Crave the Darkness: A Shaede Assassin Novel Amanda Bonilla delivers a fairly big shocker in the story. And despite all of the emotional turmoil, she keeps the story moving fast with plenty of action. The ending... wasn't what I wanted and there is much left... dangling. But Bonilla promises this won't be the end of the Shaede Assassin world, so I will try to remain calm.
Wonder Boys Wonder Boys, by Michael Chabon is an amazing roller coaster tale of a Professor Grady Tripp weekend. The novel is both entertaining and exhilarating yet still retains that Chabon charm that The Mysteries of Pittsburgh left me with. Chabon has a real knack for writing, he creates characters who are both quirky yet somewhat identifiable. Take Grady, a forty something, chronic head, college professor, and one time wonder boy... I felt myself feeling the man's pain.
Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat Not a Sour Puss There is so much misinformation about cats that it's a welcome treat to have a book that gives us insight into things that are important to them. Cats love security. They love a familiar setting. They like a routine, but they can become bored if we don't play with them regularly. The author has fine suggestions on effective play. She also has excellent thoughts on how cats try to communicate with us. It took me a long time to figure out what my cat was trying to tell me, but you can get it nicely from this book.
The Trilisk Supersedure
I have to remind myself this is a fictional construct yet the author paints such realistic potentials and reactions it became totally embedded in this reader's consciousness. The detailed descriptions of motivational reality surrounded by a narrative of mind blowing discoveries is addictive. This is an opera that should never end.
The Trilisk Ruins There are arguments for keeping artifacts of alien technology safe from people who might be harmed by what they don't understand, but probably the greatest motivation would be vast sums of money for uncovering new technologies. Of course, the large corporations want to maintain their control over this process so they're counting on a system that works in their favor. Naturally this system has developed into a police-state for the United Nations.

The Trilisk AI The alien, Shiny, seeks to obtain a valuable object left in his house, on his decimated home planet. But the planet is patrolled by enemy ships and drones, set up specifically to kill Shiny's species wherever found. Henceforth, Shiny decides to solicit the aid of the human smugglers Telisa Realchik and Magnus Garrison of Parker Interstellar Travels to go down to the planet and retrieve the object.
The Last Weekend The Last Weekend is a deftly crafted page-turner, where little can be taken for granted and nothing is quite as it seems. It offers a dark, haunting tale of friendship, sexual passion and jealousy and confirms Blake Morrison’s reputation as one of Britain’s most talented writers.
The Last Werewolf The story is told in a self confessional diary format written by the world's last known werewolf Jacob Marlowe. Marlowe is resigned to his fate and plans to lay down his life for the team of international hunters that have expunged the rest of his brethren. He's lived his life and every day must face the emotional consequences of his actions. It's simply time. But Marlowe is not in full control of his destiny and, even as he readies for death, finds that the course to this final solution may still be impeded by unexpected obstacles. With brutal crimes enacted against his friends, a covert operation within the hunter ranks, an alternative plot arranged by other supernatural entities, and a last ditch chance at fulfillment and happiness "The Last Werewolf" establishes and maintains a relentless pace. But through it all, Duncan never loses sight that this is a character piece of life or death significance.
The Last Train to Scarborough
One night, in a private boarding house in Scarborough, a railwayman vanishes, leaving his belongings behind...It is the eve of the Great War, and Jim Stringer, railway detective, is uneasy about his next assignment. It's not so much the prospect Scarborough in the gloomy off-season that bothers him, or even the fact that the last railwayman to stay in the house has disappeared without trace. It's more that his governer, Chief Inspector Saul Weatherhill, seems to be deliberately holding back details of the case - and that he's been sent to Scarborough with a trigger-happy assistant. And when Jim encounters the seductive and beautiful Amanda Rickerby a whole new personal danger enters Jim's life...
The Last Town on Earth I was amazed to find out this was Mullen's first novel. His writing style could be described as quietly brilliant, the kind of style that, when it's done perfectly, calls no attention to itself, and allows you to just slip seamlessly into the world he has created. Like getting into a really comfy bed with silk sheets, it's just a wonderful experience.

