Zipporah's Daughter (The Daughters of England) As the daughter of Comte Gerard d’Aubigne, Lottie encounters a world far different from her cloistered existence at Eversleigh. Here, she meets her half-sister and marries gallant patriot Charles de Tourville. As Louis XVI takes the throne with his queen, Marie Antoinette, Lottie is called back to England, where she finds that Dickon may not be the man she thought he was. Meanwhile, France descends into revolution and Lottie’s family becomes increasingly endangered.
You're the One: Bad Boys of Red Hook Great great story that I highly recommend to everyone. Follow the story of Logan while he learns how to love and Skye while she learns how to accept love. The only bad thing about a Robin Kaye book is that it's over too soon!!!
Windhaven The juxtaposition of the familiar and the strange is so well done as to be almost seamless. The end too is inspired. This is not the traditional "lived happily ever after" tale. As with most events in the book, the end is bitter sweet and reflective of real life. Recommended to any fan of good reading, science fiction of otherwise. Thios is an author who is much under-rated.
Voices in a Haunted Room (The Daughters of England) I don't know if other writer's find it hard to read the same book two or three times. I usually do,with the exception of certain authors, and Phillipa Carr (who is also Victoria Holt,if that is helpful to anyone) is one that I can. I have probably read this book in excess of 10 times over the past 20 years. There is nothing more appealing than being in love with twins!
Virulent: The Release (Volume 1) Anyone who loves the apocalyptic genre will fall in love with this book! Wescott does a tremendous job with leaving you at the edge of your seat throughout the entire book. I can't wait for a sequel and could already see a movie in the future! I highly recommend this read! Loved every minute of it and fell in love with it's characters!
Tidal (Watersong) Tidal is a fantastic installment in the Watersong series. It is filled with heartache, mystery, and mythology and leaves readers begging for more. Ancient history is blended beautifully with the modern storyline and it's hard not to feel a pang of sympathy for the villains. Hocking has created a well-developed cast of characters and an intriguing plot. Readers will want to pick up Elegy, the next installment, as soon as they finish Tidal.
The Watcher in the Shadows When fourteen-year-old Irene Sauvelle moves with her family to Cape House on the coast of Normandy, she's immediately taken by the beauty of the place its expansive cliffs, coasts, and harbors. There, she meets a local boy named Ishmael, and the two soon fall in love. But a dark mystery is about to unfold, involving a reclusive toymaker who lives in a gigantic mansion filled with mechanical beings and shadows of the past.
The Too-Clever Fox: A Tor.Com Original In Ravka, just because you avoid one trap, it doesn't mean you'll escape the next. This story is a companion folk tale to Leigh Bardugo’s upcoming novel, Siege and Storm, the second book in the Grisha Trilogy.
The Testing The style of writing is good and the story kept me reading, but we early see that science is prized, knowledge and initiative are survival tools. The real lesson of Joelle Charbonneau is encouraging young people to learn all they can our race may depend on them, and not just for brutal combat entertainment. This makes it less believable however that her dystopian society would cull the most intelligent young people annually surely they would cull the slowest? If
you know a young person who reads THE TESTING, I would encourage them to discuss it and see which attitudes are relevant to their own lives and which are not.
The Star Attraction Alison shows that she's learned about writing good characters, drama and romance during her years on Days. The Star Attraction is a fun insiders glimpse into Hollywood. I kept wondering if she was basing Billy Fox on someone from her show or just her imagination. If you like romance (that isn't cheesy or overtly graphic), soap operas or just a good storytelling, you'll love this book.
The Pool of St. Branok (The Daughters of England) Young Angelet is fascinated by the haunting rumors surrounding the Pool of St. Branok—superstitious tales of its cursed, bottomless waters. The innocent Cornish girl shares the ghostly story with Benedict Lansdon, the handsome, illegitimate grandson of a family friend, and promises to show him the spot. But tragedy strikes when they meet at the pool, and Angelet and Ben become complicit in a crime that could send Ben to the gallows.
The Patient's Eyes: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes Pirie is a superior writer and he brings all of the characters in "The Patient's Eyes" to brilliant life. Doyle is a callow and troubled young man who comes from a dysfunctional family. Bell is Doyle's mentor, and he may be the real life model for the great fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. Pirie's language, settings, and even the titles he chooses for his chapters are all reminiscent of those used in the Sherlock Holmes stories. There are also puzzles galore in this book to intrigue those who love interesting ciphers.
The Oathbreaker's Shadow In the world of fifteen-year-old Raim, you tie a knot for every promise you make. Break that promise and the knot will burst into flames, scarring your skin and forever marking you as an oathbreaker.
The Mannequin House With a great setting and characters, family feuds, jealousy among the girls and Quinn's personal life becoming more involved in the plot, I enjoyed this even more than the first book in this series and look forward to the next Silas Quinn mystery.
The Longings of Wayward Girls It’s an idyllic New England summer, and Sadie is a precocious only child on the edge of adolescence. It seems like July and August will pass lazily by, just as they have every year before. But one day, Sadie and her best friend play a seemingly harmless prank on a neighborhood girl. Soon after, that same little girl disappears from a backyard barbecue and she is never seen again. Twenty years pass, and Sadie is still living in the same quiet suburb. She’s married to a good man, has two beautiful children, and seems to have put her past behind her. But when a boy from her old neighborhood returns to town, the nightmares of that summer will begin to resurface, and its unsolved mysteries will finally become clear.
The Knowledge Stone The three stories in The Knowledge Stone span fourteen centuries, from the Dark Ages to the present day. First the reader joins two young farm slaves in the 7th Century AD to experience the brutal realities of their common lives. Next the reader is taken into the privileged life of a high-born, haughty and extremely cruel teenage girl in the 14th Century. Finally the reader enters the world of a feckless, dishonest and manipulative middle manager in a typical, large commercial firm in the 21st Century. Woven round the mysterious Knowledge Stone, all three stories draw the reader into a complex web of human actions, emotions and relationships.
The Kindness of Strangers The story begins in the present in happier times. But then the reader is taken back to the past with the story of Jordan, the young boy that is being abused, as well as the story of Sarah Laden and her family, and how they cope with the death of their father. They are already going through a lot before they take in Jordan, a boy they had known for a long time but never knew what went on behind closed doors.
The Keep: The Watchers I could't put it down!!!! Can't wait for the next, please, please please let's hope I don't have to wait long.
The Ionia Sanction "The Ionia Sanction" is a riotous romp through ancient Greece. Lovers of history, especially of the ancient world, will definitely want to read this mystery. It is a fast-paced, easy-to-read novel. The characters speak as though they are living in present-day United States. At the beginning of the novel, the author graciously provides "The Actors," which is a cast of characters with pronunciations for each name. There are also two very helpful maps.
The First Rule of Swimming "The First Rule Of Swimming" is the gripping story of two sisters, Magdalena and Jadranka. They are from Rosmarina, a small Croatian island where Magdalena is content to live forever and Jadranka is too restless to grow old in one place.
The First It's been just over a year since Edmund Blithe died, and just over a month since his fiancee, Emily, stopped wearing her engagement ring. Emily has finally begun to move on‌ Until Edmund mysteriously and inexplicably returns, sending the world and Emily into a tailspin.
The Dramatist If you are unfamiliar with Ken Bruen's work in general and with the Jack Taylor novels in particular, THE DRAMATIST is a great place to make the acquaintance of both. It represents the author firing on all cylinders. Fans of Bruen's work, and those already acquainted with Jack Taylor, be forewarned: nothing in those earlier novels will prepare you for what transpires at the end of this one. But, in retrospect, everything there should have done so.
The Dragonfly Pool The children at Delderton are invited to a folk-dance festival in Bergania, and when Nazi conspirators assassinate the king, the children smuggle Karil out of the country to safety in England. This beautifully written story is full of adventure, narrow escapes, excitement, humor, and well-portrayed, believable characters, and Tally herself is courageous, intelligent, friendly, and commonsensical. I highly recommend this delightful book to middle schoolers, teens, and grown-ups alike. Don't miss out on it just because it's labeled "young adult."
The Dark Water: The Strange Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes David Pirie's "The Dark Water" is the latest installment in the adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle and his mentor, Joseph Bell, after whom, many believe, Doyle modeled his great fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. The year is 1883, and Thomas Neill Cream, once a friend of Doyle's, has shown himself to be a diabolical and sadistic fiend.
