But when a string of bizarre murders erupts across several Manhattan hotels - perpetrated by a boy who seems to have an almost psychic ability to elude capture - NYPD Lieutenant D'Agosta asks his friend Pendergast for help. Reluctant at first, Pendergast soon discovers that the killings are a message from his wife's kidnappers. But why a message? And what does it mean? When the kidnappers strike again at those closest to Pendergast, the FBI agent, filled anew with vengeful fury, sets out to track down and destroy those responsible. His journey takes him deep into the trackless forests of South America, where he ultimately finds himself face to face with an old evil that - rather than having been eradicated - is stirring anew... and with potentially world-altering consequences.

Finding Magic Karen Marie Moning has called Stacia Kane’s Downside Ghosts series “dark, sexy urban fantasy at its finest.” Now, in this breathtakingly suspenseful eBook novella, Kane has written a prequel to her thrilling series. Before Chess Putnam was a magic-wielding Churchwitch, she was a student in the Church of Real Truth—with a keen sensitivity to magic, a strong rebellious streak, and a penchant for self-destruction. And in Finding Magic, a grisly ghost murder becomes Chess’s baptism of fire. When eighteen-year-old Chess Putnam is offered the chance to train with a special team of investigators known as the Black Squad, she feels torn. She’s never been a team player and hates how one male Inquisitor condescends to “the new kid.” But at her first bloody crime scene, she gets a taste for investigation—and is hooked on the high. Though the seasoned Inquisitors consider the series of ghost murders random events, Chess starts to detect a pattern. Is a psycho killer summoning ghosts from the City of Eternity and using them as murder weapons? As Chess gets closer to the dark truth, she puts herself in grave danger and risks losing everything she’s fought so hard for. Includes a special preview of Stacia Kane’s upcoming urban fantasy thriller, Chasing Magic!

From Light to Dark Eref is about to die. He sits at the End of Light World, accepting his stoning execution one rock at a time, until the impossible happens: the ground opens up beneath him, and he drops down into the unknown. There, he meets Caer, a kind-hearted girl from Dark World who saves his life. Together, the pair forms an unlikely and illegal bond that not even the strongest hatred can break. But can their connection bring down the evil institution that has kept Light World and Dark World at odds for hundreds of years? Praise for From Light to Dark “Irene Pynn has crafted an incredible world in From Light to Dark, a young adult fantasy with a Yin/Yang feel, mythological elements, and a "truth despite the cost" theme you won't be able to stop reading!" Meg Mims, awardwinning author of Double Crossing “This is romance at its most poignant, fantasy at its most thrilling. Caer and Eref are a heroine and hero with all the tragic nobility of Romeo and Juliet, and their struggle to survive the many dangers of their exotic worlds is emotional, exciting and ultimately inspiring. It's a book you'll remember long after it's over, as you dream of Liber Flowers and the soft blue glow of Moonstone.” Kathleen O’Brien, author of The Cost of Silence and The Vineyard of Hopes and Dreams. "From the moment Eref drops through Dark World's portal in a last-ditch attempt to escape his execution in Light World, readers are immersed in dichotomous realms that mirror our world, and the human condition. Pynn's narrative is engrossing and well-crafted. A must read." Lori Pollard-Johnson, author of The Lie, Toxic Torte, The Truth Test and Recipe For a Rebel Praise for Irene L. Pynn “Irene L. Pynn is a phenomenal storyteller who immerses the reader in the thick tapestry of her extraordinary worlds. Again, we are introduced to a fantasy author who plunges our senses into stories that spirit us away from the daily grind and transport us into realms where honor builds heroes, beauty is birthed from dignity, and magic solves our problems. Reading Pynn isn't a pastime, it's a life choice." Ron Gavalik, author of the Grit City emotobook series.
Political Suicide "Political Suicide" is the latest entry in the Doctor Lou Welcome series of medical/political thrillers by international bestselling author Michael Palmer, M.D. This one lists somewhat more heavily to the political than the medical, and is,
appropriately, set in and around Washington, D.C. It follows on the heels of Oath of Office, which I have read, liked, and reviewed in these pages. Dr. Welcome is called by his longtime friend Dr. Gary McHugh, who is known around Washington, D.C. as the "society doc." McHugh is a client of Welcome's at the local Medical Society Physicians Health Service office, where Welcome has a part-time job counseling physicians with problems of mental illness, physical illness, behavioral issues, and/or chemical dependency. McHugh, who has not been following the protocols laid down for him, is in a panicked state he is certain he will soon be arrested for murder. He was found in an alcoholic blackout in his wrecked car near the home of a patient, close to a river. This, soon after he had visited that patient, the powerful Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Elias Colston. And right after McHugh left, Colston's wife Jeanine, with whom McHugh had been carrying on an affair, returned home to find her husband shot to death in their garage. McHugh has no recollection of committing the crime. But he certainly had motive and opportunity, and he might have ditched the gun in the river by which he is found. Few would believe in the innocence of the accused, aside from Welcome and ambitious lawyer Sara Cooper certainly not the local police. And, as Welcome discovers more in his investigations, even he feels some serious doubts. The author has previously penned 17 medical suspense novels, which were all international bestsellers, and were translated into 35 languages. Furthermore, the New England based writer is an associate director of the Massachusetts Medical Society Physician Health Services. Palmer writes well, and does a good job of summoning up America's capital city, its political pastimes, and its surrounds. He's no slouch at summoning up the military, either. He's given us a tight, information-packed, fast-paced thriller here, largely based around the military and politics, as I've previously noted, but with a smattering of medical content: most readers will find it a real page turner, and maybe learn a bit too. Good going, Dr. Palmer.

Death du Jour Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs exploded onto bestseller lists worldwide with her phenomenal debut novel Deja Dead and introduced "[a] brilliant heroine" (Glamour) in league with Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta. Dr. Temperance Brennan, Quebec's director of forensic anthropology, now returns in a thrilling new investigation into the secrets of the dead. In the bitter cold of a Montreal winter, Tempe Brennan is digging for a corpse buried more than a century ago. Although Tempe thrives on such enigmas from the past, it's a chain of contemporary deaths and disappearances that has seized her attention and she alone is ideally placed to make a chilling connection among the seemingly unrelated events. At the crime scene, at the morgue, and in the lab, Tempe probes a mystery that sweeps from a deadly Quebec fire to startling discoveries in the Carolinas, and culminates in Montreal with a terrifying showdown a nerve-shattering test of both her forensic expertise and her skills for survival.
Heart of Darkness: A Thriller I would like to address myself specifically to the Norton Critical Edition of this book. The difficulty that many readers face when they pick up a classic, pre-twentieth century novel is that they are not conversant with the history of the times in which it was written. Heart of Darkness can be enjoyed purely as a well written novella, but then you miss so much of what Conrad is trying to say not only regarding the thin veneer of man's social persona (ala Lord of the Flies) but about the evils of 19th century imperialism. What is the story of Colonialism? Do Conrad's derogatory remarks about Blacks make him a bigot? What were Conrad's overall views on life? What were Conrad's personal experiences in the Congo? What did readers think of Heart of Darkness when it was written, and what do the critics think of it today?

