Daniel X: Armageddon This book held my interest and Patterson has developed this character completely. It's full of action and keeps you turning the pages.
All I Did Was Shoot My Man (Leonid Mcgill Mysteries) Only one person, Zella Grisham, was convicted of the robbery, because she had 50 thousand dollars in her storage unit. Zella does admit that she shot her man when she found him in bed with her best friend, but claims to be innocent of the robbery. Detectives have been unable to find the rest of the gang, and Leonid Mcgill believes that the one convicted is innocent. Leonid takes on Zella as a client. He knows she is innocent but cannot reveal how he knows. Zella takes his help reluctantly, but does not really trust him. The police believe that Leonid may have been involved in the robbery, since before the robbery he had been heavily involved in crime himself.
A Naked Singularity What's behind the nature of selfishness? "A Naked Singularity" is a novel about boxer Wilfred Benitez. Using Benitez as the stage, author Sergio De La Pava writes a story that gives readers something to think about. Speaking on the nature of evil, human nature, psychology, Hispanic life, and much more, Pava picks at the readers mind as the story rolls on and hopes to leave them wiser having read it. "A Naked Singularity" is a fine and highly recommended read.
Colonization 'Colonization' is the first book in a new young adult science fiction/dystopian series that follows the life of the teenage main character - Andromeda - and her adventure of starting a new life and a new colony on an unknown planet. The background story throughout the novel is very detailed and unique, which I thought added a lot of originality and made the book really interesting. The characters are all likable and easy to identify with, especially Andromeda and Sirius. I found myself rooting for them early on in the book and was anxious to see how their story would play out. The book is well written and fast paced, which made it an exciting and fast read. I thought that the romance was well done - not too mushy or corny - and with just the right amount of sizzle. There was plenty of action, adventure, suspense, and mystery woven into the storyline, which gave the book tons of layers and made it much more interesting. This is a well done first novel in a promising new dystopian series that readers are sure to love.
Deadly Holiday (A Deadly Trilogy Christmas Novella) Will a five-year old boy be found before officials are forced to call off the search for him because of an impending blizzard? Will Anne and Michael be able to save their marriage after a life-threatening problem threatens to change their lives forever? Will Jennifer deliver a healthy baby this time? Can Tim and Megan come to terms over a vision Megan has for their lovely Victorian home? How will Frankie and Lane work through the financial worries that is driving them to bankruptcy. And this doesn't even begin to cover some of the surprise twists of life and death Ms. Grace has effortlessly woven into this novella.

Dirty Eden Before long we find ourselves accompanying Norman on an underworld journey which echoes those of Odysseus, Dante, and Chris Nielsen, but which adds its own unique spin on not just the journey, but the mythologies that overlap and combine to approximate the truth of our reality. It's a journey that's as fascinating as it it fearsome, through a landscape as gorgeous as it is grotesque. I think it was the moment that the naked, seductive fairy emerged from the forest, volunteering to have her wings ripped off as the price of Norman's passage across the Field of Yesterday, that I realized there was no escaping this book until I saw how it all would end.
Endgame By day, she is a normal denizen of the oppressive Regency, but by night, she is wracked by terrible nightmares that hint at a past she can no longer remember. She suspects she might have killed someone—and she's afraid that she might do it again. At the same time, the games she's playing are growing steadily more violent. Someone is hacking into the system and creating bootlegged games. Dangerous games. Deadly games. Games that tell a story of profound corruption and massive-scale government conspiracies, warping the lines between fact and fiction.
Last Words Okay, so I AM biased. BUT! I even learned things about my dad that I didn't know. So imagine, if you are a fan, how fun it will be for you. My dad kept his inner life pretty close to his chest, and in this book he shows his hand fully.
Moon of the Terrible I have to say, I really enjoy SM Reine's writing. Her decision to write a fan inspired serial this fall has been a favourite. It is great to see how ideas that were brought to the table have been fleshed out and become "real". I don't like to give spoilers, but if you are a fan of the Rylie, Abel and Seth this installation of the story brings some new thoughts into the picture and shows just how complicated life can get when you are a werewolf Alpha in the midst of a family feud of epic proportions! Well worth the price to see what happens to the trio and all of their friends, new and old.
