The Walnut Tree: A Holiday Tale When the friend delivers and the Germans take Belgium and it becomes clear Paris is next, Lady Elspeth heads for Calais to catch a boat home, but she's too late. A wickedly attractive army captain helps her get out of there and onto a train. Back in England she'll encounter Bess, a member of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service, who'll tell her how and where to train for and become a battlefield nurse herself, (which Elspeth does, after dropping the title that precedes her name, and thus the requirement for a guardian's approval). All the key ingredients for a most compelling wartime love story are now pretty much in place. It kept this reader up way past her bedtime to polish it off in a single sitting.
Tunnel Vision I particularly enjoy books that can create a true sense of place with local landmarks and locations. Braver's novel includes just enough details to allow a reader familiar with Boston to picture the sights and sounds of the city, which enhanced my enjoyment of the story-line, especially the growing horror that the main character, Zack, feels as he undergoes repeated "suspensions" induced by Dr. Luria and her crew in an effort to evaluate the "truth/reality" of neardeath-experiences.
The Nightcrawler
The Nightcrawler isnt like a lot of other horror titles out there. It's focus is on character and story instead of the blood and gore. It's an atmospheric, spook-fest of eerie scares as well as good times. I found myself thoroughly enjoying one of the character's adventures, while wondering what was going to happen to the other character.
The Poison Tide A tense story of a spy undercover during the First World War, Andrew Williams recreates the early years of the Secret Service as evocatively as anything by John le Carre or Robert Harris. The Poison Tide is the first in a series of loosely linked novels set in that world and 'possesses a richness of characterisation and intelligence that few thrillers can match...' Sunday Times. 1915. German guns are on their way to Ireland. The British government faces its worst nightmare insurrection at home while it struggles with bloody stalemate on the Western Front. A British spy, Sebastian Wolff of the new Secret Service Bureau, is given the task of hunting down its enemies: one a traitor reviled by the society that honoured him as a national hero the other a German-American doctor who, instead of healing the sick, is developing a terrifying new weapon that he will use in the country of his birth. Wolff's mission will take him undercover into the corridors of power in Berlin, then across the Atlantic in a race against time to prevent the destruction of the ships and supplies Britain so desperately needs to stave off defeat.
I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: The Search for Sam This is the continuing story of the Lorien Legacies series. It begins where " The Lost Files: The Fallen Legacies" left off. Most likely, you're not reading this review if you haven't read all of the other books in the series, so from this point forward, I don't feel bad about giving any spoilers away.

Shortly afterward, Charlotte Stone's terminally ill mother dies and then, within weeks, two of her teenage friends commit suicide. With her home life disintegrating and both her father and brother racing toward self-destruction, Charlotte realizes that her own personal nightmare is just beginning.
The Thing Itself (The Brighton Mystery) The gripping new thriller in Peter Guttridge’s highly acclaimed Brighton series. The truth will out. Thriller writer Victor Tempest is dead and his son, the disgraced ex-Chief Constable Bob Watts, is discovering what really happened in the unsolved Brighton Trunk Murder of 1934. At the same time, DS Sarah Gilchrist has a lead that may establish the truth about the Milldean Massacre. If she can stay alive long enough to follow it . . . Jimmy Tingley, once SAS, now avenging angel, is in Europe on the trail of the Balkan gangsters who wreaked bloody havoc in Brighton. He’s armed for World War III, but is that enough when he’s his own most dangerous enemy?
Up and Down
Best book I've read in a long time. Terry Fallis, like his new character Landon, is a Canadian treasure. The concept of a national draw, each in Canada and the States, for astronaut training to visit the Space Station, goes from typical PR ludicrousness to a labour of love in an organic growth that drags the reader, whether kicking and screaming or diving head first, into an unimagined empathy with the inspiring players.
Vanished in the Dunes (A Hamptons Mystery) It is a shame to think Allan Retzky's talent has been kept from us until the publication of his first novel, Vanished in the Dunes. This is a first class mystery that is so well conceived and written that you will not be able to put the book down. As another reviewer noted, don't start it before going to bed or you will have a short night's sleep. I do not usually read novels as I prefer biography and non-fiction. However, this is about as fine an exception as you could wish for.
What a Ghoul Wants: A Ghost Hunter Mystery This series just keeps getting better. At turns comical and scary, beautiful imagery, and wonderful locations. The characters are kooky and fun. Wonderful read.

