The Rehearsal The author displays a talent and style which will not be overlooked. We are introduced to Stanley, a high-school graduate newly accepted into drama school and Isolde, a character whose under aged sister has been involved with the school music teacher. A collection of interesting characters surround these two including a saxophone teacher and her female students, one of which is Isolde. It is such a clever story-line with realistic, well developed characters. It is a novel you will want to pass on to friends and family, highly recommended for book clubs as there is a lot to discuss.Seek it out and you will be rewarded.
The Secrets of the FBI The most interesting part of Kessler's book covered how former director Hoover (48 years) built secret files in his office with sensitive information about celebrities and political leaders. Hoover made certain that those he had information on knew what the files contained on them. The book contains a number of examples of who was targeted (eg. Robert Kennedy and his relationship with Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King), what was contained, and how the information was fed back to the targeted individual. Ironically, columnist Jack Anderson in turn publicly scandalized Hoover in columns after rifling through the director's garbage more seriously, it turns out that Hoover also abused his position - having employees build a front porch, fish pond, and rear deck on his home, as well as prepare his tax returns and ghost-write 'Masters of Deceit' for him.
Those Across the River The first two-thirds are close to HP Lovecraft in overall feel (and Faulkner in writing style). The reader knows there's something bad going on, but the point of the novel is what the reader expects to be the horrific reveal, as ancient secrets come to light, and the narrator falls victim to curses, blood, destiny, etc. But, as for the big reveal...I was kind of meh about it. Let me put it this way - Buehlman sets up an expectation of supernatural horror based on the bad luck of bloodlines, but the real ending doesn't connect those dots in a unique way, and it sort of devolves into conventional Grand Guignol. Bit of a letdown after an excellent build-up.
Tracking Time Features Detective Sergeant April Woo suceeds not only as a thrilling suspense novel but a disturbing look at today's society. April takes on the whole department as she searches for missing psychoanalytic student Maslow Atkins and uncovers shocking family secrets and teen violence right out of today's headlines. Tracking Time is well-plotted with the added dimension and depth of well sketched characters and relationships that keeps you turning the page.
Underground Underground is a cautionary tale in which Andrew McGahan describes an all too foreseeable Australian future with black humour and wry cynicism. The back cover describes this, McGahan’s latest offering, as “the book that at least half the country has been waiting for”, and that was certainly what I felt as I read it. Finally someone has articulated all of the doubts many Australians have been feeling about the direction that is being taken by the US and by this country as they wage the war on terror. McGahan brings into sharp relief the ways in which taking ‘necessary’ measures against extremism becomes a process of chipping away at the civil liberties and fundamental freedoms of our own citizens. McGahan doesn’t get on his soapbox in this novel, however. The book is a good read: it’s entertaining and funny, and while it presents a depressing vision of the future, it’s done in a way that leaves the reader feeling that all is not lost. The story is told by Leo James, a failed property developer of questionable ethics who happens to be the wayward brother of the Australian Prime Minister (who appears to be modelled on the current PM, but without the sense of humour). Leo is not an activist, nor even a particularly concerned citizen, but after being kidnapped by terrorists he comes face to face with the evils of the current administration, and with the underground resistance movement fighting a valiant but apparently losing battle against them. McGahan warns against neo-conservatism and political correctness by way of Leo’s satirical and irreverent view of his world and the circumstances in which he finds himself.

Verdict in Blood: A Joanne Kilbourn Mystery Gail Bowen has done it again! Political Science professor/sleuth Joanne Kilbourn, in the latest in this excellent series from Canada, has a full plate, indeed. She manages to lead a full life with all its joy and despair. She's a "real" person as I mentioned in a review of an earlier work of Bowen's, one of the rewards, for me, in this series is watching the growth and development of "true" people. The protagonist and her family and friends come alive for this reader, and they don't stay stuck in one time slot book after book.