Phoenix Legacy "Phoenix Legacy" by Corrina Lawson is part of the `Phoenix Institute' series. This fantastic sequel continues the adventures of several of the extraordinary characters introduced in "Phoenix Rising". Philip Drake was altered by his foster daughter's talent which boosted his self-healing abilities but he has a disconcerting need for pain to provide
sufficient stimulation. Disenchanted with his life in black ops, he has been aimless until he realizes that his new project has far more personal relevance than he ever dreamed. The question is whether his past life will prevent him from ever moving forward and having a satisfactory future.

Power As expected I was blown away. You know when read a book series, and your waiting for the next one you build all this hype in your mind and you don't feel the book will ever live up your dream of what it should be. While this blew my dream out of water!! I got this book the day it came out but do to back school I never got a chance to read it, I started Friday morning and was done by Sunday, another one I could not put down. On the edge of my seat most of the time going crazy yelling and crying at the same time. I don't want to give too much away as I could over and over all the things that made this book great. I love book that makes you feel as if your there right next to action. Also I just loved all the twist and turns this book took... at one point I had to tell myself to breath it's just a book. So by this book by all the soul savers and sit back and get ready for ride you will love!!!!
Red Lory Red Lory tells the stories of Dr. Douglas Howard and his secretary, "Dare" Derringer. Douglas practices medicine in Hill, a small Southern town of the late 1940s or early 50s, and business is bad. An entire week may see only one or two appointments with rarely anything more severe than a patient who refuses to accept that she has diabetes or the chronic knee pain of an obese woman and the manager of the local bank is leaning on Douglas to repay his sizable loans. Douglas's only consistent patient is Mr. King, a comatose man with whose wife Douglas has been carrying on an affair. Gradually, Douglas and his paramour realize that the dying man, who owns the most successful business in town, is the means by which both can get a lot of what they want.
The Edge of Never Andrew is the perfect hero! I have never said this before, and probably never will again, but yeah, he really was perfect. He is a genuinely nice guy with just the right amount of cockiness, but there are just so many more layers than that to his character. You seriously can't help but fall in love with him and everything about him!
The Fighter Are you interested in an amazing, shocking and interesting book? If you are... then this is the book for you! This book is about the cruel and unjust things the Nazis would do to the Jews. This book is mainly about a Jew called Moshe Wisniak. Moshe lived in a poor neighborhood in Warsaw with his family. In Warsaw, a lot of polish kids would beat up Moshe because he was Jewish. Moshe couldn't use his legs because they were very weak so he had to learn how to use his fists, head, elbows and other weapons to defend himself.
The Gatekeeper
Elven detective Saxon Kirby is under pressure to find out who left a gnawed body at a Las Vegas tourist attraction. He already knows what is responsible: a werewolf. The Keeper of the Vegas werewolves is supposed to control his charges, just as Keepers have kept vampires, shifters and other paranormal races in check for over a century. But the local Keeper is weak and there is nothing to stop the murderous wolf except Saxon.

The Remaining: Refugees Let me say I feel guilty for reading this for free thanks to prime since Molles needs paid because he is that wonderful of a story teller. If you are here more than likely you have read his first two fantastic books. This one is better than the first two. Nonstop action from the beginning operation in the outlying town to the strangers showing up at the fence line at Camp Ryder. Knock my review if you please because there are not many details in it but I will not ruin the story. Just be prepared to get nothing done the rest of the day after you start reading it because you will not put it down until you finish. Thanks D. J. for another great TEOTWAWKI story.
The Secret History of Moscow This was an enjoyable and interesting book. It has a very intriguing premise. The writing style is nicely relaxed. It has the feel of a somewhat dark and disturbing fairytale. I don't really know that much about Moscow and I found the background and the mythical creatures and characters to be very interesting. I rarely say this about a book these days but I wish it had been slightly longer as I felt that at times it became a bit rushed especially towards the end.
This Machine Kills In the all-too-near future, Britain has been turned into a number of gated cities run by the all-powerful ClearSkies Corporation. Whilst those inside the cities lead a gifted existence where a responsible civilian’s most important duty is to spend, the people left in the crumbling Old-Towns desperately cling to life. It is in one of these dilapidated areas that Taylor, a security officer with a troubled past, patrols the streets with his trigger-happy team. Their task is to make sure the hungry people that mass on its edges do not infiltrate Hope City. Taylor’s job is soon to be made significantly easier by the fifty-foot-high concrete wall being built around the city’s perimeter.
