we are and the future of humanity. It's up to each of us to become activists for good.
Smuggler Nation: How Illicit Trade Made America 2013 | ISBN: 0199746885 | English | 472 Pages | PDF | 3.75 MB America is a smuggler nation. Our long history of illicit imports has ranged from West Indies molasses and Dutch gunpowder in the 18th century, to British industrial technologies and African slaves in the 19th century, to French condoms and Canadian booze in the early 20th century, to Mexican workers and Colombian cocaine in the modern era. Contraband capitalism, it turns out, has been an integral part of American capitalism. Providing a sweeping narrative history from colonial times to the present, Smuggler Nation is the first book to retell the story of America--and of its engagement with its neighbors and the rest of the world--as a series of highly contentious battles over clandestine commerce. As Peter Andreas demonstrates in this provocative and fascinating account, smuggling has played a pivotal and too often overlooked role in America's birth, westward expansion, and economic development, while anti-smuggling campaigns have dramatically enhanced the federal government's policing powers. The great irony, Andreas tells us, is that a country that was born and grew up through smuggling is today the world's leading anti-smuggling crusader. In tracing America's long and often tortuous relationship with the murky underworld of smuggling, Andreas provides a much-needed antidote to today's hyperbolic depictions of out-of-control borders and growing global crime threats. Urgent calls by politicians and pundits to regain control of the nation's borders suffer from a severe case of historical amnesia, nostalgically implying that they were ever actually under control. This is pure mythology, says Andreas. For better and for worse, America's borders have always been highly porous. Far from being a new and unprecedented danger to America, the illicit underside of globalization is actually an old American tradition. As Andreas shows, it goes back not just decades but centuries. And its impact has been decidedly double-edged, not only subverting U.S. laws but also helping to fuel America's evolution from a remote British colony to the world's pre-eminent superpower.

One Nation Under Stress: The Trouble with Stress as an Idea 2013 | ISBN: 019974291X | English | 256 Pages | PDF | 3.05 MB Stress. Everyone is talking about it, suffering from it, trying desperately to manage it-now more than ever. From 1970 to 1980, 2,326 academic articles appeared with the word "stress" in the title. In the decade between 2000 and 2010 that number jumped to 21,750. Has life become ten times more stressful, or is it the stress concept itself that has grown exponentially over the past 40 years? In One Nation Under Stress, Dana Becker argues that our national infatuation with the therapeutic culture has created a middle-class moral imperative to manage the tensions of daily life by turning inward, ignoring the social and political realities that underlie those tensions. Becker shows that although stress is often associated with conditions over which people have little control-workplace policies unfavorable to family life, increasing economic inequality, war in the age of terrorism-the stress concept focuses most of our attention on how individuals react to stress. A proliferation of selfhelp books and dire medical warnings about the negative effects of stress on our physical and emotional health all place the responsibility for alleviating stress-though yoga, deep breathing, better diet, etc.-squarely on the individual. The stress concept has come of age in a period of tectonic social and political shifts. Nevertheless, we persist in the all-American belief that we can meet these changes by re-engineering ourselves rather than tackling the root causes of stress. Examining both research and popular representations of stress in cultural terms, Becker traces the evolution of the social uses of the stress concept as it has been transformed into an all-purpose vehicle for defining, expressing, and containing middle-class anxieties about upheavals in American society.
A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II
2013 | ISBN: 0425252868 | English | 400 Pages | PDF | 21 MB Four days before Christmas 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly, a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail—a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber in the squeeze of a trigger. What happened next would defy imagination and later be called the most incredible encounter between enemies in World War II. This is the true story of the two pilots whose lives collided in the skies that day—the American—2nd Lieutenant Charlie Brown, a former farm boy from West Virginia who came to captain a B-17—and the German—2nd Lieutenant Franz Stigler, a former airline pilot from Bavaria who sought to avoid fighting in World War II. A Higher Call follows both Charlie and Franz’s harrowing missions. Charlie would face takeoffs in English fog over the flaming wreckage of his buddies’ planes, flak bursts so close they would light his cockpit, and packs of enemy fighters that would circle his plane like sharks. Franz would face sandstorms in the desert, a crash alone at sea, and the spectacle of 1,000 bombers each with eleven guns, waiting for his attack. Ultimately, Charlie and Franz would stare across the frozen skies at one another. What happened between them, the American 8th Air Force would later classify as “top secret.” It was an act that Franz could never mention or else face a firing squad. It was the encounter that would haunt both Charlie and Franz for forty years until, as old men, they would search for one another, a last mission that could change their lives forever.