The Ice House With this stunning debut--a marvelous marriage of classic convention and contemporary sophistication--Minette Walters sets a new standard of excellence for the mystery novel. The three women living in seclusion at an elegant Hampshire country house have long been fodder for village gossip...even whispers of a witches' coven. So when a faceless corpse of uncertain vintage is found in the Streech Grange ice house, Chief Inspector Walsh can't wait to make a case of it.
Lady of the manor Phoebe Maybury, still haunted by Walsh's relentless investigation of her husband's strange disappearance ten years ago, is calm. She and her two housemates--sensitive, charming artist Diana Goode and pretty, earthy Anne Cattrell--seem as puzzled as the police. But do they have something to hide? While Walsh strives to nail Phoebe for murder, sexy young Detective Sergeant McLoughlin turns his attention to the exasperating and magnetic Anne. Soon his inquiry and his impulses will draw him into a tangled thicket of love, loyalty, and deadly intrigue.
The Last Dance In this city, you can get anything done for a price. If you want someone's eyeglasses smashed, it'll cost you a subway token. You want his fingernails pulled out? His legs broken? You want him hurt so bad he's an invalid his whole life? You want him...killed? Let me talk to someone. It can be done. The hanging death of a nondescript old man in a shabby little apartment in a meager section of the 87th Precinct is nothing much in this city, especially to detectives Carella and Meyer. But everyone has a story, and this old man's story stood to make some people a lot of money. His story takes Carella, Meyer, Brown, and Weeks on a search through Isola's seedy strip clubs and to the bright lights of the theater district. There they discover an upcoming musical with ties to a mysterious drug and a killer who stays until the last dance.
The Memory Chalet Selected by The New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of the Year Final reflections on a happy life-from acclaimed historian Tony Judt. Tony Judt's The Memory Chalet is a memoir unlike any other. Each essay brings the smallest details of personal experience into the larger frame of history. Judt's youthful love of a London bus route becomes a reflection on public civility. Food and trains and smells all come alive as Judt takes us from the postwar London of his childhood through Paris, Prague, and points east to New York, where he found his home. Judt brings his moral clarity and wit to bear on everything from fast cars to radical politics and, finally, the devastating illness that took his life. This book, composed
when Judt was paralyzed and unable physically to write, found its shape in the ordered rooms of a Swiss Chalet of the mind: a warm refuge in the closing darkness of his final years.

Death in Venice A staid German author is suddenly inspired through the sight of a stranger to travel and selects Venice as his destination. Once he is there he becomes obsessed with a young boy he spies on the beach and begins stalking him as the city is being stalked by cholera. This is a taut psychological examination of obsession and the uncharacteristic behavior a person can be driven to under it's influence.

Emily Goes to Exeter In "Emily Goes to Exeter" we are introduced to Miss Hannah Pym, a former housekeeper who has come into a small inheritance and decided to use her money on her life-long ambition. All her life she has watched the "Flying Machine" pass by her window, and finally she will have the chance of her own for Adventure! For Living Life! I thought this was one of Marion Chesney's best books, Miss Hannah comes across as a very vivid and sympathetic character, and we are caught up in her until-now dull life, the sad life of her former employees, and finally her chance for adventure. Nor does Ms. Chesney let her down, as in page after page, there is never a dull moment!
Hatter The writing is as clean as always and though I had a vague idea of where the story was going, there were still plenty of surprises along the way. HATTA is another great book for young adults to read if they want a taste of a fantastical realm with real depth and imagery. Daniel Coleman paints a picture of human nature within each character that is spot on.
Heretics
Gets four and a half because of five through no fault of Gifune's the editor at Delirium seems to have gotten drowsy towards the end of the book, and there are some really odd typos (there's quite a few underlines, of all things, peppered throughout the final story one every six or seven pages). But make no mistake, this book is the real deal.
Hot Blood Back in his Army days when Shepherd was chasing the Taliban in Afghanistan, Dan's life was saved by fellow trooper Geordie Mitchell. Now, while working for a private security company in the Iraqi capital, Mitchell is kidnapped by Islamic insurgents. In a video broadcast to the world, Mitchell's captors display their hostage and threaten his execution in two weeks if their demands aren't met. With virtually no leads as to Geordie's exact whereabouts or the identity of his abductors, Spider and three other former Sassmen, led by their old boss SAS Major Allan Gannon, must extricate Mitchell from his dodgy predicament before his throat is literally put to the knife.
Killer Elite Years ago I read a biography of Ronald Reagan called "Dutch." The book was brilliant at times, but was ultimately undid by a weird thing the writer did. He blended a fictional character with the non-fiction and it got to the point where you could not tell fact from fiction. That is my problem with "Killer Elite." The story was cool and the writing was good. The problem was, I do not know what is fact from fiction in the book and that ultimately took away from the story for me.

O'Farrell's Law Professional assassin Charles O'Farrell experiences an on- the-job crisis when his new target, Cuban ambassador Jose Gaviria Rivera, hires O'Farrell's eight-year-old nephew as a courier.
The Infernals The biggest strong point of the book is humor which particularly fills almost every paragraph of the book. The book lays quite a scenario and then goes about its comical way filling in the reader with nuggets about time travel, physics, the nature of evil, etc. The ending comes as a nice surprise and the author again leaves a thread open for the third and possibly final book in the series. Even though this book is aimed for kids, adults will have a fun time reading it taking in mind that the author has purposefully kept certain things the way they are. Deficiencies to the story are the same which can be labeled against any children's books. Therefore they can be easily discounted by asking people who do not like to read such stories, to not read them. However I feel one should read such stories from time to time to let the child in all of us escape from adult life.
The Night Strangers I'm not going to give away any more than that. I loved this book! It was creepy and a perfect read for a crisp October night. This would be an awesome book to read around Halloween to get you in the seasonal mood. Chris's prose is outstanding as usual and I think that The Night Strangers is now my new favorite of his books. Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a great thrill ride!
Crackdown: A Novel of Suspense To fans of Cornwell's great historical fiction, the novels in the thriller series may disappoint. These are modern mysteries (inverted detective stories) with sailing themes and accurate accounts of seamanship and nautical lore. The thriller series includes "Wildtrack" (1988), "Sea Lord" (1989), "Crackdown" (1990), and "Storm Child" (1991) so these were published during the release of several novels in the Sharpe series. For the nautically obsessed, these are highly recommended.
The Patience Stone The novel never leaves the room in which the man lies. The setting captures the narrow world of the Afghan woman as she is largely confined to the home. As the woman begins to lose her patience, she starts to confide in her husband
as he becomes an embodiment of the legendary patience stone. She gradually unfastens the chains of expectation as she reveals her true thoughts and feelings to her husband for the first time sometimes sad, sometimes rageful, and sometimes with surprising secrets that she has kept. The volume of her emotion rises to a powerful crescendo and a climax that is ambiguous and thought-provoking.

