Red Station (A Harry Tate Thriller)
To avoid embarassment, they ship Harry off to Red Station, a snowed-in remote outpost in Georgia(near South Ossetia), & a dumping ground for agents the department no longer wants in plain sight. Unfortunately for MI5, Harry Tate is not the kind of agent that takes this treatment lying down. He's pissed off, & determined to right the wrong done to him & redeem himself, no matter whom he takes down in the process. And all at a time when Russian Forces are advancing on Georgia, and Red Station just happens to be right in their path. But the Russians are not all Harry has to worry about.
Sea Glass Winter: A Shelter Bay Novel This is the latest entry to a series of contemporary romances set in Shelter Bay. The locale is gorgeous, the town is filled with hot former military guys who have had their stories told in previous books, and the main characters in this book are good solid decent people with great chemistry. What's not to love. JoAnn Ross is an excellent writer whose descriptive turn of phrase leads you to vividly picture the people and places and events in the book. There is a small amount of conflict in this book, no huge drama or torment just a nice romance.
Siren: A Novel of Suspense All of the books in this series are a really good read. Tara Moss is a clever writer who unravels her tales with superb craftmanship. This book, like the others featuring PI Makedde Van De Val are an alluring combination of crime, suspense, eroticism and exciting travel destinations. What more could you ask for in terms of pure escapism?
Split The sequel to "Fetish," "Split" was a decent story, although it didn't dazzle me the way the debut story did. Makedde is back in Vacouver, BC and a year has passed since the tramautic events in Australia - she is trying to put them behind her, but she continues to have nightmares, and is suffering from insomnia. Being a student of forensic psychology and with plans to work with law enforcement officers with help them with PTSD, among other things, does she seek professional help herself?
Summer of the Gypsy Moths Convinced that her free floating mother will return to her someday soon, Stella lives with her Great-aunt Louise and Louise's foster kid Angel. The situation is tenable if not entirely comfortable. If Stella is neat to the point of fault then Angel's her 180-degree opposite. They're like oil and water, those two. That's why when Louise ups and dies on the girls they're surprised to find themselves reluctant allies in a kind of crazy scheme. Neither one of them wants to get caught up in the foster care system so maybe that's why they end up burying Louise in the backyard, running her summer cottages like nothing's wrong. They can't keep it up forever, but in the process of working together the two find themselves growing closer, coming to understand where they're both coming from.

Summer with My Sister This book is a perfect summer holiday read: a sweet story of family values leaving you with a satisfied smile on your face. The storyline might seem a bit simple and sometimes predictable but there are a few heart wrenching hidden secrets to keep you interested. I really enjoyed the way your opinion of Polly changes as the story progresses and I found myself really routing for her and a happy ending despite her being such a cow in the beginning!
The Essence 'The Essence' is the second book in the young adult dystopian/fantasy Pledge series. It continues to follow our heroine Charlie, who has now taken over as the new queen of Ludania and is attempting to make things right in her country. Along with making formal appearances to her people, Charlie must attend a summit with all the queens of nearby countries to barter for resources and trade. But there are secrets that Charlie is hiding - most importantly that Queen Sabara's Essence still resides inside of her and is gaining strength daily. On top of everything else, Charlie's life is put in serious danger as they discover a traitor is amongst them and is intent on assassinating the new queen.
The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Ring In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he
sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.
The Friday Society The Friday Society is the story of 3 very different young women who become friends, defy conventions, battle evil, and have a darn good time, as does the reader. I really enjoyed the characters smart, funny, ambitious and opinionated girls making there way in a steampunk universe. Each has her own area of expertise, her own cultural background, and her own obstacles to overcome. The fact that they learn that together as a group they can support each other and pool their knowledge is a major strength of the novel.
The Haunting Season Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah's moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Jess, who talks to ghosts, quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects. One is a girl possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who really knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess's heart rate...when he's not resurrecting the dead.