The Hermit in the Garden: From Imperial Rome to Ornamental Gnome 2013 | ISBN: 0199696993 | English | 258 Pages | PDF | 3.15 MB Lavishly illustrated with numerous black-and-white and color images, The Hermit in the Garden tells the engagingly eccentric tale of the eighteenth-century craze for ornamental hermits-the must-have accessory for the grand gardens of Georgian England and beyond. Eminent historian Gordon Campbell-an authority on the Renaissance and on the decorative arts-takes the reader on a journey that is at once illuminating and whimsical, shedding light on the history of the ornamental hermit and visiting the sites of many of the surviving hermitages themselves, which remain scattered throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland. Tracing its distant origins to the villa of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the second century AD, Campbell focuses on the heyday of the ornamental hermit in England, when it became highly fashionable for owners of country estates to commission architectural follies for their landscape gardens, follies which often included hermitages, many of which still survive. Perhaps most curious, Campbell relates how landowners peopled their hermitages either with imaginary hermits or with real hermits, and in some cases the landowner became his own hermit. Those who took employment as garden hermits were typically required to refrain from cutting their hair or washing, and some were dressed as druids. These were wholly secular hermits, products of the fashion for "pleasing melancholy." And though the fashion for hermits fizzled out by the end of the eighteenth century, the craze left their indelible mark on both the literature as well as the gardens of the period. And, as Gordon Campbell shows, they live on in the art, literature, and drama of our own day-most notably, in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia-as well as in the figure of the modern-day garden gnome.
The Speedy Vegetable Garden 2013 | ISBN: 1604693266 | English | 208 Pages | PDF | 4.95 MB
Typically, vegetable gardening is about the long view: peas sown in spring aren't harvested until summer, and tomatoes started indoors in February can't be eaten until July. But it's not true for all plants. Some things can be planted and eaten in weeks, days, even hours. The Speedy Vegetable Garden highlights more than 50 quick crops, with complete information on how to sow, grow, and harvest each plant, and sumptuous photography that provides inspiration and a visual guide for when to harvest. In addition to instructions for growing, it also provides recipes that highlight each crop’s unique flavor, like Chickpea sprout hummus, stuffed tempura zucchini flowers, and a paella featuring calendula. Sprouted seeds are the fastest. Microgreens can be harvested in weeks: cilantro, 14 days after planting; arugula and fennel in 10 days. And a handful of vegetable varieties grow more quickly than their slower relatives, like dwarf French beans (60 days), cherry tomatoes (65 days), and early potatoes (75 days). The Speedy Vegetable Garden puts fresh, seed-to-table food at your fingertips, fast!

Fifty Common Birds of the Upper Midwest 2006 | 126 Pages | ISBN: 0877459835 | PDF | 4 MB No bird is common, if we use “common to mean ordinary. But birds that are seen more commonly than others can seem less noteworthy than species that are rarely glimpsed. In this gathering of essays and illustrations celebrating fifty of the most common birds of the Upper Midwest, illustrator Dana Gardner and writer Nancy Overcott encourage us to take a closer look at these familiar birds with renewed appreciation for their not-so-ordinary beauty and lifeways. Beginning with the garishly colored male and the more gently colored female wood duck, whose tree cavity nest serves as a launching pad for ducklings in the summer months, and ending on a bright yellow note with the American goldfinch, whose cheerful presence enlivens the midwestern landscape all year long, Overcott combines field observations drawn from her twenty-plus years of living and birding in Minnesota's Big Woods with anecdotes and data from other ornithologists to portray each species' life cycle, its vocalizations and appearance, and its habitat, food, and foraging methods as well as migration patterns and distribution. Infused with a dedication to conserving natural resources, her succinct yet personable prose forms an ideal complement to Gardner's watercolors as this renowned illustrator of avian life worldwide revisits the birds of his childhood. Together art and text ensure that the wild turkey, great blue heron, sharp-shinned hawk, barred owl, pileated woodpecker, house wren, ovenbird, field sparrow, rose-breasted grosbeak, red-winged blackbird, and forty other species of the Upper Midwest are never seen as common again.

Busting Vegas: The MIT Whiz Kid Who Brought the Casinos to Their Knees 2005 | ISBN: 0060575115 | 304 pages | PDF | 14,5 MB He played in casinos around the world with a plan to make himself richer than anyone could possibly imagine -- but it would nearly cost him his life. Semyon Dukach was known as the Darling of Las Vegas. A legend at age twenty-one, this cocky hotshot was the biggest high roller to appear in Sin City in decades, a mathematical genius with a system the casinos had never seen
before and couldn't stop -- a system that has never been revealed until now; that has nothing to do with card counting, wasn't illegal, and was more powerful than anything that had been tried before. Las Vegas. Atlantic City. Aruba. Barcelona. London. And the jewel of the gambling crown -- Monte Carlo. Dukach and his fellow MIT students hit them all and made millions. They came in hard, with stacks of cash; big, seemingly insane bets; women hanging on their arms; and fake identities. Although they were taking classes and studying for exams during the week, over the weekends they stormed the blackjack tables only to be harassed, banned from casinos, threatened at gunpoint, and beaten in Vegas's notorious back rooms. The stakes were high, the dangers very real, but the players were up to the challenges, consequences be damned. There was Semyon Dukach himself, bored with school and broke; Victor Cassius, the slick, brilliant MIT grad student who galvanized the team; Owen Keller, with stunning ability but a dark past that would catch up to him; and Allie Simpson, bright, clever, and a feast for the eyes. In the classroom, they were geeks. On the casino floor, they were unstoppable. Busting Vega$ is Dukach's unbelievably true story; a riveting account of monumental greed, excess, hubris, sex, love, violence, fear, and statistics that is high-stakes entertainment at its best.