The Phoenix Apostles The authors of the Cotten Stone series of religious thrillers introduce a new heroine in The Phoenix Apostles. Seneca Hunt is a reporter covering an archaeological dig in Mexico City, the examination by remote camera of the recently discovered tomb of Montezuma II, when her life is upended by an explosion. But what looks initially like a terrorist act turns out to be far more complicated. There's a would-be messiah out to save the world by unsavory means, and he's rounding up apostles to give him a hand the canonical twelve, but he's not simply calling them from their fishing boats to come join him. This messiah uses cutting-edge technology to form his posse. The fate of the world is very much at stake. Mix in a love interest, some black ops intrigue, an ailing mother, daddy issues, and a hint of The Boys from Brazil, and you've got a really fun page turner. The dialogue can be a little stilted, but otherwise I really liked the book, and I'd like to see more of Seneca in future titles.
The Protector Well-developed bad guys you love to hate and get to see taken down, a healthy number of totally hot, unquestionably honorable good guys to fall in love with, lots of charismatic characters complete with flaws as well as admirable
qualities, all contained in an exciting, believable plot: this book has EVERYTHING I've come to expect from one of Marliss Melton's books! Loved, loved, loved it!
The Rosetta Codex The characters fell flat for me. The hero, Cale, is frustratingly non-sympathetic for much of the book. The supporting cast seems to be completely defined by broad and simple character traits: Sidonie is scarred from her ordeals across the Divide, but still loyal Cicero is old and obsessed with the study of the Jaaprana Blackburn is an antagonist who nonetheless has a soft spot in his heart (or seems to) for Cale the Sarakheen are Evil. My biggest problem was that the plot seemed to run at the same speed and intensity the entire book there was no real rising action, no climax, and no resolution. The book, in my opinion, starts on one note and really ends on the same note.
Wildtrack: A Novel of Suspense The first thing the reader becomes aware of is that Cornwell really knows sailing. He know all the terminology, and ins and outs of sail craft. His characters are plausible and appealing. The plot develops well and has some surprising twists. Bernard Cornwell is a master story teller. Anyone who loves the sea and adventure stories will love this book.
The Deadly Dance Infuriated that her holiday was ruined by a mugging, Agatha Raisin decides to open up her own detective agency. The romance-minded sleuth is thrilled by visions of handsome fellow gumshoes and headline-making crimes—but soon finds the only cases she can get are a non-glamorous lot of lost cats and an errant teenager. But when a wealthy divorcee hires the agency to investigate a death threat against her daughter Cassandra, Agatha thwarts a vicious attack on the heiress bride. Now Agatha is in hot pursuit of the culprit. But when the groom’s father turns up dead, Agatha must untangle a growing list of suspects, from Carsely’s quiet village lanes to Paris’ most fashionable streets. Soon the willfully undaunted Agatha is in trouble with French and British police on the outs (again) with old friends— and dead in the sights of a murderer.

The Door to December The "scary and stylish" (Los Angeles Times) novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author. A call in the middle of the night summoned psychiatrist Laura McCaffrey out into the rain-swept streets of Los Angeles. The police had found her husband-beaten to death. The Darkest Evening of the Year With each of his #1 New York Times bestsellers, Dean Koontz has displayed an unparalleled ability to entertain and enlighten readers with novels that capture the essence of our times even as they bring us to the edge of our seats. Now he delivers a heart-gripping tour de force he’s been waiting years to write, at once a love story, a thrilling adventure, and a masterwork of suspense that redefines the boundaries of primal fear—and of enduring devotion. Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she’s a legend for the risks she’ll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy’s heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can’t allow herself to return, Amy’s behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret. No one is surprised when Amy risks her life to save Nickie, nor when she takes the female golden into her home. The bond between Amy and Nickie is immediate and uncanny. Even her two other goldens, Fred and Ethel, recognize Nickie as special, a natural alpha. But the instant joy Nickie brings is shadowed by a series of eerie incidents. An ominous stranger. A mysterious home invasion. And the unmistakable sense that someone is watching Amy’s every move and that, whoever it is, he’s not alone. Someone has come back to turn Amy into the desperate, hunted creature she’s always been there to save. But now there’s no one to save Amy and those she loves. From its breathtaking opening scene to its shocking climax, The Darkest Evening of the Year is Dean Koontz at his finest, a transcendent thriller certain to have readers turning pages until dawn.
Sole Survivor A catastrophic, unexplainable plane crash leaves three hundred and thirty dead no survivors. Among the victims are the wife and two daughters of Joe Carpenter, a Los Angeles Post crime reporter. A year after the crash, still gripped by an almost paralyzing grief, Joe encounters a woman named Rose, who claims to have survived the crash. She holds out the possibility of a secret that will bring Joe peace of mind. But before he can ask any questions, she slips away. Driven now by rage (have the authorities withheld information?) and a hope almost as unbearable as his grief (if there is one survivor, are there others?), Joe sets out to find the mysterious woman. Odd Thomas “The dead don't talk. I don't know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different. A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15. Today is August 14. In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares—and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.
One Door From Heaven Hailed as “America’s most popular suspense novelist” (Rolling Stone) Dean Koontz has entered a rich new phase of his writing career that is yielding his most imaginative, meaningful, and popular work yet. At the height of his powers as a literary craftsman, he has won the acclaim of critics as well as the allegiance of millions of fans the world over, transforming the greatest fears and hopes of our time into masterworks of dazzling originality and emotional resonance. Now, with the stunning depth and virtuosity of his storytelling, he brings to readers one of his most gripping and richly imagined novels to date—an intoxicating story of adventure and suspense, mystery and revelation, told with humor, heart, and high art. One Door Away From Heaven In a dusty trailer park on the far edge of the California dream, Michelina Bellsong contemplates the choices she has made. At twenty-eight, she wants to change the direction of her troubled life but can’t find her way—until a new family settles into the rental trailer next door and she meets the young girl who will lead her on a remarkable quest that will change Micky herself and everything she knows—or thinks she knows—forever. Despite the brace she must wear on her deformed left leg, and her withered left hand, nine-year-old Leilani Klonk radiates a buoyant and indomitable spirit that inspires Micky. Beneath Leilani’s effervescence, however, Micky comes to sense a quiet desperation that the girl dares not express. Leilani’s mother is little more than a child herself. And the girl’s stepfather, Preston Maddoc, is educated but threatening. He has moved the family from place to place as he fanatically investigates UFO sightings, striving to make contact, claiming to have had a vision that by Leilani’s tenth birthday aliens will either heal her or take her away to a better life on their world. Slowly, ever more troubling details emerge in Leilani’s conversations with Micky. Most chilling is Micky’s discovery that Leilani had an older brother, also disabled, who vanished after Maddoc took him into the woods one night and is now “gone to the stars.” Leilani’s tenth birthday is approaching. Micky is convinced the girl will be dead by that day. While the child-protection bureaucracy gives Micky the runaround, the Maddoc family slips away into the night. Micky sets out across America to track and find them, alone and afraid but for the first time living for something bigger than herself. She finds herself pitted against an adversary, Preston Maddoc, as fearsome as he is cunning. The passion and disregard for danger with which Micky pursues her quest bring to her side a burned-out detective who joins her on a journey of incredible peril and startling discoveries, a journey through terrible darkness to unexpected light. One Door Away From Heaven is an incandescent mix of suspense and humor, fear and wonder, a story of redemption and timeless wisdom that will have readers cheering. Filled with tragedy and joy, with terror and hope, it solidifies Dean Koontz’s reputation as one of the foremost storytellers of our time. This is Dean Koontz at his very best—and it doesn’t get any better than that.