The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
The Labyrinth of Drowning Two years have passed since top cop Paul Harrigan walked away from the New South Wales Police Force to be his own man. Since then his life has been a gift, and his home with his partner Agent Grace Riordan and their daughter a sanctuary.
The Last Days of Dogtown I truly loved this book, as it was a throwback to so many novels of old. Today authors feel they have to go on for 500+ pages and at the end you have no true feelings for the characters of the book. But, in a mere 260 pages Diamant has provided us with many, many characters who are basically set forth in their own chapter of the book and you feel the need to keep constantly turning pages to see how the affairs of Dogtown turned out.
The Living After a global catastrophe called the Great Reduction, the number of people living on Earth has become fixed, remaining a constant three billion. The concept of death no longer exists. Instead people are reborn anywhere on the planet with an in-code that keeps track of information about all their previous incarnations. Humankind is no longer made up of individuals - people are only particles making up one composite organism called The Living.
The Lone Drow "Lone Drow," is one of the best Drizzt books I have read, fill with action, drama, and twists and turns all weaving around one other. the characters are some much fun to read about and it's not a hard read either. The writing style and the flow of the book is very smooth and there is not one dull moment. If you want a book about Dwarves, Drow, Orcs, and many other races, a book filled with action, drama, and unforgettable characters, a book with an awesome storyline, "The Lone Drow, " is for you. But you have to read all the other Drizzt books first....you must, for they are great! All Hail Drizzt Do'Urden and R.A. Salvatore!

The Marriage Bargain The Marriage Bargain is for anyone who loves a good love story. A real fairytale romance with totally engaging and likeable characters. Camille has problems. Her honesty propels her to refuse a job she feels is dishonest. Her refusal gets her fired. Julian needs a wife for only six months to get his father off his back about marrying, something Julian doesn't want.
The Merchant of Dreams The Merchant of Dreams starts out with a scene that could have come from one of the best thriller movies - all haunting atmosphere and trepidation - and digs its hooks in deep. Set a year or two after the events of The Alchemist of Souls, this second book in the Night's Masque series is a worthy successor to it. At over 500 pages, I still managed to finish the book roughly three days after I started it.
The Night Listener I was so excited to hear the Armistad Maupin was coming out with another book. After reading and hearing about it, I decided to pick up a 3-part gally of his book at a bookstore I work for. Seriously, this only took me one sitting. The story surrounds a NPR radio host, Grabriel Noone, who was going through writer's block. In addition to his difficulty in writing, his boyfriend left him. After reading a gally written by a 12-year-old boy, who is a fan of Gabriel's funny and
lyrical radio show, Gabriel contacts the ill-fated boy, named Pete, and becomes friends with him. As their friendship progresses, Gabriel starts telling Pete his problems and hardships in his life. Pete listens and gives advice to Gabriel, which helps him. BUT, the question is: DOES this boy exist? Is Pete an actual person? With many people doubting Pete's extistence, Gabriel goes out to find pete, and prove he exists. This is a FANTASTIC piece of work from Armistad Maupin. Gabriel goes through a journey of life, in dealing with his ex-boyfriend, his family (particuarly his father), and himself. THE NIGHT LISTENER is a triumph, with a climax that will make you think and wonder for days. This is one book you will have a hard time putting down, let alone wishing it never ended.
The Prodigal Spy Having read Kanon's previous novel "Los Almos" and hating it, I don't know what possessed me to start reading the "Prodigal Spy". All I can say is that I am very glad that I pick up this book, because reading it was one of the most enjoyable reading experienced I've had.
The Red Knight This is an epic fantasy story that isn't quite like your usual epic fantasy. There are no fluffy elves, no poetry and certainly no faffing around. There is some fruity language that somehow manages to help convey the horrors of war without going too far. It isn't all doom and gloom though, there are loves and lusts and plenty of humourous parts too. I wouldn't say this book is an emotional roller-coaster but there is certainly enough emotion to make sure you are empathetic to the characters.