Cream is a handsome, charming, and well spoken sociopath. He adopts a variety of aliases and presents a normal face to the world when it suits his purposes, but when his mask is lifted, he savagely kills and tortures men and women alike, sometimes just for sport.
The Corpse Reader This is a mystery for people who love mysteries: a good length, full of twists and intrigue, a focus on details while still possessing a fast pace. While it was too long to be a one-sit read for me, it was a book I couldn't wait to pick up again and required no effort to get back into. Whether due to the translation, original intention, or both, there's a lot of modernity to writing. This bothered me a bit, but made the plot no less absorbing and I imagine many readers will prefer it that way. The historical fiction quality takes a back seat to the pure plot of mystery, so don't expect to be easily transported to twelfth-century China.
The Cold Hand of Malice (DCI Neil Paget Mysteries) Reasonably good read. Kept you guessing on different suspects. I would probably read another of his books. Strange being set in England.
The Bungalow When the story was over, I was left with a few questions. At first this really bothered me, but truthfully it makes the whole story more realistic. When in real life is everything tied up nice and pretty? Almost never. When the story ended, I was sad. I wanted more I didn't want to leave these characters. I will now have to sit on my hands and wait for Jio's next novel to be published.
The Back Road When a young girl, Abbie Campbell, is knocked over and left for dead on the back road of the village of Little Melham, waves of shock ripple through the small community and a chain of events, which threatens to expose long-kept secrets, is triggered.
The Adulteress (The Daughters of England) That’s the question happily married Zipporah Ransome asks herself when she journeys from Clavering Court to her family’s ancestral home in Eversleigh. At nearby Enderby House, a mysterious place connected to her notorious grandmother Carlotta, Zipporah discovers the power of her untapped desires—and the price of their fulfillment.
The Accidental Time Machine You write what you know, and Joe has pulled from his professorial experiences at MIT to write a very playful tribute to that Institution, its professors, and its students. But, you'll appreciate the references regardless of your background. His characters are quirky and well-developed. The situations he creates for his protagonist range from the mundane to the absurd as he explores differing views on science and technology and what the future may hold. You will also find some pointed commentary about the relationship of current politics to science as well.
Summon Up the Blood (Silas Quinn) First in a brand-new historical mystery series featuring decidedly unconventional turn of the century sleuth, Detective Inspector Silas Quinn. London, 1914. A killer is at liberty in the dark alleys of the city. The cadavers of his victims all have one thing in common: there is no blood in their bodies. As the killer’s reign of terror continues, Scotland Yard’s Detective Inspector Silas Quinn finds his suspicions focusing on the members of an exclusive gentleman’s club . . . Atmospheric and macabre, Summon Up the Blood takes the reader on a disturbing yet fascinating journey through London’s aristocratic watering holes, seedy brothels and shadowy underworld in the turbulent months leading up to World War I.
Strindberg's Star The Arctic, 1897: Nils Strindberg crashes his hydrogen balloon during the mysterious Andree Expedition to the North Pole. Germany, 1942: Gruesome and inexplicable experiments are performed on concentration camp prisoners. Sweden, present-day: Cave diver Erik Hall finds a dead body wearing an ancient ankh, buried deep in an abandoned mine. Religious symbol expert Don Titelman seeks out Erik to study the ankh but finds Erik dead. Don is the prime suspect, and soon he’s being chased across Europe to escape a secret society that will do anything to get their hands on the ankh...
Slow Moon Rising: A Cedar Key Novel A contemporary novel...Dealing with nitty gritty.. issues, I appreciated Ms Everson's willingness to tackle them head on. No whitewashing realities of life...several entwined stories... as the characters worked out..relationships, issues, baggage, and their faith... with inherent emotional responses through years, secrets, and distance separating family members.
Skinny Bitch in Love
"Skinny Bitch in Love" is a quick, fun read. There are plenty of laughs, but the book never lapses into silliness. There's nothing goofy about Clementine. When she's in the kitchen, she has talent and skill, and she shows the same smarts running her business. She seeks advice when she needs it, but she is a smart vegan cookie. In this type of novel, so often the heroine is a dope who just stumbles around until she trips over a solution.
Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death The quality of the stories varies. I really liked the story of the missing engagement ring while I found the one about the missing portrait to be quite sickening and much darker than the other stories. Although each mystery provides the framing and ostensible purpose for the story, it does not always come across as the most important element. Sidney's romantic connections and his life in the church sometimes overshadow his investigations, drawing my attention and sympathy. While each short story is self-contained, it is good to read all of them because the characters drift through, sometimes in London, sometimes in Cambridge. What we learn in the previous story provides additional color to the next.
Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night The loveable full time priest and part time detective Canon Sidney Chambers continues his sleuthing adventures in late 1950's Cambridge. Accompanied by his faithful Labrador Dickens, and working in tandem with the increasingly
exasperated Inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney is called on to investigate the unexpected fall of a Cambridge don from the roof of King's College Chapel a case of arson at a glamor photographer's studio and the poisoning of Zafar Ali, Grantchester's finest spin bowler, in the middle of a crucial game of cricket. As he pursues his quietly probing inquiries, Sidney also has to decide on the vexed question of marriage. Can he choose between the rich, glamorous socialite Amanda Kendall and Hildegard Staunton, a beguiling German widow three years his junior? To help him make up his mind Sidney takes a trip abroad, only to find himself trapped in a complex web of international espionage just as the Berlin Wall is going up.
Saraband for Two Sisters (The Daughters of England) This is an excellent, tightly woven mystery and each page takes us closer to the drama of the English Civil War with every detail accurate and factual. I cry every time I read the ending to this book , which I will not give away. If you love historical romance this is a MUST READ!
Sacred Games Have you ever read a work of fiction that is set solidly in history, that has real historical figures as members of the cast and wondered just how much of it is true? I felt this way with Sacred Games. Everything felt so right, but I still wondered. Corby was prepared for people like us. Included in the book are a cast of characters with pronunciations of their names, historical facts about the Olympic Games of 460 BC, a fascinating Author's Note, and a glossary. I don't always pay attention to such things in the books I read, but I was curious, so I read every bit of them. They add so much to the story that I would suggest that you read them all, too. Dive into this book. Immerse yourself in the entire experience. Chances are, you'll enjoy it every bit as much as I did.
Red Cell Burke, especially, is an extremely riveting character, a wise guy in a number of different ways who is always on the brink of a revelation. Stryker is an extremely capable agent whose inexperience is balanced by a skill set that is partially inherent and partially acquired. And Cooke? She sensed a good fit and brought them together, and is now tasked with riding herd on them or setting them loose, and being wise enough to know when to do either. Henshaw's vision is cinematic in presentation. One could see it as a television series that has a chance to be almost as good as the book and, hopefully, its successors.
Run to Me It's been two years since Shyler O'Neil's beloved son Jesse was killed - but his final moments are as vivid to her now as they were that dreadful day. Suffering from post-traumatic stress, and convinced she did not do enough to protect him, she retreats to an isolated cabin in the woods of northern Maine.
Rose ROSE is a GREAT book. It's definitely worth reading. The author truly put her heart into this book and the story told is wonderful.
Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns Almost a decade has passed since Andy Sachs quit the job “a million girls would die for” working for Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine a dream that turned out to be a nightmare. Andy and Emily, her former nemesis and coassistant, have since joined forces to start a highend bridal magazine. The Plunge has quickly become required reading for the young and stylish. Now they get to call all the shots: Andy writes and travels to her heart’s content Emily plans parties and secures advertising like a seasoned pro. Even better, Andy has met the love of her life. Max Harrison, scion of a storied media family, is confident, successful, and drop-dead gorgeous.
Paradox Meeting up with three other teens one boy seems strangely familiar Ana treks across the inhospitable landscape, occasionally encountering odd twists of light that carry glimpses of people back on Earth. They're working on some sort of problem, and the situation is critical. What is the connection between Ana's mission on this planet and the crisis back on Earth, and how is she supposed to figure out the answer when she can't remember anything?
Paladins of Shannara: The Black Irix The best thing about THE BLACK IRIX is the return of the familiar, seeing characters we have loved for decades once again. If you loved THE SWORD OF SHANNARA and you've always wanted to see those characters again, then you'll love THE BLACK IRIX.
Out of Range There is admittedly a good deal of literary license involved in Steinberg's moving the book forward, but this does not in any way detract from becoming caught up in the fast moving action depicted. Many novels have such license employed with sequences of somewhat illogical action that does not spoil the book for the reader caught up in the crisp, and captivating prose and just enjoying a good book. The ending is in keeping with the action, and does satisfy the reader with the direction of the book.