Life Expectancy Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the frist and last time since his stroke. What he says before he dies is that there will be five dark days in the life of his grandson—five dates whose terrible events Jimmy will have to prepare himself to face. The first is to occur in his twentieth year the second in his twentthird year the third in his twenty-eighth the fourth in his twenty-ninth the fifth in his thirtieth. Rudy is all too ready to discount his father's last words as a dying man's delusional rambling. But then he discovers that Josef also predicted the time of his grandson's birth to the minute, as well as his exact height and weight, and the fact that Jimmy would be born with syndactyly—the unexplained anomal of fused digits—on his left foot. Suddenly the old man's predictions take on a chilling significance. What terrifying events await Jimmy on these five dark days? What nightmares will he face? What challenges must he survive? As the novel unfolds, picking up Jimmy's story at each of these crisis points, the path he must follow will defy every expectation. And with each crisis he faces, he will move closer to a fate he could never have imagined. For who Jimmy Tock is and what he must accomplish on the five days when his world turns is a mystery as dangerous as it is wondrous—a struggle against an evil so dark and pervasive, only the most extraordinary of human spirits can shine through.

Intensity Chyna Shepherd is a twenty-six-year-old woman whose deeply troubled childhood taught her the hard rules of survival, and whose adult life has been an unrelenting struggle for self-respect and safety. Now rare trust has blossomed for Chyna into friendship with the woman whose family home she is visiting for the weekend: a farm in the Napa Valley surrounded by vineyards and hills, which Chyna can see from the guest-room window where she sits at one o'clock in the morning, fully dressed, unable to sleep. Suspicions she learned in childhood still make her uneasy in unfamiliar houses even this one, where her closest friend is sound asleep down the hall. And in this case her most disturbing instincts prove reliable. A man has entered the house, a man who lives for one purpose: to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits to live with intensity. His name is Edgler Foreman Vess. He likes to make words with the letters from his name GOD, DEMON, SAVE, RAGE, ANGER, FEAR, FOREVER, are just a few of them and then makes sentences with the words. One of his favorites, GOD FEARS ME, is sometimes the last thing he whispers to his victims. Edgler Vess is a self-proclaimed "homicidal adventurer": On this night, his adventure murdering everyone in the house becomes Chyna's long nightmare. Trapped in Vess's deadly orbit, Chyna thinks only of getting out alive. But when she inadvertently learns the identity of Vess's intended next victim, waiting for him far from Napa Valley, Chyna is gripped with concern for this other person, who is as innocent as Chyna, and as endangered. Driven now by a sense of responsibility for another, by a purpose and meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna rises to unexpected heights of courage and daring her only hope as the threat of Edgler Foreman Vess closes in and grows more horrifying moment by moment. Intensity unfolds over the course of just twenty-four hours, but within that brief time frame, Dean Koontz gives us what is perhaps his most inventive, emotionally intricate, and terrifyingly suspenseful novel yet.
Invasion (Aaron Wolfe & Dean Koontz) Having just about concluded that it was nothing more than the wind and the storm that was upsetting the horses and now they were all leaping and snorting more furiously than ever, as if they were not three ordinary nags but a trio of high-strung thoroughbreds I turned toward the door and quite accidentally caught sight of the light which glowed eerily just beyond the only window in the entire building. There were two lights, actually, both a warm amber shade and of dim wattage. They appeared to pulse and to shimmer and then they were gone, as if they had never been: blink! I hurried to the barn door, slid it open, and stepped into the snow-filled night. The arctic wind struck me like a mallet swung by a blacksmith who was angry with his wife, and it almost blew me back into the stable row. Switching on the nearly useless flashlight, I bent against the wind and pulled the door shut behind me. Laboriously, cautiously, I inched around the side of the barn in the direction of the window, peering anxiously at the ground ahead of me. I stopped before I reached the window, for I found precisely what I had been afraid that I would find: those odd, eightpointed tracks which Toby and I had seen on the slope earlier in the day. There were a great many of them, as if the animal had been standing there, moving back and forth as I searched for better vantage points, for a long while at least all of the time that I had been inside with the horses. It had been watching me.
Hell's Gate (Dean Koontz) He came out of the dark night with only another man's name...a man who would soon be found floating in a distant river. He was a man without a past, without a future he had only a bloody mission. His first act was violent murder! He was a man...or was he? Just who was Victor Salsbury? And if he was not a man, then...what was he? And who were the unseen masters, who issue orders only on whim? What were their plans for the world... plans so horrifying that they could change an unfeeling, nonhuman creature into a frightened human!
Hanging On (Dean Koontz) It all began when Major Kelly's Army engineers were dropped into Nazi-occupied France and ordered to keep a bridge open until the Allies arrived. Except the mission was a secret and nobody knew they were there nobody except the Luftwaffe, which kept bombing the bridge ... which meant the GI's kept rebuilding it ... which meant the Luftwaffe kept bombing it ... Which meant the tension was doing funny things to Major Kelly's men's minds ... which meant anything could happen AND YOU CAN BET YOUR LAST C-RATION IT DID!