The Return of the King: Being theThird Part of the Lord of the Rings The Return of the King is the final part of The Lord of the Rings. In this last part the feeling of good versus evil reaches its pinnacle in LOTR. Tolkien gave incredible detail describing the War of the Ring, as it spanned several chapters. All of the characters are developed further, and for most of the TROTK, the story remains a two way split.
The Thousand Orcs (Forgotten Realms: The Hunter's Blades Trilogy, Book 1) His battle scenes are vivid, but not so weighty as to take away from the story. The characters are realistic and intrigueing, and the "action" in any given part of one of Salvatore's books might be a battle, political subterfuge, a character's emotional conflicts in short, Salvatore isn't limited to skillful portrayel of battle. He can, and does, include a variety of gripping situations in his works. The Thousand Orcs is no exception, boasting all three of those things and more. If you're a Salvatore fan, I shouldn't need to tell you to buy this, because you've probably already got it on your wish list. If you aren't, this book is as good a place as any to get started!
The Trouble with Being Wicked
Celeste Gray is ready for a fresh start after eighteen years of being a courtesan. She is the most desired woman in London but she is ready to be done and settle down in the quiet country with her friend and find some peace. When she meets the dashing viscount next door, she is stunned by the first true stirrings of attraction that she has felt. But Ashlin Lancester is as proper as they come and she knows that if he were to learn the truth of her background he would never spare her another glance. Ash has been the guardian to his two younger sisters for the past seven years, determined to shield them from the scandal that rocked his family when his determined to have pleasure, no matter the cost, father ends up dying in a most shocking way
The Two Swords This novel ends with essentially the introduction to the next novel or trilogy in the series. I did find that irritating. While I don't mind authors setting up future novels or trilogies in their current trilogy, it seemed a bit odd to not conclude this trilogy within the trilogy. There may not be a conclusion to this trilogy in the next few novels either because Salvatore has already introduced new plot lines that promise to shape the next novel or two. All this being said, I still enjoyed the book. There are plenty of detailed and expertly woven fight scenes. Salvatore seems to be the master of dark elves and dwarves and has created a very identifiable species stereotype for each. Salvatore's characters are classics, if not a bit invincible. If the reader had a dime it appeared one of the five major characters received a fatal blow, then nobody would have to buy his books. Still, they are familiar, unique, and occassionally imitated but never really duplciated. Fans of the Drizzt series will enjoy this book, but the one they'll really be looking forward to will be coming a bit farther down the line.
The Two Towers: Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings Frodo and his Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in a battle in the Mines of Moria. And Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape, the rest of the company was attacked by Orcs. Now they continue the journey alone down the great River Anduin alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.

Tiger by the Tail A new addition to the Paladin of Shadows military adventure series by multiple New York Times best seller John Ringo and Ryan Sears. Sequel to Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, Unto the Breach and A Deeper Blue. After saving America from Middle Eastern terrorists, even Mike Harmon and the Keldara could use a vacation. Of course, the Kildar’s idea of a vacation includes taking down pirates in the Singapore Straits. But when he finds computer chips designed to run nuclear reactors in the pirate booty, Harmon has a new mission thrust upon him– discover how bottom-feeding thieves got their hands on top-secret technology.
Too Bright to Hear Too Loud to See During these shock treatments, the reader experiences the intimacies of his marriage to Ellen, his surrender to his well-hidden bipolar disorder when he leaves his family, and destruction of his own father who, most likely, was bipolar. Garey puts us inside of Greyson's mind. I experienced his anguish, his disregard for all that could be sacred to him. As he unravels, his pain is overwhelming and the core of his madness is palpable.
Tracers (A Harry Tate Thriller) Spies spying on spies. Harry Tate, last seen escaping a Georgian death plot hatched by MI5 agents supposedly on his side (Red Station, 2010, etc.), returns to Blimey and takes up work as an independent contractor tracking the missing. Jennings, a tight-lipped lawyer who may have secret-service connections, pays him to find an Israeli professor, Samuel Silverman, gone to ground. That task hits several roadblocks, including the assassinations of Matqu, a Libyan, and Param, an embezzler and duped philanderer. Even worse, Tate and his pal Ferris, an electronics whiz, pick up two tails, Dog and Carlisle, neither of whom wishes them well. An ill-hidden clue leads to a woman who knows Silverman, knows his real identity and nationality, and indeed was placed in his entourage in Baghdad as a mole for security purposes a plan that failed when he apparently died in a bombing of his compound.
Triple Threat In "Fast", Kathryn Dance races against the clock to track down the members of a domestic terrorist cell with the lives of 200 people hanging in the balance. In "Game," a housekeeper looks for her murdered employer's missing body-and uncovers a shocking truth that hits too close to home. In "Paradice", a car brake failure leaves John Pellam stranded in a remote Colorado mountain town, where he suddenly finds himself accused of murder.
Watergate
I found this an extraordinary book - maybe a tad long, but I'm not smart enough to identify what's not needed - and one where you rarely, if ever, feel the presence of the author. Not an easy task when you think about it. The only caveat I have is the amount of Watergate knowledge one brings to this book. Mallon drops the reader right into the deep end of the pool with his novel, and even with a fair bit of Watergate lore in my head I had to refer to Wikipedia several times. Still well worth the read and one folks will be talking about for some time to come.

