Against the Odds (The Raines of Wind Canyon) Alex has been waging his own battle of avoidance with Sabrina knowing she is the one woman he will not be able to walk away from. Helping Sabrina starts out simply enough with a quick trip to the land to "check things out." This trip quickly turns into a nightmare fight for their lives neither expected. Someone is not going to let Sabrina find out what the mine might have in it but the cost of her life is more than Alex will tolerate. He goes into defense mode and embraces all of his skills as a former Navy pilot and more importantly man in love with a woman.

Angel Interrupted (A Dead Detective Mystery) Since I really loved the first book in this series I was worried about how the author would follow it up. I didn't have to worry, this second book in the series is just as good, if not better, than the first. The basic premise is that a police detective who was a big drinker and an admittedly lousy police officer, husband and father is now stuck on earth after he's died. No one can see or hear him and the book is told through his point of view. As with the first book, there is much introspection on his part about the mistakes he made in his life. He spends his time following his replacement on the police force as she works on cases. We really get to hear more of his voice and personality with this book and at times he is laugh out loud funny.

A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows: An Outlander Novella Diana's writing is great as always. It only took me about an hour and a half tops to read this novella. It tells the story about what Jerry MacKenzie was doing when he slipped thru time. Also, a small connection to Claire Randall is in the story. The only part I would have liked to see some expansion on was about his trial's in the past. It never did tell what year he landed in. I know this is a novella, so detail was not as expansive as one of her lengthy novels. There are a few twists in the end, that make you go humm, and also smile.

Beautiful Creatures In the end, I highly recommend this read to anyone. I enjoyed it immensely. I didn't roll my eyes like I usually do at romance 'stuff'. It wasn't cliche or corny. I didn't want to gag at two teenager's supposedly "true" love for each other. Rather, I enjoyed the world, enjoyed the setting especially (small town in the South?), appreciated the fact that high school wasn't portrayed as it usually is in books and movies. And while there will undoubtedly be those who disagree with me, this novel has my full stamp of approval, and I can't wait until the sequel...if there is one, which I hope there will be.

Betrayal (JET #2) Twenty-eight year old Jet, the former Mossad operative from the eponymous novel JET, must battle insurmountable odds to protect those she loves in a deadly race that stretches from the heartland of Nebraska to the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., from the lurid streets of Bangkok to the deadly jungles of Laos and Myanmar. Fans of Kill Bill, the Bourne trilogy, and 24 will be delighted by this roller-coaster of action, intrigue and suspense.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk As a seventy year old woman who doesn't own a TV and lives in Maine, it's unlikely that a book about soldiers, football, and high rollers looking for a movie deal set in Texas would compel me to write my first review, but this book did. It's a piece of Americana that tells us about ourselves in the same way that say To Kill a Mockingbird or Death of a Salesman reveals pieces of the puzzle that is America. I somehow feel better for having read this book which is why, I guess, some of us read in the first place.

Choke Point Latest in a series of adventure books taking place in modern day and centered on a somewhat different type of main character with ordinary limitations. However, in this book, Simon Leonidovich (main character) exhibits more charateristics of a movie action hero than in the earlier books ... his powers of observation are enhanced, and he is able to accomplish actions that would not likely succeed in real life.

Dangerous Evolution

Placed in the far, far distant future - this book ties together nicely elements of sci-fi, mystery, thriller and a dash of romance. The main character, special investigator Ben Malik, is interesting, likeable, and most importantly too me, believable.

Dead in the Dog A fifties murders mystery set in Malaya from author of the ‘Crowner John’ books. - Arriving in Singapore, newlyqualified pathologist Tom Howden is still questioning his decision to sign on for three years in Her Majesty's Far East Land Forces. As he settles in, he discovers that his new home is a hotbed of scandal and intrigue. When an English planter is attacked one night, the finger of suspicion naturally points at local bandits, rather than a fellow Englishman. It soon becomes clear, however, that the situation is rather more complicated and deadly than it first appeared. Tom Howden’s newly-acquired forensic skills are about to be put to the ultimate test.

Deck the Halls With Love: A Lost Lords of Pembrook Novella This was a quick read and perfect for this busy time of the year. Heath makes us care for her characters with her well written prose. It was clever of Meredith to ascertain if either of the interested lords were after her only for her dowry. But perhaps she should have made sure before she loses her virginity to one. Now that Christmas is here, this novella will help you to hang onto some of that warm Christmas spirit while you take a break amidst the hectic fun.

Desolate Angel (A Dead Detective Mystery) Kevin can go anywhere, he can see and hear everything, he can sense things about people that the living overlook, but he can't communicate with Maggie Gunn, the detective on the new murder case. As he tries in his oblique way to guide Maggie in the right direction and protect her from threats to her own life as she solves both old and new murders, Kevin finds after death the purpose that was missing in his life. He becomes Maggie's shadow partner as well as her protector, determined to redeem himself by setting right all the cases he mishandled in the wasted years of his career.

Infinity Ring Book 2: Divide and Conquer This is a fast read. At 188 pages, there's not a lot to hold readers back. The "Hystorian's Guide" is a collectable map that includes a special code to unlock exclusive content on the Infinity Ring online game

Double Danger When they meet again, it's in the middle of a terrorist attack. But now J.J. is Jilian and working for Homeland Security and Simon is working for A-Tac and they end up working together on the case. Pretty much everything in this book worked for me. I loved the history between Jilian and Simon. I loved their chemistry and that time after time, they both put the other ahead of themselves. They are in a race against time over a terrorist plot that isn't making any sense. The only thing they know is that every time this guy strikes, they seem to be right there in the thick of it and on the verge of death. It was VERY suspenseful and action-packed. I loved that! There is also GREAT romantic tension between the two of them. There is a lot that's been left unsaid hanging between them and you combine that with their chemistry and the constant danger that they find themselves in and it makes for a really great read.