White Star Most importantly, the main characters: Lord Orrin and Lady Evelyn are very well done. Orrin is one of those bad guys who the girls fall for. He's dark, handsome, brooding and someone you do not want to make angry. Lady Evelyn, a High Priestess and a Mage, has serious power. She can throw down with the best of them and burn people to a crisp if need be. She's one of those really cool characters that you love to read about.
Winter Wonderland I am a keen fan of Belinda Jones, and feel she doesn't get the recognition she deserves in the US. Her books have realistic dialogue, from characters that you believe in. It is only Belinda that can make me laugh one moment and gently weep another. She is great with her plots, and the books seem to melt rapidly towards the disappointment of having finished. She obviously is a keen traveller, because her observations on Quebec are far better than you would find in a stuffy impersonal old fashioned travel guide.
The Courier's New Bicycle This book is the story of gender transgressive, Salibury Forth, and his/her life as a courier of contraband hormones in a dystopian near-future Melbourne. A pandemic has cause widespread decay among society due to its effect of making a large proportion of the population sterile. The governing authorities are religious zealots and the world is not a very pleasant place any more.
The Hunger Pains: A Parody While this wasn't horrible it wasn't all that funny either. I got about half way through and was truly bored because it was just more of the same type of humor. I did find the modifications of names, places and events creative and humorous, some more than others and when you first start the book, it is entertaining with this approach and you will recognized the original plot which it sticks to closely. That is definitely a plus for Hunger Games fans and part of the fun of reading this as opposed to other parodies that are fart and poop type of jokes with no plot.
The Intercept: A Jeremy Fisk Novel Jeremy and his partner, Kristen Gersten are in a race against time to solve a terrorist plot that somehow is clearly intended to mark the anniversary of 9/11 with a new outrage. The stage is set when Fisk discovers a fragment of a coded message taken when Osama bin Laden was assassinated that speaks to a new and devious plot to forever weaken the spirit of the secular western world.

The Mystery of a Hansom Cab First published in 1886, it was an overnight sensation, selling hundreds of thousands of copies around the world and being translated into eleven languages. Over a century later, Hansom Cab has lost none of its page-turning power.
She Never Knew Not what I had expected but a very interesting, emotional and thought provoking story. Would seem outlandish that someone could keep their sanity through so much trauma.
Sorry What follows unfolds quickly and intelligently. Drvenkar uses a constantly-shifting narrative perspective to weave a tale of violence and deep-seated trauma that is at times shocking, at times sad, and at all times keeps the pages turning. The multiple perspectives really work here, as the story jumps forward and back in time and from place to place, dropping hints along the way but keeping this reader guessing all the way to the end.
Sweat Sweat takes place over a 5 week time span traveling from Seattle, WA to Saipan and ending in Washington, D.C.. with a premise ripped from the headlines. A multi cat and mouse chase at the speed of a run away train. Sweat has it all and more, unethical politicians, kidnapping, murder, greed, bribery, assassination attempts, deceit, greed, truth, police procedural investigations, betrayals, forced labor, stake outs, organized crime, friendships, love relationships and an ending that will leave the reader wanting a sequel. Another amazing, white knuckle read!! Mark Gilleo is both talented and gifted when it comes to page turning story telling. A master!! Bravo!! A book not to be passed by!! Extraordinary!!!
Talking to the Dead Fi Griffiths is a new detective with the Wales police department. Something about her is different than others but it is fairly subtle. It is obvious enough, however, so that her colleagues wonder what makes Fi tick. Fi is very smart, a Cambridge philosophy graduate. However, there are two years on her resume that are unaccounted for. Fi's answer to questions about this two year blank in her history is that she was sick.

The Best Laid Plans If you allow the book to stand on its own merits - without hype or celebrity promotion - it fairs quite well. Best Laid Plans is funny, unique, and an enjoyable read. In the opening chapter you'll find this gem of a sentence: "Let's just say she was rather enthusiastically lobbying his caucus." Yeah, Terry Fallis went there.
Murder Buys a T-Shirt Glory and her friend, Karen the reporter, are at the scene of a traffic accident in which the high school football star Kevin Stanley dies. The police assume the victim was intoxicated because he just left a keg party so they take their time on the investigation. At the shop Bluebeard insists: "It wasn't an accident" and he leaves newspapers on the table that includes articles about Uncle Louis leading Glory to want to learn more about her mysterious relative. Glory believes that her Uncle Louis is speaking to her. To prove to herself she is not insane, Glory and Karen investigate Kevin's death with the help of two buddies Ernie and Felipe.
Murder Club Detective Inspector Delaney is looking forward to spending Christmas with Kate Walker and his young daughter Siobhan, but the past always had a way of ruining Jack's best-laid plans. And this holiday season is no different! A year previously, Delaney was responsible for the arrest of Michael Robinson, a viciously violent rapist. Robinson
always claimed he was set up by the police but before he could be brought to trail he was brutally attacked in prison and left for dead.
Murder is a Piece of Cake Josie Marcus has just landed the creme de la creme of mystery shopping assignments. Neverfall Neverfall is probably the best novella I've read, and is a must read for a reader of the Everneath series. Why? The novella adds essential information, changes the perspective to Cole's so we get to understand this enigmatic character better, and is well thought out. This novella focuses on Cole, probably the most fascinating character in this trilogy. We get to learn more of what happened in Everneath through his eyes and there are definitely some surprises there! Furthermore, the story gets propelled to the present between books, and we see what happens in the background, learn more about Cole and his motivations, learn more about the Everliving and Cole's friends.

