A Study in Sherlock "A Study in Sherlock" is a compilation of different short stories by various authors, with some sort of relation to Sherlock Holmes. This is a fantastic idea, and even better, fantastically executed. I really enjoyed all the different takes on this same idea from a comic book-take, to modern stories, to "fill in the blank" stories, all were wonderful. There's a lovely light-hearted tone that permeates the novel and really allows you revel in the stories. My only qualm was that there wasn't a Mary Russell story! :) There really is a something for everyone.

With humor and bloody battles, Pelegrimas kept me turning the pages way past my bedtime. And the end of the book is only the beginning. I can't wait to read the second book in the Skinners series to find out what happens next.

Clockwise CLOCKWISE is a smart, engaging read, a sure hit for lovers of time travel or the occasional history buff. I immediately liked Casey, her awkwardness, and felt like she could be a close friend. Casey's story doesn't disappoint. It refreshingly lacks the overzealous angst common to some YA reads and packs in the values of honest friendships and family relationships with a heart-warming, twist-at-the-end punch. Elle Strauss is a writer to watch.
Clockwiser: Book 2 in the Clockwise Series I enjoyed this as much as the first book, although I wasn't convinced by the neighbor character. I felt he was there only as a point of conflict for Nath and Casey but they already had enough conflict to deal with. That would really be my only complaint. Other than that, this is a strong follow on from book one and I'm looking forward to more.
Concrete Gods I really enjoyed this story. An interesting collaboration. It's got hints of Lovecraft and some dry humor is very well paced and written.

Crusade There is quite a large cast of characters in Crusade. This has the potential to be confusing, as the book, while told in third person, often jumps in scenery. For example, I was reading about a fight going down in Spain, then the book would jump to a character in New Orleans. I did not really mind the jumping, as I felt it kept the story fresh. As for the characters, it was give and take for me. There is a priest named Father Juan, who is the teacher of the slayers. I thought he was fascinating. Then, of course, there was the main character, Jenn, who I will admit I felt was a bit stale. I mean, I have read her character before, girl who thinks she is not unique or special, but it turns out she is a snowflake after all. I thought the side characters were much more engaging. Jamie, one of the hunters, is a former IRA member. He's hot-blooded, quick tempered, and ready to jump into any battle. He's clearly battling with some inner-demons. THEN we have Eriko, who is the Hunter, meaning she got to sip the magic juice. Eriko is Japanese, and the story of why she decides to go to hunter school is fascinating. As far as the writing goes, the story is very fun and full of action. However, I did not think Crusade was on level with the writing quality of, say, A Northern Light or The Book Thief. Although, I feel when you read a vampire novel, do you really expect a literary masterpiece? I certainly do not. I expect escapism, blood, and perhaps a bit of fun, which is precisely what I got from Crusade.
Dangerous Games: A Novel of Suspense Abby and Tess are interesting characters, as is the kidnapper, William Kolb. The remaining characters are pretty onedimensional the AD of the LA FBI Office is the stereotypical character of a stuffed shirt bureaucrat who cares more about image and publicity than anything else. But that's okay, because they are incidental to the main theme of the book, which is an exploration of what happens when people don't play by the rules.

Deadly Descendant
Olympian Phoebe the Oracle accompanied by Cyrus Constantine visit the Liberi to discuss her latest vision about one of Anderson's team pretending to be Anubis' Descendants attacking mortals in the DC area. She says if the humans catch this serial killer, they will learn of the existence of the Liberi and the Olympians. Nikki investigates, but Phoebe underestimated, probably on purpose, who the predator behind the hell hounds is. The second Nikki Glass urban fantasy (see Dark Descendent) is an exciting thriller that feels like a paranormal hardboiled detective tale. Nikki is an intriguing protagonist who still struggles with the concept that due to abetting an Immortal's suicide, she has become an Immortal. Sub-genre fans will enjoy her take no prisoners attitude (just ask Emma the Liberi or a coke bottle) as she provides readers with a fascinating tour of the jackal underbelly of DC.
Gift This story has 4 main characters, 3 girls and a boy, Daisy, Danielle, Vivi, and Kevin. Each of the characters has an important role to play. Daisy is electric, Vivi can talk to a ghost, Kevin is Daisy's Boyfriend, he is good at research, and has a form of epilepsy that plays into the story, and Danielle is Daisy's best friend, who feels a bit left out of the group, though she does have the same dreams as Daisy.