The Last Rain The novel is both fascinating and moving. Dori's mother keeps a diary in which the challenges of feeding a newborn who lives in a communal Children's House are shown to be to some degree insurmountable forced to distance herself from her daughter, the mother begins to refer to her baby as "the girl." A diary kept by a young man on one of the first kibbutzim, in the 1920s, is a revelation. Most prominent, however, is the collective diary of the kibbutz founders, who in stunningly lyrical prose, and with surprising honesty, describe their exuberance as well as their guilt about usurping the inhabitants of what was, until a few months before their arrival, an Arab town.
The Last Prophecy I won't say this is perfect writing, but it's plenty good enough to merit a strong four stars. My biggest "problem" with Land is that he is only writing books featuring Barnea and Kamal I miss his older novels with Blaine McCracken, which were even more delightfully outlandish with their James Bond-like world conquest plots. But in the absence of McCracken, this series still fits the bill for what Land does best: entertain from beginning to end.
The Last Nazi Stan Pottinger's book kept me turning pages, kept me guessing, kept me up at night, and kept me desperately hoping that what happens in the book can not and will not happen in real life. What makes it so good is that is yes, this book has a stunning plot that twists and turns, and yes, it has a stunning female heroine and a stunning fiend at the helm, but more importantly: All too often suspense or thrillers have only one premise - good vs evil THE LAST NAZI has that too, of course but it has more. This threat is not just to society at large but is played out on a very personal scale with the main characters so that you - the reader - feel it and respond to it in a far more immediate way. Nothing about this book is a disappointment. And everything about it sheer excitement from the very first page to the last.
The Book Waitress She's not the average small town librarian. This "Book Waitress" will grab your attention from the start and will not let go. I could not put this book down! It will have you rooting for Camille and Derek from the moment they meet. If you're looking for a great read with a strong story line and characters that you will instantly fall in love with, this one is for you!
Rough Justice (A Dan Shepherd Mystery) Spider Shepherd is an undercover cop working for the Serious and Organised Crime agency in London. He is sent in to expose who is behind these beatings. While undercover Spider Shepherd has his own very serious situation to deal with at home in Hereford. There his Family are threatened by a nasty piece of work that is wanted for rape and murder back home in his own country. This takes him into a similar situation that he is trying to expose back in London. This is when he has to deal out his own sort of Rough Justice. This book is well put together with a plot that moves along at pace that excites and makes you want to keep turning the pages. This is not a book to read before you go to sleep as you will have a stupidly late night and won't be able to stop reading. I found this out to my cost and had a very drowsy day at work the next day. I would recommend this book to anyone along with any other book by this author.

Rolling Thunder Wonderful retro-invocation of Heinlein's juvenile novels, with the protagonist even named for one (see Podkayne of Mars), and with a great tour of the Solar System thrown in. Especially fun for RAH fans: count how many RAH titles are in the final chapter. Hell, on the last page.
Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Dominion Once again, please remember to read this without comparing it to Ludlum, that is almost critical...because without doing so makes the enjoyment seriously fall pretty flat. Lets face it, I haven't read any book which could paint the picture of spies during the Cold War quite like Robert Ludlum could in his heyday at least not in MY opinion. Either way, if you enjoyed the previous continuation of Jason Bourne via Van Lustbader, you'll probably like this one, too...however, if you didn't, I don't really see how you'd like this one...
Roil Overall I really enjoyed this book. The author builds an incredibly interesting world. There is a lot of action, some adventure, and some politics. I loved the idea of the Roil and the mystery that surrounds it. The characters weren't the strong point of the story, but they were well done and provided a good vehicle for the plot. Some of the characters and creatures presented are extremely mysterious and I am eager to learn more about them. I was disappointed with how
abruptly the story ended. So readers just beware that this is part of a series and nothing is really resolved in this first book. Fans of epic fantasy, or complicated dark fantasy adventures should enjoy this book. I would encourage steampunk fans to check it out too (although no romance here, so probably not a book for those who like romance in their steampunk). It is an incredibly creative and a very engaging read I will definitely be checking out future books in this series.
Old Souls Alyssa Reynolds is an up and coming graphic designer at Young and Rubicam. For Alyssa, the story begins uneventfully but with a strange sense of foreboding. She has to deliver a presentation at a meeting that will be attended by one of the company's owners Mark Young. Sitting next to her longtime mentor and best friend, Colin, Alyssa attempts to still her racing nerves. However, she senses the foreboding and feels that her life is about to change. Then the vibrations start. Alyssa's body is positively alive with a strong vibration that she has only felt in a series of recurring dreams. The vibration grows stronger and then Alyssa comes face to face with its source, Mark Young. From that one meeting, Alyssa's life begins to change...never to be the same again.
How to Breathe Underwater This is the best book I've read all year. In sharp, gorgeous language, Julie Orringer has written nine knockout stories that moved me deeply. I read one of the stories, "When She is Old and I am Famous," in the Paris Review two years ago, and I loved it so much that I kept Julie's name on a post-it note by my desk. I came across a few of the other stories in various places afterward, and loved them just as much as the first. The collection does not disappoint. Every story is beatifully crafted and compelling. Some are funny, some are sad, but they are all filled with great characters and dialogue, and they all work beautifully. I have recommended the book to all of my friends, and I anxiously await whatever else Ms. Orringer writes in the future.