Option to Kill (The Nathan McBride Series) I happened to stumble on this author and the first two books in the Nathan McBride series. So far, I have really enjoyed the series. The writing is fluid, the characters have depth to them, and the author does a good job of building suspense. I also appreciate the fact that the books are well edited, as I sometimes find that when some books are rushed to printing the editing is less than desired.
Paper Dolls The second book in the Dollhouse Trilogy is a welcome addition to the first: we get to know more of the back story to Jessamine's life, as well as how Cassie copes with her time spent in the Dollhouse. This is more of an in-depth look into the girls' minds and emotional state, as well as an introduction to an even more terrifying reality- I won't tell you, no spoilers here!
Prophecy (The Dragon King Chronicles) The world itself is fresh and steeped in traditional Asian lore. While it might be difficult for some readers who are more accustomed to western fantasy worlds to grasp the nuances and references, as someone who has read a lot of Asiancentered fiction I found the author's world-building and nods to tradition spot on. And I especially loved the use of the Korean language and style of speaking throughout the book.
Queen of Swords It's really weird writing a review for a novel I beta-read... a while ago. For starters, I need to be totally up front Katee Robert is my critique partner and has been since I first had a critique partner. She wouldn't have lasted that long if I didn't love her work. So, what you're about to read is a gushing review, but it's a gushing review because I truly think her stuff is fantastic.
Replica A second novel is always a tricky prospect. It's difficult for an author to find the right balance between creating something familiar enough to appeal to readers of the first novel, while making it original enough that it gives readers something fresh and new.

Ripped Apart First let me say that this type of book is not my usual read, but I decided to give it a try. I am not at all disappointed with this book. It is well written, action packed and pulls at the heart strings. The story is about a mother who has a son with a bad heart and without a transplant, he will die. There is a tragic accident involving students on a bus, and 2 little boys lose their lives. Of course the family of one little boy that dies donates his heart and the little boy (Tyler) that needs the heart gets it. This is when the action and more tragedy starts.
Riven First I thought the characters were realistic and believable. Thomas Carey, a man called to the pulpit but frustrated by having to deal with members of a congregation who want to control the church rather than use it for the purpose it was intended. Dealing with small and petty people drives Thomas away from that which he loves. Thomas eventually becomes a prison chaplain and in doing so finds his true calling. Then there is Brady Wayne Darby, a man that after one bad decision after another ends up on death row placed there for a murder that didn't have to happen. It is the juxtaposition and interaction of these two characters that supply the real meat of Riven.
Full Moon Kisses Then things grow still more complicated when a gang of sketchy guys from a neigh-boring town comes to Legend's Run just before the big Werewolf Festival. What, or whom, are they looking for?
Ghost Key When the bruja were driven from Esperanza, not all were destroyed. Tess Livingston's niece, Maddie was taken as a host for the most evil Dominica who then fled to South Florida where she readies her tribe to take over Cedar Key while trying not to attract too much attention, especially from Wyra. Wyra, former lover, present enemy of Dominica, is closing in on Dominica and her tribe of "hungry ghosts", forcing her to make mistakes in her planning process and driving away most of her tribe. The ghosts who have split away from Dominica decide to help the humans and Chasers defeat Dominica.
Gilded: The St. Croix Chronicle Once again we're immersed in a split world, that of London above and below, where the line between the classes is darkly drawn, and where Cherry is not quite completely a part of either. Gilded picks up where Tarnished left off with Cherry trying to fit in with the upper-crusters of London above, but continuing her work as a Collector below the drift as she tries to get over the ordeal she went through in Tarnished.