Patiently the cyberdetective would explain that the computer half of his investigatory symbiosis did not "take over" when his human half joined with it. "A cyberdetective is part man and part computer, meshed as completely as the two can ever be. The highly microminiaturized components of the bio-computer remember and relate things in a perfectly mathematical manner that a human mind could never easily grasp, while the human half of the symbiote gives a perception of emotions and emotional motivations that the biocomputer could never comprehend. Together we make a precise and thorough detective unit."

The Illustrated Man Conceptually, The Illustrated Man is brilliant from the get-go, including its novel premise of 18 stories as told through the moving tattoos on a man's body; in addition to weaving intricate webs, the Illustrated Man's body art predicts the future. And, oh, what stories are told. As a science fiction writer, it is no surprise that the majority of Bradbury's stories have to do with space and the future (heck, all of space was in the future when these stories were written in the early 50s). Additionally, the majority of the tales are pretty bleak, dealing with dark themes of revenge, futile searches for paradise, and Armageddon. However, save for their near-universal excellence, thought-provocation, and prescience, the similarities end there. Among them: Mars is colonized by black people who have left Earth's prejudices, and await with apprehension the arrival of a white-piloted rocket ship from their former homeland; another planet's soldiers attack Earth and are surprised at the warm welcome they receive, only to learn that they can be conquered by Earth's lousy diet, sedentary ways, and shallow culture as easily as by the planet's military; an assembly of priests travels to Mars to learn about Martian sins, so as to spread God's word and earn converts of the Red plant; an entire city is built with the concept of vengeance in mind, by its citizens who were to perish before being able to exact that revenge themselves; the authors of classic tales of horror, whose works are banned on Earth, are themselves exiled to Mars and only kept alive by the few remaining copies not burned for censorship. There are a couple of lame ducks herein, but even those are salvaged by the beauty of Bradbury's writing. His metaphors and descriptive devices flow from the pages and grant a macabre beauty to even the most desolate of landscapes.
Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War I am not qualified, so I will not attempt a literary review of the book "Matterhorn". What I am qualified to comment on is the authenticity of this novel. I was in Vietnam at the same time the author was, our experience differed mainly in the name of our units. Marlantes was in Charlie 1/4, I was in Alpha 1/4. It's all so accurate, so real, and brought back a flood of memories from my time in the jungle. If a person wants to know what it was like to be a grunt in a Marine Corps rifle Co in I Corps in the Republic of Vietnam in the late 60's, then read "Matterhorn". I cannot express how
impressed I was by this novel. Mr. Marlantes NAILED it. He wrote my story, and the story of the men I humped those jungle trails with, the men I fought, cried, and died with. Thank you Sir.
Ringworld's Children The first Ringworld book was one of the old Larry Niven's later stories and is perhaps his grandest vision. The story is set on an artificial world that was created by building a ring around a star. The ring has the diameter of Earth's orbit, the inside is habitable, and there is enough room for almost anything to happen. Over the years Niven wrote two sequels: each less imaginative than the previous one. When "Ringworld's Children" appeared at my local library I ignored it because I was so tired of reading the awful books that Larry Niven has written over the past two decades. However, the other day I sat down and read the book and found that I could not put it down. The book is not a true return to form for Mr Niven, but it is far better than anything that he has written since the early 1970s, and it does have the feel of his early work, right down to the bad writing. If you like Larry Niven's early work then read this book. If you think that the Pournelle/Niven collaborations were the gospels of sci-fi then this book is probably not for you.
The Ringworld Engineers I found the Ringworld Engineers to be engaging and interesting wholely apart from the original Ringworld. While certainly the references to parts of the original book are made more clear having read that novel, this book is very readable even having read Ringworld many years before. Having said that, I would advise that it is a good idea to read Ringworld first as there are certainly items of that book which are spoiled herein. The way that Niven engages parts of his other novels of Known Space and entertwines them with this book made me want to go give some of those a shot as well. He truly is a master storyteller and this is one of his best novels on his own. Niven's collaborations with author Jerry Pournelle are also highly recommended. The classic The Mote In God's Eye as well as Footfall and Lucifer's Hammer are all very well done and certainly are must read novels for any Niven fan.
The Mote in God's Eye Writing separately, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are responsible for a number of science fiction classics, such as the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Ringworld, Debt of Honor, and The Integral Trees. Together they have written the critically acclaimed bestsellers Inferno, Footfall, and The Legacy of Heorot, among others. The Mote In God's Eye is their acknowledged masterpiece, an epic novel of mankind's first encounter with alien life that transcends the genre.

The Draco Tavern When a tremendous spacecraft took orbit around the Earth's moon and began sending smaller landers down toward the North Pole, the newly arrived visitors quickly set up a permanent spaceport in Siberia. Their presence attracted many, and a few people grew conspicuously rich from secrets they learned from talking to the aliens. One of these men, Rick Schumann, established a tavern catering to all of the various species of visiting aliens, a place he named the Draco Tavern. From the mind of #1 New York Times bestselling author Larry Niven come twenty-six tales and vignettes from this interplanetary gathering place, collected for the first time in one volume, including: "The Subject Is Closed": A priest visits the tavern and goes one-on-one with a chirpsithra alien on the subject of God and life after death. "Table Mannners: A Folk Tale": Rick Schumann is invited to hunt with five folk aliens, but he's not quite sure what their hunt entails, or if he will be the hunted. "Losing Mars": In this previously unpublished tale, a group of aliens who call Mars and its moon home arrive at the tavern only to find that humans have mostly forgotten about their neighboring planet.
Worth Dying For Who'd have thought it? Jack Reacher survived an explosion that can be seen from space. Read this in a few hours. Usual Reacher, breaks bones with scientific accuracy and speed. Utterly ruthless and barely a suggestion of sarcasm. Can't help thinking that if I was that good, I'd be sarcastic as hell. The Vegas villains seemed to be portrayed as if they were in a Cohen Brothers film. Stylish but stupid and incompetent. It made their outcomes fairly assured from the moment they were introduced. The ending tells us that the East Coast may be an eventful journey and personally I want to be on board. Jack Reacher is a character for our times. I've passed some time trying to work out who would play him on the big screen and the problem is there really isn't anyone who comes close. Russell Crowe? Too short and getting too old for the series (of films), but has the look. Making of the film would be fairly inexpensive as the action is real world, well, real Reacher world. Keep em' coming...
Maktub The author of The Alchemist collaborated for several years with the Brasilian newspaper “Folha de Sau Paulo”. Maktub is like the result of this collaboration. Coelho gathers several stories inspired from legends of folklores very diverse. It’s a new way to meet the wisdom of the Human Soul and a good opportunity to think. Maktub was published 10 years after The Alchimist, and once again we are under the sway of Paulo Coelho’s words. You may wonder what is his secret besides being a good writer ? He has a real gift and a great talent to explain in an obvious way, without religious considerations, the Man, the world, and the relationships in between them. In Maktub, we are shown small stories that tell us more about what life wants to share, however this is possible only if we open our heart to it. “Maktub is not a book of advice”. Review by Marilou Gonzalez
The Swordbearer A young boy's dreams of glory and war turn into a bitter nightmare as his father's kingdom is overrun by an invading army. Lost and alone in the woods, he finds an ancient sword that promises him the ability to claim his vengeance. As he begins to take that vengeance, he comes to realize the price that the sword will demand of him. Enemies soon become allies and strange bedfellows abound as the prophesies of an age swirl into chaos.
Shadowline (Starfishers Trilogy 1) The vendetta in space had started centuries before "Mouse" Storm was born with his grandfather's raid on the planet Prefactlas, the blood bath that freed the human slaves from their Sangaree masters. But one Sangaree survived - the young Norborn heir, the man who swore vengeance on the Storm family and their soldiers, in a carefully mapped plot that would take generations to fulfill. Now Mouse's father Gneaus must fight for an El Dorado of wealth on the burning half of the planet Blackworld. As the great private armies of all space clash on the narrow Shadowline that divides inferno from life-sheltering shade, Gneaus' half- brother Michael plays his traitorous games, and a man called Death pulls the deadly strings that threaten to entrap them all - as the Starfishers Trilogy begins.