Holy Smoke: A Jerusalem Mystery In 29 C. E. Jerusalem, a severely burned body is found behind the Temple's most sacred inner sanctum the veil of The Holy of Holies a place no one is allowed to venture except for the Jews' Chief Rabbi and he only on the Day of Atonement. When news of the corpse floods the city, many irate Jew believe heavenly fire burned the intruder for heresy while political and religious leaders like High Priest Caiaphas, raging over messiah-like Rabbi Yeshua of Galilee rallying the masses, insist on learning how this infidel gained access to the Holy of Holies.
Hocus Never let it be said that a good mystery book can not have a fulfilling and captivating romance at its core because HOCUS will prove them wrong. Irene Kelly has an argument with her husband, policeman Frank Harriman, thinking they will make up when they return from work. Only problem with that scenario is Frank never comes home. It soon becomes evident that he has been taken hostage by unknown people for inexplicable reasons. While Irene worries, something totally out of character for her, she receives a phone call from the kidnappers who have the injured officer in their custody.
Graveminder I can not say how much I loved this book. I have never read a book about zombies and you can bet that I will venture into this new world more often. Marr creates such a vivid and frightening world that I was on the edge of my seat the
entire time. The book can be gruesome but come on they are zombies gore is expected. I was completely shocked by the ending as well. Fans of Marr will love this new turn that she has taken from fae to zombies and I for one hope that she writes more about Claysville.
Grave Sight Harper is assisted and protected by her stepbrother Tolliver. The relationship between these two is complex, to say the least, and it will be wonderful to watch them develop in coming volumes. Harris writes skillfully yet playfully, and develops her characters in a strong, appealing fashion. All of the groundwork for a fantastic series is beautifully established here in Grave Sight.
Grail It is a complex story with many aspects and participants and I am in awe how tight Elizabeth still succeeds in keeping it, this could easily have swelled to a kilo pages. I enjoyed the different points of view and the characters are distinct and well developed. Perceval is in many respects the main character everything revolves around, she is also by far the most human in all her Exalted transhumanism. Danilaw is the other character that stands out rightminded as he is he plays old tunes on his guitar and are used to manage the planet by nudging or tweaking. I like the characters here, they don't bicker as much as I like but it is not that kind of story.

Flight Ten years later, the plane is found and the case reopened with Detective Frank Harriman in charge. He does a paradigm shift assuming Lefebvre is innocent. His efforts bring him to the attention of someone who prefers the cop dead than having the law enforcement official learn the truth of what happened over a decade ago. There have been seven previous books in this series starring Irene Kelly, but this one is different as she plays a minor role and Frank tells the narrative. FLIGHT takes some adjustments for those familiar with Jan Burke's works, but once the reader adapts, the novel gracefully soars. The tale is loaded with suspense, red herrings, and false leads that turn this who-done-it into a powerful reading experience while Ms. Burke deserves kudos for successfully trying something different.
Goodnight, Irene Great mystery! Picked it up secondhand, but am now rushing to buy all the rest. Lots of intrigue, and for once I didn't guess "whodunit" halfway through. Like Cornwell and Hillerman, Jan Burke has constructed a believable main protagonist with a well-rounded background she's not just a puppet in service to the case at hand. Lots of intrigue, but not as hard-edged, as say, Cornwell's books. I'm looking forward to following her through other mysteries. If you're a fan of the genre, I'll bet you'll get hooked on Irene too!
Dreamland Being ordered to take time off again, Riley doesn't know what to do or where to go. She heard of a place where she can visit her sister, Ever, in her dreams and wanted to give it a try and sort out her problems with her sister's help.
Found a nice old man that had been to Dreamland and would take her along. It follows Riley learning the process of how to dream jump and all the people and items involved. Riley has to learn more things about herself before she can progress in the Here and Now. She doesn't understand why she can't be 13 and wants to succeed and win everything in order to please the Council to jump ahead. This was a great read and recommend to all who love Alyson Noel's previous books.
Dream Dark Wounded during a climactic battle, Link discovers that tending his injuries won't be as simple as visiting a doctor and that healing his arm should be the least of his worries. For being bitten by a Supernatural does more than break the skin it changes a person, inside and out, turning Link into someone more and more like the dark creature who injured him.
Dragons & Dwarves: Novels of the Cleveland Portal I liked this book better because the writing felt . . . smoother. It was easier to read and the case itself flowed more naturally out of Kline's real job as a reporter on politics. Another reason I liked both this book and the previous one was become S. Andrew Swann is adept at giving you more and more information about the story without actually giving the real point/plot away. He sets all the cards on the table for Kline (and essentially us) and yet they still don't quite make sense until he reveals what's REALLY going on at the end. And then it makes perfect sense and you wonder why you didn't see it earlier. I also liked how this story got more personal for Kline. In the first book, it was just him against everything else. In this one, it gets personal, threatening his family, so in the end he's not doing this to save himself or to get the story for the paper. This personal stake in the outcome makes the book much more tense and dramatic.