Indigo Awakening (The Hunted Series, Book 1) This book has been on my wishlist ever since I first heard about it and so when I was asked to review it, by the fabulous author Jordan Dane herself, well to say I was excited was an understatement! I loved the whole concept and world-building, it was an original story to add to the paranormal genre. Most of the characters were so likeable in this book, I say most but really the ones I don't like are the 'baddies' because let's face it, that's why they're not particularly likeable anyway.
Into Hell A stop at a roadside diner turns into a near acid-trip of horror. When Stephanie's daughter Carrie disappears, the search becomes a slew of blood, bodies, rats, tunnels, and an axe wielding maniac you would never have expected. Every time you think you have a clue what is going on, the rug is pulled out from under you again and the story twists into something stranger.
Just a Kiss Away
Arriving on a lush Pacific island, Eulalie Grace LaRue was soon to be reunited with the father she hadn't seen since childhood. Yet before Lollie's dreamed-of meeting could take place, the lovely Southern belle was caught in the crossfire of a violent revolution and thrown into the rugged arms of Sam Forester.
King of Swords (Assassin series #1) One of Russell Blake's many gifts is his ability to take current events and twist them until they squeal. He does it again in KING OF SWORDS with the fight against the Mexican drug cartels, blurring the line between justice and vengeance. El Rey is the legendary assassin whose expertise is in demand by the cartel leaders. Captain Romero Cruz is the detective whose burning goal is to bring down the cartels and save Mexico's future. The passion of both men was born in brutal violence, and Blake leverages their hate and need for retribution to maximum effect.
Knowing Laurel Dewey's "Knowing" is for the reader that wants more out of a thriller. More heart, more soul, more conflict, more levels, more beauty, more edge. Jane Perry, the cop who is slowly beginning to love herself, is back and about to leave on a journey. When the book opens, the journey she envisions, the journey she is preparing for is daunting enough, but before long the road ahead veers off in a direction no one could possibly expect. Without giving anything away, I need to say that nothing is average about this story. It sweeps you away right out of the gate, with symbols, ideas and questions that will keep you up through the night wondering, guessing and hoping.

Lambs To The Slaughter Tensions are running high in the small mining village of Bellingsworth. There has been a call for further strikes, and retired miner Len Hopkins, who was known to be against a new strike, is murdered. Detective Inspector Monika Paniatowski learns that Len had been threatened the night before he died by another old miner. Was he killed due to the stand he took against further strikes? Or are there more sinister forces at work? Paniatowski investigates, but finds that she has problems much closer to home . . .
Malice: The Faithful and the Fallen Malice is a fantastic balance between traditional fantasy and the dark modern breed of fantasy so in vogue over the last 5-10 years. It starts deceptively softly a young boy wanting to be a warrior, intrigue in the royal court, so far, good trad beginings but then explodes out into a hugely complex world of conflict, betrayal, jealousy and blind ambition. Very modern and quite grim. But undercut with friendship, magic, courage and perhaps a refreshing absense of cynacism.
All She Ever Wanted
This book is slightly frustrating to review because the beginning was so good. I really loved it and felt the author did an amazing job of portraying a woman suffering from post-partum depression. However, the abduction plot didn't pack the same emotional punch and I became annoyed with some of the characters after Annabelle goes missing.
Betrothal I have to buy the next book now, and it was a very good choice although it was free. Borrow, or buy you must read.
Brass & Bone Being Simon Thorne, friend and collaborator to Lady Abigail Moran, isn't easy. Yes, being a daring thief does have its charms. But I still haven't convinced Abigail that she loves me, and thievery, for all the romantical writers say of it, is not the way to wealth. Especially if Abigail insists we continuously repair the airship with our illgotten gains.

The Trouble with Fate: A Mystwalker Novel
Trouble with Fate My name is Hedi Peacock and I have a secret. I’m not human, and I have the pointy Fae ears and Were inner-bitch to prove it. As fairy tales go, my childhood was damn near perfect, all fur and magic until a werewolf killed my father and the Fae executed my mother. I’ve never forgiven either side. Especially Robson Trowbridge. He was a part-time werewolf, a full-time bastard, and the first and only boy I ever loved. That is, until he became the prime suspect in my father’s death… Today I’m a half-breed barista working at a fancy coffee house, living with my loopy Aunt Lou and a temperamental amulet named Merry, and wondering where in the world I’m going in life. A pretty normal existence, considering. But when a pack of Weres decides to kidnap my aunt and force me to steal another amulet, the only one who can help me is the last person I ever thought I’d turn to: Robson Trowbridge. And he’s as annoyingly beautiful as I remember. That’s the trouble with fate: Sometimes it barks. Other times it bites. And the rest of the time it just breaks your heart. Again…
Death at the Jesus Hospital: A Lord Francis Powerscourt Investigation Three men are found with their throats cut, and all are connected in some way to an ancient City of London livery company, the Silkworkers. Lord Powerscourt has no shortage of suspects or suspicions. The first victim had shadowy links with the Secret Service. The second had wiped fifteen years out of his own past. The third, a man who collected women at church during Christmas Carol services, had been threatened by angry husbands and disinherited sons. All the victims had been opposed to the reorganization of the Silkworkers' finances and, interestingly, Sir Peregrine Fishborne, the head of the Silkworkers, was present just before each victim's death. Lord knows that the key to solving the mystery lies in the strange markings found on the bodies, which no coroners can identify.

