1Q84 The year is 1984, but not for long. Aomame bolts from the cab, walks onto the elevated Tokyo expressway, descends an emergency ladder to the street below, and enters a strange new world. In parallel, a math teacher and aspiring novelist named Tengo gets an interesting offer to rewrite a mysterious 17-year-old's story for the final round of a young writer's literary prize. So begins Haruki Murakami's magnum opus, an epic of staggering proportions that folds in a deliciously intriguing cast of characters and central motifs the moon, Janacek's Sinfonietta, George Orwell's 1984 that acquire powerful resonance as Aomame and Tengo's paths take on a conjoined life of their own, dancing with a protracted elegance that requires nearly 1,000 pages to reach its crowning denouement. 1Q84 was a runaway bestseller in its native Japan, but more importantly, it's easily the grandest work of world literature since Roberto Bolano's 2666 and represents a monstrous literary event. Now would somebody please award Murakami his Nobel Prize?
30 Pieces of Silver There is a blossoming romance between Brandt and Monroe that is interrupted by Dr. Lochum. Although their attraction may be predictable there many detours along the way that keep the reader unsure of their fate, The secondary characters are developed in a way that makes them not only more important to the story but more interesting to the reader.
A Conspiracy of Friends I'm thrilled to have had another chance to visit with my "friends" in Corduroy Mansions, that less-than-nouveau riche block of flats in London's Pimlico section. Big decisions are being made by all the residents and their quirky yet mundane lives always are appealing in the hands of master storyteller Alexander McCall Smith. Wit and wisdom are in lock step as the residents and their assorted friends make it through another turning point in their lives. My personal favorite, Freddie de la Hay, steals the show as rabbit hunting leads him to a terrifying situation and a new home. While William mourns his disappearance, he finds himself being pursued by an unlikely woman and putting a ring on the finger of another woman. Caroline Jarvis trades friendship for romance while Barbara Ragg wonders if she has the right man, after all. Perennial bad boy, Oedipus Snark, is the victim of a chemical reaction that sets the stage for his actions in the next installment while his mother is stunned by him as well as her eccentric brother. Eddie is scheming, newcomer Jane is pining, and another newcomer, Basil, saves the day so all can breathe a bit easier by novel's end.
A Different Time: Gateway To The West Colonel Hamilton finds a town and easily becomes Deputy Sheriff. However, he is contacted by Eve again. She pleads for his help, but he has to make a tough decision. Will he work with Eve and try to go back to the year 2130 or stay in the 1860's and be a feared law man? I cannot wait to find out. I was glad to see that the science-fiction parts weren't too "far out.
A Wanted Man: A Jack Reacher Novel The second half of the book has our agent catching up with an abandoned Reacher and another shocking murder puts them firmly on the trail of the bad guys. As the reader we are treated to the usual short sentences, the menace of Reacher and the bleak American landscape. (And by the way, try reading with Springsteen's Nebraska or Darkness at the Edge of Town on in the background, they are almost soundtracks to Reacher's wandering). We also know there is a fair bit of mystery around the original murder and the background is gently released throughout the book, so as Reacher gets nearer to the bad guys, we get to finally understand the full picture. With the exception of some strange blinking Morse code that felt like Lee Child was trying to be too clever, this whole books works very well and the car scenes are very taunt and claustrophobic. A welcome addition to the series.

