Presumed Guilty: Casey Anthony: The Inside Story When Caylee Anthony was reported missing in Orlando, Florida, in July 2008, the public spent the next three years following the investigation and the eventual trial of her mother, Casey Anthony. On July 5, 2011, the case that captured headlines worldwide exploded when, against all odds, defense attorney Jose Baez delivered one of the biggest legal upsets in American history: a not-guilty verdict. In this tell-all, Baez shares secrets the defense knew but has not disclosed to anyone until now and frankly reveals his experiences throughout the entire case—discovering the evidence, meeting Casey Anthony for the first time, being with George and Cindy Anthony day after day, leading defense strategy meetings, and spending weeks in the judge’s chambers. Presumed Guilty shows how Baez, a struggling, high-school dropout, became one of the nation’s most high-profile defense attorneys through his tireless efforts to seek justice for one of the country’s most vilified murder suspects.

Presumed Guilty Product Description: Murder, betrayal, and a trial that feeds a media frenzy. Can one woman stand against the forces that threaten to tear her family apart? Pastor Ron Hamilton's star is rising. His 8,000-strong church is thriving. His good looks and charisma make him an exceptional speaker on family values. And his book on pornography in the church has become an unexpected bestseller. Everything is perfect. Until a young woman's body is discovered in a seedy motel room. The woman is a porn star. And all the evidence in the murder points to one man: Ron. With the noose tightening around her husband's neck, Dallas Hamilton faces a choice: believe the seemingly irrefutable facts or the voice of her heart. The press has already reached its verdict, and the public echoes it. But Dallas is determined to do whatever it takes to find the truth. And then a dark secret from Dallas's past threatens to take them all down. As the clock ticks toward Ron's conviction and imprisonment, and an underworld of evil encircles her, Dallas must gather all her trust in God to discover what really happened in that motel room . . . even if it means losing faith in her husband forever.

Nevermore: The Final Maximum Ride Adventure In this powerful and moving finale to James Patterson's epic fantasy series, fans will finally get the answers they've been waiting for and an ending full of shock, surprises, and the greatest conclusion you never saw coming.

The Kiss (Witch & Wizard) This book is another exceptionally written book in the series of Witch & Wizard Series. After Whit and Wisty save their world they find another enemy, but it seems they are fighting the city they just saved.

Arcadia Awakens The mafia theme. I am also a sucker for all things mafia. And this book is IT. Kai Meyer integrated all the necessary gangster story ingredients that I am looking for: treachery, crime, cruelty, deceit, and of course a good romance. This is not to say that this is a full blown mafia book like the Godfather by Mario Puzo. It's not. It's still very tame and mild. Still completely YA.

A Terrible Love A Terrible Love blew me away. The strength of this story lingers in your mind long after your finish reading. A young woman with no where to turn, finds the perseverance to break out on her own to survive and thrive. You couldn't help but become emotionally wrapped right into this amazing plot. The sexual chemistry was explosive, the characters riveting and the story completely original. 5 stars for A Terrible Love.

Baal Baal was Robert McCammon's first novel, a debut that would lead to some of the finest popular fiction of our time. Written at the age of 25 and published as a paperback original in 1978, it has been out of print for years. This deluxe new edition from Subterranean Press will give McCammon's many readers both newcomers and longtime fans the opportunity to trace the development of an extraordinarily talented man.

Bethany's Sin Bethany's Sin is a tiny, picturesque village in rural Pennsylvania. Its tree-lined streets, beautiful houses, and manicured exteriors offer or appear to offer both peace and a place of refuge. Evan Reid, a man haunted by his memories of the Vietnam War and by a history of viscerally disturbing dreams, comes to the village with his wife and daughter, hoping to make a fresh start after a series of discouraging setbacks. At first, all goes as planned. Evan resumes his career as a freelance writer while his wife, Kay, begins teaching math at a local college.

Cold Quiet Country The book has the occasional word that may make the reader run for a dictionary, but if you are a wordophile like I am, you will enjoy the added stimulation provided. The only discomfort I felt with this book was the graphic detail describing the way in which animals were being slaughtered for butchering, which is a concept I am sensitive to, so I passed up those paragraphs but it in no way hampered my comprehension of the story and actually enhanced the effect of the sometimes brutal undertones of the story.

Because she knows Margaret wouldn't just disappear without a word. And when another girl goes missing without a trace, Vanessa is certain it can't be a coincidence.

Deadly Night: The Murder of Candi Starr Jimmy and Fiona Alea investigate ghosts, hauntings and other paranormal phenomena in Nashville, TN. When they, and their ghost hunting crew Nash-Vegas Paranormal, discover the brutal murder of famous country singer Candi Starr, it's traumatic but not going to derail their lives. But the death doesn't stop with just the singer. As the killer tears his way through Candi's Nashville connections, the Aleas must try to protect their friends and family, using Fiona's link to the spirit world to help stop the killer.

Face of a Killer This book was selected for our Book Club, I had not heard of the authors, BUT I learned so much about how people were treated at the beginning of WW II.

Fobbit Abrams is able to reveal his personal viewpoint about the war he experienced through his fictional Chance Gooding and a lively roster of strangely engaging characters, some stranger and even more bizarre than the one before, who set the perfect stage for delivering concepts of philosophy and reasoning concerning not only the war but personal integrity, duty, honor, heroism, patriotism, bravado, cowardice, and the inefficiency of bureaucracy.

Gone South I love McCammon's work. When I picked up Gone South, I was under the impression it would be something dark, gritty...something that might make me hold my breath through a few eye-popping paragraphs of horror or near-horror. What I got was totally unexpected and delightfully welcomed...Gone South is weird! Not quite weird like most of McCammon's books are, but delightfully, touchingly, wacky and weird, and chock full of action and surprises!

Guilt: An Alex Delaware Novel The combination of Milo Sturgis and Alex Deleware is a well worn workable mix that is a constant hit. Together these two could find Judge Crater. As it is a pretty pregnant lady named Holly fussing around in her yard finds a buried box and there is a body in the box of a baby about 13-14 months old. This brings in the LAPD and Alex is in lockstep with Milo.

How Beauty Saved the Beast (Tales of the Underlight) Hauk and Jolie's connection to one another is as strong as ever. How Beauty Saved the Beast opens with a very good example of how much closer Hauk and Jolie have become, and how well they've gotten to know each other. I actually liked their dancing around an official relationship because it added a touch of romantic suspense on top of the suspense of not knowing what trouble would befall the Austin Underlight. When Hauk's ex-girlfriend, Ashley, comes into the picture she not only creates tension and jealousy between the two, but gives them both a reason to evaluate their feelings. The introduction of this new character served multiple purposes: showing that there's much more to the Order of Ananke than previously thought, widening our perspective of their goals and resources and giving us the chance to learn more details about Hauk's past.

Kinsey and Me: Stories First, I was surprised how well the Kinsey Millhone short mysteries stand up after over two decades. Each story is selfcontained, requiring no previous familiarity with Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone. With only a few characters per story, there are necessarily few suspects, yet each story kept me guessing to the end. They originally appeared in magazines and mystery anthologies in the late 80s and early 90s and are collected here for the first time.

Landed

It took some time to realize that the facts laid out in the first half were purposefully misleading, encouraging the reader to believe that the journey of Owen and his two children in the second half was presented with equal factual reliability. But of course, the investigative reports, medical and third party verifications disappear in the latter half. We are left only with Owen himself on whom to rely. Initially, when Owen has hit rock bottom, been prohibited from seeing his children and on the brink of suicide, it is plausible to believe that he has kidnapped his children and embarked on an epic journey home.

Out of the Easy Set in 1950 New Orleans, Out of the Easy is not typically the type of book I would read. Though I'd characterize it as a young adult historical novel, which I generally enjoy, the setting and the basic premise itself wouldn't have caught my attention. It's only because I had the opportunity to review this book that I even considered picking it up. And guess what? I read it in just one day.