Rule I had loved Rule Archer since the first moment I ever laid eyes on him. He was everything I shouldn't want and the only person I went out of my way to not try and please. He only saw me as a brat, and an entitled, stuck up princess but worse than that all he saw when he looked at me was his deceased twins girl. It broke my heart because as much as I had loved Remy Archer there was never anything romantic between us and no matter how hard I tried to convince
myself that loving Rule was a terrible idea, my poor heart just wouldn't listen. We tolerated each other, barely and had forged an uneasy alliance until one night I had too much to drink and changed the way we were forever. Suddenly life long secrets were no longer hidden and the one thing I always wanted for myself seemed obtainable as long as I was willing to go through hell to hold onto it. Shaw Landon was a class act and I had no idea what to do with her. She was tied to my family, tied to the person that was my other half so I tolerated her and her haughty attitude when I didn't have any other choice. What I didn't know was that a short skirt and too many cocktails on her birthday was going to change my outlook on her for the rest of my life. Some people thought I hid behind all my tattoos and piercings, that I tried to distance myself from my dead twin, Shaw saw through it all and wasn't scared of what was underneath. We weren't supposed to be together, weren't supposed to be anything up uncomfortable acquaintances but that all changed in the blink of an eye. Now I had to figure out just how a girl like her and a guy like me were supposed to be in love without destroying each other. Add in her custom made ex and two disapproving sets of parents and the whole situation sounded like it was more trouble then it was worth. Recommended for mature readers due to sexual content, language and drinking

Blue Blood Sara Blaedel is one of the most highly rated and bestselling crime writers in Denmark, which means that her work is not only going to have to distinguish itself from the shelves filled with Scandinavian crime fiction, but with a strong female cop as the protagonist in her books, expectations are going to be raised and comparisons made to The Killing. Blue Blood - published previously as Call Me Princess - and Detective Inspector Louise Rick, dealing with a case that is less sensationalised and rather more straightforward as a police procedural, can't really live up to such expectations, but there are other aspects that make this a good solid thriller, and one that delves into some interesting areas. That area of interest is the whole area of on-line dating and the dangers associated with rape. In Blue Blood, a number of women have been tied up and brutally beaten while having consensual sex with a man they met on internet chat-rooms. Using aliases associated with nobility, he manages to appeal to a certain type of woman looking to for a man of old-fashioned charm and sophistication, but what develops in the bedroom is far from what the women expect. Inspector Louise Rick realises that not only are the boundaries blurred when it comes to the whole etiquette of on-line dating, but that there is a whole night-life subculture out there in Copenhagen that she is completely unaware of, and it's one that presents a particular challenge to the police. There's nothing particularly to distinguish Sara Blaedel's female police detective from many others - Rick's dedication to her job taking its toll on her own personal relationships, her association with the press being a complicated one on account of her best friend being a journalist interested in the case - and Blaedel's detailing of the procedural issues and investigation techniques relating to rape cases is fairly straightforward, meticulous and realistic. There's real consideration for the impact of rape on its victims and Louise Rick has to juggle the sensitivity of the case and the feelings of the victims with how the crimes are reported by the press, needing to warn the public of the dangers and gain their assistance in finding the rapist. What Blaedel does well in Blue Blood however is manage to maintain the pace and tension of the investigation alongside the crime procedural without getting bogged down in technicalities, or indeed without resorting to sensationalised writing. There are a few aspects that inevitably make the case more personal for DI Rick which are more than a little coincidental, but by and large, Blue Blood handles the difficult issues raised here very well, offering an intriguing insight not only into the dangers of on-line dating and rape, but also the difficulties faced by any police force now dealing with crime involving the anonymity of social media.

What had once brought me strength has now made me weak and it was no one’s fault but my own. I did this and unfortunately he would now be the one to suffer for it. I could feel my heart breaking into a million pieces all over again and the feeling made me want to die.” At eighteen years old Bennett had finally realized what her feelings for Gray meant. Through all the loss and love that they had been through with each other nothing was going to tear them apart, except maybe time. She was willing to fight for her new found love of this boy she had always known. But forces beyond their control were willing to do whatever it took to do just that. With Gray heading off to the police academy and her headed to college things were bound to change. Time apart, temptation, lies and loss would test the strength of the relationship they thought would outlast anything. Five years later Bennett and Gray will be faced with a reality neither one of them ever thought possible. It’s up to Gray to save Bennett from a force so strong it will test his strength, love and undying devotion he swore to her all those years ago. They both learn that life isn’t always fair and the things you desire most in life can come at a costly price.
Breaking Beautiful In the final chapter of gray and Bennett's story their love and faith in each other will be tested beyond the norm. Recounting a shocking tale with clarity and without judgment, this riveting autobiography embodies one woman’s unwavering mission to resolve her own past.