Warlord: An Action Novel An utterly gripping thriller that sees former cavalry Major turned hardened mercenary Alex DevereuX plunged into conflict in the dark heart of Africa, as he battles the dominant militia in the Congo. China intends to take over the Kivu region in The Democratic Republic of Congo, a tribal slaughterhouse of rival militias who are butchering the local population and fighting over mineral resources. Alex's mission is to defeat the dominant militia, the FDLR. But details of how Kivu will be governed under the new order are sketchy and Alex must run the gamut of the United Nations, the Congolese army and the clash of superpower claims on the region. Alex knows that the plan is risky.
Weaveworld Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.
Wild Child: And Other Stories Throughout, Boyle offers readers keen observations and robust storytelling. Frequently, his stories seem infused with the landscapes of California and South America. Just as often, though, they take place in a geographically generic suburban environment that could be anywhere. Contrasting the extreme, often violent realms of the natural world with the sterile, controlling, lifeless human environment results in powerful commentaries and indelible images - exactly what the short story is best designed for.
Young Fredle
Fredle is a house mouse, bound by specific rules designed by his community to keep them safe. But when he breaks the rules and ends up "outside," he discovers there is a lot more to life than just being safe. This is a sweet, enjoyable book that take you into the animal side of the farm . . .

Ghostgirl: Lovesick The wait was well worth it. The Ghostgirl Trilogy is so much fun to read and brings back so many memories of high school. I would recommend this book for anyone.
Marmee & Louisa Louisa May Alcott was one of the most successful and bestselling authors of her day, earning more than any of her male contemporaries. Her classic Little Women has been a mainstay of American literature since its release nearly 150 years ago, as Jo March and her calm, beloved “Marmee” have shaped and inspired generations of young women. Biographers have consistently attributed Louisa’s uncommon success to her father, Bronson Alcott, assuming that this outspoken idealist was the source of his daughter’s progressive thinking and remarkable independence.
Means of Evil and Other Stories This is a very, very good short story collection. Each of the stories within is a little gem of detective fiction./ they are just as ingenious as any of her novels, the crimes just as compelling and the psychology just as accurate. the characters are well drawn and Wexford is on absolutely brilliant form. They are clever, incredibly enjoyable, and unguessable. They are an excellent showcase of all Rendell's talents, and i would reccomend this short story collection to any fan of detective fiction. Enjoyment is guaranteed.
Poseidon's Arrow I have read every one of the Dirk Pitt adventures and look forward to the next. Congratulations Clive Cussler for another well written exciting adventure
Secrets After Dark This book was a complete roller coaster of a ride. I loved every dark sensual twist ans turn. I was trying to to race through to find out what happens. Its not any easy road for either of the main characters and the end may not be a happy one. I can't wait for the next book!!!!
Secrets of the Dead The utterly compelling new thriller from the author of The Lazarus Vault. To reach the living, navigate the dead. In a villa on the coast of Montenegro, Abby Cormac witnesses the brutal murder of her lover, diplomat Michael Lascaris. The last thing she remembers is a gun pointed directly at her. She wakes to find herself at the centre of a diplomatic nightmare. Everyone wants an answer but no one wants to listen. Even her employers at the Foreign Office believe she's hiding something. The Art Forger The next layer involves an intriguing look at the world of art and the techniques utilized by the old masters as well as the methods employed by those who forge their works. We also get an inside peek at the "experts" - those who attest to the validity of particular works of art and ascribe a value to one artists work over that of another. All these portions of the book have a basis in fact. Then we have the portion involving Ms. Shapiro's vivid imagination and her very own artistic creations - Isaac Cullion, Claire Roth, Aiden Markel, Isabella Stewart Gardner, Mike Dannow, Richard "Rik"
Gramont, and others whose presence and personalities add the multiple layers of vibrancy and color to form a cohesive work of "literary art".
The Bar Code Prophecy I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Its pretty short, only about 200 pages, but a very exciting read. The story is of a 17 year old girl, who lives about 20 or so years in the future, where a huge company has designed bar codes for every person to have. The barcodes have all your personal information, your genes, your intelligence level, etc. But also, they inset little nanobots to track your whereabouts and even kill you if they want.
