Merciless: A Mystery I have to say this is one of the harder reviews I have had to write, because Lori has truly outdone herself with this one!! I have to fight myself from going supper fan girl on this one! This series gets better and better with each book!! Like with the others this one got a hand hold on me, and I couldn't put it down till I was finished with it. I just really really LOVE Mercy!!!
My Name is Memory The historical narratives are balanced by a story of intrigue and discovery set in the present day. Lucy, who is initially reluctant to believe Daniel's story, struggles with her desire for normalcy against her need to understand. Daniel only wants to protect and love her but is unsure how to best go about those goals, especially with a threat to safety of both of them looming ever-closer. While nearing the end of the book, I noticed that the story was still at a climax and there was no resolution in sight for the couple. Yes, the novel does end on a cliff-hanger which begs the question: will there be a sequel? I sincerely hope so. The ending is so ambiguous and juicy that there almost has to be a follow-up. Otherwise, Brashares will have plenty of pissed off readers on her hands.
Pirate: Sea Robber
This is the third book which follows the life a YOUNG Irish lad and his adventures as slave, seafarer and unwilling pirate. Occasionally it becomes a little too much of a narrative rathyer than a story. However it is a really good tale and he gets his girl in the end.
Saxon: The Book of Dreams Tim Severin has clearly done his research and read the historical sources. In particular, his portrait of King Karl, very tall and strong with a long moustache but a high pitched voice, happens to be confirmed both from the sources and from archaeology (the size of his skeleton is 1.92 meters). Other details, such as the fact that he could not read, his restless energy, his fits of bad temper, that he had several wives and multiple daughters from a large number of concubines, that his only living son during the first decade of his reign was a hunchback, are also drawn from the written sources that we still have.

Sleeping Beauty: Vampire Slayer I loved Sleeping Beauty in this story so much more than the original fairytale, and let me tell you it had a large bit to live up to being my favorite fairytale. She was so independent and strong, and the fact she could defend herself was a bonus! I realized after I decided to read it, that it's a second in the series. Yes I have the other book, Cinderella Ninja Warrior, but I didn't think I would be lost. I sure don't feel lost now after reading it either.

Viking: Sworn Brother There are many novels portraying the Norse seafarers. They make fascinating characters, leading the adventurous lives we dreamt of in childhood. A glance at any history of Medieval Europe shows the extent of their conquests down the major rivers of Russia to link with their cousins in the Mediterranean. Their impact on history has been muted or misinterpreted often, usually due to their attacks on Christian establishments and their vacillating attachment
to "The Faith". Their seafaring and conquering talents have not faded, however. They are the stuff of legend, even when the forays failed.
The Boy Who Could See Demons There was a sense of disconnect in the use of angels in the earlier book that didn't allow the reader to really feel the pain, keeping them distant from the experience and unable to truly sympathise with the characters. It's ironic then that we are able to gain a much fuller picture of someone who is enduring great distress and mental turmoil by seeing it expressed in, if you like, demonic possession. If we were to view the story solely through the eyes of Alex however, a ten-year old Belfast boy who is taken into care after an attempted suicide by his mother, his actions directed by demons that only he can see, it would be fascinating and entertaining view of a dark subject, but it would be nowhere near as complete were we not also to have the outside view of Anya, a psychiatrist who has recently returned to the province.

Buccaneer I look forward to the next installment of the series. I've read all of Tim's fictional works and really enjoy his stories.
Cloud Riders Wasn't sure if I was going to like this book but it pulled you in very fast and kept you reading. Could not put it down.
Consolation In this new novel, Michael Redhill introduces us to one such historian, David Hollis. Through much research, Hollis feels he has pinpointed the location of a steel strongbox, containing an enormous treasure: glass negatives from the earliest pictures ever taken of Toronto when it was still in its newborn stages. Unfortunately, we no sooner meet Hollis than we lose him. He has Lou Gehrig's disease, and commits suicide in the very first chapter. We learn more about Hollis from his wife, Marianne, than from observing him.
Corsair I look forward to the next installment of the series. I've read all of Tim's fictional works and really enjoy his stories.
1.4 I loved this series. This book is my favorite of the two but both are definite must reads. Wonderful addition to any dystopian collection...