The Mind's Eye: An Inspector Van Veeteren Mystery (Audiobook) 2011 | 6 hours and 38 mins | ISBN: 1611742757 | MP3 64 kbps | 192 MB When foreign crime novelists break through in the U.S., it’s often not with the first book in a series; then, riding on success, the earlier volumes are issued. So it was with Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander series, and so it is now with Wallander’s fellow Swede Hakan Nesser. This third Inspector Van Veeteren novel to appear here is actually the first in the series. The similarities, apparent in Nesser’s Borkmann’s Point (2006), between Van Veeteren’s intuitive sleuthing style and that of Commissaire Adamsberg in Fred Vargas’ series, are even more evident here, as the inspector attempts to rely on his ability to sense guilt and innocence in a suspect. This time, though, Van Veeteren’s sense that Janek Mitter didn’t kill his wife doesn’t keep the man out of prison; the inspector only knows he was right when Mitter is murdered on the day he is released. Effectively combining police procedural and psychological thriller, Nesser lets us into the heads of both his hero and the people he investigates. Backtracking in a series is sometimes disconcerting, as it can be here, but it’s easy to see how this book launched Nesser’s career.
Sex Changes: A Memoir of Marriage, Gender, and Moving On (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2012 | 9 hours and 46 mins | ISBN: 1470832968 | MP3 96 kbps | 422 MB What do you do when the other woman is your husband? A wife's memoir of her husband's sex change Christine Benvenuto had been married for more than twenty years -- with three young children -- when her husband turned to her one night in bed and said ''I'm thinking constantly about my gender.'' He was unhappy in his body and wanted to become a woman.
Part memoir, part voyeur's look into a marriage, Sex Changes is a journey through the end of a marriage and out the other side. We see a woman, desperate to save her family and shelter her children, discover a well of strength and resilience she never knew she had. We learn what to tell the neighbors when your husband starts wearing heels with his shirts and ties. We see a woman open herself to a group of friends who travel with her through her darkest times, provide light and levity throughout -- and who offer the opportunity to learn how to give as well as receive the love and support of true friendship. When she lost her husband to skirts and hormones, life made Chris a better woman. Sex Changes is the story of what one woman discovered about herself in the midst of the conflagration of her family. Fiercely funny, self-lacerating, and not entirely politically correct, Sex Changes is a journey of love and anguish told with hilarity, heartbreak and a lot of soul searching. It is about the mysteries in every marriage, the secrets we chose to keep, and the freedom that the truth can bring.
Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator (Audiobook) 2012 | 6 hours and 23 mins | ISBN: n/a , ASIN: B008MT9ZQ6 | MP3 96 kbps | 277 MB You’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me. I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs—as much as any one person can. In today’s culture… 1) Blogs like Gawker, Buzzfeed and the Huffington Post drive the media agenda. 2) Bloggers are slaves to money, technology, and deadlines. 3) Manipulators wield these levers to shape everything you read, see and watch—online and off. Why am I giving away these secrets? Because I'm tired of a world where blogs take indirect bribes, marketers help write the news, reckless journalists spread lies, and no one is accountable for any of it. I'm pulling back the curtain because I don't want anyone else to get blindsided. I’m going to explain exactly how the media really works. What you choose to do with this information is up to you.

The Year 1000 (Audiobook) Abridged edition 2000 | 3 hours and 17 mins | ISBN: 000105628X | MP3 64 kbps | 95 MB What life was like at the turn of The First Millennium The Year 1000 is a vivid and surprising portrait of life in England a thousand years ago – no spinach, no sugar, but a world which already knew brain surgeons and property developers, and yes, even the occasional gossip columnist. Uncovering such wonderfully unexpected details, authors Robert Lacey and Danny Danziger bring this distant world closer than it has ever been before. How did monks communicate if they were not allowed to speak? What punishments could the law impose without stone and iron prisons in which to lock up offenders? Why was July called “the hungry month”? The Year 1000 answers these questions, and reveals such secrets as the recipe for a medieval form of Viagra and an hallucinogenic treat called “crazy bread”. In the spirit of modern investigative journalism, Lacey and Danziger interviewed the top historians and archaeologists in the field. Their research led them to an ancient and little-known document of the period, the Julius Work Calendar, a
sharply observed guide which takes us back in time to a charming and very human world of kings and revellers, saints and slave-labourers, lingering paganism and profound Christian faith. This exuberant and informative book concludes as the shadow of the millennium descends across England and Christendom. While prophets of doom predict the end of the world, AD 1000 sees the arrival of such bewildering concepts as infinity and zero, along with the abacus – the medieval calculating machine. These are portents of the future, and The Year 1000 finishes by examining the human and social ingredients that were to make for success and achievement in the next thousand years.