The Brotherhood This is actually the first Jerry B. Jenkins book I have read and it absolutely captivated my interest from page one I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!. Boone's experiences bring to mind the old sports intro "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." How quickly life can go from one to the other in the blink of an eye. When Boone's world is rocked to the core, he isn't sure of anything anymore, especially what he thinks about God. His emotions and questions are raw and honest and pulsate throughout the novel. Woven throughout this fast-paced story of the battle against gangs and organized crime in Chicago is the story of an even bigger spiritual battle that Boone and all of us face, as well as the message that God freely offers forgiveness to all who call upon Him. As for the ending. . . well, let me just say that enough was resolved to tide me over until the next book in this series, and enough left dangling to leave me eager for more!
The Brutal Heart This time the feisty Saskatchewan reporter from Regina finds herself in the middle of a controversy with a local Conservative MP whose estranged husband has turned up dead at election time. Ginny Monaghan herself is at the centre of innuendos about her recent sexual escapades. The death of a high-priced call girl shocks this prairie city and reveals tangled roots. Who's on her extensive client list? With common sense and uncommon Canadian elan, Joanne juggles both family troubles and a new marriage with high-power lawyer Zack Shreve, a man whose wheelchair is a chariot of power.
The Dalai Lama's Cat I love me some anthropomorphism, and Michie pulls this off brilliantly. Both the premise and the writing are sharp, snappy, and clever the story is warm and fulfilling. The lessons in Buddhist principles are an added, wonderful bonus because Michie, an established authority on Buddhism, not only shares them but also illustrates them in lighthearted, everyday situations to which anyone can relate.

The Exploits of Moominpappa Moominpapa writes his memoirs recalling his childhood. He escapes from an orphanage and falls in with three friends who sail away on the Oshun Oxtra to have some fantastic adventures. Moominpapa writes about saving Moominmamma from drowning and there's a happy ending where we find all Moominpapa's friends are the fathers of Moomintrolls playmates. This book seems to be the same as Moominpapa's Memoirs.
The Girl Who Was on Fire: Your Favorite Authors on Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy If you love The Hunger Games, I can guarantee you'll love at least one piece in the book. My own favorite was the book's first essay "Why so hungry for the Hunger Games?" which examines which themes laced throughout the books really capture the imagination. It also delivers a wonderful analysis of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale separately as well as illuminating what each romance means in the larger picture of revolution-torn dystopia.
The Hammer of God (The Veil Series) For centuries, deep inside the bowels of the church, hidden from all except a few, a hauntingly evil cancer has spread like a murderous plague, destroying everything and everyone in its path. No one is exempt from its lure, and it will go to the depths of hell to accomplish one single goal at all costs. Global domination through a new world order. This cancer has a name: The Order of Asmodeus. Under a binding cloak of secrecy, a brother and sisterhood of handpicked servants have been chasing down The Order of Asmodeus for as long as the demonic sect has existed. Their mandate, root out the cancer and destroy it at every turn. Their name? Il Martello di Dio. The Hammer of God. When Robert Veil’s godson, Samuel, is kidnapped, he and his bounty hunting partner, the indomitable Nikki Thorne, delve deep into a cesspool of wickedness so diabolical, neither may make it out alive. All to save a boy from a fate worse than death, and to save the world from itself.
Tier One Wild: A Delta Force Novel Mr. Furys first two books were amazing and this one is no different. I would highly highly recommend this book and his other two to anyone looking for a exciting and all around great read. I really hope we keep getting more. Between Dalton Furry and Brad Taylor we are lucking out with badass authors. If they could talk Peter Blaber into writing again we would be set!

The Ruins of Lace Because of the multiple viewpoints and characters, the pacing is quite slow, especially in the beginning. The characters are slowly introduced and their connections to other characters is not clear. As the story progresses, threads begin to connect and the story pieces together. So, despite the slow nature, as the story came together, I found myself really enjoying the book. I appreciate how intricate this book is, and how the story parallels the lace that is central to the novel.
The Dragon Men: A Novel of the Clockwork Empire Now that Gavin has become a clockworker, infected by the only strain of the plague that Alice cannot cure, his time is running out as he slips further and further down the rabbit hole of his destroyed mind. Their only shot lies in making it to China in hopes that their own form of the clockworkers, Dragon Men hold the cure. But more than just time and distance lies in their way as the emperor of China has shut their borders to keep Alice's cure from taking away their Dragon Men and the technology they create. In an attempt to get across the border, the get sucked into a power struggle that could hold the very fate of the world in its hands and Gavin and Alice are the key to it all.