Wonders of the Invisible World These are fun short stories. I prefer full length because there is more to get your teeth into, but P.M. is always a joy to read and her stories always make you think. Or dream.
Afterimage I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read. I found this book difficult to put down, it was like reading a long poem. Not only was the plot intriguing and the characters interesting, but the syle and language employed by the author was nothing less than beautiful. She is able to evoke complex images with a minimum of words.
A Low Down Dirty Shane Shane Hewitt never knew what he was getting into with Siobhan O'Malley but this quote says it all "What's the worst that could happen". the answer is monsters trying to kill him, a druid gang also wanting his skin and let us not forget the little druid girl who is rocking his world. This was too good to have been so short, I read it in 1 sitting and hated to see it end.
Birth of the Kingdom Arn de Gotha has become one of the most feared warriors of the Knights Templar fighting to liberate Palestine with the Crusaders. At the great battle for Jerusalem, a mammoth and bloody struggle where the Christians were finally defeated, Arn is saved from certain death by Saladin, his longtime enemy and trusted friend. Ravaged by wounds and sickness, Arn is at last granted his wish: to return at last to his homeland, it plagued by endless wars.Arn is determined to find her - the woman for whom he was exiled. He must discover if their love could endure so long a separation, and if it can sustain his new quest: the create a new people, a new society, both Christian and Muslim, both craftsmen and warriors, with Arn at its helm, fighting for peace in a savage land.A fitting conclusion to a great trilogy, a bestseller all over Europe, and now the basis for a major film.
Blood of Dawn
This latest serial killer definitely falls into the realm of bizarre and creepy when teenage girls are murdered with a vampire-like bite in their necks. And though Sloan is only an intern with the bureau, she's asked to go undercover and enroll in high school to investigate the teens' deaths. There is no shortage of suspects either.

Bookmarked to Die (Miss Zukas Mysteries) This ninth installment in the series begins on Helma's birthday, and the normally fastidious and staid woman is flustered and off her mark. (If you remember the ending of "Miss Zukas Shelves the Evidence," you shouldn't be surprised.) Is she or is she not in an exclusive relationship with Wayne? Is Ruth just visiting or moving back to Bellehaven, Washington? Does her boss, May Apple Moon, really expect Helma to attend a week's worth of counseling sessions? Where is Boy Cat Zukas hiding? And what's the deal with that new too-perky library employee, Glory Shandy? Helma's personal and professional lives get ever more confusing as two women meet with "accidental" deaths, and both were connected to the library's new Local Authors project, Helma's baby. Of course, she cannot sit idly by while the local police force ignores key clues in what must have been murder. Helma and Ruth become a team again and pursue and interview possible suspects until they eventually uncover the facts. And the culprit.
Briarpatch Pratt gets very dark on us and I half wonder if he was going through a depression during the writing. The story was beautifully told explores what is typically known as the "Otherworld," but this isn't just some dimension with frolicking fairies filled with golden apples. No, Pratt's Otherworld is a mysterious, dark, and ever changing place filled with lost beings and some scary-ass monsters.
Catalogue of Death: A Miss Zukas Mystery Hooray, a new Miss Zukas! Helma's at it again, with more reason than usual for plying her investigative skills, since the deaths involved are related to the new library building site. Watching the careful back and forth of the relations between Helma and the chief and Helma and Boy Cat Zukas is fun, even if I sometimes want both to progress faster. I can't blame Helma for wanting to keep Wayne on his toes a bit, though, and you just can't hurry a cat.
Covet Eighteen months after her ordeal at the hands of the sadistic 'Stiletto Murderer', fashion model and forensic psychology student Makedde Vanderwall must confront her demons when she returns to Sydney for the trial. But just as the verdict is handed down, the unthinkable happens - the homicidal maniac escapes and Makedde is his target once again.
Cursed
This is one of my favorite books I've read in quite a while. First off, I was simply captivated by the cover. I think the colors are perfect and the artistry conveys the gothic feel that is prevalent throughout the entire story. This "Beauty and the Beast" themed novel flows smoothly like a well-told campfire tale. The main characters are robustly portrayed. Mason, the tortured, tormented landlord who slowly thaws his frozen emotions under the quiet, soothing ministrations of lonely Sarah is definitely my favorite. He is a good man who has suffered unjustly for an exceedingly long time yet still retains kindness in his heart and poetry in his soul, even though his body is like an unwelcome, unyielding anchor to that honorable spirit.