Nowhere Girl NOWHERE GIRL is about Luchi Ann, but don't tell her I told you her name she'll get very upset. You see, Luchi Ann's mother has just died, and one of the last pieces of advice she gave her daughter was: don't tell anyone your real name. When her mother dies, Luchi Ann has a choice: stay in the Thai women's prison in which she was born in, or leave. Go see the world. Be free.
Night Fall (DCI Neil Paget Mysteries) Detective Inspector Neil Paget faces one of most frustrating cases of his career when a body with no leads is discovered. The discovery of the body of local photographer Billy Travis, having fallen from a bridge on to the railway tracks below, leaves Detective Inspector Neil Paget baffled. While the death plunge was no accident, the corpse found bound and gagged with the letter A is carved into his forehead, Travis led a quiet, unremarkable life. With no evidence or leads to follow, the investigation stonewalls. But when a second body shows up in a similar state, Paget must discover what connects the two victims if he is to have any chance of cracking the case.
Moonglass
MOONGLASS is a subtle tale of love and loss and self-discovery. I found myself falling in love with Tyler Evans right along with Anna. I think fans of Sarah Dessen will also enjoy this book.
Mike Hammer - Complex 90 Complex 90 continues the excellent work of Max Allan Collins finishing Mickey Spillane's manuscripts. Each book in this series has been well written, and I can't wait for the next.
Midsummer's Eve (The Daughters of England) In a city teeming with intrigue as Queen Victoria ascends the throne, Annora meets a man who will play a crucial role in her life. But fate intervenes once more. Amid a heated battle in Parliament, scandal erupts. Annora flees again, this time to the primitive outback of Australia, where she confronts a secret from her father’s violent past. Unexpected tragedy will send Annora back to where it all began, as she comes face to face with the man she never stopped loving . . . a man who may be lost to her forever.
Love and Chaos Emma Jameson is pretty darn happy with her life. She has a good job, a loving family, a decent social life, and a dog who simultaneously adores her and keeps her yard free of squirrels. But with the help of fate and her irresponsible older sister, she gets tossed into the middle of a mess, and comes out on the other side married to Mason, a stranger who makes a cement block look emotional. And let's face it, while her new husband is hot, that doesn't even begin to make up for the fact that he doesn't like dogs, and shows an equal aversion to all things messy and disordered. Too bad Emma named her beloved dog Chaos for a reason, and if she's moving into her new husband's house, the dog is moving in with her.
If You Were Here: A Novel of Suspense McKenna faces a series of devastating blows which lead her to distrust even her beloved husband before her tenacity earns her the support of Scanlin, a cop who has had his own reasons for not liking or believing her in the past. A cracking good suspense tale. Engaging characters, lots of twists and turns and a surprise ending.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties
After reading the short story, I wonder if it might help set the stage for The Ocean at the End of the Lane - which will be coming out later this summer. The Prologue/First Chapter do not yet hint if the world introduced in the short story might be revisited, but there is the continued mystery/strangeness mixed with the familiar which is pure Gaiman. Can't wait for the new book!
Girl Reading The reader comes to a deeper understanding of the early and late Renaissance, the Victorian era, the twentieth century, the present, and beyond. Themes include humanity's inability to see, to know the truth, given the social constructs and limitations which inhibit understanding. And the core image of a girl reading, in this context, is ironic.
Generation V As the first book in the American Vampire series, GENERATION V offers a nice complete story line but leaves plenty of questions open for future books. A little of this is due to the fact that it sometimes tended to jump around a bit, but in the end, I'm left very curious where the series is going. After such a solid debut, I'm sure the second book, IRON NIGHT, will be every bit as enjoyable as the first.
Fringe - The Zodiac Paradox (Novel #1) In this book, you get to know about how Bell and Walter came up with Cortexiphan, alternate universe thing, and forming a triangle to open a gateway to the other side. This book also explains relationship between Bell and Nina. For those who curious about the Violet Sedan Chair, you see some bonding between them and Walter - they even let Walter borrow their place for some operations!
Eversea: A Love Story Wow- loved this book! The characters are real- you feel everything Keri Ann is feeling: the good, the sad, and the sexy! I couldn't put it down, had to know what happened. Can't wait for the next one!!!! Really fun, great read.
Dear Thing I Loved this book, it made you think how you would feel if you were in this position and about the tangled webs we sometimes make for ourselves. Would recommend to others.
Dead Man's Time (Detective Superintendent Roy Grace) As usual a strong relentlessly moving story from a great mystery writer. The storyline itself is enough, add to that a sub-plot and the ongoing 'Sandy' saga this book is a one session read, or it would be if I could stay awake long enough! I have enjoyed all of Peter James' books but especially the Roy Grace series. In this book we learn a lot more about Sandy-but the tease goes on. Nice little twist at the end. I didn't see that coming.
Dead Lions Reading DEAD LIONS sent me back to my early years. Though a big fan of the Bond novels, I also loved John Le Carre's work and this book puts me in mind of some of those classics. The spies here are not pretty boys/girls that have members of the opposite sex falling all over them. Mind you, they get their share though. Just hard working folks who do what's necessary to keep their country safe.
Darkness Unmasked: A Dark Angels Novel I loved Azriel in this installment, heck, I love him in every book but I especially loved him in this one. It's taken him a long while to reach this point but he's now bending Reaper rules left, right, and center for Risa. I've really enjoyed watching his character evolve from a cold, calculating soul collector into a more humanized version of himself. He makes the ultimate sacrifice in this book only to have it blow-up in his face and leave readers with one heck of a cliffhanger. November and Darkness Splintered have never felt so far away!
Comes a Horseman FBI Agents Brady Moore, criminal psychologist, and Alicia Wagner are used to grisly scenes of death. They are the ones assigned to the Pelletier Killings. The murderer uses wolf-dogs to restrain his targets as he uses an axe for the killing blow. Though the MO is the same for the victims, no one could find a link to connect them.
Choke Point (A Risk Agent Novel) The sequel to the exciting The Risk Agent is a powerful thriller with a deep look at a real international social issue. Whereas the audience knows who the good guys are, the villains are shadowy as they have protection from corrupt officials and the victims' families. Fast-paced, readers will appreciate Ridley Pearson's action-packed tale.
Breath of Fire (Rena Drake) Once into it I treated it like a mystery in my mind trying to figure out who the bad guy was. Wow was I wrong. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as must know where this is going next. Will it be a love story for all ages, will the different tribes get along, who will really be the parents of the promised child?
Breaking Point This is another good police procedural from Smith. He's a master of the craft who tells a compelling story that stands on its own without depending on a lot of interest from the chief investigator's private life. Paget is merely human. Smith has, I suspect, resisted the temptation to make Paget brilliant, eccentric, charismatic, or otherwise the superstar of the show, and I commend him for that.
Bled & Breakfast: An Immortality Bites Mystery Right after their wedding in Las Vegas, Sarah and Thierry get their next assignment: Three vampires have gone missing in Salem, Massachusetts, and they need to find out why. Their contact in Salem turns out to be a local lothario with a penchant for witches, but before he can help them, he suddenly goes up in smoke leaving behind nothing but a stain on the ground and a seemingly impossible mystery.
A Killing in the Hills Totally amazing fast paced thriller that was almost impossible to put down...the kind of book that literally grabs you and holds you until you are finished. From the first few pages where the old men were shot while sipping coffee at Salty Dawg's ( and this is not a spoiler, this information is in the book's summary ) to the last amazing pages...this book held me captive. West Virginia, drugs, poverty, and dysfunction tossed in with memorable characters made this book superb.
Beyond the Mists of Katura The Wytch Lords have rallied, men's magic has grown more powerful, and their politics have become altogether more dangerous. Especially now: one of the mages has created a spell, called Dawnthief, which has the potential to destroy all living things on the planet. All four magical colleges are fighting to seize it and, in the background, the Wytch Lords have schemes of their own. Schemes which involve crushing the elven nation for good.
At the Dying of the Year (Richard Nottingham Mysteries) In the latest Richard Nottingham historical mystery, the Constable must track down a predatory child-killer roaming the city. Leeds, 1733. Three children are found dead in a disused bell pit, their bodies battered and bruised, each of them stabbed through the heart. Fear, suspicion and violence tear at the city as Richard Nottingham, John Sedgwick and Rob Lister hunt a ruthless child-killer. The Constable is certain he knows who’s behind the murders, but his efforts to bring the killer to justice brings a blow that strikes right at his own heart.
