Seconds Seconds is a tight, disturbing little book, one which proves the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it." After finishing, you'll probably conclude that your present life, no matter how humdrum or challenging it may be, is not so bad after all.
The Secret Circle: The Temptation Cassie hasn't felt this alone since she moved to New Salem and joined the Circle—the closest thing to a family she's ever known. But now that the Circle has been possessed by powerful evil spirits, Cassie is left with no choice but to turn to her dark side to rescue them. As she struggles to get through to her friends and her soul mate, Adam, she finds an unexpected ally—one who will tempt her more than ever before.
Washington and Caesar I find this book fascinating, relevant today and holding me to the end. Cameron's research brings out the character of Washington and Caesar, two military men from classes at the opposite ends of society, with credibility. And in the dialogue with the captured British Captain Stewart comes close to making Patrick Henry's concluding remark in his famous speech, "Give me liberty or give me death" seem hypocritical. Douglas R. Kinsman
Where Memories Lie "Where Memories Lie" works on many levels as an intriguing murder mystery, an exploration of an appalling chapter in European history, and a deeply affecting tale of complex personal relationships. This is a poignant and engrossing installment in a deservedly long-running and popular series.
The Wire in the Blood (Dr. Tony Hill and Carol Jordan Mysteries) Val McDermid's writing is not for the squeamish. She depicts Jacko's sadism in great detail and she doesn't shrink from killing off likeable characters. I think that McDermid went a little overboard in making Jacko Vance almost too expert in his manipulation of the public and the police. The author unfairly paints the police as naive bumblers, needing Hill and Jordan to do their sleuthing for them. I doubt that real police officers would be as vulnerable to Vance's charm.

The Voyage of Lucy P. Simmons The mysterious house, the mysterious cloud that assists Lucy whenever she is in trouble, and an ending that is just out of this world are never explained or fully developed. It's obvious that this is the beginning of a series and I for one cannot wait to find out what is going to happen next. I just wish this one would have been a bit more fully developed.
The Torment of Others If books on criminal profiling and psychological forensics are your thing, you'll probably really enjoy McDermid's work. If someone has recommended her writing to you and the Dr. Hill/Carol Jordan mysteries sound like they are too gruesome, check out the Grave Tattoo, which is a neat, little literary mystery.
The Riptide Ultra-Glide If you have never heard of Tim Dorsey you are missing a truly great author. A native Floridian, his characters resemble the Marx Bros on acid. Each adventure gets better and more bizarre and I highly recommend beginning at the first book to gain the proper perspective.
The Piano Tuner Finally, with the exotic locale as its backdrop, the plot functions as a metaphor for the journey we sometimes take outside ourselves. The search for beauty and truth is not always a straightforward and easy one there are many distractions along the way. Indeed, the signs can be confusing, and one can become lost.
The Mermaids Singing (Dr. Tony Hill and Carol Jordan Mysteries) In the final confrontation, Hill is forced to use all his training, skills and insights. He begins to realize the perp may be hunting the profiler. The way McDermid has inserted life into the usually predictable tales of death has once again made my skin crawl. Even as I write this and remember, the hair on the back of my neck stands up and I need to turn around to assure myself no one is there. Read "The Mermaids Singing". You won't be disappointed.

The Claws of Evil (Battles of Ben Kingdom) Welcome to Victorian London: the home of the Artful Dodger, Sherlock Holmes...and Ben Kingdom, cocky street urchin - and the saviour of mankind. Unknown to mere mortals, an ancient battle is being waged across the city. Below the streets lurk the Legion, an evil gang of miscreants and criminals in league with the monstrous Feathered Men determined to unleash Hell on the streets of London. Above the city's rooftops soar the Watchers, a ragtag band of orphans, mystics and spies, dedicated to protecting the vulnerable and guarding London against evil. Only Ben can put an end to this war the only problem is, he doesn't know which side to choose.
The Locket Great read! Suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would be next. Can't wait for the next book by this talented new author!!!
The Last Temptation McDermid handles her large cast of characters and a complex plot adroitly. Her dialogue is crisp and her descriptive writing is vivid yet understated. The author ratchets up the tension as the novel reaches its exciting denouement. Unfortunately, McDermid resorts to a pat ending, which strains believability. However, this quibble aside, I recommend "The Last Temptation." McDermid's skill as a writer of fast-paced and well-crafted thrillers makes this new novel a "must-read" for fans of this genre.
The Burn Palace The result is a riveting study of the dark side of human nature and the contagion of corruption inspired by avarice. Ordinary folks are terrorized by unknown attacks in the night, the town inundated by marauding packs of coyotes, a madman turnedstalking killer and a crematorium that spews the thick smoke of human remains though its chimney. Evil lurks here, to be sure. It is the nature of that evil that haunts the pages of The Burn Palace.
Sword of Caledor (Tyrion & Teclis) William King is a great writer of this world. I found his Gotrek and Felix books lots of fun. These are heading that way too. It is nice reading a book where the author is not bound by explaining the world, just telling you great stories in them.