Betrayal It is hard for me to believe that any halfway intelligent person would hire a slut to be her personal assistant and then be surprised that she has other moral deficiences as well. Having said that, I feel that Ms. Steel has crafted a novel that is more typical of earlier works. This book has some real heman heart and pathos. I felt myself responding emotionally to the tragedies that occured here and liking the heroine despite her extreme naivete. I enjoyed this book!!!
Better Than Chocolate Since others gave the synopsis of the book, I won't. I looked forward to reading it on a lazy Sunday afternoon and it certainly didn't disappoint! If you are looking for a sweet (pun intended) book to 'take you away' for a few hours, this book is it. The cast of characters are interesting and I'm looking forward to reading more about them in future books. The small town sounded like the perfect place to settle down. I read a lot of authors, and Sheila has come to be one of my favorites. Her books are on my keeper shelf to be enjoyed again and again.
Breath on Embers If you want to read a sensually written and outstanding erotic story, then I believe that Breath On Embers is the perfect choice. This novella will demand your undivided attention. While reading Breath On Embers so many emotions washed over me, left me breathless and craving for more. All I can say is read it. Enjoy!
Child of the Northern Spring: Book One of the Guinevere Trilogy Child covers topics I'd not thought of before (even after reading heaps of stories about Avalon, Merlin, Excalibur, & more for over 40 years!) Who was Gwen before she married? What of her father and their relationship, their kingdom? Horses? Her love of horses is right up front and center. I almost stood up and dusted my boots off it was so real! When she and Arthur first meet, what happens? They end up racing their horses to see who wins! Now that's my kind of story! A fun, realistic, tough and intelligent Gwen. And the historical detail gives the story its deep roots of stability.
Crown of Vengeance
Having read both the Enduring Flame and Obsidian Mountain trilogies, I was intrigued by the back history of Valiessiar Farcarinon, who is referenced in them. I found it a very engaging story, difficult to put down. It is interesting to compare those original elves to the "modern" ones depicted in the new series. Farcarinon is obsessed with revenge and the prophecy about the Endarkened. The background about He Who Is clarifies much that was mentioned in the Obsidian books. It is a brutal story about a brutal people, far removed from the placid elves of the other books. It is a very enjoyable addition to the legendarium. I look forward to the future books in this Dragon Prophecy series.

Dominion: A Novel of Mystery This is a truly remarkable book for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's a top rate thriller. The plot is strongly driven by richly drawn and diverse characters and a plausible setting. The setting is remarkable because it's an alternative world where real events from 1939 onwards are different. An alternative 1950s Britain is the setting for a tale which builds slowly as various elements are introduced and ultimately brought together. Mr Sansom is a first rate storyteller. 'Dominion' demonstrates the strength and skill of his writing in that he asks the reader to believe in fiction as fact as the basic premise.
Dream Lake There is so much to like in this book. I thought the author did an excellent job of creating dynamic characters especially with Alex and Zoe. She went beyond the typical tortured hero and healing-woman tropes and gave both main characters lovely depth and surprising layers. Zoe's own background is filled in and is a little sad and a little
happy. I am glad that the author did not go the easy route in how she presented the troubled relationship between Zoe and her father. It felt realistic. I also thought that Alex's issue were also presented realistically without feeling too dramatic. In the earlier books his darker personality stood out and I am glad that the author did not temper it here. I was also very gratified with how much information on different things were presented in this book but did not sound like you were being lectured at or that she was trying to impress us with how much research she had done on a subject. There were wonderful descriptive moments of Alex's craftsmanship as a carpenter as he is doing work on the various houses that made me feel as if I simply dropped in from time to time to watch him work. There are of course the fantastic and mouth watering descriptions of the meals that Zoe cooks and the blissed out reactions of people as they describe how the food tastes to them. I am still thinking about that oatmeal and I don't even like oatmeal.
Elemental: The First What a wonderful and creative story! I could not stop reading it. It is about a girl Rose who has been gifted with the gift of healing...and much more. It has a great back story about Halika Dacome...A Warminster legend. A love triangle is forming between her, Morgan and Aiden I can't wait to read more! Rose is a great character well developed and very mature for her age. A good role model for young girls. This is a great book for young teens and adults.

Heft The fact that he weights somewhere between 500-600 pounds is just the beginning of Arthur's confession. He states, "In my letters to you these past two decades I have been untruthful by omission." He admits that not only has he not taught in years, but that he hasn't left his house in over a decade. He ends the lengthy missive, "In spite of everything, at heart I am still the same Arthur.
How To Stop A Witch The characters were fantastic. I loved Greg, and his discomfort as the two girls fight for his attention. He gallantly faces his demise, even though he would rather not. The dragon slayers added more comic relief and Lucky was one of my favorite characters. His optimism and "luck" were exceptional. Mordred was completely unattached and rather funny in his blatant dislike for just about everyone.
Last Chance To Run LAST CHANCE TO RUN was an amazing read! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The characters were so relatable and real. The way Dianna Love writes, you could practically feel the characters' hearts beating in your own chest! The suspense and adventure had me racing through the pages. I am a big fan and will continue to be one. Her writing makes you forget everything else that is going on around you. It draws you in and keeps you there. I can't wait to read whatever she comes up with next!!! And I will make sure to go back and read whatever I have missed. I had so much fun reading this book!!!
Memoria: A Corporation of Lies
A big plan called the Vaccination is in the offing and Memoria is offering it free of charge as an introductory incentive. But what is it really? And how is a United States Congressman, who is also a board member of Memoria involved? What will Frank Shelby do to clear himself of trumped up charges? Is there anything he can do in the face of an organization that can erase the memories of witnesses and bend reality to suit its own purpose?
Moon Called Mercy becomes involved in the story when a teenager walks into her garage looking for work. She gives him one warily, because her senses tell he's a werewolf, and he's not from the local clan. But all too soon, men and werewolves come looking for him, the local Alpha has been attacked in his own home, and a dead body has been left as a warning on Mercy's front porch. The action just heats up from there, as the local seethe of vampires and at least one local witch take an interest. Fortunately, Mercy is quick on her feet and has a keen, analytical mind when it comes to sorting out conspiracy theories.