Day After Night The year is 1945. European Jews are evacuating their former homelands and heading for the British Mandate of Palestine by foot, by leaky boats, by any way they can find. The British stand at the borders, ready to turn them back. Not to be denied, the "illegal" immigrants find ways around the blockaded roads or have to be rescued from floundering boats. For those caught or rescued, the Atlit detention camp becomes their new home.
Deception (Harry Tate) The explosive new Harry Tate thriller Former MI5 officer Harry Tate’s skill at tracking down runaways is second to none and the Security Services need his help. When MI6 ask him to trace Vanessa Tan, a lieutenant with the Royal Logistics Corps who failed to report for her return flight to Afghanistan, Harry instinctively feels it’s a mission to avoid...
Dr. Frankenstein's Daughters Seventeen year old twins Ingrid and Giselle find out that they are the daughters of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and they've inherited his castle on a Scottish island. They waste no time in moving in. Giselle is beautiful and popular and is eager to become the new Baroness Frankenstein, throw lavish parties, and entertain the high society of Europe. Ingrid is plainer, the smart sister, who cares more about scientific study, and eagerly begins reading their father's journals.
Far Horizons "Far Horizons" by Kate Hewitt is a romantic historic fictional book based on some true events and ancestors of the author. The author cleverly embellishes upon the stories to create a book that will keep you on edge from the beginning to the end. Can true love wait for two years and with an ocean between them? Kate Hewitt uses a great writing style to keep multiple plot lines moving forward, but yet keeps you in suspense the whole book.
Fetish The romance is okay, though you see what's going to happen from a mile away. The killer is a bit formulaic - he would have been good in the early 90s, but today we are far more gripped by the ones that play with our heads. We get in his head some, certainly, but not to a degree that leaves goosebumps on the flesh.

Gun Machine This book begins with a naked man with a shotgun. I think you can tell from that if this is a book for you. If you are a fan of Ellis-penned comics and graphic novels, you WILL enjoy this book too. It is all murder and guns-as-fetishobjects and totally insane people and foul-mouthed cops and filthy human beings and EXACTLY what I didn't know I wanted.
Hens Reunited Katie, Georgia and Alice were at each other's hen nights but now the chickens have come home to roost: their marriages have fallen apart and their friendships have been tested to the limits. Control-freak Katie has become a commitment-phobe there's no way she wants to get married again. Is there?
Hit This is the fourth book in the series of crime novels centered on protagonist Makedde Vanderwall. Unlike many other crime novels, this was not burdened with unnecessary exposition, but rather created suspense and setting in an intelligent manner. This meant the pacing was spot on and had you involved at every moment. It also had enough detail and references that made this tale not only believable but you thought you could see the real life references.
Index to Murder: A Miss Zukas Mystery (Miss Zukas Mysteries) Dereske draws one into the story carefully, including past details and cues. I had hoped that Helma's personality would have developed a little more fullness. Earlier books gave a promise of more rounded Helma. I even hoped for a smile or a witty remark. But, this time Helma seems a little drier than usual. Maybe she is destined to be stuck in time. All that aside, it is an enjoyable mystery with a set of favorite characters and a lovely setting.
Ink In this first-rate horror thriller, we follow the downward spiral of Jason's life as he meets the mysterious Sailor and gets a tattoo that is not content remaining a mere skin illustration.