Dragon's Breath: Book Two in the Tales of the Frog Princess I think Emma is the perfect example of what a good female character can be, and it's a story that I think girls everywhere will love. I'm sure boys will like it too, with all the dragons and giant spiders.

From Notting Hill with Love...Actually

I honestly cared about the characters and while Scarlett's stomach was doing gymnastics mine was right along with hers each time she got closer to Sean. The main character, Scarlett, is obsessed with the movies and I have found that I must be also. As different situations happen around her that remind her of one movie scene or another I was there also saying out loud what movie it was from. It was an amazing feeling as I was living the new moment through Scarlett but of course I was also remembering the movie and how it also made me feel the first time I watched it.

Ghost Planet I loved the character of Elizabeth! She's extremely intelligent, strong willed and confident. She readily adapts to her situation, and my favorite parts were how she found an endless amount of loopholes in the Ghost Protocol to get what she needed, I couldn't help but smile at her ingenuity. She's constantly curious and asks a million questions which is a refreshing change from characters that just go along with it until something is revealed. Elizabeth actively searches for the answers and has a healthy sense of skepticism when presented with something that seems too good to be true. Fisher crafted a main character that was complex and had a history. Over the course of the story her past clashes with her present as it goes tumbling into her future, and the reader gets to see how she grows and evolves.

Hopeless

Such a realness to these characters that each paragraph controlled my breath. From the moments that had me laughing hard, to the ones that gripped the pit of my soul, and my favorites??? the ones that actually stopped my breathing while I experienced Holder and Sky's intoxicating relationship.

Leashing the Tempest This time around, the three of them pull Kar Yee, Cady's best friend and business partner, into their orbit and let her experience some of the dangerous joy that comes with hanging out with a mage, a demon, and a teenage boy who doesn't quite have a handle on his knack. Not going to lie, the Kar Yee/Jupe interactions were weirdly hilarious. I love that she can make him fall all over himself verbally with a few well placed endearments.

Oxford Blood (The Cavaliers: Book One) The world building in this book was amazing. Not to mention the conspiracy theory of vampires taking over Oxford to recruit new and bright students for their Cavaliers group. When I first read about Harriet I thought of her as a two dimensional character. But as I read the book, I started to understand her more and like her. But I was really intrigued by Adeleine - Harriet's mother - and Gus - the leader of the vampires and Adeleine's husband.

Rise of the Fallen (All the King's Men) I hardly ever give a book five stars, but this was a rare story, I just couldn't put down. This author has taken a way over populated paranormal genre and brought us something different. Her characters are strong, yet troubled. You have no problem relating the their emotions and it's nice to see something where a vampire's life is not perfect. Rise of the fallen gave me what many of the mainstream authors I have loved for years have started failing to give. Where they have left me wishing for more, and leaving me feeling like there just could have been more to the book, Micah Black's story took me to the edge and dropped me over it.

Scent of Magic (Healer) Where the world building and lush descriptions played such a major role in the first book, characterization and emotion play the central roles here. The settings are still described in Maria's brilliant way, but I got so much more from the characters this time, particularly Avry. The relationships are tangled and messy, and things are never what they seem. Lots of questions are answered, and many more arise. The plot and pacing were spot-on, and I had a very difficult time putting this book down to satisfy even my basic needs.

Shadows Before the Sun (Charlie Madigan, Book 4) For the first time in the series, Charlie shares POV space with another character: Hank. The majority of the story is still told from Charlie's perspective, but those few scenes from Hank are fantastic. He's long been the character I've been craving to know more about, and this glimpse inside has only made me want to know more. His chapters are often delusional as he is repeatedly brought to the point of death and his mind begins to shred as a result. The Hank that emerges is damaged, though not as much as I would have expected...hopefully the ramifications are just further reaching. The Charlie Madigan urban fantasy series has been a favorite since it's debut, and it's books like SHADOWS BEFORE THE SUN that ensure it stays a favorite. The mythology is utterly unique, and introducing Hank's perspective, along with a willingness to resolve long running storylines while setting up new ones are just further indications that this series has plenty more to give. Bring it on.

Larry Bond's Red Dragon Rising: Shadows of War In contrast to his work with Clancy, "Red Dragon Rising" looks to focus a bit more on the action rather than the political intrigue which is a good and bad thing. I think it's good because when the focus is on the action it moves by with a quick pace and by the time I got to the later parts of the book (the last 150 pages or so) it went by much faster than the preceding 100+ pages. The bad thing about the lack of political intrigue is that when the scenes involving the government do show up (at least in this first book) it seems almost like a small aside meant to show the reader that all of this isn't escaping notice of the government. I'm thinking that since US forces aren't really shown until the later stages of this book it's likely that that's also the reason behind why the governmental portions and development of those story lines has been allowed to run a little short.

Shadows Although it is a sequel to THE WORLD ON BLOOD, SHADOWS stands well as an independent work, thick with double-crossing, kidnapping, arson, poison, and like THE WORLD ON BLOOD sex. An awful lot of sex. Unfortunately, wiccan practice is portrayed with stress on sexual activity and anti-Christian touches that reflect medieval anti-witch propaganda more than modern wiccan practice. SHADOWS is also marred by a protracted, almost dragging denouement that goes on for some fifty pages past what FEELS like the ending. The book's true end nonetheless has a satisfying rightness. Although lacking the freshness of THE WORLD ON BLOOD, SHADOWS is a gripping read, full of engaging characters and fast-paced adventure.

Shadow of the Moon (The Nightcreature Novels) This is quite the short story, don't mistake this for a novella, it isn't! If you have been following this series from the very first book, then you may want to read this story since it revisits Will and Jessie. The first people we meet in Ms Handlelands very first book. This was quick, inexpensive, to the point, both humorous and spooky, and a delight to read while you are waiting in line at the grocery or the doctor's office.