Redemption Several months ago a good friend started reading Chosen book one. Before she was halfway through the book she told me I needed to buy this book. I did and she and I raced through the three books that had been released. I was very fortunate to win an advanced copy of redemption from the author and savored it knowing it would be the last.
Seeing Redd In SEEING REDD, the violence soars to higher, more vicious levels, as befitting Redd's self-given title of Her Imperial Viciousness. It seems that for every few pages of plotting, character building, or other action, there's at least one page where people are beheaded, maimed, or otherwise killed. The slowly developing love story between Alyss and Dodge seems to surge then halt and surge again, while another love story sprouts from nowhere. Other plot points seem to work in a smooth manner. The settings are wildly imaginative as the characters travel in places not seen in the last book. The story is good and world solid, but the sheer volume and styling of violence end up detracting from an otherwise fine fantasy interpretation.
Separate Beds Tom and Annie had three children but Mia, one of a set of twins, has moved out of the home after a furious fight with her parents. She has been estranged from her family for five years or so. The other children, Mia's twin brother, Jake, is himself struggling in a disintegrating marriage and is in the throes of single fatherhood of his year old daughter, Maisie. Emily, the third Nicholson child, is, at age 23, trying to find her own way in the world. Tom's aging mother makes up the fourth generation of Nicholson who finds herself adrift after her money runs out and she must leave her nursing home and move in with Annie and Tom. All this sounds complicated, but it really isn't. Each character and situation is beautifully drawn by Buchan, who writes about the 18 months in the Nicholson family's life with great care. The resolution to the story, while not unexpected, is not arrived at easily. Buchan is such a good writer of contemporary family life in Britain that her plots and characters never seem the same from novel to novel. "Separate Beds" is another good Buchan novel.
Shaedes of Gray: A Shaede Assassin Novel With extraordinary pacing in a peculiar new world, I really had no idea what would happen next, and was so pleased with the way things play out. There is an abundance of awesome action, as well as raw romance, all wrapped up in a fast-past story that is fresh and unparalleled. Shaedes of Gray is going down as one of my favorite new series, and Darian as one of my new favorite heroines of 2011. The next book in the series, Blood Before Sunrise, will be released next July, and Bonilla's series is now on my short auto-buy list.
Shroud of Dishonour (A Templar Knight Mystery) The story picks up where the last one left off - Bascot de Marins, our Templar Knight, is preparing to leave when the body of a murdered prostitute is discovered in a way that casts suspicion upon the Templars. Bascot is charged with finding the murderer and restoring the Templars' good name. This book focuses primarily upon Bascot, and Gianni is a bit of an afterthought in this one. I didn't really mind, because there were incredibly rich and well researched accounts of life during that time, as well as insights into the minds of men who would choose to belong to a holy, military order like the Templars.