Slated Slated has one of the coolest stories to it. Ever. It takes place in futuristic England where young teenage criminals are given a second chance. Rather than being put to death or imprisoned for life, they can be "rehabilitated" by being Slated. Their memories and personalities are erased and they are given a clean slate. They start over from scratch, relearn the basics, and most importantly, they are equipped with a "Levo" device. This device monitors their emotions and their happiness levels.

Splintered The world building in this book was insanely good. I was surprised at how well I loved this dark, and I mean DARK retelling. I mean this is Wonderland...but it's not. It's Creepyland. I mean it's vivid, and a very unique twist on the classic fairy-tale. It's completely dark. Like ZOMBIE kinda dark! It was completely thrilling! And just...how do you describe it? There are only so many adjectives in the world. Needless to say, it was very cool to see how she involved the poems like the Jabberwocky that we all know and love (I mean seriously, who doesn't?! It's the funnest poem to say!), and how it was all twisted.

Tamed By You (A Laurel Heights Novel) Valentine Jones has never been good at following rules, especially the one that matters most: following the family tradition of being a matchmaker. She's tried, but she happens to suck at it. So when her mother swoops in to help, Valentine is determined to prove she doesn't need a babysitter.

The Antiquarian I liked very much, the plot, the mistery and also the historical knowledge. I am not so sure about the main character, Enrique, for me he lacked force and determination, but maybe, that is what the author wants. Also, sometimes I found the progression of the action a little slow for my taste. But is a good book and you want to read to know who the killer is...

The Attack The novel begins in Tel Aviv with a rocket attack, the mayhem and chaos immediate and devastating, the street littered with the wounded and dying, the story segueing into the life of Dr. Amin Jaafari, a surgeon at a Tel Aviv hospital who dedicates his days to healing, basking in a contented marriage to the beautiful Sihem. As a suicide bomb explodes not far away, the doctor works long into the night to save the victims, returning to a silent house, belatedly remembering that his wife is due to return that evening after visiting her grandmother.

The Borribles: Across the Dark Metropolis Through the soot and grime of a London that tourists never see, the borribles attempt to lead Sam, the horse, to Neasdon where it could live in peace. During the exhausting journey through old buildings and junk yards the compact crew are forced to dodge the likes of Inspector Sussworth, a dapper power monger, and the obnoxious Sgt. Hanks. The determined little people persevere even when they encounter the dregs of society such as the so-called "meffos" who worship alcohol and drugs. Through it all the band of borribles trudge on to their distant destination.

The Boy Under the Table Tina is a young woman hiding from her grief on the streets of the Cross. On a cold night in the middle of winter she breaks all her own rules when she agrees to go home with a customer. What she finds in his house will change her life forever. Across the country Sarah and Doug are trapped in limbo, struggling to accept the loss that now governs their lives.

The Dark Hour The action never stops in this thriller by Robin Burcell, as CIA agent Zach Griffin escapes across the rooftops of Amsterdam's red light district, and special FBI agent Sydney Fitzpatrick narrowly escapes death when a vital witness is murdered. But with her skill as a forensic artist, Fitzpatrick has created a sketch that proves to be more important than she realized, when the woman in the sketch proves to be someone who supposedly died two years previously, and the wife of Zach Griffin.

The Dead and Buried I did figure out who done it before it was revealed, but it took me most of the book. I read this in one sitting and was pleased at the slight romance aspect as well. Kayla (ghost) was also a great character and her diary was eerie. She

assigned people as numbers so you kind of had to figure out who was who as well. It was also refreshing to see a main character so protective and loving of a younger sibling. The family aspect was novel and fun. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I were younger, but even so it's for anyone looking for an easy mystery involving high school, ghosts and drama.

The Hunter from the Woods The weakest and the most pointless of these is The Sea Chase. Gallatin is supposed to be the main character but really doesn't have much to do with the action but be a bystander. And mentally complain about the shipboard conditions and general hygene of the crew. He had almost nothing to do with the stories resolution, which should have been exciting but just fell flat.

The Indigo Spell: A Bloodlines Novel The Bloodlines series just keeps getting better and better and The Indigo Spell is by far my favorite book. I hate to admit that I liked it more than most Vampire Academy books *runs from the angry fans*. Well except for Shadow Kiss because that books is just...no words. As much as I loved the Vampire Academy books, I felt that the romance was a little lacking. Yes Rose and Dimitri are one of the most epic couples ever, but we still don't get to read about that many romantic moments between them. Richelle Mead definitely kicks up the romance and hotness factor in this book. In fact, I was surprised by how many swoony scenes Sydney and Adrian shared. Oh and the dream scenes were back! Ah, so many Sydrian Feels throughout this entire book! Don't believe me?

The Night Boat The story begins with a vividly written prologue in which a German U-boat sometimes known as an 'Iron Coffin' attacks an unsuspecting merchant vessel, and is itself attacked by a pair of Allied sub chasers. The action then shifts to the present day and to the idyllic Caribbean island of Coquina, where life is about to change in unimaginable ways. David Moore, a young man with a tragic and haunted past, is skin-diving in the waters off Coquina, searching for the salvageable remnants of shipwrecks. He accidentally detonates a long-unexploded depth charge, uncovering and releasing a submarine that has lain beneath those waters, virtually intact, for decades. The battered vessel that rises to the surface contains a bizarre and terrifying cargo that will transform a once peaceful island into a landscape of unrelenting nightmare.

The Night Ranger (A John Wells Novel) The book takes readers on an adventurous roller coaster ride through some of the most dangerous parts of Africa and leaves them clinging to the very edge of the seat which contains them. It is loaded with violence, suspense and surprises. Berenson again includes the characters Ellis Shafer and Vinny Duto, providing his loyal readers with more insight into the unorthodox and oftentimes comical relationship they share with Wells.

The Rebel Wife In his debut novel, Taylor Polites spins a page-turning story of desperation and transformation, set during the unstable Reconstruction Era. Polites' attraction to both historical research and eerie Gothic motifs -terror, darkness, miasma,

attraction, and deception- led him to craft something original, a subtle mystery that took me by surprise. I would recommend reading it on a hot summer night, if you can wait that long.

The Sacred Bones Praise for Byrnes premier work! With an abundance of writing on Jesus as of recent, it would be easy for one to overlook a novel like The Sacred Bones. You'd be well-off putting down one of those other "controversial" titles and picking up this one. Written with a flair for suspense, The Sacred Bones certainly satiates those who enjoy history and/or religion, but doesn't leave you neck-deep in either Biblical references or entirely fictional content. Byrnes has crafted a wonderful, thought-provoking, non-controversial title that any fan of suspense, be it historical or not, can enjoy. From the opening sequence to the page-turning discoveries of the main characters, I think you'll find yourself finishing this one long before you'd like to. A definite thumbs-up for Byrnes on his first work. I will be on the lookout for anything he has on the horizon.

Thirteen Moons The ninety year old main character, Will Cooper, relates his long and interesting life through a series of stories. As a small child he is orphaned and eventually "bound" to the owner of a small trading post near the Cherokee reservation. Through hard work and diligence he ends up running the store and eventually buys the operation upon the owners death. At the age of 12 he wins the love of his life in a card game. He fights in the Civil War on the side of the confederacy while leading a regiment of natives Americans. He interacts with national legends such as Davy Crockett and Andrew Jackson.

Ultimatum A threat has been made. An ultimatum delivered. Innocent people are in mortal danger. The gripping new bestseller from the master of the race-against-time thriller. The Threat 8am: an explosion blasts through a cafe in Central London. The Ultimatum Minutes later, a call from an unknown terror group warns that a far greater attack will be launched in 12 hours' time. The Prisoner William Garrett, AKA Fox, is awaiting trial for mass murder. He claims he can name the bombers. But only at a price.