Tied With a Bow Really this story furthers the plot and sets up future stories. Lawe and Diana are briefly mentioned as already mated...I think it might set up Stygian's story as well (for some reason I think he might have Honor Roberts as his mate-but as always I could be wrong). The story itself is good...but very short (hence the antho). It kind of reminded me of Creed's story in Primal. I think that it is definitely worth the read because Lora Leigh does use it to set up/continue plots.
Walking to the Moon
A young woman wakes up in her bedroom in hospital. She has emerged from a prolonged coma. Rather than going back to her husband and child, she leaves the home and begins walking into the wilderness. Walking to the Moon details her journey from darkness to light, from the profound psychological trauma that caused her to withdraw from the world, and the mountains of the mind she must conquer in order to rejoin it.Walking to the Moon is not a bleak or dark journey. It is beautifully written, observant, witty and often profoundly moving.

No Country for Old Men Cormac McCarthy's first novel since completing the Border Trilogy in 1998 is a dramatic change of pace. Gone is the focus on the wild Texas plains and the encroachment of civilization. Gone are the lyrical descriptions of untamed nature and young love. Gone is the belief that love and hope have a fighting chance in life's mythic struggles. Instead, we have a much darker, more pessimistic vision, set in Texas in the 1980s, a microcosm in which drugs and violence have so changed "civilization" that the local sheriff believes "we're looking at something we really aint even seen before."
Of Human Bondage Philip finds love in most unexpected quarters and is surprised by how help crops up from strangers. His every experience makes him as richer as the reader becomes in reading about it. The thoughts about the meaning of life, or about love or religion or about virtue or vice, and about each aspect of life that Philip encounters are spelt out with a subtlety and mastery. These thoughts find easy resonance with the reader, and make Of Human Bondage an unforgettable affair. The honesty of this piece is stunning. This novel, written without any flourishes and intricate wordplay or mystery, is I think a celebration of the deep insight and understanding of the author.
Dirty Hart has done an incredible job of crafting an erotic story with an actual storyline, rather than lots of "wham, bam, thank you man" sex. There is plenty of sex, including a threesome, and most of it graphically realistic (no flowery euphemisms here). A recommended read for those looking for something sensual yet deeper.
Priceless This fluffy and fun slice of Chick lit tells the riches to rags story of Charlotte Williams, a spoiled socialite who falls from grace after her wealthy father pleads guilty to Wall Street fraud charges. The Park Avenue girl used to be handed everything on a silver platter loses it all and must learn to grow up and make her own way in the world after escaping to the New Orleans home of her former nanny.
Priestess of the White (Age of the Five Trilogy, Book 1) I really enjoyed the authors original series even if it was written for a younger audience. This book definately takes it up a notch.I do find myself preferring the extra characters to the main one at times, such at the immortal "Hag" and the dreamweaver.Overall good read.

Ruby Red With costumes right out of Thackeray's Vanity fair, Ruby Red is full of authentically researched history, humor, mystery, magic, and it seems, romance too. As an enthusiast of Time Travel fiction I believe this author has invented a rather clever new concept that mixes an old much used idea with what modern day teenagers enjoy in fantasy reading today. A bit of Science Fiction, a dash of paranormal fantasy, add in some action adventure, sprinkle in some macabre and suspense, top it all off with a dollop of promising romance, and you have ....a hit! Ruby Red is fun, written well, has good characters of both good and bad, and is likely to top the Teen bestseller list soon. There are some interesting surprises along the way, and an ending to keep us wondering what will happen.
Salvation City Generally, I found the book to be thought provoking in some of the situations it presented. Are we, and the country, ready for a massive flu pandemic and what would happen if you were to die suddenly? How would you or your children react to being placed in a completely new situation that you are totally unfamiliar with? There are more questions raised, however I would be giving away the plot if I discussed them. I found the writing, at first, to seem simplistic. The description of the flu pandemic read, to me, like the script from a bad sci-fi movie, yet as the book progressed I was drawn into the story and found it to be gripping and thought provoking. I ended up enjoying the book greatly, and only wished the author hadn't been quite so wild with the description of the pandemic.