Watching the Dark: An Inspector Banks Novel I am a long-time fan of Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series, and this one did not disappoint. The story begins with the murder of detective inspector who is spending time in a police "retreat" after the death of his wife. It quickly turns into an intriguing story of people smuggling and the unsolved death of a young woman who had disappeared six years earlier in Tallinn, Estonia.
Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel
The book took off like a wild ride from page 1 and the action never stopped. I devoured this book at one setting. The characters were very believable and I was anxious to see what happened next. all-in-all a fun and exciting read. The only thing that I would like to have seen is an explanation given of why the animals were attacking.
When We Collide I loved that this book started from William's perspective and that it was mostly told from his POV. It's not often we get inside the head of the male main character but it definitely made this book. I loved William in all his closed off, heartbroken, tried to be tough on the outside, but really loving on this inside, self. I loved that even though he left his hometown, his heart never really left Maggie.

A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy Buergenthals' book is more than just a memoir it's also a book about learning to let go of hatred. He writes "we were forced to confront these emotions in a way that helped Mutti and me gradually overcome our hatred and desire for revenge. ... I doubt that we would have been able to preserve our sanity had we remained consumed by hatred for the rest of our lives.... while it was important not to forget what happened to us in the Holocaust, it was equally important not to hold the descendants of the perpetrators responsible for what was done to us, lest the cycle of hate and violence never end."
Blood Jewel 'Blood Jewel' is the second book in the Vampire Agape series. It focuses on Curry (a vampire) and Chansey (his Agape), who are destined to be together. It picks up easily where the first book in the series left off and weaves a tale of action, adventure, and romance. I really enjoyed the first book in the series, and I loved this book just as much. I liked the darker aspects that came into play with this novel - the dark magic, vampire cults, witches, etc. I thought it gave the series a deeper and more gothic paranormal feel, which I loved.
Collateral
Collateral is a fascinating look at the impact on loving relationships by the constant long periods of out of bed deployments and by what Cole mentally faces in a war zone. The storyline is leisurely paced with poetry written by both an intricate part of their partnering. At times overdramatic, readers will appreciate this deep look at the cost of endless war on a couple of marines and the women who love them.
December Britain secretly supports a planned coup/revolution by working with a Russian oil billionaire who plans on putting ex Russian football captain, Roman Raskolnikov in charge as a popular 'people's choice'. The trouble is, Raskolnikov is in a Russian gulag as a result of his liberal political views, and he will need extracting and moving to a Moscow TV station to make a 'call to revolution' broadcast. The British support is in the form of a small deniable mercenary team led by an ex Household Cavalry officer.... This is a gritty, tense and pacy thriller with plenty of action. The plus points are the fast pace and very realistic action. Also the author presents a very believable Russian psyche that explains the actions of those involved. The weaker points are around an unnecessary love interest and a main character that is not quite fleshed out enough. But it must be said that when this gets going, it really gets going and it was hard to put down. Despite it's minor flaws I'm giving this four stars because from the point that our mercenary team land in Russia, to the end of the book, the pace is relentless and totally gripping.
Demon Possession The supporting characters added another dimension to the story. All the personalities are so different and just as well developed as the two main characters. Calic is Sebastian's brother and is your typical womanizer, but I still loved him. Sonya is their sister and one of the funniest characters. She's carefree and likes to have fun, but is strong and can hold her own against just about anyone. Over all this book was great, and is one of the few book I would read over again. If you like paranormal romance, well developed story lines, and some steamy love scenes, then you are going to love this book.

Falling Under Falling Under is a fantastic debut novel. The story is beautifully written and there's plenty of suspense and intrigue. Falling Under is a highly addictive entry in the YA paranormal genre. I can hardly wait to fall Under the spell of the next installment.