Dizzy Dylan has a deep painful scar. Ziah has a fresh just-betrayed wound. Together they should equal a hotmess. But somehow... it's quite the opposite. The angst and battle they have with each other to begin with becomes a beautiful vulnerability that will have you glued to each page, reading as quick as you can. Hoping that they get their junk together and make it work. And what a sweet thing, we as the readers, get to see when they open up and are r.e.a.l. It's a story of 1st loves. That true vulnerability "heart on a platter" feeling that leaves you scared senseless. It's exciting to read.

Figgs & Phantoms

Mona Lisa Newton is feeling rather depressed lately. Her family consists of, among others, Uncle Truman Figg, the human-pretzel-turned-sign-painter who always makes exactly one mistake on his signs Uncle Florence Figg, who later coincidentally added the middle name Italy Newton ("Newt") Newton, the used car dealer Sister Figg, baton twirler and tap dancer, named by being raised by one older brother Gracie Jo, the dog catcher, and her son, Fido Figg the Second (the first was a dog). Mona finds she only feels close to Uncle Flo, a book dealer. After hinting that he may have to leave soon for "Capri" - apparently the heaven for Figg-Newton family members, Mona knows she must unravel the mystery surrounding the place. --Packed with tons of clever wordplays, subtle mystery clues, and funny moments (especially all of Uncle Truman's signs!) this is one book not to miss!!

Final Target: A Graham Gage Mystery This first novel has all the ingredients of a literary gourmet meal. The complexity of the story line keeps the reader wanting more and the author keeps leading the reader down a path with bread crumbs spiked with twists and turns that keep rolling back on themselves. Like fly on a spider''s web in the forest, I was caught in the intrigue, knowing I had no choice but succumb to the intricacies of the web. The ''bad guys'' will fool you, the ''good guys'' will inspire you and it is best to order take out, because you won''t put it down until you are done.

Firebirds Rising: An Original Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy Written by a number of well known writers of science fiction and fantasy, these are sories that are well-written and very interesting. It's a good book to have handy when you have only a short time to read and want something you can finish quickly. I recommend it.

Firestorm (Destroyermen) Without giving away too much of the plot, I can say that the book ends on a satisfying note for some of our old friends, while others are left in a very sticky predicament. Hopefully, Book Seven isn't too far away. This series has come a long way from that original trilogy, and there's no end in sight. Increasingly, we're seeing a parallel WWII unfolding in this alternate universe. I can't help but wonder what else might cross over from our world as 1945 comes around.

Skies of Steel: The Ether Chronicles The rescue of Daphne's parents, all the different tasks Daphne and Mikhail had to perform, that was fantastic. (It also would have made an awesome video game!) You could feel them knitting together as a team. But what did bother me a bit was the insta-connection in the beginning of the story. We never do find out why.

Farishta

This book has the cumulative wisdom and depth of the author's experience as a Peace Corps volunteer, a lieutenant in the US Navy, and then 30 years of being a State Dept. representative in many overseas posts. Because of the cross-cultural sensitivity, the book, set in 2005 Afghanistan, has a deep concern for each of the parts of the society, and an acuity of insight, which is rare and delightful. There is respect for and understanding of the military mission, as well as the state department's goals.

Fins Are Forever The romance is of course the most important part of this story and I loved it in Fins are Forever. I wish there were more kissing scenes between Lily and Quince but what Childs gives us is great! There was a mild make-out session between 2 other characters but it was all done very clean and I would say this book is appropriate for any age group! One of my favorite things about Tera Lynn Childs writing is that her stories are fun, easy going, delightful but so engaging that you are thinking about the story for a long time after reading it and it is hard not to compare every other mermaid book out there to this outstanding series! This was a great summer read that you should run out and buy even if you are not a young adult!

Flashback I really fail to see what all the uproar is about. I am an Upper West Side liberal, and disagree with almost every conservative viewpoint Dan Simmons appears to have. So what?! He created a completely plausible world and told a great story. I can read a book or see a movie and not necessarily agree with all of the creator's premises without that preventing my enjoyment of the work. I would strongly urge anyone who hasn't read Flashback yet to ignore the criticism about its politics. I couldn't put this book down.

Freddy and Fredericka The most enjoyable part of Freddy and Fredericka was the fact that the book evoked so many different reference points for me. The snappy one liners, word-play and somewhat less than dry British wit that marks the first portion of the book seemed one part Yes Minister (a Britcom that poked fun at British politicians and civil servants), one part Dickens and one part Monty Python. Freddy and Freddy's journeys through the U.S. to reconquer America contained some (distant) echoes of Mark Twain the old movie Sullivan's Travels (a pampered Hollywood movie star goes on a quest through Depression-era America in the guise of a hobo), and Kipling's The Man Who Would be King. All in all, despite a couple of flaws and false notes, I enjoyed Freddy and Fredericka immensely. The book turns reflective as it nears its conclusion but I think the zany adventures that precede the conclusion renders the change in tone and pace more effective.

Freeze In many ways, this book reads like an episode of The Twilight Zone with a little Tales from the Darkside mixed in for good measure. Nothing is explained, the ending is open to the reader's imagination. All we're left with are the sensations involved. It's like being plunked in the middle of a nightmare scenario and forced to fend for ourselves, which is refreshing, and also common with Pyle. Just as in Down the Drain, there isn't page after page of details about the nature of the monsters. They're there, they're frightening, and that's all you need to know. Is that enough? It damn well should be. There is only one aspect of the writing that I didn't like, and it's the single issue keeping it from receiving a perfect score. On more than one occasion, the internal dialogue of the characters' seemed to be too much for the given situation. There were a couple examples of ill-timed, ironic thoughts that I, personally, don't think would go through the mind of someone experiencing that kind of terror. It slowed the momentum for me a bit when this occurred, but thankfully this only happened a few times, five at most. I can forgive an author for trying too hard sometimes, and that's what those little snippets felt like to me. And it could also just have been my mood at the time, so my point dockage is very small. In conclusion, Freeze is a gem of a short novel that will leave you panting by the end. It's the perfect creature feature, hitting all the right emotional notes, making you care, cringe, and rattle your teeth at the same time. And once you finish, you'll never be able to hear a scratch at your window on a cold winter night and pass it off as nothing again. There will always be that nibble of panic in the back of your mind that says, but what if...

Gears of the City The good part is that at points, hope shines through there are wins here, even though people are driven by their obsessions when it comes to some things. There is a lot of just downright bizarre that feels out of place, but this is a great vision of who we are. How we deal with adverse events, and how we overcome our own limitations. Even though the book is not for the depressed already, it is worth reading if you like your science fiction with a dash of politics, a large helping of darkness, and some just plain old outrageous behavior. Rated this book five of five, at times hard to read, but overall enjoyable, with moments you have to re read things again just to make sure you get it. Not a stay up all night book, this is more one of those read a chapter, think on it, read another chapter, think on it kind of books.

Gradisil An ambitious, well formed future history. Benefits from a high quality of writing and very interesting approach. Roberts is clever enough to make the characters serving the 'good' cause often flawed and unsympathetic, and those serving the 'bad' cause quite appealing. Across the book he provides a wonderful portrait of complexity and political ambiguity.

Heart of Light This is complicated fantasy with a lot of different things to keep in mind but it's not overwhelming. The basis is good, the world is great and the plot is pretty solid. But the romance aspect? Sadly this book suffers from the common aliment of Love at First Sight. Or rather, love for no reasonable basis but mutual physical attraction. And not with who'd you think either. Also way too much of the quest aspect is just laid of for our heroes by wise people and various gods/goddess they meet along the way. Annoying. They never seem to figure anything out on their own. Anything important anyway. All in all though it's a good novel for the first in a trilogy.