Scaredy Cat The plot twists around a pair of serial killers, intertwining the lives of DI Thorne and his crew of investigators. The final unveiling of the killer was quite a surprise, as I had guessed a different character to be the villain. The second half of the book really picks up speed and is hard to put down. You don't want to stop until the killer's identity is uncovered and hopefully he is caught. Intriguing characters, fast moving plot I highly recommend it.
Sleepyhead The story is very dark. Not only is the subject matter intense (a killer wanting to turn his victims into vegetables, not corpses), but Thorne is a damaged individual with a lot of personal and emotional baggage. The author is English, so there are a number of slang phrases that American readers will have to think about in order to follow the conversation. And even though you think you know who the killer is, you just know there's going to be a twist somewhere.
South of Broad Pat Conroy is one of the best authors of our times. I couldn't put this book down. His discriptions of people and their personal feeling draw me into the story. He is a master of the craft of writing. Having written two books myself I appreciate all he brings into a story.

Starfish James Crowley's words jump off the page to provide a vivid landscape that is so detailed it comes right to life in the mind's eye. The story shows the importance of things such as family, friendship, nature, and remembering where you come from. I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in reading a beautiful coming of age tale about a brother and sister that go on an exciting journey that helps them get in touch with who they are.
The Alloy of Law: A Mistborn Novel The Alloy of Law is a stand alone urban fantasy that occurs in the lands of the Mistborn Trilogy, but in the future three centuries after the heroes of the previous tales are alive only as legends. The brilliant story line can be read without the perusing the trilogy though those who do so will miss out on a fabulous magical fantasy series. The key to this strong action adventure is the emerging competition between magic and technology except when a rare practitioner combines them. Wax and his two compatriots add amusing banter to a brisk High Noon in Mistborn guns and sorcery thriller.
The Cosmic Puppets The Cosmic Puppets leaves you with as many questions as it does answers, but was a very satisfying read. The situation Dick creates is engrossing and fascinating, and the pacing is lightning quick. Probably among the most accessible PKDick books I've read to date, perfect for a casual fan or someone new to this man's startling body of work, The Cosmic Puppets comes highly recommended.
The Eye of the Leopard The chapters alternate between past and present, Sweden and Africa, in an attempt to give the reader an understanding of Hans Olofson's development through boyhood and his more mature years, as he attempts to understand what is happening around him and even attempt to do something about the inequities of the indigenous population. The novel is not for everyone. It is deep in its way of studying Hans as a person, and its depth is far more penetrating in its analysis of the African mind. It is a far cry from the more intriguing Wallander mysteries, but well worth the effort if you so choose to read it. While recommended, bear in mind that it may not be for everyone.
The Final Hour
I'm actually starting to think Andrew Klavan is incapable of writing a boring scene. Practically every sentence is packed to bursting with suspense. From a dogfight through the streets of New York to dodging subway trains in a shootout with the Homelanders, Klavan never lets up on the thrills. And now, it's finally over. The final hour has come and gone, answering every question revealing every mystery. Every fan of the previous books will need to get their hands on this truly satisfying conclusion to the insanely epic series.

The Giver Although it is a Newbery Award Winner, The Giver is a controversial book that has been challenged and even banned. After parents complained that the violent and sexual passages were inappropriate for children, the Bonita Unified School District in California temporarily banned the novel from classes. The Giver has been challenged in other school districts around the country for its "mature themes" of euthanasia, infanticide, and suicide. I do not agree with banning and challenging of this novel. It is a great book, and part of what makes it so great is the incorporation of these controversial issues. They force readers to wrestle with their own thoughts and figure out their stance on the issues. Good literature makes readers think. Banning this book takes away the freedom of speech, the freedom to read, and the freedom to learn and explore. The banning of The Giver is ironically similar to the actions of the Community that lead the Community to its suppressive and stifling state. A powerful story, The Giver keeps readers in suspense, touches them, and stays with them for a long time. I love this book, and I encourage everyone to read it.
The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe The eternal question about Marilyn's death (suicide or murder) is not clearly resolved, although the author indicates that he believes it was by a likely unintentional overdose of drugs. That said, the timelines which have been offered
over the bios of the last 25 years do not really mesh with this conclusion, especially regarding the time of death and the chaos at MM's house in the hours after her death was known.
