Balzac's War Vandermeer creates a strange yet fantastic world through amazing description. I really want to read more on the insane world of Veniss.
Blood Lines This this book isn't typical of the type of thing I read so I'm not sure quite how to go about evaluating it, except to say that yes, I liked it and no, it wasn't preachy. The main characters are members of NCIS, an investigative arm of the Navy. Shel, one of the team members, is a Marine, and has a distant realationship with his father, a fact that still bothers him after all these years. He and his partner are trying to arrest Bobby Lee Gant, things go wrong, Shel has to kill Bobby Lee and, during the operation, Shel is injured. Bobby Lee's father, head of a notorious motorcycle gang, vows revenge on Shel and his family. We learn that Bobby's father and Shel's father had been together in Viet Nam and that something happened that changed Shel's father forever. The team attempts to capture Gant, and Shel tries to find out what happened that day in Viet Nam.
Blood Vine Zoey is the firm's best PR person, and does not know she's working for vampires, or vampire hunters. After the death of her husband years before, she has taken life by the horns and remained matter-of-fact, driven, and cold. She is certainly not going to let her new client in to her heart, despite an odd attraction and the fact that she's been dreaming of him every night since a chance meeting and a failed hook up.
Catherine This story is told in shifting view points between Chelsea and her mother, Catherine, when she was Chelsea's age. This was a great segue into the minds of both characters and what I loved even more about it was that they are the same age as we process what is happening in their lives. Chelsea's mom is around seventeen in the chapters that we read about her and the similarities that can be connected between she and Chelsea are remarkable.
Club Number Five So she hangs around outside where she is attacked. Sam's only injury appears to be some small puncture marks on her neck and she immediately assumes she has been bitten by a vampire and blames Jonathan and his mysterious club where she unsuccessfully tries to enter several times.

Collateral Damage Woods does a little better with this one though. There is a lot more action and plot twists in this one compared to the previous few volumes (a lot like the first few Stone Barrington books that got me hooked). The last few books were page turners just to keep up with a familiar character. This one gets back to the good old Stone Barrington who has just gotten a little older.
Crash Jules Demarco's family has been at war with the Angottis for decades. They each own rival Italian restaurants in Chicago, and the contention has always gotten in between Jules and Sawyer Angotti, who used to be friends as kids. Now in high school, Jules still has a crush on Sawyer, but know better than to ever show it. But for the past few weeks, Jules has been seeing the same horrifying scene over and over again on billboards, windows, and TV screens. It's a wintry evening, and a fiery crash claims the lives of nine victims one of them Sawyer. Jules know she can't be passive about these visions, but can her one-time friendship with Sawyer be enough to convince him that she isn't crazy and his life is in danger?
Cursed by Darkness (An Urban Fantasy Novel)
A daevor named Winx is being punished because she killed five humans. Her wings are taken away, how can a daevor go on without her wings? She is able to stay out of sight until a bandit named Keaton shows up and changes her plans. Keaton's pack is having issues with the Savages. Packs of Savages have been seen more than in the past and Keaton needs her help to save his pack from further attacks. Winx finds out that the lixyn, the highest authority in the supernatural world, have figured out where she has been hiding and want her to do the job she was trained to do.
Dark Warrior: To Tame a Wild Hawk This was a powerful story and I really enjoyed it. Set in 1871, in Wyoming, this is the story of Mandy, who is fighting to save her ranch from the local bad-guy, McCandle, who wants her ranch and plans to marry her to get it. For years, Mandy has had visions of the man that she will marry and it is not McCandle, it is Hawk.
Delusion Opening-night jitters are nothing new for seventeen-year-old Phil and her sister Fee, who come from a centuries-old line of stage illusionists. The girls love to dazzle London audiences, but in the aftermath of the Blitz they’re shipped off to the countryside, away from the bombs and Nazis. Phil, however, wants to fight for her country, and when she stumbles upon a hidden college of real magicians led by the devastatingly handsome Arden, all she wants to do is persuade them to help England win the war. She’ll risk anything to give her country a fighting chance, even if it means losing her heart ...or her life.

Dream Eyes I liked the book. Overall, it was a snappy and charming story. The best book JAK has put out in a while and her Dark Legacy series is definitely looking up. However, I'll be completely upfront- there are some flaws and some readers may be disappointed. For me, though, I thought the positives far outweighed the negatives. My impression of this book is that it had a really pleasant sense of JAK charm and nostalgia. It isn't one of her very best books (which actually isn't an insult because she has written some really awesome books) but it was enjoyable and worth the money I paid.
Fair Play Tove Jansson never fails to astonish me. Her children's books are gems (The Moomintrolls) that are equally lovely to read for children and adults. Her books for adults are as cold and clear as fjords or Scandinavian sunlight. She describes ordinary events with such clarity and precision that rather than remaining simple, they take on the layers of complexity that color human interaction. The short stories in Fair Play are loosely autobiographical about her relationship with her long time partner Tuulikki Pietila.
Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild The four fish of the title are salmon, bass, tuna and cod, which are today the world's dominant wild-caught and farmed fish. Mr. Greenberg devotes a long chapter to each of these finned culinary staples. He ties their stories together by showing how each represents one discrete step that humanity has taken, sometimes over hundreds or thousands of years, to increase and control the tasty, nutritious largess of the sea.
Grounds to Kill This book goes in my 'waiting room playlist' A book I can pick up and put down in the dentist's waiting room or at the evil in-laws... a wonderful, amusing diversion from life's sucky realities.
Identity When I got word that Ted Dekker was releasing four serial novels over the course of four weeks, all dealing with the search we all go through finding out who we are, I was definitely intrigued. He didn't disappoint.