Rawhide Down: The Near Assassination of Ronald Reagan ISBN: 080509346X | 2011 | EPUB | 320 pages | 973 KB For the first time, a minute-by-minute account of the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan On March 30, 1981, President Reagan walked out of a hotel in Washington, D.C., and was shot by a would-be assassin. For years, few people knew the truth about how close the president came to dying, and no one has ever written a detailed narrative of that harrowing day. Now, drawing on exclusive new interviews, Del Quentin Wilber tells the electrifying story of a moment when the nation faced a terrifying crisis. With cinematic clarity, we see the Secret Service agent whose fast reflexes saved the president's life; the brilliant surgeons who operated on Reagan as he was losing half his blood; and the small group of White House officials frantically trying to determine whether the country was under attack. Most especially, we encounter the man codenamed Rawhide, a leader of uncommon grace who inspired affection and awe in everyone who worked with him. Ronald Reagan was the only serving U.S. president to survive being shot in an assassination attempt. In Rawhide Down, the story of that perilous day—a day of chaos, crisis, prayer, heroism, and hope—is brought to life as never before.

The Great Derangement: A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics, and Religion ISBN: 038552062X | 2009 | EPUB/MOBI | 336 pages | 1 MB
A REVELATORY AND DARKLY COMIC ADVENTURE THROUGH A NATION ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN—FROM THE HALLS OF CONGRESS TO THE BASES OF BAGHDAD TO THE APOCALYPTIC CHURCHES OF THE HEARTLAND Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi set out to describe the nature of George Bush’s America in the post-9/11 era and ended up vomiting demons in an evangelical church in Texas, riding the streets of Baghdad in an American convoy to nowhere, searching for phantom fighter jets in Congress, and falling into the rabbit hole of the 9/11 Truth Movement. Matt discovered in his travels across the country that the resilient blue state/red state narrative of American politics had become irrelevant. A large and growing chunk of the American population was so turned off—or radicalized—by electoral chicanery, a spineless news media, and the increasingly blatant lies from our leaders (“they hate us for our freedom”) that they abandoned the political mainstream altogether. They joined what he calls The Great Derangement. Taibbi tells the story of this new American madness by inserting himself into four defining American subcultures: The Military, where he finds himself mired in the grotesque black comedy of the American occupation of Iraq; The System, where he follows the money-slicked path of legislation in Congress; The Resistance, where he doubles as chief public antagonist and undercover member of the passionately bonkers 9/11 Truth Movement; and The Church, where he infiltrates a politically influential apocalyptic mega-ministry in Texas and enters the lives of its desperate congregants. Together these four interwoven adventures paint a portrait of a nation dangerously out of touch with reality and desperately searching for answers in all the wrong places. Funny, smart, and a little bit heartbreaking, The Great Derangement is an audaciously reported, sobering, and illuminating portrait of America at the end of the Bush era.
Kingpin: How One Hacker Took Over the Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground ISBN: 0307588688 | 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 288 pages | 3 MB Former hacker Kevin Poulsen has, over the past decade, built a reputation as one of the top investigative reporters on the cybercrime beat. In Kingpin, he pours his unmatched access and expertise into book form for the first time, delivering a gripping cat-and-mouse narrative—and an unprecedented view into the twenty-first century’s signature form of organized crime. The word spread through the hacking underground like some unstoppable new virus: Someone—some brilliant, audacious crook—had just staged a hostile takeover of an online criminal network that siphoned billions of dollars from the US economy. The FBI rushed to launch an ambitious undercover operation aimed at tracking down this new kingpin; other agencies around the world deployed dozens of moles and double agents. Together, the cybercops lured numerous unsuspecting hackers into their clutches. . . . Yet at every turn, their main quarry displayed an uncanny ability to sniff out their snitches and see through their plots. The culprit they sought was the most unlikely of criminals: a brilliant programmer with a hippie ethic and a supervillain’s double identity. As prominent “white-hat” hacker Max “Vision” Butler, he was a celebrity throughout the programming world, even serving as a consultant to the FBI. But as the black-hat “Iceman,” he found in the world of data theft an irresistible opportunity to test his outsized abilities. He infiltrated thousands of computers around the country, sucking down millions of credit card numbers at will. He effortlessly hacked his fellow hackers, stealing their
ill-gotten gains from under their noses. Together with a smooth-talking con artist, he ran a massive real-world crime ring. And for years, he did it all with seeming impunity, even as countless rivals ran afoul of police. Yet as he watched the fraudsters around him squabble, their ranks riddled with infiltrators, their methods inefficient, he began to see in their dysfunction the ultimate challenge: He would stage his coup and fix what was broken, run things as they should be run—even if it meant painting a bull’s-eye on his forehead. Through the story of this criminal’s remarkable rise, and of law enforcement’s quest to track him down, Kingpin lays bare the workings of a silent crime wave still affecting millions of Americans. In these pages, we are ushered into vast online-fraud supermarkets stocked with credit card numbers, counterfeit checks, hacked bank accounts, dead drops, and fake passports. We learn the workings of the numerous hacks—browser exploits, phishing attacks, Trojan horses, and much more—these fraudsters use to ply their trade, and trace the complex routes by which they turn stolen data into millions of dollars. And thanks to Poulsen’s remarkable access to both cops and criminals, we step inside the quiet, desperate arms race that law enforcement continues to fight with these scammers today. Ultimately, Kingpin is a journey into an underworld of startling scope and power, one in which ordinary American teenagers work hand in hand with murderous Russian mobsters and where a simple Wi-Fi connection can unleash a torrent of gold worth millions.