Observatory Mansions I think this is where a lot of the other reviewers have a complaint with this novel. I have yet to see a critique of the authors prose, which is reminiscent of Saramago's "All the Names", and I have seen no argument with his characterizations, which are superb. Rather, I think readers are disturbed because this book is about the power of the human spirit, and its ability to mend itself. Not all of the characters ride off into the sunset, but they don't all wither and die either. It is in this range of outcomes that Carey most effectively considers his core subject.
Over You Josie, Nell and Lisa are meeting up for the first time in years. The Beacon This novella had a quiet, mysterious and gothic feeling and it was certainly an easy read. However, by the end of the book I thought it was too much of a light touch and wasn't enough for a short book - instead it felt like a longer book with the intensity taken out. Maybe Hill wanted the bleakness to come through with the lack of things explained too? There are some thought provoking elements but for me there was not enough substance and the messages or themes that the author was trying to convey were not clear. The relationships between the characters are not described deeply enough and the ending feels too open to me. The ending was somewhat rushed and I'm sure the story could have gone on much further and in more detail.

On another beach a more sinister plot unfolds as a gang of boys plan the most wicked deed.

The Edge of the World This first book in Anderson's Terra Incognita series introduces two nations with competing religions beginning an extended conflict after each blames the other for the destruction of their joint holy city. While the religions are clearly fictional, one of the two nations bears a passing resemblance to medieval Europe while the other more closely resembles Arabic/Muslim cultures - though despite this resemblance neither culture are really portrayed as "good guys" or "bad guys". In fact the leaders of both nations are decent people forced to enter a war against their wishes due to pressure from their people, and both sides in the war commit atrocities. The story is told from the perspective of several characters, including the leaders of the two nations, as well as a sailor, his wife (who is captured by the other side early on), and an insane fanatic priest. I don't think Anderson is really a great writer, but he is a good storyteller. He does a good job of keeping the story moving at a good pace, and provides characters on both sides of the conflict that the reader can relate to. He also does a good job of portraying how religious fanaticism leads to a series of atrocities that magnify the conflict.

Steroid Nation: Juiced Home Run Totals, Anti-aging Miracles, and a Hercules in Every High School: The Secret History of America's True Drug Addiction Published: 2007-10-23 | ISBN: 1933060379 | PDF | 368 pages | 10 MB When science lets us fulfill our greatest desires, where do we stop? Should Barry Bonds’s startling achievements be listed in the record book with an asterisk because he has been accused of using steroids? Did performanceenhancing drugs play a role in Lance Armstrong’s seven Tour de France victories? And what does Arnold Schwarzenegger’s continued success say about the appeal of his steroid-fueled bodybuilding persona? In the tradition of And the Band Played On, award-winning journalist Shaun Assael looks at America’s complicated love affair with steroids and how it has grown into the country’s—and perhaps the world’s—most insidious drug addiction. Steroid Nation presents a chilling portrait of a nation enamored of artificially pumped-up success. Chronicling steroid use far beyond the headlines, it begins with the bodybuilders of Venice Beach in the 1970s and continues through to the NFL’s Raiders of the ’80s and ’90s and the baseball scandals of today. Assael also reveals the dramatic story of the godfather of the steroid movement: Dan Duchaine, who wrote The Original Underground Steroid Handbook in 1981. Part detective story, part medical investigation, and part sociological examination, Steroid Nation is a groundbreaking work on the most compelling story in the sports world today.

Douglas Kenyon In Forbidden History writer and editor J. Douglas Kenyon has chosen 42 essays that have appeared in the bimonthly journal Atlantis Rising to provide readers with an overview of the core positions of key thinkers in the field of ancient mysteries and alternative history. The 17 contributors include among others, Rand Flem-Ath, Frank Joseph, Christopher Dunn, and Will Hart, all of whom challenge the scientific establishment to reexamine its underlying premises in understanding ancient civilizations and open up to the possibility of meaningful debate around alternative theories of humanity's true past. Each of the essays builds upon the work of the other contributors. Kenyon has carefully crafted his vision and selected writings in six areas: Darwinism Under Fire, Earth Changes--Sudden or Gradual, Civilization's Greater Antiquity, Ancestors from Space, Ancient High Tech, and The Search for Lost Origins. He explores the most current ideas in the Atlantis debate, the origins of the Pyramids, and many other controversial themes. The book serves as an excellent introduction to hitherto suppressed and alternative accounts of history as contributors raise questions about the origins of civilization and humanity, catastrophism, and ancient technology. The collection also includes several articles that introduce, compare, contrast, and complement the theories of other notable authors in these fields, such as Zecharia Sitchin, Paul LaViolette, John Michell, and John Anthony West.