Starfishers (Starfishers Trilogy 2) Starfish: Treasure troves of power. They were creatures of fusion energy, ancient, huge, intelligent, drifting in herds on the edge of the galaxy, producing their ambergris, the substance precious to man and the man-like Sangaree alike. In deep, starless space the herds were protected by the great harvestships of the Seiners, or Starfishers - the independent, non-Confederation people who dared to skirt the deadly boundaries of Stars' End and battle the Sangaree. It is with them on the harvestship Danion that Confederation agents Mouse Storm and Moyshe BenRabi have to fly and fight, probing mystery and myth. And where BenRabi, man of many names, must surrender his dreams and his mind itself to the golden dragons of space and their shepherds, the gathering... Starfishers.
Star's End (Starfishers Trilogy 3) At the edge of the galaxy lay the Fortress known as Stars' End, a mysterious planet bristling with deadly automated weapons systems, programmed to slaughter anyone fool enough to come within range. But who built this strange planet of death, placing it within view of the Milky Way's great lens... and tantalizingly close to the hydrogen-filled feeding grounds of the interstellar dragons known as Starfish and the priceless ambergris they create? Should the harvestships of the High Seiners, known as Starfishers, gain control of that arsenal, they need never fear the Confederation's navy nor the armies of the human-like Sangaree again. But intelligent life everywhere now needs the might of Stars' End and the expertise of agents Mouse Storm and Moyshe benRabi. For in the midst of the Sangaree wars, a far more sinister enemy approaches, coming from the depths of the galaxy, in hordes larger than a solar system. From Glen Cook, the Master of Modern Heroic Fantasy, comes Stars' End, the final novel in the Starfishers Trilogy, a seamless blend of ancient myth, political intrigue, and scintillating futuristic combat action.

Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life 2011 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 0061697702 | PDF | 2 MB If Vietnamese Zen Buddhist master Nhat Hanh says the same thing over and over, it could be because not enough people have heard him, and those who have need a reminder. He speaks to both groups in this work, coauthored by Harvard nutritionist Cheung, urging mindfulness about what people put in their mouths. It's a diet book and a meditation book, an unusual hybrid that makes sense for Nhat Hanh because it applies his essential wisdom: pay attention; breathe. If you consistently do that, you'll eat less, and at least two-thirds of Americans surely need to follow that advice. This book adds a lot of eat-this-and-not-that rules, as well as exercise guidelines, delivering so much information the effect is a little overwhelming. But the core meditation instructions are quintessential Nhat Hanh, steely and loving. This could be the diet-and-exercise book for those who have failed using other methods and need a fresh approach. For Nhat Hanh's many fans, it is the sole wellness book they'll need to remind themselves to only pay attention.

Thailand: The Worldly Kingdom ISBN 10: 1861893140 | 2007 | PDF | 256 pages | 2 MB Tourist brochures and travel guides depict Thailand as an exotic country with a rich cultural heritage, strong religious traditions, and a popular monarchy. Historians also contribute to Thailand’s international allure with chronicles of its unique historical and cultural continuity in comparison to the other southeast Asian countries, whose histories are stained by colonialism and nationalist struggles for independence. Thailand challenges these stereotypes with a reinterpretation as well as an introduction to the emergence of Thailand as a nation-state. The book argues that the development of Thai nationhood was a long-term process shaped by interactions with the outside world, its pursuit of civilization, and, more recently, globalization. Maurizio Peleggi’s original account investigates, among other issues, the evolution of the geographical and linguistic landscapes, changes in class and gender relations, the role of institutions and ideologies, modern cultural expressions, social memory, and the conception of the Thai national self as contrasted against the racial and cultural Others of Burmese, Chinese and Westerners. Thailandis a concise and compelling introduction to the complexities that lie behind Thailand’s exotic facade.

Listening to Popular Music: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Led Zeppelin 2007-05-02 | ISBN: 0472069837, 0472099833 | 264 pages | PDF | 13 MB It has long been assumed that people who prefer Led Zeppelin to Mozart live aesthetically impoverished lives. But why? In Listening to Popular Music, award-winning popular music scholar Theodore Gracyk argues that aesthetic value is just as important in popular listening as it is with “serious music. And we don’t have to treat popular music as art in order to recognize its worth. Aesthetic values are realized differently in different musical styles, and each requires listening skills that people must learn. Boldly merging insights from popular music studies, aesthetic theory, cognitive science, psychology, identity theory, and cultural studies, Gracyk crafts an innovative study that argues that understanding aesthetic value is crucial to the enjoyment of all forms of music. Listening to Popular Music thus offers a new, general framework for understanding what it means to appreciate music, showing that an informed preference for popular music is a response to real values of the music, including aesthetic values.
"Finally, a book on aesthetics that's philosophically grounded, anti-elitist, and tailored to popular music. Much needed and deftly achieved." —William Echard, Department of Music, and Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art, and Culture, Carleton University "A sophisticated account of aesthetic value in popular music that revealingly challenges orthodoxies of cultural studies and traditional aesthetics." —Stephen Davies, Department of Philosophy, University of Auckland, and author of The Philosophy of Art "Gracyk's arguments are thoughtful, clear, and persuasive, and it's refreshing to see him expose the flaws in commonly repeated critiques of popular music. This book will challenge open-minded doubters to take popular music seriously." —Mark Katz, Assistant Professor of Music, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and author of Capturing Sound: How Technology Has Changed Music Theodore Gracyk is Department Chair and Professor of Philosophy at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He is the author of Rhythm and Noise: An Aesthetics of Rock and I Wanna Be Me: Rock Music and the Politics of Identity, which won the 2002 IASPM-US Woody Guthrie Book Award.