Pimp: The Story of My Life ISBN: 1451617135 | 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 320 pages | 1 MB As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. Only he could tell this story and make the reader feel it. If you thought Hustle & Flow was the true pimp story, this book is where it all began. This is the heyday of the pimp, the hard-won pride and glory, small though it may be; the beginnings of pimp before it was dragged in front of the camera, before pimp juice and pimp style. A trip through hell by one man who lived to tell the tale. The dangers of jail, addiction and death that are still all too familiar for today’s black community. Though it is a tale of his times, it will remain current and true for as long as there is a race bias, as long as there is a street life, as long as there is exploitation.
How the End Begins: The Road to a Nuclear World War III ISBN: 1416594213 | 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 320 pages | 2 MB The president loses control of fifty nukes for nearly an hour. Russian nuclear bombers almost bump wingtips with American fighter jets over the Pacific coast. North Korea detonates nuclear weapons underground. Iran’s nuclear shroud is penetrated by a computer worm. Al-Qaeda goes on the hunt for Pakistan’s bomb, and Israelis debate the merit of a preemptive nuclear strike. Treaties are signed, but thousands of nuclear weapons are still on hair-trigger alert. This is how the end begins. In this startling new book, bestselling author Ron Rosenbaum gives us a wake-up call about this new age of peril and delivers a provocative analysis of how close—and how often—the world has come to nuclear annihilation and why we are once again on the brink.Rosenbaum tracks down key characters in our new nuclear drama and probes deeply into their war game strategies, fears, and moral agonies. He travels to Omaha’s underground nuclear command center, goes deep into the missile silo complexes beneath the Great Plains, and holds in his hands a set of nuclear launch keys.Along the way, Rosenbaum confronts the missile men as well as the general at the very top of our nation’s nuclear command system with tough questions about the terrifying assumptions underlying it. He reveals disturbing flaws in our nuclear launch control system, suggests remedies for them, shows how the old Cold War system of bipolar deterrence has become dangerously unstable, and examines the new movement for nuclear abolition.Having explored the depths of Hitler’s evil and the intense emotion of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Rosenbaum now has produced a powerful, urgently needed work that challenges us: Can we undream our nightmare?
Panther Baby: A Life of Rebellion and Reinvention English | 2012 | ISBN: 1616201290 | 280 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
In the 1960s he exhorted students at Columbia University to burn their college to the ground. Today he’s chair of their School of the Arts film division. Jamal Joseph’s personal odyssey—from the streets of Harlem to Riker’s Island and Leavenworth to the halls of Columbia—is as gripping as it is inspiring. Eddie Joseph was a high school honor student, slated to graduate early and begin college. But this was the late 1960s in Bronx’s black ghetto, and fifteen-year-old Eddie was introduced to the tenets of the Black Panther Party, which was just gaining a national foothold. By sixteen, his devotion to the cause landed him in prison on the infamous Rikers Island—charged with conspiracy as one of the Panther 21 in one of the most emblematic criminal cases of the sixties. When exonerated, Eddie—now called Jamal—became the youngest spokesperson and leader of the Panthers’ New York chapter. He joined the “revolutionary underground,” later landing back in prison. Sentenced to more than twelve years in Leavenworth, he earned three degrees there and found a new calling. He is now chair of Columbia University’s School of the Arts film division—the very school he exhorted students to burn down during one of his most famous speeches as a Panther. In raw, powerful prose, Jamal Joseph helps us understand what it meant to be a soldier inside the militant Black Panther movement. He recounts a harrowing, sometimes deadly imprisonment as he charts his path to manhood in a book filled with equal parts rage, despair, and hope.

Fludd (Audiobook) English | 2011 | ISBN: 1407474979 | 6 hr., 45 min. | MP3 | 137 MB From the double Man Booker prize-winning author of 'Wolf Hall', this is a dark fable of lost faith and awakening love amidst the moors. Fetherhoughton is a drab, dreary town somewhere in a magical, half-real 1950s north England, a preserve of ignorance and superstition protected against the advance of reason by its impenetrable moor-fogs. Father Angwin, the town's cynical priest, has lost his faith, and wants nothing more than to be left alone. Sister Philomena strains against the monotony of convent life and the pettiness of her fellow nuns. The rest of the town goes about their lives in a haze, a never-ending procession of grim, grey days stretching ahead of them. Yet all of that is about to change. A strange visitor appears one stormy night, bringing with him the hint, the taste of something entirely new, something unknown. But who is Fludd? An angel come to shake the Fetherhoughtonians from their stupor, to reawaken Father Angwin's faith, to show Philomena the nature of love? Or is he the devil himself, a shadowy wanderer of the darkest places in the human heart? Full of dry wit, compassionate characterisations and cutting insight, Fludd is a brilliant gem of a book, and one of Hilary Mantel's most original works. Read by Gordon Griffin.