Ineligible Bachelor Logan insists on calling her Freddy, no matter how many times she's tried to rid herself of her childhood nickname, and the memory of how she squashed him (and his pride) in football so many years ago. Will he ever look at her the way she dreams he will? And how on earth, with the wish of attracting him, can she mess things up so much that he ends up on a reality show, where he's supposed to choose the woman of his dreams, totally against his will?
Just One Day Allyson was such a strange and unrealistic narrator. Always the smart girl, the girl who played it safe, and then she meets Willem and he unlocks a side of her that she herself didn't know existed. Allyson had been on a tour of Europe for several weeks but had never got to see Paris, so he asks for her to go with him there. And this is where I get even MORE disturbed. They have one single day in Paris and it ended up being the most random, jumbled and seemingly unenjoyable day. So it wasn't the type of day spent in Paris like you see in the movies but they didn't even DO anything! So much beauty surrounded them and for part of it they ended up taking a nap in the park?
Key of Living Fire Fantastic! Scott Appleton weaves another wonderful story in this epic series. Key of Living is book 3 in The Sword of the Dragon series. As the Hemmed Land start to become uninhabitable Ilfedo must set up a search for new land to relocate his people. He puts Ombre, Caritha, and Oganna up to the task, but Ilfedo finds himself on his own quest to secure the key of living fire before the enemy gets a hold of it. If Letrias' agent gets the key of fire before Ilfedo, his sword would lose its power, and it would become just another sword, everything depends on the Key of Living Fire including the future and survival of Oganna.
Lucien Five years ago, businessman Lucien Masters made a deal with his grandfather to save his sisters’ inheritances that required he marry by his thirtieth birthday. Ten days before the deadline and his fiancee in the wind, Luc scrambles to find a replacement bride. Fortunately, the solution to his problem is sitting right across the office and struggling with a few issues of her own.
Paper Valentine I first read Brenna Yovanoff in last year's THE SPACE BETWEEN (which I reviewed for Tor.com). Her writing is arresting and-at times-uncomfortably immersive. It's as if Brenna cracks open her characters skulls and lets all the messy and heartbreaking parts spill onto the pages. In PAPER VALENTINE, that same raw and naked emotion drips across every scene.

Prince of Power Prince of Power is the second book in the Chronicles of Yavn series, it picks up the plot threads let open in King of Darkness and runs with them. I enjoyed the first installment in the series but this book really blew me away! If you love a fast paced, action packed romance with a strong female and a softer caring male then this is one for you.
Second Shift - Order I have been waiting VERY impatiently for this book to come out, and I blew through it in 2 nights. I hate to use cheesy book-review cliches, but this is absolutely another 'impossible-to-put-down' installment to the Wool series. Seriously...it's fantastic. So many times you read a series of books where, more often than not, the further the series progresses, the weaker it gets. That is not the c
Shadowlands An excellent book! You won't be able to put down! Very suspensful. It leaves you hanging and I can not wait for the next one!
Shine Light First she must solve the mystery of Ixion’s eternal night. Then she must convince everyone rebels and revellers alike – to join her cause. And all the while, she must fight the urge to go to Lenoir her greatest love, her mortal enemy.
Taken (An Elvis Cole Novel) Add the painstaking detective work, the genuine humanity, the nerve-racking tension, the thrilling action, and unbelievable suspense that only a talented writer like Robert Crais can bring to this novel and you have a thriller that you won't soon forget.

Then You Were Gone I liked how Then You Were Gone had snippets from the past friendship of Dakota and Adrienne, showing where Adrienne's feelings came from and helping me to understand that there was something deeper there for her, and trying to understand what made Dakota tick and what exactly ended their friendship. For Adrienne, to me it seemed that it was unresolved and a feeling of guilt, because she got that phone call from Dakota and she didn't know why she was calling, and then came the rumors she was missing and the speculation that she had killed herself.
The Agincourt Bride The epic story of the queen who founded the Tudor dynasty, told through the eyes of her loyal nursemaid. Perfect for fans of Philipa Gregory. Her beauty fuelled a war. Her courage captured a king. Her passion would launch the Tudor dynasty. When her own first child is tragically still-born, the young Mette is pressed into service as a wet-nurse at the court of the mad king, Charles VI of France.
The Beggar King: A Hangman's Daughter Tale The Beggar King is the third in a series by Oliver Potzsch. The first is The Hangman's Daughter, which introduces Jakob Kuisl, the Hangman of Schongau, along with other main characters, his wife Anna Maria, children Magdalena, Georg and Barbara and the son of the town doctor, Simon Fronweiser. The second book, The Dark Monk was just as strong a story as the first and was my favorite in the series until I just finished The Beggar King. This story had me on the edge of my seat and didn't let go of me until the very end. I see that there is another installment coming, The Warlock, and I think you can imagine how excited I am to hear another book in this series in on the way!
The Blood Gospel: The Order of the Sanguines Series I am a James Rollins fan who had absolutely no idea what I was in for when I selected this book to review. Fortunately, I am also a fan of urban fantasy and the supernatural, so I was pleasantly surprised at what I got. I really
enjoyed this book. The action is non-stop and the main characters were all interesting and well-developed. Even the bad guys were interesting and surprisingly sympathetic - yeah, they were evil, but you could kind of see how they ended up that way and feel a little sorry for them.
The Blue Girl "The Blue Girl" is an excellent starting point for newcomers to Newford, and for long-time fans it's a welcome addition to the Newford mythology. While it's always a pleasure to read about the new adventures of Jilly, Geordie and other Newford regulars, it's a treat to be introduced to new, fully realized characters in this exciting, mystical city.