Abaddon's Gate (The Expanse) Heroism and self-sacrifice have been consistent themes in The Expanse, and that remains true in Abaddon's Gate. Unlikely heroes have always emerged in these novels, and one of the new characters might be the unlikeliest of them all. As one of the minor characters notes, heroism is what happens when people don't think about the consequences of their actions. As another character demonstrates, the same is true of people who commit evil acts. Circumstances often dictate heroism, just as they dictate villainy, a subtle point that Abaddon's Gate illustrates brilliantly.
A Killing Resurrected (DCI Neil Paget Mysteries) When scribbled notes written by Barry Grant, a troubled teenager who committed suicide thirteen years ago, come to light, DCI Paget and DS Tregalles reopen the investigation into a series of robberies that ended with the vicious killing of two people. But, just before the house where Barry grew up is due to be searched for clues, an attempt is made to burn it down, and it becomes obvious that someone is dead set against the case ever being solved...
A Cookbook Conspiracy: A Bibliophile Mystery Just finished the Cookbook Conspiracy by Kate Carlisle. I loved the previous books in this mystery series, but I think this was the best so far. The plot moved along quickly and there were a few red herrings along the way I didn't know "who done it" or why until the very end. The author included lots of intriguing behind the scenes information about the lives and training of top chefs as well as many interesting details about the restoration of old and valuable books. The recipes at the end of the book were an added bonus. I'm already looking forward to the arrival of the next Kate Carlisle book.
A Captain and a Corset
This was a hugely entertaining book to read. Sophia is plucky and wants learn but is unused to the Illuminist society. I liked how she tries to fit in and finds she is stronger than she thinks. Bion is the perfect hero. Sexy and dependable. He is someone Sophia can lean on and who won't let her down. When he discovers her disappearance he won't stop until he finds her and keeps her for his own!
Permeable Borders Hoffman's usual quirky and engaging stories. No other fantasy writer creates her own unique worlds the way she does. If she ever does write a vampire story (which she has not) trust that the vampires and their world will not be like any others anyone has ever written.
Peach Pies and Alibis (A Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery) This second novel in Ellery Adams Charmed Pie Shoppe series is AMAZING! There was so much magic and warmth in this book. I was so mesmerized with this story. I couldn't turn my kindle pages fast enough! The love between Ella Mae and her aunts is truely heart-warming.The magic that Ellery Adams creates in this book is out of this world. As you read Peach Pies and Alibis, you will get lost in all of the magic, the mystery and the love Ella Mae has for her family and hometown. You will laugh, you will cry and you WILL love this story. If you haven't started reading this series, you are really missing out!
Original Skin (An Aector McAvoy Novel) The bleakness of Hull and its sordid and violent crimes make this dark reading, lightened by the Trish-and-Aector byplay and several other Aector moments. Somehow, Aector always seems to stumble into the oddest situations: having to chase down a runaway horse in city traffic and horse-whisper him into compliance being challenged to a bare-knuckled fight that Roisin tells him he is honor-bound to accept bringing cops and suspects home for breakfast with the wife and playtime with the kids. It all makes Aector a crime-novel protagonist you'd like to sit down with for a pint--but probably wouldn't want to be partnered with, either at work or at home.
Matt Archer: Blade's Edge This book was a big step up from the first in terms of darkness, both in the monsters and the story. Matt goes through a lot in this book, some of it gut wrenching. And through it all, even while I was crying as I read, the tone of his sadness stayed understandable and sympathetic. Matt doesn't get emo. He's a soldier, and he has the strength of character to act like the man he's going to become. I would like to explain how this book is so much darker than the first, but to do so would be giving major spoilers.
Ravens of Avalon
As with all her stories on Avalon I enjoyed this book very much. She puts the people, and places in reach, making them real, and alive. Ms. Bradley keeps to the history that everyone knows adding details that can easily be true. She makes the landscapes come alive, one could almost even smell the same smells.
League of Strays L.B. Schulman's writing style is honest, raw and very smooth. It invokes many emotions, good and bad alike. Personally, I found League Of Strays to be absolutely unputdownable. Not only was I dying to find out how the story will end and when/if the revenge-madness will stop, but I was also genuinely scared for Charlotte and afraid of Kade's manipulative personality. I won't lie, this book was all kinds of creepy and disquieting, but never - not even for a minute - was it a meaningless, pointless kind of creepy and disquieting.
Impossible Things At twenty-seven Lucy Jacobs has spent the majority of her life trying to fit in, and to just be normal, but she’s turned her back on who she is and what she loves for so long that she no longer recognizes the woman in the mirror.
Icarus Descending Araboth is destroyed, open war rules both the earth and sky, and Margalis Tast’annin sees himself as the last hope for the Ascendants as they fight against the dangerous energumens. Outside the destroyed City of Trees, Wendy Wanders finds herself joining the rebel forces as they wait for the mythical and mysterious Icarus to turn the tide of the rebellion.
Helix Wars Two hundred years ago, humankind came to the Helix aboard a great colony ship, and the Builders conferred on them the mantle of peacekeepers. For that long, peace has reigned on the Helix. But when shuttle pilot Jeff Ellis crashlands on the world of Phandra, he interrupts a barbarous invasion from the neighbouring Sporelli - who scheme to track down and exterminate Ellis before he can return to New Earth and inform the peacekeepers.
Heart of Obsidian This is the book I have been waiting for. After the first two books in this excellent series, I was convinced that Singh had managed to come up with a killer template for the rest of the series: passionate romance in the midst of intense
political games and violent clashes between ideologies set in a unique and sprawling fantasy world. However, the majority of the rest of the books in the series haven't fully done all that for me though.
Fireblood This mix of story telling from the perspective of the characters really helped me connect with and feel the struggles that each character is having on their journey through this first act. By the end of the book I was fully invested in each of the characters and want to see how each of the them fair in the rest of the books.
Extinguish Extinguish tells a different tale of heaven and hell than I am used to in angel reads. This is no human falling in love with a fallen angel story. Here we have Serah, a warrior angel who enjoys spending her time watching over children and making love with the Archangel, Michael. When she learns a fellow angel near and dear to her heart has fallen, Serah is assigned the task to confront Satan himself and demand a cease-fire in the war of good and evil. And so it begins...
Eve of Destruction Well, well, well. Another winner from S.J. Day in her 'Marked' series, "Eve of Destruction" packs plenty of mystery, action, hot lust, and suspense into 414 pages of reading pleasure. I would caution readers NOT to try and begin the trilogy with this story, book two. Instead, go ahead and splurge cough up the seven bucks and hang on for the ride.
Eve of Darkness The book actually started off weird for me, because it felt like you were walking into the middle of something. But, the pacing quickly reasons itself out, and the story flows really well. It was a very well written first installment for the series, answering the questions that needed immediate answering as well as leaving enough unfinished to leave you wishing you could start on the next book.
Eve of Chaos When Evangeline Hollis spent a night of passion with the darkly seductive Alec Cain, she had no idea that she’d be punished for it years later. Branded with the Mark of Cain, Eve was thrust into a life of hunting demons as penance.
Entwined with You (A Crossfire Novel) From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn't resist. I saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat.
Betrothed For years, Seri’s simple people have lived under the thumb of the Athonites, a regal, erudite caste. She wants no part of politics, though she simply wants to live in peace. But when she’s given the opportunity to work at the enemy’s castle, she takes it, not realizing that she is sealing her own fate.
Earth Afire (The First Formic War) This is the middle book of the prequel trilogy to Ender's Game. It is a great read, not the typical padder between books, but it keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the book. It also really develops the characters and sets things up for the final book. Now, the big question is, how long until the third book is released??
Dire Distraction (An A-Tac Novel) The great thing about this book is that we finally have Avery's HEA. He's been in all the novels and it was so gratifying to see they guy who the whole team loves find happiness. Avery is a character that you fall for just because he's truly a good guy. He'd lay his life down for any member of his team and you can't help but fall in love with him. I really liked that Avery was also a CIA operative. She completely understands AND can hold her own in his world. They were a great match and reading this book made me happy.
Cocktail Hour Great story! I found myself unable to put it down until the last page had been read. The characters are well written and engaging, and the settings feel quite real and relate-able. As with most groups of female friends, there always seems to be one psycho in the bunch, and Bianca more than fills the role in this story.
Breakdown This book absolutely floored me. I'm a big fan of dystopian/post-apocalyptic fiction, and when I discover something like this, something so deep and textured and full of life that it actually brings tears to my eyes, I can't help but tell others about it. Buy it if you like Margaret Atwood's work or if you enjoyed One Second After by William R. Forstchen. It's that good.