Happy Hour
It's a great 'fish out of water' story, which provides just the right mix of realism and fantastical scenarios to make it perfect escapism. This is aided by the Transatlatic settings and the dipping into the interesting worlds of high-end horticulture and shallow celebrity. There are plenty of twists and turns, some signposted, some out of left-field, but they aren't so ludicrous that it breaks the suspension-of-disbelief. The characters are very well fleshed-out and, most importantly, very likeable (something that usually turns me off the genre).
Home by Nightfall I am a Alexis Harrington fan. I did not read Home by Morning, the book before this one. I stayed away from it because of the love triangle. I don't really care for what love triangles do to my mind and heart. But, for some reason, I must have pre ordered this, because it popped up on my Kindle. Since I love Harrington, I read it. Oh my! I went back and forth and back and forth. I didn't know who to root for. This was an amazingly written novel. I wouldn't have expected any less.

Jet In Jet, Russell Blake doesn't ease you into the beginning with this book, he starts you off running and you don't stop until the end. I'm not an arms master - couldn't tell you the difference between a Saturday Night Special and a Glock but Russell Blake broke open a world where fire power, spy apparatus, and kill or be-killed moves are an every day occurrence, and delivered it in such a way that I was both fascinated and wide-eyed with the knowledge I gained. Don't forget to dust your passport off because the plot carries you from country to country. From Monaco to Punta Gorda, you get to see both picturesque waterfronts and the sights, sounds and smells of third world countries. Russell Blake plunks you right smack dab in the middle of it all.

Secrets in the Dark (Chimera Chronicles) Karen Blakely has written a very pleasant, escapist book that was a pleasure to read. Even though this is not my normal genre, this book held my interest all the way through.
Silver Justice Russell Bake has outdone himself with his new book, Silver Justice. This book has everything. A glamorous female FBI Special Agent, with enough personal issues to keep anyone totally preoccupied. A task force she supervises that is charged with finding a serial killer who appears to be invisible and without motive. If that isn't enough, there's a contract out on her, and she doesn't have a clue why. But wait, that isn't all, and frankly, the thing I haven't mentioned yet is the reason I've been excited about this book, since I first got wind of it. If you have any questions about how we got into this global financial quagmire that doesn't seem to have an end, Russell answers them all in Silver Justice.
Lankhmar Book 2: Swords Against Death After a self-imposed exile, our heroes the legendary Farfhrd and Gray Mouser, are back to their old shenanigans in the sinful city of Lankhmar. Shortly after their return, they find themselves hypnotically drawn across Newhorn's Outer Sea to lands unknown, only to have to survive a perilous journey to again get back to Lankhmar the closest thing they have to a home. Along with their other misadventures, they finally come to terms with the deaths of their true-loves.
Lankhmar Volume 4: Swords Against Wizardry After a somewhat disappointing third volume in the Lankhmar series, Fritz Leiber is back to form in Swords Against Wizardry. This book contains four stories about Fafhrd the big red-headed barbarian, and The Gray Mouser, the small wily magician-thief. Three of the stories come from the pulp magazine Fantastic and the first story was created for this volume as an introduction. The stories fit so well together that they almost feel like a novel.
Lankhmar Book 1: Swords And Deviltry I've heard of the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series for as long as I've been reading fantasy but never bothered to pick them up. I'm always leery of starting long series. I took the opportunity with the new reprints of this series to jump in and start from the beginning. I'm not disappointed in the least. While all the familiar fantasy trappings are here (the evil wizards, thieves guilds and helpless princess) they are done in a fresh way that makes this older series look more modern than most of the new books out. The cities are well
developed and rich with a detailed history that is drawn with a quick sentence or two. Just the description of a mason's office adds a depth that automatically gives the city deep dimensions.

Lankhmar Book 6: Swords and Ice Magic While this isn't a novel, Fritz Leiber only wrote one novel of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, the short stories do fit together to make a nice, overhanging plot. Starring Death, the sea, and the Gods, some from there and some from here, the book is full of adventure, action, and mystery.
Lankhmar Book 3: Swords in the Mist Leiber's sword books stand alone in heroic fantasy for their gallows humor, perverse plots, and decadent settings. He treats his heroes with a respect, compassion, and maturity not common in fantasy or horror writing.
The Ambassador's Wife It looks like I have found another author to add to my "favorites" list. "The Ambassador's Wife" is the first Jake Needham book that I have read - and - that I could hardly wait to get back to to reading my novel - says it all, I think. Inspector Samuel Tay is a simple man, a bit shy, and with a knack for looking at things in a simple way. He is also a thinking man - sometimes thoughts about life in general or life in the city, smog and sunsets, dry cleaning and packing, and his cigarette habit. Sometimes humorous, sometimes heartfelt, sometimes self-deprecating - all the while following his own pathways and intuitions towards solving some rather serious crimes in high places. I grew very fond of Tay as the book progressed - and I suspect that this author must like him too.