Someone Like You After catching her sleazy husband Lyle in his office literally with his pants down, Jill is summarily fired from her law firm. Ever resourceful, she returns to her hometown of Los Lobos, where she takes over an eclectic law practice until she can find the perfect corporate gig. MacKenzie Kendrick has returned to Los Lobos also. The object of Jill's teenage crush, he returned to bring a little stability to his life after years of undercover work have left him on the edge and ever further from his daughter. In order to share future custody of Emily with his ex, he has to keep his nose clean as the new sheriff of Los Lobos. A hard proposition for the former bad boy turned lawman, whose biggest feat will be breaking down the barrier his daughter has established between them. Jill's last memory of Mac is her 18th birthday, where she waited in his bedroom and bared all with the intention of seducing him. He promptly threw up. The next time she was ready to bare all for a guy, Evan took one look at her and pronounced he was gay. Since Lyle did not throw up or have a sudden lifestyle change, she married him. Mallery's writing is crisp and funny, the romance spicy, and her characters memorable. Add assorted quirky citizens including a tarot card reading aunt, mobsters, a secretary who doesn't want to put in a full day's work, and a cranky old man who wants to sue his neighbor over a fence built a century ago, and you have a riveting story about small town life that only Mallery could come up with. I cannot get enough of her books!
Super Human This is an entertaining save the world thriller that pays homage to the Teen Titans of DC. Action-packed throughout, young adult readers will relish the teenage heroes battling the ruthless villains while their parents are ailing. Although the villains fail to live up to their reputation as callous and cold-bloodedly cruel (no Joker in the pack) and a romance seems more of a requirement (pet peeve of mine -others might like the relationship sidebar), this is a fun good superhero vs. bad supervillains.
Tears in Rain I should say that as a re-exploration of the psychological traumas of the replicants, Tears in Rain provides deeper and more extensive representations of what it means to be more or less indistinguishable from regular humans, but to live with the knowledge of an imposed and knowable disconnect date. Montero's characters provide a range of convincing emotions and behavior consistent with what we might expect, especially with the expectation that determination and a certain ruthlessness (in the use of violence, especially) would be part of their existence. And more the political and social implications for a world "divided" between traditionally born human beings and their near-twins, manufactured and so, in traditional terms, not "natural," are explored in some impressive depth and detail. The us/them conflicts between the indigenous (or simply the predecessors with power) and the "other" or alien are ramped up effectively in this novel, which also explores possible resolutions.
The Ambassadors Wife His tale is crisply told and his sense of characterisation uncannily real I loved his Inspector Tay as he wrestled to give up smoking then gave in gracefully. There is detailed insider knowledge of Singapore and Bangkok which create an excellent backdrop to horrific murders that Tay is reluctantly required to solve or pass them on to other agencies. His dogged refusal and his tangles with his boss make for fascinating reading.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel A beautiful gift of a story. I bought this book recently because the movie reviews look so good. After reading this book I do not want to see the movie - nothing could top the magical tale the author spins. I did not want it to end. Funny, touching, beautifully written. Characters you do not want to leave you.

The Best Thing Brody can't get the time of day from Tori ever since that impulsive kiss, she's avoided him with the same brutal efficiency she uses to manage his family's construction company office. The company can't afford to lose her, and Brody's come to realize that he can't live without her. But how can he convince Tori that he's a changed man?
The Calling Mandy is in the midst of bringing some normal back into her life. She has recently lost a breast to cancer and her selfesteem to an ex who dumped her when life got too real for him to handle. (That's right him to handle, selfish man all readers will love to hate.) She is bringing herself back from a horrific illness. She's went back to the nursing job that she loves, she's begun spending time with friends that stayed with her during her illness. She still has many doubts about what life has in store for her. Then a chance encounter with her ex's best friend (Justin) gives her something to look forward to. He's invited her to spend the day hanging out with him on the beach. It's something they have done many times before, but this time Justin doesn't have to hide his attraction.
The Damnation Affair Jack Gabriel's been the sheriff in Damnation almost since the town grew out of the dust and the mud. He keeps the peace sort of and rides the circuit every dawn and dusk with the chartermage, making sure the wilderness doesn't seep into the fragile attempt at civilization. Out there, away from the cities clinging to the New World's eastern rim, he doesn't remember what he was. Or at least, not much.
The Devil to Pay
If you're looking for a compelling read, complete with two angst filled principal characters and a few highly sensual love scenes, "The Devil to Pay" has your name on it. Well written and briskly paced, this was a fast and completely absorbing read. Liz Carlyle did a wonderful job of "fleshing" out her heroine and hero and making them seem like real (with both good points and hang-ups) and likable (in spite of Devellyn's rather over the top reaction when he discovers who the Black Angel really is). Some readers, however, may feel a little leery about the hero and heroine's first sexual encounter which starts off with the hero more or less forcing himself on her. I'll admit I'm still of two minds about that scene, in spite of the fact the author did salvage that scene completely. All in all however, a really good read.