The Book of Secrets The author managed to write a novel that reads like a diary, a fascinating history oh Kenya and Tanzania from 1912 until 1988. He starts with Alfred Corbin who represents the British empire as ADC in a tiny Kenian town near the border to Tanganyika. The town had been founded by immigrants from India, who had come to East Africa in the second half of the 19th century.
The Chessman Someone has murdered the Commissioner of the SEC and left a chess piece in the victim's wound. This is the calling card of a serial killer known as the Chessman, with whom Cady has locked horns in the past. Has the Chessman resurfaced or is a copycat at work? Jund wants Cady to help the FBI find the perpetrator. Although he is reluctant to get involved, Cady agrees to lend his expertise to the Bureau one last time. Subconsciously, he may want closure or, if the Chessman is still alive, a bit of long-overdue revenge.
The Child's Child The Child's Child boils over with intrigue and taught psychological suspense (one of the things I've always adored about rendell/vine's writing). This is not a cheery story as its main focus are individuals who are in danger of being ostracized or even driven to self destruction because of society's inability to tolerate or condone their circumstances or predilections. Rendell often makes stunning analogies and in this case it's between the plight of a young unwed pregnant woman and her tormented homosexual brother.
The Death of Bees When 15-year-old Marnie and 12-year-old Nellie's junkie parents die, the girls bury them in the backyard. They didn't want to leave their home and really they were used to being on their own. But with a nosy (albeit well-meaning)
neighbor and a dog who is determined to dig, not to mention the drug lord to whom their dad owes money, how long will they be able to keep their secret.
The Husband List As a Janet Evanovich fan, I'm a little disappointed as I enjoy her humor that lacks a bit in this book. Great story line and characters if you're into historical fiction.

The Impostor The Impostor is a great, thrilling, and romantic read. I highly recommend it. Is it worth checking out? Totally! Do it!
The Space Between Daphne is a half-demon, half-angel daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. She lives in a strange sort of purgatory known as Pandemonium with her sisters, half-brother and other strange creatures from hell. Her life is far from exciting, before her brother Obie is kidnapped and Daphne travels to earth to find him -and instead finds a human boy who teaches her what it means to love and to be human.
The Start of Everything The story of today's little gem is a tangled and complex mystery told from the viewpoints of several of the key players. During the course of the winding tale we hear narratives alternately from the investigators on the case, the victims and even the perpetrators themselves. Each fairly short chapter indicates the point of view represented as well as the time frame. In the end, the story closes with a satisfying click but wends wonderfully on the way getting there.
The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City I absolutely adore David Lebovitz. I took a couple cooking classes from him several years ago and am a fan for life. His recipes are the absolute best plus he is smart and hilarious. So I had to have his book which shares incidents from his life since his move to Paris. It's a quick fun read that will ring true to anyone who's spent time there. David spares
no one, from the French men in their religion revealing bathing suits to the American tourists in their fanny packs and plastic flip flops.
The Tragedy Paper Overall, I really enjoyed reading THE TRAGEDY PAPER. Irving School seems like a very cool place (with some really cool teachers and a bunch of unique and fun traditions that would make being a student there very interesting). Tim's story, especially, is beautifully told. I would recommend this to anyone interested in coming-of-age stories, and to anyone who is currently (or ever was!) a high school student. It's a good novel. I will not soon forget it.