Solar McEwan is brilliant in the utterly original language he uses to describe his characters and the often farcical situations and settings they find themselves in, but in the end, his literary legerdemain can't overcome the fact that just about everyone in the book is unlikable.
Yellow Crocus This is one of those books that's hard to put down, as the characters grab hold of you. The scenes are so vivid and linger on long past the end of the book. I realized while I was reading how rare it is that a novel deals directly with the intimate details of birth and mothering. It is an insightful look at the heartbreak, courage, silences, and love that exist amidst the cruelty of slavery and the bizarre rationalizations of those who profited from plantation life.
Miss Liz's Passion Miss Liz is a widow, who is currently teaching third grade in Florida. As will happen, she finds herself with a favorite student, in this case, one with a learning disability. Kevin Lewis is as adorable as they come, but his behavior is anything but adorable. He is fighting, biting, and being surly. His father, Todd Lewis doesn't respond to the letters and telephone calls...you guessed right, Kevin is waylaying the messages. This charming story finds teacher and parent joining forces to make the world a better place for Kevin. A lovely story.
Jenny Plague-Bringer Well this was a great ending to the paranormal s! I hate to see them go but enjoyed the ride.
Inquisition A fast-paced mystery occurring near the beginning of the Inquisiton years when torture was JUST getting started and not all the means of creating pain were perfected yet. A good accounting of the time period and creates the world of the 14th Century in pretty good detail. Several surprises along the with an ending that is believable and well constructed. Highly recommended for those that enjoy the historical period surrounding 14th and 15th century Europe.

God of War: The Story of Alexander the Great
Anyway, to cut a (very) long story short, this is an excellent and very exciting book, despite a few personal reservations, some of which are perhaps just quibbles. There are a host of reasons to buy this book and read it, so why not treat yourself to it?
India Black and the Shadows of Anarchy (A Madam of Espionage Mystery) This is historical mystery, not romance, and has lots of insight into the politics, culture and social conditions of the late Victorian era. If you're fond of romance you have to be a very patient romance reader. There's a budding relationship between India and French, but it's going really, really slowly. However, if you consider that the first book takes place in the winter of 1876 and this third one takes place in the spring of 1877, it's a very realistic time frame for romance to develop between two people from two very different walks of life.
India Black and the Rajah's Ruby (A Madam of Espionage Mystery) I love this series and really enjoyed this novella that gives us more of India's background and how she came to be the madam of Lotus House. India Black is a unique character and Carol Carr fleshes her out for us wonderfully. Before this series I was not much of a fan of historical mysteries but this author writes in a way that takes us right there in the moment.
Illegal Procedure: A Sports Agent Comes Clean on the Dirty Business of College Football
Like bed bugs on a thousand-dollar mattress, Luchs exposes the skin-crawling truth under the glamorous surface of being a sports agent in a straight forward, yet entertaining manner in Illegal Procedure.
Ghost Lights Millet's charismatic wit blends with her piercing, philosophical insights and compassion to portray a man on the brink of an existential crisis. What is especially endearing about Hal Lindley is his humanity as a parent, ripe and heartfelt with touching contradictions. The ending is surreal and mystifying, with a touch of the bizarre, a soul-searing finale that makes me impatient for book three.

Fever of the Bone Val McDermid keeps the story interesting with her use of high tech options in combination with the new social media. She seems to be way ahead of other authors in this area. The police procedurals are explicit and so well written. The story of Tony's discovery of his father is moving, and this may open the door to a more satisfying relationship with DCI Carol Jordan.
Gallows Lane: An Inspector Devlin Mystery Gallows Lane is an intelligent mystery that bumps right into the complications of modern life and modern policing. Devlin is one of the good guys, and reading his cases is a real treat. Well done, author McGilloway.
Flood Plains This was a wonderful book. Well written and very entertaining. Well worth your time. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys horror/sci-fi style novels.
Dragon Keeper (Rain Wilds Chronicles, Vol. 1) There's the haughty Sintara, reborn as a stunted wingless dragon who loathes herself and her fellows Alise, a young woman devoted to studying ancient dragon history and lore, but unhappy in her marriage to a cruel, snotty playboy and Thymara, who has had claws and scales since she was born and is marked as an outcast among the Rain Wilds folk (and loathed by her own mother).
Dreaming of the Bones The story can be read first as a straight who-done-it with sufficiently engaging plot subtleties to give casual readers enough doubt to pull them through to the end, all the while wondering and in the end being truly surprised. For the mystery afficionada, this is genuine goods and well worth the investment.