66 North Ridpath has done it again. His characters are engaging and realistic. For an Englishman, or for one of any nationality, Ridpath intuitively captures what it is to be an Americanized Icelander in Iceland. I eagerly await his next installment.
Acting Up It turned out to be the British title for "Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field," a wonderful book I've read more than once. I can use "Acting Up" as a lending copy, but wanted to post this to alert fans that no, no one discovered an unpublished manuscript from Melissa Nathan, more's the pity!
Act of Terror Just to make things a bit more intriguing, there is a also a group of white supremacists who try and fail to take down Quinn, not once, but twice. Their interest is due to a some lies being spread by some agent's provocateurs placed fairly high in the nation's leadership. Additionally, there is also a tough new female protagonist, who is quick and deadly with her Glock 22 and seems to have romantic intentions towards Quinn. She manages to join Quinn on a jaunt thru the frozen mountains of Afghanistan on a pair of Royal Enfield replicas from India.

After Life As a long-time avid reader, I have read many books but this is the first time I have felt compelled to comment. Ms. Ellis' book is totally captivating. Her main character, Naomi Ash, is so likeable that even though you know from the beginning "whodunit" you keep hoping that the "why" she did it will still enable her to live happily ever after. But as with real life, there isn't always a happily-ever-after for everyone...not during life maybe not After Life. Ms. Ellis created a setting so picturesque that it made me want to find "Trainline", NY. Surprisingly, I found she did not draw the town from imagination, but from memory. It exists, still, in 2000 and is as amazing as she describes. The town in the novel and the town in Western NY are both places that once visited will never be forgotten.
All Seeing Eye Four hours ago, I turned on my Kindle and started reading. I had not planned on spending the whole morning reading, but once I opened the first page, I was reluctant to stop. Jack has a distinctive voice, and his psychometry "disability" flows over him and any reader. Don't think psychometry parlor tricks. The range of characters he meets and the types of situations kept me speeding on. I'm looking forward to re-reading the novel in a more normal fashion!
A Cat Was Involved I have read an awful lot of mystery and crime novels, with and without dogs. I love a lot of them but the Chet and Bernie books are something special. Since Chet the dog is the narrator of all the books there would have to be anthropomorphism, but Quinn seems to have a special understanding of a canine's take on things. Chet never loses his essential dogness, even as he relates his adventures in the first person...er...canine. Spencer Quinn is a pen name for Peter Abrahams, who is an acclaimed and established writer of suspense fiction for adults as well as mysteries for young adults, all of which would explain why these books are so well written, right from the start of the series.
A Rush to Violence
Throw in Assassins, betrayal, sibling rivalry, greed and hired guns and chances are the book will be hard to put down. The Fifth Avenue, Running of the Bulls universe that Smith has created keeps on getting better and better. The characters in this update to the universe are very endearing. Marty, Camille, Emma and Beth are the characters that drive this book forward. From start to finish, Smith pulls you in. At times the events seem out of this world but he still manages to make you feel for the characters. And believe me when i say that some characters here carry loads that would make Atlas empathetic. When i finished the book, i found it to be a great read, enjoyed the ending and can't wait to see what Smith has in store for this universe.
A Small Free Kiss in the Dark I love this narrator, and it was engrossing to camp out inside his head. He sees everything with an artist's eye, and he teaches you to appreciate the color and light and shape of the people and places he meets. His rich detailed observations allow his thoughts to become your thoughts, and you effortlessly follow along his journey, step by step. He's a runaway looking for a place to call home and people to call family in a world that's suddenly fallen into chaos.

These three images bracket the subject scrutinized in The Ceaseless Century, a volume aptly named for a century whose ramifications are still felt in historicist fashions, for example in the Versace ensemble, a creation that exemplifies that designer's penchant for what Richard Martin has called "a kind of Elton John ancien regime," and in the Theyskens piece, which reconsiders both the style and the material of eighteenth-century dress and incorporates miniskirt contemporaneity as well. In this fascinating volume, which accompanies a fall 1998 exhibition of the same name at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Richard Martin, Curator of The Costume Institute there, discusses and analyzes fashions of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, using the eighteenth century as a touchstone to discuss the complex navigation that characterizes revivalism. In the Introduction, he explains the history of The Costume Institute's involvement with dress of the eighteenth century and notes that "eighteenth-century fashion is unceasing because its principles in silhouette as artifice and in textile and surface as opulence are abidingly recalled in the history of fashion." Martin postulates that The Ceaseless Century fulfills two goals: it not only shows outstanding examples of eighteenth-century dress in the collection of The Costume Institute but also sets forth recurrent patterns of revival that have occurred over the past two hundred years. Those goals are well accomplished in three chapters, one treating each century involved and each including an introductory text and individual paragraphs on the costumes, all reproduced in color. The full-page details and multiple views of costumes that appear throughout this elegantly designed volume truly highlight the luxuriousness, charm, and craftsmanship of the fashions in The Ceaseless Century. They also complement the history as told in the text of the ongoing and important influence of the eighteenth century on fashion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries up to the present moment.