The Templars Quest The Montsegur Medallion points the way to the most coveted relic, the Holy Grail. In the wrong hands it could destroy civilisation.Finn McGuire finds himself framed for a string of murders moments after he uncovers the legendary Medallion in an ancient Syrian chapel. The culprits are a group of Nazi SS descendents known as The Seven who will stop at nothing to possess the pendant . . . and the Holy Grail. Their wish? To resurrect the Third Reich.Former MI5 operative Caedmon Aisquith is an expert in the Knights Templar and the Grail he knows the Seven can only desire it for evil and when Finn approaches him, the two join forces in a quest to find the deadly relic and halt the bloodshed. Their race takes them from the Louvre to a medieval citadel in the Pyrenees. But the stakes are high for the fate of mankind hangs in the balance if they fail.
The Wandering Falcon The Wandering Falcon is an intimate, poetic and poignant novel of that very time and space, charting the cultural and social landscape of the wild and formidable world known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Jamil Ahmad paints the fierce but beautiful landscape of a tribal people and their lives of hardship and survival, lived and endured in a cruel and unforgiving land of extremes, a land as beautiful as it is desolate.
Act of Deceit: A Harlan Donnally Novel Steven Gore has woven quite an interesting tale in Act of Deceit. The premise of the novel involves a retired police detective attempting to fulfill the dying wishes of a friend and neighbor by locating his sister and sharing a truth his friend could never tell. What evolves is a gripping tale of deceit set in northern California and stretching down to Cancun, Mexico. The story is fast paced and involves many aspects of society, from the homeless and mentally ill to the ultra rich. The story also draws heavily on the inept system that provides the majority of mental health services in our country - the prison system - and the legal trappings that surround the process of delivering justice to the mentally incompetent. Even more depth is added by injecting a healthy dose of the power and secrecy of the Catholic Church, the corruption of some Mexican police and the Teflon coated world of the rich and well connected. Gore's passion and depth of knowledge on the subjects woven into the novel are evident throughout the story and the result is a page turning detective yarn with enough real substance to keep it very interesting.

Deeper This is not as good as The Descent. I won't spoil it, but the scientific basis proposed in the first book is abandonned in the second. There is a Satan and he IS 'Older Than Old' and he's just kidnapped a whole mess of children from the surface. The novel is about finding them, bringing them back up atop.
Drill & Sanctimony A captivating book that will make you chuckle while describing the daily grind of basic training. Anyone that has been through basic will be able to reminisce about the characters they met and the shenanigans they pulled. For those that have not been in the military, this might be as close as you want to get, so enjoy!
Getting Old Can Kill You: A Mystery This was one of the better installments in this series. The characters really came to life & the story line was comical as well! I'm not going to give up the plot of this book, but I will say the ending really surprised me! Very well written, funny & engaging! This book has it all & is a must read for cozy mystery lovers!!!!
From the Dead
Billingham never disappoints. There are always numerous plot twists and never a boring page. I just wish he were more prolific as I become impatient waiting for the next novel to come out. I understand that 2 of his books have been made into series for British television. Sure wish we could get them over here. Sleepyhead is one of them. The relationship between Thorne and best friend Phil Hendrix is priceless. If you like British mysteries/police procedurals, don't miss Billingham's books.
In the Dark The graphic descriptions of drug culture and the kids involved in the operations are matched only by the intricacy of the plotting. There is more than one twist when the story takes another turn. The novel is as well-written as anything the author has done, and highly recommended.

Lazybones It's not that all British writers write well it's just that so many of them do. The how's and why's of that are up for discussion. I've often found that UK thriller/procedural writers in particular leave waaaaaaaay too many blank spots, e.g. the actual lives of the characters they parade across the pages. Mark Billingham does not do this. He's created a believable and interesting character in Mr. Thorne. Yes, there are gaps. But that's for the reader to fill in. Reading needn't always be an entirely passive activity. This book is a solid, interesting read. Plenty of "ah ha" moments, pathways (both productive and of the dead-end variety) to explore. Basically, Billingham is a subtle writer---but not so much as to be beyond the reader's understanding. Excellent detective fiction with plenty of interesting character sketches.