Careful of the Company You Keep Some of the storyline was a little unrealistic- like what happened with Danny and her daughter- sorry, my children come first and always will. Renee was a bit on the raw side but I enjoyed her character the most. She really went through some things in this book that actually made me tear up. I really felt for these women, looking for love in all the wrong places.
Breaking the Wrong (Sloan Brothers) This novel did not disappoint... and gave me even more than I had hoped for. The sweet love between Emilia and Macsen was so unexpected and for me even sweeter than that of Severine and Thayer from Every Which Way! Pick this gem up and enjoy the ride!
Blood of Dragons (Rain Wilds Chronicles, Book 4) If you have come to cherish these characters as much as I have, you'll really like this story. It doesn't have QUITE the "slap upside the head" of the original Farseer Trilogy (in which I think Hobb must have thought, "Let's see, how can I torture my main character some more?") but I do really really like it. I think you will too.
Borderlands (Inspector Devlin Mystery 1) This may be Brian McGilloway's first mystery, but I sincerely hope it won't be his last. Devlin is an interesting character. He's married with two small children and a dog and put into a realistic dilemma when faced with an old girlfriend. The story is very well plotted and definitely kept me interested all the way through. The story isn't set in a city, but in a rural area where the loss of livestock is a serious issue. It's a human story dealing with families and the sins of the fathers
Beneath the Bleeding
This is a great and timely story and a caution against face value in our dealings with others. A secondary story line that is nearly as powerful as the main story threads throughout this book as a tale of unexpected and undeserved revenge on the successful graduates of a local school and directly involves a member of Carol's team. McDermid does keep things ticking!

Before I Go To Sleep Hard to believe it's a debut novel, SJ Watson's Before I Go to Sleep has garnered star reviewed from Kirkus and Booklist and was in development to be adapted into a movie before the book was even released. And though I've read some excellent books this year, I haven't come across a novel that would appeal to so many readers. This book has all the makings of an absolute block buster.
And Justice There Is None "And Justice There is None" is a mystery done up to perfection, including authentic British-English (Car Park for parking lot, Inland Revenue for IRS, mobile for cell phone, and so on) despite the fact that Crombie lives in Texas. Recommended.
A Tranquil Star: Stories The standout for me was the title story, moving beyond musing to deftly make a profound observation about the relationship between our personal worlds and ... well ... other worlds.
A Tale Dark and Grimm Wow, did I enjoy reading this. Gidwitz is, first of all, a fantastic storyteller. The tale is pretty complex, and also fairly horrifying, but it moves at a rapid pace and is constantly enlivened by clever jokes, allusions, and tongue-in-cheek "warnings" about what's to come. These last will appeal to bloody-minded readers of all ages, by which I of course mean everyone.
A Magic of Twilight: Book One of the Nessantico Cycle 'Magic of Twilight' is like the love child of a political intrigue novel and a history textbook, whose nursemaid was a fantasy adventure. I mean that in the best possible way. It combines all my favorite elements from each of these sources.

A Long Finish Since Michael Dibdin is one of my favorite writers, I expected excellence and was not disappointed. Combines with dark humor, a twisted story and facinating background on Italy's wine industry. Dibdin's writing style is beautiful his descriptive narrative is the essence of every writing teachers' favorite saying: "Don't tell us - SHOW us". Two warnings: as he often does, Dibdin starts the book with a purposely opaque and confusing first chapter which is clarified as the story unfolds. Also, I found the book to be far more violent than his past works.
A Lie for a Lie During this same period, Sister Nora, a circus owner and preacher buys land in the small town, and brings her menagerie of animals and circus entertainers to the once peaceful town. Her controversial agenda is to build a biosphere to keep humanity and animals safe for the future. There's so much going on, that something has to give. Of course, a murder takes place and Aggie can't help getting involved! I liked the way the way the various people came to life and how Aggie describes their personalities. This is the fourth book in this mystery series and Richards does not disappoint.
A Good Hanging A GOOD HANGING consists of twelve police procedural investigations starring John Rebus and co-starring his hometown Edinburgh. The anthology is different from most short story collections, as there is no introduction explaining the topic or its greatness. Instead Ian Rankin uses the investigative stories to provide the audience a close up look at Rebus and some of his cohorts enabling the greatness to shine. Fans of the series will fully enjoy the collection and anyone interested in a first look at one of the best detectives around today ought to take the fall because they will conclude that this anthology and subsequently the Rebus novels are among the top police procedural series in bookstores.
2nd Chance (Women's Murder Club) Another glaring difference frequent Patterson readers will notice about 2nd Chance is that the author is much more attentive to character development in this series than he has been with the Alex Cross series. Each character has personality strengeths and flaws and Patterson illustraits them in detail. One deals with a pregnancy while Cindy becomes involved with a minister. By allowing the reader to feel personally connected with his characters, Patterson only makes the story that much more exciting. Highly recommended to anyone who liked 1st to Die or books from the Alex Cross series.
A Trusting Heart This was a fun and cute story. What woman doesn't want to be swept off her feet by a handsome man who wants to spoil and take care of her?