London Under: The Secret History Beneath the Streets English | 2011-11-01 | ISBN: 0385531508 | 240 pages | EPUB | 16,19 mb London Under is a wonderful, atmospheric, imaginative, oozing short study of everything that goes on under London, from original springs and streams and Roman amphitheaters to Victorian sewers, gang hideouts, and modern tube stations. The depths below are hot, warmer than the surface, and this book tunnels down through the geological layers, meeting the creatures, real and fictional, that dwell in darkness—rats and eels, monsters and ghosts. When the Underground’s Metropolitan Line was opened in 1864, the guards asked for permission to grow beards to protect themselves against the sulfurous fumes, and named their engines after tyrants—Czar, Kaiser, Mogul—and even Pluto, god of the underworld. To go under London is to penetrate history, to enter a hidden world. As Ackroyd puts it, “The vastness of the space, a second earth, elicits sensations of wonder and of terror. It partakes of myth and dream in equal measure.”

Honeybee Democracy English | 2010-09-20 | ISBN: 0691147213 | 280 pages | EPUB | 6.95 mb Honeybees make decisions collectively and democratically. Every year, faced with the life-or-death problem of choosing and traveling to a new home, honeybees stake everything on a process that includes collective fact-finding, vigorous debate, and consensus building. In fact, as world-renowned animal behaviorist Thomas Seeley reveals, these incredible insects have much to teach us when it comes to collective wisdom and effective decision making. A remarkable and richly illustrated account of scientific discovery, Honeybee Democracy brings together, for the first time, decades of Seeley's pioneering research to tell the amazing story of house hunting and democratic debate among the honeybees. In the late spring and early summer, as a bee colony becomes overcrowded, a third of the hive stays behind and rears a new queen, while a swarm of thousands departs with the old queen to produce a daughter colony. Seeley describes how these bees evaluate potential nest sites, advertise their discoveries to one another, engage in open deliberation, choose a final site, and navigate together as a swirling cloud of bees to their new home. Seeley investigates how evolution has honed the decision-making methods of honeybees over millions of years, and he considers similarities between the ways that bee swarms and primate brains process information. He concludes that what works well for bees can also work well for people: any decision-making group should consist of individuals with shared interests and mutual respect, a leader's influence should be minimized, debate should be relied upon, diverse solutions should be sought, and the majority should be counted on for a dependable resolution.
An impressive exploration of animal behavior, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individuals in them.

McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container: Create Container Gardens of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Edible Flowers ISBN: 0761116230 | 2002 | EPUB | 400 pages | 7 MB With few exceptions-such as corn and pumpkins-everything edible that's grown in a traditional garden can be raised in a container. And with only one exception-watering-container gardening is a whole lot easier. Beginning with the downto-earth basics of soil, sun and water, fertilizer, seeds and propagation, The Bountiful Container is an extraordinarily complete, plant-by-plant guide. Written by two seasoned container gardeners and writers, The Bountiful Container covers Vegetables-not just tomatoes (17 varieties) and peppers (19 varieties), butharicots verts, fava beans, Thumbelina carrots, Chioggia beets, and sugarsnap peas. Herbs, from basil to thyme, and including bay leaves, fennel, and saffron crocus. Edible Flowers, such as begonias, calendula, pansies, violets, and roses. And perhaps most surprising, Fruits, including apples, peaches, Meyer lemons, blueberries, currants, and figs-yes, even in the colder parts of the country. (Another benefit of container gardening: You can bring the less hardy perennials in over the winter.) There are theme gardens (an Italian cook's garden, a Four Seasons garden), lists of sources, and dozens of sidebars on everything from how to be a human honeybee to seeds that are All America Selections.

They have traced his steps all over the world (the United States, Australia, Iceland, the UK, Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden) gathering exclusive information and interviews on his past life, his trouble with the law, but also on WikiLeaks: how it works and the controversy surrounding it. In the process, ValAŠrie and Sophie reveal the questionable motivations of the two Swedish women and the inconsistencies in their accusations. Julian Assange - Wikileaks: Warrior for Truth is the defense that Julian Assange himself could not have written.