During a snowstorm blanketing the city, Najya escapes from these dangerous mages and takes refuge in the home of Dabir ibn Khalil the scholar also there is Dabir's friend the swordsman Captain Asim el Abbas.
The Cat Sitter's Pajamas: A Dixie Hemingway Mystery
The author Blaize Clement died in July of 2011. I read the article in the Sarasota paper. She , with her sons help, completed 2 more books in the Dixie Hemingway series prior to her death from cancer. They will be published. It also said that her son, John, has signed with St. Martin's Minotaur to do at least two more books in the series.

The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden Overall, I really liked this booked. I'd have to say it's probably one of the best New Adult books I've read this year. The story follows Callie and Kayden who actually went to the same high school. They were not friends in high school but end up at the same college. Both have some serious issues (which I will not expand upon as to not ruin it) but end up finding comfort and happiness in the other. For having some messed up things happen to them, it's so refreshing seeing their relationship unfold. You can't help but feel happy for them.
The Emperor's Conspiracy Both heroine and hero are jaded by childhood traumas. They are practical in dancing around polite society. They are loyal to family. And they are stubborn as mules. Charlotte and Edward puncture the facades erected by the other to find the hope of happiness that has eluded them. The possibility of romance is a subplot that enhances the larger mystery of who is orchestrating the smuggling operation. THE EMPEROR'S CONSPIRACY captured my attention from the prologue and kept it throughout the unexpected twists of human depravity. Despite the darker tone, I enjoyed THE EMPEROR'S CONSPIRACY as a break from my lighthearted historical romances.

Lankhmar Book 5: The Swords of Lankhmar The Swords of Lankhmar is the fifth book in Fritz Leiber's collection of tales revolving around the barbarian Fafhrd and the diminutive rogue the Gray Mouser. Clearly two of Mr. Leiber's most famous creations, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser belong to the genre of swords and sorcery the setting is a fantasy where men of swift blades and loose morals do battle against impossible foes for their own personal aggrandizement. This is not the realm of Tolkien. Not only is Leiber's world of Nehwon lacking in the usual elves and hobbits of Middle Earth and its many imitators, but also missing is the clear delineation between good and evil. The primary conflict is between the sadistic and decadent rulers of Lankhmar, the most famous city of Nehwon, and an army of miniature invaders. Neither side enjoys anything like moral superiority over the other. The reader certainly isn't encouraged to root much for one side over the other. While our sympathies might naturally lean towards the status quo which clearly benefits humanity, the picture painted of a city ruled by the invaders is too intriguing to simply dismiss.
The Worst Thing Elkins makes the interesting and mildly unusual choice to have most of the book narrated in the first person. This works out well on a couple of levels. The protagonist, Brian Bennett, is shown to be a likeable and grounded sort of guy. We see those inner demons from *his* point of view, which makes them understandable. It's a way of showing that Brian's troubles differ from yours or mine if they do only in degree, not in kind. So when Brian gets put through the wringer, you'll find yourself with that uneasy feeling: what if this happened to me?

Brian Jacques - Redwall Series [All 21 Books][EPUB+MOBI] Size: 83.1 MB | Type: Books - Mags Brian Jacques (pronounced 'jakes') was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Along with forty percent of the population of Liverpool, his ancestral roots are in Ireland, County Cork to be exact. Brian grew up in the area around the Liverpool docks, where he attended St. John's School, an inner city school featuring a playground on its roof. At the age of ten, his very first day at St. John's foreshadowed his future career as an author; given an assignment to write a story about animals, he wrote a short story about a bird who cleaned a crocodile's teeth. Brian's teacher could not, and would not believe that a ten year old could write so well. When young Brian refused to falsely say that he had copied the story, he was caned as "a liar". He had always loved to write, but it was only then that he realized he had a talent for it. THE START OF RED WALL Brian wrote Redwall for the children at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool, where as a truck driver, he delivered milk. Because of the nature of his first audience, he made his style of writing as descriptive as possible, painting pictures with words so that the schoolchildren could see them in their imaginations. He remained a patron of the school until his death. Jacques' writing gained acclaim when his childhood English teacher, Alan Durband, read Redwall, and showed it to a publisher without telling Brian. This event led to a contract for the first five books in the Redwall series, and a dedication to Alan in the front of several Redwall books.