Helpless: Caledonia's Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy, and How the Law Failed All of Us This book is not about aboriginal land claims. The book is not about the wholesale removal of seven generations of indigenous youngsters from their reserves and families - this was by dint of federal government policy - or the abuse dished out to many of them at the residential schools into which they were arbitrarily placed or the devastating effects that haunt so many today. This book is not about the dubious merits of the reserve system which may better serve those who wish to see native people fail than those who want desperately for them to succeed. I do not in any way make light of these issues, and they are one way or another in the background of everything that occurred in Caledonia.

House of Secrets He has once again weaved a taut and page turning tale. New characters in this book. But, like his previous, the reader becomes quickly involved and enthralled with each character. Whether they are not so nice, or interestingly evil. And of course, you pull for the pure of heart. I would urge anyone that delights in a Author that has the ability to create such vivid characters to select this book! Today...now!! Oh, and by the way. Do a search for Tim Cockney. You will love is writing as well!

I Heart You, You Haunt Me He's here, in this room, right now. Jackson. Ava knows he's dead, and that it's impossible, but that doesn't stop her from being able to smell his unique, sandalwood aftershave. Or seeing his image in her mirror, hearing his words in her head, and finding him in her dreams. Her boyfriend is a ghost, and it's Ava's fault he's dead to begin with.

Land of the Headless There are three crimes that result in beheading: Murder, rape and blasphemy. At the beginning of this splendid book, the protagonist is beheaded for "rape". The thing is, he is not killed. He now lives as one of the "headless" - a being whose consciousnes is stored in an electronic device near his waist.

The resulting tale is nothing short of brilliant. Social commentary also abounds.

But as the decade draws to an end and fascism tightens its grip on Europe, the fact that Alec is Jewish places his life in grave danger. Bella and Edward take the boy on a terrifying train journey out of Italy one they have no reason to believe any of them will survive.

Meat This grisly tale left an indelible mark on my psyche, but don't think this is just a superficial attempt to use sickening detail to carry an empty narrative. There is much more to this thought provoking tale, which not only enjoys some brilliant and recognisable insights into fear, but also asks you to consider what for you is an `acceptable' level of suffering.

Mixed Blood: A Thriller Mixed Blood''s South African setting is as oppressive as a midsummer''s heatstroke. You can almost feel the wind and smell the foreign sweat spilling through the pages. Also a welcomed difference in popular crime novels. The characters are pretty well drawn and the dialogue is pretty spot-on. The atmosphere is dark and hopeless and there''s always a sense of suspense and dread. We''re never quite sure who is going to do what. Yes, there are some predictable moments but all in all this is an extremely solid outing. I loved every page of it, honestly.

Mysteria Nights I love love love the Mysteria stories! So I was all atwitter when the new book came up in preorder. Needless to say, my excitement dimmed considerably when I opened the box, only to see the cover state the now obvious news that this was a compilation of the two previously issued anthologies 'Myteria' and 'Mysteria Lane'. This is not to say I didn't sit right down and read the book, as the stories are great every time I read them. But for those of you who did NOT preorder this but are anticipating a NEW read, it is sadly not so. If you do read any of these authors and have NOT seen the previous anthologies, this is a great way to meet the residents of Mysteria: a truly unique town somewhere in the Rockies, populated by all kinds of people who have issues unlike you or I (except in love). All the authors, in their particularly talented voices can tell a great yarn, and they link the stories through common characters in this town. If you like a bit of the paranormal, humor and snark in your romance, this is the anthology for you.

Never a Bride I found this one absolutely charming. I couldn't put the book down. A real plus in this story is the intelligence of it's two main characters, Camden and Mirabella. Never did I feel the book deteriorate into silliness as could have easily been the case given the circumstances. I know when a book is particularly good when I find myself recommending it to total strangers in book stores. Such is the case with NEVER A BRIDE. An absolutely delightful read. Highly entertaining.

New Model Army The protagonist is part of a small mercenary army, that clashes against global satellite systems and UAVs with wikis, google maps and remote control planes. A fair amount of the book is about these conflicts, with scenes that read like the home turf battles in the game Modern Warfare 2. However, this is not simply an action based book. Running through the book are the ideals of democracy and the way we are all connected through technology. These philosophical aspects aren't too heavy though and are simply presented conversationally. The only problem I had with this book was the ending. I found it a little convoluted which was a shame considering the rest of the novel.

No Rest for the Dead No Rest for the Dead is a well told, well laid out and plotted mystery, I couldn't stop reading it. It's rather like a well designed quilt, all of the separate pieces are finally stitched together to make a solid piece. It's the fine stitching and the weaving of the threads that bind the pieces that make the finished quilt strong and sturdy. That's what you have in No Rest for the Dead. A strong and well crafted story.

Not Less Than Gods The novel still is not entirely effective I think it would have been stronger had Baker dipped more into the ancillary characters' heads, and it is rather slow starting and episodic throughout. It is also more steampunk than I expected, paying far more attention to the workings of all the wondrous machines than were really warranted by the story. But I think that if I did not know the Company novels already, I would have been quite moved by the climax as Ludbridge watches Edward realize what exactly he is.

Odin's Wolves Packed with battles, blood and thrilling adventure, the third blood-stirring chapter in the story of Raven and his fellow Viking warriors is historical fiction at its very best. We lusted for an even greater prize... It is the one prize that can never be lost or stolen or burnt. And we would find it in Miklagard... Raven and the Wolfpack have suffered. Good men have died and the treasures they fought so hard for

have been lost. But to such men as these there is something more valuable than silver. That thing is fame for fame is the saga-story that a Viking warrior leaves behind when he dies. Now the sea road leads to Constantinople, which Norsemen call Miklagard, the Great City, for it is there that they might find both riches and glory. But the Great City is far away and the voyage there takes the Fellowship in to unknown waters where they face new enemies. From the wind-whipped marshes of the Carmargue to the crumbling walls and arenas of a decaying Rome, Raven must fight harder for his life than ever before. He must prove himself to others and he must watch his back too, for an old enemy is sharpening his treacherous claws. The young warrior with the blood-tainted eye will even challenge the Norns of fate who, it is said, have spun his doom. But the Valkyries are stalking, eager for new heroes to take to Odin's hall. The clash of sword and axe and spear will ring out in Miklagard and the Fellowship will pay a high price in blood for the fame they seek.

Pirate Sun The book is filled with wonders: a flood in low/zero gravity, two cities literaly going to war, a space battle involving wooden ships and a free-fall city. It reminds me in parts of Jack Vance, with its brilliant inventiveness and rich societies. But Schroeder also has a talent for characterization, and Chaison and Venera Fanning are a brilliantly drawn, interesting, and likeable pair of characters. Part of what makes them this is that they grow as the series goes on. In the first book, Venera is ruthless and not very likeable. The second books is not only the story of how she escapes and re-establishes herself but one of her own growth as a person. Likewise, Chaison grows over the course of the novels. Schroeder has become one of our best current SF writers.

Rogue Kenneth Chinran commanded the elite unit assigned to take out an entire planet in a terrible war. Millions died billions more perished in the aftermath. Shadow Chaser While they march forward, frightening adversaries pursue them. Besides The Nameless One, another Dark Lord the Master also wants to gain access to the legendary grim tomb. Their respective hordes give chase. As the Shadows leave behind fallen comrades they fight for their lives against nasty ogre, elves, the Dark One's minion, and a worse malevolence with extraordinary power. The second Chronicles of Siala (see Shadow Prowler) is an enjoyable quest fantasy that uses humor to diffuse the heat of battle. The story line is at its best at the moments the tension is high for instance when a teammate dies. The jocularity fails to translate very well (assuming it works in Russian) and only slows down an otherwise fine thriller held together by the beleaguered Shadow Harold.