The Astronaut's Cookbook: Tales, Recipes, and More 2009 | ISBN: 1441906231 | 219 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Astronauts, cosmonauts, and a very limited number of people have experienced eating space food due to the unique processing and packaging required for space travel. This book allows anyone with a normal kitchen to prepare space food. Since some of the processing such as freeze dehydration, and packaging cannot be accomplished in the normal kitchen, many of the recipes will not produce the food that would be launched in space, but will prepare food similar to what the astronauts would eat after they had added the water to the food in space. Many of the space foods are prepared to the point of ready to eat, and then frozen and freeze dried. Food preparation in this book stops at the point of ready to eat before the freezing and dehydrating takes place. Recipes in this book are extracted from the NASA food specifications and modified for preparation in a normal kitchen. In addition, astronaut home favorite recipes and NASA quarantine food recipes are included. NASA developed an extensive frozen food system for the International Space Station Habitation Module. The Habitation Module was cut from the budget, so these foods were not used, but some of the favorite recipes are in this book. NASA also developed a complete food system for planetary missions based on crops that could be grown in space. Some of these vegetarian recipes are also included in the book. Each recipe has the source identified such as Shuttle, International Space Station, astronaut favorite etc. The book will contain the following chapters: Introduction, Appetizers, Beverages, Bread and Tortillas, Cookies, Sandwiches, Desserts, Main Dishes, Soups and Salads, Vegetables, and Future Space Foods. Interesting tidbits of space food history will be spread throughout the book. Examples like; did NASA invent Tang?, who was the first person to eat in space?, the Gemini sandwich fiasco, why there is no alcohol in U.S. space food systems, astronauts favorite food, etc. This book will be of interest to anyone wanting to taste and serve space food, chefs for special meals, teachers for use in the classroom, and anyone with a general interest in food and space.

How to Cheat at Everything: A Con Man Reveals the Secrets of the Esoteric Trade of Cheating, Scams, and Hustles 2007-01-01 | ISBN: 1560259736 | 456 pages | PDF | 28,7 MB Gambling is more popular than ever, with multi-million dollar poker tournaments on television, gambling themed movies like Rounders gaining in popularity, and casinos opening in just about every state of the U.S. How to Cheat at Everything is a roller-coaster ride through bar bets, street hustles, carnivals, Internet fraud, big and small cons, card and dice games and more. You'll even find the exact frauds that the NYPD regard as the most common and dangerous today, and learn top tips on how to avoid each one. This inside information comes from Lovell's lifetime of experience in the field, along with additional information from both sides of the law. Not just a "here's how the con works" book; this guides you through the set up, the talk, the sell, everything about the con, and how you can be suckered into one. If you think that you can't be conned; then you are already halfway to being so! There is no preaching here, just a fun ripping ride through a world so few know about. You'll meet wild, eccentric and larcenous characters and you'll learn how they work their money-making deeds, all without having to risk a penny of your own money. From magician and reformed con-man Lovell comes this seemingly comprehensive guide to cheating with props, cards, numbers, coins, telephones, sleight of hand, dice, and more. The book is written with an impish grin (hey, we all know you wouldn't do this stuff, but here's how to do it, just hypothetically) and features dozens of hustles that anyone can perform, with a little practice. Most depend on a simple trick--when you bet that a tossed paper match will land on its edge, the trick is to bend the match in the middle first--but there are some that depend on elegance of execution, or on selling the mark a story (like "work at home" schemes or e-mails offering to enhance parts of the anatomy). For those who are willing to accept the larcenous premise, this is a thoroughly fascinating and even charming book, chock-full of fun and adventure. --David Pitt

How To Make Maximum Money With Minimum Customers: 21 Proven Direct-Marketing Strategies Anyone Can Use! Are you an entrepreneur or salesperson who needs more qualified leads? How about converting your existing leads into paying customers and clients, much faster? Are you a doctor, financial services, or other trade professional, who's always dreamed of having effortless, 'almost magic-like' marketing that'll have your daily planner filled with appointments? Do you own a jewelry store, dry cleaners, or other retail establishment you'd love to see packed with paying customers? Have you had it 'up to here' with clients who demand first-class service, even though they're on a Wal-Mart budget?
Do you want to avoid tire-kickers who shop around for the lowest prices in town or online, and instead, only deal with ultra-rich clients who are thrilled to be working with someone of your caliber? If you answered 'Yes!' to any of these questions, or if you just want to make a LOT of money, very quickly, then this is the most exciting and important book you will ever read. Often compared to Eugene Schwartz 'Breakthrough Advertising,' inside you'll discover: How Garber made $578,463 in one year with a small list of customers, without spending a dime on advertising and almost all at 90% profit. Garber shows you how to at least double your sales, whether you work online, offline, or both. Not by begging JV's or affiliates to promote you, but by using fresh new ideas that work in ANY business. On page 42, you'll uncover the single greatest secret weapon for making money in any business. How powerful is this secret? Quite simply, it is the best source of ongoing and predictable income, referrals and repeat business, in the world. And, it has almost zero downside risk. What about advertising? Are you sick and tired of running online and offline ads that never get the kind of responses you want? Is your website more like a ghost town than a bustling freeway, filled with traffic? Don't worry, Chapter 23, How To Write A Sales Letter That Sells, gives you the blueprint to designing compelling ads that'll have your buyers lined up and practically begging you to take their money. Garber walks you through the 12 proven items you MUST include in every ad or sales letter, to make them perform as reliably as a Swiss watch. As you know, there are only three ways to make more money: Raise your prices, get more customers, or increase the value of your average transaction size. In Chapter 12, you'll discover a simple strategy (which takes less than 5 minutes to implement) that gets up to 98.4% of your customers to spend more money with you, every time they buy. How to sell products and services for much higher prices and profit margins than your competition! The secret to charging top-dollar is knowing how to 'position' yourself in the marketplace. And this is much easier to do than you think, as you'll see in Chapter 10, How To Become Number One In Your Industry. Why conventional business and marketing advice is useless, because it revolves around exchanging time for money. Look, whenever you're trading time for money, your income is limited by the amount of time you're either willing, or are physically able, to work. Garber reveals 2 simple strategies (pages 135 and 321) that leverage your time and multiply your effort, so your cash-flow is no longer tied to how long or how hard you can work. Result: a lot less work... and a lot more money. Listen, 'hoping' things get better, won't work. Hope is not a good business strategy. In times like this, you need to think smarter, not work harder, and this book shows you exactly how to do this.