Disturbance: An Irene Kelly Novel Sacramento reporter Aaron Mikelson calls his friend and former peer at the Las Piernas News Express Irene Kelly with the news that her worst nightmare serial killer Nick Parrish (see Bones) is walking after recovering from a spinal cord trauma. She is upset as it took her loving husband and a shrink to help her heal after her confrontation with Parrish and his original Moth groupie, both locked away in maximum security prisons. Kelly tries to warn her friend forensic anthropologist Ben Sheridan who lost part of a leg to Parrish. Ben and his roommate Ethan Shire arrive with their dogs.
Bones Irene Kelly, newspaper reporter, is invited on a search for the mountain grave of a woman killed by convicted sadist Nick Parrish. Surprising and unexpected events leads Kelly down a road of psychological torment and self doubt. She experiences survivor guilt and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress as she attempts to heal herself and avoid being found by Parrish and victimized in a more brutal and tortuous way. The story actually had two seperate climaxes both of which were realistic.
Also Known As (AKA) I absolutely loved Maggie. She was such a great character. Spunky and refreshing. She wasn't overly dramatic and full of teenage angst (okay maybe there was a little bit but it was so funny you actually enjoyed reading about it!). She was tough and headstrong and smart and still sometimes completely clueless about how to be a teenager.
A Cast of Shadows Daraja has grown up watching her brothers journey down the river on the traditional Deinopidae rite of passage. Each returned with riches from their travels, and lovers with whom to share their lives.

When the Queen of Vankara falls ill from one of the plagues, she calls upon the talents of Sarah Harker. As a shifter, Sarah is physically able to transform into another person but only if she is touching them at the moment of their death, gaining not only their physical form but also some of their memories. Queen Emma Vankar entrust Sarah with the responsibility of protecting the people of Vankara from the ever growing greed of those in parliament and from the ambitious hands of Aleksander Chromis, dictator of the Chromis Empire and ardent suitor for the queen’s hand in marriage.

Vintage Ladybug Farm
VINTAGE LADYBUG FARM is a true winner. It is the continuing tale of three middle-aged women who leave their lives in the city and move to a farm in Virginia. Four years have passed since the women gave up their old lives and now that they are pretty much settled in their new lives (well almost settled, they still have a leaky roof), they are looking for new adventure.
The Whispers of Nemesis It is winter in the mountains of northern Greece and as the snow falls in the tiny village of Vrisi a coffin is unearthed and broken open. But to the astonishment of the mourners at the graveside, the remains inside the coffin have been transformed, and as news of the bizarre discovery spreads through the village like forest fire it sets tongues wagging and heads shaking.
Transplanting Holly Oakwood Holly Oakwood’s cosy life is shattered when her boyfriend has an affair with her best friend. Determined to mend her broken heart by throwing herself into her career, but unable to hide her contempt for her new boss, she loses her job as well. She lands a dream job in a Consulate in LA, but that’s when her troubles really begin. She struggles to settle, loneliness begins to bite, and everyone around her is thin and shallow. She loses her confidence, makes a fool of herself once too often, and her new boss hates her. Can she salvage anything from the train wreck of her new life, or should she return to England?
Those We Love Most Maura is first and foremost a mother who loves her children unconditionally! Maura is also a woman in a marriage that seems to have derailed and sadly she loses focus on what is important. One very tragic accident brings Mauras life and the lives of her family to a screeching halt. The aftermath of the tragedy exposes the weakness of not only Maura, but her husband, mom and dad. Woodruff gets across eloquently that there is nothing like tragedy to make you see the important things in life....most importantly those that you love.
The Runaway King: Book 2 of the Ascendance Trilogy It's almost frightening how well Amazon knows me by now. I picked up The False Prince, the first book in this series, after an email recommendation from Amazon and I was so glad that I did. The Runaway King picks up shortly after the first ends, with Jaron reclaiming the throne to Carthya. Of course, nothing can go the way it should for our poor king and he is soon forced to make decisions that ultimately end up with him getting punched, cut and basically just beaten up in all sorts of ways. The plotting in this series is really just phenomenal. Everything is so well thought out that every encounter, friendship and foe happens for a reason. Even when I'm screaming to myself that there is no way that this can possibly work out, it does and it does so beautifully.