Shadow Sight Ivy Granger isn't a character from Harry Potter, she is a specially skilled detective in a town brimming with unusual creatures. Others may see an old man collecting bottles or a rasta smoking a joint, but she sees the monsters hidden behind the glamor. More importantly, Ivy has the gift of psychometry, the ability to sense visions from touching an object. As soon as her skin touches people or objects, she may be victim to seeing horrible happenings from the past. These talents are what gives an edge to Private Eye, the private detective agency run by Ivy and her *rockabilly friend Jinx.

Shame I've been reading novels by Scandinavian authors for the last year but they have been crime dramas/murder mysteries. I was told by one of the sellers that this book is more of a psychological thriller. It is very much a character study, and excellently written.

Shieldwall I love this period of history. It's full of action, love, intrigue and more. However Hill writes like he has a bus to catch. Large chunks of easily embroidered Anglo-Saxon history are overlooked. If the stories are true, that this is the first of a trilogy, there's scope to include more characterization and less blanks. More detail and a little more emotional impact would make all the difference. On the positive, this account of the struggles of Edmund Ironside against the Danish Vikings, has helped make a confusing period of history more palatable and much more clear to me as I'm a massive history lover, however I never officially studied it at University so I do get a little confused at the hundreds of Thegns, battles, Athelings and Kings of various Kingdoms. This has helped. So on that account, thanks Mr. Hill.

Larry Bond's Red Dragon Rising: Shock of War The action revolves back to Washington where President Greene maneuvers, where MacArthur finds himself assaulted in the press by Chinese-supported members of Congress, where Duncan frets about her career. And it revolves out to sea, where destroyer Captain Dirk Silas patrols the Gulf of Tonkin to probe Chinese naval forces but with orders not to engage. The spooks plot to get some anti-tank rockets sent into Vietnam, but it's not much. We're tap-dancing around the edge of a really interesting war, but one we don't see much of through the eyes of its main combatants, China and Vietnam. It falls short of Tom Clancy's war-breaks-out plots, and also of Bond's lesserknown "Vortex" with its what-if scenario, written in the 1980s, of the South African apartheid regime invading its neighbors.

Shock Warning This is the third of the Michael Walsh books I've read. I loved the first two, and now, with the third, it's clear that he just gets better and better. Fast paced, riveting, and with a clear-eyed knowledge of the way the world of espionage works (or doesn't work) today, Walsh provides an all-too real, unsentimental view into the terrors that lurk out there. Walsh understands patriotism, the dangers of political correctness, and (to borrow from Jack Nicholson), that we really do want that man on the wall, protecting us at night.

Shock Wave (A Virgil Flowers Novel) "Shock Wave" is aptly named, as it involves a plot about a very busy bomber who has it in for "Pye-Mart", obviously a Walmart knockoff, that is in the early construction phase in Butternut Falls (MN), and expected to destroy the local merchants and pollute the river with runoff, etc., etc. While that's not exactly an original premise, the one or two bombings per day keep everyone hopping to an insane degree, with a similar increase in suspense to the reader. Not surprisingly, there appears to have been illegal payoffs to local politicos to make the approval for the new megastore a reality and while he's trying to discover the identity of the bomber, Virgil uncovers those crimes as well, nicely cleaning up the local scene. Meanwhile, Virgil seems to be telephonically breaking up with his new sheriff sweetheart, which slows down his tendency to womanize key characters, but that only added to the "off-screen" fun.

Signs of Love: Love Match The path of true love never runs smoothly, and when Gemma is involved it can get exceedingly bumpy! For as long as thirteen-year-old Gemma Stone can remember she has dreamed of becoming an award-winning journalist. Unfortunately, as the youngest member of the Green Park High student e-zine editorial team, she's given the job of writing the horoscopes, under the pen name 'Jessica Jupiter'. Not knowing the first thing about astrology, Gemma decides to make the most of her unexpected situation by using her new position to play Cupid with her friends, writing fictional forecasts to help their romantic dreams come true. But is Gemma too busy with her friends' love lives to notice signs of love closer to home?

Silently and Very Fast Simply exquisite, like everything else of Catherynne Valente's I've ever read. This blending of science fiction and myth is simply stunning and the deeply human core of it all that we are composed of those who've come before resonates with the desire deep within to be and become who we truly are. Stories, like Catherynne's telling of Elefsis's and Neva's, communicate our experience of ourselves and our world, expressing who we believe ourselves to be while shining light on who we truly are.

Single Girl Abroad Madeline Delacourte is having the time of her life in Singapore. Young, free and absolutely single. Rich-as-rich-can-be she wants for nothing, especially not an annoyingly complicated relationship…but doesn’t all work and no play make for a very dull girl? Fresh off the plane, Jianne Xang-Bennett wants a man, preferably a tall, dark stranger, to help her get out of an awkward fix! Or should Jianne be careful what she wishes for? Over Singapore Slings these two single girls are tempted to throw caution to the wind. Should someone remind them that holiday romances never last…or would that spoil all the fun?

Skin She dresses up as Anna and goes to work in that club to entice the killer out. Now the killer is after Lilith! The police try to make Lilith leave the amateur sleuthing to the professionals and save her own live. Then her mentee, Cameron is snatched. Now, will Lilith leave the sleuthing to save her own life? And who is Michael, who says he is making a documentary about women in this line of work, titled SKIN? Lilith is attracted to Michael but she fights the attraction as she is warned about him. SKIN is a thrilling read. It is full of drama, action and danger. With car chases and police stakeouts! Lilith is a strong heroine but Hannah/Anna is full of courage and determination. The author Patricia Rosemoor has packed this thriller with danger, emotional punch and some sizzling scenes as well!