Blue Moon: A Samantha Moon Story You would need to read all the Samantha Moon "Vampire for Hire" books to get a sense of her personality, or you might not enjoy this short story. So do yourself a favor, and go and get all of the "Vampire for Hire" series. Number 8 is out soon, and I have them all. I found Blue Moon and the bonus extras, to be an excellent collection of short stories. A great read as usual, always leaving you hanging for more of Samantha Moon.
Big Brother I love the way this author writes and the way she has such believable and interesting female narrators. This was no exception and I not only found Pandora intriguing, I liked her as well. My only (slight) criticism is that at times the dialog sounded a little bit unnatural - but not enough to throw me out of the story and I stopped noticing it as I read on.
Battle Lines: A Department 19 Novel Secret government unit Department 19 is recovering from evil vampire Valeri Rusmanov's deadly attack on their base. The Department’s newest member, teenage operator Jamie Carpenter, is tasked with training up a new squad, as his friends and colleagues desperately search for ways to try to stop what is coming.
A Serpent's Tooth: A Walt Longmire Mystery His latest novel, A Serpent's Tooth, begins when Walt discovers a young boy has been living in Barbara Thomas' pump house, periodically breaking into her home to raid the fridge and repair whatever she has left on her to-do list for him. When Walt catches up to the boy, Cord, he discovers more than just a young man cast out from the Mormon splinter group, The Apostolic Church of the Lamb of God. He finds intrigue involving big oil, big guns, cults, the CIA, a
missing woman, the rather extensive Lynear family with their rather large patriarch, and a cipher of a man claiming to be two hundred years old, blessed with immortality by Mormon leader Joseph Smith himself.
Aestival Tide Aestival Tide brought together all of the things I appreciate most about Elizabeth Hand. Her telling of how relationships would be if sex were no longer important, how the world would be if no one saw the sky, how a man would live if he were no longer a man, how a machine could express humanity, all without being cartoonish or over the top. She creates a world that exists, with flaws and history, yet nothing for most people within to belive in, because they lack the ability to care no matter how hard they try.
Winterlong This book impressed me so much that I've read literally every novel published by Ms. Hand since. The story has the feel of a gothic fairy tale. Such elements as a girl with Death in her eyes, ancient prophecies and a world that is, in equal measures, hi-tech wonderland, post-acopalyptic waste and fantastic feudal realm, Hand has transcended many of the standard boundaries around science fiction. In fact, if I were forced to name the genre of this novel, I would call it gothic sci-fi.
While We Were Watching Downton Abbey From the first page, to the last page, I was hooked. Wendy swiftly brings you into the lives of Samantha, Brooke and Claire and I found that there was a little piece of me in each woman, even though they are all completely different, all three are like friends that you have yet to meet. She continues this wonderful pace as she introduces you to Edward, the thread that binds these woman carefully together using Downton as the Gossamer Cord.
Pretending Normal This was a really good book. It was easy to read and was quite thought provoking in some ways. I would recommend it to others.
We Need New Names The way Darling makes us pay attention to her story and her development is amazing, because the story just kind of glides along but the reader is very much invested. This is quite a feat for a debuting author. You would think that trying to process politics, culture, social ills through the eyes of a child would prove to be difficult, but in the hands of this author it seems easy. And it works.
Truth or Dare I loved the way the characters all relayed their stories to you so you got to see the story from all angles. It kept the story fresh and made you not take sides and although I thought I had the story figured out, I had to keep changing my mind as each character kept covering up those tracks for me. The author did a fabulous job revealing to the reader just a little bit of information at a time to keep the suspense flowing and not overwhelm you with details.
True to the Law If you like western romance this is your book. I enjoyed this book as it was well written and was a pleasure to read. This author has been writing western romance for a long time and she never fails to deliver an enjoyable book.
Tiger Magic (Shifters Unbound) Tiger Magic is full of non-stop action and heart-stopping romance. I am very happy with how things turned out for my ferocious Tiger. Carly is the right kind of woman for him. I'm also excited with the developments going on with the Shifter Bureau and a new character we're introduced to. Some very, very interesting things are coming our way in the Shifter universe!
The Wednesday Sisters Frankie's voice is the right one to tell the story of five women who grow and change with a changing country. Her story looks back at the early years of lifelong friendship, friendship that grows and reflects changes in the early '70s. The Miss America pageant that links their lives is a perfect vehicle to show the changes in these five women, as well as the country.
Sovereign (The Books of Mortals) Could not put this book down and yet didn't want to finish because I didn't want the story to end. The characters became real and continue to occupy my thoughts. Highly recommend this series.
Sing Them Home This is such a dynamic book, I highly recommend it. I had trouble getting to sleep at night worrying about these people and couldn't wait to get back to the book the next day. All the characters of this book display a humaness that we all have. It is believeable and inspiring to follow these people through their lives. It has heart and warmth not easily found anymore in writing. Great work!!!
Siege and Storm This book is even better than the first in the trilogy. I started this review with tears in my eyes partly because I have so long to wait for the third book, but mostly because I am so sad. Alina has gone through so much and Ms. Bardugo is going to put her and Mal and Ravka through so much more. Which makes for great fiction, fiction that moves the heart and stimulates the mind.
The Doll This was a 330 page very satisfying, one day read. Taylor Stevens' dialogue is so realistic and her third person narrative, so colorfully written making the reading of The Doll very smooth and easy. This is a standalone novel, with its own complete and interesting plot, set in a fascinating part of the world, however it is linked to the two past novels, The Informationist and The Innocent. If you have read the other two, it will only add to your enjoyment of The Doll, as Michael's past is so relevant to her mental state and her unique abilities with weapons particularly knives. As The Doll won't be released until June, you have plenty of time to read the first two.
The Distance Between Us: A Memoir This book was written with a deliberate outlook for the issues that are seldom talked about. The passion that Reyna Grande used to stroke this book with, made me not want to put it down. My hope is that people from countries other than Mexico will read it as well.I'm quite sure that she isn't alone in what she experianced.
The Burn Zone
I thought this book was great. I loved how flawed but strong and capable Sam was. The action started early on and did not slow down once. I loved how Sam slowly comes to several very important realizations that not only keep the reader guessing but also flesh out the conspiracy and intrigue. I strongly recommend this book to those who love scifi or strong female leads.
The Blind Man's Garden I enjoyed this book, although I was in a continual tug of war with my emotions. Aslam kept my sympathies, my anger, and even my feelings of disgust continually shifting from side to side in this story. Perhaps this is why I appreciated this book. I was forced to look at the clash of cultures in this desperate and confusing part of the world from both sides. It was enlightening as well as disturbing , forcing me to deeper thinking about my stance.
The Changeling A story of love, envy, passion and betrayal, by Britain's famed historical romance novelist. Fatherless since birth, young Rebecca Mandeville soon becomes motherless as well, left with her infant sister, Belinda, in the custody of Benedict Lansdon, the stepfather she despises. As Rebecca grows into a clever beauty and Belinda into a hellion determined to get her way at all costs, another child, Lucie, is added to the household. Together they make a complex triangle laced with affection but also with jealousy.
The Black Swan Lucie has lived a very unusual life. Through a strange turn of events, she was raised in an "adopted" household with her "adopted" sister, Belinda. She grew up knowing she was not of the same class, and therefore not of the same treatment. Then, unexpectedly, the truth comes out. She is actually the real daughter, and Belinda is the adopted one! All of this was revealed in the previous book in the series "The Changeling". When "The Black Swan" opens, Lucie is the beloved daughter of Benedict Landson, a distinguished politician. Her life is shattered when he is assassinated right in front of her. To make matters worse, her fiance, Joel, is murdered while on a mission to Africa.
The Bitter End (The Golden Crown Series) What a dirty, brutally honest and smoldering hot trip this was! It never ceases to amaze me the level of depth that Rue Volley can mix with the naughtiest of storylines. If you are looking for a dark and unpredictable erotic roller coaster...The Bitter End will take hold of you and never let go! Can't wait for book two!
The Binding: Chronicles of Azaria What do you do when you can't trust your heart? All seventeen year-old Eliza Bryant wants is to avoid a Binding— the ancient spell that forces couples into a lifelong bond. It cursed her sister, and for the last two years it’s tried to claim her, too. Her monthly hiding ritual worked brilliantly, until the night she ran into Ryan, a mysterious bounty-hunter. Now Bound to him, Eliza must spend every moment at his side, else she’ll transform into an Unbound a lifeless husk without mind or soul. Unfortunately, Ryan’s not looking to settle, and Eliza is dragged into his crazy life on the run. Still, she’s not going to take this lying down.