The Sacred Stone A mysterious meteor brings treachery, discord, and violent death to those who seek to possess it in the sixth volume of these thrilling interlinked medieval mysteries 1067. In the desolate wastes of Greenland, a band of hunters stumble across a strangely shaped object which has fallen from the sky. At first, the mysterious "sky-stone" seems to bring them good luck, healing a lame boy and guaranteeing a good catch of furs. But violence and murder soon follow in fortune's wake as the villagers fight and struggle among themselves to gain control of the precious stone. Over the next 600 years, the Sky-Stone falls into the hands of crusading knights, the wicked Sheriff of Devon, a group of radical young kabbalists, the dying King Henry III, and a band of traveling players.
The Thousand Emperors As structure, the novel is part action adventure, part investigation of the powerful with the attending risks, part sense of wonder all written in the wonderful style that made Gary Gibson one of the top sf authors of today with all 7 books to date read by me the moment I got them, either on publication or occasionally as advanced reading copies.
Throne of Glass The main character of Celaena is initially very stiff. For the first few pages, I was wondering if I was going to like her at all. Then she opens her mouth to speak and the snark pours out and I decided I wanted to be her best friend. I found it wonderful how her character unfolds over the course of the novel, and you find out more and more about her as the pages go past. Even in the end of the book, you're finding out a few more things that add loads of depth to her character and yet add more questions that need to be answered. Despite having no idea what it would be like to live her life, I found myself connecting with her all the same. Originally, I wasn't very excited by the idea of a love triangle forming between Celaena, Dorian and Chaol (or Captain Westfall, as the blurb names him). After all, you know how I feel about love triangles. (Hint: I hate them.) However, this one wasn't badly done. Celaena is absolutely NOT a air-headed girl, and the guys played it out nicely. There was no brooding testosterone match. Plus, the love triangle was hardly the focus of the book AND it ended interestingly. So yes, believe it or not, I have found a love triangle I approve of.
Witchling (Curse of Kin) Nera is a normal teenage girl living in Ireland, or so she thought until she discovers the family secret.. now her world is forever changed.

Predatory Dinosaurs of the World: A Complete Illustrated Guide 1989 | ISBN-10: 0671619462, 0671687336 | PDF | 464 pages | 43 MB Paul thinks dinosaurs are fun, and he conveys his enthusiasm in this well-written account of their life and times. In the first part of the book he describes how the predatory dinosaurs (meat-eating dinosaurs, as opposed to herbivorous dinosaurs) evolved, what they looked like and how they lived. He dispels some commonly held notions: dinosaurs were not cold-blooded, slow or stupid; they were, in fact, the ancestors of birds. The second part of the book is an illustrated catalogue of all important predatory dinosaurs known to date, a new reorganization of predatory dinosaur taxonomy and systematics. Dinosaur are obviously the love of Paul's life, and he sometimes makes us forget that
these extraordinary creatures have been extinct for at least 65 million years. In addition, as a paleontologist who does his own illustrations, he can back up his contention that dinosaurs "look neat."

Future Christ: A Lesson in Heresy 2011 | ISBN-10: 1441118330 | PDF | 184 pages | 6 MB One of the most exciting names in contemporary French philosophy explores the lessons of heresy to construct a new understanding of 'belief'. "Future Christ" is the first English translation of the work of Francois Laruelle, one of the most exciting voices in contemporary French philosophy and the creator of the practice of 'non-philosophy'. In this work
Laruelle draws on material from the traditions of Christianity, Judaism and Gnosticism, but he does so by suspending their authority. This adventure in non-philosophy does not claim to think for religion, but from it as material and with disinterest towards its self-given status as ultimate authority. This provocative, yet remarkably accessible book introduces philosophy to the lessons of heresy and makes use of them in a non-philosophical 'dualysis' of messianism and apocalypticism. Laruelle investigates the 'heretic question', analogous to but historically distinguished from the 'Jewish question', to develop a 'non-Christian science' that struggles against and for our World. Future Christ thus opens up novel ways of thinking within existing religious and philosophical thought and marks an incisive and wideranging non-philosophical engagement with key contemporary debates in philosophy and theology.