Through the Ever Night I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first book, Under the Never Sky and I really enjoyed that book. Through the Ever Night I just could not put down. If you're anything like me and happen to fall for the secondary characters a lot than you'll absolutely fall head over heels in love with Roar. I am obsessed with him, like fan girling obsessed. You all can fight over Perry but step aside if you're interested in Roar, he's so mine! ) Now don't go bashing me because I'm not fighting for Perry because I do love him, a lot but he's just not my cup of tea. He is perfect for Aria and they're going to make beautiful, strong, intelligent, perfect little babies one day.
Asher's Dilemma Ever since he awoke one day on the floor of his workshop with a brain-splitting headache, Asher Quigley has been haunted by fleeting visions of a beautiful woman everywhere he looks a woman he's sure he knows, but can't recall. In spite of this he has finished his most wondrous invention yet, one that will literally make history: a time machine. But before he can complete his exacting calculations a bizarre accident causes the device to be activated, with him inside! He awakes to find himself in his lab, eight months in the past, and suddenly he remembers her‌
A Place Called Freedom What a very fine writer Ken Follett is! Having read "The eye of the needle" many years ago, and more recently, "Pillars of the earth" and enjoyed them both very much,I just finished reading "A place called freedom".It took only 2 days as I couldn't put it down and for 2 nights, read into the small hours. An indentured Scottish coal miner, Mack McAsh, tries to force the hand of the mine owner into treating the down trodden miners with compassion and fairness. He is railroaded by the system and tranported as a convict to Virginia.
A Stark and Wormy Knight Tad Williams is an acknowledged master of the multi-volume epic. Through such popular series as Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn and Otherland, he has acquired a huge and devoted body of readers who eagerly await each new publication. A Stark and Wormy Knight offers those readers something both special and surprising: a virtuoso demonstration of Williams's mastery of a variety of shorter forms.
The range of tone, theme, style, and content reflected in this generous volume is nothing short of amazing. The title story is a tale within a tale of dragons and knights and is notable for its wit and verbal inventiveness. "The Storm Door" uses The Tibetan Book of the Dead to forge a singular new approach to the traditional zombie story. "The Terrible Conflagration at the Quiller's Mint" offers a brief, independent glimpse into the background of Williams's Shadowmarch series. "Ants" provides an ironic account of what can happen when a marriage goes irrevocably wrong.
A Study in Revenge In 1893, a trail of ashen footprints leads Deputy Archie Lean to the body of a murdered thief. The man’s exposed flesh has been horribly burned and occult symbols mark the nearby walls. Most troubling of all is what Lean witnessed two days earlier: this same man being lowered into his grave without a burn mark on him. Once again, the Portland, Maine, police deputy must turn to the brilliant criminalist Perceval Grey for help.

The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess Published: 2007-12-27 | ISBN: 1583332944 | PDF | 258 pages | 7 MB In The New Rules of Lifting for Women, authors Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythe, and Alwyn Cosgrove present a comprehensive strength, conditioning, and nutrition plan destined to revolutionize the way women work out. This book refutes the misconception that women will -bulk up- if they lift heavy weights. Nonsense! It-s tough enough for men to pack on muscle, and they have much more of the hormone necessary to build muscle: natural testosterone. Muscles need to be strengthened to achieve a lean, healthy look. Properly conditioned muscles increase metabolism and promote weight loss-it-s that simple. The program demands that women put down the -Barbie- weights, step away from the treadmill, and begin a strength and conditioning regime for the natural athlete in every woman. The New Rules of Lifting for Women, now in paperback, will change the way women see fitness, nutrition, and their own bodies.

ProBodX: Proper Body Exercise Published: 2003-07-29 | ISBN: 0060185392 | PDF | 336 pages | 7 MB Do you feel that even with exercise and diet you are far from reaching your fitness goals? You are not alone. Even though we are more into fitness than ever, the programs we use are just not working well enough. Many are even dangerous and can weaken the body and make it prone to injury. Marv Marinovich, former conditioning coach for the Oakland Raiders and renowned sports trainer, and Dr. Edythe Heus, a chiropractor specializing in rehabilitating elite athletes, have developed ProBodX (Proper Body Exercise) to close this fitness gap. ProBodX is the only fitness and conditioning program that safely builds and tones muscle while increasing strength, flexibility, balance, and grace. ProBodX was originally designed for professional athletes -- such as Jason Sehorn of the New York Giants and Steve Finley of the Arizona Diamondbacks -- looking to increase their level of athleticism and to avoid injury. In this book, the program has been designed for anyone who wants to improve athletic ability or simply get in shape and stay in shape without injury. Essentially the ProBodX program combines unstable surfaces (gymnastic balls, slant boards, balance disks) with multiplane movement and strength loading (special hand and foot weights) to simultaneously stretch and strengthen the body. The result is a stimulated nervous system and increased speed, power, and flexibility. Whether your interest is reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle, playing sports, or just maintaining a healthy body, ProBodX's unique balanced fitness program can help. In addition, the program includes a dynamic eating program based on Barry Sears's Zone Diet to truly jump start the body and see real results in four to six weeks.

Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory, and the Conquest of Everest Published: 2011-10-18 | ISBN: 0375708154, 0375408894 | PDF | 672 pages | 3 MB On June 6, 1924, two men set out from a camp perched at 23,000 feet on an ice ledge just below the lip of Mount Everest’s North Col. George Mallory, thirty-seven, was Britain’s finest climber. Sandy Irvine was a young Oxford scholar of twenty-two with little previous mountaineering experience. Neither of them returned. In this magisterial work of history and adventure, based on more than a decade of prodigious research in British, Canadian, and European archives, and months in the field in Nepal and Tibet, Wade Davis vividly re-creates British climbers’ epic attempts to scale Mount Everest in the early 1920s. With new access to letters and diaries, Davis recounts the heroic efforts of George Mallory and his fellow climbers to conquer the mountain in the face of treacherous terrain and furious weather. Into the Silence sets their remarkable achievements in sweeping historical context: Davis shows how the exploration originated in nineteenth-century imperial ambitions, and he takes us far beyond the Himalayas to the trenches of World War I, where Mallory and his generation found themselves and their world utterly shattered. In the wake of the war that destroyed all notions of honor and decency, the Everest
expeditions, led by these scions of Britain’s elite, emerged as a symbol of national redemption and hope. Beautifully written and rich with detail, Into the Silence is a classic account of exploration and endurance, and a timeless portrait of an extraordinary generation of adventurers, soldiers, and mountaineers the likes of which we will never see again.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking 2005 | ISBN: 0316172324, 0316010669 | EPUB, MOBI, PDF | 288 pages | 5,4 MB In his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How
do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.

Outliers: The Story of Success 2008 | ISBN: 0316017922, 0316017930 | PDF, EPUB | 309 pages | 4 MB In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band. Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.
Cleopatra: A Life 2010 | ISBN-10: 0316001929 | PDF, EPUB | 368 pages | 4 MB The Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer brings to life the most intriguing woman in the history of the world: Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt. Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. Ultimately she dispensed with an ambitious sister as well; incest and assassination were family specialties. Cleopatra appears to have had sex with only two men. They happen, however, to have been Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, among the most prominent Romans of the day. Both were married to other women. Cleopatra had a child with Caesar and--after his murder--three more with his protege. Already she was the wealthiest ruler in the Mediterranean; the relationship with Antony confirmed her status as the most influential woman of the age. The two would together attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled their ends. Cleopatra has lodged herself in our imaginations ever since. Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Shakespeare and Shaw put words in her mouth. Michelangelo, Tiepolo, and Elizabeth Taylor put a face to her name. Along the way, Cleopatra's supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order. Rich in detail, epic in scope, Schiff 's is a luminous, deeply original reconstruction of a dazzling life.

With all of her diverse experiences, it stands to reason that Joan has seen, done, said, and heard a lot of hateful things. Thank god, she took notes. Here—uncensored and totally uninhibited—she give the best of her worst to First Ladies, closet cases, hypocrites, Hollywood, feminists, and overrated historical figures. And even when letting herself have it, Joan doesn’t hold back in this honest, unabashedly hilarious love letter to the hater in all of us.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption 2011 | ISBN: 1400064163, 0375435018 | 496 pages | EPUB, MOBI | 1,8 + 2 MB On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War. The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail 2012 | ISBN-10: 0307592731, 0307476073 | EPUB, MOBI | 336 pages | 3 MB A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an eleven-hundred-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe—and built her back up again. At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone. Strayed faces down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.
Becoming Sister Wives: The Story of an Unconventional Marriage 2012 | ISBN-10: 1451661215, 1451661304 | EPUB | 288 pages | 1,8 In many ways, the Browns are like any other middle-American family. They eat, play, and pray together, squabble and hug, striving to raise happy, well-adjusted children while keeping their relationship loving and strong. The difference is, there are five adults in the openly polygamous Brown marriage—Kody and his four wives—who among them have seventeen children. Since TLC first launched its popular reality program Sister Wives, the Browns have become one of the most famous families in the country. Now Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn reveal in their own words exactly how their special relationship works—the love and faith that drew them together, the plusses and pitfalls of having sister wives, and the practical and emotional complications of a lifestyle viewed by many with distrust, prejudice, even fear. With the candor and frankness that have drawn millions to their show, they talk about what makes their fascinating family work, addressing the topics that intrigue outsiders: How do the four relationships differ? What effect does a polygamous upbringing have on their children? What are the challenges—emotional, social, or financial—involved in living this lifestyle? Is it possible for all four sister wives to feel special when sharing a husband—and what happens when jealousy arises? How has being on camera changed their lives? And what’s it like to add a new wife to the family—or to be that new wife? Filled with humor, warmth, surprising insights, and remarkable honesty, this is a singular story of plural marriage and all the struggles and joys that go with it. At heart, it’s a love story—unconventional but immediately recognizable in the daily moments of trust, acceptance, forgiveness, passion, and commitment that go into making one big, happy, extraordinary family.