Sly Mongoose One of the things I love about Buckell's work is that his books in this series have enough similarity of style, exploration, themes, etc. (not to mention the fantastic character of Pepper!) to satisfy someone who's looking for more of 'the same'. However, each one is also quite different from the previous books, so you certainly won't feel bored with the material! Each book takes place some time after the previous one, in this case several generations later. Each book explores a different part of the universe, although at the same time it takes on the consequences of previous plots. So there's a ton of new material while also a few familiar threads to hold onto. This also means that the books can stand alone, although you'll have an easier time following some things if you know what came before.

Some Nerve Unlike her colleagues at Famous the L.A. magazine Ann doesn't pick through people's garbage and would never pervert the truth. But her editor thinks she's too nice and unless she does something drastic, he's going to replace her with a killer journalist who's more willing to get down and dirty to get a story. When airplane-phobic Ann's scheduled interview with actor Malcolm Goddard falls apart after the surly, notoriously media-averse celeb insists he'll answer questions only while piloting his Cessna she finds herself abruptly unemployed . . . and headed back to her tiny Missouri hometown to heal and regroup.

The Hidden In southern Greece in 2004, a close-knit group of archaeologists searches for the buried traces of a formidable ancient power. A student running from a failed marriage and family, Ben Mercer is a latecomer to their ranks, drawn to the charisma of the group's members to the double-edged friendship of Jason, the unsettling beauty of Natsuko and Eleschen, and the menace of Max and Eberhard. But Ben is far too eager to join the excavation project, and there is more to the group's dangerous games and dynamic than he understands. And there are things that should always remain hidden.

The Ice Queen Alice Hoffman has always been a master of character development, and she continues to weave her magic in this electrifying novel. The main character, a self-punishing librarian, takes the reader on a fascinating journey of forgiveness and self-realization.

The Pulse: A Novel of Surviving the Collapse of the Grid A relevant topic nicely interleaved with accurate and reasoned information about survival and sailing in an enjoyable novel. A fun and informative read by a writer who now proves he can write fiction as well as informational books. Scott weaves in the thinking processes behind decisions the characters are making regarding their survival...all of which are

helpful to those who may have to follow these footsteps sometime in the future. This is Scott's first novel and it comes together well to provide a tale in which to see more clearly the usefulness of many of the suggestions he makes in his prior Bug Out and similar writings.

The Sacrificial Man The plot revolves around a teacher named Alice who has helped her "boyfriend" commit assisted suicide. The details of the case are very strange. There is a gruesome element to the death that even makes the hardened police man who visits the scene throw up. Alice or Robin as she likes to be known now faces a court case and it is up to her probation officer to give a recommendation around sentencing.

The Sum of Her Parts (Tipping Point Trilogy) Dr. Ingrid Seastrom was once a respected American physician. Whispr, whose body has been transformed to preternatural thinness, was once a streetwise thief. Now, in a world on the edge of catastrophe from centuries of environmental exploitation, they are allies thrust together by fate to unravel an impossible mystery even as they are stalked by a relentless killer.

The Testament of Mary This short novella is an amazingly powerful account of a mother's love and grief for her son. The fact that that son happens to be, perhaps, the Son of God is secondary. Beautifully written and with some wonderful, often poetic, imagery, Toibin shows us Mary as a woman who lives each day with guilt and pain that she couldn't stop the events that led her son to the cruel martyrdom of the cross.

The Tsunami Countdown Our hero is Kai Tanaka, the acting director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Honolulu, who knows better than anyone what is on store. But even more important to Kai than his responsibility to warn the population is his drive to keep safe his teenage daughter Lani and his wife, Rachel, a manager of a local hotel with responsibilities of her own. But quite apart from this family at the heart of the book, the novel is awash with characters, all full of life, who are fighting to stay that way.

The Turning The Turning by Francine Prose is a disturbingly creepy retelling of The Turn of The Screw by Henry James. Throughout the book we are slowly exposed to Jack's gradual descent into madness. The Turning was definitely different from your average scary story. First, the story was written entirely in prose. It was almost like reading a series

of letters and it reminded me of Jonathan Harker's letters from Bram Stroker's Dracula. Overall, I enjoyed reading The Turning. It was a unique approach for a modern retelling and I found plenty of increasingly scary images. I would recommend this story to readers who enjoy classic scary stories because although this was definitely reimagined, it did have a nostalgic horror feel to it. Another important thing to note was the blur between reality and imagination for Jack. After several pages in, you can't help but wonder how much he's imagining.

The Woman Before Me: A Thriller This is an enthralling and thought provoking story. I was drawn into it from page one and I didn't want to put it down. Ms Dugdall knows how to develop a character! I've read chapters of her next two books on Authonomy and can see that she is a writer who will be on my watch list. The probation officer, Cate Austin, is a well drawn, interesting character and I am happy to see that she will appear in Ms Dugdall's future books.

Trigger Point The year is 2018. The US government had never wanted to have foreign governments invested so heavily in private enterprise within the United States, but the last decade had seen profits from the world's leading oil producers and manufacturer-exporters flow into US financial markets at an unprecedented rate. If the United States does not change its approach, it is doomed to conflict. Once the tensions and stresses build up, anything can act as a trigger. Anything can take you to the Trigger Point.

Unbroken (Outcast Season, Book 4) Cassiel is opposed by a powerful Djinn bent on raising an army of kidnapped Warden children to bring about nothing less than the end of the world. It will take everything Cassiel has to stop the Djinn from starting a war that will wipe all of humanity from the face of the earth. She knows that this might not be a battle she can survive, but protecting those she loves is worth any cost...

Wish Upon a Star First of all, I had no idea this wasn't a full novel. When I initially picked this up off of Net Galley I thought it was one story, but upon reading I quickly discovered that wasn't the case. After about fifty pages in and things clicking along pretty quickly I realized it would be hard to draw it out for more than maybe another hundred pages. I flipped ahead to discover a second story and was actually pretty excited about it. I'm a huge fan of short stories when written well and these were actually a little longer than a short story but still very well written. It also was a great fit for a Christmas Chick Lit story making it an incredibly quick and fun read!