The Oath of the Vayuputras: Shiva Trilogy 3 Not as great as the earlier two books but still a delightful read! A good end to one of the most well written trilogies from an Indian author...
The Judas Sheep: A DI Charlie Priest Mystery Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. The author's writing is gritty and to the point added to which he has a likeable sense of humour that he usually incorporates into his books, all of which I have found enjoyable.
The Hidden Goddess After reading 'The Native Star' , the first book in this series, I couldn't wait to read 'The Hidden Goddess'. Emily Edwards is such an interesting, compelling female character. The story continues her relationship with the priggish, secretive Dreadnot Stanton after having gotten engaged at the end of the last novel. A good portion of the novel is devoted to the story of Emily's parentage and how she ended up with 'Pap' who had raised her since she was a little girl and more of the mysterious Sini Mira organization is explained. I don't want to give away much more of this wonderful book because part of it's pleasure is how the story unfolds and characters' motivations and secrets are
revealed. The story wraps up without a cliffhanger which makes me think that this is the end for Emily and Dreadnot, I hope not but what a great book if it truly is the end.
The Heart Of Devin Mackade I loved this story of Devin MacKade, town sheriff, and Cassie Dolin, a woman he's loved for twelve years and who was married to a man that physically and emotionally abused her. Devin is a patient and thoughtful man who fell in love with Cassie's children and helped them heal from their experience living in an abusive environment. Cassie's transformation was realistic and Devin's limitations on his patience was understandable but long overdue. His sensitivity endeared him to me and has him be a standout from his brothers. The climax of the story was exciting and the final scene was a definite tear jerker. This is my favorite of the MacKade Brothers series.

Great Food, All Day Long: Cook Splendidly, Eat Smart 2010 | ISBN: 1400068444 | 176 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Now in her 80s, writer Angelou, a food lover who has struggled with weight and health concerns, learned the value of portion control. In this cookbook, she recommends eating great food (no calorie counting) in small portions all day long. Her recipes come from childhood and from her travels and include reworked concoctions influenced and inspired by other cookbooks she loves. Angelou breaks the rules of what to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with recipes for meals to eat any time of the day. The emphasis is on food so flavorful that whenever it is eaten, it is savored and so satisfying that small portions are enough. Among the recipes for creamy pork hash, chicken tetrazzini, Swedish hash, and oxtail stew are recollections from her life and commentary on acquired tastes and eating beyond physical fullness. In addition to the meat dishes are sections for vegetarians and recipes for soups and desserts. Gorgeous illustrations and extended commentary add to the appeal of this book.