The Memory Palace English | 2011-01-11 | ISBN: 1439183317 | 320 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 6.61 mb “People have abandoned their loved ones for much less than you’ve been through,” Mira BartÓk is told at her mother’s memorial service. It is a poignant observation about the relationship between Mira, her sister, and their mentally ill mother. Before she was struck with schizophrenia at the age of nineteen, beautiful piano protÉgÉ Norma Herr had been the most vibrant personality in the room. She loved her daughters and did her best to raise them well, but as her mental state deteriorated, Norma spoke less about Chopin and more about Nazis and her fear that her daughters would be kidnapped, murdered, or raped. When the girls left for college, the harassment escalated—Norma called them obsessively, appeared at their apartments or jobs, threatened to kill herself if they did not return home. After a traumatic encounter, Mira and her sister were left with no choice but to change their names and sever all contact with Norma in order to stay safe. But while Mira pursued her career as an artist—exploring the ancient romance of Florence, the eerie mysticism of northern Norway, and the raw desert of Israel—the haunting memories of her mother were never far away. Then one day, Mira’s life changed forever after a debilitating car accident. As she struggled to recover from a traumatic brain injury, she was confronted with a need to recontextualize her life—she had to relearn how to paint, read, and interact with the outside world. In her search for a way back to her lost self, Mira reached out to the homeless shelter where she believed her mother was living and discovered that Norma was dying. Mira and her sister traveled to Cleveland, where they shared an extraordinary reconciliation with their mother that none of them had thought possible. At the hospital, Mira discovered a set of keys that opened a storage unit Norma had been keeping for seventeen years. Filled with family photos, childhood toys, and ephemera from Norma’s life, the storage unit brought back a flood of previous memories that Mira had thought were lost to her forever. The Memory Palace is a breathtaking literary memoir about the complex meaning of love, truth, and the capacity for forgiveness among family. Through stunning prose and original art created by the author in tandem with the text, The Memory Palace explores the connections between mother and daughter that cannot be broken no matter how much exists—or is lost—between them.

Pirate Hunter of the Caribbean: The Adventurous Life of Captain Woodes Rogers English | 2011-05-17 | ISBN: 1400068150, 0812980174 | 320 pages | EPUB | 7.4 mb
From David Cordingly, one of the world’s foremost experts on pirate history, and author of the perennial favorite Under the Black Flag, comes the thrilling story of the man who fought the real pirates of the Caribbean. Sea captain, privateer, and colonial governor, Woodes Rogers was one of the early eighteenth century’s boldest and most colorful characters. Pirate Hunter of the Caribbean is the definitive account of his incredible life. At a time when Europe’s maritime nations fought over islands and territories, and pirates and other scoundrels were flourishing, Rogers sailed into the center of the action. In 1708, in the midst of Britain’s war with Spain, Rogers was hired to lead a mission against Spanish targets in the Pacific. A fearless adventurer who lost his fortune as often as his temper, he battled scurvy and hurricanes and mutinies—and along the way captured a treasure galleon and rescued the shipwrecked Alexander Selkirk, whose four-year ordeal on a remote Pacific island inspired Daniel Defoe to write Robinson Crusoe. When the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 led to an explosion of piracy in the Caribbean, King George I appointed Rogers governor of the Bahamas. There he found himself in charge of a string of islands being plundered by raucous felons, from the notorious “Blackbeard,” who kept lit matches under his hat to give himself a hellish cast, to Charles Vane, a particularly brutal pirate captain, to Anne Bonny and Mary Read, rare female pirates who escaped the hangman’s noose only by revealing their pregnancies. With rich and vivid details and plenty of action, David Cordingly chronicles a rollicking adventure that is as fascinating and gripping as any seafaring legend.

The Heart and the Fist: The education of a humanitarian, the making of a Navy SEAL English | 2011-04-11 | ISBN: 054742485X | 320 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 6 mb The Hearts and the Fist shares one man’s story of extraordinary leadership and service as both a humanitarian and a warrior. In a life lived at the raw edges of the human experience, Greitens has seen what can be accomplished when compassion and courage come together in meaningful service. As a Rhodes Scholar and Navy SEAL, Greitens worked alongside volunteers who taught art to street children in Bolivia and led US Marines who hunted terrorists in Iraq. He’s learned from nuns who fed the destitute in one of Mother Teresa’s homes for the dying in India, from aid workers who healed orphaned children in Rwanda, and from Navy SEALs who fought in Afghanistan. He excelled at the hardest military training in the world, and today he works with severely wounded and disabled veterans who are rebuilding their lives as community leaders at home. Greitens offers each of us a new way of thinking about living a meaningful life. We learn that to win any war, even those we wage against ourselves; to create and obtain lasting peace; to save a life; and even, simply to live with purpose requires us—every one of us—to be both good and strong.