Obama's Last Stand 2012 | ASIN: B008QLT0ZG | EPUB | 90 pages | 2,3 MB Though battered and bruised after nearly four years in office, Barack Obama remains the most competitive player on the field in American politics today. In Obama’s Last Stand, POLITICO White House correspondent Glenn Thrush chronicles the efforts of the president and his team to secure a second term in the face of a determined opposition, unfavorable economic headwinds, and a series of missteps by his own team.

This is a revealing portrait of the president at the most precarious moment in his political life, with insights and anecdotes drawn straight from the notebook of one of the most perceptive reporters in America. The trash-talking schoolyard athlete in Obama is very much in evidence, especially when he speaks caustically about his Republican rivals, including the man he thinks is trying to steal his legacy, Mitt Romney. Yet apart from Romney and the uncertain economy, Obama’s greatest obstacle on the road to reelection may be Obama 2008. He and his team of talented advisers must try to reconcile their nostalgia for that once-in-a-lifetime campaign with the realities of an election fundamentally altered by the advent of super PACs and the evaporation of Obama’s superstar popularity. That challenge has led a campaign operation that once prided itself on flawless execution of strategy to commit several of the most dangerous unforced errors of Obama’s political career. Yet the game is far from over. If Obama is sometimes his own worst enemy, he also has the talent and drive to reclaim this race. Spurred on by the realistic prospect of losing, and growing ever more impatient with the foibles of his campaign staff, Obama the competitor is gearing up for the most critical fourth quarter of his career. This is the story of the last stand that will either cement his legacy forever—or consign him to a roster of once-promising one-term presidents.

Flight: 100 Years of Aviation 2002 | ISBN: 0751337323 | 440 pages | PDF | 45,6 MB This work presents a journey through a century of flight, capturing the spirit and excitement of aviation past and present, from the Wright brothers' first airborne attempts to the story behind the space race. Bone-jarring moments of flight with pioneers such as Orville Wright, Harriet Quimby and Roland Garros are presented, along with absorbing profiles of the key personalities and the planes they flew. Readers can follow the swift advances in aviation technology that took place with the onset of war, as supremacy in the skies became a crucial factor.

Eyewitness accounts and images bring air reconnaissance, aerial bombing and spectacular "dogfights" to life. Grant describes how these trailblazers conquered transatlantic routes and paved the way for new luxury passenger jets. The book concludes with a glimpse into the future of flight: from anti-terrorist strategies to light aircraft, pilotless planes and space vacations.

Breasts A Natural and Unnatural History (Audiobook) English | 2012 | ISBN: 1452657602 | 9 hours and 43 minutes | MP3 | 403 MB Did you know that breast milk contains substances similar to cannabis? Or that it's sold on the Internet for 262 times the price of oil? Feted and fetishized, the breast is an evolutionary masterpiece. But in the modern world, the breast is changing. Breasts are getting bigger, arriving earlier, and attracting newfangled chemicals. Increasingly, the odds are stacked against us in the struggle with breast cancer, even among men. What makes breasts so mercurial - and so vulnerable? In this informative and highly entertaining account, intrepid science reporter Florence Williams sets out to uncover the latest scientific findings from the fields of anthropology, biology, and medicine. Her investigation follows the life cycle of the breast from puberty to pregnancy to menopause, taking her from a plastic surgeon's office, where she learns about the importance of cup size in Texas, to the laboratory, where she discovers the presence of environmental toxins in her own breast milk. The result is a fascinating exploration of where breasts came from, where they have ended up, and what we can do to save them.

Yellow Dirt - An American Story of a Poisoned Land and a People Betrayed (Audiobook) English | 2010 | ISBN: 1400169062 | ASIN: B0043UPO86 | 10 hours and 8 minutes | MP3 | 556 MB From the 1930s to the 1960s, the United States knowingly used and discarded an entire tribe of people. The Navajo worked unprotected in the uranium mines that fueled the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. Long after these mines were abandoned, Navajos in all four corners of the Reservation (which borders Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona) continued grazing their animals on sagebrush flats riddled with uranium that had been blasted from the ground. They drank contaminated water from old pits, which had filled with rain. They built their houses out of chunks of yellowcake,

they inhaled radioactive dust borne aloft from the waste piles the mining companies had left behind, and their children played in the unsealed mines themselves. Ten years after the mines closed, the cancer rate on the reservation shot up and the babies began to be born with crooked fingers that fused together into claws as they grew. Scientists filed complaints about the situation with the government but were told it was a mess "too expensive" to clean up. Few had heard this story until Judy Pasternak exposed it in a prizewinning Los Angeles Times series. Her work not only inspired this book, which is already a winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Work-In-Progress Award, it also galvanized both a congressman and a famous prosecutor to clean the sites and get reparations for the tribe. Yellow Dirt powerfully chronicles both the scandal of neglect and the Navajo's fight for justice.