The Forbidden Universe: The Occult Origins of Science and the Search for the Mind of God 2011 | ISBN: 1616080280 | EPUB | 400 pages | 1,5 MB From the bestselling and controversial writers who inspired The Da Vinci Code comes the latest in scientific and religious conspiracies. Secret societies, famous scientists, ancient Egyptian mysticism, and a fascinating addition to the god-versus-science debate: the Catholic Church. By the bestselling authors of The Templar Revelation and Mary Magdalene, The Forbidden Universe reveals how the foundations of modern science were based around a desire to destroy the church. The great pioneering scientists of the Renaissance and the early Enlightenment (including Copernicus, Galileo, and Sir Isaac Newton) were fervent devotees of the philosophical/mystical system of Hermeticism. Many of the most important scientists of this age, including Galileo, belonged to a secret society called the Giordanisti, which had the agenda to overthrow the Church and establish a new age of Hermetic supremacy.

Ike's Spies: Eisenhower and the Espionage Establishment Published: 2012-01-17 | ISBN: 0307946606 | PDF | 384 pages | 3 MB Based on privileged access to the president and his private papers, this classic Cold War-era history by bestselling historian Stephen E. Ambrose gives an inside look at the way President Dwight Eisenhower managed America’s secret operations as general and as commander in chief. During his time in office, Eisenhower projected the image of a genial bureaucrat, but behind that public face, he ran the most efficient espionage establishment in the world, overseeing assassination plots, the growth of the CIA, and the overthrow of governments. This book gives a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most ambitious secret operations in American history, including the 1954 overthrow of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmån’s government of Guatemala; Operation
AJAX, which toppled Iran’s Mossadegh; and the U-2 flights over Russia. Some of Ike’s most conspicuous intelligence missteps are also discussed, including the failure to predict the German attack during the Battle of the Bulge and the tragic encouragement of freedom fighters in Hungary, Indonesia, and Cuba. Ike’s Spies is indispensible to anyone interested in the development of America’s Cold War spy operations.

The Moment It Clicks: Photography Secrets from One of the World's Top Shooters (1st Edition) Language: English | ISBN: 0321544080 | 2008 | PDF | 272 pages | 9,5 mb Joe McNally, one of the world’s top pro digital photographers, whose celebrated work has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, Time, and National Geographic (to name a few), breaks new ground by doing something no photography book has ever done—blending the rich, stunning images and elegant layout of a coffee-table book with the invaluable training, no-nonsense insights, and photography secrets usually found only in those rare, best-of-breed educational books. When Joe’s not on assignment for the biggest-name magazines and Fortune 500 clients, he’s in the classroom teaching location lighting, environmental portraiture, and how to “get the shot” at workshops around the world. These on-location workshops are usually reserved for a handful of photographers each year, but now you can learn the same techniques that Joe shares in his seminars and lectures in a book that brings Joe’s sessions to life. What makes the book so unique is the “triangle of learning” where (1) Joe distills the concept down to one brief sentence. It usually starts with something like, “An editor at National Geographic once told me…” and then he shares one of those hard-earned tricks of the trade that you only get from spending a lifetime behind the lens. Then, (2) on the facing page is one of Joe’s brilliant images that perfectly illustrates the technique (you’ll recognize many of his photos from magazine covers). And (3) you get the inside story of how that shot was taken, including which equipment he used (lens, f/stop, lighting, accessories, etc.), along with the challenges that type of project brings, and how to set up a shot like that of your own. This book also gives you something more. It inspires. It challenges. It informs. But perhaps most importantly, it will help you understand photography and the art of making great photos at a level you never thought possible. This book is packed with those “Ah ha!” moments—those clever insights that make it all come together for you. It brings you that wonderful moment when it suddenly all makes sense—that “moment it clicks.”

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition (Audiobook) 2010 | 9 hours and 55 mins | ISBN: 0307737853 | MP3 128 kbps | 491 MB Anne Frank’s extraordinary diary, written in the Amsterdam attic where she and her family hid from the Nazis for two years, has become a world classic and a timeless testament to the human spirit. Now, in a new edition enriched by many passages originally withheld by her father, we meet an Anne more real, more human, and more vital than ever. Here she is first and foremost a teenage girl—stubbornly honest, touchingly vulnerable, in love with life. She imparts her deeply secret world of soul-searching and hungering for affection, rebellious clashes with her mother, romance and newly discovered sexuality, and wry, candid observations of her companions. Facing hunger, fear of discovery and death, and the petty frustrations of such confined quarters, Anne writes with adult wisdom and views beyond her years. Her story is that of every teenager, lived out in conditions few teenagers have ever known.

Dan's Favorite Raw Recipes DVDRip | AVI / AVC, 1195 kb/s | 852x480 | Duration: 01:25:15 | English: MP3, 192 kb/s (2 ch) | 853 mb Genre: Raw Recipes Get Dan’s great tasting recipe for coconut almond yogurt. This is an excellent recipe for athletes and helps keep you energized, stable and balanced. (You’ll also hear about Dan’s private source for getting real live almonds, which you definitely want to have.)
One of the simplest (and best tasting) raw food recipes you will find… ever. The best part is, you can make the entire dish in about 2 minutes—really. If you’re looking for raw food that tastes great, you’ll definitely want to see Dan’s proven recipe (it’s probably his most used) for Lemon Tahini Dill Dip with Veggies. It’s a must have! If you like tacos you will absolutely LOVE Dan’s “World Famous” recipe for raw tacos. If he’s in a pinch and needs to impress someone who doesn’t eat raw, this is his go-to recipe. You’ll love this recipe Dan created for a cooking contest in New York. His butternut squash spaghetti will blow you away just like it did the owner of the restaurant where the contest was held. Traditional salsa and guacamole are usually raw, but Dan kicks it up to an entirely new level with his own secret recipe for these two popular dishes. If you like sweet, you won’t believe how good Dan’s recipe is for a kicked-up snack involving mango. You don’t want to miss this.