A New Kind of Monster: The Secret Life and Shocking True Crimes of an Officer . . . and a Murderer English | 2011-04-05 | ISBN: 030788872X | 304 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 6.82 mb Ripped from the headlines, the horrific and astonishing true story of the double life of Russell Williams, who was at once a respected figure in the Canadian military and a ruthless sado-sexual serial criminal and murderer. In the annals of psycho-killers, Colonel Russell Williams may well be unique. A decorated air force colonel, Williams was, for years, living a double life as a sado-sexual home invader, burglar, pedophile, and, ultimately, murderer. A model officer and elite pilot, he was trusted with flying international dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth, as well as commanding Canada's most important military airbase. Yet his dark and violent secret life included breaking into 82 homes of girls and women; thefts of vast amounts of lingerie (which he dressed in); two bizarre sexual assaults that left an uncomprehending Ontario village on a knife's-edge; and eventually, two rape-murders. When police raided Williams's home--a home he shared with his wife, a respected professional in her own right who was apparently completely unaware of her husband's unconscionable double life--they found hundreds of pairs of women's
underwear, meticulously organized and catalogued. In this book, veteran Globe and Mail crime reporter Tim Appleby chronicles a true story that could have been lifted from the darkest pages of pulp fiction, one that offers fascinating-and troubling--insights on human psychopathology.
A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War English | 2011-06-28 | ISBN: 037550494X | 1008 pages | EPUB | 10.89 mb Acclaimed historian Amanda Foreman follows the phenomenal success of her New York Times bestseller Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire with her long-awaited second work of nonfiction: the fascinating story of the American Civil War and the major role played by Britain and its citizens in that epic struggle. Even before the first rumblings of secession shook the halls of Congress, British involvement in the coming schism was inevitable. Britain was dependent on the South for cotton, and in turn the Confederacy relied almost exclusively on Britain for guns, bullets, and ships. The Union sought to block any diplomacy between the two and consistently teetered on the brink of war with Britain. For four years the complex web of relationships between the countries led to defeats and victories both minute and history-making. In A World on Fire, Amanda Foreman examines the fraught relations from multiple angles while she introduces characters both humble and grand, bringing them to vivid life over the course of her sweeping and brilliant narrative. Between 1861 and 1865, thousands of British citizens volunteered for service on both sides of the Civil War. From the first cannon blasts on Fort Sumter to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, they served as officers and infantrymen, sailors and nurses, blockade runners and spies. Through personal letters, diaries, and journals, Foreman has woven together their experiences to form a panoramic yet intimate view of the war on the front lines, in the prison camps, and in the great cities of both the Union and the Confederacy. Through the eyes of these brave volunteers we see the details of the struggle for life and the great and powerful forces that threatened to demolish a nation. In the drawing rooms of London and the offices of Washington, on muddy fields and aboard packed ships, Foreman reveals the decisions made, the beliefs held and contested, and the personal triumphs and sacrifices that ultimately led to the reunification of America. A World on Fire is a complex and groundbreaking work that will surely cement Amanda Foreman’s position as one of the most influential historians of our time.
To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 English | 2011-05-03 | ISBN: 0618758283 | 480 pages | EPUB | 4 mb World War I stands as one of history’s most senseless spasms of carnage, defying rational explanation. In a riveting, suspenseful narrative with haunting echoes for our own time, Adam Hochschild brings it to life as never before. He focuses on the long-ignored moral drama of the war’s critics, alongside its generals and heroes. Thrown in jail for their opposition to the war were Britain’s leading investigative journalist, a future winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and an editor who, behind bars, published a newspaper for his fellow inmates on toilet paper. These critics were sometimes intimately connected to their enemy hawks: one of Britain’s most prominent women pacifist campaigners had a brother who was commander in chief on the Western Front. Two well-known sisters split so bitterly over the war that they ended up publishing newspapers that attacked each other. Today, hundreds of military cemeteries spread across the fields of northern France and Belgium contain the bodies of millions of men who died in the “war to end all wars.” Can we ever avoid repeating history?
All Hell Let Loose: The World at War 1939-45 English | 2011-11-01 | ISBN: 0007338090 | 748 pages | EPUB | 3.50 mb A magisterial history of the greatest and most terrible event in history, from one of the finest historians of the Second World War. A book which shows the impact of war upon hundreds of millions of people around the world- soldiers, sailors and airmen; housewives, farm workers and children.
Reflecting Max Hastings’s thirty-five years of research on World War II, All Hell Let Loose describes the course of events, but focuses chiefly upon human experience, which varied immensely from campaign to campaign, continent to continent. The author emphasises the Russian front, where more than 90% of all German soldiers who perished met their fate. He argues that, while Hitler’s army often fought its battles brilliantly well, the Nazis conducted their war effort with ‘stunning incompetence’. He suggests that the Royal Navy and US Navy were their countries’ outstanding fighting services, while the industrial contribution of the United States was much more important to allied victory than that of the US Army. The book ranges across a vast canvas, from the agony of Poland amid the September 1939 Nazi invasion, to the 1943 Bengal famine, in which at least a million people died under British rule- and British neglect. Among many vignettes, there are the RAF’s legendary raid on the Ruhr dams, the horrors of Arctic convoys, desert tank combat, jungle clashes. Some of Hastings’s insights and judgements will surprise students of the conflict, while there are vivid descriptions of the tragedies and triumphs of a host of ordinary people, in uniform and out of it. ‘The cliché is profoundly true’, he says. ‘The world between 1939 and 1945 saw some human beings plumb the depths of baseness, while others scaled the heights of courage and nobility’. This is ‘everyman’s story’, an attempt to answer the question: ‘What was the Second World War like ?’, and also an overview of the big picture. Max Hastings employs the technique which has made many of his previous books best-sellers, combining top-down analysis and bottom-up testimony to explore the meaning of this vast conflict both for its participants and for posterity.