That was the first sign that something was terribly wrong. Fourteen-year-old Cynthia Bigge woke that morning to find herself alone. Her family - mother, father, and brother - had vanished without a word, without a note, without a trace. Twenty-five years later, Cynthia is still looking for answers. Now she is about to learn the devastating truth. Cynthia and Terry Archer still live in Milford, Connecticut, not far from the old Bigge house on Hickory Street. With a solid marriage and a young daughter, the Archers seem on track for a successful future. But the questions raised by Cynthia's past still haunt her, and her obsession with finding the answers threatens to destroy everything they've worked for. For Cynthia, there can be no closure until she finds out why her family disappeared - and how they could have left her behind. Terry thinks the segment on the popular TV crime-stopper program Deadline is a mistake. But his wife hopes that someone watching will have a lead to her missing family. Sure enough, it's Cynthia who spots the strange car cruising the neighborhood, hears the untraceable phone calls, and discovers the ominous "gifts." And as Cynthia's nerves begin to unravel, no one's innocence is guaranteed, not even her own. By the time the first body is found, it's clear that her past is more of a mystery than she ever imagined - or may ever survive. Sex, Lies, and Headlocks: The Real Story of Vince McMahon and World Wrestling Entertainment 2004 | ISBN-10: 1400051436, 0609606905 | EPUB | 266 pages | 2 MB “Current fans and recovering Hulkamaniacs alike should find [Sex, Lies, and Headlocks] as gripping as the Camel Clutch.” —Maxim Sex, Lies, and Headlocks is the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at the backstabbing, scandals, and high-stakes gambles that have made wrestling an enduring television phenomenon. The man behind it all is Vince McMahon, a ruthless and entertaining visionary whose professional antics make some of the flamboyant characters in the ring look tame by comparison. Throughout the book, the authors trace McMahon’s rise to power and examine the appeal of the industry’s biggest stars—including Ed “Strangler” Lewis, Gorgeous George, Bruno Sammartino, Ric Flair, and, most recently, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. In doing so, they show us that while WWE stock is traded to the public on Wall Street, wrestling remains a shadowy world guided by a century-old code that stresses secrecy and loyalty. With a new afterword, this is the definitive book about the history of pro wrestling. “Reading this excellent behind-the-scenes look at wrestling promoter McMahon . . . is almost as entertaining and shocking as watching the most extreme antics of McMahon’s comic-book style creations such as Steve Austin and The Rock.” —Publishers Weekly “A quintessentially American success story of a cocky opportunist defying the odds and hitting it big . . . Sparkling cultural history from an author wise enough to let the facts and personalities speak for themselves.”—Kirkus Reviews

The Age of Empathy: Nature's Lessons for a Kinder Society 2010 | ISBN: 0307407772 | 304 pages | EPUB | 2,8 MB "An important and timely message about the biological roots of human kindness." —Desmond Morris, author of The Naked Ape Are we our brothers' keepers? Do we have an instinct for compassion? Or are we, as is often assumed, only on earth to serve our own survival and interests? In this thought-provoking book, the acclaimed author of Our Inner Ape examines how empathy comes naturally to a great variety of animals, including humans. By studying social behaviors in animals, such as bonding, the herd instinct, the forming of trusting alliances, expressions of consolation, and conflict resolution, Frans de Waal demonstrates that animals–and humans–are "preprogrammed to reach out." He has found that chimpanzees care for mates that are wounded by leopards, elephants offer "reassuring rumbles" to youngsters in distress, and dolphins support sick companions near the water's surface to prevent them from drowning. From day one humans have innate sensitivities to faces, bodies, and voices; we've been designed to feel for one another. De Waal's theory runs counter to the assumption that humans are inherently selfish, which can be seen in the fields of politics, law, and finance, and whichseems to be evidenced by the current greed-driven stock market collapse. But he cites the public's outrage at the U.S. government's lack of empathy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina as a significant shift in perspective–one that helped Barack Obama become elected and ushered in what may well become an Age of Empathy. Through a better understanding of empathy's survival value in evolution, de Waal suggests, we can work together toward a more just society based on a more generous and accurate view of human nature. Written in layman's prose with a wealth of anecdotes, wry humor, and incisive intelligence, The Age of Empathy is essential reading for our embattled times.

Rock and Roll Cage Match: Music's Greatest Rivalries, Decided 2008 | ISBN-10: 0307396274 | MOBI | 276 pages | 1 MB Music defines us. To return the favor, we’ll stick up with zealous passion for the performers and bands that we love . . . and heap aspersions and ridicule upon people who dare to place their allegiances above our own. In Rock and Roll Cage Match, today’s leading cultural critics, humorists, music journalists, and musicians themselves take sides in thirty of the all-time juiciest “who’s better” musical disputes. Marc Spitz on the Smiths vs. the Cure: “If the Smiths are its James Dean, the Cure are the Marlon Brando of modern rock.” Gideon Yago on Nirvana vs. Metallica: “Here is why Nirvana will always be a better band than Metallica. It’s not because they hit harder (they do). It’s not because they are tighter (they’re definitely not). . . . It’s because Metallica is fundamentally about respecting rules—of metal, of production, of technicality—and Nirvana is about breaking those rules down in the pursuit of innovation. Metallica was metal. Nirvana was something else.” Touré on Michael Jackson vs. Prince: “[Prince] was the wild son of Jimi, the younger brother of Rick James and Richard Pryor, the ultrasexual black Casanova who told you up front that he had a dirty mind . . . Michael held the opposite appeal. His music was often about escaping through dance or being hopeful about the world, and he came across as super-innocent.” Russ Meneve on Bruce Springsteen vs. Bon Jovi: “I really, truly mean it when I say, Mr. Springsteen, no disrespect . . . you are a legend. But in the Battle a da Jerz, when that thick chemical-waste smoke clears and the overly sprayed mall hair parts, the Jov man is the last man rockin’.” Whitney Pastorek on Whitney Houston vs. Mariah Carey: “Frankly, dry recitations of figures are just too easily negated by simple things like, say, bringing up someone’s horrible taste in choosing movie roles. Watch, I’ll do it right now: Yes, Mariah has seventeen number one singles, and Whitney only eleven. But Whitney made The Bodyguard, which is basically a classic, and Mariah starred in Glitter, a colossal suckfest of crapitude that should disqualify her on the spot.”