The Assassin and the Underworld: A Throne of Glass Novella This is the 3rd novella of the series I have read and by far my favorite. I am looking forward to the release of Throne of Glass book 1 August 7th and these are a nice way to help ease the pain of waiting for the book release :) Worth every single penny of the $.99 I paid. Read it (In order,) you will not regret it!!
The Assassin and the Pirate Lord: A Throne of Glass Novella If you want a swashbuckling story that will suck you in, toss you around and send you stumbling out the end cheering, this one's for you. It's a heap of fun, and the start of something very special!
The Assassin and the Empire: A Throne of Glass Novella As fans of this series will know, THE ASSASSIN AND THE EMPIRE is the fourth and final novella before the release of THRONE OF GLASS. This novella is by far my favorite of the four however, it is a heartbreaking and depressing read. I knew these novellas weren't going to have a happy ending, but I didn't think that it could be quite this bad. It's a huge departure from the lighthearted tone of THE ASSASSIN AND THE PIRATE LORD, and although it's much darker and heavier than any of the previous novellas, in my mind that makes it all the more powerful.
The Assassin and the Desert: A Throne of Glass Novella There's so much more I want to say, but I think you'd all just get sick of me obsessing and throwing around as many adjectives as I can describing how much I love Sarah J. Maas's writing. If you haven't read The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, pick it up and read it now, followed by the Assassin and the Desert. I don't think I need to tell those who have already read the first novella to pick up this one I think the first novella can speak for itself. Definitely a five out of five.
The Antelope Wife With each book, my admiration grows for this writer. Her attention to detail, characterizations, interweaving of mysticism and reality and with all, an original dash of humor laced with sadness. As with Burning Tales of Love, she
weaves many disparate threads together, creating a narrative blanket that you never want to unwrap from. I've read everything she's written, and in this day when prizes such as the National Book Award mean so much in sales and recognition, it amazes me that her work isn't at least among the finalists.
The Aftermath I read this book in two sittings and was enthralled by the story and the characters. Brook is a master story teller and his prose is perfect. I knew nothing of the conditions that existed in Germany post WW2 and was duly educated as I read. Just what I love in a book!
Temporary Arrangement (The Renaldis) Alone and broke, Paige Stewart can't believe her good luck. Who hires a virtual stranger out of a New York City coffee shop to care for their adorable grandson? Apparently Claudia Renaldi does. Widower Matteo Renaldi isn't pleased that his mother found a replacement nanny so soon after he fired the last one. Yet little Matty takes to Paige like no other nanny before. And Matteo can't deny he's quite taken with her as well. She's beautiful. Sweet. And far, far too young for him.
Take Care, Sara What a beautiful and heartbreaking story...loved it and couldn't stop reading it! Looking forward to reading more from you! You are a talented writer!
Sweet Revenge: A Nemesis Unlimited Novel The romance is a significant, but not overwhelming, part of the novel. Jack and Eva are sweet and fiery at the same time. I enjoyed watching the sparks fly between them, and I loved how each character encouraged the other to embrace at part of them that makes them a better individual. And no love triangle! Yay!
Sweet Restraint At 38 years of age, Shane "Dom" Dominic has climbed rapidly up ranks of the FBI to be `Special Agent In Charge' of `Operation Serve and Protect', an investigation into the largest organized police theft ring in known history. The FBI uncovered evidence that indicates the corruption stretches back at least 10 years and involves senior officers in the Chicago Police Department.
Swallowing Stones Meet 17 year old Michael. He has everything, a good girlfriend, nice friends, and a grandfather who just gave him a really cool birthday gift: a riffle. But when Michael and his friend decide to shoot off the gun in his backyard, Michael's life will change forever. Swallowing Stones by Joyce McDonald is a realistic-fiction book that follows this young boy throughout his problems and the decisions he has to make because of this one shot.
Scream Street: Skull of the Skeleton None other than the Headless Horseman, the world’s most famous ghost, is appearing at Everwell’s Emporium to launch his new perfume, “Decapitation pour l’Homme.” Unfortunately, the celebrity’s head is stolen during the event, and his overbearing gargoyle manager is not amused. Eefa Everwell recruits Luke, Resus, and Cleo to help with the search, but Luke is on a headhunt of his own: he’s searching for a skull left behind by Scream Street’s first skeleton resident. Of course, Sir Otto Sneer is determined to thwart the trio and when he launches a Frankenstein-esque monster, it’s all they can do to keep their own heads!
Stolen (Lucy Kincaid) This book, like all of Allison Brennen's, was outstanding! It was fast paced, action packed, and just emotional enough to keep you on the edge of your seat-waiting to see what happened next! I can't ever put her books down! I liked that this was one of the longer books in this series-just wish it didnt take so long for the next one to come out! Even though it will be better than the last- which is difficult considering they are all great!!! This entire series is a definite must read! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Spirit Binder: The Cascadian Chronicles I read this book in one sitting, and no it isn't short, but it's so good. I would classify it more on the fantasy side, with a distopian feel. And I would say its cool for YA on the mature side. There isn't any sex scenes but some scenes are a little graphic & there's some torture situations.
Scream Street: Rampage of the Goblins This time Luke, Resus and Cleo find themselves in Egypt, on the hunt for their old friend Heru, to return his heart. However, what they hadn't reckoned on was their old enemies the goblins getting there first! Intent on stealing the
priceless treasure from the ancient mummy’s resting place, the goblins are wreaking havoc – and if Luke and his friends don’t stop them, the mighty curse of the pharaohs will be unleashed…
Speak Now Rather than a good vs. evil theme, Speak Now explores right vs. wrong in a situation where emotions are trying to take the lead. Jonathan struggles to balance his roles of father and businessman with his conflicting emotions of grief for the wife who died too young and love for the very different woman who would take her place. Cara is a very confident young woman who struggles with body image, yet is very secure in the other areas of her life. Both are very caring and considerate characters, thinking of the needs of others and responding to them.
Scream Street: Heart of the Mummy Scream Street has been shrouded in night for as long as anyone can remember. But things really look black when millions of spiders escape and cover everything with their suffocating webs. Luke Watson (boy-turned-werewolf), vampire Resus, and mummy Cleo are trying to combat the creepy-crawlies as they search for the third relic Luke needs to take his parents home - the heart of an ancient mummy. But Sir Otto is determined to fight them every step of the way!
Shield of Sea and Space I can't recommend this series enough for anyone who's at all interested in fantasy. Her world is magical, lush, deep and feels bigger than just these stories. While this series is now at an end, I can only hope that Hoffman at some point in the future returns to this world to do more.
Scream Street: Flesh of the Zombie Deadstock, the world’s greatest zombie rock festival, is coming to Scream Street! Too bad Sir Otto Sneer is not in the mood for dancing and when he banishes the concert’s headliners, the fleshmetal band Brain Drain, to the evil Underlands, he causes a riot. Now if Luke and his pals want to restore peace to the neighborhood (and find the fourth relic they seek), they have no choice but to follow the band . . . into the darkest depths of the earth.
Scream Street: Claw of the Werewolf Luke is just one relic away from opening the doorway back to his own world and taking his parents away from the terrors of Scream Street! But this search threatens to plunge him into the most dangerous adventure yet. With the help of Resus and Cleo, Luke is desperately hunting for the claw of a werewolf — and in the process he learns something most unexpected about Samuel Skipstone, the author who has helped them so much on their quest. This forces the
trio into making a difficult decision, made harder by the witch convention taking place on Scream Street. The sixth relic is almost in Luke’s grasp, but will it ever be his?
Scream Street: Blood of the Witch What better way to feed the neighborhood vampires than to pipe blood from residents’ cuts and nosebleeds straight into kitchen taps? And how better to foil Luke’s mission to free his folks than to cut off this vital (if icky) blood supply to Luke’s best vampire friend? What’s more, the local sewer rats have been accidentally turned into raging vampire rodents. Now Luke and his pals must keep the critters at bay while searching for the second crucial relic a vial of witch’s blood while avoiding being turned into vampires themselves.
Rose Under Fire While flying an Allied fighter plane from Paris to England, American ATA pilot and amateur poet, Rose Justice, is captured by the Nazis and sent to Ravensbr ck, the notorious women's concentration camp. Trapped in horrific circumstances, Rose finds hope in the impossible through the loyalty, bravery and friendship of her fellow prisoners. But will that be enough to endure the fate that's in store for her?