The Redgraves: A Family Epic
ISBN: 0307720144 | 2012 | EPUB | 384 pages | 3 MB The dramatic, poignant and revealing saga of the Redgraves, one of history's greatest families of actors. For more than a century, the Redgraves have defined theater and film while captivating the public eye. Their history is a rich tapestry of singularly talented individuals whose influence is felt to this day, yet their story has never before been told. In The Redgraves, bestselling biographer Donald Spoto draws on his close personal relationships with the family and includes both his interviews and unprecedented personal access to them. The result is a groundbreaking account of this extraordinary clan and their circle, including such luminaries as Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Sir Laurence Olivier. The story began in 1907 with the marriage of actress Daisy Scudamore to matinee idol Roy Redgrave and the birth in 1908 of their son, Michael, who became a famous stage actor and movie star. Michael’s family and wild social circle knew that for decades he was insistently bisexual, notwithstanding his marriage to Rachel Kempson, one of England’s most glamorous and admired actresses. Their daughter Vanessa, a great and revered performer, is the only British actress ever to win Oscar, Emmy, Tony, Cannes, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards—achievements that have been paralleled by a profound humanitarian commitment even as she tackled difficult and controversial roles. Vanessa’s sister, Lynn Redgrave, led a triumphant and complex life in her own way, too. From her performance in the movie Georgy Girl to her prizewinning play about her father and her Oscar-nominated performance in Gods and Monsters, Lynn established herself as a very different Redgrave. Corin Redgrave, their brother, was known for his acclaimed performances onstage and screen—and he was a tireless and outspoken political radical. The family tradition of distinction continues with the careers of Joely Richardson and Jemma Redgrave and reached a high point in the life and career of Vanessa’s daughter, Natasha Richardson, who earned a Tony Award for her role as Sally Bowles in the revival of Cabaret. Natasha’s sudden death after a skiing lesson in 2009 shocked and saddened admirers of her work and graceful spirit. The product of more than thirty years of research, The Redgraves recounts the epic saga of a family that has extended the possibilities for actors on stage, screen, and television in Britain, America, and around the world.
Jack the Ripper and the Case for Scotland Yard's Prime Suspect ISBN: 0470938994 | 2011 | MOBI | 368 pages | 14 MB An investigation into the man Scotland Yard thought (but couldn't prove) was Jack the Ripper Dozens of theories have attempted to resolve the mystery of the identity of Jack the Ripper, the world's most famous serial killer. Ripperologist Robert House contends that we may have known the answer all along. The head of Scotland Yard's Criminal Investigation Department at the time of the murders thought Aaron Kozminski was guilty, but he lacked the legal proof to convict him. By exploring Kozminski's life, House builds a strong circumstantial case
against him, showing not only that he had means, motive, and opportunity, but also that he fit the general profile of a serial killer as defined by the FBI today. The first book to explore the life of Aaron Kozminski, one of Scotland Yard's top suspects in the quest to identify Jack the Ripper Combines historical research and contemporary criminal profiling techniques to solve one of the most vexing criminal mysteries of all time Draws on a decade of research by the author, including trips to Poland and England to uncover Kozminski's past and details of the case Includes a Foreword by Roy Hazelwood, a former FBI profiler and pioneer of profiling sexual predators Features dozens of photographs and illustrations Building a thorough and convincing case that completes the work begun by Scotland Yard more than a century ago, this book is essential reading for anyone who wants to know who really committed Jack the Ripper's heinous and unforgettable crimes.
Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream ISBN: 0805076069 | 2005 | EPUB | 256 pages | 194 KB The bestselling author of Nickel and Dimed goes back undercover to do for America’s ailing middle class what she did for the working poor Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed explored the lives of low-wage workers. Now, in Bait and Switch, she enters another hidden realm of the economy: the shadowy world of the white-collar unemployed. Armed with a plausible resume of a professional “in transition,” she attempts to land a middle-class job—undergoing career coaching and personality testing, then trawling a series of EST-like boot camps, job fairs, networking events, and evangelical jobsearch ministries. She gets an image makeover, works to project a winning attitude, yet is proselytized, scammed, lectured, and—again and again—rejected. Bait and Switch highlights the people who’ve done everything right—gotten college degrees, developed marketable skills, and built up impressive resumes—yet have become repeatedly vulnerable to financial disaster, and not simply due to the vagaries of the business cycle. Today’s ultra-lean corporations take pride in shedding their “surplus” employees—plunging them, for months or years at a stretch, into the twilight zone of white-collar unemployment, where job searching becomes a full-time job in itself. As Ehrenreich discovers, there are few social supports for these newly disposable workers—and little security even for those who have jobs. Like the now classic Nickel and Dimed, Bait and Switch is alternately hilarious and tragic, a searing expose of economic cruelty where we least expect it.
Everything Is Broken: A Tale of Catastrophe in Burma ISBN: 1594202575 | 2010 | EPUB | 288 pages | 534 KB A deeply reported account of life inside Burma in the months following the disastrous Cyclone Nargis and an analysis of the brutal totalitarian regime that clings to power in the devastated nation. On May 2, 2008, an enormous tropical cyclone made landfall in Burma, wreaking untold havoc and leaving an official toll of 138,300 dead and missing. In the days that followed, the sheer scale of the disaster became apparent as information began to seep out from the hard-hit delta area. But the Burmese regime, in an unfathomable decision of near-genocidal proportions, provided little relief to its suffering population and blocked international aid from entering the country. Hundreds of thousands of Burmese citizens lacked food, drinking water, and basic shelter, but the xenophobic generals who rule the country refused emergency help. Emma Larkin, who has been traveling to and secretly reporting on Burma for years, managed to arrange for a tourist visa in those frenzied days and arrived hoping to help. It was impossible for anyone to gauge just how much devastation the cyclone had left in its wake; by all accounts, including the regime's, it was a catastrophe of epic proportions. In Everything Is Broken, Emma Larkin chronicles the chaotic days and months that followed the storm, revealing the secretive politics of Burma's military dictatorship and the bizarre combination of vicious military force, religion, and mysticism that defined its unthinkable response to this horrific event. The Burmese regime hid the full extent of the storm's devastation from the rest of the world, but the terrible consequences for Burma and its citizens continue to play out months after the headlines have faded from newspapers around the world. In Everything Is Broken, Larkin-whose deep knowledge of the Burmese people has afforded her unprecedented access and a rare understanding of life under Burmese oppression-provides a singular portrait of the regime responsible for compounding the tragedy and examines the historical, religious, and superstitious setting that created Burma's tenacious and brutal dictatorship. Writing under an assumed name, Larkin delivers the heretofore untold story of a disaster that stunned the world, unveiling as she does so the motivations of the impenetrable generals who govern this troubled nation.