The Jesus Mysteries - Was the Original Jesus a Pagan God? 2001 | ISBN: 0609807986, 0722536771 | PDF | 360 pages | 3 MB This groundbreaking book looks at one of the greatest cover-ups in history and dares to think the unthinkable about Christianity - that it was in fact a Jewish Mystery School modelled on the ancient Pagan Mysteries. The myth of Dionysus bears startling resemblances to the the story of Jesus Christ. It compares with the biblical story in the following ways: * Dionysus is God made flesh and is hailed as the 'Saviour of Mankind' and the 'Son of God' * His father is God and and his mother is a mortal virgin who afterwards becomes worshipped as the 'Mother of God' * He is born in a cowshed * He drives out demons, turns water into wine and and raises people from the dead * He rides triumphantly into town while people wave palms to honour him The date revered by the first Christians as Jesus' birthday was originally that of Dionysus, also the three day Spring Festival of Dionysus celebrating his death and resurrection coincides with the Christian festival of Easter. The last Supper and the Eucharist are also parallel Dionysian rites. This is not common knowledge as the story was a closely guarded secret of the Pagan mysteries. Secondly the evidence of Christianity's pagan roots were systematically covered up the Roman Church.

The Sociopath Next Door 2006 | ISBN-10: 0767915828, 076791581X | PDF | 256 pages | 14 MB Who is the devil you know? Is it your lying, cheating ex-husband? Your sadistic high school gym teacher? Your boss who loves to humiliate people in meetings? The colleague who stole your idea and passed it off as her own? In the pages of The Sociopath Next Door, you will realize that your ex was not just misunderstood. He’s a sociopath. And your boss, teacher, and colleague? They may be sociopaths too. We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people—one in twenty-five—has an often undetected

mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in twenty-five everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath. They could be your colleague, your neighbor, even family. And they can do literally anything at all and feel absolutely no guilt. How do we recognize the remorseless? One of their chief characteristics is a kind of glow or charisma that makes sociopaths more charming or interesting than the other people around them. They’re more spontaneous, more intense, more complex, or even sexier than everyone else, making them tricky to identify and leaving us easily seduced. Fundamentally, sociopaths are different because they cannot love. Sociopaths learn early on to show sham emotion, but underneath they are indifferent to others’ suffering. They live to dominate and thrill to win. The fact is, we all almost certainly know at least one or more sociopaths already. Part of the urgency in reading The Sociopath Next Door is the moment when we suddenly recognize that someone we know—someone we worked for, or were involved with, or voted for—is a sociopath. But what do we do with that knowledge? To arm us against the sociopath, Dr. Stout teaches us to question authority, suspect flattery, and beware the pity play. Above all, she writes, when a sociopath is beckoning, do not join the game. It is the ruthless versus the rest of us, and The Sociopath Next Door will show you how to recognize and defeat the devil you know.

The Orion Mystery: Unlocking the Secrets of the Pyramids 1995 | ISBN: 0517884542 | EPUB, MOBI | 325 pages | 7 + 7 MB A revolutionary book that explains the most enigmatic and fascinating wonder of the ancient world: the Pyramids of Egypt. "[An] absorbing and fascinating work of archaeological detection...clearly and rivetingly told...the book is highly and compulsively readable." - London Sunday Times This fascinating archaeological detective story argues that the great pyramids of Egypt's Fourth Dynasty (c. 26002400 b.c.) were vast astronomically sophisticated temples, rather than the pharaonic tombs depicted by conventional Egyptology. In March 1993, a tiny remote-controlled robot created by Rudolf Gantenbrink, a German robotics engineer, traveled up airshafts within the Great Pyramid of Giza and relayed to scientists video pictures of a hitherto unknown sealed door within the pyramid. Bauval, a British engineer and writer who has been investigating the pyramids for more than ten years, and Gilbert, a British publishing consultant, use Gantenbrink's tantalizing discovery as a launching pad for an extended analysis of the purpose of the mysterious airshafts, which lead from the Great Pyramid's chambers to its exterior, and of the placement of other Fourth Dynasty pyramids. They were sited, the authors argue, to coincide with the key stars of Orion, a constellation that had religious significance for the Egyptians. Bauval and Gilbert claim that the shafts were pointed directly at important stars in Orion--that is, at those stars as they were placed in ancient times. Using astronomical data about stellar movement, they argue that the Orion stars coincide exactly with the pyramids' positions in approximately 10,400 b.c.--a period the Egyptians called the First Time, when they believed the god Osiris ruled the Earth. The authors also speculate that the mysterious space within the Great Pyramid discovered by Gantenbrink contains the mythical Benben stone, which the Egyptians linked to the creation of the world. The book's contentions are sometimes far-fetched and certainly unlikely to put scholarly controversy about the pyramids to rest. Still, this is an enjoyably radical rethinking of the mystery of the pyramids, with some ingenious arguments made in lucid style.

Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion 2007 | ISBN-10: 0307341445 | PDF, EPUB | 336 pages | 5 MB Thank You for Arguing is your master class in the art of persuasion, taught by professors ranging from Bart Simpson to Winston Churchill. The time-tested secrets the book discloses include Cicero’s three-step strategy for moving an audience to actionÑas well as Honest Abe’s Shameless Trick of lowering an audience’s expectations by pretending to be unpolished. But it’s also replete with contemporary techniques such as politicians’ use of “code” language to appeal to specific groups and an eye-opening assortment of popular-culture dodges, including: The Eddie Haskell Ploy Eminem’s Rules of Decorum The Belushi Paradigm Stalin’s Timing Secret The Yoda Technique Whether you’re an inveterate lover of language books or just want to win a lot more anger-free arguments on the page, at the podium, or over a beer, Thank You for Arguing is for you. Written by one of today’s most popular online language mavens, it’s warm, witty, erudite, and truly enlightening. It not only teaches you how to recognize a paralipsis and a chiasmus when you hear them, but also how to wield such handy and persuasive weapons the next time you really, really want to get your own way.