Red Sparrow Highly recommended to those thriller readers willing to be patient enough to finish a book that will ultimately make them consider Red Sparrow to be among the better thrillers they are likely to read this year.
Reawakened: A Once Upon a Time Tale This book is just like watching the start of season one, except reading it. If you love the show, you will enjoy reading it just as much.
Ravenwing Excellent beginning to the new Dark Angels trilogy. Full of characters, detail and some hints of other things to come.
Privileged Very enthralling!!! Held my attention such that I finished it between Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. I do not regret my purchase...
The Way Back to Happiness I felt the rocky relationship between Bev and Alabama was well established. Poor Bev, despite years teaching them, has absolutely no idea how to relate day in and day out to a teenager, thoughI am not sure anyone really does. I loved how Alabama grew up and mature as the story progressed. Also. those of us old enough to remember, will love all the references to the 80?s! I would recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from this author.
The Unexpected Wedding Guest (Harlequin Kiss) Getting caught in her wedding dress by her drop-dead-gorgeous ex-husband is Reese Michael's worst nightmare. Especially when her perfect-on-paper fiance then cancels their wedding! Reese has spent years trying to forget how her marriage to Mason Hicks crashed and burned yes, their chemistry was incredible, but a girl can't live on lust alone! And what's a jilted bride supposed to do when the one man she could never forget is back in her life, as irresistible as ever? Mason might be her own personal brand of Kryptonite, but surely life is meant to be lived a little dangerously‌?
The Underside of Joy "The Underside of Joy" is a book with an emotional punch. Author Sere Prince Halverson's storytelling is straightforward, crystalline and effective. The story and the characters draw you in and shamelessly tug at your heartstrings and you won't mind that at all. You will relish as Ella does the small intimate moments with the kids. You will feel the same lurch Ella feels in her stomach as she wonders what Paige (the biological mother) is up to when she, unannounced, shows up at Joe's funeral, three years after she had walked out on him and the children.
The Song of the Siren (The Daughters of England)
Carlotta, the love child of Priscilla Eversleigh and Jocelyn Frinton, grows up in the shadow of war during the reign of Queen Anne. Carlotta’s personal struggle begins when she’s abducted by the charismatic Jacobite leader Lord Hessenfield. During her time as his hostage, they fall into a passionate affair. When she’s released, the pregnant Carlotta marries to save her daughter Clarissa’s legitimacy, but plunges into reckless affairs with other men including the man beloved by her half-sister, Damaris.
The Soldier Son Trilogy Bundle: Shaman's Crossing, Forest Mage, and Renegade's Magic Hobb has written a solid fantasy adventure, and not in the usual "ye-olde-england" setting. This story is set in an alternative universe based upon the American west with a native versus settler conflict. Her writing is skillful, characters well drawn and out of the ordinary, and her plot twists are truly surprising. The themes are thoughtprovoking how our received beliefs shape our behavior, how cultures misunderstand each other. She is a better writer than many in the fantasy genre, although not quite up to the level of Guy Gavriel Kaye (Under Heaven, Sailing to Byzantium). Definitely recommended by me.
The Shimmers in the Night The Shimmers in the Night is an enjoyable, young, children's story that can even be enjoyed by adults. It does seem that Lydia Millet has an anti-development message and its effects on the environment, but she goes about sharing her views in a such an imaginative and articulate way it did make this a very good story. The Shimmers int he Night was definitely written with the younger reader in mind.
The Salt Roads This book is full of symbolism (the incorporation of the value, taste, and healing power of salt, etc. throughout the novel is superb). It also has a mystical and esoteric feel to it the stories are heart wrenching and the characters are memorable. The author embellished a bit at times with the transcendental themes causing lapses that were very vague and abstract however for those who enjoy heavy, lyrical prose and surreal themes, it is worth picking up. Overall, it is a wonderfully imagined story that dabbles with the supernatural and issues of self-worth, survival, and redemption.
The Return of the Gypsy (The Daughters of England) From the moment the handsome, raffish stranger with the gold earring throws her a kiss, Jessica Frenshaw is enchanted. Rumored to be a half-Spanish wanderer who can predict the future, Romany Jake is unjustly put on trial for murder. After the verdict banishes him from England, Jessica despairs of ever seeing him again. But one fateful day, Jake Cadorson returns to reclaim what he has lost including the woman who saved him from the gallows.
The Porcupine Year
When Omakayas is twelve winters old, she and her family set off on a harrowing journey in search of a new home. Pushed to the brink of survival, Omakayas continues to learn from the land and the spirits around her, and she discovers that no matter where she is, or how she is living, she has the one thing she needs to carry her through.
The Outcast Prince This is no ordinary mirror. Caspian caught a hint of color, a whirl of a waltz just past his reflection a glimpse into the decadent Fairy Court of Annwyn. The home he could never have. It called to him, whispering temptation after temptation...if he could only reclaim his rightful heritage.
The Ogre of Oglefort All of Ms Ibbotson's books are unique. The only consistent is the high quality of the writing and always interesting characters and places. Ogre of Oglefort was a hoot, a completely different take on an Ogre.
The Moon and More Okay, the family is great too. Emaline's problem isn't that her family is awful. They're a perfectly normal family. But people in perfectly normal families drive each other batty all the time. There is a particularly big personality clash between Emaline and her oldest sister, mostly because they're more alike than they realize.
The Miracle at St. Bruno's (The Daughters of England) The pulsing question underneath all the excellent historical entertainment is Will Damask find love and come to some peace in her life? Or is it even possible to find happiness in such a turbulent time in history? Readers will not find a typical answer, OR a typical ending. Richly entertaining with believable, lovable (and sinister) characters! MANY a twist and turn to carry you along.
The Mask of Atreus I enjoy archeological/historical thrillers very much, but unfortunatly many of the ones out there are plagued with shoddy characterization, and really poor plotting. I was very glad to pick up this book, and discover not only a fastmoving story, but a female lead who is genuinely tough-minded in a very realistic way. She doesn't spend the book as
a sidekick, a damsel in distress, or a mere decoration while an Indiana-Jones type does all the heavy lifting, and that's something I really cherish.
The Mall it isn't just about a pair of loners dodging monsters for fear of their lives, it is about the very seductive possibility that they start to like it. The altered reality setting is a nightmarish place but it gives Dan and Rhoda the chance to be heroes (or, at the very least, to be the center of attention). Like the Morgan and Lansdale books mentioned above, The Mall transcends being an ordinary dystopian tale: it isn't about the horror of the setting, it is about its temptation. For all The Mall's blackly comedic trappings and the play of the "gross-out", it is a deadly serious novel about what human beings can (and will) do when they're truly desperate. What if we're not all heroes at the core? What if we're just people?
The Listeners This is an absolutely amazing piece of literature. Original, powerful, dark, human, visceral as well as quite funny. Give yourself the gift of experiencing this book. I HIGHLY recommend it. It lingers with me.
The Lion Triumphant (The Daughters of England) This is a bit darker storyline than Holt's gothic. There is violence, and manipulations, and acceptances. This isn't a typical romance, and you're really not sure who to be rooting for. But overall, I was engrossed and engaged... and enjoyed it!
The Kill Room (Lincoln Rhyme) Overall, THE KILL ROOM is a great read. Deaver still delivers, and Lincoln Rhyme is still - after ten books - my favorite investigator. I recommend this highly to Deaver's fans. If you're new to Deaver, you might want to read THE BONE COLLECTOR first, since that's where Rhyme and Sachs are first introduced. But this one actually could stand alone. There's enough background here to make the novel accessible to newcomers. If you like intelligent, fast-paced thrillers, THE KILL ROOM won't disappoint.
The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby This is a collection of short tales about contemporary New York and America written in the early 1960s. As you might expect, Wolfe is a little more rough around the edges here, and so there is a little hit and miss. However, The Last
American Hero, about driver Junior Johnson and the early beginnings of NASCAR, is breathtaking - here are the true buds of Wolfe's ideas on American Masculinity that were to flower in The Right Stuff.
The Junkie Quatrain After writing Ex-Heroes and Ex-Patriots, Peter Clines proved that he can pull off mixing super-heroes and zombies in a post-apocalypse setting, but The Junkie Quatrain proves he can write awesome PA fiction, period. Not only does he know how to create thrilling suspense situations, Clines also has an impressive talent for manipulating POVs, carefully crafting detailed pieces of a four-dimensional puzzle...The Junkies Quatrain will leave readers begging for another fix.