Spin Spin is a superb novel full of Big Ideas, but those Big Ideas don't come at the expense of rich character development as is so often the case with books of this sort. Wilson has a real knack for creating characters one can empathize with and can really grow to care about. The family relationship depicted here, between the narrator, Tyler Dupree, and his childhood friends Jason (the genius) and Diane (his first, unrequited love), is the real driving force of this novel, and is what makes it such a compelling page-turner. The prose is clean and fluid, and Wilson expertly paces the book, keeping the reader engaged and anxious to find out what comes next. This can be tricky in a novel that spans several subjective years (and billions of relativistic years), but Wilson pulls it off marvelously.

Sun of Suns The most impressive aspect of this book has to be the sheer creativity of its world-building: the bizarre world of Virga which seems to be equal parts Wild West, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Star Trek is nevertheless utterly convincing (in part because of the even more bizarre Universe, only hinted at, in which Virga lies). Likewise, Schroeder doesn't forget the little details, such as what can, and does, happen when bullets don't hit their intended targets. Of course, though, world-building alone can't carry a book, and, just as in Schroeder's earlier works, "Sun of Suns" doesn't disappoint. Schroeder constantly kept me guessing as to what the protagonist, Hayden Griffin, was going to do and that includes even after Schroeder revealed the book's final surprise. My only criticism, if it can be called that, is this book is relatively short: it is at most half the length of "Ventus."

The Dark Deeps I must confess that these stories are especially fun for those who are familiar with their source material. Drawing on Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Dickens, Hugo (to a lesser extent in this volume than in the first Hunchback Assignments) and even Arthur Conan Doyle, this addition to the extremely popular Steampunk genre will be a hit with kids. The isolating cabin wherein Modo finds himself trapped at the bottom of the Ocean as well as the gruesome circumstances surrounding Modo and Octavia's missing colleague and the re-appearance of the Clockwork Guild add the thrills and chills needed for the Hallowe'en Season. Kids and adults with a penchant for rollicking yarns (in tradition of yore) will be beguiled by Slade's inventive world.

Whitechapel Gods The plot here follows an underground group, each with his own reasons for disliking the status quo, in their attempt to bring down the powerful creatures ruling Whitechapel. The plot is fast-paced and fairly gripping, and one does come to be fairly invested in the plucky rebels and their battles. The structure of the thing is a little flimsy, but I'm not so sure that really matters so much in this case, given that it's a fast read, and the pace doesn't really leave one much chance to dwell upon the possible plot holes. Recommended as a vacation book or for other circumstances in which entertainment is key. Not recommended for critical reading practice.

Winter's Bone Woodrell has definitely captured what it is like to live in a subculture that is so isolated from the bigger world around it. The Ozark area is such a paradox of beautiful lodges and resorts and, on the other hand, pockets of isolated, povertystricken rural poor. Woodrell's portrayal of the Dolly clan is, unfortunately, not unbelievable. Ree's search for her father who has skipped his bail reflects a parallel search for a better life she doesn't know where to look for him and her only idea of a better life for herself is to join the Army. The effects that meth have had on the rural poor is devastating. That together with generations of family hardships, feuds, intermarriage, and poverty paints a pretty depressing picture.

Exiles I was sucked in from the first chapter filled with foreboding mystery, and carried on a journey across the globe, into the Himalayas, and ultimately into one's heart. The characters feel real and the suspenseful plot keeps you turning pages. "Exiles" is a wonderful first novel by Cary Groner. I look forward to more!

Against All Enemies This book can not be written in any way by Tom Clancy. I have always been a huge Clancy fan and have read everyone of his books. The book is ok but if you read alot of clancy then you can tell right away by the writing style and the character devolpment that someone of a lesser skill is writing this. Also the plot line is very similiar to an edition of the Mack Bolan books!

Bloodspell If you enjoy books with good character development and a lot of action then this is a book for you. I like how the ending is pretty much sewn up, but there are some open threads I could see possibly leading to another book, which would be awesome, but if there is not another book in the works involving Christian and Tori, I would be okay with that as well.

Breaking Silence What I love most about this series is the lead character - the wonderful but flawed Chief Burkholder. Linda Castillo has created a deep and layered character here and she continues to allow Kate to grow ( and not grow ) and become a true emotional epicenter for the series. Kate isn't perfect and she makes mistakes but each mistake seems a natural one, and more genuine than that of other female leads. For one thing, Kate is not perfect - she drinks too much, she has intimacy issues and she's got a temper. In lesser hands, these traits might seem cliche, but Linda Castillo imbues heart into her flawed heroine, heart and a dark past that Kate is working to overcome. It's a great dichotomy that Castillo handles incredibly well. Without a doubt, this is a great novel - and a wonderful continuation of Kate Burkholder's story. Highly recommended.

The Jefferson Lies: Exposing the Myths You've Always Believed About Thomas Jefferson 2012 | ISBN-10: 1595554599 | 304 pages | EPUB | 0,6 MB America, in so many ways, has forgotten. Its roots, its purpose, its identity?all have become shrouded behind a veil of political correctness bent on twisting the nation's founding, and its founders, to fit within a misshapen modern world. The time has come to remember again. In The Jefferson Lies, prominent historian David Barton sets out to correct the distorted image of a once-beloved founding father, Thomas Jefferson. To do so, Barton tackles seven myths head-on, including: Did Thomas Jefferson really have a child by his young slave girl, Sally Hemings? Did he write his own Bible, excluding the parts of Christianity with which he disagreed? Was he a racist who opposed civil rights and equality for black Americans? Did he, in his pursuit of separation of church and state, advocate the secularizing public life? Through Jefferson's own words and the eyewitness testimony of contemporaries, Barton repaints a portrait of the man from Monticello as a visionary, an innovator, a man who revered Jesus, a classical Renaissance man?and a man whose pioneering stand for liberty and God-given inalienable rights fostered a better world for this nation and its posterity. For America, the time to remember these truths again is now.

Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies 2012 | ISBN: 0307888754, 0307990680 | 416 pages | EPUB | 10,4 MB In his celebrated bestsellers Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat, Ben Macintyre told the dazzling true stories of a remarkable WWII double agent and of how the Allies employed a corpse to fool the Nazis and assure a decisive victory. In Double Cross, Macintyre returns with the untold story of the grand final deception of the war and of the extraordinary spies who achieved it. On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and suffered an astonishingly low rate of casualties. D-Day was a stunning military accomplishment, but it was also a masterpiece of trickery. Operation Fortitude, which protected and enabled the invasion, and the Double Cross system, which specialized in turning German spies into double agents, deceived the Nazis into believing that the Allies would attack at Calais and Norway rather than Normandy. It was the most sophisticated and successful deception operation ever carried out, ensuring that Hitler kept an entire army awaiting a fake invasion, saving thousands of lives, and securing an Allied victory at the most critical juncture in the war. The story of D-Day has been told from the point of view of the soldiers who fought in it, the tacticians who planned it, and the generals who led it. But this epic event in world history has never before been told from the perspectives of the key individuals in the Double Cross System. These include its director (a brilliant, urbane intelligence officer), a colorful assortment of MI5 handlers (as well as their counterparts in Nazi intelligence), and the five spies who formed Double Cross’s nucleus: a dashing Serbian playboy, a Polish fighter-pilot, a bisexual Peruvian party girl, a deeply eccentric Spaniard with a diploma in chicken farming and a volatile Frenchwoman, whose obsessive love for her pet dog very nearly wrecked the entire plan. The D-Day spies were, without question, one of the oddest military units ever assembled, and their success depended on the delicate, dubious relationship between spy and spymaster, both German and British. Their enterprise was saved from catastrophe by a shadowy sixth spy whose heroic sacrifice is revealed here for the first time. With the same depth of research, eye for the absurd and masterful storytelling that have made Ben Macintyre an international bestseller, Double Cross is a captivating narrative of the spies who wove a web so intricate it ensnared Hitler’s army and carried thousands of D-Day troops across the Channel in safety.

Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture English | 2011-01-25 | ISBN: 0061711527 | 256 pages | EPUB | 7.49 mb The acclaimed author of the groundbreaking bestseller Schoolgirls reveals the dark side of pink and pretty: the rise of the girlie-girl, she warns, is not that innocent. Pink and pretty or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as a source—the source—of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages.

But, realistically, how many times can you say no when your daughter begs for a pint-size wedding gown or the latest Hannah Montana CD? And how dangerous is pink and pretty anyway—especially given girls' successes in the classroom and on the playing field? Being a princess is just make-believe, after all; eventually they grow out of it. Or do they? Does playing Cinderella shield girls from early sexualization—or prime them for it? Could today's little princess become tomorrow's sexting teen? And what if she does? Would that make her in charge of her sexuality—or an unwitting captive to it? Those questions hit home with Peggy Orenstein, so she went sleuthing. She visited Disneyland and the international toy fair, trolled American Girl Place and Pottery Barn Kids, and met beauty pageant parents with preschoolers tricked out like Vegas showgirls. She dissected the science, created an online avatar, and parsed the original fairy tales. The stakes turn out to be higher than she—or we—ever imagined: nothing less than the health, development, and futures of our girls. From premature sexualization to the risk of depression to rising rates of narcissism, the potential negative impact of this new girlie-girl culture is undeniable—yet armed with awareness and recognition, parents can effectively counterbalance its influence in their daughters' lives. Cinderella Ate My Daughter is a must-read for anyone who cares about girls, and for parents helping their daughters navigate the rocky road to adulthood.

Everything Is Obvious: *Once You Know the Answer English | 2011-03-29 | ISBN: 0385531680 | 352 pages | EPUB | 2.26 mb Why is the Mona Lisa the most famous painting in the world? Why did Facebook succeed when other social networking sites failed? Did the surge in Iraq really lead to less violence? How much can CEO’s impact the performance of their companies? And does higher pay incentivize people to work hard? If you think the answers to these questions are a matter of common sense, think again. As sociologist and network science pioneer Duncan Watts explains in this provocative book, the explanations that we give for the outcomes that we observe in life—explanation that seem obvious once we know the answer—are less useful than they seem. Drawing on the latest scientific research, along with a wealth of historical and contemporary examples, Watts shows how common sense reasoning and history conspire to mislead us into believing that we understand more about the world of human behavior than we do; and in turn, why attempts to predict, manage, or manipulate social and economic systems so often go awry. It seems obvious, for example, that people respond to incentives; yet policy makers and managers alike frequently fail to anticipate how people will respond to the incentives they create. Social trends often seem to have been driven by certain influential people; yet marketers have been unable to identify these “influencers” in advance. And although successful products or companies always seem in retrospect to have succeeded because of their unique qualities, predicting the qualities of the next hit product or hot company is notoriously difficult even for experienced professionals. Only by understanding how and when common sense fails, Watts argues, can we improve how we plan for the future, as well as understand the present—an argument that has important implications in politics, business, and marketing, as well as in science and everyday life.

Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions English | 2011-03-08 | ISBN: 1591843790 | 211 pages | EPUB | 2.50 mb Enchantment, as defined by bestselling business guru Guy Kawasaki, is not about manipulating people. It transforms situations and relationships. It converts hostility into civility and civility into affinity. It changes the skeptics and cynics into the believers and the undecided into the loyal. Enchantment can happen during a retail transaction, a high-level corporate negotiation, or a Facebook update. And when done right, it's more powerful than traditional persuasion, influence, or marketing techniques. Kawasaki argues that in business and personal interactions, your goal is not merely to get what you want but to bring about a voluntary, enduring, and delightful change in other people. By enlisting their own goals and desires, by being likable and trustworthy, and by framing a cause that others can embrace, you can change hearts, minds, and actions. For instance, enchantment is what enabled . . . - A Peace Corps volunteer to finesse a potentially violent confrontation with armed guerrillas. - A small cable channel (E!) to win the TV broadcast rights to radio superstar Howard Stern. - A seemingly crazy new running shoe (Vibram Five Fingers) to methodically build a passionate customer base. - A Canadian crystal maker (Nova Scotian Crystal) to turn observers into buyers. This book explains all the tactics you need to prepare and launch an enchantment campaign; to get the most from both push and pull technologies; and to enchant your customers, your employees, and even your boss. It shows how enchantment can turn difficult decisions your way, at times when intangibles mean more than hard facts. It will help you overcome other people's entrenched habits and defy the not-always-wise "wisdom of the crowd." Kawasaki's lessons are drawn from his tenure at one of the most enchanting organizations of all time, Apple, as well as his decades of experience as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist. There are few people in the world more qualified to teach you how to enchant people. As Kawasaki writes, "Want to change the world? Change caterpillars into butterflies? This takes more than run-of-themill relationships. You need to convince people to dream the same dream that you do." That's a big goal, but one that's possible for all of us.

Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival English | 2011-06-07 | ISBN: 1400069467 | 384 pages | EPUB | 2.24 mb When Maziar Bahari left London in June 2009 to cover Iran’s presidential election, he assured his pregnant fiancée, Paola, that he’d be back in just a few days, a week at most. Little did he know, as he kissed her good-bye, that he would spend the next three months in Iran’s most notorious prison, enduring brutal interrogation sessions at the hands of a man he knew only by his smell: Rosewater. For the Bahari family, wars, coups, and revolutions are not distant concepts but intimate realities they have suffered for generations: Maziar’s father was imprisoned by the shah in the 1950s, and his sister by Ayatollah Khomeini in the 1980s. Alone in his cell at Evin Prison, fearing the worst, Maziar draws strength from his memories of the courage of his father and sister in the face of torture, and hears their voices speaking to him across the years. He dreams of being with Paola in London, and imagines all that she and his rambunctious, resilient eighty-four-year-old mother must be doing to campaign for his release. During the worst of his encounters with Rosewater, he silently repeats the names of his loved ones, calling on their strength and love to protect him and praying he will be released in time for the birth of his first child. A riveting, heart-wrenching memoir, Then They Came for Me offers insight into the past fifty years of regime change in Iran, as well as the future of a country where the democratic impulses of the youth continually clash with a government that becomes more totalitarian with each passing day. An intimate and fascinating account of contemporary Iran, it is also the moving and wonderfully written story of one family’s extraordinary courage in the face of repression.

Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should, Too ISBN: 0061567558 | 2011 | EPUB | 272 pages | 1 MB Investing isn't a man's world anymore—and that's a good thing for individual portfolios, Wall Street, and the world's financial system. Warren Buffett and the women of the world have one thing in common: They are better investors than the average man. Psychologists and scientists have shown that women have the kind of temperaments that help them achieve long-term success in the market. The calamities of the past several years have only provided more statistical and anecdotal evidence of the same. Here are just a few characteristics of female investors that distinguish them from their male counterparts: Women spend more time researching their investment choices and tend to take less risk than men do. This prevents them from chasing "hot" tips and trading on whims. Women are also more likely to seek out information that challenges their assumptions. One study found that men trade 45 percent more often than women do, and although men are more confident investors, they are also more susceptible to becoming overconfident. By trading more often—and without enough research—men reduce their net returns and increase transaction costs and capital gains taxes. Women aren't as susceptible to peer pressure as men are, which results in a more levelheaded, patient approach to investing. Women have less testosterone than men do (not a surprise, we know). New and continually unfolding science points to the possibility that testosterone is responsible for herdlike risk-taking behavior from men in the financial markets. This book shows that women, with their patience and good decision making, epitomize the Foolish investment philosophy, as well as the investment temperament of the most successful investor in history: Warren Buffett. While men may be brash, compulsive, and overly daring, women tend to be more studious, skeptical, and reasonable. The book will empower and educate women—and the men smart enough to embrace a "feminine" investing style—on how to strengthen their portfolios and find success in the market.