The Intelligent Gardener: Growing Nutrient Dense Food ISBN: 0865717184, ASIN: B00AAL61HK | 2012 | EPUB | 336 pages | 4 MB Vegetables, fruits, and grains are a major source of vital nutrients, but centuries of intensive agriculture have depleted our soils to historic lows. As a result, the broccoli you consume today may have less than half of the vitamins and minerals that the equivalent serving would have contained a hundred years ago. This is a matter for serious concern,
since poor nutrition has been linked to myriad health problems including cancer, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. For optimum health we must increase the nutrient density of our foods to the levels enjoyed by previous generations. To grow produce of the highest nutritional quality the essential minerals lacking in our soil must be replaced, but this re-mineralization calls for far more attention to detail than the simple addition of composted manure or NPK fertilizers. The Intelligent Gardener demystifies the process while simultaneously debunking much of the false and misleading information perpetuated by both the conventional and organic agricultural movements. In doing so, it conclusively establishes the link between healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy people. This practical step-by-step guide and the accompanying customizable web-based spreadsheets go beyond organic and are essential tools for any serious gardener who cares about the quality of the produce they grow. Steve Solomon is the author of several landmark gardening books including Gardening When it Counts and Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades. The founder of the Territorial Seed Company, he has been growing most of his family's food for over thirty-five years.]

Another Insane Devotion: On the Love of Cats and Persons English | ISBN: 0738215260 | 2012 | PDF | 304 pages | 2.1 MB From “a genuine American Dostoevsky” (The Washington Post): a dazzling, funny, bittersweet exploration of the mysteries of relationship, both human and animal.
When his favorite cat Biscuit goes missing, Peter Trachtenberg sets out to find her. The journey takes him 700 miles and many years into his past-- into the history of his relationships with cats and the history of his relationship with his wife F., who may herself be on the verge of disappearing. What ensues is a work that recalls travel narratives from The Incredible Journey to W. G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn. Trachtenberg ponders the mysteries of feline intelligence (why do cats score worse on some tests than pigeons?), the origins of their domestication, their terrible treatment during the Middle Ages. He also looks at the riddle of why any of us loves whom we love and all the unforeseen places to which that devotion leads us.