Black Ops: The Rise of Special Forces in the CIA, the SAS, and Mossad ISBN: 1605980978 | 2010 | EPUB | 496 pages | 405 KB A hard-hitting history of special-forces operations over the past fifty years in the United States, United Kingdom, and Israel. After eight challenging years in Afghanistan, the new U.S. strategy, aimed at winning hearts and minds rather than search-and-destroy, refocuses the conflict on Special Forces: unorthodox soldiers who work outside of traditional military forces to combine secret military operations with nation building. Tony Geraghty, an expert author in this field for almost thirty years, unveils the extraordinary evolution of this refined style of war-making from its roots in antiguerrilla warfare in Ireland and Palestine, by way of the creation of the C.I.A., the S.A.S., the Green Berets, and America Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S.), and many others. Israel's Special Forces, including Mossad, are an organic part of the same coherent history, and their story is narrated here for the first time. This history is more than a tale of derring-do, although James Bond-like characters stalk every page. it is a sweeping examination of Black Ops at a time when they represent the future of an open-ended global war against terrorism.

The Obamians: The Struggle Inside the White House to Redefine American Power ISBN: 0670023760 | 2012 | EPUB | 416 pages | 1 MB The definitive analysis of the events, ideas, personalities, and conflicts that have defined Obama’s foreign policy When Barack Obama took office, he brought with him a new group of foreign policy advisers intent on carving out a new global role for America in the wake of the Bush administration’s war in Iraq. Now the acclaimed author of Rise of the Vulcans offers a definitive, even-handed account of the messier realities they’ve faced in implementing their policies. In The Obamians, acclaimed author James Mann tells the compelling story of the administration’s struggle to enact a coherent and effective set of policies in a time of global turmoil. At the heart of this struggle are the generational conflicts between the Democratic establishment—including Robert Gates, Hillary Clinton, and Joseph Biden—and Obama and his inner circle of largely unknown, remarkably youthful advisers, who came of age after the Cold War had ended. Written by a proven master at elucidating political underpinnings even to the politicians themselves, The Obamians is a pivotal reckoning of this historic president and his inner circle, and of how their policies may or may not continue to shape America and the world.
The Blood of Heroes: The 13-Day Struggle for the Alamo--and the Sacrifice That Forged a Nation ISBN: 0316053740 | 2012 | EPUB | 512 pages | 1 MB On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican army led by dictator Santa Anna reached San Antonio and laid siege to about 175 Texas rebels holed up in the Alamo. The Texans refused to surrender for nearly two weeks until almost 2,000 Mexican troops unleashed a final assault. The defenders fought valiantly-for their lives and for a free and independent Texas-but in the end, they were all slaughtered. Their ultimate sacrifice inspired the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" and eventual triumph. Exhaustively researched, and drawing upon fresh primary sources in U.S. and Mexican archives, THE BLOOD OF HEROES is the definitive account of this epic battle. Populated by larger-than-life characters--including Davy Crockett, James Bowie, William Barret Travis--this is a stirring story of audacity, valor, and redemption.

Shards of Honor (Audiobook) English | 2009 | ISBN: 143323193X | 8 hours and 46 minutes | MP3 | 170 MB Shards of Honor introduces Barrayar and Aral Vorkosigan, Beta Colony and Cordelia Naismith, thus beginning a multigenerational saga spanning time as well as space. Recognized as the current exemplar of character-based science fiction, Bujold debuts her beloved Vorkosigan saga with this tale about the future parents of Miles Vorkosigan. Captain Cordelia Naismith of the Betan Expeditionary Force was on a routine mission to study the life forms on an uninhabited, neutral planet. Little did she know that the enemy Barrayarans had chosen this place as their secret base for an as-yet undeclared war. Separated from her team, Cordelia is captured by Lord Aral Vorkosigan, the leader in charge of the Barrayaran mission. Aral himself is caught in a web of political intrigue that has led to a recent attempt on his life. As the two strangers struggle together across the unfriendly terrain of the foreign planet toward Aral's ship, they discover that their greatest danger may be the romance inconveniently developing between them, on the brink of a war that will divide their peoples more strongly than ever.