Lifeless Author Bllingham takes us with Tom Thorne into the world of the London homeless and introduces us to some very likeable people while unravelling a quite worthy mystery. Tom Thorne is working undercover appearing to be one of the homeless while searching for a serial killer who is selectively killing members of that society. It's best to start the series from the beginning, but this could stand as a stand=alone mystery. It's` better, though, to be familiar with the older books which are referred to in this novel.
Nightshine: A Novel of the Kyndred This was an interesting story because it delves into Charlie's past. Charlie is gutsy and likeable. I loved the glimpses that the author reveals about her past, how it defined her and her motivations to help others and not be a victim. The hero, Samuel is strong and self- sacrificing. He is the sort of tragic figure that is very intriguing to read about. He realizes he is going to die, and yet he risks his life to save a woman that he does not know because he was told that she would be in danger. He is very noble and it made me happy that he was able to find someone who complemented him and finally loved him in turn. I also enjoyed how many of the characters all secretly knew each other through their aliases, and they were finally able to meet in person. Besides the characters, the mystery behind who the master of the island was suspenseful. My favorite character was actually Samuel's friend Drew who also has special powers and tries to save Samuel with mixed results.

Blackout (Audiobook) English | 2010 | ISBN: 1441875182 | MP3 | 772 MB Oxford in 2060 is a chaotic place. Scores of time-traveling historians are being sent into the past, to destinations including the American Civil War and the attack on the World Trade Center. Michael Davies is prepping to go to Pearl Harbor. Merope Ward is coping with a bunch of bratty 1940 evacuees and trying to talk her thesis adviser, Mr. Dunworthy, into letting her go to VE-Day. Polly Churchill’s next assignment will be as a shopgirl in the middle of London’s Blitz. And seventeen-year-old Colin Templer, who has a major crush on Polly, is determined to go to the Crusades so that he can “catch up” to her in age. But now the time-travel lab is suddenly canceling assignments for no
apparent reason and switching around everyone’s schedules. And when Michael, Merope, and Polly finally get to World War II, things just get worse. For there they face air raids, blackouts, unexploded bombs, dive-bombing Stukas, rationing, shrapnel, V-1s, and two of the most incorrigible children in all of history — to say nothing of a growing feeling that not only their assignments but the war and history itself are spiraling out of control. Because suddenly the once-reliable mechanisms of time travel are showing significant glitches, and our heroes are beginning to question their most firmly held belief: that no historian can possibly change the past. From the people sheltering in the tube stations of London to the retired sailors who set off across the Channel to rescue the stranded British Army from Dunkirk, from shopgirls to ambulance drivers, from spies to hospital nurses to Shakespearean actors, Blackout reveals a side of World War II seldom seen before: a dangerous, desperate world in which there are no civilians and in which everybody — from the Queen down to the lowliest barmaid — is determined to do their bit to help a beleaguered nation survive.

Voices (Annals of the Western Shore) (Audiobook) English | 2006 | ISBN: 0152062424 | ASIN: B002I512CA | 9 hours and 45 minutes | MP3 | 202 MB Ansul was once a peaceful town filled with libraries, schools, and temples. But that was long ago, and the conquerors of this coastal city consider reading and writing to be acts punishable by death. And they believe the Oracle House, where the last few undestroyed books are hidden, is seething with demons. But to seventeen-year-old Memer, the house is the only place where she feels truly safe. Then an Uplands poet named Orrec and his wife, Gry, arrive, and everything in Memer's life begins to change. Will she and the people of Ansul at last be brave enough to rebel against their oppressors?
Powers (Annals of the Western Shore) (Audiobook) English | 2008 | ASIN: B001706RTK | MP3 | 376 MB Young Gavie sometimes "remembers" the future. But as a slave living among those who feel threatened by the powers of the Marsh people, Gavie must hide his abilities. And then tragic events force the grief-stricken Gavie to flee the only world he's ever known. In his perilous quest for freedom, Gavie must learn to harness his unique gifts, or he may never find a place he can call home. Ursula K. Le Guin's haunting epic of survival, selfdiscovery, and hope is third in a sequence that begins with her PEN Award-winning Gifts.