A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School ISBN: 034551100X | 2009 | EPUB | 304 pages | 5 MB When fourteen-year-old Carlotta Walls walked up the stairs of Little Rock Central High School on September 25, 1957, she and eight other black students only wanted to make it to class. But the journey of the “Little Rock Nine, as they came to be known, would lead the nation on an even longer and much more turbulent path, one that would challenge prevailing attitudes, break down barriers, and forever change the landscape of America. For Carlotta and the eight other children, simply getting through the door of this admired academic institution involved angry mobs, racist elected officials, and intervention by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was forced to send in the 101st Airborne to escort the Nine into the building. But entry was simply the first of many trials. Breaking her silence at last and sharing her story for the first time, Carlotta Walls has written an engrossing memoir that is a testament not only to the power of a single person to make a difference but also to the sacrifices made by families and communities that found themselves a part of history.

Dreamland: Travels Inside the Secret World of Roswell and Area 51 ISBN: 0679456511 | 1998 | EPUB | 336 pages | 2 MB There is a place in the Nevada desert the size of Belgium that doesn't officially exist. It is the airbase where test flights of our top-secret experimental military aircraft are conducted and --not coincidentally--where the conspiracy theorists insist the Pentagon is hiding UFOs and aliens. This is Dreamland--or Area 51. For Phil Patton, the idea of writing a travel account of a place he couldn't actually visit was irresistible. What he found was a world where Chick Yeager and the secret planes of the Cold War converged with the Nevada Test Site and alien landings at Roswell.

A think tank for aviation engineering, Dreamland can be seen from a summit outside the base's perimeter, a hundred miles north of Las Vegas. On Freedom Ridge, groups of airplane buffs gather with their camouflage outfits and binoculars. These are the Stealth chasers, the Skunkers, guys with code names like Agent X and Zero, hoping for a glimpse of the rumored raylike shapes of planes like Black Manta and "the mother ship." The most mysterious craft is Aurora, the successor to the legendary U-2, said to run on methane and fly as fast as Mach 6. Scanning the same horizon, the UFO buffs are looking for the hovering lights and doughnut-shaped contrails of alien aircraft. Are they looking at something sinister and mysterious? Imagined? Or more terrestrial than they think? Dreamland shows how much we need mystery in the information age, and how the cultures of nuclear power and airpower merge with the folklores of extraterrestrials and earthly conspiracies. Patton found people who found themselves in the mysteries of the place. John Lear, the son of aviation pioneer Bill Lear--who gave his name to the jet--served as a pilot for the CIA's Air America, but back home, he became fascinated by UFOs and eventually believed in it all: the underground bases, the alien-human hybrids, the secret treaties. But was he a true believer, or part of a disinformation campaign? Bob Lazar seems to know when the saucers will come, and has made three clear sightings at night along Dreamland's perimeter, but is his story real, or a vision of what's possible? Dreamland is an exploration of America's most secret place: the base for our experimental airplanes, the fount of UFO rumors, an offshoot of the Nevada Test Site. How this "blackspot" came to exist--its history, its creators, its spies and counterspies--is Phil Patton's tale. He tunnels into the subcultures of the conspiracy buffs, the true believers, and the aeronautic geniuses, creating a novelistic tour de force destined to make us all rethink our convictions about American know-how--and alien inventiveness.

Long Shot ISBN: 1439150222 | 2013 | EPUB | 384 pages | 2 MB Mike Piazza’s autobiography—the candid story of the greatest hitting catcher in the history of baseball, from his inauspicious draft selection to his Hall of Fame-worthy achievements and the unusual controversies that marked his career. Mike Piazza was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 baseball draft as a “courtesy pick.” The Dodgers never expected him to play for them—or anyone else. Mike had other ideas. Overcoming his detractors, he became the National League rookie of the year in 1993, broke the record for season batting average by a catcher, holds the record for career home runs at his position, and was selected as an All Star twelve times. Mike was groomed for baseball success by his ambitious, self-made father in Pennsylvania, a classic father-son American-dream story. With the Dodgers, Piazza established himself as baseball’s premier offensive catcher; but the team never seemed willing to recognize him as the franchise player he was. He joined the Mets and led them to the memorable 2000 World Series with their cross-town rivals, the Yankees. Mike tells the story behind his dramatic confrontation with Roger Clemens in that series. He addresses the steroid controversy that hovered around him and Major League Baseball during his time and provides valuable perspective on the subject. Mike also addresses the rumors of being gay and describes the thrill of his game-winning home run on September 21, 2001, the first baseball game played in New York after the 9/11 tragedy. Along the way, he tells terrific stories about teammates and rivals that baseball fans will devour.

Long Shot is written with insight, candor, humor, and charm. It’s surprising and inspiring, one of the great sports autobiographies.

And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II ISBN: 140003129X | 2004 | EPUB | 528 pages | 5 MB In World War II, 59,000 women voluntarily risked their lives for their country as U.S. Army nurses. When the war began, some of them had so little idea of what to expect that they packed party dresses; but the reality of service quickly caught up with them, whether they waded through the water in the historic landings on North African and Normandy beaches, or worked around the clock in hospital tents on the Italian front as bombs fell all around them. For more than half a century these women’s experiences remained untold, almost without reference in books, historical societies, or military archives. After years of reasearch and hundreds of hours of interviews, Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have created a dramatic narrative that at last brings to light the critical role that women played throughout the war. From the North African and Italian Campaigns to the Liberation of France and the Conquest of Germany, U.S. Army nurses rose to the demands of war on the frontlines with grit, humor, and great heroism. A long overdue work of history, And If I Perish is also a powerful tribute to these women and their inspiring legacy.

Why I Am Not a Muslim English | ISBN: 1591020115 | 2003 | EPUB | 428 pages | 807 KB Those who practice the Muslim faith have resisted examinations of their religion. They are extremely guarded about their religion, and what they consider blasphemous acts by sceptical Muslims and non-Muslims alike has only served to pique the world's curiosity. This critical examination reveals an unflattering picture of the faith and its practitioners. Nevertheless, it is the truth, something that has either been deliberately concealed by modern scholars or buried in obscure journals accessible only to a select few.

America's Secret War: Inside the Hidden Worldwide Struggle Between America and Its Enemies 2004 | ISBN: 0385512457, 0767917855 | English | 368 Pages | EPUB | 0.70 MB THE STARTLING TRUTH BEHIND AMERICA'S FOREIGN POLICY AND WAR EFFORT IN AFGHANISTAN, IRAQ, AND BEYOND--FROM THE FOUNDER OF THE COMPANY DUBBED BY BARRON'S AS "THE SHADOW CIA" Dubbed by Barron’s as “The Shadow CIA,” George Friedman’s global intelligence company, Stratfor, has provided analysis to Fortune 500 companies, news outlets, and even the U.S. government. Now Friedman delivers the geopolitical story that the mainstream media has been unable to uncover — the startling truth behind America’s foreign policy and war effort in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond. Stratfor, one of the world’s most respected private global intelligence firms, has an unmatched ability to provide clear perspective on the current geopolitical map. In AMERICA’S SECRET WAR, George Friedman identifies the United States’ most dangerous enemies, delves into presidential strategies of the last quarter century, and reveals the real reasons behind the attack of 9/11—and the Bush administration’s motivation for the war in Iraq. It describes in eyeopening detail America’s covert and overt efforts in the global war against terrorism: Not only are U.S. armies in combat on every continent, but since 9/11 the intelligence services of dozens of nations have been operating in close partnership with the CIA. Drawing on Stratfor’s vast information-gathering network, Friedman presents an insightful picture of today’s world that goes far beyond what is reported on television and in other news media. Al Qaeda’s war plans and how they led to 9/11 The threat of a suitcase nuclear bomb in New York and how that changed the course of the war. The deal the U.S. made with Russia and Iran which made the invasion of Afghanistan possible – and how those deals affect the United States today. How fear and suspicion of the Saudis after 9-11 tore apart the Bush-Saudi relationship and why Saudi Arabia’s closest friends in the administration became the Saudi’s worst enemies. The real reasons behind George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq and how WMD became the cover for a much deeper game. How the CIA miscalculated about Saddam Hussein’s and Iran’s real plans, leaving the U.S. bogged down in the war. How the war in Iraq began with a ruse, pretending that a “target of opportunity” attack on Saddam Hussein had presented itself. The real story about why the U.S. raises and lowers its alert status and why the United States can’t find and destroy al Qaeda. The strategic successes that are slowly leading the United States to victory AMERICA’S SECRET WAR is an unprecedented look at the new world war being waged behind-the-scenes today. It is sure to stir debate and capture headlines around the world.