Quirky Quotations: More Than 500 Fascinating, Quotable Comments and the Stories Behind Them

1992 | ISBN-10: 051758560X | Djvu | 208 pages | 1,2 MB Most reference questions dealing with quotations are either of the who-said-what or of the what-can-I-use-in-myspeech genre. Although this volume might be used in these ways, the lack of an index makes it more of a browsing volume. The author ( The Cat's Pajamas: A Fabulous Fictionary of Familiar Phrases , Fawcett: Ballantine, 1988; Curious Customs: The Stories Behind 296 Popular American Rituals , Harmony: Crown, 1988) deliberately omits the most quoted (Shakespeare, Wilde, Shaw, Mencken, Ecclesiastes) to concentrate on the less well known or off the wall. Divided among 16 chapters on subjects as diverse as bloopers and God, each quotation is embedded in a paragraph or so of chatty background information. Some are fairly well documented; many are less so. A popular library school exercise is to have students check a quotation against various sources, which rarely agree. Thus, Tuleja attributes "manifest destiny" to John Soule while Bartlett credits John Louis O'Sullivan. Caveat emptor.

The Wordy Shipmates (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2008 | 7 hours and 15 mins | ISBN: 0743578198 | MP3 128 kbps | 412 MB New York Times bestselling author Sarah Vowell explores the Puritans and their journey to America in The Wordy Shipmates. Even today, America views itself as a Puritan nation, but Vowell investigates what that means -- and what it should mean. What was this great political enterprise all about? Who were these people who are considered the philosophical, spiritual, and moral ancestors of our nation? The people she finds are highly literate, deeply principled, and surprisingly feisty. Their story is filled with pamphlet feuds, witty courtroom dramas, and bloody vengeance. Along the way she asks: Was Massachusetts Bay Colony governor John Winthrop a communitarian, a Christ-like Christian, or conformity's tyrannical enforcer? Answer: Yes! Was Rhode Island's architect, Roger Williams, America's founding freak or the father of the First Amendment? Same difference. What was the Puritans' pet name for the Pope? The Great Whore of Babylon. Sarah Vowell's special brand of armchair history makes the bizarre and esoteric fascinatingly relevant and fun. She takes us from the modern-day reenactment of an Indian massacre to the Mohegan Sun casino, from old-timey Puritan poetry, to a Mayflower-themed waterslide. The Wordy Shipmates is rich in historical fact, humorous insight, and social commentary by one of America's most celebrated voices. Thou shalt enjoy it.

For Us, the Living: A Comedy of Customs (Audiobook) Unabridged edition 2011 | 7 hours and 34 mins | ISBN: 1441743391 | MP3 128 kbps | 426 MB

From Grand Master Robert A. Heinlein comes a long-lost first novel, written in 1939, introducing ideas and themes that would shape his career and define the genre that is synonymous with his name. July 12, 1939: Perry Nelson is driving along the palisades when another vehicle swerves into his lane, a tire blows out, and his car careens off the road and over a bluff. The last thing he sees before his head connects with the boulders below is a girl in a green bathing suit, prancing along the shore. When he wakes, the girl in green is a woman dressed in furs, and the sun-drenched shore has been replaced by snowcapped mountains. The woman, Diana, rescues Perry from the bitter cold and takes him to her home to rest and recuperate. Later they debate the cause of the accident, for Diana is unfamiliar with the concept of a tire blowout and Perry cannot comprehend snowfall in mid-July. Then Diana shares with him a vital piece of information: the date is now January 7, the year 2086. When his shock subsides, Perry begins an exhaustive study of global evolution over the past 150 years. He learns, among other things, that a United Europe was formed; the military draft was completely reconceived; banks became publicly owned and operated; and in the year 2003, two helicopters destroyed Manhattan in a galvanizing act of war. But education brings with it inescapable truths -- the economic and legal systems, the government, and even the dynamic between men and women remain alien to Perry, the customs of the new day continually testing his mental and emotional resolve. Yet it is precisely his knowledge of a bygone era that will serve Perry best, as the man from 1939 seems destined to lead his newfound peers even further into the future than they could have imagined. A classic example of the future history that Robert Heinlein popularized during his career, For Us, the Living marks both the beginning and the end of an extraordinary arc comprising the political, social, and literary crusading that is his legacy.

The Outpost ISBN: 0316185396 | 2012 | EPUB/MOBI | 688 pages | 2 MB/2 MB

At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war's deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after more than three years in that dangerous and vulnerable valley a mere 14 miles from the Pakistan border, the U.S. abandoned and bombed the camp. A Pentagon investigation later concluded that there was no reason for Outpost Keating to have been there in the first place. THE OUTPOST is a tour de force of investigative journalism. Jake Tapper exposes the origins of this tragic and confounding story, exploring the history of the camp and detailing the stories of soldiers heroic and doomed, shadowed by the recklessness of their commanders in Washington, D.C. and a war built on constantly shifting sands.

Secrets of the Cat: Its Lore, Legend, and Lives SBN: 0061978043 | 2010 | EPUB/MOBI | 240 pages | 379 KB/837 KB What is really going on behind those luminous feline eyes? Affectionate yet aloof, intelligent and inquisitive yet dangerously careless, the more-or-less domesticated house cat intrigues us as no other animal can. Now Barbara Holland offers cat lovers a fascinating, funny, and refreshingly candid look at their feline companions: their history, lore, and secrets, and their complicated relations with people and with each other. Secrets of the Cat is a lively appreciation of cats as we know and love them, with witty analysis and fresh observations about felines both high and low. Here are Winston Churchill’s ginger tom, who attended cabinet meetings; Teddy Roosevelt’s cat, Slippers, who came to dinner; and even the author’s own George II, who was bitten by a mouse and adopted by a blue jay. Barbara Holland’s warm, vivid speculations on cats’ lives and times—on their social, psychic, and mythological legacy, and their impenetrable mysteries—will give readers a delightful cat’s-eye view of the world.

injuries, praying and writing in a notebook. Under an Afghan Sky is the gripping tale of Fung's days in captivity, surviving on cookies and juice, from the 'grab' to her eventual release.