Gifts (Annals of the Western Shore) (Audiobook) English | 2004 | ISBN: 1419332023 | MP3 | 167 MB Scattered among poor, desolate farms, the clans of the Uplands possess gifts. Wondrous gifts: the ability--with a glance, a gesture, a word--to summon animals, bring forth fire, move the land. Fearsome gifts: They can twist a limb, chain a mind, inflict a wasting illness. The Uplanders live in constant fear that one family might unleash its gift against another. Two young people, friends since childhood, decide not to use their gifts. One, a girl, refuses to bring animals to their death in the hunt. The other, a boy, wears a blindfold lest his eyes and his anger kill. In this beautifully crafted story, Ursula K. Le Guin writes of the proud cruelty of power, of how hard it is to grow up, and of how much harder still it is to find, in the world's darkness, gifts of light.
Americans at War (Audiobook) English | 2008 | ISBN: 0736645551 , 1439502331 | MP3 | 252 MB In the turbulent history of America each era has been delineated by a war. Although World War II has been the backdrop for most of his writing, perhaps no other historian has focused on modern America at war so strikingly as Stephen E. Ambrose. In this fascinating collection of fifteen essays Ambrose ranges over the many wars that have enveloped Americans and depicts the personalities of American leaders during wartime: Custer, Eisenhower, Patton, Mac-Arthur, Franklin Roosevelt, and Nixon. "All nations make war in their own way," he says. "The American way is the theme of these essays." Two large subjects encompass his research: First, he is fascinated by the experiences of those who have gone to war, both the leaders and the led, and, as he shows in "Just Dumb Luck: American Entry into World War II," he is intrigued by men who make big decisions or fail to make them. Generals alone don't win wars. The infantrymen, as he points out in "SIGINT: Deception and the Liberation of Western Europe," were responsible for winning World War II, not those who were involved in intelligence operations. Soldiers who break under strain ("My Lai: Atrocities in Historical Perspective") also get his fair and compassionate examination. Although many of the pieces in this collection focus on World War II, Ambrose also explores the Civil War ("Struggle for Vicksburg: The Battles and Siege that Decided the Civil War"), the Vietnam War (an undertaking different from earlier American wars), and war in general- actual wars of the past as well as hypothetical wars ("War in the Twentyfirst Century"). He includes one of quite recent times ("The Cold War in Perspective") in which fighting was not confined to the battlefield. Because democracies employ teamwork, he believes they are by far the most efficient governments for the fighting of war. Ambrose writes that on occasion he has changed his mind about certain big questions ("The Atomic Bomb and Its Consequences"). Should atomic bombs have been dropped on Japan? Changes of opinion, he says, come during research, one of the exciting features of studying history in a free country. "We change our minds when confronted with new evidence; they [Communist regimes] change their minds when confronted with a new dictator." Ambrose has the gift of making history come alive. "If I told the story right, I could make them want to know." One reads his profiles and feels present as momentous issues are considered and decisions made. His descriptions of battles and maneuvers allow the reader to be a participant. Stephen E. Ambrose was Director Emeritus of the Eisenhower Center, Boyd Professor of History at the University of New Orleans, and president of the National D- Day Museum. He was the author of many books, most recently The Mississippi and the Making of a Nation: From the Louisana Purchase to Today. His compilation of 1,400 oral histories from American veterans and authorship of over 20 books established him as one of the foremost historians of the Second World War in Europe. He died October 13, 2002, in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
Voice of the Violin (Audiobook) English | 2008 | ISBN: 1433218380 | MP3 | 145 MB Montalbanos gruesome discovery of a lovely, naked young woman suffocated in her bed immediately sets him on a search for her killer. There are many suspects, but it is a reclusive violinist who holds the key to the murder. He arranges for the body to be found and then proceeds to investigate the crime. Montalbano regularly butts heads with police bureaucracy, and his sharp wit and sharper tongue add dimension to the convoluted case with its eccentric cast of suspects. AUDIOFILE Golden Voice Grover Gardner doesn't waste time on Italian accents, instead providing personal touches and quirky behaviors to Camilleri's many honest character portraits. Montalbano loves fine cuisine, and Gardner adds just the right spice to each mouth-watering description. Translator Stephen Sartarelli earns top marks for his impeccable work in the fourth Inspector Montalbano mystery.