Playful Parenting 2002 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0345442865 | PDF | 15 MB
Tag, you're it! In Playful Parenting, Lawrence Cohen demonstrates that parents need to lighten up and spend a few hours giggling with their kids. Play is inherently educational for children, he claims, and parents can learn plenty by examining the games kids play--from peekaboo to practical jokes. Cohen is quick to point out that no matter what your child's temperament, she has a playful side. In its most basic form, play is a way to communicate. The author examines, with plenty of hilarious personal anecdotes, the details of play at every age and across genders. From his daughter and a new male friend discussing how "cool" nuclear weapons are and how "gross" a love song is, to a younger child zooming full-speed around a park at a birthday party, we're shown the exuberant truth behind playing: not only is it just plain fun, it can spark a variety of important sensations. One short section discusses the common phenomenon of happy giggling turning instantly to tears. Cohen suggests that "the fun play opens the emotional door to let out the giggles, and a flood of other feelings come pouring out after." Some specific ideas for games are included, and you'll find recommendations for everything from play wrestling to gentle storytelling. One chapter focuses on how to cope with play you don't find enjoyable, and how learning to appreciate these games can lead to surprising emotional insights. This is where Cohen's years of practice come in handy--it may be true that we all play, but not everyone immediately grasps the underlying messages. This is not simply a book filled with family activities, but rather an exploration of play for all ages.
Killing the Poormaster: A Saga of Poverty, Corruption, and Murder in the Great Depression 2012 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 1613744188 | PDF | 10 MB On February 25, 1938, in the early days of the welfare system, the reviled poormaster Harry Barck—wielding power over who would receive public aid—died from a paper spike thrust into his heart. Barck was murdered, the prosecution would assert, by an unemployed mason named Joe Scutellaro. In denying Scutellaro money, Barck had suggested the man’s wife prostitute herself on the streets rather than ask the city of Hoboken, New Jersey, for aid. The men scuffled. Scutellaro insisted that Barck fell on his spike; the police claimed he grabbed the spike and stabbed Barck. News of the poormaster’s death brought national attention to the plight of ten million unemployed living in desperate circumstances. A team led by celebrated attorney Samuel Leibowitz of “Scottsboro Boys” fame worked to save Scutellaro from the electric chair, arguing that the jobless man’s struggle with the poormaster was a symbol of larger social ills. The trial became an indictment “of a system which expects a man to live, in this great democracy, under such shameful circumstances.” We live in a time where the issues examined in Killing the Poormaster—massive unemployment, endemic poverty, and the inadequacy of public assistance—remain vital. With its insight into our social contract, Killing the Poormaster reads like today’s news

The New Low-Maintenance Garden: How to Have a Beautiful, Productive Garden and the Time to Enjoy It ISBN: 1604691662 | 2009 | EPUB | 284 pages | 35 MB Do you ever lament that you’d love to be able to garden more, but just don’t have the time? The demanding pace of modern life leaves little space for the pleasures of gardening. On the other hand, gardening itself could be the culprit: elaborate, traditional perennial borders; water-hungry or disease-prone plants; needy lawns; and high-maintenance plants that require staking or clipping all suck up precious hours.
Simply put, we need to start gardening in a whole new way. In this inspiring book, Val Easton shows exactly how to have a low-maintenance garden that doesn't sacrifice style. You won't have to give up your favorite plants or settle for expanses of ugly bark nuggets. You just have to unlearn some bad old habits and pick up some good new ones. So, how do you go about making a "new" low-maintenance garden? First, design your garden with maintenance in mind—good-looking hardscape will both save weeding time and showcase your favorite plants. Second, simplify your garden routines—learn the most efficient planting and maintenance techniques and don't get stressed if everything isn't letter-perfect. Third, learn how to work with nature rather than against it. And finally, embrace home-grown fruits, herbs, and vegetables; well planted containers; and thoughtfully chosen plants. The New Low-Maintenance Garden doesn't just tell you how to garden in a whole new way—it shows you, through profiles and beautiful photographs of real gardens that embody low-maintenance techniques. The pressures of life are not likely to ease up anytime soon, but the lessons of this timely book will help you banish guilt over undone garden chores and revel in your garden successes.

From simple actions like composting household waste, installing a water barrel, or eliminating pesticides to more long-term investments like choosing permeable, locally sourced paving, and planting the most water-wise plants, there are hundreds of large and small choices home gardeners can make to reduce the environmental impact of designing, planting, and tending a garden. High-Impact, Low-Carbon Gardening goes beyond organics and compost and gives serious gardeners all the information they need to make their garden truly green.

More often than not, we have no idea what is causing the problem, or how to fix it. Fortunately, help is at hand. What's Wrong With My Plant? (And How Do I Fix It?) provides an easy system for visually diagnosing any problem, and matching it to the right cure. This innovative and easy-to-use guide is split into three parts. Part One presents easy-to-follow, illustrated flow charts — organized by where on the plant the symptoms appear — that allow readers to accurately diagnose the problem. The format is so simple it doesn't even require knowing the name of the plant; all you need to know is whether the problem is affecting its roots, stem, flowers, or leaves. It does not matter whether the plant is a houseplant, perennial, vegetable, tree, or shrub. Part Two offers a 100% organic way to fix the problem. From improper growing conditions and environmental factors, to molds, pests, and diseases, every problem has a safe, natural solution. Part Three shows photographs and drawings of stressed, damaged, and diseased plants that help with accurate comparison. Whether your garden consists of herbs on a kitchen windowsill, a vegetable garden, an elaborate backyard border, or a container on a patio, What's Wrong With My Plant? is an indispensable resource. If you can see it, you can fix it. Curing a sick plant just doesn't get any easier.