The Gossamer Cord (The Daughters of England) Loved it, as I have every book in the series. I read the first more than 30 years ago and they've aged well.
The Gods of Dream: An Epic Fantasy Daniel Arenson's The Gods of Dream is a marvelous tale of two war-torn orphans whose lives are turned upside down when a hawk named Windwhisper comes to them for help. Windwhisper tells them that the land of Dream is in dire trouble, and only the orphans can save it. Dream is the land where humans' dreams come from. Sitting alongside of Dream is Nightmare. If Nightmare, ruled by Phobetor, takes control of Dream, those of Earth will die from their nightmares.
The Drought The Drought was fast paced and gripped me from the very first chapter. Patricia Fulton has a Stephen King style of writing that moves you between two protagonists, one in a town in Texas and one in Louisiana. You know that somehow these two worlds will collide but the twists and turns that bring them together will keep you reading late into the night.
The Drop of the Dice (The Daughters of England) Clarissa Field never knew her mother, but hears whispers that she was a notorious femme fatale. Unknowingly, the girl follows her mother’s passionate path and loses her heart to Jacobite rebel Dickon Frenshaw. But 1715 England is a dangerous place to be a young woman in love. Dickon is caught and exiled to Virginia, and Clarissa is married off to rakish soldier Lance Clavering.
Zane No woman walks away from Zane Westmoreland. But when Channing Hastings does just that, it leaves the rancher reeling—and then she returns to town, engaged! Zane will do whatever it takes to show her that there is no man for her but him.
What a Wicked Earl Wants Laura and Bell's romance was a fun journey to read. I really adored Andrew. He was haughty and blunt but that was all due to the fact he was afraid to let himself fall in love again because he didn't want to lose those he loved again, like his mother, father and brother. When he realized he had recreated a family with Laura, he, of course, reacts badly. He knows Laura needs to be needed and he is not sure he can do that for her. The romance grows from a friendship into something more and is very sigh-worthy. I liked how Laura's stepson is very much part of the story and hopefully we will see his own story someday, after he grows up a bit more.

Your Career as a Fashion Designer English | 2013 | ASIN: B00BE9K0JC | ISBN-10: 158511099X | 30 pages | PDF | 3 MB A CAREER AS A FASHION DESIGNER begins in your imagination. Are you a person who looks at clothing, shoes and hats as they pass by and imagine another way that they might have been made to look, a different color, perhaps, or another fabric choice, or a change in emphasis of some feature? Do you look at the world around you and see the pattern of shadows a fence casts on a wall and picture a coat with that same pattern? Do you notice the color of the sky on a late afternoon in summer just as storm clouds move to cover the sun and think what an elegant shade that would be for a shirt? Do you feel how comfortable to the touch is the wood used in the benches at a railway station? Imagine how excellent it would be to have buttons made with the same kind of wood? If these are typical of the types of thoughts that go through your mind, then you are on the right track when it comes to considering a career as a fashion designer. This is not an easy career by any means. It is a highly competitive category with many ego-driven participants, some with dreams of glory that may make them less than pleasant to be around, much less work with. Nevertheless, there are many kind, creative, and cooperative people in the industry, which is a good thing since so much of what goes into the development and marketing of new fashion designs is a team effort. If you know you were born to be a fashion designer then you should consider getting the best training you can find so that the gifts you have can be developed to their fullest. Of course, it is possible to have a career as a fashion designer without a formal education, but there is much to be learned in a college or technical school program, including how to prepare a portfolio, the necessary steps to landing a job or, if you are determined to be your own boss, to win the confidence of potential clients. In fact, one of the earliest decisions you will likely make as a would-be fashion designer is whether you are going to seek employment with a manufacturer, or whether you plan to go out on your own. About a third of all fashion designers are self-employed, meaning they have their own shops or companies where they sell their own designs, and perhaps some creations of friends and colleagues. These independent fashion designers can also work on a contract basis for apparel manufacturers. It is possible that until your career takes off, you will have to do other work to support yourself while moving toward your goals. Within the fashion industry there are opportunities to work with established designers as an intern or an assistant. If you have the skills, you can work as a fashion illustrator or in construction, sewing garments, or in the business end of fashion design, helping to set up displays and shows. Whatever you can do to get your foot in the door is worthwhile in this competitive field. This new Careers Ebook contains a wealth of unbiased information about an occupational field, based on the latest national surveys. Careers Ebooks cover attractive and unattractive sides, opportunities, education necessary, personal qualifications required, earnings, descriptions of different job specialties, first person accounts by those in the field, and how to get started; including practical advice on what to do now. There are live links to schools and colleges, associations, periodicals and other sources of reliable information.

The Axe and the Oath: Ordinary Life in the Middle Ages 2010 | ISBN 0691143129 | 400 pages | PDF | 3,9 MB In The Axe and the Oath, one of the world's leading medieval historians presents a compelling picture of daily life in the Middle Ages as it was experienced by ordinary people. Writing for general readers, Robert Fossier vividly describes how these vulnerable people confronted life, from birth to death, including childhood, marriage, work, sex, food, illness, religion, and the natural world. While most histories of the period focus on the ideas and actions of the few who wielded power and stress how different medieval people were from us, Fossier concentrates on the other nine-tenths of humanity in the period and concludes that "medieval man is us." Drawing on a broad range of evidence, Fossier describes how medieval men and women encountered, coped with, and understood the basic material facts of their lives. We learn how people related to agriculture, animals, the weather, the forest, and the sea; how they used alcohol and drugs; and how they buried their dead. But The Axe and the Oath is about much more than simply the material demands of life. We also learn how ordinary people experienced the social, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of medieval life, from memory and imagination to writing and the Church. The result is a sweeping new vision of the Middle Ages that will entertain and enlighten readers.

Al-Qaeda: The True Story of Radical Islam ISBN: 0141031360 | 2009 | EPUB | 416 pages | 3 MB Award-winning reporter Jason Burke shows how the threat from Islamic terrorism comes not from a single criminal mastermind, or even from one group. In this revealing account, he characterizes it is a broad movement with profound roots in the politics, societies and history of the Islamic world. Using hundreds of interviews and thousands of documents, Burke shows how "Al-Qaeda" is a convenient label applied misleadingly to a diverse, disorganized global movement dedicated to fighting a "cosmic battle" with the West. This is the definitive account of the mysterious organization, retelling its story from scratch and challenging many myths that threaten the very foundations of the "War on Terror."

The Probability of God: A Simple Calculation That Proves the Ultimate Truth English | 2004 | ISBN: 1400054788 | English | 272 pages | MOBI | 1 MB Does God exist? This is probably the most debated question in the history of mankind. Scholars, scientists, and philosophers have spent their lifetimes trying to prove or disprove the existence of God, only to have their theories crucified by other scholars, scientists, and philosophers. Where the debate breaks down is in the ambiguities and colloquialisms of language. But, by using a universal, unambiguous language—namely, mathematics—can this question finally be answered definitively? That’s what Dr. Stephen Unwin attempts to do in this riveting, accessible, and witty book, The Probability of God. At its core, this groundbreaking book reveals how a math equation developed more than 200 years ago by noted European philosopher Thomas Bayes can be used to calculate the probability that God exists. The equation itself is much more complicated than a simple coin toss (heads, He’s up there running the show; tails, He’s not). Yet Dr. Unwin writes with a clarity that makes his mathematical proof easy for even the nonmathematician to understand and a verve that makes his book a delight to read. Leading you carefully through each step in his argument, he demonstrates in the end that God does indeed exist. Whether you’re a devout believer and agree with Dr. Unwin’s proof or are unsure about all things divine, you will find this provocative book enlightening and engaging.

Private Prisons: Cons and Pros English | July 26, 1990 | ISBN-10: 0195063538 | 328 pages | PDF | 14.4 MB
American prisons and jails are overflowing with inmates. To relieve the pressure, courts have imposed fines on overcrowded facilities and fiscally strapped governments have been forced to release numerous prisoners prematurely. In this study, noted criminologist Charles Logan makes the case for commercial operation of prisons and jails as an alternative to the government's monopoly. On philosophical, economic, legal, and practical grounds, Logan argues a compelling case for the private and commercial operation of prisons. He critically examines all objections raised by opponents, and concludes that while private prisons face many potential problems, they do so primarily because they are prisons, not because they are private.