The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre 2011 | 680 Pages | ISBN: 0813136067 | PDF | 7 MB Often typecast as a menacing figure, Peter Lorre achieved Hollywood fame first as a featured player and later as a character actor, trademarking his screen performances with a delicately strung balance between good and evil. His portrayal of the child murderer in Fritz Lang's masterpiece M (1931) catapulted him to international fame. Lang said of Lorre: "He gave one of the best performances in film history and certainly the best in his life." Today, the Hungarianborn actor is also recognized for his riveting performances in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and Casablanca (1942). Lorre arrived in America in 1934 expecting to shed his screen image as a villain. He even tried to lose his signature accent, but Hollywood repeatedly cast him as an outsider who hinted at things better left unknown. Seeking greater control over his career, Lorre established his own production company. His unofficial "graylisting" by the House Committee on Un-American Activities, however, left him with little work. He returned to Germany, where he co-authored, directed, and starred in the film Der Verlorene (The Lost One) in 1951. German audiences rejected Lorre's dark vision of their recent past, and the actor returned to America, wearily accepting roles that parodied his sinister movie personality. The first biography of this major actor, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre draws upon more than three hundred interviews, including conversations with directors Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, John Huston, Frank Capra, and Rouben Mamoulian, who speak candidly about Lorre, both the man and the actor. Author Stephen D. Youngkin examines for the first time Lorre's pivotal relationship with German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, his experience as an émigré from Hitler's Germany, his battle with drug addiction, and his struggle with the choice between celebrity and intellectual respectability.Separating the enigmatic person from the persona long associated with one of classic Hollywood's most recognizable faces, The Lost One is the definitive account of a life triumphant and yet tragically riddled with many failed possibilities.

Evil Plans - Having Fun on the Road to World Domination
SBN 10: 1591843847 | 2011 | MOBI | 179 pages | 2.5 MB The acclaimed author of Ignore Everybody is back with more irreverent wisdom, wit, and original cartoons. "It has never been easier to make a great living doing what you love. But to make it happen, first you need an EVIL PLAN. Everybody needs to get away from lousy bosses, from boring, dead-end jobs that they hate, and ACTUALLY start doing something they love, something that matters. Life is short." -Hugh MacLeod Freud once said that in order to be truly happy people need two things: the capacity to work and the capacity to love. Evil Plans is about being able to do both at the same time. The sometimes unfortunate side effect is that others will hate you for it. MacLeod's insights are brash, wise, and often funny.

The Silver Thread (Audiobook) 2012 | 13 hours and 50 mins | ISBN: 1471309541 | MP3 64 kbps | 400 MB Dublin, 1840: Rhia Mahoney watches in despair as her father's linen warehouse goes up in flames. Her family is ruined. Her imagined future, full of pattern and colour, plum brocades and beetle-green taffeta, crumbles to ashes. Seeking work as a governess in dismal London, Rhia's life is changed beyond all imagination when her uncle, a shipping merchant, commits suicide. Rhia cannot - will not - believe he would take his own life, but before she can investigate, she is accused of a crime she didn't commit, and forced to board a prison ship bound for New South Wales. The voyage is one of dry biscuits and endless sea, made bearable by the women's daily chore: to sew scraps of cloth into an elaborate quilt. What Rhia does not realise is that with every stitch, she finds herself closer to a journey of discovery that will not end in Australia....
How to Be Richer, Smarter, and Better-Looking Than Your Parents (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2012 | 7 hours and 40 mins | ISBN: n/a , ASIN: B00872W5XI | MP3 64 kbps | 220 MB Striking out on your own for the first time is exhilarating. But in a culture full of bad advice, predatory banks, and splurge-now-pay-later temptations, it can also be extremely dangerous - leading you to make financial decisions that could hurt you for years to come. Combine this with a slumped economy, mounds of student loans, and dubious examples from reality TV stars to politicians to your own parents, and it's no wonder so many twenty-somethings are struggling. Twenty-three-year-old Zac Bissonnette - the author of Debt-Free U - knows exactly what you're going through. He demystifies the many traps young people fall victim to in their post-college years. He offers fresh insights on
everything from job hunting to buying a car to saving for retirement that will give you a foundation for a secure, stable, and happy life. In the process, he reveals why FICO scores are overrated, online job applications are a waste of time, car loans are for suckers, and credit-card rewards are a scam. With detours to discuss wine connoisseurs, Really Broke Housewives, and Lenny Dykstra, Zac shows you how to make better choices today so you can be richer, smarter (and better-looking!) for years to come. uploaded (Part 1)

The Woodcut Artist's Handbook Fir.fly Books | 2010 | ISBN: 1554076358 | 184 pages | PDF | 57,1 MB The history of woodcuts goes back more than a thousand years. Working carefully and with great precision, the woodcut artist carves a mirror image of a design on wood or other suitable material. The design is then inked and pressed against paper. The technique allows the artist to create an almost unlimited number of impressions of the same work. The precision of the work and the ability of the artist to create multiple impressions allow many fine woodcut artists to create pieces at a reasonable price, which an average collector can afford. The Woodcut Artist's Handbook provides the basics of this craft with a detailed analysis of its tools and media. This improved second edition features two new chapters that teach artists step by step how to make an engraving and linocut. Artists can improve and develop considerable skill in this art by following these instructions and the author's professional tips. Beginners and advanced woodcutters and collectors will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for this craft and art.