Astronauts For Hire: The Emergence of a Commercial Astronaut Corps English | ISBN: 146140519X | 2012 | PDF | 268 pages | 243 MB 'Astronauts For Hire' is a comprehensive and authoritative study of the increasing need for commercial astronauts. Erik Seedhouse provides unique insights into the burgeoning new field of commercial space operation and the individuals who will run these missions. Section I begins by describing how Astronauts for Hire (A4H) was created in 2010 by Brian Shiro, a highly qualified NASA astronaut candidate, and a group of other astronaut candidates. Erik introduces A4H's vision for opening the space frontier to commercial astronauts and describes the tantalizing science opportunities offered when suborbital and orbital trips become routine. Section II describes the vehicles astronauts will use. Anticipation is on the rise for the new crop of commercial suborbital and orbital spaceships that will serve the scientific and educational market. These reusable rocket-propelled vehicles are expected to offer quick, routine, and affordable access to the edge of space, along with the capability to carry research and educational crew members. The quick turnaround of these vehicles is central to realizing the profit-making potential of repeated sojourns by astronauts to suborbital and orbital heights. Section III describes the various types of missions this new corps of astronauts will fly and who will hire them. For example, suborbital flights may be used to do high altitude astronomy, life science experiments, and microgravity physics. This section continues with an examination of the types of missions that will accelerate human expansion outward, to Exploration Class missions through lunar bases, the establishment of interplanetary spaceports, and outposts on the surface of Mars. Along the way it describes the tasks commercial astronauts will perform, ranging from mining asteroids to harvesting helium.

Bear Grylls is a man who has always sought the ultimate in adventure. Growing up on the Isle of Wight, he was taught by his father to sail and climb at an early age. As a teenager he found identity and purpose through both mountaineering and martial arts, which led the young adventurer to the foothills of the mighty Himalaya and a grandmaster's karate training camp in Japan. On returning home, he embarked upon the notoriously gruelling selection course for the British Special Forces to join 21 SAS - a journey that was to push him to the very limits of physical and mental endurance. Then, in a horrific free-fall parachuting accident, Bear broke his back in three places. It was touch and go whether he would ever walk again. However, only eighteen months later Bear became one of the youngest ever climbers to scale Everest, aged only 23. But this was just the beginning of his many extraordinary adventures . . .Known and admired by millions, Bear Grylls has survived where few would dare to go. Now, for the first time, Bear tells the story of his action-packed life. Gripping, moving and wildly exhilarating, Mud, Sweat and Tears is a must-read for adrenalin junkies and armchair adventurers alike. Narrated by Tom Patrick Stephens, who Bear approved himself (since he was off adventuring!)
The Intimate Lives of the Founding Fathers (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2010 | 17 hours and 43 mins | ISBN: 1441756566 | MP3 56 kbps (vbr) | 427 MB With his usual storytelling flair and unparalleled research, Tom Fleming offers a compelling, intimate look at the founders--George Washington, Ben Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison--and the women who played essential roles in their lives. From hot-tempered Mary Ball Washington to promiscuous Rachel Lavien Hamilton, the founding fathers' mothers powerfully shaped their sons' visions of domestic life. But lovers and wives played more critical roles as friends and often partners in fame. We learn of the youthful Washington's tortured love for the coquettish Sarah Fairfax, wife of his close friend; of Franklin's two ''wives,'' one in London and one in Philadelphia; of Adams's long absences, which required a lonely, deeply unhappy Abigail to keep home and family together for years on end; of Hamilton's adulterous betrayal of his wife and their reconciliation; and how the brilliant Madison was jilted by a flirtatious fifteen-year-old and went on to marry the effervescent Dolley, who helped make this shy man into a popular president. Jefferson's controversial relationship to Sally Hemings is also examined, with a different vision of where his heart lay. Fleming nimbly takes us through a great deal of early American history, as the founding fathers strove to reconcile their private and public lives, often beset by a media every bit as gossip-seeking and inflammatory as ours today. He offers a powerful look at the challenges women faced in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. While often brilliant and articulate, the wives of the founding fathers all struggled with the distractions and dangers of frequent childbearing and searing anxiety about infant mortality. All the more remarkable, then, that these women loomed so large in the lives of their husbands--and, in some cases, their country.