Towers of Deception: The Media Cover-up of 9/11 English | 2006-09-01 | ISBN: 0865715734 | 416 pages | PDF | 3 MB A dozen carefully researched books have exposed the official story of 9/11 to be a terror fraud. Yet the mainstream media have monolithically failed to ask elementary questions about anomalies in this story. So-called alternative media have been little better. Towers of Deception explains why and prescribes actions to break out the truth. Authored by a lifelong journalist who was for thirty-five years a media critic, Towers of Deception provides twenty-six "exhibits" of evidence proving "beyond a reasonable doubt" that 9/11 was an inside job. It then presents case histories of de facto censorship by mainstream media and examines the psychological phenomenon of denial. "False flag" operations and psychological warfare are dealt with in detail, as is the "invisible government"-the powers pulling strings behind the scenes. Following a profile of Dr. David Ray Griffin as an authentic prophet of the 9/11 truth movement, Towers of Deception urges people to speak truth to power and challenge all media. Interspersed with photographs, diary entries, and inspiring profiles of those who see 9/11 truth as the Achilles' heel of the neocon agenda, Towers of Deception includes a professional-quality DVD produced by the author: The Great Conspiracy: The 9/11 News Special You Never Saw.

Birds of the World English | 1993 | 416 Pages | ISBN: 1564582965 | PDF | 60 MB It is hard to imagine a raison d'etre for this book, for its pretentions to be a field guide, as bruited on the dust cover, are absurd and are surprising coming from the authors, two highly respected ornithologists. What we have instead are species accounts of 800 birds, nine percent of the world total. These very brief accounts include a few sentences of general commentary; very small sections on range and nesting; a range map, color photo, and drawing showing scale; and one or two other small illustrations. This good selection of the world's birds, shown in quality photographs, is fine as far as it goes, but it is too limited to serve as an indentification guide. The traveler needs regional guides, and there are already many good ones for almost all parts of the world. Fun for browsing but otherwise only marginally useful.

Knight: The Warrior and World of Chivalry

English | 2011 | ISBN: 1849083126 | 240 pages | PDF | 54.3 MB From a life-long student of the medieval long sword and medieval history comes a comprehensive overview of the Age of the Knights. Jones shows that behind the popular image of the knight in shining armor lies a world that is both more complex and more fascinating. Were knights glory-seeking, bloodthirsty thugs that lay ravage to the Holy Land or simple Christians serving their king? Jones explores the myths and controversies behind their battle-effectiveness and chivalric code. He also examines knighthood as a "career path" and investigates the role of the knight in law and justice. Lavishly illustrated and drawing on rare first-hand accounts, this book reveals the world of the knight in all its tarnished glory.

For dessert, just try to choose between Charlie Trotter’s Chocolate-Praline Bread Pudding with Cinnamon Cream and Marcel Desaulnier’s Caramel-Banana–Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: An Unauthorized Autobiography (Audiobook) Abridged edition 2002 | 5 hours and 16 mins | ISBN: 0743529383 | M4B 64 kbps | 157 MB AN OUTRAGEOUS AUTOBIOGRAPHY PUBLISHED TO COINCIDE WITH THE MIRAMAX FILM STARRING DREW BARRYMORE, GEORGE CLOONY, AND SAM ROCKWELL, DIRECTED BY GEORGE CLOONY Suspense, excess, danger and exuberant fun come together in Chuck Barris' unlikely autobiography -- the tale of a wildly flamboyant 1970s television producer, better known as the infamous host of The Gong Show. What most people don't know is that Barris allegedly spent close to two decades as a decorated covert assassin for the CIA. Barris, who achieved tremendous success as the creator and producer of hit TV game shows such as The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game, claims to have joined the CIA as an agent in the early 1960s, infiltrated the Civil Rights movement, met with militant Muslims in Harlem, and traveled abroad in order to kill enemies of the United States. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is now a movie directed by and starring George Clooney, with Sam Rockwell as the author, but the original story is wild and gripping, spiced with intrigue, sex, bad behavior and plenty of great one-liners. It is destined to become a classic. uploaded (Part 1):

On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2013 | 8 hours and 57 mins | ISBN: 1442359323 | MP3 96 kbps | 387 MB From the author of the #1 New York Times mega-bestseller Inside of a Dog comes an equally smart, delightful, and startling exploration of how we perceive our surroundings. You are missing at least eighty percent of what is happening around you right now. You are missing what is happening in your body, in the distance, and right in front of you.

In reading these words, you are ignoring an unthinkably large amount of information that continues to bombard all of your senses. The hum of the fluorescent lights; the ambient noise in the room; the feeling of the chair against your legs or back; your tongue touching the roof of your mouth; the tension you are holding in your shoulders or jaw; the constant hum of traffic or a distant lawnmower; the blurred view of your own shoulders and torso in your peripheral vision; a chirp of a bug or whine of a kitchen appliance. Hidden in Plain Sight begins with inattention. It is not meant to help you focus on your reading of Tolstoy; it is not about how to multitask. It is not about how to avoid falling asleep at a lecture or during your grandfather’s tales of boyhood misadventures. Rather, it is about attending to the joys of the unattended, the perceived “ordinary.” Horowitz encourages us to rediscover the extraordinary things that we are missing in our ordinary activities. Even when engaged in the simplest of activities—taking a walk around the block—we pay so little attention to most of what is right before us that we are sleepwalkers in our own lives. So turn off the phone and portable electronics and get into the real world, where you’ll find there are worlds within worlds within worlds. uploaded (Part 1):

You'll Like It Here (Everybody Does) (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2011 | 6 hours and 35 mins | ISBN: 0307915964 | MP3 128 kbps | 329 MB While Meggie and David Blue are from another planet, they're a lot like Earth kids, with similar hopes and dreams, and can't wait to grow up. BUT they also have GROSSLY UNIQUE qualities, such as blue streaks in their hair that pop up randomly and language skills that sound like nothing on this planet. The story takes these alien kids, along with their mother and grandfather, by accident, to a far planet in which the society is not only oppressive but hostile to individual freedom. People are kept submissive through drugs and brainwashing. The Blues, who have spent time in free societies recognize the upside-down-ness of this world. They're almost helpless to do anything, but do what they can, plan their escape, and vow to help others. uploaded (Part 1):

The Permaculture Handbook: Garden Farming for Town and Country 2012 | ISBN-10: 0865716668 | 480 pages | EPUB | 16 MB The urban landscape has swallowed vast swaths of prime farmland across North America. Imagine how much more self-reliant our communities would be if thirty million acres of lawns were made productive again. This comprehensive manual casts garden farming as both an economic opportunity and a strategy for living well with less money. It shows how, by mimicking the intelligence of nature and applying appropriate technologies such as solar and environmental design, permaculture can: Create an abundance of fresh, nourishing local produce Reduce dependence on expensive, polluting fossil fuels Drought-proof our cities and countryside Convert waste into wealth Permaculture is about working with the earth and with each other to repair the damage of industrial overreach and to enrich the living world that sustains us. The Permaculture Handbook is the definitive practical North American guide to this revolutionary practice, and is a must-read for anyone concerned about creating food security, resilience, and a legacy of abundance rather than depletion.