Rounding the Mark (An Inspector Montalbano Mystery) (Audiobook) English | 2010 | ISBN: 1441721819 | MP3 | 170 MB
Andrea Camilleri's international bestselling mystery series features the earthy and urbane Sicilian detective Inspector Montalbano who casts his spell on more and more fans with each new mystery In Rounding the Mark, Inspector Montalbano discovers a corpse while swimming along the Sicilian shore. His pursuit of the cause of death intersects with the inquiry into a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a young boy who may have been victimized by human traffickers. The buying and selling of immigrant children, for slave labor, sex, and as a source of illegal organ transplants, is part of the evil underside of the opening of Europe's borders. That, combined with frustration with his department's repressive handling of security for the G8 summit in Genoa and the corruption among his superiors and the politicians behind them, makes setting anything right seem like an exercise in futility. Montalbano alternates between despair and steely resolve. When he realizes that he may have inadvertently aided the boy's victimizers, his internal turmoil intensifies.
Excursion to Tindari (An Inspector Montalbano Mystery) (Audiobook) English | 2009 | ISBN: 1433218305 | MP3 | 178 MB Following the long-running success he has enjoyed on bestseller lists in Europe, Inspector Salvo Montalbano is now winning over American readers and critics alike as "one of the most engaging protagonists in detective fiction" (USA Today). Now, in Excursion to Tindari, Andrea Camilleri’s savvy and darkly comic take on Sicilian life leads Montalbano into his most bone- chilling case yet. In two seemingly unrelated crimes, a young Don Juan is found murdered and an elderly couple is reported missing after an excursion to the ancient site of Tindari. As Montalbano works to solve both cases, he stumbles onto Sicily’s ghastly "new age" of brutal and anonymous criminality.
The Snack Thief (Inspector Montalbano Mysteries) (Audiobook) English | 2007 | ISBN: 1433202131 | MP3 | 170 MB When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator, and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machinegunned by a Tunisian patrol boat off Sicily's coast, only Inspector Montalbano, with his keen insight into human nature, suspects the link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished housecleaner and occasional prostitute, whose young son steals other schoolchildren's midmorning snacks. But Karima disappears, and the young snack thief's life, as well as Montalbano's, is endangered when the inspector exposes a viper's nest of government corruption and international intrigue.
Smell of the Night (Inspector Montalbano Mysteries) (Audiobook) English | 2005 | ISBN: 078617742X | MP3 | 275 MB The sixth mystery in the Inspector Montalbano series, The Smell of the Night brings the shady shenanigans of late twentieth-century international finance to small-town Sicily. A "financial wizard" entrusted with the savings of nearly half the retirees of Vigata mysteriously disappears with the money. In a rather atypical case for Montalbano, the inspector finds himself initially shut out of the investigation by the ever-hostile commissioner Bonetti-Alderighi and forced to work from the shadows.

Jobs: Can we afford them? Occupy Wall Street . . . worldwide! Everybody’s talking about the economy, but how can we, the people, understand what Wall Street or Washington knows—or say they know? Read Economix. With clear, witty writing and quirky, accessible art, this important and timely graphic novel transforms “the dismal science” of economics into a fun, fact-filled story about human nature and our attempts to make the most of what we’ve got . . . and sometimes what our neighbors have got. Economix explains it all, from the beginning of Western economic thought, to markets free and otherwise, to economic failures, successes, limitations, and future possibilities. It’s the essential, accessible guide to understanding the economy and economic practices. A must-read for every citizen and every voter.
Every Day is an Atheist Holiday! More Magical Tales from the Author of God, No! (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2012 | 7 hours and 52 mins | ISBN: 1469276887 | MP3 96 kbps | 310 MB Let’s be honest — nobody has more fun than atheists. Don’t believe it? Well, consider this: For nonbelievers, every day you’re alive is a day to celebrate! And no one celebrates life to the fullest like Penn Jillette — the larger, louder half of legendary magic duo Penn & Teller — whose spectacularly witty and sharply observant essays in Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday! will entertain zealots and skeptics alike. Whether he’s contemplating the possibility of life after death, deconstructing popular Christmas carols, or just calling bullsh*t on Donald Trump’s apprentice training, Jillette does not fail to shock and delight his fans. And as ever, underneath these rollicking rants lie a deeply personal philosophy and a generous spirit, which find joy and meaning in family, and peace in the simple beauty of the everyday. Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday! is a hysterical affirmation of life’s magic from one of the most distinctly perceptive and provocative humorists writing today.