Finn Family Moomintroll The author takes an informational tone sometimes offering footnotes on the Moomintroll homes or customs. The chapters are short tales that connect to one another which makes them ideal for reading aloud. (Think of the short chapter adventures of Paddington Bear as an analogy.) All of the fantastical things that occur are portrayed as perfectly normal in Moominland. What is most enticing about the tales are the charming illustrations and the feeling that reading about Moominland creates it is at once otherworldly and very much in tune with nature. While the adventures are exciting there is never a sense of overwhelming danger, which give the series gentleness. This volume involves the mysterious and potentially threatening Hobgoblin but even his interaction with the residents of Moominland turns out to be surprisingly generous.
In the Graveyard of Empires: America's War in Afghanistan First, why exactly is Afghanistan called the "Graveyard of Empires"? Jones begins his history with Alexander, extends it through the Persians, the British, the Russians and focuses finally on the U.S. His argument, in brief, is that Afghanistan is a tribal society with a "warrior" tradition. It has numerous ethnic groups with enduring and ancient rivalries. There are numerous languages. The borders were artifically drawn (by Britain the so-called, "Durand Line") and specifically created to divide various tribal groups to facilitate colonial control but create internecine friction. It lacks a history of a strong central government. It has a history of sustaining fractious warlords. It is Islamic. It is mountainous and surrounded by neighbors with a "interest" in the area and a penchant for meddling in Afghan affairs. It is (to cite another favorite trope), the land of "The Great Game". Due to this long and disputatious history, its hardly suprising that the U.S. did not receive bouquets of flowers and lots of "warm fuzzies" after the Taliban was booted from power.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, death, and hope in a Mumbai undercity (Audiobook) English | 2012 | ISBN: 0307934055 | MP3 | 453 MB From Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo, a landmark work of narrative nonfiction that tells the dramatic and sometimes heartbreaking story of families striving toward a better life in one of the 21st century's great, unequal cities. In this brilliantly written, fast-paced book, based on three years of uncompromising reporting, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human. Annawadi is a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport, and as India starts to prosper, Annawadians are electric with hope. Abdul, a reflective and enterprising Muslim teenager, sees "a fortune beyond counting" in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Asha, a woman of formidable wit and deep scars from a childhood in rural poverty, has identified an alternate route to the middle class: political corruption. With a little luck, her sensitive, beautiful daughter - Annawadi's "most-everything girl" - will soon become its first female college graduate. And even the poorest Annawadians, like Kalu, a fifteen-year-old scrap-metal thief, believe themselves inching closer to the good lives and good times they call "the full enjoy." But then Abdul the garbage sorter is falsely accused in a shocking tragedy; terror and a global recession rock the city; and suppressed tensions over religion, caste, sex, power and economic envy turn brutal. As the tenderest individual hopes intersect with the greatest global truths, the true contours of a competitive age are revealed. And so, too, are the imaginations and courage of the people of Annawadi. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects human beings to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers carries the reader headlong into one of the 21st century's hidden worlds, and into the lives of people impossible to forget.

How the Dog Became the Dog: From Wolves to Our Best Friends (Audiobook) English | 2011 | ISBN: 1452654255 | MP3 | 227 MB That the dog evolved from the wolf is an accepted fact of evolution and history, but the question of how wolf became dog has remained a mystery, obscured by myth and legend. How the Dog Became the Dog posits that dog was an evolutionary inevitability in the nature of the wolf and its human soul mate. The natural temperament and social
structure of humans and wolves are so similar that as soon as they met on the trail they recognized themselves in each other. Both are highly social, accomplished generalists, and creatures of habit capable of adapting - homebodies who like to wander. How the Dog Became the Dog presents "domestication" of the dog as a biological and cultural process that began in mutual cooperation and has taken a number of radical turns.

It is also one of the hardest aspects to learn. Student teachers, for example, often find it difficult to gauge how to pitch or pace a lesson. This book provides solutions. It not only provides easily understood practical ideas but also sets them in a coherent overall framework based on the ideas that planning and preparation are part of a total cyclical process involving pedagogy, curriculum, learning and assessment. Planning and preparation are personal matters related to an individual teacher but this does not mean that teachers cannot learn from each other or that thinking about planning and preparation is arbitrary. Coverage includes often neglected areas such as the affective curriculum, language across the curriculum, and homework.
